“Hot Springs Gay Pride” Formational Meeting

straight owned establishment has offered to welcome the Gay community.

“Hot Springs Gay Pride” Formational Meeting was

Anne K made an appeal to our group to work with other groups in LR that have common goals. Counter points made by Trevor and Alan were made. Although no one in this group is against the idea of helping other groups, we need to form this one first and establish ourselves, first.

held at 7:20 pm at 1501 Park Avenue.

Trevor Nelson called the meeting to order and offered to preside over the meeting. ◾Hosts Tab and Eli were thanked for their generosity ◾Neil and Alan were thanked for the electronic devices ◾Thanks and welcome to all in attendance After a brief discussion about Parliamentary Procedure, it was decided to conduct the meeting with less formality. Trevor spoke about the fractured condition of the Hot Springs Gay Community. Having no centralized meeting point we’ve devolved into small factions...but that our strength lies in numbers. Questions posed to those in attendance: ◾What are we known for? ANSWER: Caring and Compassion Why are we organizing? For what purpose? What do we hope to accomplish? After much discussion the group continued to reiterate these points: ◾Break Stereotypes through community outreach (through volunteerism) ◾Show of power (strength in numbers) ◾To re-establish the gay community as a community ◾Support groups working to change legislation such as AfE or AIME ◾Maintain a message board where important events and political info directly related to Gays in Hot Springs can be posted and maintained. ◾Establish a link to a separate page (Facebook or other) to use for chatting, advertising gay businesses, etc. ◾Participate in LR October Pride event (if possible) ◾Apply to have a float in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Shon and James spoke about their involvement in several groups in LR and about their experience with their gay news paper called Pink Spectrum in 2006. Anne J had a conversation with the owner of The Corner Bar (formerly known as Hard Times). This

Discussion was held about the scope of the group: lesbian and gay? Tranny? Intersexed? Diversity? Straight? Someone suggested “Make the gay agenda the Human Agenda.” It was generally decided that although we stand for all human rights, and women’s rights, that this group was founded specifically to advance the rights of Lesbians and Gays in Hot Springs/Arkansas. Mya/Larry and Eli offered web design skills Debate was held over our group name: some want it to be LGBTQ, some want it to say “and straight allies.” Some don’t want it to say gay at all, others insisted that it must say gay to self identify. This discussion was tabled until next meeting, and a call for slogans, acronyms, group names, and mission statement was made. General discussion was had about how we would like to govern our group. Trevor asked for a show of hands to see who wants to hold an office such as president. No one volunteered. Neil suggested a decentralized form of governance, by quorum. Eli made a motion to adopt the “Quorum of Nine” Alan seconded the motion...motion passed. (This means that if at least 9 of us show up to a meeting we can conduct business. Any nine. It must also be noted that this form of governance depends on a clear mission statement and some sort of constitution in order to be effective. The Quorum of 9 promises to use our mission statement and constitution to guide any decisions made.) Intermission Meeting Called back to order Ann Q invited our group to participate in the Seeds of Peace event on Sept 21 from 9-11. Sponsored by “R.E.G.A.R.D”, Seeds of Peace is an inter-faith/inter-

community/celebration of tolerance and diversity in Hot Springs. Booths are $5, and if we offer some sort of activity they waive the fee. Several expressed that this venue would be a good first “coming out” for the group.

laws in the public schools, to make ourselves know to city council members, consider forming a chapter of PFLAG, work toward domestic partnership on a city level such as Eureka Springs currently enjoys, to assist the marriage equality ballot initiatives.

Alan and Joe suggested the UU Church on Spring as a possible meeting place. They are active in social justice, HIV causes, and support R.E.G.A.R.D.

Business for next meeting: ◾Create a name for the group ◾Create mission statement out of submissions ◾work on or choose a logo ◾Discuss the booth at the Seeds of Changes event

Trey from A.I.M.E. gave us encouragement by reminding us to remain involved politically, to pridefully engage in public service, to do volunteer work. In particular he asked us to push and work for anti-discrimination laws in the work place, anti-discrimination by-

Next meeting: July 28th 7 pm, Fordyce Ricks Estate at 1501 Park All are welcome

Hot Springs Gay Pride Meeting Sunday, July 28, 2013 Unitarian Universalist Church on Spring Street Bring suggestions for mission statements, slogan, acronyms, logos, and anything else we should discuss. Bring friends, a drink or snack to share if you are able, and a chair!

GRTC for 7-22-2013 edition Howdy Campers. Well we are Going into the hot dog days of summer. No group events scheduled in the near future. Thomas Speakmon-Smith and Glen will be on the injured reserve list for the next month or so after Glen’s back surgery on Thursday the 18th. If you know of any relevant events going on send us the info and we will get it posted. We have a website in the works GRTC.info it’s a work in progress But would like to thank Charles Tinsley for his help in this. A website will allow us to put out a lot more info and different things that currently Facebook doesn’t make possible for us. We want to include links of gay owned and gay friendly camp grounds, resorts, hotels etc. So if you know of some you think we should include send us a message at gayroadtrippingcampers@ gmail.com, or on facebook as a post on our group page. Thomas and Glen along with all the founders of this group are very happy with what the group has accomplished and excited at the trips we have had and plans we have for the future. If you haven’t joined us yet please do so, it isn’t like some of the other gay groups that some might not feel comfortable with and we have a lot of fun and have met a lot of new friends. We have the Cactus canyon trip (may not be for everyone) the first weekend in October and our Annual Petit Jean Anniversary weekend the first weekend in

December planned and we will plan some other trips soon. One we will be having hopefully September possibly is a short trip to Choctaw area near Clinton. Nice little Campground with a nice lake for swimming, fishing and boating. Hopefully have another meet and greet night out at Trax or one of the other Our Gang bars. We hope to have that planned as soon as the back will heal enough. Would also like to thank our sponsor Our Gang for all their help and support they have given our group and for the outstanding leadership and support they continually give our community. Look forward to meeting more of ya’ll and look forward to many adventures ahead. Peace, Love and Happy Camping! and Remember You’ve got a friend in GRTC! -Glen Smith Life is short, Decide whats most important to you and Live like it is.
