Interview with ALEX CHARLES COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND?
WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO PERFORM WITH?
AMONG ALL YOUR COLLABORATIONS, WHO INSPIRED YOU THE MOST?
I’m a UK born Singer, Songwriter and Entertainer, from both the Dominican Republic and South London. Throughout the 80’s and 90’s I had a number of R&B hits, as the front man of the internationally recognized Soul band Heatwave with songs like ‘Always and Forever’ and ‘Mind Blowing Decisions’. After 20 years with the band, I have since left to pursue my solo career.
I’ve enjoyed working alongside the late Edwin Starr. His voice and dedication to his work is very admirable. He was such a gentleman when I met with him over twenty years ago, and was a great contributing factor to my growing confidence by likening me to his close friend Jackie Wilson. As you can imagine, a compliment like this added fuel to my creative fire.
WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
W H AT I S T H E L A S T M U S I C YO U BOUGHT?
I have been influenced by the likes of James Brown, Jackie Wilson, Michael Jackson, Steve Wonder and Elvis Presley. These men still influence the industry and musical performance today. I love the fact that they were gimmick free, with no fake publicity or wildly technical camera tricks. It was all in the performance.
The last album I bought was Stevie Wonder’s ‘A Time to Love’. I have to say, it isn’t in my opinion his greatest album but there are some real gems on there like ‘I can’t imagine love without you’ and ‘Passionate Raindrops’. I also love Pharrell’s ‘Happy’ yes I bought it!
Stevie Wonder is an artist I would love to not only to sing with but to write and record with too. He is an icon. I met him briefly at Wembley Arena and had the privilege of shaking his hand. I didn’t touch anything with my right hand until I got home! I laid that hand on my synthesizer and drum machine and felt inspired to write a really cool song. One day the world may hear it.
YOU PERFORM REGULARLY AT PRIMO. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE SHOW?
I pay tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. I’ve been doing this once a month for just over a year. It is a great experience and the audience seems to enjoy themselves – it’s a fantastic workout! I don’t do the moonwalk however, as it’s not a typical MJ tribute. I want to emphasise the songs, stripped back from the production.
Do you have any new projects or releases in the pipeline?
I have a new single to be released in the New Year, titled ‘Girl you’re really wonderful’. I’m looking forward to seeing the reaction to it. I’ve also been working in the studio with UK soul legend Junior Giscombe and UK R&B artist DonE on their British Collective Project. Their first single ‘Romantic’ is already quite popular in the charts.
