OVER VIEW – FEBRUARY 2018 In the month, as many as 39 terrorist attacks took place in Pakistan, which claimed the lives of 94 people, and wounded 123 others. These attacks also included Four (04) suicide blasts, which took place in Mastung , Swat, Bajur Agency and Quetta. Those killed in terrorist attacks in February included 24 civilians, 40 LEA personals, and 30 terrorist. Highest number of terrorist attacks and consequent casualties for any one region of Pakistan was reported from Balochistan.

Eleven personnel of Pakistan Army, including an officer, embraced martyrdom whereas 13 others received injuries in a suicide attack in Swat city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Saturday. Initial reports suggested that the bomber blew himself up in a ground where soldiers were playing volleyball in Sharifabad area of Swat’s Kabal district. The attack was carried out at a sports unit of an army camp, the military’s media wing said in a

Police on Saturday arrested a teenager accused of raping and murdering his seven-year-old brother inside a coaching center in Karachi. The body of the slain child was found from the building of a coaching centre near National Stadium on Thursday. After investigating the matter, police today arrested the victim's brother, claiming that he had murdered his sibling after their father had beaten him up. Police say the accused, who is also a drug addict, had himself informed the family of finding his brother's dead body.

Three persons died when a goods train on Saturday hit a motorcycle rickshaw at an unmanned railway crossing in Sheikhupura. A Lahore-bound goods train hit a motorcycle rickshaw at an open rail crossing near Theriyanwala. As a result, 30year-old Shagufta, 10-year-old Komal and 6-year-old Zahra died on the spot. Two more women were injured in the incident.The rickshaw driver survived by jumping off the vehicle before the mishap and fled.

Police took suspects into custody over alleged rape and murder charges of three minors in different cities of Punjab on Saturday. The body of a 12-year-old boy was found on Burewala’s Multan Road early Saturday morning, who was reportedly raped before being killed.he boy named Ali Manzoor, who was a resident of Azeemabad, had left his house for tuition two days ago but never came back. The victim’s family helped the police arrest the prime suspect in the case.

A stage performer identified as Sumbul Khan was shot dead for resisting an abduction bid in Mardan on Saturday. The actress was fatally shot by three armed men who had broken into her house in Sheikh Maltoon Town and demanded that she accompany them to perform at a private event. Upon resisting, the men opened fire on her resulting in her death, police said. One of the accused identified as Naeem Khattak, who is a former police constable, has been arrested while the search for the rest of his accomplices is ongoing.

A Chinese national was shot dead on Monday in an apparent targeted killing by armed assailants in Karachi. The incident, which took place in Karachi’s Zamzama area, was termed targeted killing as the victim was shot after being followed by armed assailants, police said. A passerby identified as Hassan Abbas was wounded in the incident.

Three labourers died and two others injured as a building collapsed in Hyderabad’s residential area on Monday. According to reports, three laborers Irshad, Haleem and Rasheed died when the first floor of an under-construction building collapsed.

Security forces in Pishin district arrested 12 suspects, including four alleged members of Afghanistan’s secret agency National Directorate of Security (NDS), during a search operation. The operation was conducted in Surkhab area of Pishin district. According to reports, the search operation was conducted by Levies personnel in the Surkhab Afghan refugee camp and its adjacent localities a couple of days ago.

Wazir tribesmen attack office of pro-govt militia over lawyer’s killing.Tribesmen from the Ahmadzai Wazir clan, Wana South Waziristan on Tuesday attacked the pro-government Taliban militant’s office in Dera Ismael Khan and set it on fire in protests triggered by a youths killing in the heart of the metropolitan. As a result of the fire, almost all of the Taliban office which is located in Madeena Colony was burnt along with its belongings and two vehicles parked inside. The militants, however, managed to escape before the arrival of angry tribesmen.

Two men in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) passed away late on Monday night, after being injured during Indian shelling on the Line of Control (LoC) earlier during the day. An AJK political administration official confirmed the news of their death to the media on Tuesday.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Tuesday arrested former Balochistan food minister Mir Izhar Hussain Khosa over embezzlement charges. According to NAB sources, Khoso, a member of the ruling PML-N, has inflicted a loss of Rs280 million to the national exchequer. Khosa, who was elected from PB27 Jaffarabad, is expected to be produced before an accountability court for a remand hearing by NAB on Wednesday.

Balochistan Frontier Corps (FC) on Tuesday, apprehended 11 suspects during intelligence-based operations in different areas of the province, states a press release issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The operations were conducted in Surkhab, Kanak Valley and near Moro River. FC soldiers also recovered weapons and ammunition, including explosives, mines, detonators and fuses, mobile Sims and communication equipment. Earlier, Balochistan Frontier Corps (FC) on January 30, arrested 10 suspects during multiple intelligence-based operations (IBOs). The IBOs were conducted in Dera Murad Jamali and Dera Bugti areas that resulted in the recovery of weapons and ammunition including explosives, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), antipersonnel mines, hand grenades, accessories of different weapons and ammunition, the ISPR said.

Civil Defence Department, Rawalpindi has decided to launch crackdown from March 1 against 30,000 private schools, colleges, academies, clinics and hospitals having no state-of-the-art fire-fighting arrangements throughout the district. The authorities have issued final notices in this regard. The Civil Defence Department has started setting up teams for conducting the operation.

A huge stock of drugs was seized by a Pakistan Navy (PN) ship operating in the North Arabian Sea during maritime security operations in Pakistan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ),” said a press report from the PN. The PNS Aslat conducted a highly risky operation involving surveillance in the area, seized 5,000 Kgs of hashish that is worth millions of dollars. “After gathering credible evidence, Special Warfare teams of PNS Aslat boarded the suspected vessel, undertook a search operation and seized 5,000kgs of Hashish,” said the PN statement. The seized narcotics and suspects were later handed over to the Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA).

The anti-terrorism court (ATC) hearing the murder case of university student Mashal Khan in Abbotabad announced its verdict on Wednesday, awarding the death sentence to one accused and handing life sentences to five others. Twenty-five accused in the case were awarded sentences of four years each, while 26 suspects were acquitted by the court for lack of evidence.

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa has approved the death sentences of seven terrorists convicted by a military court for involvement in terrorist activities, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement on Friday. All seven convicts, who were members of proscribed organisations, admitted their offences before a magistrate and the trial court, and were subsequently awarded death sentences, the ISPR said. The convicts were identified as Atlas Khan, Muhammad Yousaf Khan, Farhan, Khalay Gul, Nazar Moon, Nek Maeel Khan and Akbar Ali.

Islamabad Police have arrested 14 outlaws, including four drug pushers and recovered narcotics and weapons from their possession, a police spokesman said. He said that Sub-Inspector Azhar Mehmud, Muhammad Iqbal and Imtiaz

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) Mehsud Halqa has appointed Maulvi Khatir as acting chief of their faction after TTP’s deputy chief Khan Said Sajna was reportedly killed in a US drone strike in the Pak-Afghan border region late on Thursday night. Sources said that at least nine close associates of Sajna were also killed in the strike which occurred in Kharh Tangi area of Afghanistan.

An inquiry against a CSP officer, Azra Jamali, for taking gifts as well as money in return of issuing visas to Indian nationals when she was serving as counsel general (CG) in Montreal, Canada, could not be completed by the inquiry officer. A complainant, Raja M Riaz Khan had alleged in his application that CG Azra Jamali issued 150 visas to Indian nationals when she was posted in Montreal as CG, and received cash money, free air tickets and other luxury items as a gift from Mohin Jeet Singh in reward. Upon receiving the complaint, the government called CG Jamali back and initiated an inquiry against her.

Two children, a brother and sister, were burnt to death and 15 shanties burnt to ashes due to fire in a village hut on Saturday. Rescue sources said that fire started from a hut and spread to surrounding shanties in village Hout Jouwahan near Daulatpur Siffan in Nawabshah. The affectees belong to Mithi Tharparkar and they had come to the area to earn a livelihood by cutting sugarcane crop. They appealed to the Sindh government for financial assistance.

The organisers of the Pashtun sit-in on Saturday agreed to wrap up the protest after receiving a written assurance from Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi that their reservations will be allayed within a period of one month. The participants—who remained pitched outside the National Press Club, Islamabad—had vowed not to budge unless their demands, including penalisation of Rao Anwar, recovery of FATA’s missing persons, probe into extrajudicial killings of Pashtuns all over the country, removal of landmines from FATA region, and end to discrimination meted out to tribal people, were met. After assurances from the PM and a signing of an agreement with the government, the sit-in culminated when Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) KP chief Amir Muqam visited venue with a written assurance from the PM. FIVE POINTS AGREEMENT:  A five-point agreement was also signed between the government and the protesters, which reads:  Naqeebullah Mehsud is the son of the whole nation, this is our duty to apprehend accused Rao Anwar as early as possible and bring him to justice.  Regarding mines in South Waziristan, the concerned quarters would be

directed to speed up the process of clearing of mines. The prime minister also directed the KP governor that compensation should be paid to victims of mines either died or injured.  The prime minister announced that an intermediate college will be established in the name of Naqeebullah Mehsud in village Makeen, South Waziristan.  The prime minister also said that genuine grievances raised by Jirga members from different quarters would also be addressed as soon as possible.  The Jirga members thanked the prime minister and other members from the government side. They announced that they would immediately disperse after the assurance.

Army will soon starting building fences along the Pak-Afghan border area in Balochistan, officials said. A meeting was held between the officials of Frontier Corps (FC) and tribal elders in Chaman, Balochistan along the border. The meeting was organised by FC officials, the district administration and tribal elders to discuss the matter of fencing at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in Chaman. The officials said that fences have already been built along the PakistanAfghanistan border in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and soon this project will be started in Balochistan.

The three terrorists declared by US treasury department as specially designated global terrorists (SDGT’s) are the followers of Sheikh Aminullah, who is imprisoned in Saudi Arab from last several years. Sheikh Aminullah, who is an Afghan national but residing in Peshawar since long time runs a seminary in Ganj area of Peshawar. He travelled to Saudi Arabia in 2014 and was later on imprisoned by the Saudi government. The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested an Afghan national from Islamabad who was involved in human smuggling by using fake stamps and letterheads of the Afghanistan embassy for obtaining Thai visas for Afghan government officials by showing them as private citizens.

Three more policemen have been detained for interrogation in the murder case of Naqeebullah Mehsud, who was gunned down with three other persons in an alleged staged encounter in Shah Latif Town off National Highway on Jan 13.

Police have arrested a four-member gang accused of illegally extracting and selling bone marrow from girls and young women from Hafizabad. According to reports, police authorities initiated the action after the father of a 17-year-old girl lodged a complaint alleging the gang members. According to the father of the victim, the gang members took her bone marrow when they called her for a ‘medical check-up’, which they said was necessary for them to financially help the family prepare her dowry.

Acting upon the directives of the supreme court, the administration removed the barriers placed around 26 buildings including Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Model Town residence, the Governor House, Jamia-al-Qadsia, houses of Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) Chief Hafiz Saeed, residence of the former Punjab governor Salman Taseer, and the city police chief’s offices.

Five policemen were arrested on Monday and cases were registered against them for allegedly killing a citizen by firing in Washbood (Panjgur- Balochistan) last night. Govt to change law and severely punish accusers who falsely allege blasphemy. The Interior Ministry on Friday submitted to the Islamabad High Court (IHC) a draft of proposed amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (Peca) 2016 which seek to equate punishments for a false accusation of blasphemy to the punishment for actually committing blasphemy. The punishment for blasphemy in Pakistan ranges from several years in prison to a death sentence. Under existing laws, a person making a false accusation can only face proceedings under Section 182 of the PPC, which entails a maximum punishment of six months, or a mere Rs1,000 fine.

A member of the local peace committee was killed in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast in Bajaur Agency on Friday, sources in the political administration said. Abdur Rehman was travelling in the area when his vehicle was hit by an IED planted on the roadside in Mamond Gat area. Security forces sealed the area and began an operation following the incident.

A fresh security audit of 1,047 educational institutions in Punjab categorised as ‘A+’ has revealed that 446 security guards had been hired by them without a security clearance.
