This Independence Day We Remember Our Heroes

As Independence Day approaches, we want to give a “shout out” to the 2.2 million men and women serving in the United States military. While we don’t see them often, it is reassuring to know that these brave people are across the globe serving their country.

It is a little-known fact that our Navy, Army, and Marine Corps are older than the country itself. The Continental Congress formed all three service branches after hostilities began against England in 1775. In fact, the very first military unit of the United States was essentially a bunch of farmers.

The “shot heard round the world” at the Battle of Lexington and Concord occurred 15 months before the Second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The battle was fought by local militia members known as Minutemen. They were mostly farmers, tradesmen, and ordinary citizens who took up arms to defend their rights and resist British forces. They were also the beginning of what would become the most powerful force in human history.

The minutemen were quite the rag-tag group. Each man (they were all men then) brought his own musket, clothing, and gear. They elected their Captain, John Parker, who famously said, “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.”

The minutemen have few similarities to today’s high-tech and highly disciplined armed forces. Today’s forces, however, do hold the same values of selflessness, honor, loyalty, duty, patriotism, and courage that those few hundred men from Massachusetts held 247 years ago.

With the war in Ukraine, violence in the Balkans, and increasing tensions with China, today’s service members are asked to deal with complex situations in distant lands. About 173,000 people are serving abroad, and about 50,000 Marines and Sailors are at sea. When you grab a cold one this July 4th, raise your glass to the minutemen and today’s Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, Coast Guardsman, and Guardians.

Happy Independence Day!

As parents we always want the best for our children. Ask any parent what they want in a preschool for their children, you will always hear three things: safety, learning, and emotional development. The Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool has taken those priorities to heart. The teachers and staff at Tree of Life are committed to providing students with the highest level of care and education.

The ten-time Best of Weston winner and 2022 Best of Davie winner offers a unique, high-level learning curriculum with programs for infants through pre-kindergarten. They offer an innovative dual-core curriculum that includes immersive bilingual teaching. In fact, more Tree of Life students graduate reading at the first-grade level than any other Weston preschool. We visited Tree of Life to learn what makes them unique.

Expanding Higher Education

Dual-Core Curriculum

Tree of Life Christian Academy believes a successful education is centered on the curriculum used to teach kids. One of the curriculums has been used internationally for over 50 years. Scholastically, reading is half the battle for preschoolers. Their school’s curriculum has a six-step program to teach reading skills by using a phonetic approach.

At the same time they use a second Preschool Curriculum which is the component of a researched-based system of education. The curriculum has a set of teaching practices, content areas, assessment tools, and a training model to help teachers use the curriculum to support children’s development. The curriculum is based on Active Learning. Active Learning is direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events,

and ideas. Children are encouraged to “construct” their own knowledge by pursuing their personal interests and goals, guided by trained adults who understand the importance of learning areas for children in the preschool years.

Child Safety

Tree of Life Christian Academy is dedicated to the safety of every child who attends the school. This includes physical safety, maintaining a sanitary school environment, and ensuring that students’ emotional needs are met. The school employs a full-time armed security guard, has bullet proof entry doors, and offers an on-site clinic for their students. All Teachers are trained and certified in CPR and first-aid. The school even exceeds the CDC COVID-19 safety protocols; Take a tour today to learn about all of the amazing things they offer, making this a very special and

safe preschool. In the times we are living in, this Preschool offers every important feature, which is rarely seen.

Engaging Classrooms & Facilities

The school’s warm and inviting classrooms are filled with age-appropriate materials to help stimulate creativity in each child. Learning centers include blocks, dramatic play, housekeeping, manipulatives, art, library, science, sand & water station, music and movement, as well as writing. The school is equipped with the latest technology, classrooms have Apple iPads, as well as an impressive 1,200 square-foot indoor play area and four outdoor playgrounds, and organic and natural lunches are served.

Committed Teachers & Staff

Tree of Life’s highly degreed and certified teachers motivate, encourage, and create a thirst for learning by building on each child’s individual strengths, gifts, and talents. As a Christian faith-based school, Tree of Life teaches moral and family values. Every student feels loved and valued every day they walk into this school.

Parents are invited to tour Tree of Life’s facilities, meet with the school's staff, and speak with parents of existing students. After you do, you’ll know why they have been voted Best Preschool of Weston by the readers of Our City. Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool truly gives children a higher level of care & education. Due to their overwhelming success Tree of Life Preschool has expanded, opening their second location, which will is located in Cooper City.

▸ Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool is located at 1250 SW 160th Ave in Weston (954) 440-0174 and 4035 Embassy Drive N. in Cooper City (954) 842-2238. To learn more about enrolling your child or to schedule a school visit, call or go to www.treeoflifeacademy.com.

How Broward College Helped Jean Saintgeorges Achieve the Education of his Dreams

When Broward College student Jean Saintgeorges was awarded the 2023 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship, he received hundreds of messages of congratulations. Friends, faculty, and family were proud of his achievement: a scholarship worth up to $55,000 per year for use toward tuition, living expenses, books, and required fees to complete his bachelor’s degree. But while many were impressed, few were surprised.

After all, to everyone who knew him, Jean was already the kind of high-achieving

individual who had the ability to impact lives and change the world around him. At Broward College, he arrived with a desire to make a difference — in his own life and in the lives of others. Broward College simply showed him the way.

Where do we go from here?

Jean is passionate about math, business, and accounting. He hopes to take his academic excellence and community service passions to a university where he can earn a bachelor’s degree in

Accounting and a master’s in Business Administration. He aspires to be a certified public accountant and work in the private sector before owning his own accounting firm.

No matter which university he decides to attend, he is confident he will be able to navigate life’s uncertainties

and overcome any obstacle that stands in his way. Broward College helped him prove he’s capable of anything.

Cypress Bay Sends Three Students to U.S. Military Academies

Recent Cypress Bay grads Alyssa Wagner, Victor Saade, and Alejandro Schmidt Corujo will soon be marching on-line, learning their general orders and, before they know it, leading the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. Each of them recently accepted appointments to one of the U.S. Services Academies and will soon begin the path to becoming a commissioned officer in our military.

Becoming enrolled at a service academy in the United States is a highly competitive and rigorous process. The service academies, including the United States Military Academy (USMA), the United States Naval Academy (USNA), the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), and the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), offer exceptional education and training for individuals aspiring to serve in the military.

In addition to extraordinarily high academic admissions standards, candidates must meet specific medical, physical, and fitness standards and obtain a nomination from a U.S. Congressman, Senator, The U. S. Vice

President, or a service academy Commandant. All three of Cypress Bay’s future officers were nominated by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

All three of the students have already displayed considerable leadership skills. Alyssa will be enrolled at the Air Force Academy, where she plans to become a pilot. She was the JROTC Battalion Commander at Cypress Bay last year. Victor, who was a mainstay

Essential Tips for a Bite-Free Summer

It's that time of the year again—mosquito season is upon us. With the arrival of summer rains, it's important to take proactive steps to protect yourself and your home from these pesky insects. One effective measure is to eliminate potential mosquito breeding grounds by removing standing water in and around your property. Mosquitoes have a relatively short life cycle of around seven days, and they can breed even in small amounts of water found in containers like bottles, cans, cups, buckets, hoses, planters, drains, and in certain plants such as bromeliads.

Make it a habit to regularly empty any water-holding objects. If there are larger items that cannot be emptied, consider applying larvicide to prevent mosquito larvae from developing. It's worth noting that certain mosquito species, including those that carry diseases like Zika Virus and Yellow Fever, can breed both indoors and outdoors and bite at any time of the day or night.

On evenings when mosquitoes are particularly active, protect yourself by wearing shoes, socks, long pants, and long sleeves when outdoors. Additionally,

apply an insect repellent containing DEET or other approved ingredients to your skin and clothing.

Draining standing water remains the most effective method for preventing mosquito reproduction. Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County, advises practicing the "drain and cover" approach. By eliminating standing water, you eliminate the breeding grounds for mosquito larvae, effectively stopping their multiplication and reducing the likelihood of being bitten.

It's important to note that mosquito eggs laid in shallow water can hatch within a day or two. The larvae develop rapidly, transforming into pupae that quickly mature into fully grown mosquitoes. The entire life cycle, from egg to adult mosquito, takes about eight to ten days, with pupae emerging as flying mosquitoes within two to three days.

Mosquito Service Requests

Broward County Mosquito Control will consider spraying your neighborhood if you have a large number of mosquitoes. Call 954-765-4062 or scan the QR code to submit a request.

Weston & Sunrise Celebrate Completion of Weston Road Mobility Improvements Project

On a beautiful Saturday morning, the cities of Weston and Sunrise came together to commemorate the successful completion of the Weston Road Mobility Improvements Project. This transformative project, designed and constructed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), has brought new bike lanes to the area, enhancing connectivity and promoting a healthier and more sustainable mode of transportation. With a total investment of $2.6 million, the project signifies a significant step forward in local mobility enhancement efforts.

Enhancing Connectivity and Sustainability

The Weston Road Mobility Improvements Project has focused on providing seamless connectivity for cyclists, linking existing pathways and creating a safer environment for biking enthusiasts. The newly constructed bike lanes stretch from Griffin Road to State Road 84 and Markham Park, allowing for convenient and uninterrupted travel throughout the area. This enhancement will encourage more residents and visitors to embrace cycling as a viable mode of transportation, reducing traffic congestion and promoting a greener, more sustainable community.

FDOT and Broward MPO Collaboration

The successful realization of the Weston Road Mobility Improvements Project is the result of a collaborative effort between the FDOT and the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). At the behest of the cities of Weston and Sunrise, the Broward MPO facilitated the allocation of funds for the project, recognizing the importance of investing in local mobility initiatives. Through this partnership, the FDOT meticulously designed and constructed the bike lanes, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards and fulfill the needs of the community.

Widened Road and Enhanced Safety Measures

To accommodate the new bike lanes, Weston Road underwent a widening process. The road now features a five-foot-wide lane on the west side and a more spacious five to eight-foot-wide lane on the east side. This design allows for comfortable and safe cycling for riders of all skill levels. Additionally, the project incorporates various safety measures such as clear signage, designated crossing points, and improved visibility, all aimed at ensuring the well-being of both cyclists and motorists.

Community Benefits and Future Prospects

The completion of the Weston Road Mobility Improvements Project has brought numerous benefits to the communities of Weston and Sunrise. The new bike lanes not only enhance transportation options but also promote a healthier lifestyle by encouraging physical activity and reducing carbon emissions. Residents now have a safer and more convenient way to explore their surroundings, visit local businesses, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

This project sets a positive precedent for future mobility-enhancement initiatives in the region. The success of the Weston Road improvements demonstrates the commitment of local authorities to prioritize sustainable transportation solutions and cater to the evolving needs of their communities. It serves as an inspiration for other cities to invest in similar projects, fostering a network of interconnected bike lanes and promoting a culture of active and eco-friendly transportation.

Service to our Community & Beyond Rotary Club of Weston

We are excited to introduce our new Rotary Club of Weston President, Cristiano Nicolucci. A little about our new President; He was born in Ascoli Piceno, Italy, he attended military school after high school and sang in the chorus of his hometown opera house. A special note about Cristiano, he escorted people with disabilities (blind and paralyzed people) to scuba dive. He married his wife in 2006 and has two boys both attending Cypress Bay High School. Cristiano started with Rotary in his hometown in 2013 and continued with ‘Service Above Self’ when he relocated to Weston in 2016. We are lucky to have him!

As we celebrate our new leader, we will also gather with friends and family to make this Fourth of July an unforgettable experience. The festivities will kick off with a vibrant parade at The Weston Town Center, showcasing beautifully decorated floats, and special guests. Witness the patriotic spirit of Weston as we come together to honor our nation's freedom. We hope as many residents of Weston can join in the festivities.

After the parade, we continue the celebration by all Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Weston gathering to indulge in a feast of mouthwatering flavors, including juicy burgers, savory hot dogs, and delectable sides. It's a perfect way to celebrate Independence Day; we will enjoy the company of our vibrant community while creating wonderful memories and supporting our charitable initiatives.

▸ Together, we can make a positive impact! If you would like to learn more about the Rotary Club of Weston, please go to our website for more information. www.westonrotary.com.

PREPARE FOR UNFORESEEN LIFE-ALTERING VACATION EVENTS

July is here along with heat and humidity. It is the perfect time to take a vacation. It is also the perfect time to make sure you have a plan in place for any unfortunate or life-altering events that can happen while you are away.

Last summer, Jane and Jorge traveled on a cruise visiting exotic and exciting locales. Jorge overexerted himself and developed a cough. Because he was traveling without the appropriate medications for his cough, it developed into a severe infection. Jorge ended up being evacuated to the nearest port. He found himself hospitalized in a foreign country, with only Jane to look after him, and they both had significant language barriers to effective communication.

Although they had purchased travel insurance, they only had the minimum amount of coverage. The flights, evacuations, and resulting hospitalizations were not fully covered and ended up being extremely expensive. Adding to that, Jane decided to shop while Jorge was hospitalized, spent a bit too much and forgot to declare the items when returning to the United States. Jane also forgot to note the conversations she had with various officials and doctors. It was a vacation disaster.

This is what Jane and Jorge should have done and how everyone should prepare for unforeseen circumstances that could crop up at any time.

1. Health Emergencies or Accidents: To prepare for the unexpected, ensure you have appropriate travel insurance including medical coverage. Additionally, make sure you have health care directives in place. For example, a Health Care Surrogacy will enable a loved one to make a medical decision for you if you are unable to communicate. It may also be helpful to bring along items for illness or pain relief as well as a list of your prescription medication.

2. Organize Important Documents: Update your estate plans! Gather your essential documents such as wills, trusts, insurance policies, and powers of attorney. Inform a trusted family member about their location and provide them with necessary contact information.

3. Asset Protection: Overspending or encountering financial problems during your trip can be stressful. Inform your bank about your travel plans to avoid any issues with your credit or debit cards. Falling victim to theft or losing important travel documents like passports or identification can be a true nightmare. Make digital copies of your documents and store them securely online. Carry physical copies in a separate bag or wallet and consider using a money belt or hidden pouch to keep them safe while traveling.

4. Language Barriers and Communication Issues: Being unable to communicate can lead to confusion or difficulties while traveling. Learn a few basic phrases in the local language, carry a translation app or phrasebook, and research common gestures or customs to navigate interactions smoothly.

Remember, it's important to be prepared and take precautions. Speak with an Estate Planning attorney to make sure you have the appropriate protections in place! Don't let fear deter you from enjoying your travels. Stay informed, be adaptable, and embrace the adventure while keeping your safety and well-being a priority.

Run For A Cause At The Kettle Krush 5K

Saturday, July 22, at Markham Park

The Salvation Army of Broward County on Saturday, July 22, as we come together to combat poverty and homelessness in South Florida. The sixth annual Kettle Krush 5K, held at Markham Park in Sunrise, promises to be a holiday-themed event that welcomes participants of all ages and encourages teams to take part. We are delighted to announce that WPLG Local 10's Roy Ramos will be returning as our special guest host. Don't miss out on this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of families in need by registering now.

Over the past five years, our event has seen over 500 participants raise awareness and funds to tackle homelessness and hunger in South Florida. The funds we raise provide vital resources to impoverished families, enabling them to break the cycle of poverty and achieve financial stability. With over 50,000 residents of Broward County relying on our services each year, it is the community's support, including individuals, groups, and businesses, that fuels our mission, accounting for more than 70% of our funding.

The Kettle Krush 5K derives its name from our iconic Red Kettles, which are manned during the holiday season to collect donations for families in need. Each year, The Salvation Army raises hundreds of thousands of dollars and distributes over 7,000 gifts to families living below the poverty line in Broward County.

The racecourse at Markham Park is officially sanctioned by the USATF, and AccuChipUSA, Inc. will provide professional timing for the race. We encourage participants to embrace the holiday spirit by dressing up in festive attire and bringing their pets decked out in their finest. Awards will be presented to the top three runners, various age groups, and those with the most creatively wacky holiday outfits for both themselves and their pets. Our event caters to all ages and will feature a kids' zone with art, crafts, and a bounce house.

To secure your spot, take advantage of our early registration fees: $10 for children up to 9 years old, $25 for students aged 10 to 17 and seniors aged 60 and above, and $30 for registrants aged 18 and over.

Team registration is available at $25 per person for teams of five or more. As a token of our appreciation, each registrant will receive a complimentary commemorative race t-shirt. Additionally, participants in the Kettle Krush 5K will enjoy waived entry fees for Markham Park, and parking will be provided free of charge, conveniently located across from the Runner's Pavilion area.

EMPOWERING YOUTH: TRACY GREENBAUM'S PASSION FOR HELPING STUDENTS REALIZE THEIR POTENTIAL

Ilike helping people. The whole point of us being here in this world is to help each other.”

This is the philosophy of Tracy M. Greenbaum, Broward County guidance counselor and college admissions coach whose passion in life is helping youth fulfill their full potential.

And in a time when poor mental health has become an epidemic, and colleges are becoming increasingly competitive, it is becoming more and more crucial for students to be supported inside and outside of school. Mr. Greenbaum aims to be a part of this supportive network.

“We’re here for the students. That’s my number one thing,” he said.

Even though his goal was always to help people, he didn’t always expect to become a guidance counselor. Before pursuing a career in education, he was on the pre-med track at the University of South Florida. However, he had a feeling it wasn’t the right path for him.

Mr. Greenbaum spent years immersed in the world of tennis and sports as a professional tennis coach for 25 years and even a tennis coach for a sleepaway camp from as young as 16 years old.

Additionally, he served as an assistant coach on the 2018 Western High School girls' softball team. What was that like?

“We had an amazing run,” Mr. Greenbaum said.

With his guidance, and with a lot of hard

work and dedication, the team was able to win the state championship, the first state title for Western High School.

“It [the win] was even more intense and more meaningful because my daughter played for me,” he said.

His experience helping students to improve in athletics, through both softball and tennis, helped him rediscover his passion.

“I’ve always enjoyed teaching and working with young people. And so after years of teaching tennis, I decided I found my calling, which is helping students,” said Mr. Greenbaum.

Mr. Greenbaum then pursued a degree in education, getting hired immediately after earning his master’s degree in guidance and counseling. Throughout his career, he’s always made sure to encourage students.

One of his former students, Jason Howard, agrees with this notion.

“Mr. Greenbaum was my counselor for two years,” started Howard, explaining that despite being assigned another counselor, he continued seeing Mr. Greenbaum, “all of the students liked him. When I would go to the guidance office, all of the doors were closed,” said Howard. “His door was always open.”

Through Greenbaum College Advising, many others also benefited from Mr. Greenbaum’s help.

“I find that my passion is helping these kids one on one with the whole entire college process. I think it's really fun helping them

write their essays, helping them choose their colleges.” said Mr. Greenbaum, “My favorite thing is at the very end when they actually make it. It's a great feeling on their end and my end as well, knowing that I did make a difference in someone's life.”

“That’s why we do what we do,” he said.

PROTECTING YOUR EYES FROM THE SUN

ummertime means more time spent outdoors, in the pool, at the beach, or even just BBQing! All that outdoor activity means more exposure to direct sunlight. Studies show that exposure to bright sunlight may increase the risk of developing ocular diseases like cataracts, retinopathy, and growths on the eye, including cancer. UV light is certainly responsible for development of corneal and lens conditions regardless of the UV exposure being natural or synthetic. This means the same risk applies when using tanning beds, so be sure to protect your eyes from indoor UV light as well. Also, remember that sunlight reflected off sand and water can cause conditions like photokeratitis, which is responsible for snow blindness so beach- and pool-goers take note.

SIt is unfortunate that many people are unaware of the dangers UV light can pose. By wearing UV blocking sunglasses, you can enjoy the summer safely while lowering your risk for potentially blinding eye diseases and tumors. It is important to start wearing proper eye protection at an early age to protect your eyes from years of ultraviolet exposure. Sunglasses are available for all ages, from birth through life.

According to a national Sun Safety Survey, only about half of people who wear sunglasses say they check the UV rating before buying. The good news is that you can easily protect yourself. In order to be eye smart in the sun, you should use the following recommendations:

▸ Wear only sunglasses that block both UV-A and UV-B rays and that are labeled either UV400 or 100% UV protection.

▸ Wear polarized lenses. While any lenses that have 100% UV protection will give you protection, polarized lenses will protect your eyes while also giving you the best vision quality.

▸ Choose wraparound styles so that the sun’s rays cannot enter from the side.

▸ If you wear UV-blocking contact lenses, you still need sunglasses.

▸ Wear a hat along with your sunglasses; broad-brimmed hats are best.

▸ Remember the kids. It’s best to keep children out of direct sunlight during the middle of the day. Make sure they wear sunglasses and hats whenever they are in the sun.

▸ Know that clouds don’t block UV light. The sun’s rays can pass through haze and clouds. Sun damage to the eyes can occur any time of year, not just in summer.

▸ Be extra careful in UV-intense conditions. Sunlight is strongest mid-day to early afternoon and when reflected off of water.

By embracing these simple tips, you and your family can enjoy the summer sun safely while protecting your vision.

Home Renovations in South Florida THAT MAXIMIZE YOUR SELLING PRICE

hen it comes to selling your home in South Florida, strategic renovations can significantly enhance its value and attract potential buyers. With the region's unique architectural styles, climate considerations, and buyer preferences, knowing which renovations to prioritize is crucial. Let's explore a few home renovations that can help maximize your selling price in South Florida.

Kitchen Remodeling:

The kitchen is often considered the heart of a home, and a well-designed and updated kitchen can make a significant impact on potential buyers. In South Florida, where outdoor living and entertaining are popular, consider an open-concept design that seamlessly integrates the kitchen with the dining and living areas. Updating countertops, cabinets, and appliances with sleek and modern options can enhance both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the space, making it more attractive to buyers.

WOutdoor Living Spaces:

South Florida's pleasant climate makes outdoor living spaces highly desirable for homeowners. Invest in creating inviting outdoor areas such as a patio, deck, or screened-in porch that seamlessly blend with the indoor living spaces. Consider adding features like an outdoor kitchen, a pool, or a landscaped garden to enhance the appeal. These additions not only create a relaxing oasis but also add value to your home and increase its overall marketability.

Energy-Efficient Upgrades:

With South Florida's hot and humid climate, energy efficiency is a key consideration for homeowners. Upgrading your home with these features can be an attractive selling point. Install energy-efficient windows and doors to improve insulation and reduce cooling costs. Consider replacing old appliances with energy-star-rated models, which not only save energy but also appeal to environmentally conscious buyers. Adding solar panels to the roof can also significantly increase your home's value, as it demonstrates a commitment to

sustainability and offers potential savings on electricity bills.

Bathroom Updates:

Bathrooms are another crucial area of focus for home renovations that can maximize your selling price. Consider updating fixtures, faucets, and lighting to give the space a fresh and modern feel. Opt for neutral colors and timeless designs that appeal to a wide range of buyers. Upgrading the bathroom's functionality, such as adding dual sinks, a spa-like shower, or a luxurious bathtub, can also increase its appeal and overall value.

When it comes to selling your home in South Florida, strategic renovations can be a game-changer. Best strategy: Keep the focus on the kitchen, outdoor living spaces, energy-efficient upgrades, and bathroom updates that can make your home more appealing to potential buyers. Remember to choose renovations that align with the region's climate, architectural style, and buyer preferences to maximize your selling price and attract a broader pool of interested buyers.

Is It Time to Replace Your Roo F ? MAYBE NOT

One of the defining characteristics of South Florida neighborhoods is the sea of terracotta roofs that cover so many homes. The Spanish-style roofs are a popular choice for builders and homeowners alike because of their beauty, long life, and relatively low maintenance requirements. They are also, unfortunately, a source of anxiety. This anxiety is driven by the state of Florida’s home insurance market.

The expected useful life of a tile roof is about 30 years. After that period of time, the effects of the hot sun and years of storms tend to degrade the grout holding the tiles together, causing cracked tiles and leaks. Replacing a roof can cost as much as 10% of the value of a home.

Florida Home Owners Insurance

South Florida is particularly susceptible to hurricane damage. It is also an area that has had particularly high roof-related insurance claims over the past decade. Many people within the insurance industry blame many of these claims on fraud or unnecessary replacements.

Since early 2022, many insurance companies and the re-insurance companies

who back their policies have announced they are either scaling back their business or discontinuing coverage in Florida entirely. An increasing number of Florida insurers have also fallen into insolvency.

The result has been a sharp escalation in insurance policy rates for many Florida homeowners and uncertainty over the future solvency of more of the state’s providers. There is also a new focus on the age and condition of a roof, with most insurance companies requiring at least five years of roof life.

“Anything over 20 years tile is becoming an issue,” said M&L Insurance owner David Vaandering, “with some carriers, as long as they can prove the roof has five years life expectancy, you should be ok, but again it depends on the insurer.”

Home Value Impact

Homeowners planning on selling in the next few years should think carefully about if and when to replace a roof.

“A new roof definitely adds value to a home,” said Keyes Real Estate Agent Mariem Garcia, “Buyers are more inclined to make an offer on a newer roof.”

She added that if an existing roof still has life, home sellers may be better off investing their money elsewhere, “As long as it (the roof) has at least four to five years left of life, and if it’s insurable, then you’re good. If the roof has reached its life limit, then you may have to replace it unless you find a cash buyer who doesn’t mind the old roof.”

To Replace or Not

Deciding to replace a roof proactively is a decision every homeowner must consider at some point. Perhaps the most important, sometimes overlooked criterion to consider is your roof’s condition. Roofs that are structurally sound, not leaking, and fully intact are likely good to go, regardless of age. Most reputable roofing companies offer roof inspections to evaluate your roof. If your home has a roof that is more than 20 years old, it is advisable to contact your insurance agent to ensure you don’t have any upcoming issues.

In short, if your roof has five years of life expectancy and is insurable, there are likely other places to invest your money than buying a new roof.

Building a Greener Future

ECO-FRIENDLY HOME IMPROVEMENTS

In today's world, where environmental concerns are paramount, making ecofriendly choices is crucial. One area where we can make a significant impact is in our homes. By incorporating sustainable home improvements, we not only reduce our carbon footprint but also create a healthier living space for ourselves and future generations. In this article, we will explore some inspiring ideas for transforming your home into an eco-friendly haven.

Energy-Efficient Appliances

One of the easiest ways to reduce energy consumption is by upgrading to energy-efficient appliances. Look for products with an ENERGY STAR label, which indicates that they meet strict energy efficiency standards. Efficient refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers can save both electricity and water, reducing utility bills and environmental impact.

Solar Panels

Harnessing the sun's power is an excellent long-term investment for sustainable living. Solar panels can generate clean, renewable energy for your home, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Depending on your location, you may even be eligible for government incentives or tax credits to help offset installation costs. With technological advancements, solar panels have become

more affordable and efficient, making them an attractive option for homeowners.

Green Insulation

Enhancing your home's insulation is not only a cost-effective measure but also an eco-friendly one. Proper insulation reduces heat transfer, keeping your home cooler. Consider using natural and sustainable materials like cellulose insulation, made from recycled paper, or sheep's wool insulation, which is both renewable and biodegradable. These alternatives provide excellent thermal performance while minimizing environmental impact.

Water-Saving Fixtures

Conserving water is essential for sustainable living. Upgrading to water-saving fixtures such as low-flow toilets, aerated faucets, and showerheads can significantly reduce water usage without sacrificing comfort or functionality. These fixtures use innovative designs to maintain water pressure while consuming less water, making them an eco-friendly choice for every home.

Sustainable Landscaping

Extend your eco-conscious efforts beyond the four walls of your home by embracing sustainable landscaping practices. Plant native species that require less water and maintenance, reducing the need for

chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Implement rainwater harvesting techniques to collect and utilize rainwater for irrigation purposes. Additionally, consider creating a composting system to recycle kitchen scraps and yard waste, enriching the soil naturally.

Smart Home Technology

Integrating smart home technology can enhance both convenience and sustainability. Install programmable thermostats that adjust temperature settings based on occupancy, reducing energy waste. Smart lighting systems can automatically turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, further conserving electricity. These innovations allow homeowners to monitor and control their energy usage, optimizing efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

Incorporating eco-friendly home improvements not only benefits the environment but also enhances your quality of life. By implementing energy-efficient appliances, solar panels, green insulation, water-saving fixtures, sustainable landscaping, and smart home technology, you can create a truly eco-friendly haven. These sustainable choices will not only reduce your carbon footprint but also save money on utility bills in the long run. Let's take responsibility for our homes and contribute to building a greener future for generations to come.

Earth Tones & Texture are the BIGGEST TRENDS IN HOME DECOR

Updating your home is one of the best ways to improve your quality of life. With so many choices, it is helpful to learn what the latest trends are before pursuing a home improvement project. We sat down with Valentina Valderrama, Architect and designer at Weston Floors and Remodeling to learn more.

What is important when making home decor design decisions?

Home decor doesn’t undergo change as fast as other things because it’s very expensive to switch home design from season to season. Therefore, the pieces that make up the harmony in interior design need to be timeless and well-preserved. So, the key is always to find interior solutions to renovating and elevating spaces that will last years and still be relevant.

Great point! What is popular right now?

Earth tones have been dictating color schemes, textures, and lighting in the past years and are still popular today. Earth-tone materials possess calming effects that are associated with nature, which are often preferred for aesthetic purposes in homes, pushing away anything that involves the color gray, shiny fixtures, and overly graphic printing of materials.

Brutalist style is something that is still very popular this year and will be in the year to come; the use of concrete-like materials and the choice of raw textures, materials, and colors are present in all aspects of design. This style won’t disappear soon since it incorporates natural elements such as wood, stone, and plants that go into a more calm

aesthetic than other styles. It sounds like people love tex ture in their home decor.

Yes! Textured materials are another big trend this year. From varied flooring materials like porcelain, ceramic, wood, and floating floors to textured cabinetry and accent fixtures, the texturizing of home elements brings depth and dimension to any space. Gold and bronze accents have been replaced. Homeowners are now opting for more matte silver and black fixtures that contrast better against earthy tones and texturization of materials.

THE ZEN HOME PROJECT

Now that it’s Summer, when the AC is cranked up and your home is a refuge from the heat, here are some simple tips to create a home that feels more like a sacred space. We’re talking clutter free and breathable.

Mindful Minimalism: Opt for a clutter-free environment and organize your space. Savor Simplicity. Give yourself permission to let go of what no longer serves you. In Marie Kondo's book “Spark Joy,” she states, “The best way to choose what to keep and what to throw away is to take each item in one's hand and ask: ‘Does this spark joy?’”

Create a Zen Corner. Designate a specific area for retreat. It’s not about square footage, it can be a small space. Think cushions and a small table that can serve as an altar. This can be your meditation space. Websites such as samadhicushions.com and gaim.com are great resources.

Nature: Introduce natural materials like wood, stone, or bamboo in your furniture and flooring, Place potted plants or fresh flowers around. (Personally, I’m an orchid girl).

Lightweight Fabrics: Swap out heavy curtains or drapes and consider light-filtering blinds to soften the incoming light and create an ethereal ambiance.

Add Water Elements: Consider placing a small tabletop fountain or a bowl of water with floating candles or flower petals. Water is a fundamental of Feng Shui to attract wealth and abundance. Aromatherapy: Diffuse essential oils with scents like lavender, and citrus or peppermint. Discover your favorites at Whole Foods. I love Palo Santo’s aroma when I set an intention.

Music: Turn on sounds of ocean waves, music that soothes. Bija Mantras are so lovely. Just tell Alexa… she’ll handle it.

Treasures: Think photographs, inspirational items and crystals to elevate your space. Rose and clear quartz are great. Selenite, black tourmaline and amethyst have great properties as well. Coffee table books: Companions for the mind to help you get started on a mindful practice: “Real Happiness: The Power of Meditation” by Sharon Salzberg and "The Miracle of Mindfulness" by Thich Nhat Hanh.

Arthroscopy of the Foot & Ankle

Foot and ankle injuries are very common in sports or in general activities of daily living. Many structures including bone, ligament, cartilage and joint lining may be injured. Injuries may occur from a single traumatic event or from overuse. Injuries may occur during the teenage years that may manifest themselves later on.

These injuries may cause stiffness and pain in the foot or the ankle joints, especially after getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walk. This stiffness and pain will be present for a proportional period of time usually to the degree of joint injury. With weight-bearing, the joint usually loosens and the person is able to ambulate. This stiffness and pain will redevelop if the person sits for a period of time and tries to get up and walk. As the day goes on, the foot or ankle may ache, especially with excessive activity. Swelling may be present over the area that is injured. Instability may develop if the ligaments have been injured causing the foot or ankle to constantly twist.

When these injuries are unresponsive to conservative treatment which may include orthotics, medication or rehabilitation, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary to remove the damaged tissue in the foot and ankle.

A miniature camera is placed into the injured joint allowing an image to be seen on a television screen. The joint is visualized and small instruments are introduced into the joint to clean out and repair the damage. Fragments of bone and cartilage are often removed. Suctioning of debris and smoothing rough surfaces will often allow a joint to resume its normal gliding motion.

CONDITIONS TREATED: ADVANTAGES:

1. Chronic joint pain and swelling

- Faster recovery

2. Arthritis and bone spurs

- Less pain and swelling

3. Loose bone and cartilage fragments

- Avoids large incisions

4. Stiff, scarred joints

- Low risk of infection

5. Ankle fractures that have not completely

- Outpatient procedures recovered

6. Quicker return to activities

Joints are designed to give our bodies freedom of movement. Wear and tear of a joint due to injury or due to aging may alter the lifestyle of an individual. When conservative treatments fail, arthroscopic surgery should be considered. The surgery is especially helpful for a fracture that has occurred to the ankle even after the ankle has been fixed surgically. The cartilage in the ankle joint may have been damaged during the injury causing chronic stiffness and pain that may be mild but never goes away completely. Patients often think that this is a very livable condition. However, once treated arthroscopically a full return to activity may be possible.

HOW DO I FIND

THE RIGHT PRESCHOOL?

hat a challenging and scary question for so many new families to ask. If you google the question, you will find a list of things to look for from:

1. Ask for referrals.

2. Pay attention to that first impression.

3. Learn about accreditation programs.

4. Consider the preschool teachers' qualifications.

5. Ask about the curriculum.

6. Visit the outdoor space.

7. Look for signs of community.

8. Read the fine print.

9. And so on and so forth.

There are so many things that’s you can prepare to ask and expect from a preschool, but the answer is quite simply.

Sure there are needs based on culture, lifestyle, financial status of the family and perhaps religious believes. But at the end

Wof the day when you sit with your spouse or significant other to make the decision, and once you have decided what your family budget will be for preschool, the answer is quite simple.

After every tour where i go through and answer of the parents concerns, I always remind the parents that although prices are important , sanitation, curriculum, and spaces, location & safety are too, the best way to know which is the right school for your child, is to listen to your inner voice, your intuition or how i call it, YOUR GUT!

Your gut will never fail you, you instinctively as a parent is the most valuable of all considerations.

Your guys knows best, it will give you a sense of peace of family or community when you walk through the school with your child.

The perfect preschool is unique to each families needs. What might be a perfect fit for your friends, might not be a fit for you for many reasons. So relax, take the tour and go with your gut!

merican schools and teachers have undergone significant changes to accommodate the diverse educational needs of students. The United States Census Bureau (USCB) has reported a historic increase in the number of immigrants, making the United States home to the largest immigrant population in the world.

These immigrants have entered the country through various means such as citizenship, legal permanent residency, or seeking humanitarian protection. Between 2019 and 2023, many student and employment-based visas were issued by U.S. embassies. This international population has contributed to the economic and cultural strength of the United States. Welcoming and supporting international students in schools and colleges has been crucial in maintaining this diversity. The United States remains a top destination for individuals and students seeking professional, economic, and sociocultural advancement.

Certain states, including California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, and Florida, attract a significant number of international and immigrant students. The

Apresence of these students in American classrooms has had a profound impact, enhancing the intellectual and cultural environment for native students. As a result, teaching and learning settings have had to adapt, fostering a more competitive and diverse understanding of knowledge among all students. This exposure has led American students to develop higher levels of self-confidence, leadership skills, and intellectual growth. They have acquired the ability to contextualize current issues historically, read and speak foreign languages, evaluate political and religious beliefs, and challenge preconceptions about different ethnic groups.

Teachers have expressed mixed feelings about including international and immigrant students in their subject-area classes. While they recognize the enrichment brought by multicultural diversity, they also emphasize the importance of English proficiency for mainstream classes. Teachers often create lesson plans and employ specific strategies to adapt content for non-native English speakers, but proficiency in English remains critical for academic success. Nevertheless, teachers unanimously acknowledge the positive impact of multicultural diversity on tolerance among students and teachers. American students show a growing interest in

learning about the cultures of their international peers, fostering cooperation and interaction in the classroom. Teachers understand the need to be certified to teach English as a second language to effectively address the needs of the diverse student population.

The involvement of teachers and administrators in adopting best teaching practices will continue to grow. The interactions and lessons learned from having a diverse student population in American classrooms have lasting effects on personal, socioeconomic, and professional growth for individuals worldwide.

LEARN HOW BSO IS WORKING FOR YOU

s part of our ongoing commitment to transparency and accountability, the Broward Sheriff's Office has published the 2021-22 Annual Report detailing how we protect and serve the community. In its pages, you will find the facts, from the crime-fighting statistics specific to your city to the bold agency-wide initiatives benefiting residents and visitors in Broward County.

As you will see, our organization continues to strive for excellence in all we do. I want to highlight some of the many accomplishments in this comprehensive report.

Our Aviation Unit is flying high. The team flew nearly 3,000 missions, assisting in 1,000 arrests, recovering 236 vehicles and locating 17 missing or endangered persons. Their outstanding efforts resulted in well-deserved recognition, as the unit was selected as BSO's 2021 Unit of the Year. They also won the 2022 Leadership in Police Aviation Award from the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

AOn the ground, our school resource officers (SROs) continued refining the skills required to protect our children. As our schools' front-line defense, these deputies completed rigorous active killer preparedness training alongside command personnel to effectively manage a critical incident. BSO will continue integrating real-life scenarios into our training regimen to ensure we are always ready and prepared for any situation.

Our dedication to fighting crime through education, mentorship and community service continued to pay off. Our Neighborhood Support Team, comprised of sworn and civilian staff, led cultural diversity discussions, provided vital assistance to our seniors and veterans and taught residents about their rights when interacting with our first responders, amongst other essential public safety initiatives. In December 2021, the Florida Crime Prevention Association recognized the team as the Outstanding Crime Prevention Unit of the Year.

Other notable endeavors include our Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport district participating in a FEMA

full-scale exercise to further enhance our readiness; our Department of Fire Rescue and Emergency Services Training Unit being honored as our 2021 Unit of the Year for planning, coordinating and conducting training for our more than 850 fire rescue employees; and the BSO Department of Detention hiring additional mental health specialists to support the mental well-being of our inmate population.

These are just a few examples, but there is so much more to learn from this report. Take the time to dive into all the details to better understand how your tax dollars are being spent to protect and serve Broward County. Every action we take is made with you, the resident, in mind. BSO is as much your sheriff's office as ours, and this report was created so you can see exactly how we work for you. Visit www.sheriff.org/ SheriffTony/Pages/Home.aspx to read the full report and learn more about the many innovative programs at BSO.

Minimize Risks for heat-related illnesses

Sun and heat are two common elements south Floridians enjoy year-round. During the summer season, extra considerations and precautions should be taken to ensure people of all ages stay safe while working or enjoying the outdoors. According to the National Safety Council, weather-related deaths have increased 35% since 2017, with extreme heat standing out as the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States. Following simple safety guidelines while swimming, boating, riding bikes, or enjoying summer fun can help keep families safe.

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke are especially important to help prevent heat-related illnesses. Heat exhaustion results when the body loses excessive amounts of water and salt, usually due to profuse sweating. People most at risk for heat-related illnesses are infants and young children (especially if left alone in hot vehicles), people ages 65+, people with chronic illnesses or health conditions, and people who are overweight. Common signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include excessive sweating, pale and moist skin, muscle cramps or weakness, dizziness or fainting, rapid heart rate, and nausea or vomiting. Heat stroke can occur when a person’s internal body temperature exceeds 103 degrees. Common signs of heat stroke may include headache, rapid breathing, flushed, dry or hot skin, no sweating, dizziness, and loss of consciousness. If you suspect someone is suffering from heat stroke, call 911 immediately. Make efforts to move the person to a cool place and cool the skin with cold water as much as possible. Monitor the persons breathing and be prepared to give CPR if the person stops breathing. For more information about CPR classes offered in the City of Weston, please visit https://www.westonfl.org/ government/fire-rescue-and-emergency-medical-services/ community-programs.

Having fun outdoors is one of the many benefits of summer. To minimize risks for heat-related illnesses, follow some general safety tips to help your family enjoy fun in the sun safely. Avoid going outside and participating in rigorous exercise or activity during the hottest times of the day. Take time to rest and cool down as needed. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or sports drinks. Wear lightweight clothing and apply sunscreen as often as necessary. To learn more about summer safety tips, please visit the National Safety Council website at www.nsc.org.

In South Florida, we are fortunate to enjoy year-round sunshine. As temperatures increase during the summer months, this sunshine comes with the high price of high heat. Therefore, it is imperative to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Great Putting Tips to Build Confidence and Lower Your Score!

ood putting requires complete conviction. Here’s a simple drill to inspire confidence for holing more putts. It’s also a good lesson for beginners to get a feel for the ball going in the hole. Start by holing a one-foot putt. Then increase the distance by one foot until you miss: go to two feet, three feet and so on.

See how far back you can go until you miss. When you do miss, start over at the one-foot distance. Try it on breaking putts as well as uphill and downhill putts. If you get out to eight feet without missing, pat yourself on the back.

If you’re struggling to get past two or three feet, try to clear your mind of too many thoughts, and just concentrate on making a firm, decisive stroke—accelerating the putter head through the ball. The more shots you make, the more confident you’ll be when you leave the practice green. Make

Center Contact and Keep Your Head Down

Short putts are all too easy to miss, at any level of the game. But two simple things can help you make more of them.

First, try to hit the middle of the ball in the middle of the putter face. To make center contact, align the side-stamp of the ball with the aim

Gmark on your putter. Almost all putters today are designed with the sweet spot behind that alignment aid.

Next, when you stroke the putt, keep your head down for a count of at least one second after the ball is gone. You might want to think to yourself one-thousand one before looking up, especially on a must-make putt.

You would be surprised how often these two fundamentals are neglected. But sticking to them will make you a better putter.

Get Low and Keep Your Eyes Level on Long Putts

Have you ever had the feeling you’re going to make a long putt—and then made it? Sometimes you’re unsure of how a putt will break, but you still have to pick a line and stroke the ball on that line with assurance. Check a putt from behind the hole, from the side, and finally from behind the ball. I try to get as low as I can and keep my eyes level.

The No. 1 reason for missing putts is poor alignment of the putter face. I would always want to visualize not only seeing the line but build confidence in my mind of seeing the ball rolling into the hole. That’s why visualizing the ball tracking on your line will improve your chances of making a putt.

I highly recommend spending more time on the practice green prior to going out on the course to build your confidence and not have to warm up on the golf course after putting on the first few holes and thus scoring higher than you should have if you practiced prior to teeing off.

EXERCISING YOUR DOG

Benefits

Exercise can have many health benefits for your dog. Regular exercise burns calories, reduces appetite, improves muscle tone, increases metabolism, and improves temperature regulation. It can be a valuable contributor to weight loss and maintenance. Exercise can also help stimulate your dog’s mind, thereby preventing boredom and destructive behaviors.

Needs and Precautions

Individual exercise needs vary based on breed or breed mix, sex, age, and level of health. If your dog is a 6- to 18-month adolescent or a sporting, herding, hound, or terrier breed or mixed breed, your dog’s exercise requirements are high. However, strenuous exercise can cause problems in some dogs, especially those that are not fit or are very young or old. Athletic owners should consider this to avoid overexerting their dogs, especially in hot or humid weather. When starting a new exercise routine, go slowly for the first week to give your dog a chance to adapt to it. On hot or cold days, go easy

or rest. Consult your veterinarian before beginning an exercise program for your dog.

Get Moving

Various kinds of exercise can help satisfy your dog's instinctive urges to dig, herd, chew, retrieve, and chase. Here are some good exercise options for most dogs:

▸ Walking or jogging

▸ Fetch

▸ Playing with other pets

▸ Running off-leash

▸ Swimming (great for arthritic dogs)

▸ Tricks for low-calorie treats (see the box for ideas)

▸ Tug of war if appropriate for your breed

You can help your dog get plenty of exercise by scheduling regular playtimes and walks. For walks, work up to a brisk, 10- to 20-minute walk or jog once or twice a day. If you don’t have time to walk your dog, hire a dog walker. Consider adopting another pet so that your dog has a playmate that encourages activity. If you don’t want to commit to a new pet, try scheduling regular visits with the pet of a

friend or relative. Doggy day care centers can also help ensure that your dog gets plenty of exercise throughout the day.

Low-Calorie Dog Treats

▸ Apple slices

▸ Banana slices

▸ Carrot slices

▸ Commercial dog treats (low-calorie or formulated for a smaller dog)

▸ Green beans

▸ Lean meat (cooked)

▸ Popcorn (without butter or oil)

▸ Unflavored rice cake pieces

If your dog has food allergies, consult your veterinarian about which treats are safe and appropriate.

Do not feed your dog (or cat) grapes or raisins because they have reportedly caused kidney problems in pets.

APPROPRIATIONS FOR DISTRICT103 ON THE GOVERNOR’S DESK

his session, we passed the largest budget in Florida’s history - $117 billion. I am proud that four of my sponsored appropriation projects were included in the budget and are awaiting the Governor’s approvals.

Southwest Ranches will receive $340,200 to construct a stormwater conveyance system. Stormwater runoff floods the SW 185th Way and SW 57th Court right-of-way. This leads to a large area of standing water through which many vehicles cannot safely drive. This will improve the level of service of the roadway.

The South Broward Drainage District (SBDD) will receive $262,500. The funds requested here will be used for the SBDD to rehabilitate three, large drainage culverts - so large that you

Tcan drive a truck through them. These culverts are critical infrastructure to convey all of the stormwater runoff for a 4160-acre drainage basin affecting thousands of homes and businesses in the cities of Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and parts of Davie and Southwest Ranches. If they failed, the results would be catastrophic.

The Dellenbach Foundation will receive $50,000. They provide critical financial aid, essential supplies, and volunteer services to Veterans, First Responders, and sick and injured children. These individuals are struggling with homelessness, substance abuse, and a range of mental and physical challenges. This money will be used directly for services to those in need.

The Weston Music Society will receive $12,000. The Weston Music Society will hold assemblies featuring professional musicians to promote appreciation of the field of music.

Sub-grants will be provided to the music programs of Weston secondary schools to cover costs not funded in full by funds provided by the local school districts for band programs, uniforms, instruments, travel, and other music program and music student expenses. This will help families who are facing financial hardships and are unable to secure the funds necessary to participate fully in a band program.

GREETINGS FROM YOUR Chamber President!

Weston is quickly becoming one of the fastest-growing areas in South Florida for business. The area has a thriving community with a range of industries, including technology, healthcare, and finance. This economic diversity provides opportunities for collaboration, networking, and business partnerships. The Chamber is proud to be one of those partners, with the City of Weston officially joining our Chairman’s Circle membership.

Weston is becoming known for being business-friendly, with a supportive local government and regulatory environment. The City of Weston has a streamlined permitting process and offers a number of incentives and resources to attract and retain businesses. It is actively dedicated to promoting economic development and celebrating new businesses at our Ribbon Cutting ceremonies. The City of Weston has also invested in developing a robust infrastructure, including modern office spaces, commercial centers, and advanced telecommunication networks to support operational growth for our business residents.

Overall, Weston has created a strong sense of community with both the government and residents supporting local businesses. Our role as your Chamber is to advocate for the interests of our Weston businesses and provide resources and support for their growth and success.

Now and in the future, the Chamber is dedicated to being a Convener of Leaders, a Catalyst for positive change, and a Champion for a strong business community in Weston. For more information and our event calendar, visit www. westonflchamber.com.
