October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

WN O N PE O

2020

O

ctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While the nation is rightfully focussed on finding treatments and a vaccine for COVID19, it is still important to remember that more than 40,000 of our friends, neighbors, and family members will die of Breast Cancer in the United States this year. Cancer is one of the oldest diseases ever described in medicine. In fact, it is referenced in ancient Egyptian manuscripts that are more than 3,500 years old. For almost all of those years, treatment consisted primarily of prayer and faith rather than medicine and science. Over the past 150 years, however, incredible progress has been made. Beginning with surgical interventions pioneered by American Surgeon Willam Stewart Halsted in the mid-1890s, Breast Cancer patients began to see their prognoses improve on an almost yearly basis. With the introduction of chemotherapy, mortality rates have declined steadily over the past five decades. We still, unfortunately, have a way to go. According to Science Daily, about 270,000 U.S. women were diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2019 with about 41,000 dying from the disease. Today, Oncologists are beginning to focus on “personalized cancer medicine.” They use information about a patient’s genes, proteins, and environment to diagnose and treat that patient. Breast cancer has gone from being an incurable condition to something that is understood, treatable, and in many cases curable. The progress made over the past 150 years is truly one of mankind’s greatest achievements. The cumulative contributions of so many doctors and scientists over that time will be continued on into the future. We can envision a day where a breast cancer diagnosis is no longer something to fear. Until then, let’s all remember that we are in this together.

Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care

The Modern Funeral Family Now Four Generations Strong

W

hen making the most difficult decisions in life, decisions about death, you want to turn to a trusted family that delivers experience, compassion, and an extraordinary personal touch. That’s why South Floridians have been relying on Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care for decades. As the area’s oldest and most respected name in funeral and cremation care, this familyowned and operated business provides guidance, emotional security, and meaningful memories during life’s most painful times. Recently, Tiffany Panciera sat down with us for an interview.

Why do you call yourselves “The Modern Funeral Family”?

That’s a great question, thank you for asking! As you can see by the photo on the front cover, my husband Mark and I along with Mark’s son Mark Anthony do not portray what most would consider typical ‘undertakers’. We are all about celebrating life, and that is exactly what we bring to those we serve. While still honoring tradition, we embrace the families of today in ways that customize their ‘goodbyes’. Whether for a simple cremation service on the beach or leading a procession of Harley Davidsons to the cemetery, we memorialize each life uniquely, remembering it with others in ways that are unforgettable. That is what makes us special, and families are so appreciative for that contemporary, compassionate, customized care.

And you are now in your 4th generation of the family-owned and operated business?

Yes, and we are elated about that with Mark Anthony joining the firm. After Mark Anthony graduated from college,

he oversaw marketing for a large national firm in our industry gaining incredible experience. And now he is bringing that to our firm, digitally transforming our business, adding meaningful value to our offerings, satisfying the emerging needs of 2020 and beyond. For example, we can now live-stream our services around the globe. Additionally, we have the ability to make fully on-line, virtual arrangements adding ease to the process for the survivors at an extremely difficult time.

4 generations seems like a very long-standing funeral tradition in your family. Tell me more about that please.

The original Panciera Memorial Home was founded in Rhode Island by Mark’s grandfather in 1932 and then migrated to Hollywood in 1962 where Mark worked with his father before expanding the business with the Boyds. Don and Kathy Boyd began their business in the late ‘50’s in Hollywood as well and then grew it with their sons Larry and Patrick in Pembroke Pines. We are so proud of that tradition and now we have the fabulous fortune to usher in the 4th generation of caregivers with Mark Anthony. It seems so extraordinary to say, especially in South Florida, that our family funeral service tradition is nearly 90 years strong, servicing thousands over the years! But our philosophy remains true and foundational . . . We make a difference one family at a time.

What can families expect when they visit Boyd-Panciera?

Families comment all the time that they have never experienced a funeral home like ours. Compassion, dedication, trust, service excellence, affordability, simplicity; I can go on-and-on based on what I’ve been told. From traditional burial to simple cremation, to our signature services that include hospitality and catering offerings in our Legacy Café . . . all coming with a 100% satisfaction guarantee. And we have never turned anyone away due to lack of funds. All that combined, and much more is the BoydPanciera difference.

The workshop is held on the third Tuesday of every month, providing proven resources that help individuals move beyond the pain.

How can families reach Boyd-Panciera Family Funeral Care?

They can contact us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 954-989-9900. We are located at 6400 Pines Boulevard and 1600 N. University Drive, Pembroke Pines. And we are extremely proud to announce that our Pines Boulevard chapel will be undergoing a complete renovation, beautification project in the fall - just another sign of our investment in the community and in those we serve. For more information, we can be found at www.BoydPanciera.com. In the past, present and in the future, you can rely on us for advice you can trust, fair pricing, and compassionate care that is unequaled. We feel privileged to be carrying on our family legacy in this wonderful community. Allow us to help you make the most difficult decisions in life at death. Please stop by and say hello to our “Modern Funeral Family” – ha! We look forward to seeing you.

Do you also offer Pre-Planning?

Yes, we do. We encourage our families to preplan. It is one of the greatest gifts to leave your family; the gift of peace-of-mind, security, certainty knowing all of the painful details are taken care of so your loved ones don’t have to make them at a heart-breaking time.

I’ve heard about your Continuing Care program.

We are very proud of our community outreach program called “Wings of Hope”. This is a free, continuing care program that we offer to the community at-large and to our families, inviting anyone to join us on a journey of healing after any type of loss.

Contact us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 954989-9900. We are located at 6400 Pines Boulevard and 1600 N. University Drive, Pembroke Pines. Online: www.BoydPanciera.com. OURCITYMEDIA.COM | OUR CITY | OCTOBER 2020 17

COMMUNITY NEWS

Pembroke Pines Veteran Surprised with A Brand-New Air Conditioning Unit

T

he Miami Dolphins and Air Pros USA came together to help a Pembroke Pines Veteran. Rudolph “Rudy” Watt, a retired Army veteran with a total and permanent disability, was nominated to receive a brand-new air conditioning unit, free of charge. The Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ program worked through nominations from community partners such as the Wounded Warrior Project to select Rudy. On Wednesday, September 2, Air Pros USA installed a new air conditioning unit at Rudy’s residence and assisted with all permit requirements. “We are in the business of providing cool and healthy indoor home environments and we understand better than anyone else how important it is to feel comfortable in your own home,” said Anthony Perera, founder of Air Pros USA. “By teaming up with Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™, everyone at Air Pros USA feels proud to be able to help a veteran in need and show our gratitude for his service in the military and our community.” “We are proud to have a partnership with Air Pros USA that extends beyond the field and supports the mission of our FOOTBALL UNITES™ program of utilizing our platform to bring positive change to the South Florida community,” said RaShauna

Hamilton, Miami Dolphins Senior Director of Community Relations & Youth Programs. “Through our great community partner, the Wounded Warrior Project, we were able to identify a deserving individual and provide him with an air-conditioning unit that will hopefully make Rudy’s life at home a little easier.” After retiring from the Army with over two decades of service, Rudy returned to South Florida where he spends most of his time in community service volunteering with organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project, The Mission Continues, Act-2, and Veterans Ocean Adventures. Last year, Rudy’s home caught on fire and he lost everything. He recently closed on a home in Pembroke Pines, but the AC unit was faulty and needed to be replaced. “We’ve known Rudy for many years and salute him for his service to our country and his commitment to serve and help those around him. Rudy lost everything in the house fire, including his physical memories of his time in the military and his diving gear which he uses to help disabled veterans enjoy the healing powers of water. He is a fantastic human being and it was only fair for us to nominate him and be able to help him out,” said Edwin Vasco, Outreach Specialist at the Wounded Warrior Project.

“I cannot thank enough the good Samaritans at the Wounded Warrior Project, the Miami Dolphins and Air Pros USA. I am truly blessed to have all these good people around me,” said Rudy. About Wounded Warrior Project Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) is a nonprofit organization whose

mission is to honor and empower Wounded Warriors. WWP seeks to assist those men and women of our armed forces who have been severely injured during the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other locations around the world. For more information, visit http://woundedwarriorproject.org.

Giving Away the Gold, Miramar High School Teacher Presents at the 2020 Emmys BY JON DUKA iramar High School history teacher Cindy Pouca-Marcelin never expected to be famous. She, like her colleagues, has dedicated her life to helping education our children. But, when the folks from Hollywood came calling, she couldn’t say no. That’s Hollywood, California, not Hollywood Florida! Like virtually everything this year, the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards were unlike any before it. The nominees and presenters of television’s “greatest” awards were all remote. This allowed heroes from other walks of life to participate in addition to TV stars. Cindy, who represented more than 4 million educators nationwide, participated in the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards to announce the nominees and winner for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy. “I’m teaching history, I’m living through history. When the pandemic started, I thought I’d see my kids in a week or two. Then those weeks turned into months,” commented Marcelinhas, “I can’t wait to come back to work, just to see their faces.” She then went on to introduce the nominees,

Jackboy, Partners with the Miami Dolphin’s Albert Wilson Foundation to Provide More Than 2,500 Meals to Broward County Students and Families

T

he Albert Wilson Foundation (AWF), founded by Miami Dolphins wide receiver Albert Wilson to enrich the lives of children in foster care and raise awareness about social justice and racial inequality issues impacting those in the foster care system (he, too, came up through the foster care system), recently partnered with Sniper Gang and EMPIRE music artist, Jackboy, to donate more than 2,500 meals to Broward County, FL, students and families. The partnership also included funding to help AWF launch its youth mentorship program, which is currently slated to begin in early 2021. In total, Jackboy donated $10,000 to benefit youth, families and local businesses in Broward County. On September 1, Jackboy purchased 80 lunches and 2,500 meal vouchers from Dutch Pot Jamaican Restaurant. The 80 lunches were then delivered to students who attend Eagle Nest Middle School by Albert Wilson and Jackboy. Since students are not currently attending school in-person, parents were advised that meals would be available to pick up in a socially distanced, drive through setting on the school’s grounds. The remaining 2,500 meal vouchers will benefit Broward County families and children in foster and relative/nonrelative care associated with the child dependency system. Since hitting the music scene in 2017, the 23-year old rap artist and native South Floridian, Jackboy, has amassed more than 85 million views on YouTube and more than 160 million streams across all streaming music platforms. Jackboy holds his South Floridian community close to his heart and pledged $10,000 to supporting local businesses and families in need who may have been impacted by Covid-19.

About The Albert Wilson Foundation The Albert Wilson Foundation is a charity founded by Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson to enrich the lives of children in foster care. It strives to change the destiny of foster children and break the cycle of abuse, neglect and abandonment. With an average of 40-60% of foster youth identifying as Black or Hispanic, the Foundation also serves as a voice and an agent of change dedicated to raising awareness for social justice and racial inequalities. The Foundation not only works to support youth during their transition in and out of foster care, but also provides a platform for transitioning youth to learn about legal rights, laws and social issues impacting people of color. Its goal is to provide scholarships to those wishing to continue their education outside the state of Florida, in addition to rewarding youth who continue to excel in the classroom and extracurriculars, despite all obstacles and circumstances. For more information visit http:// www.albertwilsonfoundation.org. About Jackboy: Born in Haiti and raised in Pompano Beach, Florida, Sniper Gang artist Jackboy beams with a captivating personality and charisma. He emphasizes the importance of words, both in conversation and melodic rapping as seen throughout his career and latest album Living In History, which came out August 28, 2020. The 14 track offering reflects the unprecedented and challenging times this country is facing due to the pandemic and social injustices. LEGALLY SPEAKING

What Does It Mean To Establish Paternity? BY EVAN H. BARON, ESQ. ost adults share a common misconception about the legal concept of paternity. A majority of individuals inaccurately believe that if a father is named on a birth certificate, that he is the legal father of the minor child; however, that is not true. Before delving any further into this topic, the following must be made clear: the need to establish paternity only exists in situations where a child is born to a couple or individuals that are not legally married. (Note: If a couple is legally married and a child is born of that marriage—both the Mother and Father are considered the legal parents of said child(ren)). When two individuals have a child together but are not married, the law only recognizes the mother as the legal parent. That is because there is never a doubt as to who the Mother is, for obvious reasons. The Father on the other hand, does not enjoy that same status, until it is legally determined/ established by a Court that he is in fact, the legal father of the minor child. The fact that a Father is named within the birth certificate only serves as a ‘presumption’ that he is the Father, but it still does not amount to a legal establishment of Paternity. The same is true of a DNA test—having a positive DNA match serves as proof that a Father is the biological father but still does not result in the Father’s legal establishment of Paternity. What is important and absolutely necessary for a father in this situation, is for his legal status as Father to be established in Court. So, what does it mean to establish Paternity? It means that the Father is seeking the same status and rights that any legal parent has in the state of Florida. This includes, for example: the right to make and be involved in any and all decisions relating to the child’s education, health, and overall upbringing. Additionally, it means having the right to exercise timesharing with the minor child. This includes having the right to spend time and live with the child during a certain percentage of each year—specifically during the school year, summer break as well as during holiday breaks and specific holidays. Lastly, and often times most importantly, it means being able to prevent the other parent from making any unilateral decisions about the child. Sometimes unilateral decisions by one parent are minor and inconsequential. However, other times, certain actions taken by the other parent are related to major issues that can have a substantial impact. One example of this is the Mother relocating to another state with the minor child without notifying or discussing the matter with the Father. In that situation, only a legal father can prevent such an action from the Mother. A biological father who is listed on the birth certificate or who has a DNA test proving he is the father would be in no position to prevent a relocation from taking place. For that and all the other reasons mentioned above, it is important for the legal establishment of paternity to occur—in most cases, sooner rather than later. For more information on the topic of Paternity, check out our websites ‘Establishing Paternity: Most Commonly Asked Questions’ at: https://divorcebroward.com/establishing-paternity-faqs-infographic/

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF: MIRAMAR

Beyond the Call of Duty

POLICE CHIEF DEXTER WILLIAMS

I

t’s a moving story of a friendship that grew out of a horrific crash: Ten years ago Moise Brutus lost three limbs, but gained much more than he could imagine. After a get together with friends one October night in 2010, Moise hopped on his motorcycle and headed home. He remembers riding on Florida’s Turnpike and then waking up on the ground, severely injured. His motorcycle was nowhere in sight. Moise managed to call 911, but could not tell dispatchers his exact location. He felt he was going to lose consciousness and time was running out. “We had the helicopter on the way to search for him. We had every single officer in the city looking for him,” recalled Capt. Cesar Andina. “He was laying on a sliver of concrete that drains from the turnpike. When I saw him, I knew that his legs were gone and his right arm was gone. I knew we had to start applying tourniquets.” The first officer who located Moise, Det. Carlos Villalona, a war veteran, described Moise’s injuries as similar to what he saw while serving in Iraq. His chances of survival were less than one percent. “It’s one of those things that

stays with you forever,” Capt. Andina says with tears in his eyes. “He lost so much blood…. We were going to be one of the last people that he spoke to. I wanted to see him again.” Moise was a fighter though, and this was a battle he was not ready to lose. With every day that passed he became stronger. Although dark days followed, Moise never gave up. The officers who responded that night would stop by to visit, pitched in and bought him an iPod, and later a dog. Capt. Andina began inviting Moise to dinners and movies with his family as well. “He has been a part of every major milestone in my life,” Moise said. “He

helped me set up my first saltwater fish tank, my first car, when I got Dexter (my dog), my graduation…. We met under not so good circumstances, but a lot of good has come from that.” Capt. Andina echoes the sentiment, “He’s like a son to me.” “It’s almost surreal now, 10 years later being here. I don’t know if I would be here today without his support,” said Moise. Today Moise is a father to two young boys and is an inspiration to many, showing them you can overcome no matter what challenges or hardships are presented. Both Moise and Capt. Andina say the bond that was formed that night of the crash is one that will last a lifetime.

Should the State Attorney Be Fair and Independent?

W

hat kind of question is that? Of course the State Attorney should be fair and independent. The State Attorney (District Attorney in many States) is truly the Chief Law Enforcement Officer in Broward County. The State Attorney’s Office is responsible for reviewing all police arrests and deciding if formal charges are warranted from misdemeanors to homicides. The State Attorney is responsible for creating an Office that properly serves the citizens of Broward County by prioritizing the rights of victims, partnering with law enforcement and prosecuting defendants while safeguarding the due process rights of all citizens. These responsibilities are sacred and should not be driven by political considerations. They can only be accomplished through a fair application of facts to laws. No one, especially a politician, should be allowed to interfere in this process. Therefore, when electing a State Attorney voters should look at the qualifications and independence of each candidate. The candidates are asking you to hire them as your personal

attorney. Do the candidates have the proper credentials necessary to even be considered for the job they seek? What life experience do they have? What legal experience do they have? Are they stable and trustworthy? Do they have experience doing the job they seek? Have they handled complex cases like homicides? Voters should get answers to these questions and ask themselves “would I hire this candidate to protect my interests?” In my 20 years as an Assistant State Attorney, from 1994-2014, I learned firsthand how important the State Attorney’s Office is to the safety of our community. The five years I worked in the Career Criminal Unit taught me that a small number of criminals commit a large percentage of crimes. A well run office will focus assets in this area. My four years as a Supervisor taught me that people need to be recognized for their efforts and held accountable when they fall short. My 7 ½ years in

Homicide showed how devastating these crimes are, not just to victims, but to their families. I learned that no two people grieve the same. Most importantly, in 20 years as an Assistant State Attorney no victim, next of kin or witness ever asked me what political party I belonged to. It was simply irrelevant. They only wanted to know if I was able to handle their case intelligently, with passion and free from outside interference – in other words – independently. So look at the candidates to see if they have the experience to fairly handle the job, if they are truly qualified and independent from political influence. Ask yourself if you would hire them to work for you.

SCHOOL NEWS

Broward Schools To Reopen BY JOHN DUKA

I

n a tiny step toward normalcy, you might see some kids wearing backpacks this month. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) announced a plan to reopen school campuses to onsite learning during October via a webcast featuring Superintendent Robert Runcie. “The COVID-19 positivity rate in Broward County is trending downward,” said BCPS Superintendent, Runcie, “this positive news was mirrored last friday by Governor Ron Desantis when he chose to move Broward County to Phase 2.” Broward County Schools closed school campuses

based on four “gating criteria”: • Disease Progression • Ability to Manage Spread • Health System Capacity • District Safeguard Adequacy Students and teachers will be given the option to return to face-to-face learning via a staggered approach. Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, gth and 9th grades will start on October 14th. All other students will start classes on October 20th. E-Learning Families will continue to have the option of keeping their children in online education. However, a number of precautions are being put in place to make schools as safe as possible for returning students and faculty. The precautions include: • Daily Cleaning & Disinfections of facilities • Physical distancing signage will be placed throughout buildings and campuses • All students, faculty and visitors will be required to wear masks, physically distance and maintain hand hygiene The plan will allow kids to remain in eLearning or transition to face-to-face learning. In addition, families have the option of the student receiving eLearn-

ing instruction either from home or by being physically present in the school. This is a continuation of Phase 1 BCPS eLearning with the following changes: • Teachers provide eLearning from the school classroom. • Students have the option to receive eLearning: Phase 2 from home OR from the classroom. “The same criteria we used to close, is what we will use to reopen,” remarked Runcie, “We can’t let perfect stand in the way of good. There is no way to guarantee we’ll have a 100% COVD-free environment.”

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Use in the Foot and Ankle BY A. MESSINA BYDR. DR.CARLO JOHN GOODNER

H

ealing after an injury involves a wellorchestrated and complex series of events where proteins in the blood act as messengers to regulate the entire process. Many proteins involved in the healing process are derived from small cell fragments in the blood called platelets. Platelets are small, colorless, cell fragments present in the blood. They are formed in the bone marrow and are freely passing through the bloodstream in a resting state. However, when an injury occurs, the platelets become activated and start to gather at the injury site to release beneficial proteins called growth factors. This is the beginning of the healing process. For many years, blood components derived from the patient and then delivered to the site of injury have created growing interest for use in orthopedic procedures. New research and technology have expanded the application of this therapy for use in orthopedic procedures. What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)? Platelet Rich Plasma is a concentration of platelets and growth factors created from a small amount of your own blood. Increased levels of growth factors have the potential to improve signaling and recruitment of cells. What conditions can it treat? PRP can be used to treat Arthritis (foot or ankle), Ligament Injuries (acute or chronic), Tendon Injuries (acute or chronic), Joint Pain, Chronic Inflammatory Conditions, Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis,

Chronic Nerve Irritation (Neuritis), Shin Splints and Heel Spurs. How does the PRP process work? Our doctors will recover a small amount of blood from your arm using a small needle and a specially designed syringe. The blood then goes through a rapid spinning process that separates and concentrates the platelets and other beneficial growth factors from the blood. The entire PRP production process is usually done in less than 20 minutes. What happens after that? The injected area will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic (Lidocaine). The blood with its PRP will be injected into the area directly or with the aid of ultrasound or x-ray. Am I a candidate for treatment with PRP? Speak with our doctors and ask if PRP is right for you. We will perform an examination to determine if the use of PRP will benefit you. If you are on anti-inflammatory medications or blood thinners, your physician may temporarily discontinue the use of these until your treatment has taken place. What are the risks associated with this treatment? PRP uses your body’s own natural properties to treat your injury. Side effects utilizing PRP systems are very uncommon. With an emphasis on nutrition, exercise, Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a recognized expert in cosmetic plastic and leading a healthy lifestyle to look and feel better, there comes a time when despite diet and exercise unwanted localized fat deposits don’t go away. For many patients, removal of these pockets of subcutaneous fat through liposuction is the best option. However, there are cases when a person is not a candidate for surgical fat removal. The reason for not undergoing surgery may be multifactorial. There may be a medical contraindication or another personal reason why an individual would rather have a noninvasive approach to improving their body contour. Today there are several nonsurgical fat removal options. The majority of which have only shown minimal or no benefit in controlled experimental studies with the exception of Cryolipolysis. The removal of fat by application of localized “freezing” technique is how CoolSculpting works. By no means is this technique equal in efficacy or outcome to liposuction, but it can be an effective method to reduce localized fat deposits for certain individuals. Based upon evidence of safe and effective body contouring clinical studies in humans, Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) received FDA clearance for fat reduction in the flanks in 2010, then for the abdomen in 2012. Recent studies have shown benefit in treatment of the lateral thighs, arms, inner thighs, bra fat area, and double chin with evidence of skin tightening in the neck region. Eighty-six percent of the patients treated noticed a visible fat reduction and with 90% satisfaction with the treatment. There are several vacuum cup applicators available now including the standard contoured cup, CoolCore, and the flat cup, CoolFit, applicator. The applicator is placed over the region of localized fat excess; the fat is treated with a vacuum assisted device which delivers cold to the subcutaneous fat destroying the fat cells which are metabolized by the body and eliminated naturally. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness or discomfort in the treated areas, but this is temporary and will resolve completely. Often times, patients return to work immediately after their CoolSculpting session is

Canine Therapy Dogs Help Distribute Backpacks to Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center Patients & Siblings

F

or the families of Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC), Back to School became a community effort this year. The Center traditionally distributes school supplies in August to help prepare children with special needs and their siblings for a new school year. With the COVID-19 pandemic still limiting community gatherings, this year’s event looked tremendously different while still providing the same excitement and smiles. CDTC staff and volunteers hosted a series of outdoor “brigades” in the Center’s parking garage the week before school began. Nearly 600 children received a new backpack and supplies as they drove through the pick-up line. Volunteers and their dogs from Canine Assisted Therapies joined the brigades, visiting vehicles to the delight of children and adults. The Center’s families also received an additional boost this year. Each family received groceries and snack packs from Helping Hands Food Drives, a gift card to assist with hurricane supplies and a Wellness Kit from Broward Health. “We knew our annual Back to School distribution would be challenging this year with so many questions about the start of school and the need for social distancing,” shares CDTC Executive Director Ana Calderon Randazzo, Ph.D. “But we couldn’t let our

families down when so many are in need.” CDTC’s Primary Care Center and Care Coordinators will continue distributing another 100 backpacks to families who couldn’t make it to the Brigades to pickup items. In all, the Center hopes to deliver around 600 backpacks this year. “We are incredibly grateful to the community for providing funds and supplies this year, including the Community Foundation of Broward, The SMART Ride, 626 and Wright Maritime,” shares Dr. Calderon Randazzo.

n Children’s Diagnostic & Treatment Center (CDTC) is a not-for-profit that serves more than 12,000 clients with special healthcare needs in Broward County annually. As a facility of Broward Health, CDTC’s mission is to promote the optimal health and well-being of children with special healthcare needs by providing comprehensive prevention, intervention, and treatment services. I’m a 7 month old male Australian Shepherd from Pembroke Pines. My favorite toy is a tennis ball and I like to play soccer with it. Whenever I hear ”let’s go for a walk” I jump for joy and cannot contain my excitement, it’s my favorite thing to do. My auntie and my dad are my favorite people, whenever they come home I wag my tail so hard that my whole booty shakes! I also love to give hugs and I understand spanish. Pools and cars are really not my thing, but I’ll put up with a car ride only if it’s to go to the park!
