On November 14, 2013, at the Philander Smith College Bless the Mic series, Bryant Huddleston was the speaker. As many may remember, he was not allowed to speak at his old high school in Imboden, AR. He was to speak at his younger sister’s graduation. The reason? Because he is a gay man. He gave a terrific talk and then very generously made a donation to CAR to support our efforts, especially our program for LGBTQ and ally youth, DYSC. Thank you Bryant and thank you to the other ex-pats who reach back and support our efforts here in Arkansas.

Justin Case - It’s an honor for all of us, y’all. I could start listing names, but it would go on forever, and I’d forget someone, of course. But for everyone who comes out to participate in every show or event, or for those who just come to watch and donate to the cause, or even for those who just cheer us on. This is for everyone!

2013 Christmas Caravan & Outreach December 21 8:00 AM • Breakfast Served 9:00 AM • Outreach Services Begin 10:00 AM • Santa Claus and Caravan Gifts 11:00 AM • Lunch Served FREE TROLLEY RIDES TO THE CLINTON CENTER 8:00 AM — Noon The Christmas Caravan is an annual outreach event that provides basic necessities to homeless adults, and toys and other items as gifts for homeless and near-homeless children. The mission of the Caravan is to ensure that those without homes and those without adequate resources will have the opportunity to experience true joy in the celebration of the season. This year, we are combining the Christmas Caravan with an Outreach Services event which involves volunteer organizations from throughout the community. These groups will provide homeless citizens of Central Arkansas with access to needed services and resources including medical and dental screenings, entitlement assistance and access to the Affordable Care Act services, legal advocacy, haircuts, and other services. If you are part of an organization that would like to participate in this part of the program, please register as a provider by clicking here or using the menu on the left. The Caravan is made up of volunteers who bring automobiles loaded with clothing, hygiene supplies, and other donations and gifts. Led by Santa Claus, they travel parade-style to the distribution site. The participants are encouraged to decorate their vehicles and wear Christmas-themed clothing to create a festive atmosphere. At the distribution site, clothing and other articles and gifts are given to those who have gathered to participate. Santa always has a busy morning spreading the holiday spirit! Basic needs are provided, breakfast is served to the homeless, toys are distributed to the children, and everyone involved has a wonderful and fulfilling morning. The Caravan began in 2005 and has grown every year, blessed with volunteers from youth groups, churches, schools, social organizations, and social services agencies, as well as individuals and families. We are thankful for all of our volunteers and donors. To learn more about supporting or participating in the Caravan, contact event coordinator Sandra R. Wilson at 501-580-6185 or sandra@christmascaravan.org.

Christmas Caravan Donations Many items can be collected by placing donation boxes out at your church or workplace. If you would like a speaker to provide a short presentation for your group/ church/place of worship about the Christmas Caravan, contact me at 501-580-6185 or Sandra@ChristmasCaravan.org. Our goal is to provide a celebration of Christmas with the homeless in a fun atmosphere, while also providing some vital services for them during the same event. Please review the donation categories and choose the items you or your group will be able to provide. Include your selections on your registration form so we will be able to track the items and know what is still needed along the way. Let us know if you will be able to deliver your items or if you need someone to pick them up. All donations are tax deductible and receipts will be provided at the event. What to donate We can always use donations of money to help with various incidental costs of the Caravan, such as supplies, signs, porable toilets, etc. Use the PayPal button on the left side of this web site. Donations to REACH OUT are tax deductible in accordance with IRS 501c3 guidelines. Here are the other things that we need: Christmas Gifts - These are always welcome for the kids in this transitional environment. The gifts should come wrapped and marked to show it is for a boy or a girl and what age range. New items are preferred, but gently used toys are also welcome. Please make sure that any toy you are donating for a child is clean, in good working condition, and has batteries if needed. For kids under 12, toys are most popular. You can ask for advice from the toy store manager for age appropriate items. Please don’t forget the teenagers out there! Gift cards for work great, either a basic Visa card that can be used anywhere or specific cards for movie tickets, fast food, etc. Candy, decorative pins, hats, and wearable ornaments are welcome and make the event even more festive. Christmas cards signed by your family, church, or group also are a thoughtful touch to let the homeless know that we care that they enjoy and have a meaningful Christmas. Blank Christmas cards in envelopes with a stamp attached are also a great idea. This allows them to mail good wishes to their family and provides an opportunity

to make contact with loved ones. Clothing - Think of what is needed for spending a great deal of time outdoors. Men’s, women’s and children’s winter clothing like jeans, T- shirts, sweaters, and thermal underwear Outer wear like coats, stocking caps, scarves, and gloves Shoes, socks in all sizes for men, women, and children Outdoor Living Items - Generally, this means any camping items useful to support an extended camping environment. Sleeping bags and blankets Backpacks and tote bags Tents and plastic tarps Small camping stoves Other camping equipment (please specify in your registration form) Goody Bags - These packets are essential for folks on the street and can include various items from the lists below and are best if sealed in gallon size zip bags. You may assemble your own bags to bring on the day of the Caravan or contact usn to coordinate pick-up so they can be assembled into packets for distribution ahead of the event. Critical items: Travel size- Shampoo/ conditioner Deodorant Bars of soap Washcloths Lotion Brushes/combs Toothbrushes Toothpaste Feminine products (mark the bag male vs. female to ensure accurate delivery) Nice-to-have items: Band-aids Cough drops Matches Shaving cream (travel size) Razors (disposable) Q-tips Playing cards Drink mixes (e.g. Crystal Light) Non-perishable snack items: cheese or peanut butter crackers, Vienna sausages, canned meats, crackers, peanuts, raisins, etc. (Be sure that a can opener is not required!)
