“When Mom said she wanted to move to The Palace, I said she’d been binge-watching The Crown too much.”
“We have a lot of fun together, but I worry about her alone in that house. She says I come by too often and pester her too much about meds and diet. So to preserve her independence, she told me she was moving to the new Palace in Weston. I was skeptical when she took me there. I was dazzled 10 minutes later. It is gorgeous, they haven’t skimped on anything, and the people are fabulous. I knew she would be in good hands. So that will be a relief for both of us. And I’m always invited for Happy Hour and all of their legendary parties. Worried if The Palace is right for your mother? Come take the tour and you’ll never worry again.”

It's Time for School Again
I
t is hard to believe that the summer is already ending. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 16th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads, and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well. Neighborhood schools, charter schools, home school and virtual school are options now in addition to traditional private and public schools. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the area’s best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in addition to almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it. Sincerely,

International Dance Academy
Simply The Best
20 / Our City Weston / August 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
is taking the world by storm offering cutting-edge strength training to students ages nine and up. The International Ballet Company (IBC), a non-profit youth organization affiliated with IDA, provides its dancers, tiny tots to pre-professional, the opportunity to take their pure classical ballet technique, which is emphasized in class, to the professional stage. Shows are SPECTACULAR with stunning costumes, magical special effects, wonderful music, and exciting and interesting original choreography. Dancers are introduced to the professional stage with two full-length ballets each year.
EVERY DANCER DREAMS OF BEING A PART OF THE MAGIC OF THE NUTCRACKER!
This all-time favorite Classic will be performed on December 16th 17th and 18th at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. The dancers, all pupils of IDA, perform to a capacity crowd in dazzling costumes amidst tantalizing stage effects (it even snows in South Florida!) Auditions will be held in September. In addition, each May, International Ballet Company performs in full-length production such as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs or Little Red Riding Hood. Every dancer, tiny-tots to seniors, shine on stage in a professional full-length extravaganza.
International Dance Academy, founded in 2000, is located in the Broward Lakes Business Park at 825 Shotgun Road in Weston. For more information on all programs call 954-476-4419 or visit www.IDAballet.com. FOLLOW US @IDABALLETWESTON
ROYAL ACADEMY OF DANCE
Students from the Academy achieve excellent results with the majority receiving the highest mark of distinction for their formal examinations. The world-recognized R.A.D. diploma sets the pupils a step above the rest in college applications or further advancement. Read more about it in this issue on page 32. Dancers achieving Distinction for their Advanced II examinations take part in an international competition, the Margot Fonteyn (formerly known as the Adeline Geneé), held annually in a city around the world. IDA is proud of the many pupils who qualified and who competed on the world-stage representing IDA and America. Paula Zapata, Indie Hurley and Elizabeth Haeflinger look forward to representing the USA and an exciting trip overseas.

T
he International Dance Academy (IDA), Florida’s premier ballet school, is bustling with excitement as it begins its 23rd year serving our community with excellence in Classical Ballet training. IDA is the most prestigious educational dance center in the area. In addition to the directors, who are active teachers and choreographers, IDA boasts an exceptionally well-trained and qualified international faculty. The outstanding premises have 5,500 sq. ft of dedicated space; three studios with sprung flooring, mirrors, and air-conditioning, in a safe and quiet location. IDA is the only school in South Florida to offer the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) instruction and formal certification under the patronage of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, firmly putting IDA in a class of its own! Students from the Academy achieve excellent results with the majority receiving the highest mark of distinction for their formal examinations. The world-recognized R.A.D. diploma sets the pupils a step above the rest in college applications or further advancement. Dancers obtaining distinction in their final exam, Advanced II, are invited to participate in the Olympics of ballet in a city around the world representing America. Read more about it in this issue. At IDA, dancers are highly motivated and learn to have confidence in themselves. They are educated in ballet technique, mostly in the French language. They are exposed to magnificent music by the masters and experience the valuable lessons and excitement of performing on stage and all that goes into producing a professional quality ballet performance. IDA is proud to produce dancers who are contracted to professional ballet companies immediately after graduation. Recently, Paula Zapata was accepted to the renowned ABT pre-professional program in New York City. Most graduates, on the strength of their dance ability, enter prestigious colleges and universities such as Notre Dame, Princeton, Yale, and Penn State, to mention just a few. It is an accepted fact that ballet students’ discipline and dedication set them apart from other students academically. IDA teachers are also certified in Progressive Ballet Technique (PBT) which

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING
Estate Planning is
LIFE PLANNING
E
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
state planning is not just a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. Estate planning is also life planning. Do you have minor children? If so, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse and your children in the event that you become disabled. Your plan should provide a source of funds for your children’s education, daycare and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. In addition, estate planning encompasses retirement planning and creditor protection planning. It has been estimated that more than half of all American adults have no estate plan in place. The distribution of their property, the care and custody of their minor children and the identification of who directs the administration of their estate is left to the state of Florida. Florida has very specific rules in place as to how assets are distributed if a person dies intestate, that is, without a will. What always surprises me is the fact that those people who have invested in an estate plan generally fail to revise or update their plan for up to 20 years. Imagine if you had done your estate plan 20 years ago and never updated it? How different are your financial and personal circumstances now compared with 20 years ago? Would the choices you made, people you identified, and concerns you addressed still be appropriate today? Probably not. A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, when you want and in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees, and costs to be borne by you and your loved ones. Estate planning can bring peace of mind in knowing that after you are gone, your spouse, children and even grandchildren can enjoy the property you leave to them, free from the claims of their creditors. You may rest easier knowing that a surviving spouse’s subsequent remarriage, a child’s marriage or divorce, or even an untimely lawsuit or bankruptcy, will not disrupt your loved ones ability to use and enjoy their inheritance. Your estate plan should be reviewed every two to four years. If you do not have an estate plan, or if you do but it is overdue for a review, it would be wise to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney without delay.
Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

content and language instruction in listening, speaking, reading, and writing let students develop the ability to generate spoken and written language about concepts in subject-area classes. For instance, students can perform lab
experiments and mathematics calculations and learn about history, all while using appropriate academic language. The direct instruction delivery in a typical American classroom is mainly in the official English language. A strong language demand is placed on all students in subject-area classes. Students in some content classes are required to read and assimilate advanced texts, and to make connections in writing. Taking into consideration these highlights, international parents should pay attention to their child’s individual needs towards getting success in American schools. It is clear the international -immigrant student must reach three goals progressively: (a) use of English to communicate in social settings, (b) use of English to achieve academically in all subject-areas, and (c) use of English in socially and culturally appropriate ways. Parent’s involvement is essential in this journey. It means teamwork that brings growth and enhances the American community! The goal is to train students to be independent learners and take control of their own thinking and understanding in their academic life, American new life.

VISTA PARK GETS NEXT GENERATION LED LIGHTS
he City of Weston has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, administered by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. This grant will be used towards the conversion of the sports field lighting at Vista Park to LED -- a project that has been on the planning list for park improvements for several years. The Land and Recreation Grants Program promotes and fosters partnerships to enhance and sustain Florida's natural and cultural resources and provide increased outdoor recreational opportunities for Florida residents and visitors. There are several advantages to LED lighting. In addition to reduced operating costs, providing a 35 to 50% savings in electricity. LED lights will also require less maintenance than traditional halogen lighting. LED also provides a brighter lighting system, making it safer for athletes and more pleasant for the fans watching from the sidelines, while focusing the light in such a way that there is little spill over to surrounding areas. The system is also more flexible than traditional halogen lighting – it turns on instantly and can be dimmed as needed.
The grant agreement was approved by the Weston City Commission at the June 21 Commission meeting. The LWCF grants require a 50% match by the City; therefore, the project will be budgeted in Fiscal Year 2023, which begins on October 1, 2022. The project will begin within the upcoming fiscal year.

REAT EXCITEMENT! Photographed here as they leave the examination room having danced their way to Distinction for their final examination, R.A.D. Advanced II, and the opportunity to travel overseas and represent International Dance Academy (IDA) and the United States in a world-recognized prestigious ballet competition. Congratulations to Paula Zapata, Indie Hurley and Elizabeth Haeflinger for an outstanding achievement. IDA is the only school in South Florida to offer the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) instruction and formal certification under the patronage of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, firmly putting IDA in a class of its own! Annually, IDA students from age 7 – 18 achieve excellent results for levels from Primary to Advanced II in their formal examinations.
The world-recognized R.A.D. diploma sets IDA pupils a step above the rest in college applications or further advancement. Paula, Indie and Elizabeth, by obtaining distinction for Advanced II, qualify to dance in the Margot Fonteyn International Ballet Competition (formerly Geneé) in a city to be announced. Only dancers who qualify with distinction are invited to join what is considered the Olympics of classical ballet competition. Usually no more than 30-35 dancers attend from countries all around the world, train together for a full week under the most celebrated choreographers and teachers in the world and perform their solos and unset class on stage before a capacity audience. Even though a Gold and Silver Medal is awarded, it is the prestige of having qualified that is the most coveted reward.

Cypress Bay Grad Lands Prestigious Internship
allie Carpinteri of Weston has been selected for the prestigious Television Academy Foundation Internship Program. She is one of just 40 students chosen by Television Academy members from across the country for the 2022 Summer Program. The Foundation’s annual Internship Program provides eight-week paid internships at top Hollywood studios and production companies to college students nationwide. Carpinteri attended Cypress Bay and is a 2022 graduate of the University of Florida who majored in digital film and television production. She will be interning this summer in the scripted development department at Phony Content, a production company in Los Angeles that creates stories that take place entirely on mobile phones. “I'm incredibly honored to have been chosen for this internship by Television Academy members,” said Carpinteri. “Growing up, I would watch the Emmy Awards each year and dream of one day being a part of them myself. I am forever grateful for this opportunity and to know that I have such an amazing network of people who believe in me. The chance to be a part of this internship program is thrilling, and I look forward to immersing myself in it. “As a child, watching television shows with my family is how we would connect and bond, even when our hectic lives were sometimes pulled in different directions,” continued Carpinteri. “As I got older, the television shows I loved gave me an outlet to discover myself and inspired me to pursue my own passions. Seeing strong female leads on TV chasing their dreams gave me the courage to do the same no matter what obstacles I may face. I had always had a love for storytelling and realized that I wanted to create the same kind of diverse, character-driven shows that would empower people the same way the shows I love did for me. “I am the oldest child of three and grew up in an FBI family,” Carpinteri added. “I'm the only child not pursuing a career in that field. However, it has inspired a lot of my ideas and has given me a love for the thriller/spy genre. My favorite TV show is Criminal Minds. “Growing up, I didn't always have the most confidence in myself and used to believe that finding a place in this industry was out of my reach. Being a part of this internship means that the little girl I was that always dreamed of working in television is being given a chance to grow and learn under the guidance of some of the most talented and driven members of the television industry. I feel so fortunate to be where I am today and to have this opportunity.” 36 / Our City Weston / August 2022

FOSTER YOUTH GRADUATES CELEBRATED

C
hildNet, a Community-Based Care lead agency that protects abused, abandoned, and neglected children throughout Broward and Palm Beach County, hosted the 18th Annual Broward Graduation Celebration to honor foster youth who graduated this year. Overcoming tremendous odds, a total of 128 youth was recognized for their academic achievements. ChildNet celebrated 19 middle schoolers, 72 high school/GED graduates, 20 special certifications, 10 Associates degrees, 6 Bachelor’s degrees and 1 Juris Doctor. “Many foster youth have defied the odds by receiving their degrees so it is an honor to celebrate and recognize them for this monumental achievement,” said Larry Rein,
ChildNet CEO & President. "We are very happy and amazed by what each graduate has achieved and will continue to achieve in this new and exciting chapter of their lives." Larry Rein delivered opening remarks during the graduation ceremony which was followed by a keynote address from Jeana Desis, a foster youth who is also a young mother and a recent graduate with a certificate in Culinary Arts. The presentation of certificates then took place, and the graduates were rewarded for their academic success with gifts from community partners. EARLY VOTING IS OPEN AUG 13 - AUG 21
he 2022 Florida Primary Election will be held on August 23, 2022. This will be the first election since districts were changed as a result of the redistricting process. Redistricting takes place every ten years following the United States census. Political districts for state and federal offices are determined by the Florida Legislature based on a number of factors including population and the political objectives of those in power. Closed Primary Visit the Broward County Supervisor of Elections website to locate your voting place, confirm your voter registration status, and view your sample ballot. Florida is a “closed primary” state. In partisan office contests in a primary election, a voter may only vote for the candidates of the party in which he or she is registered. That’s
why different ballot styles exist in a primary election. The voter’s ballot style is tied to his or her party affiliation. Voters registered with no party affiliation (NPA) are not eligible to vote for partisan candidates in a primary election.
Early Voting Early voting is a great way to cast your ballot ahead of time and works exactly the same way as voting on election day. Except, any Broward voter can vote at any early voting location. Early voting for the August primary election is from August 13 through August 21, 2022. Early voting is open from 10:00 am - 7:00 pm. WESTON REAL ESTATE MARKET UPDATE
I
t is no secret that the recent real estate market has been nothing short of a frenzy of activity. Lack of supply, overwhelming demand, and low-interest rates drove our skyrocketing home prices and record-breaking sales. Today we are seeing a shift and an increase in the supply of homes on the market coupled with higher interest rates. 6 months ago, Weston had 36 homes on the market. As I write this, we have 139 single-family homes active on the market in Weston.
How will the increase in supply and higher interest rates impact our local market?
Home prices are not predicted to fall. Higher rates may lessen the competition and reduce buying power; however, instead of expecting prices to drop, you will see fewer bidding wars over homes and homes

selling closer to their asking price rather than high above the list price. (This does not mean that homes will sell below their list price if priced correctly.) Buyers will continue to see more homes and opportunities to buy what they have been looking for. Sellers can still get exactly what their home is worth and then some! With higher interest rates, you may not have 20 buyers fighting over your home and your home may take slightly longer to sell. With more choices for buyers, those above-value sales will trend back to normal values. Home prices will continue to rise, just not at the exponential rate of the past year. Weston is one of the most desirable places to live so the demand for Weston homes will always be strong. Consistently voted one of the best and safest cities to live in, people move to Weston for the schools, lifestyle, and safety. Weston has everything you could want from activities to restaurants to the best neighbors! It is still an amazing time to sell and a great
time to buy. Weston is always a top-performing housing market and always a good investment!

uly 4th is a special day for America. On this day in 1776, America became independent from Great Britain. Since then, July 4th has become a holiday in which we reflect upon how lucky we are to be free. Like the rest of America, the Rotary Club of Weston proudly celebrates Independence Day every year. For more than 117 years, Rotary's people of action have used their collective passion, energy, and intelligence to take action on projects around the world. Rotary is made up of 1.4 million passionate individuals in 35,000+ clubs worldwide. We believe that we have a shared responsibility to combat our world's most persistent issues: promoting peace, fighting diseases, saving mothers and children, supporting education, growing local economies, and providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene. In addition, Rotary provides service to others, promotes integrity, and advances world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders. For the past 18 years, Rotary has participated in Weston's annual 4th of July parade. It is a wonderful feeling to see a child waving along the parade route and know that we share this beautiful city. 60 / Our City Weston / August 2022
Rotary's parade float is one of many events we participate in to support our local community and others we host. The 2nd Annual Rotary Club of Weston Food and Wine Festival is this September 22, 2022, at the Bonaventure Town Center Club. ■ POSITIVE PARENTING
THE POWER OF CHOICE By Molly Brousseau
E
very parent knows the bedtime battle or has uttered the words “if you don’t put your shoes on in the next 5 minutes I’m going to …”. With summer coming to an end and school starting back up, we as parents are dreading getting back into the routine and the messy morning struggles. What if I told you there could be an easier way to deal with the power struggles between you and your strong-willed child? The first thing to remember is, like many of us, children want control. And this is not necessarily a bad thing. According to Parent League of New York “When they feel a sense of control, children and teens are focused, goal-directed, present-centered and optimistic—and not highly stressed.” When you are fighting with your child to brush their teeth in the morning, take the stress out by offering 2 positive choices. Positive choices mean 2 things where both
options are valuable and acceptable, as apposed to what some of us were raised on, “eat your food or starve”. One was positive and the other negative. An Example of positive choices in this case would be “Its time to brush your teeth, do you want to put the toothpaste on yourself, or do you want mom to help you?” or “It’s time to put your shoes on, do you want to wear the red ones or the blue ones?” This is not only making it less stressful, but they are using their power of decision-making skills and higher order thinking to complete the task. When they can make the decision, they feel like they have “won” or they are back in charge. Blogger and child therapist Our Mama Village, says that when we repeatedly ask our child to hurry up, or go faster, we are passing on our own anxiety to our children and they may freeze or not be able to think of what to do next. Instead, we can give them specific steps. “First, put your shoes on, then come back here and tell me your ready”. Also, explain to them why it is they need to hurry. Children are much more able to understand situations when we give them
a timeline or a reason why (no one misses the “why” stage). “Mommy needs you to put your shoes on, so we don’t miss the bus”. When all else fails make it a game. One that works well in my house “I bet I can put my shoes on and be at the door before you can” Again, giving them that sense of control when you let them “win”. Children love to be in control and as a parent, we can use this to our advantage by allowing them to make the decisions sometimes. When we shift the focus from being in charge to a sense of cooperation- everyone has the opportunity to feel powerful!

PEDIatric Foot & Ankle Sprains May Be a More Complex Growth Plate Injury By Dr. Carlo A. Messina
I
njuries to the growth plate in children may cause damage to the structures at the end of the bone that will allow the child’s bone to grow to full adult size. X-rays can fail to provide a complete and accurate picture of the diagnosis. These injuries may be misdiagnosed as a simple sprain of the foot or ankle. However, a more complex injury may be present. Growth plates, which start to close between the ages of 13 and 18, can be damaged in incidents such as simple falls, sports injuries, automobile accidents or other major or minor trauma. If not recognized and treated early, a child’s growth plate injury can lead to shortening of the bone (growth ceases) as the growth plate may close prematurely. Angular deformities of the bone (a curve) may also develop. The severity of these deformities depends on the age at the time of injury, extent of the injury and the part of the growth plate that has been damaged. Certain portions of the growth plate may be injured affecting its growth while other parts grow more normally thus causing a bowing of the bone. Symptoms of a growth plate injury may mimic a sprain. These injuries occur more frequently than realized. There will always be pinpoint tenderness on the bone’s growth plate and a degree of swelling that is proportional to the degree of injury to the area. The child will often limp and try to avoid the body part. Normal treatment for a sprain may involve simple observation and application of an ace bandage or brace. This treatment for a growth plate injury that is severe may be devastating. X-rays are used to evaluate bone and joint alignment. A growth plate can be injured or even fractured with a normal X-ray. In more moderate to severe cases, x-rays will usually show the fracture. When in doubt, a CT scan may be necessary.
Treatment options include:
1. Immobilization in a below-theknee cast with or without crutches may be necessary if the growth plate is well aligned. These injuries will heal on their own within six to eight weeks. The younger the child, the faster it heals. 2. If the injury has caused misalignment of the growth plate it can sometimes be carefully manipulated back into place and then protected with a cast. The cast would be necessary for a minimum of six to eight weeks. Non-weight bearing would be mandatory. 3. If the misalignment is more severe and not able to be manipulated back into its normal position, surgery would be necessary to restore the growth plate to its proper position. This may help avoid later problems including malalignment or premature growth plate closure that may cause the extremity to be shortened and crooked. The most important thing is immediate diagnosis and treatment.

OCULAR ALLERGIES By Dr. Jane Therrien, Optometric Physician
O
cular allergies are the abnormal response of sensitive eyes to contact with allergens and other irritating substances. Often negatively affecting quality of life meriting consideration for customized treatment plans instead of one-size-fits-all, over-the-counter (OTC) relief. Ocular allergies, or allergic conjunctivitis, is one of the most common ocular surface diseases in primary eye care. Seasonal allergic conjunctivitis and perennial allergic conjunctivitis alone make up 95% of all allergic conjunctivitis in the U.S. Yet allergic conjunctivitis is often unaddressed largely due to its relatively benign nature. While allergists consider the respiratory ramifications, doctors of optometry can co-manage patients for their ocular allergies, bolstering their overall care and quality of life.
Causes & Risk Factors
causes—allergens. ▸ Seasonal causes—contact lens reaction. ▸ Chronic ▸ Symptoms can occur in one or both eyes: ▸ Symptoms ▸ Itching. ▸ Redness. ▸ Swelling.
Diagnosis
A comprehensive eye exam as other causes such as dry eye and blepharitis have similar symptoms.
Treatment
the counter allergy eye drops. ▸ Over the counter oral allergy medication. ▸ Over Consult a doctor of optometry if symptoms don't subside or worsen over time to discuss possible prescription drops or oral medication.
Prevention
Use over the counter or prescription (as needed) allergy medications prior to and during allergy season.

How Good Is Your
Alignment?
T
he single most im p o r t an t – and frequently overlooked – full swing fundamental in golf is the setup position. So, here are some stepby-step tips for how to take your stance and achieve that perfect setup.
Alignment in the Golf Stance
At address your body (feet, knees, hips, forearms, shoulders and eyes) should be positioned parallel to the target line. When viewed from behind, a right-handed golfer will appear aimed slightly left of the target. This optical illusion is created because the ball is on the target line and the body is not.
By Dean Sklar, PGA Professional
Foot Position
Your feet should start out shoulder-width apart but adjust depending on whether you’re playing woods/long irons, middle irons or short irons. The feet should be shoulder-width (outside of the shoulders to the inside of the heels) for the middle irons. The short iron stance will be two inches narrower and the stance for long irons and woods should be two inches wider. The target-side foot should be flared toward the target from 20 to 40 degrees to allow the body to rotate toward the target on the downswing. The back foot should be square (90 degrees to the target line) to slightly open to create the proper hip turn on the back swing. Your flexibility and body rotation speed determine the proper foot placement.
driver is to be played off the inside left heel. Keep Your Weight on the Balls of Your Feet Your weight should be balanced on the balls of the feet, not on the heels or toes. With short irons, your weight should be 60% on the target-side foot. For middle iron shots the weight should be 50/50 or equal on each foot. For your longest clubs, place 60% of your weight on the backside foot. This will help you swing the club on the correct angle on the back swing.
The Final Setup Positions
Always practice proper alignment out on the driving range by placing two clubs down on the ground parallel to each other after you feel you are properly aligned to your intended target and see how well you are lined up. Better yet, while on the golf course ask your playing partner to stand behind you and see if you Ball Position in the Golf Stance are properly aligned. Ear Infections By Miguel E. Cordova, DVM
What Is an Ear Infection?
The medical term for an ear infection is otitis. Ear infections generally begin as inflammation of the skin inside the outer ear canal (the tube-shaped part of the ear visible under the ear flap). Once inflammation is present, discharge, redness, and other characteristics of an ear infection become established. Inflammation of the canal leads to the overgrowth of normal bacteria and yeast that live in the ear; other “opportunistic” bacteria can also take advantage of the inflammation and unhealthy environment inside the ear to establish infection. The overgrowth of these organisms causes more inflammation and other unhealthy changes inside the ear. In some cases, ear infections that start in the outer ear canal can progress to involve the middle ear and inner ear. Deep infections can lead to deafness and other complications.
What Causes Ear Infections?
Any pet can develop otitis regardless of ear shape, exposure to water (swimming), or the amount of hair inside the ear canal. Ear infections in dogs and cats are most often the result of an underlying problem. Many conditions can predispose a pet to developing an ear infection, including the following:
(food allergy or inhalant allergy) ▸ Allergies Ear mites ▸ Polyps or other growths in the ear canal ▸ Systemic illnesses such as thyroid dis▸ ease and adrenal gland disease (in dogs) material in the ears, including ▸ Foreign dirt, sand, or plant material Ear infections are painful. Some pets with this condition may even try to bite people who try to touch their ears or head (including their owners). The clinical signs of otitis can vary depending on the severity of the inflammation, but can include the following:
the head or rubbing the head ▸ Shaking and ears on the floor or on furniture ▸ Scratching the ears
from the ears (can ▸ Discharge sometimes have a very bad odor)
of the ear canal and ▸ Redness ear flap; the ears may also feel
warm when touched Some pets with severe otitis may cry or groan as they rub and scratch their ears. Some pets scratch so severely that their nails create wounds on the skin around their face, neck, and ears. If the otitis is severe or chronic, the outer ear canal can begin to thicken and become deformed. This thickening can make the ear opening very narrow, so cleaning the ears becomes more difficult. Ulcerations on the inside of the ear canal can also result from infection and trauma.
Why Are Antibiotics Necessary to Treat Ear Infections?
Once the inflammation associated with an ear infection is established, bacteria (and yeast) can create secondary infections. These infections can be relatively straightforward to diagnose and treat with antibiotics or anti-fungal medications. Still, the underlying reason for the inflammation must be addressed, or the secondary infections are likely to recur. Diagnosing the underlying cause can be challenging and may require additional testing. During a physical examination, your veterinarian may use a cotton swab to collect some debris from your pet’s ear. This material can be placed on a slide and examined under a microscope to determine if the infection is due to yeast, bacteria, or mites. Your veterinarian may also recommend bacterial culture and sensitivity testing of the debris found inside your pet’s ear. This information can help determine the best medications to treat the infection. Your veterinarian will also likely clean your pet’s ears to remove as much debris as possible before treatment begins. Cleaning begins creating a healthier environment inside the ear—an environment that will not continue to support bacterial overgrowth.

How Can Future Ear Infections Be Prevented?
Once an infection has resolved, regular cleaning helps prevent recurrence by promoting a healthy environment inside the outer ear canal. Never insert a cotton swab into your pet’s ear canal; these swabs can rupture the eardrum, which could lead to additional complications. If you are uncomfortable cleaning your pet’s ears, ask your veterinary team to review ear cleaning procedures with you. Underlying conditions, such as allergies, should also be addressed to help prevent recurrence of ear infections. Returning for regular check-ups with your veterinarian is also an important way to track your pet’s progress and catch ear infections early before they have a chance to get firmly reestablished. any families do not have the ability to pay for their child’s college education. Based on a family’s socio-economic status they may qualify for aide; however, there is a large group of people who do not qualify for assistance based on income and still do not have the ability to save or pay for their child’s tuition. Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program establishes lottery-funded scholarships to reward Florida high school graduates for high academic achievement. Students can be awarded up to 100% of tuition for college or a technical college for a vocation or industry certification based on the level of the scholarship earned. Each level of scholarship has varying criteria determined by the students’ grade point average, ACT/SAT scores and completing the required number of community service hours. The new law

■ SAFETY CORNER
Safety Tips for Heading Back to School
A
ugust is filled with last-minute summer fun and preparations for the back-to-school season. As students and families ease into their routines and the local roads become busier with walkers, bikers, and drivers, please take a moment to review some essential considerations as we share the street to keep everyone on our roadways safe. For some parents, the new school year is a repeat of previous years, and they know what to expect, a backup of vehicles in carpool lines, school zone speed limits, new crosswalks and crossing guards, and bicyclists. For some parents or inexperienced drivers, this is a new experience, and they should be mindful of increased traffic around school zones. When planning your day's activities, please leave extra time and pack a little extra patience, especially as the school year starts. Slow down in school zones to the posted speed limit, and yield to pedestrians. Pay closer attention to changes in traffic patterns and make any necessary accommodations or considerations to share the road safely. Parents/caregivers of teen drivers should plan and review the expected driving route to school together and their expectations for safe driving. Safe driving should always include wearing a seat belt, paying attention to speed limits, and avoiding having too many passengers or any distractions such as loud music or texting while driving. Parents and teens should be familiar with Florida's Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) laws, which allow teen drivers to safely gain driving experience under lower-risk conditions before obtaining full driving privileges. These laws outline limits and restrictions for new drivers ages 15 through 17 and are designed to help teens gradually and safely build their skills and experience behind the wheel. For more information on Florida's GDL Law, please visit https://www.flhsmv.gov. If your child rides a bike to school, it's important that they know the rules of the road and avoid any distractions while riding. Always wear a properly fitted bike helmet every time they ride a bike. For help with how to properly fit a bike helmet, please review this safety video https:// www.safekids.org/video/safety-seconds-bike-helmets from Safe Kids Worldwide or make an appointment for a helmet fitting with Weston's BSO Fire Rescue Life Safety Educator by calling 954-991-3501. Wear bright clothing so bicyclists are more visible to drivers and always ride in the bike lane in the direction of traffic. Bus riding children should know their bus pick-up and drop-off locations. Children are encouraged to stay at least six feet away from the road while waiting for the bus. Children should also be reminded to wait until the bus stops before approaching and not to run into the road for any reason. If your child plans to walk to school, parents should develop and review a walking safety plan. Children should always walk on the sidewalk whenever possible, know how to cross the street safely, and limit or eliminate distractions such as reading, texting, and electronic toys while walking. Be sure children learn to make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street. Parents may want to consider practicing their walking safety plan with children in advance for younger children. Back-to-school is an exciting time for many. These safety tips can and should be followed year-round. However, as traffic on our roadways increases, back-to-school time is a great time for all of us to be reminded about the simple steps we can take to reduce the incidents of accidents and/or injuries and share the road safely. As your local business advocate, our chamber leadership is currently reviewing our legislative agenda to ensure that our focus is reflective of the current economic climate and priorities. We are dedicated to representing the interests of our business members and continuing to make southwest Broward a thriving place to live, work, and play. Midterm elections are soon approaching, especially primary elections later this month. As stakeholders in our community, it’s important that everyone participates in the democratic process of electing our representatives and voicing our opinions on important ballot questions. If you have not done so, we urge you to register to vote or check your registration status at www. browardvotes.gov. Our chamber will always support legislation that will help our businesses thrive. We are a nonpartisan organization and support pro-business initiatives. If you have a business in the area, or if your ideal customers are in Weston, come check out what the chamber can offer you. Chamber membership offers businesses visibility in the community, networking opportunities, support through advocacy, and credibility in the eyes of consumers. he Weston community showed its patriotic pride throughout Independence Day Weekend. This year's festivities kicked off in the evening on Sunday, July 3rd. Thousands flocked to Weston Regional Park for live entertainment, games, inflatable slides, events and, of course, the fireworks display.

his year's theme for Weston's Hometown Fourth of July Celebration Parade was: Fun, Freedom & Fireworks. Participants and onlookers dressed up in the best red, white and blue to enjoy the show. Everyone loves a parade! Westonians arrived early to secure curbside seating along the parade route on Main Street. A seasonal shower at the beginning of the Parade added a bit of complication but
the parade went off without a hitch. Local businesses, civic groups, schools, bands, organizations, local elected leaders, and residents all participated. There were even visits from Uncle Sam and some of our favorite Disney characters. What a great time for all!
