Anstey Nomads vs Holwell Sports 08/10/16

Page 1

Saturday 8th October 2016 Anstey Nomads F.C. vs Holwell Sports F.C. A very warm welcome to all as Nomads face off against Holwell Sports. It’s been a mixed couple of weeks for Nomads, we did manage to get our first home win of the season during the L&R CFA Jelson Cup in which we hosted and bested Blaby & Whetstone Reserves by 3 goals to 1. Last Saturday our Nomads travelled to face Blaby’s first XI, it was a closely contested match-up, it really could of gone either way but the hosting side one over by a slim 2-1 margin, Nomads goal coming from Joe Hartopp, full report featured in this programme! Another piece of midweek misery for Nomads dampens spirits once again, this week’s long Journey was to Holbrook Sports who toppled our tired travelling team. Holwell have not had much luck either, 3 league losses on the bounce. Both fixtures from Saturday and Tuesday were closely competed but Birstall United and South Normanton both beat Holwell by a single goal to nil. A victory in the Vase against Clifton All Whites was also close, Holwell lead the way at half time but Clifton’s second half equaliser forced extra time but Holwell sealed the deal to put them through to next round. Anstey Nomads will be looking for their first home league win, it is much needed to turn the season around, Holwell also could do with an injection of points if they hope to climb the table. Every game is important but both teams need to pick up some points sooner rather than later, at least our Noisy Nomads lead the way at the top of the attendance table, so thank you for your continued support.

Brave-Faced Nomads bested by Blaby.

Nomads lost out by a single goal on the road to Blaby & Whetstone. by Reece Preston-Hayes.

Nomads travelled to local-ish, Leicestershire side Blaby & Whetstone after beating Blaby’s reserves at home in the week our red and white fighters were hoping to pull a double. It would be no easy feat, Blaby have only lost 2 of their games in the league, the same amount that Nomads have won. Anstey have been performing better on the road, add to that our ability to mimic the form of the team we are opposing then it could even our chances if nothing else it raised some hopes from Noisy Nomads in the stands who made up just under half of the crowd. It was a wet morning but the clouds paused to enjoy the game as kick off commenced. Wet conditions tend to favour a speedy attack, Nomads pacey Joe Hartopp would surely have a fun time slipping past the defence, and this is what happened early on, as Nomads came out the stronger team. A couple of questionable offsides halted early chances and Blaby grew stronger, the hosts playing and passing the ball around fantastically well, using plenty of space to move the ball patiently up the pitch. Nomads defended well in the final third and quick counter-attacks were unsuccessful as both sides stalked an opening goal. 20 minutes in and still seeking the first goal Nomads had a chance with a free kick just a few yards from the box, a well curled attempt from Chris Rudkin, Blaby’s keep met the ball as it came in but couldn’t hold it cleanly forcing a corner, set-piece training is needed though as a combination of a wayward delivery and no-one attempting to attack the ball meant it was easy for Blaby to clear. We couldn’t afford to keep throwing away chances, as the hosts go hunting for their goal and almost caught us offguard after Taylor came out to sweep an attack away but a miscue meant Blaby had an open goal to score into, a chipped attempt was going to punish us but Olly Preston saves the day with a quick tip of the head to force a corner. Nomads couldn’t afford sloppy defending but as it comes in we cleared the first attempt well but the music must of stopped as Nomads stood like statues as a long range shot from Blaby opened the scoring.Despite the shock of a going behind Nomads quickly replied, a quick wingattack and the ball was delivered, Joe Hartopp decided that he wasn’t having luck with his foot so hit it in with his knee, a much KNEEDED equaliser. A goal before half time was the last major event of the game, Nomads broke through and a great through ball had Joe one on one again but somehow he was judged offside and Blaby quickly broke the ball back into Nomads half, and into our box, their striker had a man infront of him to the left so he decided to shoot himself only for Taylor to save and the offside striker finished the job as the other linesman kept his flag down. Blaby lead 2-1 and a second half of desperate chances and even back to back play meant the second period was goalless and Nomads were going home pointless. Blaby & Whetstone 2-1 Nomads

AROUND THE COUNTIES By STAN WILTON – Saturday Showdowns! This is the time of the season when its difficult to keep track of all the fixtures in outside competitions. Pity the poor Fixture Secretary! This week it is the turn of County Cup competitions to distract from league games. Perhaps the most attractive fixture of the day was at AYLESTONE PARK where high flying DUNKIRK were the visitors in a top-of-the-table clash, with Park coming out on top 4-2. But it was Blaine Hancock who gave the Boatmen the best start with a goal two minutes in. Parity was restored on the quarter hour mark by James Smith, and that how it stayed until five minutes into the second half when Kieran Neat gave Aylestone the lead for the first time. Sam Grouse levelled within ten minutes but two goals in the last eight minutes from Andy Fell and Mason Brown keep the Leicestershire side on top of the table. With the team in inspired goal scoring form and a goal machine by the name of Steve Hart leading the attack, there is little wonder few relish facing STAPENHILL at the moment. BORROWASH VICTORIA are the latest to feel the sting as Hart continued his phenomenal scoring record with his second five-goal haul of the season which began in the 27th minute and ended in the 73rd. Tom Liversage added the other two in the home side’s 7-3 win with one in each half. By the time Idris Kabongo had got the Vics first in the 66th minute they were already six goals in arrears. A spirited late surge by the visitors pegged the score back a little as Josh Williams and Michael Fitzhugh found their way onto the scoresheet. Thus, Steve Hart brought his tally of goals for the season up to 26 – 13 ahead of his nearest challenger, South Normanton Athletic’s Luke Crosby, in the race for the Golden Boot. WEST BRIDGFORD move into third spot with their second home win in three days. Thursday last saw them make progress in the Nottinghamshire FA Senior Cup, and today goals from Carl Westcarr on 50 minutes and Jimmy Spiers twenty minutes later accounted for a GEDLING MINERS WELFARE on a rain soaked afternoon in an area of Nottingham perhaps appropriately named on this occasion as the National Water Sports Area. Gedling are struggling to get out of the bottom two and it would seem that progress on the field is not meeting with that being made off it by a club determined to provide an excellent ground for their supporters. BARROW TOWN lost ground at the top when ASHBY IVANHOE visited and returned home with the points thanks to a 3-0 win. They were two up inside the first six minutes through Luke Thorogood and Joel Carta, the latter adding his second of the game in 62 minutes to seal the win. Dan Jelley’s 16th minute goal proved to be the only one of the game as BIRSTALL UNITED beat HOLWELL SPORTS, and the game between RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC and KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE was abandoned after 35 minutes due to a waterlogged pitch as the same thunderstorm which caused Notts County’s Football League encounter to bite the dust to mean the teams will have to start again. SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC kept up their challenge at the top with a 4-0 win over ELLISTOWN & IBSTOCK UNITED thanks to the afore mentioned Luke Crosby hitting a second half hat-trick inside twenty minutes. Unfortunately, he was still two behind Steve Hart on the day. Lee Fell’s 32nd minute hit broke the deadlock before Crosby stepped in during the second half. Three games were played in the Derbyshire FA Senior Challenge Cup with BELPER UNITED ending any hopes of Nottinghamshire Senior League Sandiacre Town making any progress. Two first half goals from Sam Vickers put United well in control and Josh Wisdom added a late third just for good measure. Staffordshire Senior League outfit Hilton Harriers provided the shock of the day when they sent struggling HOLBROOK SPORTS packing by a 5-3 scoreline. If my old memory serves me correct, this was Hilton’s first ever win in this competition. Paul Fisher after two and 40 minutes and Sylvanus Bockarie on 34 minutes got the Holbrook goals in the first half, but at the time of writing further details are not known regarding this game. Lee Sutton on 36 minutes and Sam Graves in the last first half minute got GRAHAM STREET PRIMS goals on their visit to Central Midlands League side Clay Cross Town. But a brace from Lee Clay and a winner from Callum Lytham saw the home side through in front of a bumper crowd. ARNOLD TOWN were winners by the odd goal of five in their all East Midlands Counties League Nottinghamshire FA Senior Cup first round tie at GREENWOOD MEADOWS. Aaron Mitchell and Jack Upton scoring for the Greens.

A Brief history of the Anstey Nomads F.C. The Anstey Nomads were formed in 1947 and were champions of the Leicestershire Senior League in the seasons 1951-52 and 1953-54. The following season the Club recorded its’ highest ever attendance of 4,500 against the Athenian League side Hayes in the 2nd round of the FA Amateur Cup. But just one year later the Club decided to join the Central Alliance. In 1966-67 the East Midlands Regional League was formed, mainly from Clubs in the Central Alliance, and of the six seasons the Nomads spent in this League, they gained a top four place in three of them. In 1971 Anstey Nomads were chosen to feature on Bartholomew’s Football map of England and Wales, our badge and information (albeit with incorrect founding date) is listed 5th between Andover and Arsenal! In 1994-95 the Nomads created history by winning both the Leicestershire FA Senior Cup and the Junior Cup in the same season. In 2008-2009 season the Nomads had one of their most successful seasons by winning the Leicestershire Senior League, The Battle of Britain Cup, The Rollestone Charity Cup and The Beacon Bitter League Cup. Our first season in the EMCL 2009/2010 saw the Nomads finish bottom but our good reputation helped us not get relegated and we stayed in the EMCL . Season 2011-12 Nomads were in the F.A Cup for the first time in our history The 13/14 season was a time of transition for the Nomads, with some struggle, we managed to remain in the EMCL. Nomads also had their first Under 18's Floodlit team; they had an impressive season with several players stepping up to our senior sides. 2014/15 Rob Harris became first team manager alongside former Manager Jimmy Withers; Nomads' continued in with Youth development with the Under18's floodlit side, and debuted a new Under 16's side. 2015/16 Rob & Jimmy lead Nomads first team to their best EMCL performance, our u18’s continued with our youth progression and a u21’s side provided further youth development. Club won Grounds award from EMCL. 2016/17 Ground overhauled with a fresh new setup for the clubhouse and surrounding buildings, the old changing rooms that we got 2nd hand in 1947 have finally gone and replaced with more modern rooms for players and officials.

A brief history of Holwell Sports FC Holwell Sports started life as Holwell Ironworks Football Team in 1902. The ground at Asfordby Hill is where most workers employed at the Holwell Iron Works lived and where the working men’s club was set up for social and fitness activities. The unique club emblem of the Stanton Horse with an arrow through its chest originates from the crest of the Crompton’s, a Derbyshire family who’s involvement with the original Stanton Ironworks group dates from 1855, the group lasting for more than 80 years. The crest symbolises the death of horsepower and the emergence of electricity power generation. When the works needed to meet market demand in the 1870’s it was decided to work through the night but the company found it impossible to provide adequate lighting using portable lamps or gas lighting. Crompton had read of the development of the electric arc light and bought some French machinery and lamps, thereby transforming the group’s output after installation in the works. Crompton went on to design a new type of generator and began manufacturing electrical plant on his own as Crompton and Crompton, much later to become Brooke Crompton Parkinson in the 1960’s and part of the Brush and later Hawker Siddeley engineering groups of the eighties. There are, to this day, Brooke Crompton Parkinson motors driving industrial machines. Holwell’s most famous son was Dixie McNeil (born 16 January 1947 in Melton Mowbray) who famously played as a striker. As a schoolboy, McNeil signed for his local club Leicester City F.C. after playing for Holwell Works. However he did not fit into the First Division side's plans and was released. He eventually made his football league debut for Exeter City F.C. in the 1966-67 season against Wrexham, a club he would later play for and manage. Dixie was a nickname to savour, associating him with the country’s most famous footballer of his day, Dixie Dean, who set a record when he smashed 60 league goals for Everton in the 1927/28 season. In 1988 the Holwell Works closed and the club’s name was changed to Holwell Sports Football club. In 2007 Holwell approached Corus who own the waste land around the facility and secured a 30 year lease on part of this ground to generate a new training area, at the rear of the main pitch on Welby Road, this is still an on going development. In 2008/2009 Holwell gained promotion to FA level 6 on the national football league pyramid, one of the first clubs in the EMCL league where we compete against teams from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as well as teams from Leicestershire. In this first season Holwell finished a respectable seventh. Our reserves continue to play in the Leicestershire Combination League, and we have a newly formed development squad playing in the North Leicestershire Leaque. Holwell had their best ever run in the FA Cup last season getting as far as the 3rd round taking Bedworth United to a replay and extra time.

AROUND THE COUNTIES By STAN WILTON – Midweek Madness!

BLABY & WHETSTONE ATHLETIC moved up into second place in the table as a result of a 5-0 win at GRAHAM STREET PRIMS. Aaron Preston collected another hat-trick to keep on the heels of Steve Hart for the league’s leading goalscorer. Preston scored twice in the first ten minutes and Rikki Bates on the half hour helped the Leicester side into a healthy interval lead. Preston completed his hat trick in the 77th minute and Jack Lane completed the scoring for the evening three minutes later. Luke Crosby’s 65th minute goal propelled SOUTH NORMANTON ATHLETIC up to sixth in the table as a result of their 1-0 win at HOLWELL SPORTS, and ARNOLD TOWN completed a home win over visiting KIMBERLEY MINERS WELFARE by the odd goal of three, all the goals coming in the second half. Mason Coy opened the scoring for the Eagles on 53 minutes, but Martin Lench restored parity two minutes later. Chris Richard put Arnold back on top in the 72nd minute and when Kimberley’s Kyle Wrenn was sent off shortly afterwards it made it easier for the Eagles to claim the three points. Another team completing a welcome home win was HOLBROOK SPORTS, and once again all the goals came in the second half. Niall Mather opened the scoring for them seven minutes after the break and seven minutes after that Sebastian Szondi in creased the lead to two. It took another seven minutes for the lead to be increased further courtesy of an own goal from Ollie Preston, and Mather completed his brace of goals seven minutes from the end. But visiting ANSTEY NOMADS had the claim on the last goal in their 1-4 defeat when Steve Armson scored a consolation four minutes from the end. Shipping goals seems to be nothing new for BORROWASH VICTORIA as RADFORD completed a 4-1 win over them at Surrey Street, where, just for a change, all the goals came in the first twenty minutes. Frazer Campbell put Radford ahead on ten minutes but Joe Plant had levelled within a minute. Errol Campbell then did something which seems quite remarkable – he scored twice for Radford in the 18th minute with Ashley Miles completing the remarkable scoring spree two minutes later. Having seven wins from their first seven games and boasting a winning run which goes back to last April was hardly the daunting task one would have though it to be for struggling GEDLING MINERS WELFARE as they visited high-flying Central Midlands League side Hucknall Town in the Nottinghamshire FA Senior Cup. Goals from Mitch Slawson just five minutes in and Jordan Whitehead two minutes after the break took visiting Gedling through to the Second Round. Also through to the Second Round are RADCLIFFE OLYMPIC, but fellow East Midlands Counties League side DUNKIRK took them to extra time and penalties before Olympic were able to progress. Bruno Holden put the Boatmen ahead on 17 minutes, but an own goal from William Rawson two minutes later brought the scores back level. Brandon Burke put Dunkirk back in front on 29 minutes only for Conor Moore to level again five minutes before half time. No further scoring and Radcliffe progressed as a result of a 6-5 penalty shoot-out.
