In this Corner, Contestant Number 1 Posted on October 1, 2013 by Freddy Prinze Charming Oh yes, pageant season is back in full swing and already there is news of ridiculousness happening in the drag world. You have the inevitable people crying “rigged!” and the people who are trying to do the rigging. You have the ones who are convinced they have it “in the bag”, only to be knocked off their high horse. There are the copycats, the egotists, the unorganised, the lifers, the pouters, the tantrum throwers and the truly talented and they all converge during this glorious season. And I LOVE watching from the sidelines. Some pageants go off without a hitch. Everyone knows and understands what is expected of them, from the hosts to the judges to the contestants. There is no drama and people are genuinely happy for the person that wins. And then there are the other types of pageants: The “favourite” to win, doesn’t. Or does, despite a messy package. Hosts and judges are drunk, and acting like idiots. Everyone is running around like chickens with their heads cut off, and no one seems to know their ass from a hole in the head. From an outsider’s perspective those are the most interesting, but I always feel bad for those involved. Train wrecks are never fun for those actually IN them. Here are some basic tips to keep in mind during this pageant season: Promoters and Organisers: Make sure you know what you’re doing and that the DJ and host(s) can follow along with the program. There is nothing more off-putting to a contestant than the DJ playing the wrong music, hosts getting names wrong, or trying to be “funny” during on-stage question. Ensure judges are aware of protocol, ie. not being drunk while judging, interview is not a gossip session, etc. If the pageant becomes a train wreck, it’s on you. Judges: You are going to be deciding who wins and who doesn’t. That’s a big responsibility. Don’t get wasted! While volunteering last year for the Phoenix Pride prelims we made it very clear to the judges that they were not to be intoxicated while judging. You want to get wasted after the pageant? Fine. But
don’t be an ass during it. Unprofessional judges reflect poorly not only on you, but on the promoter and the system as a whole. If there is an interview category, do not use that as an opportunity to engage, or try to engage the contestant, in community gossip. If you cannot abide by these very simple guidelines, maybe you should say “thanks but no thanks” to the invitation to judge. Hosts: This is not a bar show. This is a pageant. Please conduct yourself accordingly. Don’t try to be “funny” during on-stage question by jumping in and adding your two cents. People are already nervous, they don’t need you being a douchebag. Learn the contestants’ names and pronounce them correctly. Know who is who and treat them like contestants, not random people at a bar. Contestants: Never go into any pageant assuming that “you got this”. I guarantee you will be knocked down. Even if you are the only contestant, never assume. If your package isn’t up to snuff, I know some systems that will opt to just not crown anyone rather than have someone representing who brought a crappy package. Plus, if you go around telling people that you’re going to win, you’re going to look awfully foolish when you lose. Be considerate backstage. Not every venue has a ton of room. Be mindful of other people’s things, try not to step on stuff, knock stuff over, etc. Keep your partners/dressers/backup people in check. They should not be causing a ruckus. They should not be hovering around the judges or the DJ. They should not all be crowding around backstage. Your dresser is the only person who should be with you. If that person is also your partner, great. But if not, then your partner should be out in front watching with everyone else and not doing any of the things mentioned above. Your partner should also not be trash talking, bitching or whining, either during the pageant or after the fact. If you win, great. If not, don’t flap your gums about how this or that was rigged. Be professional. Always. If you are unable to maintain professionalism before, during and after the pageant, you should probably refrain from competing. And… don’t “borrow” concepts from other entertainers. Someone will recognise it, and it just looks really bad. Pageants can be fun and a great way to up your game and meet new people. But everyone involved needs to be professional and smart about what they do and how they do it. When pageants roll around all eyes are on you, regardless of whether you’re a judge, a promoter or a contestant.
Launching Arkansas LGBTQ Elders A Steering Committee has been formed committed to establishing a new organization called Arkansas LGBTQ Elders. The main goal of this group at the moment will be to morph into an Affiliate of SAGE (Service & Advocacy for Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender Elders) becoming SAGE Little Rock and part of SAGEnet. Currently there is no service and advocacy organization for LGBTQ seniors in this area and LGBTQ seniors are often isolated and lack of a place to socialize with other seniors. Other problems include attitudes from indifference to discrimination, and no easy way to find welcoming affordable housing, assisted living places, nursing homes, and medical assistance. These are some of the issues SAGE would help us address. They are the oldest and largest organization of its kind and offer their Affiliates considerable support and guidance. LGBT Elders are a vibrant and contributing part of our society with much to offer. but are in need of some help. For additional information visit facebook.com/Arkansas.LGBTQ.Elders and sageusa.org. More information about a first meeting will be coming soon. facebook.com/Arkansas.LGBTQ. http://sageusa.org/index.cfm
