Saturday 12th November 2016 Anstey Nomads F.C. vs Ellistown & Ibstock United F.C. A very warm welcome to today’s EMCL Fixture between two local rivals, this weekend is remembrance weekend and we hope to honour all our heroes present and past who have fought for our freedoms. As it is famously known during WW1 there was a temporary truce between rival forces as they celebrated Christmas, this included none other than a the world’s most beautiful game, FOOTBALL! To me that has always demonstrated the true power of sports to bring people together in friendly competition. Football is a game for all to be enjoyed by all, no matter what your differences everyone can get involved in some shape or form, that’s something that I think we should always celebrate, even when people try to tarnish the sport with fighting and disruptions, corruption at the top and other trivial matters. Football in its simplest form will still manage to unite people from all backgrounds. I hope you enjoyed that little piece now onto the information about today’s teams! Visiting Ellistown & Ibstock United (EIU from here on-out) have had a troubled season so far, just one point to their name thanks to a draw late in September vs Dunkirk. Since then the EIU have tried their best to gain momentum but a tough run of results leave them at the bottom of the table. On the positive side EIU managed a win in the L&R CFA Challenge Cup, although we’re not too sure how they qualified ahead of other higher placed teams they did prove they deserve their place after taking Birstall United all the way to penalties and coming out on top by the odd goal of 5. Nomads have had an upturn in results a win against Dunkirk on Saturday was secured by a late penalty and with two draws in the preceding games that had us push harder than we have all season it’s certainly come at the right time with Nomads celebrating their win with a huge fireworks display (that would of gone ahead regardless of the result!)

Late penalty makes Nomads DAY. by Reece Preston-Hayes. Nomads win in a hard fought match at Dunkirk via a late penalty, 2-1. On the back of two hard earned draws Nomads would travel to Dunkirk hoping for a similar or better result if luck would allow, hosting Dunkirk had beaten Nomads earlier in the season by 3 goals to 1. A chill in the wind but the sun still out as we venture into November and the game gets on the way, both teams eager to snatch an early goal. In goal ready to stop Dunkirk from gaining a quick lead Steven Armson stepped up after Miles Price was unable to start. Nomads passing was coming together nicely as we play the ball out wide to Ash Day who returns to the club, some last year criticised Ash for hogging the ball on occasion but his first foray lead to a wonderful cross, met well by Daryl Russell who was centre forward today instead of his usual wing back or centre back roles. Another chance came from Nomads striker (who is native to the position,) Mark Foster, who knocks the ball on for himself running towards to box but a well-timed challenge from the Dunkirk Defender gave Nomads a corner. A short 1-2 from the corner to trick the defenders but the keeper wasn’t fooled when the ball was delivered, Nomads fell on the clearance but a wayward long shot ended one threat but after a poor kick from the keeper Nomad shad one more go at goal but it remained goalless. Nomads continued their assault with their best chance coming from a Free Kick, Chris Rudkin took a nice curling shot a goal but beaten by the keeper. The first goal would come eventually but it was the hosts that took the lead, slipping through the defence to go one on one with Steve, it goes through his legs but Steve tried to dive back but to not avail. Ten minutes remained in the first period as Nomads tried to claw back the equaliser, our best chances through the air but Dunkirk’s keeper kept them firmly in the lead as the first half concluded. After the break, Nomads would come out the gates quick and wasting no time with a couple of early chances still being denied by the keeper. A ball over the top and Nomads strikeforce being aided by another ‘wannabe’ striker, Jon Armson, who’s header slipped past the keeper meant it was all square. Not so long after Mark Foster looked to double the leader but getting as far as the box before a defender muscled him out of possession. Dunkirk tried to regain the lead but Nomads were defending well, a lot of fouls conceded against both sides as the game looms on. Late in the game Nomads have played very well against the tough Dunkirk, we would probably take a draw. We kept pushing and pushing and that’s why we deserved to win, a later surge for Nomads had the Noisy Nomads on the edge of their seats, (actually we’d had started walking around to where the players exit to applaud them.) A bit of luck coming Nomads way as we push through to the box via Mark Foster and a late challenge brings the young striker down. After a deliberation between Nick Reeves and Ash Day it was decided Ash would step up in a bid to secure his place back in the Nomads side on a long term basis. He hit the ball to his right and the keeper had reached it but only by his fingertips meaning the ball continued passed the line and Nomads had a 90th minute winner!!! After the match the entertainment continued, as Noisy Nomads applauded both sides off the pitch after a fantastically entertaining match, the Dunkirk keeper decided to throw water and therefore any respect he had earned over one of the travelling supporters, and here we thought it was a senior sport?! Fulltime: Dunkirk FC 1-2 Anstey Nomads
AROUND THE COUNTIES By STAN WILTON – Saturday Showdowns!
SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC took advantage of their rivals dropping points to move three points clear at the top of the table after beating BARROW TOWN at Lees Lane 4-0. Kenny McEvoy opened the scoring in the 17th minute, and Luke Crosby added a second with a twice taken penalty on the half hour mark. Crosby and Warren Hatfield added further goals in the last seven minutes to keep the Shiners in pole position. Second place still belongs to RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC who dropped vital points in their top-of-the-table clash with third placed STAPENHILL. Steve Hart broke the deadlock for the visitors after 22 minutes, but goals from Conor Moore (35) and Ian Marley on the stroke of half-time sent Olympic in at the break in pole position. Within moments of the start of the second half Steve Hart had levelled things up again and Lewis Campbell put Stapenhill ahead for the second time in the game within another two minutes. Marley’s second of the game for Olympic on 72 meant the teams shared the spoils in an exhilarating game. And whilst there two were slogging it out at the Recreation Ground, AYLESTONE PARK were finding things tough as well at the much improved GREENWOOD MEADOWS. Although Mason Brown gave them the lead after 40 minutes, Aaron Mitchell had levelled for the Greens before the interval. Jordan Alls then put the Lenton Lane side in front with eleven minutes left only for Jack Jepson to salvage a point for Park with two minutes of the game left. RADFORD kept up the challenge on the leading pack with a 4-0 win at ELLISTOWN & IBSTOCK UNITED, but it wasn’t until late in the game that they were able to consolidate the three points. Jeavon Seaton’s 37th minute goal was all that separated the sides until twenty minutes from the end when Ken Reeves and a brace from Conor Carter put some icing on the cake. ANSTEY NOMADS returned to winning form with a 2-1 win at DUNKIRK but had to come from behind to do it. Bruno Holden had given the Boatman an interval advantage with his 29th minute goal only for Jon Armson to level three minutes into the second period. Ash Day, who had rejoined his brother Luke (from Blaby today) at the club, scored the last minute penalty which took the “Noisy Nomads” four points clear of the relegation zone after GEDLING MINERS WELFARE lost 3-2 at GRAHAM STREET PRIMS and BELPER UNITED went down to landords BORROWASH VICTORIA in their home game on Friday evening. Gedling might have been expected to do better on their trip to Prims after going two goals in front through Callum Gilmartin and Jack Hopper inside the first twelve minutes. And they looked like holding their lead until Sam Groves pulled one back on the hour and Lee Sutton restored parity from the penalty spot with fifteen minutes left. Tom Rushby got Prims all important winner with ten minutes left to leave the visitors still struggling inside the drop zone. Idris Kabongo was responsible for putting Borrowash Victoria in front in the Friday evening game just after the half hour. Declan Taggart levelled things up two minutes into the second half but substitute Joe Plant got an 88th minute winner for the Vics to leave United four points adrift in the bottom three. The recent improved form shown by ARNOLD TOWN took a dive when Craig Black scored after eight minutes for visiting HOLBROOK SPORTS, and the Brookies held on to this valuable lead for all three points. One goal also settled the game at BIRSTALL UNITED, where Mitch Williams found the net on 65 minutes to give them the points against ASHBY IVANHOE. Three second half goals gave BLABY & WHETSTONE ATHLETIC what seemed like a comfortable victory over visitors HOLWELL SPORTS. James Ireland opened the scoring in the first minute of the second half, and just around the hour mark a brace of goals from Dan Henfrey clinched all three points. WEST BRIDGFORD and KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE could not be separated in their Nottingham derby. Patrick Newsome gave the home side first blood after 14 minutes and Greg Simmons levelled seven minutes before the break. Neither side could find the net in the second half and so the points were shared.

A Brief history of the Anstey Nomads F.C. The Anstey Nomads were formed in 1947 and were champions of the Leicestershire Senior League in the seasons 1951-52 and 1953-54. The following season the Club recorded its’ highest ever attendance of 4,500 against the Athenian League side Hayes in the 2nd round of the FA Amateur Cup. But just one year later the Club decided to join the Central Alliance. In 1966-67 the East Midlands Regional League was formed, mainly from Clubs in the Central Alliance, and of the six seasons the Nomads spent in this League, they gained a top four place in three of them. In 1971 Anstey Nomads were chosen to feature on Bartholomew’s Football map of England and Wales, our badge and information (albeit with incorrect founding date) is listed 5th between Andover and Arsenal! In 1994-95 the Nomads created history by winning both the Leicestershire FA Senior Cup and the Junior Cup in the same season. In 2008-2009 season the Nomads had one of their most successful seasons by winning the Leicestershire Senior League, The Battle of Britain Cup, The Rollestone Charity Cup and The Beacon Bitter League Cup. Our first season in the EMCL 2009/2010 saw the Nomads finish bottom but our good reputation helped us not get relegated and we stayed in the EMCL . Season 2011-12 Nomads were in the F.A Cup for the first time in our history The 13/14 season was a time of transition for the Nomads, with some struggle, we managed to remain in the EMCL. Nomads also had their first Under 18's Floodlit team; they had an impressive season with several players stepping up to our senior sides. 2014/15 Rob Harris became first team manager alongside former Manager Jimmy Withers; Nomads' continued in with Youth development with the Under18's floodlit side, and debuted a new Under 16's side. 2015/16 Rob & Jimmy lead Nomads first team to their best EMCL performance, our u18’s continued with our youth progression and a u21’s side provided further youth development. Club won Grounds award from EMCL. 2016/17 Ground overhauled with a fresh new setup for the clubhouse and surrounding buildings, the old changing rooms that we got 2nd hand in 1947 have finally gone and replaced with more modern rooms for players and officials.

A brief history of Ellistown & Ibstock United FC Ellistown & Ibstock FC were formed in July 2014 following a merger between Ibstock United and Ellistown FC and are now entering their fourth season. The clubs first season being the most successful in either of the founding club’s history, finishing in third place of the East Midlands Counties League, qualifying for the FA Cup, FA Vase and Westerby Cup and also booking a place in the final of the Coalville Charity Cup. The Club play their games in the East Midlands Counties League at Terrace Road.
A passing of a former Nomad player, and later manager I was recently contact via email from a former Nomads goalkeeper David Hankey, who when with the Nomads was part of the team that got us promoted from Division 2 of the Leicestershire Senior League in 1973/74. David was writing to inform me that the manager during his spell with the club, John Perkins, a great servant of Anstey Nomads Football Club, passed away recently. A service was held at South Leicestershire Crematorium, Countesthorpe on Nov 2nd. John was known to had been a fine player during his time and after his playing career he took up the post of manager for Anstey Nomads during the 70’s and as mentioned above took the Nomads back to the top flight of the Senior league, also during the 73/74 season Nomads played in the very last season of the FA Amateur Cup before the competition was renamed; the FA Vase. David Hankey recalls Anstey Nomads getting to the last but one Qualifying Rounds managing a magnificent draw away at Preswich Heys in Manchester before being knocked out in the relay 2-3 at Cropston Road. David himself went on with spells at Oadby Town, Great Bowden Imperial and Houghton Rangers before leaving the Senior League circuit joining my local Club in Great Glen before "retiring" in 1990 at the ripe old age of 40!! He told me that his time at Anstey were probably the most thoroughly enjoyable with a great bunch of lads and fantastic managers, George Siddon, and superb set up - halcyon days indeed. It’s certainly good to hear from old players who still remember the club for the same community values we stick to even to this day.

AROUND THE COUNTIES By STAN WILTON – Midweek Matches!
The first disruption to the football season by the weather occurred on Wednesday evening when snow put off the Derbyshire FA Senior Cup Second Round tie at Central Midlands League Tideswell United where BORROWASH VICTORIA were due to be the visitors. In the other game in this competition SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC progressed to the Third Round, where the “big guns” come in, with an emphatic 5-1 success at Staffordshire County League side Ashbourne FC, who groundshare at Midland League club Rocester. Two goals to the good at the break, the Shiners goals were shared between, Kenny McEvoy, Courtney Bartley, Luke Crosby and a brace from Lee Fell. There was an abundance of goals in the two ties played under the Nottinghamshire FA Senior Cup heading as well. WEST BRIDGFORD easily progress against fellow East Midlands Counties League side GEDLING MINERS WELFARE by 6-1. Gedling are having a traumatic season by their high standards and were already six goals in arrears by the time Jack Hopper pulled back their consolation strike in the 57th minute. Aaron Large helped himself to a West Bridgford hat trick, opening the scoring in the 24th minute and bagging two more in the first six minutes of the second half. Carl Westcarr, Aboubacar Sylla and Akindomide Jalyeola got the other goals. Plenty to shout about at Eagle Valley as well where ARNOLD TOWN returned to winning ways with a 3-2 win over RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC to progress to the Third Round. Joe Butler opened the scoring after eight minutes, Jack Millward added a second on 17 and Kaylum Mitchell made it 3-0 for the Eagles just 24 minutes in. Radcliffe staged a second half fight back when Conor Moore scored on the hour and Matt Fowler closed the gap even further on 73 minutes, but they couldn’t take the game to extra time. In the Jenkins & Jenkins League Cup Second Round DUNKIRK left it late to make progress against GRAHAM STREET PRIMS. Steve Dennahy put the Derby side ahead after twenty minutes only for Solomon Miller to level ten minutes later. And that was how it stayed until late in the game with extra time looking inevitable until Myles Gorey put the Boatmen back in front with eight minutes left. Chris Spencer added a third on 86 minutes and Bruno Holden made it 4-1 in the last minute.
