BOARD OF A Message from the CEO, Larry Fladager It’s been nearly two years since I was fully engaged in Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce events, issues and opportunities. I would like to thank the PADCC board of directors for the opportunity to serve as the new CEO of this prestigious business organization. I have found that after just one week as CEO of PADCC, the business community continues to grow and expand to meet the needs of the Prince Albert trading area. The Chamber responds by recognizing outstanding businesses through our recent Samuel McLeod Business Awards. The impressive list of nominees and category recipients is a testament to the strength of the business community in Prince Albert and the surrounding region. We could not host the awards ceremony without the many corporate sponsors who contribute toward this event each year. The support from our membership and sponsors is never-ending and the Chamber values your commitment. As we look ahead, the issue of regional planning continues to be an important one. On May 14, the City of Prince Albert is hosting an open house to preview a draft of the Official Community Plan (OCP). The Chamber has participated on the committee responsible for the development of the OCP and fully supports efforts to create an integrated plan to guide the future of Prince Albert. This event will be your opportunity to see the draft and understand the planning efforts. Please plan to attend this event May 14 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the foyer at City Hall. On May 28, the Chamber is hosting a business luncheon with Troy Cooper, Chief of Police for the Prince Albert Police Service. Tickets for the luncheon are available by calling 306-764-6222 or visiting our website. We hope you can join us for a very timely and informative presentation by Chief Cooper on “The Economics of Public Safety,” a fundamental part of business success and attraction in growing communities. Emergency Preparedness Week May 3-9 is Emergency Preparedness Week, a time when we really deliver the message that we need to be prepared for an emergency. Three factors are always present. One is knowing the risk. Yes, there is a possibility, for example, that my power could be off for more than a few minutes. Two is make a plan. If a natural disaster struck our house, where does our family meet? Three is building a kit. Include important papers, water, board games, pet food and other essential items and store it where it is accessible for the family. So often we think it will never happen to us. Someone else will look after us or, if it there is an evacuation, I will have lots of time to prepare. Just as you might plan for a holiday or home renovation, planning for an emergency is important. Planning is also important for a business. What is your backup plan? If you had to remove all staff and customers from the store, what is the evacuation plan? Is it clearly posted? Where is the muster point and is it clearly posted? What backups have you taken for essential or critical records and computers? Sitting down to plan when it is not an emergency needs to happen sooner rather than later. But more importantly, employees need to know their role. How do I evacuate customers? What procedures do we have for routine safety checks? There is a list of things that you need to concentrate on in order to clear the facility during a disaster and then get back to being a great Prince Albert and area business. At the end of the day being a business is more than just sales or customer service. It is also about a safe work environment. Mission Zero from WCB Saskatchewan encourages us to make our workplaces safer thereby reducing injuries and lost time in the workplace. If you need more information on this topic or possible first aid training programs, please contact our office at 306-953-8358.
