Building Bridges for Success Explores Options for New City Bridge The Chamber hosted the Building Bridges for Success conference Wednesday, October 7 to look at options for a second bridge in the Prince Albert region. The conference included a keynote presentation by City of Saskatoon City Manager Murray Totland, who spoke on that city’s experiences with various projects and funding models, including the P3 design program. The conference also included information on daily traffic counts over the city’s current bridge, a review of different funding models and a panel discussion by representatives from groups including SaskBuilds, City of Saskatoon, MLT, Northern Fringe Marketing, ATANA Management, and the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities. A Message from the CEO, Larry Fladager The beautiful fall weather of late has provided some much -needed time for city crews to continue work on “the big dig” project in downtown Prince Albert, which has slowed traffic around the Diefenbaker Bridge for last few months. The Chamber has been advocating for continued asset management of local infrastructure while officials consider options for a second bridge in the region, and it was with that in mind that we hosted the Building Bridges for Success conference this week. This one-day conference brought together experts from around the province to give us insights into the number of vehicles using the bridge each day, various funding models and their legal requirements and advice from those who have worked with the P3 funding model. The P3 program, which brings together funding from municipal, provincial and federal sources, continues to be debated in Prince Albert. VEMAX Management (now ATANA) and Dr. Gordon Sparks provided some insight into just how many people use our bridge. Between 22,000 and 24,000 vehicles pass over the bridge each day, he said. More than 75 per cent of those vehicles are just passing through Prince Albert, continuing on to destinations around the region or south of the city. More surprising is the economic cost of lane closure or a full closure of the bridge. The closure of one lane of the bridge costs approximately $100,000 per day, Sparks said, with a full closure estimated to cost $1.8 million each day. Those numbers got a lot of attention from the crowd and helped reinforce the need to begin planning for a new crossing in this area while our current bridge is still intact. Planning for these types of major infrastructure projects takes time, regardless of the funding model, and should start now. This conference will hopefully be the start of more discussions on this issue as we work together to plan for the transportation needs of this region. As those who spoke at the event noted, it will not only take money, but time and planning, planning and more planning. October 2015

Having “the Chat” about Safety Around the water cooler or coffee room, folks in the workplace often chat about the sport scores, kids, school, fashion and other generic topics but not too often do they have “the chat.” What’s the chat you may ask? The chat is an opportunity to make the workplace a safer place. Many workers concede that workplace safety is someone else’s problem not mine. But it is just as much your responsibility as it is your employer’s. When you take short cuts to save time, don’t where the gear because it’s uncomfortable or fail to follow guidelines because you think you can it better, incidents will happen. Not accidents but incidents! There is a reason the situation happened. When we all take responsibility for our actions, we can, and will make our workplaces safer places. Get involved with your Occupational Health and Safety committee. Think of ways you can make the workplace a safer place to be. In doing so, some of those efforts will carry over into your home and community. How many of us might coach our child’s little league or hockey team? Probably a fair number. But do you have a first aid kit nearby? Do you know where an AED is where you practice or host games? Would you know what to do if something happened? The point is we spend considerable time and effort to make our workplaces safe but we fail to carry that message home with us. Often saying ‘it will never happen to me’ is an easy way to ignore something we should all be taking responsibility for, both in and out of the workplace. Countless messages tell us to buckle up, don’t text and drive, place our kids in car seats and the like. We wear the gear: hard hats, ear plugs and safety footwear at work, but do we do the same at home? Do we put up barricades when digging around our home? Do we keep small children or pets away from power tools? Being safe is as important at work as it should be at home. Carrying the message of safety to your home, the playing field or other community locations makes us all safer. Keeping your family away from the hospital emergency room makes for safer communities. Carry the message from the workplace home and be sure to wear the gear, read instructions and use tools safely no matter where you are. Everyone wins when we make things safe!
