YEP DREAMING BIG HERE!
H
ow do you feel about change? No, not the change in your pocket. The change that happens. The definition of change is to make the form, nature, content, future course, etc., of (something) different from what it is or from what it would be if left alone. We all know that change is inevitable. There is change that just happens with no regard to how we feel about it. And there is also change that we make for ourselves. I’ll admit that I love change. I will also admit that is a rarity. Would I prefer to be in the driver’s seat of that change? Heck yeah, but it does not always happen that way. However, I do my best to be the one in control of that change. These past two years, we have not been too much in control of what has happened. Those changes happened to be monumental, wouldn’t you say? 14

By Michelle Sukow We just had to figure it how to deal with it. We cannot always control what that change is going to be, but we can control how we respond to it. I tell my guys all the time, “Just wait 5 minutes. The phone will ring and the plan with change!” Am I not right?
Over the years, I have learned that you can either be the change maker or you must just go with what changes. In towing, we need more change makers! We can be the change needed for this industry or someone else will make the changes for us. That too is inevitable. A great example in this industry is the role women are making for themselves. We are not just answering phones and staying in the office anymore. There are strong women who want more. We are literally driving the change in this industry because more women are driving the trucks! More and more women are making the day-today decisions and owning their own companies. More

This year, hundreds of towing fleets across the country have joined thousands of fire and EMS departments, law enforcement agencies, DOTs, and other roadside operators on Safety Cloud. Together, these fleets delivered more than one billion driver alerts through the service, helping to reduce the risk of collision for operators nationwide. Many fleets took advantage of Safety Cloud integration options, which allow operators to activate Safety Cloud protection on existing telematics and fleet management platforms including Samsara, Webfleet, TOPS Dispatch, and more. HAAS Alert also continued work in bringing its digital alerts to more drivers and advocating for tow operator safety in the automotive industry. This fall, international automaker Stellantis, the company behind leading brands including Jeep, Chrysler, and Dodge, announced that it would begin testing Safety Cloud alerts directly in the infotainment systems of its newer vehicles. When You’re Doing It Wrong
I
haven’t lost one yet! I’ve been doing it this way for 20 years and haven’t had a problem! That’s the way I was taught! My boss has been doing it like this for a long time! Of all the phrases and sayings I hear regularly, those strike me the most as scary and ignorant. Tough language? Tough love? Sorry, not sorry. I guess I will keep preaching this lesson until I quit seeing all of these shortcuts out there on the highway and during recoveries. 22

My travels have given me the ability to see towing companies operate in just about every state in the union, except Alaska and Hawaii, mostly because I haven’t been to either state in over 30 years. Just about every day, I see a flatbed rolling down the highway with one chain on the rear of a vehicle. I see wheel lift trucks with no safety chains, no wheel straps, and no tow lights. I see heavy trucks towing loaded tractor-trailers without safety chains. I see driveshafts and axles still in place while in tow. I’ve been to truck dealerships where

a tractor was towed in from the rear and the only thing securing the steering wheel is the seatbelt looped in a simple fashion.
“experience”? If you’re violating every standard in the industry, as well as securement rules for the state and nation, is it “experience”?
I’ve issued this same challenge several times, and certainly during my seminars at tow shows: If you claim five, ten, or even 20 years’ worth of experience, but you are doing it wrong, is it really
Although I generally dislike analogies, if you claim to have 20 years’ experience as a carpenter, but the deck you just built looks like it was erected by a junior high school trades class, is it “experience”? I

even though I don’t like that method as a primary source of training, it’s better than nothing. Another factor I see in our industry is that the guys and girls taking shortcuts and doing things wrong usually talk the loudest about how good they are. Have you ever wondered why the people with the least amount of knowledge on a subject usually shout the loudest about them being experts? There is an actual psychological
For example, an amateur chess player with a few wins under their belt might enter a tournament and think they are much better than they are, only to be surprised when the masters and professionals at the game defeat them soundly. Just in case you wondered, that’s your ego talking, and not your common sense and rational, realistic thoughts. Back to the folks who claim “they haven’t lost one yet.” You will. And when you do, it’ll cost you more than you ever imagined. It’ll cost you your job, sure, but you can and will be named as a negligent party in a legal claim – a “separate civil litigant” - the tow company will be named, also, but they have an “out,” and rightly so. They trained you and documented the training. It was you who chose to take shortcuts out of laziness or lack of concern, and when all the pieces fall into place, the expert witness investigates, the lawyers write out their summaries, and a judge gets to rule on the case, you lose.
phenomenon that has been studied and named. The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias whereby people with limited knowledge or competence in a given intellectual or social domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain relative to objective criteria or to the performance of their peers or of people in general.
I’ve often said that I’d much rather have a 22-year-old guy or girl with good training, only six months of experience, and doesn’t take shortcuts tow my prized possession instead of some loudmouthed yayhoo who claims 20 years of experience but is doing it all wrong. If you truly can’t see the end result of an incident involving your shortcuts, I really can’t help you. You’ll have to just learn the hard way. And I guess I will keep preaching this lesson until I quit seeing all of these shortcuts out there on the highway and during recoveries.

INSIGHTFUL TALK BY DAN MESSINA ///
The Holiday Season I
was thinking about writing an article about the business side of towing, but because it’s the holiday season I want to talk about what towing means to me. I want to look at the positive things that I encountered in my 25 plus years in the towing industry: 1. Towing provided me a great lifestyle 2. It gave me relationships that will never end 3. It provided opportunities allowing me to grow my business Things to be thankful for: let’s start with all the towing media companies that support our industry. I had the
26
Tow Professional | Volume 10 • Issue 9
|
www.towprofessional.com
opportunity to write articles for American Towman Magazine, Tow Times magazine, and Tow Professional magazine. All of them allowed me to hold seminars at their tow shows and educate the industry on private property towing. Just to show you how successful my seminars were, I was holding a seminar at one of the shows. After the class 2 lawyers from Colorado came up to me and told me they wanted to learn about private property towing. I gave them a video I had made about private property towing and over the course of the next year they would call and I would answer their questions. A few years later a tow company in Dallas came to me and wanted to buy my company. I sold it to him
and he operated the business for the next 4 years very successfully. We were having lunch one day and he told me he was selling the company I sold him. Jokingly, I asked him who he talked into buying the company. He said it was crazy, he was sitting in his office one day and two lawyers from Colorado walked in and said they wanted to buy his company. He sold it to them and today it is still running strong. I have met people from the magazines that I have known for 25 years and will be friends forever. They gave me a platform that allowed me to meet many towers from all over the country. I never had children of my own, but 20 years ago I met a tower from Virginia that I adopted as my temporary son. We meet up once a year in Baltimore and I refer to him as son and he calls me pops. Recently I met a tower in Syracuse, New York that I now call my son as well. Let’s talk about the towers I have met over the years. When you do seminars all over the country you meet and build relationships with many towers. We partied together, we drank together, and more importantly we shared business ideas. When I started my latest company (TowTrax) I needed money so I reached out to big investors I had some big fish lined up when the epidemic hit. All my big investors went and hid. I decided to reach out to the people in the industry. In my first round we raised $250,000 and in my second round I raised over $700,000. I did it with people from the industry. It amazed me that I talked to towers in: 1. Oregon 2. Minnesota 3. Wisconsin 4. Pennsylvania 5. Michigan 6. Alabama www.towprofessional.com
7. 8.
Texas Ohio
These are people I never met, and they did not know me other than what they learned from googling Dan Messina. They all invested in TowTrax and I call on them when TowTrax needs to make major decisions. I flew to their locations to meet them personally. I remember going to Pennsylvania to meet with a potential investor. We stood behind his shop and I threw the ball to his dog while he asked questions. When we were done, he said to go in and tell Kim to write a check. If you would like information about investing call me. I don’t want to talk about my success. All these stories are a reflection of the industry I love. I know it’s hard and you feel like you would sell tomorrow if you could. But again, look back at what you have and all the rewards of the industry. There are resources that you can call to get you through anything. I tell my wife we are blessed at what we have and how we got there. I did not do it alone; I called on the industry. I’ll turn 74 in a few months, but I’m not done yet. Two years ago, I started TowTrax. A phone platform that provides tow companies with free tows. I have several thousand companies registered and receiving tows from TowTax. In less than a year we are doing a million two in revenue. Something’s I am looking to working on in the next few months are: 1. A tow academy – This will be the biggest challenge in the future. I talked to tow companies all over the country; they all have the same problem. We need drivers. I’m working with a tow company in Dallas that will provide a location with a training facility that will be perfect. I’m talking to |

the California Towing Association who has a training program that we could use to start. I’m missing two components, instructors, and students. I have some ideas but I could use your help with some ideas. 2. Cut Insurance – One major expense is getting insurance
for your company especially if you have an accident. I want to create a self-insurance program for our industry. Who knows more about what we need than the tow company itself. Imagine never worrying about getting insurance if you have an

accident. I had a friend in Dallas who had a major accident, the first one in over 20 years. It almost put her out of business getting insurance and I’m sure they are paying dearly for what they have. 3. Electric Cars – If the government has its way everyone will have an electric car. As an industry we will need training on how to tow these cars without damages or injuries. I’m working with a group that could get us what we need. Its my plan to work with the towing associations to offer this training. It’s a good class they can provide their members and make money for their association at the same time. I feel these are the three challenges of 2022 and I believe, as an industry, they can be overcome. As you look forward to Santa to see if he is bringing you a rotator, look back at what you have and be thankful. It’s all about the great people in the industry.

Fuel 4 Thought BY D.J. HARRINGTON CSP ///
Goals Map-Out Your Actions
W
ell, it’s here already! Out with the old and in with the new, right? I knew it was coming but so many things happened in 2021 that made me think planning for the 2022 would be my biggest challenge yet. Listening to the news these days, you’ll hear about doom and gloom everywhere. Covid still seems to raise its negative head with variants still in play. Many employees are losing their jobs for lack of proper protocol set by the government or employers while others are using this as an opportunity to branch out and become business owners. That’s not all. Everyone is experiencing higher prices on just about everything from staples to Christmas wish lists and others loot and burn as if it was their job. While pushing the grocery cart down the pet aisle yesterday, I noticed shelves were almost bare while the posted sign read, LIMIT TWO PLEASE,
30

|
www.towprofessional.com
and then later I noticed that my favorite salad at a national chicken place down the street had raised its price. They’re really forcing us to change our plans. I never thought in a million years that I would see things change so quickly. Unfortunately, it has. If you haven’t decided what you need to accomplish in 2022, it should be your IMMEDIATE goal today. So, set your mind in the right direction. When you think better, you’ll plan better. I’ve said it before, “Successful people plan.” Find your pad of paper and pen and let’s get started NOW. By now, successful people have probably already decided what their goals are. They plan early and maneuver or change their goals when appropriate. You might think you don’t have time to plan because you kind of know what you want to do. That’s not really a plan. Maybe things kept you from working on goals for the New Year. I get it, but it’s never too late to
start planning, especially when what you’ve planned to do doesn’t seem to be working. Problems or negative people within your business can distract you, but don’t let them side-track or stop you from planning and completing your business and personal goals. Maybe you wanted to add a new product or technique to your business. Put a pencil to it first. On your yellow pad of paper, make two columns, PROS and the CONS, listing all the benefits of the DO’s and DONT’s in those separate columns. If financing what you want to accomplish in the New Year is a problem, see what creative ways you can use to secure the financing. I’ve found that works very well for me. Word of warning though. Don’t let the plan you decide to implement be in control of your time. You are in control of your plan. After you decide what your goal is for 2022, divide it up into smaller parts. Adding a completion date to each of the things you want to accomplish is an important part of planning. Sometimes, a plan needs to be tweaked to make it work. So don’t overwhelm yourself in planning your goals for this year. Making a goal that is too large to complete in 2022 might need to be planned in stages and completed over 12-18 months or more. It’s your goal, so plan accordingly. Okay, back to dividing up goals into smaller pieces.
Smaller goals are easier to achieve each day, week, or month instead of trying to accomplish it quickly. Excessive stress can make you sick and kill any desire to complete your goals. Suppose for the moment that you were planning a trip from the East to West coast by car. Most certainly, the trip couldn’t be completed in one day, so you would divide up your trip by pre-planning your stops at certain cities across the country without pushing yourself every day. So, look at your 2022 goals as your trip to success. Map your actions and goals as if it’s a trip across country. If you’re implementing a new technique, get started by planning to meet with someone whose offering it. If you don’t start on your road to success, you’ll not accomplish what you wanted to by the end of the year. My friend, Les Brown, a renowned speaker, and author, said it best, “Your goals are the road maps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life.” Here’s what Tony Robbins says, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” Wonderful advice. So, make 2022 come to life by setting your goals and mapping your road to success. See you next time.

ynamic created the Original Self-Loading Wheel-Lift that has become the most sought-after technology in the towing industry. Benefiting for the families of our fallen
If each company in the industry gave just $5 when a tragedy occurs, we could generously support the families of our fallen in so many new ways. Can you give $5 when a tower dies? Help us support those left behind by the dangers of our profession.
The Survivor Fund The “Survivor Fund” was created in 2006 to complement the International Towing and Recovery Museum’s Wall of the Fallen. This fund was established to help those families who have lost a loved one in the line of service. GUNIWHEELTM
G
UNIWHEELTM is a compact solution to keep inside your towing compartment or neatly stacked on your tow bed. Each GUNIWHEELTM can hold up to 2,500lbs.- strong enough to install on all four-wheel hub locations. They can be driven at a max speed of 5mph and primarily to move vehicles on and off tow beds, drive on lots, and into body shops for vehicle repair. GUNIWHEELTM currently comes in four models: GUNIWHEELTM 45 is for most standard size vehicles with 4 & 5 lug patterns. GUNIWHEELTM 56 is for bigger trucks, vans, and large SUVs with 5 & 6 lug patterns. GUNIWHEELTM 80 (24” D X 3.5”) is for big 8 lug trucks and vans. Newest Product: GUNIWHEEL 45 S
We’re extremely excited to introduce to you our next generation GUNIWHEEL, the GUNIWHEEL45 S! The 45 S is a new and improved version of the awardwinning GUNIWHEEL 45. We have listened to feedback from the industry and made a stronger, more efficient shop wheel solution. The wheel fitment is the same. The 45 S fits most cars and small SUV vehicles, 4 or 5 lug patterns. We have greatly increased the offset of the wheel to a staggering 94mm, an increase from 51mm from the original model. With the new amount of offset, GUNIWHEELTM 45 S allows free rotation of the wheel on vehicles with large performance brake calipers without the need for a spacer, a needed upgrade for high-end sports performance vehicles. We also increased the strength around lug hole area by adding a 6mm metal plate to the back of the wheel. With the original 45, GUNIWASHERS were required to prevent over-torquing the lug nuts and damaging the wheel face. With the new backing plate and thicker steel, washers are recommended, but not required for installation. The 45S also comes with a two-year manufacturer’s warranty against any defects. With these new improvements the GUNIWHEELTM 45 S greatly outperforms the original 45 in high volume shop environments. For more information visit www.GUNIWHEEL.COM

TRU-HITCH
S
urvival in our changing transportation industry requires towers to work smarter and more efficiently. Today’s faster pace demands light weight equipment that can safely haul heavy loads at highway speeds while still meeting the scaling requirements of the state(s) you are operating within. A TruHitch fulfills this need. A Tru-Hitch Fifth Wheel Towing Device solves many of the traditional problems with heavy duty towing. • Tows Heavy Loads and Doesn’t Overload Drive AxlesThe Tru-Hitch booms are extended and then connected to the towed vehicle at a point behind the axle on the vehicle being lifted. This connection point places the axle being lifted in the middle of the effort being used to lift the truck for towing. Less effort is needed to lift heavy weight. Once lifted, the truck in tow is secured to the booms creating a rigid connection. The truck in tow simply becomes a semi-trailer. Weight transferred forward is properly imposed down onto the fifth wheel. This is how your tractor is designed to work and means no overloaded drive axles. Other fifth wheel attachments are attached in a fixed manner to the after frame of tractor they are mounted onto and use a traditional stinger to lift at the axle directly. The lifting effort is out at the end of the stinger. This means the rearmost drive axle sees most of the weight and in many cases becomes severely overloaded. • No Special Tractors or Modifications Needed – A Tru-Hitch can be connected to or disconnected from any tractor in just a few minutes. The Tru-Hitch is simply connected at the fifth wheel, and when transported uses a small set of integrated travel legs that rest on the after frame of the tractor. When disconnected, the Tru-Hitch is free standing, without the need for support arms etc., ready to back under the next time you need it. Because the Tru-Hitch properly places weight onto, and pivots at the fifth wheel when towing, there are no special mounting brackets, binders, or fixed mounting points needed. Also, because towing with a Tru-Hitch places weight properly onto the fifth wheel, there is no need to stretch the frame of the tractor in an effort to get weight forward off the rear axle. Nor does a Tru-hitch need to have additional lift axles added to safely lift tow. • No Lightened or Unsafe Steering when Towing- Because the load becomes a semi-trailer when using a Tru-Hitch, the steering axle of the towing tractor actually GAINS weight! Your tractor acts normally. This leads us to another important point. • No Uneven Braking – Because there are no overloaded drive axles and the steering axle stays properly planted to the road this means the brakes are evenly loaded. This keeps your driver, the load, and the people traveling near you safer. • There are no pinch points when towing with a Tru-Hitch – 58
Tow Professional | Volume 10 • Issue 9
|
www.towprofessional.com
Towed loads are secured to the Tru-Hitch booms and pivots at the fifth wheel. You can make turns at up to 90 degrees without worrying about pinch points. And just like a trailer, the load follows you around corners. Other under-lifts that pivot at the stinger mean maneuverability is limited. When you turn left the load wants to go right and vice versa. This is never an issue with a Tru-Hitch. • Cost- Traditional tow trucks are heavy, long, and expensive to operate. Other fifth wheel attachments require modified wheelbase tractors and complicated bracketry to mount and use. A Tru-Hitch comes complete, ready to attach to a standard tractor, with no special mounting requirements or additional cost. It can run on its own self-contained hydraulics, or connect it to a PTO, it’s your choice. Radio remote control and rigging items are included. A Tru-Hitch can lift up to 32,000 lbs. and tow up to a gross combined weight rating of 140,000 lbs. Tru-Hitch is the safest heavy duty towing solution for the heavy-duty tower. Visit www.truhitch.com for more information, or call 860379-7772 to order your Tru-Hitch today.
Speedbinders
S
peedbinders add efficiency, ergonomic advancement, and longevity to load securement and tie-down applications. We asked Joe Spelman, assistant product manager at The Crosby Group, how they do it. Trucking professionals are leveraging the advantages of the Speedbinders Torque Drive product line that has recently been added to the portfolio offered by The Crosby Group, a leading global manufacturer of lifting, rigging, and load securement hardware. US-based Speedbinders, a designer and manufacturer of pioneering load binders for heavy-duty load securement, was acquired by The Crosby Group this spring. The drilloperated Speedbinders not only provide faster tie-down and release times for drivers but also improve ergonomics and reduce strain injuries. The product is targeted at anyone who operates, services, and maintains trucks and trailers. A broad range of professionals in equipment rental, manufacturing, steel, haulage, recovery, and logging have already leveraged its benefits—and The Crosby Group will widen utilization much further. Solutions include the torque drive load binders, which use a portable power drill to secure loads, eliminating the need for repetitive, manual operations common with lever and ratchet binders. The product is available in three sizes:
• •
• 5/16”-3/8”: working load limit (WLL) = 6,600 lb. (for 5/16” G70 chain) 3/8”-1/2“: WLL = 9,200 lb. (for 3/8” G70 chain) 1/2”-5/8”: WLL = 13,000 lb. (for 1/2” G70 chain)
Joe Spelman, assistant product manager at The Crosby Group, said: “The Torque Drive technology enhances worker safety and improves productivity for drivers, it is a winning combination! The reasons to choose a Speedbinder over a regular binder are many and include the fact that they’re quicker and easier to use; they save time and money; and strain injuries are dramatically reduced. Speedbinders provide additional opportunities for our valued channel partners, and together, we are bringing this innovation to end users worldwide.”
Spill Diaper
W
ith the use of the SPILL DIAPER, secondary leaks are contained during your custody. Spill Diaper is a secondary confinement, absorbing 8 gallons or hydrocarbon (oil, gas, diesel), while containing material. The top layer is a general absorbent to absorb antifreeze; middle layer is an oil only absorbent, and the bottom layer is an impermeable backing to not allow fluids to leach through. With the use of SPILL DIAPER, you are not permitting foreign fluids from depositing along the highway, or to your facility. You
will be deducing the potential liabilities and preventing contamination to your storage facility, and or drop site. Per accident you will be compliant and turn your environmental liabilities into a profit, while the generators of the contamination compensate. Insurance companies have the obligation in their liability policy to pay for their insureds’ damage to property; being fluids leaking from their vehicle. Spill diaper could be applied to any vehicle leaking, or having the potential to leak. If a container, being a radiator or fuel tank, is damaged, it is not in factory position and has the potential to leak. This application is mitigation that is billable to the insured. Make it your company policy to not allow damaged or leaking vehicles onto your property without a secondary containment. Limit your liability from the accident scene, back to the drop site by not allowing fluids to drip and leak across the public way. Looking forward, keep your property as an asset vs a liability. Energy Security Agency The problem for tow and recovery professionals is you will interact with electric vehicles more and more. There are definite hazards and risks that you must be prepared to deal with to keep you and your staff safe from the dangers of damaged electrical systems, and the real possibility of thermal runaway after the incident is over. Stored energy is a real concert when dealing with damaged electric vehicles with high voltage systems. A quick Google search will produce dozens of articles about hybrid/ electric vehicles catching fire hours and days after an incident, even after the fire department has extinguished the flames. Several storage lots and buildings had catastrophic losses due to EV’s reigniting on property. Because of these risks, and the increasing frequency of tow operators interacting with electric and hybrid vehicles, new federal standards designed to protect people and property have been set forth by NTSB, NHTSA, NFPA, and SAE. They call on tow operators to seek guidance and have risk analysis conducted by third party experts. Compliance with these standards is crucial from both a safety and liability standpoint. If something goes south, you do not want to be holding the hat
of non-compliance when the courts and insurance companies start their investigations into what went wrong. Fortunately, the Energy Security Agency is here to help you stay safe and in compliance at no cost to you! In fact, if you enroll in our ESA Partner Program, we will pay you for each risk analysis we complete on the electric vehicles you tow. Our 24/7 response center is a phone call away to provide risk analysis of the vehicle and expert guidance on how to properly handle any electric vehicle you may come in contact. Risk analyses are easy to complete. Simply call the ESA at 1-855-ESA-SAFE and our trained Risk Agents will ask you questions about your vehicle, and any damage it sustained. They will then send you a link to upload photos of the vehicle right from your phone. The agent will assign a risk level of green, yellow, or red, and provide guidance on how to interact with the vehicle. To receive this free risk analysis and guidance service, tow operators need to go ESA’s website EnergySecurityAgency.com and sign up under the risk analysis section. Remember, there is no cost to you or your organization. .

Recovery Billing
T
he average towman is excellent at what he does best, and that’s towing and recovery. Billing can be complex and when starting out in business, it can be a challenge to design the right billing and invoicing systems to take advantage of the recovery work that’s being performed. Think about it. You could be losing thousands per month for unbilled services for what is essentially a clerical oversight. Bob and Eric bring their expertise to seminars throughout the year in Massachusetts and across the continent. Groups are small with only 20 towing companies per session, which makes for a more focused, one-on-one learning experience and higher success rates. We especially take care to help other businesses overcome the red tape and wall of legal babble that prevents towing companies from being paid. We will help you to navigate the legal roadblocks and red tape, helping you to get paid for your work without fail. All it takes is a robust system which you can apply to every job that you complete. EasTract North America
“T
owTract® is the most technologically advanced equipment for vehicle recovering, handling and towing.” It goes into low clearance parking decks/garages and other tight areas where vehicles may become disabled and physically carries them out. TowTract® is only the second robot from EasTract (an Italian company) to be operational in the United States and is taking the industry to the next level where Zero Traction is a must. This equipment makes getting vehicles out of tight areas and low clearance parking decks/garages with cramped space easier and will cut the time and physical effort required to get vehicles out of these areas. Prior to TOWTRACT® people had to endure the physical task of pushing the vehicles out risking physical injury & property damage. TOWTRACT® specializes in parking garages that are between 5 and 7 feet in height and also vehicles without keys or locked steering columns. It also has a track system that moves and a winch so it can go into muddy areas and pull vehicles out as well as carry cars from the side and lift motorcycles off the ground.
TOWTRACT® will also eliminate the need for an additional wrecker needed for the newer aluminum alloy frame vehicles which include Audi, BMW/Mini, Mercedes, Porsche, and VW Volvo. All of this because TOWTRACT® will pick up the vehicle and load it onto the truck and drive away after being strapped down. Parking facilities managers and property owners are thrilled with the very low liability risk exposure due to the reduction of RISK since TOWTRACT® will operate in a surgical manner as it operates and removes the vehicle out of the facility compared to bringing in a full-sized wrecker into a compact and tight area of the parking facility and risking damage to other vehicles with the boom. TOWTRACT® is unique, versatile and strong. It does tasks that have never been performed inside parking structures and cramped areas. This equipment has been in use several years by parking companies and property managers in Europe and is now available in Atlanta resolving these complicated issues with all the Atlanta parking lots and garages. The insurance industry says this equipment is a big game changer for the towing industry in Atlanta. Tow Atlanta is the only towing company in the state that offers enclosed towing services and provides Certified Consensual Towing Services to vehicles at the motorists’ requests. Tow Atlanta specializes in the towing of luxury, exotic, and antique vehicles and is the Official Manufacture Tow Provider for Audi, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Karma, McLaren, Lamborghini, Porsche, Rolls Royce and Tesla.

Tops/Budget GPS Lien Processing Simplified! The TOPS lien processing system is a step-based system that takes the headaches out of processing your company’s liens. No more looking at calendars and counting out days to know when to send notification letters, submit forms or set auction dates. The TOPS system manages the scheduling for you, freeing up your lien experts to focus on more important tasks. The TOPS lien system is set up to process YOUR liens and YOUR forms on YOUR schedule. We interview your subject matter experts and put their knowledge into your lien setup, so that nearly any employee can be cross-trained to process liens when needed. Your notification letters and forms are built into the TOPS system, and when printed become a permanent part of the call’s record. In addition, the letters can be searched for and re-processed or re-printed if necessary. The step-based batch processing creates your letters, forms, labels, and envelopes – whatever you need – so that your liens are always legal and compliant, and processed on time.
TOPS lien processing is designed to be done in ‘Batch’ mode – allowing you to process ALL of your notification letters and forms at once, saving you from having to manage them one-at-a-time. This helps eliminate errors and omissions, and requires very little of your staff’s time and effort. If needed, TOPS lien processing allows you to also process liens individually if there are exceptions, or if they require special consideration for any reason. TOPS lien processing is a fully integrated component of the TOPS inventory and impound management system, allowing you to view and manage the full life cycle of the impound beginning with the initial call and ending with the final lien sale. B
ig personal insurance companies spend billions each year on TV ads convincing people that price is all that matters when shopping for insurance. In the commercial world, that is horrible advice. Instead of shopping for the cheapest insurance, you should be shopping for the right insurance agent. Just like not all insurance is the same, not all agents are the same. Towing is a niche market for us because Hal Kresser, the agency principal, is very interested in the industry. He worked for a towing service when he was young and even today he is Wreckmaster Level II certified and can operate your equipment. Can your current
68
Tow Professional | Volume 10 • Issue 9
|
agent do that? Hal is also involved in the industry. He is an active, participating member of the Towing and Recovery Association of Ohio. In fact, he is so well respected that he was nominated and elected to be president of the local region and is currently serving his fifth term. Before he was an insurance agent he spent 20 years as a cop. He is certified in accident reconstruction and knows the laws and how to deal with police officers. He’s good to have as an advocate in some of the collision claims that happen when there are disputes as to fault and he can help you decide when to fight traffic tickets and violations and when not. For example, we had
www.towprofessional.com
one two years ago where a person on a bicycle rode into the side of a rollback that was making a right turn. The police officer listed the driver at fault for violating a crosswalk. After talking to the driver, Hal learned that the bike hit the truck by the back axel. That meant the truck was almost fully through the turn before being struck. That makes it the bicyclist’s fault. He contacted the traffic supervisor and discussed how the report was improperly written and explained why it was not the driver’s fault. The supervisor agreed and got the officer to re-write the report correctly. This saved the customer from having a chargeable accident on his record and saved the insurance company
from paying a personal injury claim. Claim adjustors are trained to take a police report as gospel. Unfortunately, not all crash reports are written correctly. Hal has the experience to know and can help when it happens to keep our clients from being unjustly charged with accidents. When you choose the right agent, he will be able to place you with an insurance carrier that best suits your needs. As an independent agent we have the ability to add new companies that enter the market. We have seen companies come into the towing market for a few years and then get back out. When that happens, you can lose your insurance through no fault of your own. A good agent is on top of that and can make transitioning to another carrier seamless. You need to build a relationship with your agent. He can help you decide when to file a claim or when to pay out of pocket. He can advise you on ways to keep your rates down as well as help you implement plans to avoid liability claims. We recommend things like putting cameras in the trucks to document crashes. They can be invaluable in situations where fault is in dispute. Choose the right agent and build the relationship on trust and integrity. The agent should be viewed as a stakeholder in your business. In a recent Google review of our agency, Tiffany Corey of John Wayne Towing wrote “even when we were told there was no hope by everyone else, they didn’t give up and kept pushing forward. I work for John Wayne Towing and we are a small company so something as major as insurance can really make or break a company. So, if you are needing insurance, I would highly recommend giving them a chance.” You need a good, well managed insurance portfolio
to help your business be successful and the agent needs your business to be successful to make his business successful. If you are contemplating any big expansion plans such as adding a new building or moving to a larger facility in another part of town, or adding more trucks you should involve your agent during the planning stage to find out in advance
what the impact on the insurance will be. Many times, I get the call to add something like a building, a second location, or a 50 ton rotator to the policy after the fact. Then the insured is upset when he sees how much it costs. Now it’s too late. To learn more call Hal Kresser today! 877-412-3434 or email him hal@kresseragency.com.

FINANCING FACTS
MUST KNOW’S BEFORE FINANCING By Jeremy Tsakiris – Alliance Funding
F
inding the right financing is so crucial in the towing industry especially during these challenging times. Often it can make or break the cash flow and profitability of the business. With so many companies and dealer financing options out there, the industry can be enmeshing and mind boggling for owners. To bring clarity for good decision making, I am highlighting key factors that I have learned through my twenty-one years of truck-financing experience that can help guide your choice of a finance partner.
Support Availability, Not Distancing It appears this world is trying to operate with minimal human contact. Though this may be helpful on the spread of infection, it is not helpful from a finance service-provider standpoint. Do yourself a favor and choose a partner that will answer the phone or will promptly call you back. When you are expanding your business or replacing needed trucks 72
Tow Professional | Volume 10 • Issue 9
|
www.towprofessional.com
which have gone down, you need a finance partner that is knowledgeable, efficient and, for sure, available. Helping you to navigate quickly through processing and titling, the right support will save you needless aggravation and help your business get where you are taking it. Combine this with a finance manager whose character and experience you can trust, and your mind will be at ease. We have received feedback from repeat customers whose have experienced this: “Jeremy is a stand-up guy and has been financing my equipment for more than seven years. I have never found anyone so willing to help the customer.” Mark Denson- Onsite Towing, Houston, Texas.
Direct Lender Over Broker Another key factor that I have experienced is to find a finance company like Alliance Funding that is a direct lender on the balance sheet as opposed to a broker. Although a broker can
finance companies that focus on the towing industry, will only file a lien on the title. They do not take advantage of the customer by burying the blanket lien language in the fine print.
Early Payoff Numbers at the Beginning In same context of “buried” info, note what the real prepayment or early payoff numbers look like at the beginning of your decision making. Be specific in your questions, so you can learn what all your financing options are. A good of example of options is leasing. Most of my customers prefer to do a lease purchase for tax benefits. However, in an early buyout situation, a small penalty on the “Principle Remaining Balance” is massively more beneficial than having to pay the whole remaining schedule.
Leasing’s Tax Advantage
be important for lower-credit scenarios, direct lenders can offer fast processing times, more competitive products by avoiding broker margins, and have the ability to structure the lowest rates, longest terms, and a balloon-payment structure. Our goal is not just a sale for you, but a lifetime of sales earned through excellent service: “Jeremy Tsakiris is the man. He hooked me up more than once and has definitely earned my business for life.” Trevor Sherrer –California
Collateral-Specific Financing Equipment finance should be specific to the collateral you want to fund. This may be a confusing statement, but what I have seen through my tenure is that many banks, credit unions, or other equipment finance and capital funding companies will file a blanket lien or incumbent on the business. Alliance Funding, along with a couple of other
As some of you may know, the tax advantage of a lease purchase program far exceeds that of a traditional loan. A lease purchase program is 100% tax deductible as an expense to the company. A traditional loan is considered an asset where a standard depreciation schedule is applied. This results in a fraction of the write-off to the business. A common misconception is that a lease-purchase program is more expensive. When, in fact, after factoring in the expense deduction, the result is most beneficial to the entity. The underwriting requirements do not differ whether I structure the agreement as a lease or a loan. Most financing companies, Alliance Funding included, can do either type of agreement. The lease purchase agreement allows for a longer balloon payment (i.e. 10-30% balloon payment). By doing this type of structure, you are simply allowing yourself more options when the term is over and giving yourself a lower monthly payment through the term. This will allow the business to have a quicker cash flow helping the monthly budget: “Jeremy from Alliance Funding, helps my customers to whom I sell trucks by structuring their agreements with a balloon payment which helps them meet their monthly budgets.” Ed Stroth, Sales, Twin City Wreckers In conclusion, financing equipment and trucks is a requirement for many businesses across this beautiful country. Finding a finance partner you can trust in challenging times or times of boom is crucial to the process. When that time comes, you need a partner who is not just knowledgeable and available, but who is also competitive and can approve the financing with your budget and needs in mind. We don’t just want you to survive during this time, we want you to thrive, so please contact us here at Alliance Financing by calling Jeremy Tsakiris at (603) 422-6608 or visiting us at our website at https://alliancefunding.com/ Stay safe, and God bless this great country!
