On May 27th we hosted the University of Regina Luncheon for our members. President Timmons gave a very informative presentation on what is currently happening with the University in Regina and throughout the Province. Following her presentation there was a great information session. Thank you to the Prince Albert Golf & Curling Club for the great food and hospitality.
A Message from the CEO~ Merle Lacert Hello Members, Summer is upon us, and while it is a quieter time for the Chamber, we are working to define our next year ahead. We are excited to have five new Directors joining our Board for the 2013-2014 season. Please watch for the September newsletter for full information on our entire 2013 – 2014 Board of Directors. The Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce is working to define our calendar of events and luncheons for the next year. In addition to our normal operations, we will also be completing initiatives through our Investment & Growth and Government Affairs Committees. We do have a current survey out to our membership, please take the time to complete and offer some insights, all insights gained are important as we assess and organize our priorities for the year ahead. Although we are busy planning for the next year, we also have several events occurring in June. We are looking to offer our members information on various topics; June 11/13 Presentation by Service Canada to advise business owners/managers on the many programs and services that Service Canada offers to business, June 20/13 – Join us for a “Productivity 101” presentation, this presentation is geared to assist employers get more form their current work force through gained efficiencies , currently very valuable as many employers face labour challenges or shortages. As well we will be hosting a luncheon on June 27/13 with the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation, come hear about current research as well as examples of how previous research has lead to current improvements with our healthcare. I do hope everyone enjoys the great summer days ahead, have a great and safe summer everyone.

Initially established as a cultural dance group in 1963, the Prince Albert Multicultural Council was officially recognized as a non-profit corporation in 1974. In 1984, with a growing newcomer population in Prince Albert, the Council began expanding its services to supporting refugee and immigrant newcomers settling in Prince Albert and the surrounding area. Today, the PAMC continues to work with this rapidly-growing and dynamic newcomer community, while continuing to promote multicultural and anti-racism activities. The PAMC offers assistance and advice to newcomers to Canada. Services include translation and interpretation, aid in understanding and filling out paperwork and applications for various necessities in Canada, referrals to available resources and organizations within the community, connecting clients with educational and employment opportunities, and working with partner organizations and various levels of government to better serve newcomer clients and the community of Prince Albert and area in general. Access to English language instruction plays a key role in the success of newcomers during settlement and throughout their lives in Canada. We offer English for Employment class (funded by the Government of Saskatchewan), connections to private tutors, and resources to help newcomers strengthen their language skills. The PAMC also offers cultural programming, as well as integration activities and events for newcomers and the community in general. We understand that such work is not only very important for new immigrants to Canada, but also for Canadians who have been born into our community and/or call Prince Albert their home. Integration is not a one-way process. Multiculturalism allows for, but also requires, the participation of all sectors of the community. The PAMC also offers, for example, Cree, Spanish and Mandarin language classes, as well as discussion groups and workshops. On March 21st every year, the PAMC recognizes and celebrates the UN International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. On July 1st annually, we organize Canada Day celebrations on the riverbank (Dave Steuart Park). Finally, on September 28th & 29th, 2013, The Prince Albert Multicultural Council is once again proud to partner with the EA Rawlinson Center for the Arts to present Tapestrama 2013 Cultural Festival. Tapestrama is a cultural showcase, a two-day multicultural art and folk festival, and an opportunity for residents to learn about the many cultures and peoples that make up our northern Saskatchewan community. In 2013, the PAMC will celebrate its 50th anniversary in conjunction with Tapestrama 2013.

SHARE is a non-profit health care organization located in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan offering residential and vocational programs for people with severe and persistent mental health and dual diagnosis issues. Incorporated in 1983, SHARE receives the majority of its funding through a contract with the Prince Albert Parkland Regional Health Authority- mental health programs. A smaller portion of funding is generated by fundraising and other contracts associated with the vocational programs of the organization. SHARE’s Mission Statement is “Promoting the respect and dignity of people affected by mental illness through ensuring the consideration of their own personal goals, feelings and beliefs. Operating under the awareness of the significance of the client’s cultural and socio-economic background. Inspiring clients to reach their maximum level of rehabilitation by teaching them to access positive supports in the community.” SHARE offers 3 types of programs; residential, vocational, and recreational. The residential rehabilitation program aims to reintegrate clients into the community and provide them with positive support systems in the community. The respite program provides short term housing solutions for clients. Our vocational programs provide training and experience in the workforce, with varying levels of support according to the needs of the client. Recreation programs aim to increase client wellness. The client population that requires services from SHARE is changing. Many of the clients are aging and no longer able to participate in the traditional vocational programs that are being offered. Others are requiring a “place to be”, with meaningful daily experiences, but because of the severity of their disability they cannot participate in the vocational programs that are currently available. Ages vary from 18 to 80 years of age, with almost half being of aboriginal descent. All of the clients have persistent mental health concerns that affect their daily living on an ongoing basis that prevent them from participating in many community activities and services. Currently, SHARE provides daily activities such as snow shoveling, flyer delivery, litter picks, moving jobs, mail outs and putting up and taking down of signage for Prince Albert’s real estate agencies. We also provide recreational outings and daily activities for clients unable to participate in vocational programs. 2013 is the 30th anniversary of SHARE in Prince Albert. Our programming and facilities have expanded to meet the needs of an increasing number of clients. Frauds and Scams Target Business “Fraud� is generally defined as the false representation of facts by word or conduct, by false or misleading allegations, or by concealment of information that should have been disclosed, such that the representations made deceive or are intended to deceive a victim resulting in a loss of material item or financial asset. We think of frauds and scams as impacting on consumers, while in reality business and professional organizations are the new target. The business community is aware of the potential for incidents of fraud by employees, customers, suppliers and contractors. Most have some risk mitigation tactics in place to guard against severe losses. Business is less prepared to mitigate the risk associated with the most rampant fraud against business today, mass marketing fraud (MMF). International law enforcement agencies estimate that 80% of all MMF activity is run by organized crime. MMF does not respect international borders, uses mobile technology around the world, is extremely difficult to identify and catch, and requires large measures of international law enforcement co-operation. Years ago MMF targeted consumers searching for large numbers of victims to generate large numbers of small dollar transactions. Today the perpetrators pursue business and government targets that require less effort to produce a smaller number of victims generating fewer transactions with much larger dollar value. Business victims are thinly staffed, use significant delegation of authority, lack adequate operational controls, and carry larger bank balances presenting very attractive targets. Email expeditions are the tool of choice to exploit the business community. Electronic mailing lists are cheap to acquire and on-line commercial directories are readily available. Brands are easily duplicated with look-alike websites and messaging material. These emails, issued in bulk by servers to illprepared businesses, typically have attachments or links that carry spy-ware or mal-ware viruses designed specifically to locate, capture and transmit specific bank information and financial records. These recent viruses are so sophisticated and evolving so quickly that many go undetected by anti-virus software. The result is an ever rising cost to business victims. For those businesses interested in reducing their vulnerability to fraudulent acts, the BBB can assist in identifying a range of external and online resources that may be useful.
