On September 19th, 2013 the Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce hosted the annual Prince Albert Raiders luncheon at the Travelodge and sponsored by the Prince Albert Daily Herald. New coach Cory Clouston was warmly welcomed by the Prince Albert business community. A Message from the CEO~ Merle Lacert Hello Members, The Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce is completing efforts to engage on several matters that have been a priority for our members. These include releasing our recommendations on improving Prince Albert’s tax model for commercial business. All members should be receiving a copy of these recommendations very shortly. After 13 years, the Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce Christmas Ornament program has come to a end. Due to the rising costs of the ornaments, the Chamber will look for other ways to continue our support of the Victoria Hospital Foundation. We are proud to have contributed over $11,000.00 to the Victoria Hospital foundation from previous ornament sale proceeds.

Michael Mitchell - Chairman Michael has been involved with the Chamber over the past 14 years serving on various committees such as the Marketing, Taste of Prince Albert, Governance, Human Resources, Executive, Ambassador and volunteering at the Chamber luncheons and events giving countless time and effort to build a strong Chamber. Past and current community involvement includes Prince Albert Homeless Community Advisor board member and Chair for 8 years ~ Work achieved 13 million dollars in funding for Prince Albert to help support homeless initiatives such as YWCA Our House transitional Shelter for men and women, Canadian Mental Health 8plex for people with mental illness and many other projects. Served on other committees Hills of Peace Campgrounds, Prince Albert Volleyball, Elder in the Community of Christ Church. Coaching volleyball boys and girls from ages 12 to 18. Currently coaching volleyball at St. Mary High School and Club Volleyball, as well enjoys doing yoga, Tai Chi, biking, walking and working in his church as an Elder. Most proud of his daughter Danielle who spend last year in Switzerland learning to speak Swiss German and German thanks to Prince Albert Rotary. As well his son Lucas who is this years President of his school council. Married to wife Marlene his partner in the business and support in all that our family does together.

Larry Fladager – 1st Vice Chair Larry was born and raised in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. He later moved to Regina where he attended the University of Regina, graduating with a Bachelor of Administration in 1978. Larry began his career in Regina with Cooperative Data Services Limited as an Information Technology Project Manager.

In 1986, Larry relocated to Prince Albert to manage the design, construction, and implementation of the information technology infrastructure for the newly completed Northern Institute of Technology (NIT). In 1988, NIT was amalgamated with the Regional Community College to form SIAST Woodland Campus. Since joining SIAST, Larry has held progressively responsible management positions, and in


1998 was appointed Director of SIAST Woodland Campus. Larry is the past chairperson of the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce, and is currently active in the chamber executive committee. Larry has served as: · Director with Skills Canada Saskatchewan · Director with the Woodland Childcare Cooperative · Director with Regional Economic Development Authority · Member of the Canadian Correction Service Community Advisory Committee · Member of Weyerhauser Canada Community Advisory Committee · Chairman of the Prince Albert and District Planning Commission · Chairman of the Prince Albert Rural Water Utility · Senator with the University of Regina for two terms · Most recently two terms as Reeve of the RM of Buckland

Shelley Cannon – 2nd Vice Chair Shelley Cannon is a Barrister and Solicitor with Wilcox Zuk Chovin Law Offices and practices all aspects of the law in their Prince Albert, Spiritwood and Leoville offices. Shelley has a growing emphasis on corporate and


commercial law and provides services to many clients within the Prince Albert and area business community. Shelley also focuses her practice in the areas of civil litigation, wills and estates, real estate, and family law. In July of 2013, Shelley was awarded the Gary J. Bigg Memorial Scholarship in San Francisco, California, from the Canadian Caucus of the American Association of Justice. This scholarship is awarded to a young lawyer who displays an aptitude in civil litigation and a keen interest in representing plaintiffs, the disadvantaged and the injured; and a commitment to enhancing civil trial practice and access to justice issues. Prior to being admitted to the Bar of the Law Society of Saskatchewan as a Solicitor, Shelley was employed in various roles such as the Victim Witness Coordinator for the Department of Justice, Child Protection Officer with the Ministry of Social Services, and Youth Facility Worker with Corrections and Public Safety. Shelley has a Bachelor of Sociology from the University of Saskatchewan, a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Regina, in addition to her Juris Doctorate from the University of Saskatchewan. Shelley is a board member of Prince Albert Crime Stoppers, the Investment and Growth Committee, the Prince Albert Bar Association and District Governor for the Saskatchewan Trial Lawyer’s Association. Shelley was born and raised on a farm east of the City of Prince Albert and continues to make Prince Albert her home. Shelley is actively involved in various community groups and activities and enjoys recreational sports such as football, slow pitch and volleyball.

Gordon Jahn, B. Comm., F.C.A.- Secretary Treasurer Gordon is a Partner with MNP, a Canadian chartered accountancy and business consulting firm. Approximately half of Gordon’s time is spent in the delivery of audit services to a variety of clients including not-for profit organizations, municipal and First Nations governments, and their related business operations. Gordon’s other area of practice is owner managed business. He enjoys providing business and income tax advice to a wide range of business in Northern Saskatchewan. Gordon is the Regional Assurance Partner for Northern Saskatchewan (includes Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Lloydminster, Humboldt, Melfort, Hudson Bay and La Ronge). As a result, he participates in the development of assurance policies and procedures for the entire firm and assists in implementation. Gordon has been active in his profession. He was a member of the Professional Conduct Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Saskatchewan from June of 1998 to 2002, and a member of the Discipline Committee from June 2003 to 2009. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Saskatchewan institute in 2007.


George Vass – Board Appointed George Vass has managed the local Community Futures for over 4 years and is currently a director of the Prince Albert Exhibition Board, Co-Chair of the Regional Newcomers Advisory Committee in addition to being board member of the Prince Albert Chamber. George spent 32 years in Alberta before relocating to Prince Albert to be close to his grandchildren. While in Alberta, he was a commercial lender with Royal Bank for 21 of those years and then moved onto General Manager of a developmental lending group that provided small business loans throughout Alberta. George has been active with various Chambers throughout the three western provinces having first started as member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in his earlier years in Victoria, Terrace and later Saskatoon and eventually Edmonton. In 1984 George, with the help of a local realtor, helped establish the Pincher Creek Chamber of Commerce. He was active in networking groups with the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce a director and trade show coordinator for the St. Albert Chamber of Commerce.

Jayne Remenda—Board Appointed Jayne has twenty- five years of leadership, management, marketing, promotions and event planning experience. She has held many high-profile positions including: Executive Director, Marketing and Promotions Manager, Marketing Consultant, and has been appointed to numerous civic, regional and provincial board of directors positions. Jayne holds certificates in Business Planning, Computer Clerical, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design; Graduate Certificates in Destination Development and Leadership; and is currently working on her Graduate Research -Tourism as a Source of Economic, Social, Cultural and Environmental Sustainability, for her Master of Arts in Tourism Degree. She has been recognized by the National Council of Canadian Women for her work and inspiration to women and was presented a certificate of acknowledgement from His Honour Lieutenant Governor Gordon Barnheart in 2009. She was acclaimed as City Councillor for the City of Prince Albert representing Ward 4 in 2009. Jayne is a long time active citizen of her community and proud mother of 3 children, she continues to look forward to new and exciting opportunities and to learn and share her experiences while supporting others in their efforts.


Elected Board Members Bruce Vance Bruce has been an active member of the business community in Prince Albert since arriving in the city with his family 11 years ago. As the Business Manager and Director of Marketing for the Prince Albert Raiders, Bruce has an excellent relationship with businesses and organizations throughout the city. This past spring the Raiders won the prestigious Samuel McLeod Business Award for Marketing for 2011. Bruce has been a key contributor in a number of high profile events to the city bringing national recognition to the community. This includes Canadian and Western Canadian softball championships. Most recently Bruce is the driving force behind the first ever Saskatchewan Midget AAA and Female Midget AAA outdoor hockey classic which will take place on the outdoor rink at Crescent Heights Community Club as part of Hockey Day in Saskatchewan on January 19, 2013. Bruce is a member of the Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame executive, Crescent Heights Community Club and manager of the female midget AAA Prince Albert A & W Bears. Bruce is also a member of the 2014 Saskatchewan Winter Games committee.

Greg Breeze Been with Affinity Insurance, (previously Redekopp Insurance) for 19 years as a Financial Security advisor. He has been a director with the Chamber of Commerce for two years. Proudly born and raised in Prince Albert.

Trevor Dutchak Trevor leads over 65 men and women of the 3rd largest ambulance service in Saskatchewan. As a member of North Central Ambulance Association group of companies, Parkland Ambulance is private-contracted ambulance service to the Prince Albert Parkland Health Region. Trevor has been with Parkland Ambulance for 15 years. He is on the Prince Albert Raider Hockey Club Board of Directors and the Prince Albert Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Trevor believes in the community he lives in and together with his wife Coralee and sons Nicholas and Jacob are committed to caring for the community. As Past-President of SEMSA (Saskatchewan Emergency Medical Services Association), Trevor has been instrumental in the provincial wide EMS review undertaken by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health. This leadership document will pave the way for future enhancements to the emergency medical services system in Saskatchewan.


Robert Bratvold Robert grew up in a family that owned and operated a business in a small southwest Saskatchewan town and he has seen both the challenges of operating a business and the value that business brings to a community. He has seen the financial and employment benefits that business bring, but he also recognizes that there are so many more contributions businesses make to the fabric of a community beyond the monetary ones. As a teacher, school administrator and father of five children Robert was involved in his community in various ways. Supporting music and cultural events was one way that he was involved and he also enjoyed coaching many school sports and community soccer teams as well. Part of his community involvement included building connections between community organizations, the school and the business community. He has been consistently impressed by people’s willingness to give of their time and resources to build partnerships that support the community, and especially those that provide opportunities for young people. In July 2011 he moved to Prince Albert as the Director of Education for the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division, and in September he began attending Chamber events and seeing the work the Chamber does for the


community. Although his involvement is recent, Robert looks forward to serving on the board and connecting the work of the business community to the work of the schools. There are so many opportunities that he sees in those partnerships that can benefit businesses, students and the community. Robert looks forward to continuing his work with members of the board and with all members of the Chamber for the years to come.

Darwin Zurakowski Darwin was born and raised in Prince Albert, leaving for the lure of Alberta before returning in 2008 to start up his own business. He is currently part owner of Mark It Signs. Darwin spends his time away from the shop with his FiancĂŠ Tami and his two wonderful SPCA rescue dogs. A member of the Prince Albert Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors since 2009, Darwin is active politically and in the community, hosting numerous charity events for Leukemia research, and the Ronald McDonald House.

Meghan Mayer Meghan Mayer owns and operates Salon 6 with her husband Jaret. Meghan and her husband have two children ages 12 and 4. She has resided in Prince Albert for the majority of her life and has a passion for the development of the City of Prince Albert. She has a heart for helping the people and businesses of Prince Albert, which led her to start Xtreme Makeover, an event which reaches out to the men and women of this community.

Ian Litzenberger Born and raised in southeastern Saskatchewan, Ian and his wife (Shyla) didn't make Prince Albert their home until they moved to the city with their family in 2006. After a few years of working in various sales positions throughout the province, Ian and Shyla decided to open The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in April 2011 where they could focus on providing one on one personal care that they always envisioned a pharmacy to be. As well as co-owner of The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, Ian also works as a sales representative for Power 99fm here in the city. Away from work, Ian enjoys playing slo-pitch, the odd round of golf, spending time with his son on the soccer field, in the dance studio with his daughter or just relaxing with the entire family at the lake. Ian is looking forward to the new friendships, partnerships, and experiences that lie ahead with all the members of the Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce, the Board of Directors, and all of the Chamber staff."


Shayne Lazarowich Shayne Lazarowich is currently the Executive Director of the Prince Albert Multicultural Council (PAMC). He was born in Saskatoon and raised near Asquith, Saskatchewan. Shayne Lazarowich attained a Bachelor of Arts with Honours (Political Studies) at the University of Saskatchewan, and has since lived and worked in various cultures and contexts, including nations such as Canada, Guatemala, Taiwan and Nicaragua, and thus has amassed a wide array of cross-cultural experience and knowledge. Shayne moved to Prince Albert in 2009 to work with Canada World Youth and then eventually took on the role of Executive Director at PAMC. In a very short time, Shayne Lazarowich has become an extremely active member of the community, through the Multicultural Council and various other local and provincial organizations, and as a founding member of Prince Albert folk/roots band, “All Mighty Voice�. Shayne and his wife, Cindy, are happy to call Prince Albert their home.


On a sunny Tuesday morning, new members of the Prince Albert & District Chamber of Commerce flooded into the Tee Room at the Prince Albert Golf & Curling Club. CEO Merle Lacert shared the Chamber of Commerce values and priorities and the benefits of having a chamber membership. And most importantly how their memberships ultimately support the business community in Prince Albert & District. Representing the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors were: Greg Breeze, Meghan Mayer and Shayne Lazarowich.




We were fortunate to have the Honourable Dr. Kellie Leitch visit Prince Albert. While visiting the third largest city in Saskatchewan she enjoyed the beautiful day at the Prince Albert Golf & Curling Club sharing her knowledge with us on the labour issues in Canada and more specifically Saskatchewan. Following the luncheon the floor was opened to a round table discussion. Chamber of Commerce members were able to share and discuss specific labour issues that they are facing in Prince Albert and District.
