The Police Department offers the Police Explorers Program for young adults, ages 14 to 19, that express an interest in becoming or being a part of law enforcement as a career. Explorers have the opportunity to experience hands-on law enforcement training, police ride-alongs, practical exercises, local and state competitions, and more. Teens must be in high school (Grades 9 - 12), have at least a 2.0 grade point average, be of good moral values, have never committed any crimes, and be interested in law enforcement. B roward County Public Schools (BCPS) welcomed students back to the classroom on Tuesday, August 16th. Students styled their favorite lunch boxes and proudly carried new binders in their backpacks as they rode on one of the county’s 1,000 school buses. The children may be less aware of a number of changes at Broward’s schools that are lessSeveralvisible.upgraded security measures have been implemented this year. These include technology upgrades and increased security personnel at each county school. Students and faculty will continue to be required to wear their student identification lanyards throughout the day. Some of the new security measures, however, won’t be quite as visible. “Many cameras throughout our schools have been upgraded. Enhancing those cameras from analog to digital and also having additional security measures as you come into the school as you’re entering the schools (were a priority),” said Jaime Alberti, BCPS’s new Chief Safety and Security Officer. “It’s not just about the technology but also about ensuring that we have the personnel that supports the schools and provides additional security at that school.”

■ MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR D ear Readers, I would like to invite everyone to attend the city’s observance of the 21st Anniversary of 9-11 or Patriot Day, when we remember and honor the thousands who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The ceremony will take place on September 11, 2022, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Park adjacent to the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way. The ceremony, which is free, will begin with the Presentation of Colors by the City of Pembroke Pines Police and Fire Department Honor Guards. It will also include guest speakers, community leaders, and patriotic music featuring local school bands and area musicians. Residents and guests are encouraged to tour the statues that are part of the Memorial Park, created to ensure this day is never forgotten.

Kids of all ages enjoyed water theme games and activities while making a splash on the last weekend before the first day of school.
