Saturday 5th September 2015. Anstey Nomads F.C. vs Friar Lane & Epworth F.C. A big welcome to all supporters, players, and officials for this afternoon’s F.A. Vase fixture. Here we are, the F.A. Vase. This is the competition that most managers at this step in the pyramid will refer to when they say they want a good cup run, it’s a very prestigious cup to be part of that over the years has produced some interesting games of football. The stakes couldn’t be higher for both sides today, a Leicestershire derby between two clubs with plenty of history and links to each other. If you want to read all about that history flip over just past the team line ups for a nice piece from our very own Ian Grogan. Many FLAE players have played at Davidsons Homes Park before, some under the Nomads banner and when all is said and done, we wish them luck in their league quest and will hope to see them again soon. For Nomads this day is twice as special as the Under21 side (by the time of reading) would have finished their first match and will hopefully bringing home some good news Whatever the result of the game it should be a great matchup and I hope Anstey and Friar Lane & Epworth fans alike will enjoy this one! Key Things to watch for: It is an important cup match so I’d wager that both teams would be willing to put everything on the line in order to advance to the next stage, expect a physical game, expect some risk taking and some mistakes being punished.

Positive performance from the Nomads Nomads were unfortunate to go home with only a single point from a game they played very well in. By Reece Preston-Hayes Nomads travelled to face unbeaten Ashby, who went top during the week due to Mickleover withdrawing from the league. It would be a tough match for the Nomads but if we could get a good start to the game, we might be able to cause some early trouble and put Ashby on the defensive. Humorously the Ashby Ivanhoe Fan Club chairman Mick Buckley predicted a rather ambitious 5-0 victory to Ashby, Nomads would be eager to show him we’re not a pushover. Nomads’ fielding a similar side to previous weeks, which is good to see. At the start of last year, if you can remember back that far, I had an interview with manager Rob Harris, who said that having a consistent team would be a good priority for him and it seems now as he enters his second year at the helm some of his wishes are coming true. Nomads started the game well, as I said we’d need to, early chances not leading to a goal just yet but certainly shown that we are a threat going up the pitch. Misfortune struck for the Nomads though as Ashby pushed through on a good attack, and came close to the goal, the ball gets plucked out in the air between the keeper and the striker. Both players collide causing the keeper to fall to floor, and after some treatment, the decision was made to take him off to avoid any negative effects to him. Humbly the keeper told the physio to apologise to lads, feeling he had let them down, but I think we can all confirm he did the opposite. Steve Armson took the gloves, with Joe Hartopp coming on as a sub. Nomads pushed forward straight after looking to avenge their fallen keeper in some way, Daz Taylor’s effort saved by the Ashby keeper and Simon Richmond’s follow up effort was cleared before it could reach it’s mark. Nomads continued their positive performance a lot of play in the middle with some fantastic passing, even when it looks like a bad pass the movement, desire, and skill of the Nomads seemed to keep possession for a very long time. Even the crosses and long balls were sweetly struck landing Nomads in some great positions to almost make 1-0. This is exactly what happen as a ball comes flying over from the middle and lands in front of Simon Richmond on the far side who fires it home at an impressive angle to put Nomads in the lead. Ashby did have some chances though, it was a physical game both sides not afraid to tackle one another, Ashby shots so far were dealt with by our sturdy defence or temporary keeper. Nomads seemed on top in terms of
possession and chances, a lot of wonderful deliveries into the box but credit to Ashby defence and their keeper for ensuring that Nomads didn’t gain a cushion. Ashby got their equaliser though, against the run of play. A free kick crossed in nicely and it looked like a lot of pushing and shoving, I’m pretty sure (biased warning) I saw an Ashby player go straight into the keeper as the other one simple puts the ball into the net with nobody to stand guard. Nomads had their own chance from a free kick Nick Reeves whipped one in that would have been perfect to header but this time Nomads were not in the right position. The curling free kick still flew across the path of goal with the keeper having to make a save. Joe Hartopp came close in a 1on1 chase with the keeper but the keeper’s head start ensures he gets there first. Ashby had a chance or two but it seemed mostly Nomads with a positive display as the teams go into the break. The second half could go either way, Nomads playing very positive up front but with a temporary keeper Ashby would be looking to capitalise. Nomads still kept attacking though, playing along the wings as well as the centre of the pitch. Substitution for Nomads as Stacy Coore who had been doing well controlling play in the middle bringing balls down and distributing it out, he is replaced by James Frost who’d look to perform a similar role but also be looking to cause additional trouble. Ashby came close to taking the lead as a cross came in that only needed a tap on the end of it but nobody could get there nose to it this time and it remains 1-1. Tiredness starting to settle in later in the second half, it was a physical match but a fast paced one so you can’t blame the lads for being a little worn out after all the running they have done. The final stages of the match was a typical tug of war with both sides having some good chances but the defences for both sides very much on form. Daryl Russell takes the cake for best defensive moment of the game, after an Ashby shot, Daryl uses his buns of steel, yes that is right his rear end, to block the shot. Nomads’ came close to taking the lead in similar fashion to the first half, Zak Harris playing a lovely ball to Simon Richmond out wide, who plays it in for Joe Hartopp who only just misses the target. Very fast-paced play for the Nomads and we almost took home all 3 points right there. It was a very entertaining game to watch, physical and fast paced, with plenty of chances. I think Nomads were unlucky to not take home all 3 points but Ashby could of took all the points as well so in the end both share 1 point each.
Bank holiday Blues for Nomads Nomads punished for slip-ups in a wet bank holiday fixture, losing 5-1 to Aylestone By Reece Preston-Hayes After a great performance on Saturday Nomads were on the road again as they faced yet another Leicestershire side, Aylestone Park. It was a cold and wet day, which meant it was going to be physical game; a mistake could cost you big time, whether the clouds foreshadowed the result or not, Nomads were going to be in for a tough day. The Nomads side remained largely the same as at Ashby with a couple of changes due to Bank Holiday vacationers. As the match gets under way it looked like Nomads were going to be playing with the same intensity as the last match, pushing forward early with strikes on goal. However Aylestone would ensure the day is dampened (there is many rain references in this report so put your overcoats on!) On the 5th minute they take the lead. Aylestone almost made it 2-0 soon after with a free kick lobbing over the wall and coming down towards goal like a dropped bomb, but the young keeper, who has put some solid performances in the last few weeks, stretches his arm up and knocks it over the bar. Simon Alexander pushed forward down the wing, and from a promising position, he fires a rocket of a shot towards goal, it had a slight curl destined for the top corner but at last moment, the Aylestone keeper punched it out for a corner. Nomads continued pushing forward, not wanting to be put down by a measly one goal difference in the match, Daz Taylor coming close from several one on ones, and some ambitious free kicks putting us in good position to equalise. Just when it seemed like Nomads fortunes were picking up and an equaliser was at the tipping point, Aylestone attack and a penalty is given by the Ref for a foul in the box. The Aylestone striker steps up to the plate, and then blasts the ball to the left corner of the goal, just pass the reach of the keeper and probably too fast to even react to anyway. With many free kicks given to both sides, probably due to the wet and slippery conditions, Nomads were lucky to not be punished for a fatal mistake, playing a free kick across the pitch to the empty field in our own half, Aylestone run on and were close to pushing ahead to 3. It was almost all Aylestone for the remaindered of the Half, a shot across goal came close to crossing line for Aylestone but it was cleared out at last. It wouldn’t take long for their assaults to pay off with a shot rebounding of the keeper and then falling into the lap of a seemingly offside player‌
But that’s no excuse for poor defending as the dominate home side march on at 3 and looking for more. In injury of the first half Nomads were preparing to defend a Aylestone free kick well within range of the goal, they didn’t get any chance to react though as the ball is struck sweetly and it swoops into the net making it 4 at the break. As the second half starts Nomads made all 3 subs at once, Stacy Coore, Chris Rudkin and Cameron Hardy coming off for Joe Hartopp, James Frost, Joe Harris. Nomads hoping the gamble would change things, maybe asking for a miracle in order to come back. It almost paid off early as pacey striker Joe Hartopp panics the keeper winning the ball first and playing the ball inside but nobody was up there waiting for him and the chance fades. More Mistakes for the Nomads made sure Aylestone would without a doubt be leaving the pitch with 3points and a goal injection to their GD, Aylestone capitalising on the sloppiness to make it 5. Nomads kept pushing with a couple chances but it was already too late, only one player in my opinion played a full 90 minutes of football, and although the keeper pulled of some nice saves it’s actually another one of youth development lads, Zak Harris. Throughout the game he kept chasing balls and in a tough game we need someone to be putting pressure on the assaulting team, Zak did this really well even putting pressure on their defence and keeper and could of walked away with a goal or assist. Goes to show that Nomads youth development over the past few years, and the partnership with Junior group Anstey Swifts does really make for some future stars. Nomads were given a chance to get a constellation goal late on when Joe Hartopp was brought down in the box, a penalty rewarded to the Nomads and Daz Taylor would be one to step up and he smashes the ball to the bottom left, a little too late for the Nomads but a well taken penalty non-the-less. 5-1 it ends on the dreary bank holiday Monday, we could never get our feet planted and get on the way with the Aylestone all over us throughout and fully deserving of the win. Nomads will have to look at their mistakes and fix them in time for Saturday that is our focus now, as Nomads will look to advance in the F.A. Vase. Full Report for both games available on the Nomads’ website www.pitchero.com/clubs/ansteynomadsfc
Around the Counties by Stan Wilton SATURDAY ACTION BORROWASH VICTORIA recorded their most emphatic win of the season, sending bottom club GREENWOOD MEADOWS back home still without a point to their name. Donimic Wilkinson started the ball rolling in the eleventh minute. He also scored the fifth and final goal five minutes from the end. Between times, Lee Fell on 34, Sean Fell on 53 and Carl Spencer on 80 added the goal which made it another miserable day for the Greens. But while things were getting worse for the visitors, the Vics were able to announce that they had installed a new Secretary and Manager immediately after the game. Leaving the League games aside for a moment, three of our sides were involved in the Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round stage, and whilst none of them went through, two of them did live to fight again. HOLWELL SPORTS fought out a creditable 0-0 draw at United Counties League side Kirby Muxloe, and one would expect them to start favourites to progress in Tuesday’s replay at Welby Road. SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC led from the early stages, Kyle Johnson having given them an eighth minute advantage over EvoStik Northern Premier League side Lincoln United. The visitors fought back though and Sean Wright earned them a replay with an 85th minute equaliser leaving Athletic with an uphill task in the replay on Tuesday. RADFORD, meanwhile, found Southern League Spalding United a little too strong for them and lost at Selhurst Street by the odd goal of three. Back to the League and HOLBROOK SPORTS are tonight’s leaders following the downfall of Mickleover Royals. However, they left it late to secure the points from their game at RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC. Ross Coxon broke the deadlock with just ten minutes remaining, and within a minute Isaac Minnot had doubled the advantage. ASHBY IVANHOE found visitors ANSTEY NOMADS a tough nut to crack and in the end had to settle for a point. Simon Richmond had given Nomads the lead on 18 minutes and Chris Waldrum levelled six minutes before the break. Neither side could break the deadlock in the second half. AYLESTONE PARK also had to settle for a point from their home encounter with KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE. Indeed, they had to come from behind twice in order to secure that point. Josh Stevenson put the Stags ahead after eight minutes, and the visitors held the lead until Adam Joinson restored parity 62 minutes later. Mitch Slawson put Kimberley back in front on 78 minutes, but a last minute penalty from Richard Lewis ensured that the points were finally shared. On a day when drawn games were the outstanding results, BARROW TOWN and ELLISTOWN & IBSTOCK UNITED shared two goals. George Himan put the home side in front inside the first ten minutes and Nathan Jones levelled on the hour. Following suit were GEDLING MINERS WELFARE and BLABY & WHETSTONE ATHLETIC. Felix Hogg putting the home side ahead on 26 minutes and Joeul Potter completing the scoring two minutes before half-time. STAPENHILL were not following the trend though, and ran out 4-0 winners over a GRAHAM STREET PRIMS side visiting Maple Grove thanks to a hat-trick from Lewis Campbell, who scored twice in the first half to add to Paul Furniss’s opener on twelve minutes.
BANK HOLIDAY ACTION ASHBY IVANHOE took advantage of HOLBROOK SPORTS game at SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC being off because the Lees Lane side are involved in an Emirates FA Cup replay to take over at the top of the table thanks to their narrow win at ELLISTOWN & IBSTOCK UNITED. They had to thank Daniel Quinn for getting them there. He scored both goals for Ivanhoe, the winner coming in the third minute of stoppage time. AYLESTONE PARK moved into the top three with the biggest win of the day. They tore open big gaps in visiting ANSTEY NOMADS defence with chief exploiter being Adam Johnson who opened the scoring and went on to help himself to a first half hat-trick. Rich Lewis added a 25th minute penalty to the 4-0 score at the break. Whether Park took their feet off the pedals in the second half, or the three half-time substitutes for Anstey stabilised a rocky ship if difficult to tell but the second half was certainly much more competitive. Daniel Gallagher added a fifth for the home side before Darren Taylor’s 79th minute penalty gave the visitors a consolation. The local derby between BLABY & WHETSTONE ATHLETIC and ST ANDREWS somehow ended goal-less although both sides will be kicking more than the ball for the number of chances they failed to take. Perhaps Aaron Preston’s clumsy touch nine minutes from the end deserved better than a goal kick, but it certainly was anything but a bore draw for the big crowd. The Battle of the Plains also ended in a draw. Patrick Samba had given visiting GEDLING MINERS WELFARE an eighth minute lead, and this looked like being the difference between the teams until Craig Meakin struck with seven minutes left to rescue a point for hosts ARNOLD TOWN. The Asterdale derby saw GRAHAM STREET PRIMS claim bragging rights over near neighbours BORROWASH VICTORIA with a 3-1 win. Sam Hawkins broke the deadlock four minutes before the interval, and Michael Fitzhugh doubled the lead in the 63rd minute for Prims. Anthony Rowley looked like making it a fighting finish when he reduced the deficit with just two minutes remaining, but Dean Oliver rattled in a third in the last minute to give Prims victory. Arash Abdollhai’s goal in the second minute of the game proved to be the one which separated the teams at the Stag Ground in favour of visiting RADFORD who hit winning form once again after their FA Cup exit last Saturday. KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE appear to have hit a goalscoring problem for they couldn’t break down the visitors defence. GREENWOOD MEADOWS are looking for their first point of the season despite an own goal in the twelth minute giving them the lead at home to RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC. The visitors hit back though and Liam Motson levelled midway through the first half and goals from Liam Smallwood and Jan Yeomans in the second period gave them victory. THE FA CUP REPLAYS There was joy for HOLWELL SPORTS and more cash to the club’s coffers thanks to Graham Wells 65th minute winner in their Emirates FA Cup replay against United Counties League Kirby Muxloe. It was the only goal of the game and enough to take Sports through to the First Qualifying Round. SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC put up a brave fight in their replay away to EvoStik Lincoln United but went down by the odd goal of three, all the goals coming in the first half. Shane Newton was the Shiners marksman.
A Brief history of the Anstey Nomads F.C. The Nomads were formed in 1947 and were champions of the Leicestershire Senior League in the seasons 1951-52 and 1953-54. The following season the Club recorded its’ highest ever attendance of 4,500 against the Athenian League side Hayes in the 2nd round of the FA Amateur Cup. But just one year later the Club decided to join the Central Alliance. In 1966-67 the East Midlands Regional League was formed, mainly from Clubs in the Central Alliance, and of the six seasons the Nomads spent in this League, they gained a top four place in three of them. In 1994-95 the Nomads created history by winning both the Leicestershire FA Senior Cup and the Junior Cup in the same season. In 2008-2009 season the Nomads had one of their most successful seasons by winning the Leicestershire Senior League, The Battle of Britain Cup, The Rollestone Charity Cup and The Beacon Bitter League Cup. Our first season in the EMCL 2009/2010 saw the Nomads finish bottom but our good reputation helped us not get relegated and we stayed in the EMCL Season 2011-12 Nomads were in the F.A Cup for the first time in our history The 13/14 season was a time of transition for the Nomads, with some struggle, we managed to remain in the EMCL. Nomads also had their first Under 18's Floodlit team; they had an impressive season with several players stepping up to our senior sides. 2014/15 Rob Harris became first team manager alongside former Manager Jimmy Withers; Nomads' continued in with Youth development with the Under18's floodlit side, and also will debuted a new Under 16's side. 2015/16 Rob and Jimmy look to continue the form the ended on last season and have a successful season after pulling Nomads out of transitional stage, Nomads will be fielding an U21s side instead of the Reserve side in an attempt to continue our youth development programme. We’ll also continue with an U18’s team for the 3rd year running.

A brief history of Friar Lane & Epworth F.C. In 2001/02, Friar Lane Old Boys were approached by Epworth FC as to the possibility of our 2 Clubs agreeing to a ground share. After numerous Meetings it was agreed that the 2 Clubs would ground share for 2 Seasons. This proposal was put to the Leicestershire Senior League and was thrown out by the League and Member Clubs at a stormy Meeting at Everards Headquarters, Leicester. So it was back to the drawing board, where the possibility of an amalgamation of the 2 Clubs was discussed and was agreed by Season 2003/04 when Epworth’s Manger Malc Coles and First Team players joined Friar Lane Old Boys and finished 3rd in the Premier Division and won the Battle of Britain Cup, while Epworth carried on in Division 1 and finished a creditable 3rd. 2004/05 saw the amalgamation take place and Friar Lane and Epworth Football Club was formed. The First Team finished 9th in the Leicestershire Senior League Premier Division and won the L&RCFA Senior Cup beating local rivals Kirby Muxloe FC 3-2 aet. The Reserves were Leicestershire Combination Division 2 Champions losing 1 game to Anstey Town Res and failing to score 100 League goals by 1. They also won the L&RCFA Saturday Shield beating Desford FC 2-1 aet. 2006/2007 was our first in the Midland Football Alliance and after some frantic phone calling and emails our Reserves were accepted into the Midland Football Combination Reserve Division. Under first team manager Clem Dublin our First Team managed a creditable 15th after a tough baptism and our Reserves with Manager Garry Palfrey had a good Season securing Runners-up 2 points behind Hinckley United. 2007/2008 saw Alan Brett take over as First Team Manager and we finished 16th in the Midland Football Alliance, reached the 3rd Round of the FA Vase and the Final of the Westerby Cup which was played at the Walkers Stadium in front of a crowd of 600, sadly we lost 3-0 but it was a good day out. Our Reserves finished a creditable 7th in The Midland Football Combination Reserve Division an amazing performance as 14 of the previous seasons team left just before the Season started and our Under 18 players stepped in and performed admirably. 2008/2009 saw Manager Alan Brett having to step down as Manger due to work commitments; his replacement Steve Orme who with Jay Jenders and Alan Ward as coaches formed the new Management Team. We again finished 15th which was an excellent performance considering our problems before Christmas. Our Reserves rejoined the Senior League in Division 1 where we finished 4th and reached the Final of The League Cup losing 3-2 to Premier Division Champions Anstey Nomads. 2009/2010 our 1st Team finished 15th and our Reserves managed 6th in what was a difficult Season for both sides due to movement of players. 2010/2011 With Steve Orme, Jay Jenders, Alan Ward & Jamie Sharpe with the First Team and Garry Palfrey with the Reserves we are looking forward to a new challenge and a successful Season. 2012/2013saw the first team pulled out of the midland alliance and dropped back in to division 1 of the senior league. 2013/2014 The lane have been trying to get out of the senior league and have missed out on promotion with a finish outside the top 5 to deny promotion. 2014/15 The lane move to a new direction and appoint former player Nick Brett as manager from Anstey Nomads but fail with the promotion with a sixth place finish but won the Beacon Bitter cup beating Earl Shilton in the final.

THE NOMADS & THE LANE Ian Grogan Anstey Nomads Anstey Nomads are delighted to welcome Friar Lane & Epworth to Davidsons Homes Park today. We have had some great tussles in the seventies & eighties where our two clubs were often competing for the Leicestershire Senior League Championship... The connections between the clubs started however before we even played each other. During the sixties we hosted the Junior cup final on Easter Tuesday with an 11am kick off. Our ground used to be packed to the rafters with crowds of 2,000 plus. I remember attending & watching the Lane playing some titanic matches against city rivals Hillcroft. Such a shame that many years later all the finals were switched to Holmes Park where the same atmosphere could never be the same. Our previous FA Vase game against the Lane took place 16 years ago where we progressed to round two after beating the Lane 2-0 in a replay after a goalless draw at Knighton Lane East. Our last competitive match took place in the first round of the challenge cup on 13th October 2009 when Lane ran out 3-1 winners. Many players over the years have donned both the Nomads & Lane shirts but what is remarkable today is that no fewer than Nine Lane players are exNomads! The connection being that the Lane are managed by ex-Nomads Manager Nick Brett. Bretty was very popular here with his wholehearted attitude both in football terms & in some interesting nights out! We wish Nick & the Lane well in the League this season & hope they are successful in their quest for promotion.
Match ball sponsor Nomads would like to thank loyal supporter Andrew for sponsoring the match ball for this important F.A. Vase match, for his kindness we have granted him full rights to shout as loud as he wants so watch out The Lane we have the best 12th man we could find!
