OVER VIEW – JANUARY 2018 In the month, as many as 15 terrorist attacks took place in Pakistan, which claimed the lives of 61 people, and wounded 36 others. These attacks also included one suicide blasts, which took place in Quetta. Those killed in terrorist attacks in January included 9 civilians, 22 LEA personals, and 31 terrorist. Highest number of terrorist attacks and consequent casualties for any one region of Pakistan was reported from Baluchistan.

A bomb went off in the center of the Pakistani city of Quetta, capital of the province of Balochistan, killing eight people and wounding 23. At least five security personnel lost their lives and six others were injured when a vehicle carrying them turned over after being ambushed in Balochistan's Kech district. A police constable was gunned down by gunmen on Quetta's Raisani Road. A senior officer known for leading raids on militant hideouts escaped assassination when a suicide bomber riding on a motorcycle blew himself up near his vehicle in the port city of Karachi. The bomber had an unknown number of accomplices who opened fire at the car after the explosion. Guards returned fire, killing two of the gunmen. Gunmen shot dead a mother and her daughter who were part of a polio vaccination team in Quetta. Armed assailants shot dead a former police officer, who was fired over the 2011 killing of five Chechen women, in a hit-and-run attack in Quetta. Two security personnel were martyred and four others sustained injuries in a roadside explosion in the Dasht Siyachi area of Jiwani town in Gwadar district on Sunday. Superintendent of Police, Thall, Shaukat Ali Shah Bukhari, and Political Tehsildar, Upper Orakzai Agency, Khaista Akbar, said the drone targeted a house in Dapa Mamazai village at 5:00am. The house was destroyed in the attack and two militants, identified as commander Ihsanullah alias Khuraye and his associate Nasir Mehmood, were the target. Two militants were killed by Security Forces (SFs) in Nawa Killi near Quetta, provincial capital of Baluchistan, on January 6, reports Daily Times. Police said that they were attempting to arrest the accomplices of an arrested suspect who was in the vehicle with the SFs in order to help in identifying the suspects. Security officials (unnamed) said, “However, the suspect’s accomplices opened fire in a bid to help their detained friend escape. In the resulting exchange, one of the attackers, as well as the under-arrest suspect, were killed. Two terrorists, however, escaped from the scene”.

Separately, armed assailants killed a Policeman belonging to the Rapid Response Group (RRG) and injured another near Sariab Flyover in Quetta on January 6, reports The Nation. The deceased was identified as RRG Constable Muhammad Alam. Chaman area of Killa Abdullah District in Balochistan.

At least six people including four personnel of Baluchistan Constabulary were martyred and 17 others sustained injuries in a suicide blast that ripped through Quetta’s Zarghoon road here Tuesday evening.The suicide bomber riding on the motorcycle hit the security officials truck parked near GPO Chowk in the vicinity of the Baluchistan Assembly.

A former militant commander was gunned down in Turbat town of Kech district on Wednesday evening. Levies officials said that Muhammad Bakhsh alias Jaggo was targeted by armed motorcyclists when he came out of his house in the Nasirabad area. He received multiple bullet injuries and succumbed to his wounds on the spot.

The Chinese Embassy in Islamabad confirmed, that one of its nationals died on Jan 12th after being shot during a burglary in the federal capital in late December. A woman was wounded when three armed men broke into a house rented by Chinese nationals in Islamabad's Sector G-10. The assailants reportedly opened fire when the victim resisted, then fled the scene with PKR 550,000 in cash. No arrests have been made so far.

Four suspected terrorists were killed in an encounter with police in Shah Latif Town on Saturday. According to SSP Malir Rao Anwar, a police team conducted a targeted raid after receiving a tip-off about the presence of a terrorist in Shah Latif Town. He said the terrorists attacked the police party with hand grenades and, subsequently, a shoot-out ensued that lasted for 20 minutes.

Four Pakistan Army soldiers were martyred by shelling across the Line of Control in Azad Jammu and Kashmir's Jandrot sector on Monday, according to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The ISPR said three Indian soldiers were killed and a "few injured" in an exchange of fire.

In a similar strike carried out on the Afghan side, two "Afghan extremists" were killed in the Khost province of Afghanistan, said officials.

A traffic police constable was shot dead by unidentified armed men on Quetta’s Raisani Road on Tuesday morning, ARY News reported. The constable was going to report for duty when he came under attack, according to the local police.

Two policemen were martyred in Quetta on Thursday morning in what police have termed an incident of target killing. Two police constables were killed when unknown miscreants opened fire at them on Quetta's Zhargoon Road, near Akram Hospital, police said. One other person sustained injuries in the firing incident, police added.

Two female members of a polio vaccination team in Quetta were shot dead on Thursday, Dawn News reported. Police sources said unidentified miscreants opened fire on the polio team in the Shalkot area, killing a mother-daughter duo in what law enforcers believe is a targeted attack.

One trader was killed and six others were injured in a hand grenade attack in Kharadar's Chagla Street in Karachi on Thursday. Police sources said traders used to collect money daily which was handed in extortion to a local gang on a monthly basis. But this practice of monthly extortion — amounting to Rs0.5 million — was stopped on strict orders of security forces.

The paramilitary troops have gunned down two terrorists in an intelligencebased operation carried out in DG Khan on Sunday, according to the InterServices Public Relations (ISPR).

The unidentified armed motorcyclists shot dead former police officer on Masjid Road of the provincial capital on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as exSHO Airport Police Station Fazal-ur-Rehman Kakar. The former SHO was sitting in car showroom when he was targeted by armed masked men, the eyewitnesses informed media.

Six more Pakistani civilians lost their lives and 25 others were injured as unabated and unprovoked firing and shelling by Indian troops from across the Working Boundary and the Line of Control (LoC) continued in Sialkot border villages and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Saturday. Villages in Phookaliyaan-Bajwat, Chaprar, Sucheetgarh, Harpal, Bajra Garhi, Charwah and Zafarwal-Shakargarh sectors along the Sialkot Working Boundary came under attack in which four people were killed and 19 others injured.

The accused Imran Ali was arrested earlier among other suspects, but he was released by the police without DNA. The aggrieved family insisted on his DNA to clear their suspect and when his DNA test was conducted the report revealed that his DNA matched with the culprit. came back. Punjab Government spokesman has confirmed the arrest of the accused in Zainab case. 

A Pakistani UN peacekeeper was martyred by "members of an armed group" in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday, a United Nations spokesman said. MONUSCO, the largest of the UN missions, has been present in the country since 1999. Prawling, mineral-rich but mired in poverty, DR Congo is in the grip of overlapping political and ethnic crises, and much of the country´s east is in the hands of rival militia groups competing over resources.

Three people were injured in firing by Indian Border Security Forces across the Line of Control (LoC) on Sunday, according to an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) statement. "Indian troops resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violations in Khuiratta, Kotli, Battal and Rawalakot sector targeting [the] civilian population, Three citizens, including two women, were injured due to Indian firing " the DG ISPR said. Indian troops have committed over 170 ceasefire violations along the LoC and Working Boundary (WB) in January 2018, according to information provided to the Senate by Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif last week.

According to security sources, the personnel were patrolling the area when the bomb planted by the roadside exploded. As a result two personnel lost their lives and four others were injured.

A child became the casualty of a bomb blast that took place in the city on Monday, spreading panic across Hyderabad. According to details provided by police, the bomb blast took place at a garbage dump in Qasimabad. A child became the casualty of the attack. Police are trying to ascertain the cause of the bomb blast.

A Rangers soldier was killed and a policeman sustained firearm injury while resisting a robbery attempt in Karachi’s Landhi area. According to police and rescue sources, the incident took place in Landhi-89 area when two robbers intercepted the two security men on a motorcycle in a bid to snatch cash and other valuables. The robbers opened fire when the two men put up resistance. As a result, both of them received bullet wounds.

explosive device at the track linking Balochistan with the rest of the country and detonated it when the Bolan Mail was near the Mangoli area. A portion of the track was damaged in the blast.

Levies Force personnel were shot dead by some unidentified armed assailants at Qambarani Road near Sariab area here on Tuesday. According to the police sources, the victim was a resident of district Mastung.

A girl child was killed and at least 15 others were injured as a 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted various parts of the country on Wednesday. Tremors were reported in Quetta, Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Charsadda, Murree, Sargodha, Shangla, Haripur and Gujranwala, as well as parts of India, Kashmir and Afghanistan. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicentre of the 6.1-magnitude earthquake was 35 kilometres south of Jarm in Afghanistan. The depth of the quake was estimated to be 191.2km, USGS added.

A Head constable and a suspect were killed in a shooting incident in Lahore’s lower court complex on Wednesday. Malik Amjad, an under custody suspect was shot dead after gunmen opened fire on him within the vicinity of the sessions court. Amjad’s accomplice, Ahsan, and Head Constable Asif were also injured in the firing. Constable Asif, who was trying to bring the situation under control after a clash between two groups, succumbed to his wounds on his way to the hospital.

Two cops were killed and five others injured in a police van and tractor-trolley collision at Gujra Road in Jhang late on Tuesday night. According to sources, a speeding tractor-trolley hit a police van at Gojra Road in Jhang area. As a result, two police officials, Asad and Faqar Abbas – suffered severe injuries and died on the spot, while five others, Irfan, Ajaz, Zahoor, Naeem and driver, Aslam, sustained injuries. The trolley driver managed to flee the scene; however, the police impounded the tractor-trolley and registered a case against the driver.

Ahmedpur East police have arrested the main accused in the oil tanker fire on the national highway that claimed the lives of 240 people in June last year. According to police spokesman Naeem Akhtar, accused Khalid Raza, Oil Tanker Company’s manager, was responsible for ensuring quality, model and quantity of petrol in the oil tanker. After the Ahmedpur East tragedy, the police had registered an FIR against Khalid Raza of Lakki Marwat who reportedly went into hiding to avoid arrest.
