Launching Arkansas LGBTQ Elders A Steering Committee has been formed committed to establishing a new organization called Arkansas LGBTQ Elders. The main goal of this group at the moment will be to morph into an Affiliate of SAGE (Service & Advocacy for Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender Elders) becoming SAGE Little Rock and part of SAGEnet. Currently there is no service and advocacy organization for LGBTQ seniors in this area and LGBTQ seniors are often isolated and lack of a place to socialize with other seniors. Other problems include attitudes from indifference to discrimination, and no easy way to find welcoming affordable housing, assisted living places, nursing homes, and medical assistance. These are some of the issues SAGE would help us address. They are the oldest and largest organization of its kind and offer their Affiliates considerable support and guidance. LGBT Elders are a vibrant and contributing part of our society with much to offer. but are in need of some help. For additional information visit facebook.com/Arkansas.LGBTQ.Elders and sageusa.org. More information about a first meeting will be coming soon. facebook.com/Arkansas.LGBTQ. http://sageusa.org/index.cfm

THE GHOST OF TRAX Upon purchasing 415 Main, it was discovered along with the building came a resident ghost. In becoming aware of this there was extensive research regarding 415 Main’s history. Not all you are about to read is factually recorded, but was told to us by old-timers. The building was the last building built on the block. It was built in the early 1920’s. The big industry in those days was the railroad trade. The railroad tracks ran right through where the restaurant is today. When 415 was built originally, it was two buildings under one roof with a basement underneath. It had two front doors; one for each side there was 415 and 415 ½ Main. The wall between these two still stands. In 1921 the 4151/2 side was a brothel. There was a small entrance the patrons came into with two cane back chairs and of course Miss Birdie (the proprietor). The patrons were assigned to whomever was available. Supposedly, there was a waiting line due to the railroad workers and riverboat workers. At 415, there was a dingy, dirt-floored bar. This area was considered so rough; it was off limits to the military!! Miss Birdie’s establishment had an unfortunate turn of fate when on night a patron from 415 came a callin’. It seems as though his heart had been stolen by one of Miss Birdie’s employees, a 13-year-old girl. Her name was Anastasia and she promised to be true to only him. When someone at the bar told him he had seen “just seen” Anastasia, he went to Miss Birdie’s searched out Anastasia and cut her throat from ear to ear, threw her over the balcony, jumped out the window and escaped. This caused 415 ½ to close. In 1923 a mortuary came to 415 ½ Main. The undertaker used the basement for his embalm
ing procedures. Legend has it when he closed, he left all the equipment and who only knows what else in the basement. In 1929, a newspaper stand came into the building. It also handles illegal liquors and beer. During this time, the heart broken murderer came back to 415 ‘/2 for the last time.? He got into an argument and got his throat cut wide open and died in the spot. In 1935, the entire building was sold and prohibition was lifted. Holes were knocked in the walls by the same sledgehammers that were used to bust illegal liquor barrels. At this time, the place became Maxwell’s Coffee House. Don’t let the name fool you; it was still just an old beer joint. Only now, they had tables that set on sawdust floors and served a little food. It was still patronized by railroad and river folks and now people of the neighborhood. We are told it was quite a gathering place where everyone from 10 years old could get a cold beer. In the mid to late 40’s the place sold again. The name remained the same, but the patrons changed. You would see men and women that would remind you of the film “The Wild Bunch”. It was affectionately referred to as a knife and gun club. If you didn’t have one, when you entered you were issued one. The place sold several times over the years all keeping the same name and same group of people. It was common occurrence for a patron to ride their motorcycle in the bar, have a few, visit with friends and ride out the back door, never getting off their bike. There was even a big movie star or two that visited Maxwell’s Coffee House. Brian Boswell filmed quite an action scene for the movie “Stone Cold” in the place. He and several others rode their Harley’s through the window of what would have been 415 ½
In 1996, Jim and Margarett Hinson purchased the building and began to renovate. Once all the years of grease and tobacco were scraped off a beautiful tin ceiling was revealed. The tin ceiling and skylights are all original. The arches were carefully sculptured from the holes that had been pounded into the brick divider wall that was originally in place. 415 Main was now Diamond Jim’s Fine Dining. With crystal glassware, fine china, elegant silverware polished brass and the finest of furnishings. Main Street was being renovated at that time. The beautiful sidewalks and streetscape are the end results. It was also the end results for Diamond Jim’s. The street renovations didn’t start when scheduled and lasted much longer than planned. At times, ladies dressed in fine clothing had to walk a plank across an open trench to get to the front door. This left many open seats inside. From the time the remodeling began to the present there have been some very strange occurrences in this beautiful building. During renovations, the carpenters had a heck of a time working because their extension cords kept loosing power for no apparent reason. Water has begun running in the kitchen and bathrooms, lights have flickered, the oven has lit itself, pilots on the stove go off and things get moved around the building often. On one occasion, a top shelf behind the bar containing crystal stemware came out over the bar and dropped to the floor, busting the crystal into millions of pieces. The glass shelf did not break and no one was behind the bar at the time. Another time, the Chef witnessed the breaker box door opening and closing for no apparent reason. The Chef quit immediately.
