Monday 29th August 2016 Anstey Nomads F.C. vs Birstall United F.C. A big welcome today for EMCL newcomers Birstall United, it’s great to have another local rival in the East Midlands Counties League. Well let’s hope today’s game lasts a full 90 minutes, a torrential downpour and a lighting storm that blew out one of the floodlights caused Nomads Saturday match against Greenwood Meadows to be abandoned after 79 minutes with the score at 1-1. Meanwhile Birstall United hosted Radford who have been out of form since Nomads forced a draw out of them last week. All the goals of match between the Leicester and Nottingham clubs came in the second half, Birstall’s Jake Simmons got things started 2 minutes after the break. Radford equalised just under 10 minutes later and both teams continued to battle for dominance. Birstall nosed ahead again in the 75th via Lewis Dodd but Radford answered back immediately, both teams settled for the draw but will be looking forward to a re-meet later in the year. Anstey have had some good performances over the past week, a draw at Radford got our morale up before a big confidence boost that came from our big win against Ellistown & Ibstock United. We got our Saturday match of to a good start with much of the control in the first half being rewarded for our efforts with a goal to lead at half time. Greenwood Meadows who have had an up-turn in form recently answered Nomads back with heavy pressure leading to a goal in the middle of the second period, with a lightning storm looming over Cropston Road the game was abandoned, much to the dismay of the fans who wanted a conclusion to a great match. Focus returns to today’s match up both teams fairly even in terms of form, and both will hoping to pick up vital points to climb the table. It should be a great match so enjoy!

Torrential rain ruins great game! Lightning storm forces Anstey vs Greenwood to be abandoned. Written by Reece Preston-Hayes.
In the first of two fixtures over the long bank holiday weekend Nomads prepared to host Greenwood Meadows at Davidsons Homes Park, our second home game of the EMCL season. After a win in week against Ellistown & Ibstock, which produced 5 goals for our red and white army, Nomads would be looking to gain our first win at home this season. Travelling Greenwood Meadows, who finished bottom of the table last year, have had a recent uplift in form, they travelled out to Holbrook midweek and came out the clear victors after they walloped 7 goals into the net. It is certainly good to see a club that is as welcoming as Greenwood start to have a little success for all their efforts. Overcast sky as the game kicked off both teams battling early on but it seemed the hosts were having more chances, Nomads best chances were only just denied by Greenwoods keeper. Nomads almost broke through the keepers iron gloves as Joe Hartopp looked to add to his goal tally as it hopes to beat his record from last season, but this time the shot hitting the side netting. Much like our first goal at Ellistown our first goal in this game did eventually come after a scramble in the goal mouth, Zak Harris being the one to poke it in at the end (at-least that’s who I was told got it, can’t really see from the tea-bar while serving.) So Nomads went into the break a goal up but Greenwood were starting pile pressure on just before the whistle. Second half commencing and Greenwood came out the better team, piling on a lot of pressure against the hosting Nomads, we did our best to hold them off but chances kept on coming, a goal would eventually come 20 minutes or so into the second half. A headed effort after some nice quick passing play which ended with the sweeping cross that found its way onto their strikers head and keeping Greenwoods chances of taking a point home alive. Nomads started to wake up realising they’ve been napping far too much and both teams now fighting to take all the points. However there was one more player in this match that wanted to prevent the points being given in any which-way. I am ofcourse talking about the Lightning storm that had swept over, it had already blew on of the lights and things were being very dangerous out of the field. On the 79 th minute the Ref decided to call it and after some discussion the match was official abandoned, no word on if the game will stand at 1-1 or be voided so stay tuned! Abandoned at 79th minute due to torrential lightning storm. Nomads 1-1 Greenwood
AROUND THE COUNTIES By STAN WILTON –Saturday Games!
The top four teams in the table all secured excellent away wins. BARROW TOWN remain at the pinnacle following their 4-0 success at ARNOLD TOWN where Aiden Black gave them a 20th minute lead and Francis Finnemore doubled it just before the break. Goals in the last ten minutes from Ben Law and Luke Winfield completed the win. WEST BRIDGFORD went one better with a 6-0 win at bottom rungers ELLISTOWN & IBSTOCK UNITED. Tom Coole’s goal on half an hour broke the deadlock and was the only one of the first half. Five goals in the last fifteen minutes gave the final score a one-sided look. Jurgan Charlesworth started the avalanche, Ryan Plummer got into the act, Tom Coole scored his second of the game and Kevin Spriggs and Gareth Bentley completed the scoring in the last ten minutes. BORROWASH VICTORIA also scored four on their travels, but their win at RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC was not quite so easy. Jordan Kelly gave them the lead after just five minutes, but the teams went in at the break level thanks to Sam Adams’ goal right on the stroke of half time. Immediately upon the restart Scott James put the Vics back in front, and two goals in a minute from Dan Rowley and Brandon Gwinnutt put the Derby side well in control. Paul Durham reduced the deficit for Olympic on 58 minutes and Sam Adams second goal of the game two minutes before the end set up a grandstand finish. But the Vics held out to win 4-3. Goals were not nearly so hard to come by at HOLWELL SPORTS, and it was a late, late strike from Mason Brown, three minutes from the end, which saw visitors AYLESTONE PARK claim the points and remain one of three unbeaten teams in the league along with West Bridgford and Borrowash Victoria. The win saw Park climb to third in the table. Elsewhere, BELPER UNITED gained their first win of the season, and their first as a Step 6 club through Liam Oliver’s 77th minute goal in their home game with GEDLING MINERS WELFARE. And DUNKIRK claim a spot higher in the table thanks to their 3-2 home win over ASHBY IVANHOE. Ryan Baldwin put the Boatmen ahead, but within a short time Dan Quinn had levelled. Bruno Holden gave the home side their lead back midway through the second half and Sam Grouse made it 3-1 in the 88th minute. Royce Turville pulled one back right at the death but Dunkirk held on for the points. SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC edged a five goal thriller against BLABY & WHETSTONE ATHLETIC at Lees Lane. Luke Crosby put the Shiners in front after just ten minutes, but Rikki Bates had restored parity before the break. Tom Lewis fired Athletic back in front eight minutes into the second half, but the lead lasted just three minutes before Tom Hill squared things up for a second time. Crosby’s second of the game in the 73rd minute proved to be the winner. KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE enjoyed a 4-1 success over STAPENHILL at the Stag with Tom Dale, Adam Hassall and a brace from Alex Marshall, opening up a four goal advantage for the home side after the first half had finished goal-less. Steve Hart got a late consolation for Stapenhill to take his tally of goals to ten in just eight days, The other two games both ended in draws. At BIRSTALL UNITED, they shared the points with visiting RADFORD and four goals, all of which came in the second half. Jake Simmons put Birstall ahead two minutes after the interval, but Jean-Ruben Derosiers levelled nine minutes later. Lewis Dodd’s 75th minute goal which put the home side ahead for the second time in the game, lasted even less. Just one minute in fact before Conor Carter restored parity for the second time and ensured that the points would be shared. Not so many goals at GRAHAM STREET PRIMS but the same result in their game against HOLBROOK SPORTS, the Brookies needing to restore some credibility to their game following their heavy midweek defeat. Paul Fisher gave them a 38th minute lead but Jake Woods levelled eight minutes into the second half and that was how it finished. The game at Cropston Road between ANSTEY NOMADS and GREENWOOD MEADOWS was abandoned after 78 minuted due to thunder, lightning and torrential rain with the score at 1-1.

A Brief history of the Anstey Nomads F.C. The Anstey Nomads were formed in 1947 and were champions of the Leicestershire Senior League in the seasons 1951-52 and 1953-54. The following season the Club recorded its’ highest ever attendance of 4,500 against the Athenian League side Hayes in the 2nd round of the FA Amateur Cup. But just one year later the Club decided to join the Central Alliance. In 1966-67 the East Midlands Regional League was formed, mainly from Clubs in the Central Alliance, and of the six seasons the Nomads spent in this League, they gained a top four place in three of them. In 1971 Anstey Nomads were chosen to feature on Bartholomew’s Football map of England and Wales, our badge and information (albeit with incorrect founding date) is listed 5th between Andover and Arsenal! In 1994-95 the Nomads created history by winning both the Leicestershire FA Senior Cup and the Junior Cup in the same season. In 2008-2009 season the Nomads had one of their most successful seasons by winning the Leicestershire Senior League, The Battle of Britain Cup, The Rollestone Charity Cup and The Beacon Bitter League Cup. Our first season in the EMCL 2009/2010 saw the Nomads finish bottom but our good reputation helped us not get relegated and we stayed in the EMCL . Season 2011-12 Nomads were in the F.A Cup for the first time in our history The 13/14 season was a time of transition for the Nomads, with some struggle, we managed to remain in the EMCL. Nomads also had their first Under 18's Floodlit team; they had an impressive season with several players stepping up to our senior sides. 2014/15 Rob Harris became first team manager alongside former Manager Jimmy Withers; Nomads' continued in with Youth development with the Under18's floodlit side, and debuted a new Under 16's side. 2015/16 Rob & Jimmy lead Nomads first team to their best EMCL performance, our u18’s continued with our youth progression and a u21’s side provided further youth development. Club won Grounds award from EMCL. 2016/17 Ground overhauled with a fresh new setup for the clubhouse and surrounding buildings, the old changing rooms that we got 2nd hand in 1947 have finally gone and replaced with more modern rooms for players and officials.

A brief history of Birstall United FC Birstall United Football Club were formed in 1961. Initially playing Sunday football in the Leicester and District League where they enjoyed great success, taking three League championships and also the Leicestershire FA Sunday Intermediate Cup. After their Sunday success the club switched to Saturday football, joining the Leicester Mutual League. Again it is success all the way with Divisions 5, 4 and 3 being won in successive seasons while the Leicestershire FA Sunday Senior cup was also won while the club operated on both days of the weekend. 1972/73 proved a memorable campaign with the club winning the Leicester Mutual League Division One for the first time, a year later United repeated the feat and added the Leicester FA Junior Cup South by beating Qadby ‘67 by four goals to nil in the final. Birstall enjoyed a third Mutual League Championship in 1976 when the time came to make the logical progression up the ladder to the Leicestershire Senior league, Birstall being accepted into Division two for the 1976/77 season. Birstall enjoyed two thrilling battles with Hillcroft for supremacy in their initial senior league campaign, finishing top of the league by a single point with Hillcroft second and adding the Tebbutt Brown Cup with a 3-0 win in the replayed final after the two clubs had drawn the initial match 1-1. Thus 1977 saw Birstall in the top flight of the Senior League where they have remained to this day. So far Birstall have not won the Senior League Championship, nevertheless, have usually been amongst the leading clubs. Their best season being 1981/82 when they finished as runner-up to Anstey Nomads, but did have some consolation by beating Nomads 1-0 in the Tebbutt Brown Cup Final. Twelve months later and another final for Birstall, this time it was the Leicestershire FA Senior cup when the lost to Hinckley Athletic by two clear goals. The 1984/85 campaign saw the Tebbutt Brown Cup won for the third time with Anstey Nomads again being beaten in the final this time the score line was 3-2. Two seasons later and the final of the Leicestershire FA Cup was reached only for Birstall to go down 1-4 to the now defunct Leicester United. A forth Tebbutt Brown cup final came Birstall’s way in the 1988/89 season but this time the silverware went to Stapenhill who won the match 4-0, Birstall lost 2-1 after extra time in the Senior Cup Final to Friar Lane. 1994 saw Birstall win the first Beacon Bitter floodlight cup. Birstall finally won the Senior Cup beating Oadby Town 1-0 in 1996. In 1998 at the beginning of the season the club won the Battle of Britton Charity Cup beating Oadby Town 1-0 in the final. At the end of the season Birstall beat Ibstock Welfare in a penalty shoot out to regain the Senior Cup, and completed the treble the year after beating Oadby after penalties. The turn of the century saw the club go through mixed fortunes both on and off the field. Although the 2 nd team regularly competed for honours, the first team struggled to keep track on the leading clubs and if truth be told, the standard of the ground and club facilities declined. In 2010 however, the club was taken over by a group of members who transformed the inside of our dated clubhouse and gave us a venue to be proud of again. In 2012 the club applied for, and successfully accrued funding from the Olympic legacy fund which kick started our ambitions to bring the club back to life. Improvements on the ground started with new changing facilities, followed by re- rendering of the club, hard standing around the pitch and a 54 seater stand. During the past four years the committee have embraced the challenge of rebuilding our club, which in turn produced a massive upturn in the fortunes of the club on the field. Old stalwarts came back, recognising the efforts that had been made to improve the facilities and after narrowly missing out on promotion in 2015, the club finally achieved promotion to the East Midland counties league last season. This was achieved by winning the Everards Brewery senior league. A feat we are all very proud of. Now in our 5th decade of being the largest football club in the village, the committee are relishing this new challenge that stands before us and look forward to the next 50 years.

It is with regret that we withdraw from the Under 18 Leicestershire Midweek Floodlit Youth league. We have had many enjoyable times with our youth development teams this past few years and we have seen the likes of Sam Marshall, Zak Harris, Miles Price, and many more talented youngsters have come through our ranks. We hope in nearby future that the stars will align and we’ll be able to support a youth side with sufficient managers and coaches.
Programme Sponsors Needed! The Nomads are in need of new programme sponsors for the coming season, we are looking for full page, half page, and even quarter pages at very affordable rates. If you are interested in advertising your business in this seasons programme then please talk to Reece and Helen in the Tea-Bar.
Seat Sponsors Needed!! This year we are renewing the seat sponsorship scheme, as you know a few years ago we purchased new seating, to cover the costs of this we had our loyal fans sponsor a chair in their name, on behalf of a family member, or on behalf of a local business. This time around we are trying to raise funds to cover some of the hard work that has gone into ground development, please see Reece to sign your name up to the list, if you already sponsored before you have first priority to re-sponsor. It is only ÂŁ5 per seat so get your name down at your local club, fantastic!

AROUND THE COUNTIES By STAN WILTON – Midweek Games! Six games on Tuesday evening brought forth 38 goals as our clubs went on a goalscoring spree that should see spectators happy. Ten were scored at Maple Grove where STAPENHILL beat visiting HOLWELL SPORTS 7-3 with Steve Hart once again confirming himself as the League’s top scorer. He followed his opening-day salvo of five goals with another four in this game and sparked off a run of six goals in fourteen minutes. Lewis Campbell had given Stapenhill a tenth minute lead, and this was followed by Steve Hart’s first two minutes later and one from Niall Dawkins on 16 minutes which gave the home side a comfortable three goal early advantage which they retained until the interval. Kieran Foster pulled one back for Holwell immediately on the restart and life remained at 3-1 until the 63rd minute. Hart got his second followed within seconds by Foster’s second. Then Chris Hibbitt nipped in on 67 minutes to pull the score back to 4-3. Within three minutes though Hart had scored twice more to take his personal tally to four for the game, and on 77 minutes Tom Liversage had made it 7-3 to end a remarkable scoring spree. The win took Stapenhill up to second in the table. BARROW TOWN dropped their first points of the season at AYLESTONE PARK, who remain unbeaten following their 2-1 win. Zak Ginvert put the Riversiders ahead on 39 minutes, but Mason Brown restored parity two minutes into the second half. Substitute Sam Carline bagged the winner for Park on the hour. Biggest win of the day came at ASHBY IVANHOE who thrashed GRAHAM STREET PRIMS for six goals without reply. Danny Quinn led the way with a hat-trick and the other goals came from Jack Ryder, Royce Turville and Luke Thorogood. There was a big win for ANSTEY NOMADS on the road as well as they beat ELLISTOWN & IBSTOCK UNITED 5-1. Jon Armson got the only goal of the first half for Nomads in the 22nd minute, and Nick Reeves doubled the lead seven minutes into the second half. Lee Hillier got one back for United on 62, but a brace from Joe Hartopp and one from substitute Ash Akiens gave Nomads their biggest win of the season and keeps Ellistown rooted to the foot of the table. BELPER UNITED got their first point of the season in an eight-goal thriller with fellow newcomers WEST BRIDGFORD. Sam Vickers opened the scoring in the tenth minute and Albashir Kuri made it two just a couple of minutes later. Patrick Newsome split the deficit on 22 but Dean Oliver re-opened the two-goal gap just three minutes later. Jake Richardson and Tom Coole restored parity to the occasion before the break and the teams went in at 3-3. Sam Vickers pointed United on the way to what would have been their first three points of the season on the hour, but Tom Coole’s second goal of the game on 70 minutes left West Bridgford still unbeaten and Belper United still looking for their first win, but United will feel that things are starting to come together for them after this game. RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC enjoyed another three point haul with a 4-1 rout of much fancied RADFORD at the Recreation Ground. Ryan Smith led the way for Olympic with a hat-trick and Jake Morris hit their fourth. Substitute Conor Carter’s 52 minute goal was as much as Radford could muster in this game. If Tuesday evening’s games brought sensational scoring, Wednesday evening’s lone game probably went one – or even two – better. What a way to gain your first points of the season and record the club’s biggest away win ever in the East Midlands Counties League? A few eyebrows would be raised at the result of HOLBROOK SPORTS 1 GREENWOOD MEADOWS 7. Errol Campbell started the ball rolling towards the net for the Greens on six minutes, followed by a second from Jordan Alls 16 minutes later. Scott MacKenzie pulled one back for Holbrook on half an hour but the two-goal gap had been reopened within two minutes when Campbell scored his second of the game. Two goals from Jay Smedley and one each from Kieran Kenton-Bradshaw and Jim Hunter made it a celebration evening for the Lenton Lane side and caused Holbrook to go back to the drawing board.
