NEWS UK VISIT BY AMBASSADOR HELPS PROMOTE INDONESIAN WOOD PRODUCTS In a bid to encourage UK timber importers to increase their purchase of legal and sustainable timber from Indonesia, a delegation from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia has visited a number of manufacturers across the country. With FLEGT and legal and sustainable timber products at the top of their agenda - and led by Indonesian Ambassador to the UK, H.E. Desra Percaya - the delegation visited James Latham, Hanson Plywood, Lambson Building Products and Caravan manufacturer Willerby. During his visit, the Ambassador reiterated his commitment to further strengthen the mutually beneficial partnership between Indonesia and the UK. “We should seize the momentum of the implementation of UK-Indonesia FLEGT-VPA by seeking creative ways to increase supply sustainability of legal and sustainable timber products from Indonesia and ensure that such high-quality timbers remain as the critical part of the UK industry’s supply chain.” “Cooperation should be intensified to add more value to Indonesia’s FLEGT certified timber products and to replicate a similar mechanism with other forest and agriculture commodities. A holistic approach which involves all relevant stakeholders is indispensable. Business and industry associations, as well as consumers and NGOs, play a critical role in shaping perspective and demand, while governments and parliaments from both countries could provide regulatory and market incentives support as stated in the UK-Indonesia FLEGT-VPA .“
UK sales agents and representatives for premium quality timber products from Indonesia, Pacific Rim Wood, who supply a number of timber products to these manufacturers, helped organise the visit. Managing Director, Shaun Hannan commented, “It has been an honour to host the visit, which has already been heralded as a major success in helping to raise awareness of Indonesian FLEGT licensed timber products as well as encouraging UK importers and stakeholders to increase their purchase of legal and sustainable timber products from Indonesia.”
The delegation enjoyed a visit of the Hanson Plywood warehouse where they inspected ,Indonesian Timber products

NEWS BWF - SHIFTING TOWARDS A CIRCULAR ECONOMY BWF Technical Director Kevin Underwood makes a compelling case for the circular economy and how the woodworking industry is positioned to make a positive contribution. WHAT IS THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY? Probably the easiest way to start thinking about the circular economy is to contrast it with how our industrial economy traditionally works. The Circular Economy aims to keep products, components and materials in use for longer, and reuse them, so we get more value (usefulness, or productivity) from them. It has been proposed as a solution to local and national resource security/scarcity issues and as a way to reduce the environmental impacts of our production and consumption, through methods including designing out waste, disruptive innovation, new leasing models and the use of renewable materials.
Automatic crosscut saws
WHY IS WOOD THE MATERIAL OF CHOICE FOR THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY? Producing timber requires significantly less energy than any other mainstream building materials because of its versatility; timber is capable of displacing energy intensive alternatives and reducing pressure on the grid. Timber is also renewable, it uses low energy processes and generates little waste that can be recycled or used as a source of renewable fuel.

FEATURE COMBILIFT TRUCKS HELP DIGITAL GROWTH FOR ENGLISH WOODLANDS TIMBER There’s a bit of a digital and e-commerce revolution happening in the tranquil setting of the South Downs, the home of hardwood timber specialist English Woodlands Timber. Since the start of the pandemic the company has pulled out all the stops for its online marketing activities, and as a result has achieved record sales as well as a large number of new customers. Catering for the bespoke and high-end construction, joinery, furniture and kitchen sectors, the company is experiencing huge demand for its niche products which include boards, cladding and structural timber as well as a wide range of species such as oak, elm, ash and sweet chestnut. Fundamental to its success is the fact that each and every item stocked is now also available to view and buy via the web shop. Equally important however is the ability to efficiently fulfil what Director Ian McNally calls the “pick, pack and dispatch” side of operations once orders have been received. For this, English Woodlands Timber (EWT) has switched to products from Irish handling specialist Combilift which have been instrumental in enabling it to keep pace with the recent 50% growth in business. Having previously used mainstream counterbalance forklifts, Ian and his team were won over
12
www.p-j-production.com
by the multidirectional abilities of Combilift’s C-Series trucks when they saw one in operation at another timber supplier. Having taken delivery of the first C4000E model in 2019, two of these 4t trucks are now in operation at the 4-acre site, together with two 2t capacity Combi-WR4 multidirectional pedestrian stacker trucks. The latter feature Combilift’s unique patented multi-position tiller arm which enables the operator to work at the side of the unit rather than at the rear when working in narrow confines for enhanced safety. EWT’s materials handling consultants Locators supplied all the trucks and also recommended a wider than standard fork carriage of 1950mm for the WR4 models, which increases load stability when carrying 6m long packs or boards. “What differentiates us from other suppliers is our quality and diverse range, best summed up as the choice of length, width and thickness of our products,” said Ian. “But we need to ensure that our own pick, patch and despatch procedures match the ease and efficiency with which customers can select and buy packs and individual boards. The Combilifts can handle all the varied and awkward sized boards we stock, they are nimble, manoeuverable and allow us to work more quickly.”
FEATURE
The ability to move 6m lengths sideways with the C4000E trucks has done away with the need for wide aisles and access areas in the undercover warehouse, and the widths between packs stored outdoors have been more than halved - down to 3m compared to the 6-8m needed for the old two-directional counterbalance trucks. Storing most product in 4m high racking rather than block stacking has also made best use of vertical capacity and Ian reckons that at least 35% extra space has been gained in the existing footprint. This is set to increase once another Combi-WR4 is brought in for use in the machine shop. A further advantage of the Combilifts is their versatility, not just when it comes to lifting and moving products around inside and out, but also their ability to double up as portable work stations to rest boards on whilst they are logged, numbered and photographed before being put online. Owner and MD Tom Compton is particularly impressed with the performance of the Combi-WR4s. “This one operator/ one machine combination has been transformative and has improved productivity by 30- 40% compared to the old trucks. In spite of their relatively small size they can easily lift packs of timber from the top bay of racking. An added bonus is that training staff to use them takes just a few hours.” Sustainability is also a byword at the EWT woodyard, with solar panels on roofs wherever possible, charging stations for those who drive electric vehicles, chippings are used
for biomass and other material is recycled into bedding for horses for example. “It’s electric power wherever possible here and nothing goes to waste,” says Ian. Electric Combilifts were therefore the machines of choice, as they are emission free and are also very quiet compared to diesel machines, which is much appreciated by all on site. Due to the general move to cleaner operation in many sectors, over half of Combilifts now manufactured in the Monaghan HQ are electric powered. Thanks to its digital offering, EWT’s customer base has expanded not only in quantity but also in geographical reach. “We used to typically sell to a radius of 20 – 30 miles but now we sell nationwide,” said Ian. “Also whereas customers generally used to come in person and look through the range with our experts, they can now browse and find exactly what they are looking for from the comfort of their office or their workbench. But if people want to visit us and meet the team, then of course they are always more than welcome!” Ian sums up: “The latest digital technology and the innovative engineering from Combilift has been a winning combination which has enabled our business to expand and flourish, without having to worry about building extra space too.”

FEATURE NEW HOMAG SAWTEQ B-200 SPEEDS UP PRODUCTION AT TIMBERTONE DESIGN Based in Northern Ireland, Timbertone Design has over 30 years’ experience in manufacturing kitchen and bedroom furniture. It began life servicing consumers direct before moving to a trade only business over 20 years ago. The company operates out of a 17,500 sq. ft. purpose-built factory on a two-acre site near Moneymore. It is equipped with advanced production machinery, the latest addition to which is a HOMAG SAWTEQ B-200 beam saw. “This is the third beam saw we’ve purchased from HOMAG,” enthuses Timbertone director, David Anderson. He continues, “Coincidently, the very first piece of equipment we bought from HOMAG was a beam saw and since then we’ve been sold on the quality, performance and reliable back-up service provided by the company. In addition to the SAWTEQ B-200, our HOMAG plant list includes a SANDTEQ W-200 wide belt sander, an EDGETEQ S-380 edge bander with a LOOPTEQ O-300 return system and an XES 200 PUR service station. “Our previous saw was 12 years old and, although it continued to perform consistently well, we wanted to invest in an up-to-date version. The objective was to increase the throughput of the saw as much as possible so we could improve the feed volumes to the edge bander and CNC further down the production line.” A STRONG AND TRUSTING RELATIONSHIP “Over the years, we’ve developed a strong relationship with HOMAG’s area sales manager in Ireland, Derek Reid. His office is nearby, and he always looks after us very well. So,
when it came to looking for a replacement saw, Derek was our first port of call. “We sat down with him and discussed exactly what we wanted from the new saw and Derek recommended the SAWTEQ B-200. This beam saw is very similar to our previous model but is a more intelligent machine and has a faster saw carriage. “After further consultation, we specified it with an upgraded clamping system and wider air tables. This has enabled us to cut smaller pieces and do multiple cuts at once, thus saving time.” A SMOOTH INSTALLATION DESPITE THE PANDEMIC “Despite the machine being installed during the pandemic, it went sweetly with no problems whatsoever. It was delivered on a Monday evening and was up and running by Thursday. On Friday, the HOMAG engineer was able to train us whilst we were actually manufacturing production parts. “Since then, the SAWTEQ B-200 has been working perfectly and is delivering all and more than we expected. The increase in capacity is over 20% which is above our initial hopes and we are confident that it will pay for itself in well under four years. “From the operator’s point of view, it is very similar to our previous saw and can be controlled via the touch-screen or a more traditional mouse which some of our team prefer. We create the jobs in Cabinet Vision and then send them via MagiCut from the office directly to the saw – it is all very straightforward, reliable and quick.”

FEATURE THEY DO WHAT THEY SAY THEY ARE GOING TO DO “The communication with HOMAG is always good. If they say they will do something, you can rest assured it will be done. All the team are excellent at communicating and I really can’t say a bad word against them. “Although we always look at what alternative options are out there in the market, we are very happy with how HOMAG looks after us. What’s more, aside from their operational excellence, the new machines all have the same colour scheme and so they look very impressive when customers visit our facility. It gives them real confidence that they are
dealing with a truly professional business that invests in the very best technology available,” concludes David Anderson. If you would like a demonstration or more information on HOMAG’s SAWTEQ beam saws, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

INDUSTRY AAG EXPANDS RANGE OF SPECIALPURPOSE ROUTING/CUTTING TOOLS Two new additions to the range of special-purpose routing/cutting tools supplied by AAG via its CNCShop E-commerce Division comprise different versions of the latest solid carbide ‘0’ series of single-flute spiral tools manufactured by Amana. As with other special-purpose tools, they have been designed to accommodate applications for which standard spiral tools would be less effective in terms of cut quality and tool life expectancy.
These latest additions, which are likely to be expanded in the future, complement other special-purpose tools from AAG and in particular those used in the industrial woodworking, furniture production, joinery and panel processing sectors. Of special significance is the Marathon Compression Tool. This has been developed specifically for the processing of solid and particle woods (MDF) and double-sided laminates that are liable to fracture or fray when standard spiral tools are used.
Available in multiple sizes, configurations and routing/ cutting depth options, the ‘0’ series incorporates a proprietary carbide coating system that provides enhanced protection against tool deterioration caused by abrasion, erosion, galling and fretting. This ensures constant razorsharp cut edges and a superior mirror surface finish to the materials being processed, whilst minimising problems frequently encountered when standard spiral tools are employed.
The Marathon Compression Tool is available in a choice of diameters and lengths. It incorporates a special coating that provides extra protection to the cut edge of materials from the high temperatures generated during the routing/ cutting process. The upward/downward motion and special geometry of the tool ensures a perfect edge finish on the top and bottom of the material being processed – an attribute that is of particular significance when processing materials like melamine and associated double-sided laminates.
The Amana ‘0’ series of tools will process a wide range of disparate materials. Typically, these include aluminium and aluminium composites (ACM), non-ferrous metals such as stainless steel and alloys like brass and copper and foamed board formulations.
Other special-purpose tools within the wide range of general-purpose tools, spare parts, accessories and consumables supplied by AAG via its CNCShop Division include a Diamond Cutting Tool for acrylic and various plastics and a Long Reach Tool for the processing of foam and similar ‘soft’ materials that require a deeper cut capability.

CASE STUDY “RETURN ON INVESTMENT IN WOOD WASTE HEATER MUCH QUICKER THAN ANTICIPATED!” A manufacturer in Kent has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating. Cribbit Kitchens & Interiors in Ashford specialises in the manufacture and supply of kitchen, bedroom, bespoke storage and furniture products. Chris Fairbairn, Managing Director at Cribbit Kitchens & Interiors started to do some research into purchasing a wood waste heater, realising it could save the company money on waste disposal whilst providing free heating for his 2000 sq. ft workshop. Chris started talking to Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology about wood waste burner options, and decided that a WT5 with its double-pass heater exchange would be the best option for his company. However, it was his purchase of a new edge bander for the workshop that prompted him to place the order. Chris explains: “When the new edge bander was delivered, I was informed that it worked best in a warm room, not lower than 12 Degrees Celsius. At the time, there was no heating in the factory, so it gave me the incentive I needed to order the wood waste heater I’d been considering! It was an easy decision to make, as the business generates quite a lot of waste wood, including chipboard and MDF, in addition to the delivery pallets that we always needed to dispose of. Once I crunched the numbers, investing in a wood waste heater just made sense, as there was a good return on investment.” The heater was installed into Cribbit Kitchen & Interiors manufacturing unit by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers, who also fitted a summer heat dump to allow the wood waste heater to be used throughout the year, by sending the heat to atmosphere in the summer months. Chris says: “In hindsight, having now experienced life with a wood waste heater, I wish I’d ordered one sooner! The heater makes the workshop lovely and warm, and I’m saving hundreds of pounds each month on waste disposal bills. In fact, the return on investment in the wood waste heater was actually quicker than anticipated, so I’m really pleased we took the plunge and invested when we did. In addition, being able to instantly dispose of the waste helps keep the workshop tidier, rather than us having to store all the waste wood until it could be disposed of. The whole process has been hassle-free, from getting a quote to the installation and delivery. We would highly recommend the products and team at Wood Waste Technology!”

Kurt Cockroft says: “Whatever the primary reason for purchase – heat or waste disposal, a wood waste heater is a cost effective and productive solution for companies that generate waste wood, and some companies get payback on the investment in less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision-engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

PROFILE NEW RANGE OF SCM MACHINING CENTRES FOR SOLID WOOD SCM is changing the “rules of the game” for machining doors, windows, stairs and solid wood elements. At the heart of the new accord 500 and accord 600 models and the upgrade of the morbidelli m200 lies the need for customers to regain control over their time, making significant gains in productivity while still achieving excellent quality on finishing According to Wood: behind the claim chosen by SCM for the launch of its new range of machining centres for solid wood, lies the meaning and value of a project called upon to launch a new era in machining doors, windows, stairs and much more. According to Wood describes SCM’s desire to provide a vast range of technical solutions that are even more effective and better performing, but above all “designed by wood” because they have technical specifications and performances that are fully in line with market challenges. At the same time, According also brings to mind accord: a long history of successes and know-how like that of SCM’s range of machining centres for drilling and routing, of the same name, and which has been a benchmark for the industry for over 15 years. The same range is now being expanded and renewed from a completely new and strategic point of view, to stay abreast of the times and to rightly value customers’ time, by optimising and speeding up production processes, while simultaneously guaranteeing excellent finishing quality. In fact, it has been time that has mostly led the revolution of SCM machining centres. Each technical feature is designed to save time at the most crucial stages for each industry manufacturer: from machine programming to set-up, from the machining process to maintenance. “Our aim was to give our customers, facing increasingly more complex problems when machining solid wood, an answer from specialists capable of finding precise solutions for each individual request. These new technologies considerably simplify the everyday work of operators, making it more efficient and, as a result, ensuring an even greater return on investment”, underlines SCM’s Business Manager for Machining centres, Bruno Di Napoli.

NEW ACCORD 500/600 MACHINING CENTRES SCM increases productivity by 30% compared to market standards thanks to the “gantry” structure with closed frame that, in continuity with the accord project, allows for sturdiness and precision to be achieved even at maximum advancement speed and with the most difficult machining jobs. The routing speed is further increased and now exceeds 15 metres per minute with the new 5-axis KPX machining unit with Hiteco 17 kW electro-spindle, designed to always allow the most complex operations to be carried out rapidly and accurately. Even the production cycle times are dramatically reduced with the exclusive BRC-S unit, that is even more flexible and compact and allows you to complete all the cutting, routing and drilling machinings typical of window components. Another significant new entry is the more than 100 tools readily available and easily ready for use with the new Caddy 35 storage, unique both for its capacity as well as its structure because it is integrated into the machining centre without increasing the machine’s bulk. Tool management is further optimised and simplified by the new Maestro Power TMS software, integrated with SCM’s Maestro suite. Thanks to this program that maximises the ability of the storage and optimises programming, there is no need for the operator to waste time and energy in looking for the most suitable tool: the software will identify and indicate the tool’s exact position in the storage thus minimising machining times. Cleaning the surrounding area is another crucial matter when machining solid wood and, in order to deal with the problem, SCM has devised a new shavings conveyor automatically positioned in accordance with the machining program, that can ensure maximum suction efficiency under any condition.
PROFILE
A RANGE, GREATER DEMAND The According to Wood project is offered to the market with a range that fully satisfies the various production needs. Accord 500 combines tradition, simplicity and compactness, without sacrificing high technology: Ultimate power, for wood applications, developed by the new 5-axis machining unit with 17 kW electro-spindle and the possibility of choosing a Pro-Space configuration without perimeter protection, that is ideal for those who do not have a great deal of space available. Accord 600 is the project solution that involves no compromising on performance: with a view to reducing production times as much as possible in any application field, it offers a completely new, hyper-performing machining unit fitted with as many as 3 separate units. The 4-axis and JQX 5-axis electro-spindles, respectively from 21 to 13.5 kW with separate on-board storages, allow for tool change while the machine is running and even during machining of the separate front unit, with BSC-S or head to drill, as required. All aimed at saving time, which is the absolute key concept throughout the entire range. THE UPGRADE OF THE MORBIDELLI M200 “ALL-IN-ONE TECHNOLOGY” MACHINING CENTRE The morbidelli m200 range, benchmark for CNC machining centres across the globe, confirms its technical features as the most popular on the market, like its solid structure, its 250 mm component passage, its Prisma KT 5-axis and the FlexMatic table that ensures that not only all kinds of machining for panels can be achieved but also those for solid wood. This machining centre has now been enhanced with new features that are ideal especially for the production of window elements.
Cycle time reduction with the FlexMatic table that becomes even more flexible with its movements that are made simultaneously under the control of SCM’s Maestro CNC software. As well as this, the performance of the piece-gripping system has been further enhanced thanks to the MULTIGRIP clamp, designed to specifically machine elements for windows and doors, that allow the work pieces to be positioned and blocked faster and more reliably. Important new entries for the JQX machining unit that is enhanced by an innovative shavings conveyor specifically designed to achieve maximum cleaning even in the presence of significant removals. This is controlled by NC not only in rotation, following the machining direction, but also in vertical position: this means the conveyor can always position itself directly in front of the jet of shavings to capture it as effectively as possible. Confirming the focus on the world of windows and doors, even on the morbidelli m200, we find the new BRC-S unit that allows for horizontal blade cuts and drilling and routing to be achieved as quickly as possible, leaving the 5-axis spindle with just the main profiling and tenoning operations to do. Scm Group is the global leader in technologies for machining a wide range of materials: wood, plastic, glass, stone, metal, composite materials and industrial components. Across the globe, the group’s companies act as highly reliable partners to leading industries in a wide range of product sectors, from furniture to construction, automotive to aerospace, and yachting to plastic machining. Scm Group coordinates, supports and develops a system of industrial excellence in 3 large, highly specialised production centres in Italy and it operates on all 5 continents.

INDUSTRY INSULATED BUS BARS FORMED WITHOUT COATING DAMAGE THANKS TO NEW APPROACH TO BENDING William Hughes Group announces that it has perfected a method of composing and forming complex automotive electric vehicle (EV) bus bar geometries out of pre-coated copper stock; and can do so in such a way that the insulation/protective cover remains completely viable along the length of the bar. Traditionally, bus bars are stamped and bent, but stamping cannot always deliver the features required to navigate around the under-bonnet complexity of new-generation EVs. For this reason, bending machines are a far better proposition. “Battery advances and high voltages mean that bus bars are just as at home under the bonnet as they are in a control cabinet backplane,” explains Emma Burgon, Engineering Director at William Hughes. “But automotive applications are not quite as smooth sailing as their significantly less complex industrial peers. As well as electrical insulation, the copper has to be protected from Mother Nature too, which is why the efficacy of the insulation covering is so important.” The development has been driven by the relative ease with which straight copper bar stock can be more easily coated than bar that has already been shaped. But it is possible to over stress the coating and cause stretches and cracks if the material is bent too far or too tightly. For this reason, significant research and development efforts were

expended on formulating the capabilities and limits of the materials and the processes. Using bending machines, the minimum bend radius for the high edge is approximately the same as the material’s height, while the minimum radius for the small edge is approximately the same as the material’s thickness. 90° twisting is also possible for confined areas where a bend could be problematic. In all instances, William Hughes can work with customers to help define the material cross section, the bend radii, the curve forms and the geometry possibilities based on the installation space. “As a market leader in springs and wire forms, with many customers in the automotive industry, EV bus bars were a natural evolution of our capabilities,” Burgon explains. “We spotted the market requirement for this a few years back and, never being one to shy away from innovation and new markets, we started developing the process and procedures based on the technologies we had in-house. Additional capital assets have since boosted these capabilities, and we are now in a very strong position to serve the needs of the global EV market.”

THE BEST IN EXCLUSIVE ITALIAN DESIGN Much has been written about the difficulties in securing materials, with demand significantly outstripping supply. However, while stocks of items like timber are under pressure, there is one part of the market that seems to be doing well; decorative laminates and melamine faced boards. LAMINATES VS MELAMINES Both laminates and melamines are made up of layers of decorative paper that are glued together, before undergoing heat and pressure treatment. The main difference is the number of layers and the specifics around the treatment process for each product.
30
www.p-j-production.com
A High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) is made up of 6-8 layers that have been impregnated with resin, and then heated and fused together. These layers include colour, pattern and a protective surface, resulting in a hardwearing product that is durable and highly scratch and chemical resistant. Perfect for high traffic and impact areas, HPL’s are available in sheets and can be applied to other structures, such as panels and furniture. A melamine on the other hand is a Low-Pressure Laminate (LPL), and only has one or two layers of paper. These also undergo a heat and pressure-based process but are attached to a backing or substrate, for example a piece of MDF or chipboard. This means that the product is ready to use as soon as it arrives. Both are easy to maintain and hardwearing, making them a perfect solution for interior design.
INDUSTRY STYLES AND FINISHES TO SUIT ANY PROJECT The advantage of laminates and melamines is that they are available in a wide range of styles and surface finishes, providing great design choice and flexibility whatever the project. For those looking for something premium and built to last, XyloCleaf is top of the list. Available exclusively through Lathams in the UK, the XyloCleaf range comprises melamine faced panels, laminates, and complimentary edgings. The unique Thermo Structured surface means the resulting deep textures and intricate detail makes it difficult to distinguish XyloCleaf from the real material it is designed to mimic Designed and manufactured in Milan, there are over 50 different colours and textures in the range. For furniture makers and woodworkers, it offers an opportunity to enhance the materials that they are working with and add an exceptional finishing touch. With colours ranging from light champagne through to dark woods, and texture options such as stone, linen, metallic and woodgrain effects, there really is something suitable for any environment. PROFILE CHEMIQUE ADHESIVES DELIVERS SOLUTIONS FOR UK TRAILER MANUFACTURER Since its establishment in 1985, Chemique Adhesives has been a leader in the development of high performance industrial adhesives and adhesive application equipment for a variety of industry sectors and applications. The company has always been committed to supporting its customers by using its expertise to analyse their requirements in detail, and offer solutions exactly matched to their needs. These were some of the reasons that FG Trailers, a manufacturer of custom-built trailers based in the North East of England, originally approached Chemique Adhesives. FG Trailers design and manufacture bespoke mobile shower trailers for use in decontamination and the event industry. Until recently the company were outsourcing their panel production, however due to their sustained growth and expanding business, they decided to take full control of the production process and create a manufacturing operation in house. “Chemique Adhesives is a well-known name within our industry, and not only that but they also supplied our existing panel manufacturer, so it was a given as to who I needed to contact” explained Paul Nash, Owner of FG Trailers. “Their extensive knowledge of the panel industry meant that they were able to recommend the right adhesive and application equipment for our exact requirements.” “After speaking with Paul, it was clear that a degree of semi-automation was required for making the panels and so we trialed our portable dispense unit in conjunction with a two component polyurethane adhesive from our Solfre range,” said Justin Clark, Chemique Adhesives Business Development Manager.
This was the ideal solution for FG Trailers as not only were both the adhesive and equipment provided by a sole supplier but it also meant that the correct ratio of adhesive was dispensed from the machine, eliminating the need of manual mixing and avoiding human error, which, in turn reduces waste and provides a much cleaner and user friendly application. The adhesive used with the portable dispense unit is Solfre2 – a two component, solvent-free polyurethane product. Solfre2 is suitable for a variety of applications such as construction panels, truck building, caravan panels and many similar uses where a permanent structural bond is required. Its unique formulation provides superior resistance to chemicals, heat, humidity and thermal shock. “I’m very pleased with the adhesive and equipment that was recommended by Chemique”, continued Paul. “Not only this, but they also provided sound technical advice and Justin fully understood our requirements from the start and was able to offer a tailored solution to suit our needs, which has worked out really well for us”. Chemique Adhesives’ Total Service Package includes tailormade adhesive solutions combined with full engineering and technical support. A team of engineers are on hand to provide regular servicing and support in case of any breakdowns or issues, which can be dealt with quickly and efficiently.

FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR FEBRUARY’S W EXHIBITION With the onset of Autumn, we edge nearer to the return of the UK’s flagship event for the manufacturing and joinery industries. When the W Exhibition opens its doors at the NEC in February (6 - 9 ) 2022, it will mark the first event to bring the industry back together since 2018.
exhibiting and many brand leaders remaining committed to the industry’s flagship event.”
Ahead of its much anticipated return, we catch up with Nickie West, MD of the Design & Build division at Montgomery Group, owners of W Exhibition, to find out what is happening behind the scenes in the six month run up to the show.
“We have maintained constant communication with our stakeholders in order to move everyone over to the new February dateline as seamlessly as possible. Alongside this, we have also expanded our team and invested in new talent to ensure that we have the right expertise on board to deliver a forward-thinking and innovative event that meets the needs of the industry.
It’s been a while since we last caught up with you, how has the industry reacted to the new February 2022 dates? “It’s certainly been a challenging few months with lots of uncertainty surrounding the UK events industry. However, with the ongoing successful rollout of the vaccine and the resilience of our community, we are on track to return to the NEC with the same award-winning formula that the industry expects from the show. “Over the last 18 months, companies have still been innovating and investing in new product development, this, coupled with having no platform to physically showcase these products since 2018, mean that the W Exhibition will come at a crucial time for the industry. We’re excited to bring everyone back together and create a space for the industry to reconnect following the pandemic. “We, like most companies, have faced challenges over the last few months. But we are still receiving strong levels of support from the industry with new brands enquiring about

WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN FOCUSING ON BEHIND THE SCENES TO ENSURE THAT W EXHIBITION COMES BACK WITH A BANG?
“We are developing partnerships with new trade bodies, associations and training providers in order to attract new talent into the event, and industry as a whole. New talent is something that we will be majoring on for 2022 and beyond. The appetite for joinery and furniture making is at an alltime high and we will be capitalising on this wave to shine a spotlight on the amazing young talent across the industry with initiatives such as our ‘30 Under 30’ campaign and ‘W Exhibition Apprentice of the Year’. WHY SHOULD THE W EXHIBITION BE AN ESSENTIAL FIXTURE IN PEOPLE’S CALENDAR FOR 2022? “First and foremost, it’s long overdue! With no industry event since 2018, it’s time to get back together and reconnect. If you are a brand looking to engage the market, there is no more powerful platform than an exhibition. And for visitors,
EVENT
if you are looking for the latest products and innovations, want to upskills and make those all-important connections to do better business both now and in the future - you can do all of this under one roof at the W Exhibition. “Secondly, I would urge people to support their flagship event. W Exhibition would not be the success that it is today without the support of every corner of our industry. We’ve been doing lots of work behind the scenes to improve our proposition to ensure that the show delivers what people want and need. There will be so many new things to see, running machinery and live demonstration, plus lots of new and fresh and exciting content to learn from.” WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT FROM THE W EXHIBITION IN FEBRUARY 2022? “Historically, the W Exhibition has been dominated by a small number of large brands occupying lots of space on the floorplan. However, this model has often left visitors with
fewer opportunities to see new and emerging brands who arguably have just as much to offer. We’ve been working hard to address the balance between the brands that are exhibiting - alongside the brand leaders, our visitors can expect to see lots of new and exciting companies who will be making their W Exhibition debuts . “After an extended period of restricted face-to-face business we hope that the entire industry will share in our enthusiasm at getting back to doing what we do best. The W Exhibition & Elements is the UK’s flagship event for the joinery and furniture making industry and we are excited to showcase all of the latest products and machinery when we return in February 2022.”

INDUSTRY OHRA CANTILEVER RACKS FOR BOIS DU POITOU 2 PLUS 2 MAKES THREE TIMES THE STORAGE CAPACITY
EXPANSION INTO THE THIRD DIMENSION
The French building materials trader Bois Du Poitou has modernised its existing warehouse for timbers and panels at its headquarters in Soudan: Instead of storing the wooden goods on the floor as before, they are now directly accessible in two double-sided as well as two single-sided cantilever racks from OHRA. Bois Du Poitou can thus make much better use of the existing building, significantly reduce access times to goods and triple the storage capacity.
Therefore, the company decided to say goodbye to the concept of floor storage and to store the goods in cantilever racks. For this purpose, OHRA erected two rows of doublesided racking, each about 40 metres long and seven metres high. It’s 1,200mm long cantilever arms, each with a load capacity of 800kgs form seven storage levels and thus effectively expand the storage space into the third dimension. Two single-sided cantilever racks with four storage levels along the walls of the building complement the free-standing racking rows.
TOO LITTLE CAPACITY, TOO MUCH EFFORT Bois Du Poitou has built its own warehouse for the storage of squared timber, cladding, panels, and other wooden products. But despite a size of 1,500 square metres, the storage capacity was no longer sufficient due to the floor storage. In addition, the handling of the stored wood was labour-intensive and cost a lot of time. At the same time, the goods were repeatedly damaged in the process.
BOIS DU POITOU Founded in 1987 in Soudan, Bois Du Poitou offers a wide range of building materials for both private builders and professionals. It includes various woods - from fir to oak to exotic woods - for example for joinery needs as well as insulation materials, flooring, doors, or garden furniture.
A NEW KIND OF STORAGE Racking has not only allowed Bois Du Poitou to triple its indoor storage capacity, but also significantly improve inventory visibility. The fact that the goods can now be removed directly with the sideloader and that there is no longer any need for repositioning has minimised damage to the goods. The times required for storage and retrieval have also been significantly reduced - so the overall efficiency in the warehouse processes has been improved and customers can be served more quickly. “OHRA’s cantilever racking means a new way of storage for us - with higher quantity and better quality,” says Valentin Ouvrard from Bois Du Poitou.

AJB’s talented youthful workforce are like a breath of fresh air bringing life into their product range and they believe this is “where timber meets perfection”. They continue to strive forward with modern methods of manufacturing combined with advance technology which creates the hub to their success. In the woodworking industry the mitred corner has always been recognised as a sign of high value and quality, especially in door production. The joints, when finished using the Hoffmann Key offer strength, durability and stability whilst the process of production offers simplicity and speed. AJB found all of these attributes in both the Hoffmann MS40 SF Double Mitre Saw and the Hoffmann
PP2-H-DB Pneumatic Dovetail Routing and Dowel Boring Machine. The perfect combination in the fabrication of their doorframes. The Hoffmann MS40 SF double mitre saw is designed to simultaneously cut one left and one right hand mitre with each machining cycle. Accurate, repeatable mitre cuts are achieved in a variety of materials, including hard and softwoods, wood related materials (MDF, plywood, particleboard), plastics and non-ferrous metals such as aluminium. The heavy-duty design of the saw heads and precision machined components as well as the use of industrial quality carbide tipped saw blades assures perfect cuts with no burrs or tear out. The ideal double mitre saw for small and large shops when accurate and efficient mitre cutting is required. The Hoffmann PP2-H-DB Pneumatic Dovetail Routing and Dowel Boring Machine is a freestanding version specifically designed for mitred corner production. The machine cycle begins by pressing the foot pedal. The work piece is clamped pneumatically and the unit’s router the dovetail slots and drill the dowel holes. The work piece is then released. The joint is completed using Dowels and Hoffmann Keys W1/2/3/4.

CASE STUDY HED//STAIR SYSTEMS USES A COMBINATION OF ALPHACAM & CABINET VISION TO MANUFACTURE A RANGE OF CUSTOMISED PROJECTS As the son and grandson of carpenters, Rob Jones was practically born to be a woodworker — a profession that, as he tells it, entails “spending the first couple of years learning how to do it and the rest of your life fixing your mistakes.”
had reservations about making drastic changes to his production process.
Characteristically down-to-Earth and passionate about his work, Jones has owned Stair Systems of Modesto, California, for 27 years. Highly custom projects, including complex millwork, are par for the course at Stair Systems, which, as its name suggests, builds at least one thing that most of its competition does not.
“Less than 12 months ago, the machine and software landed on my floor at the shop, and we got Internet for the first time at the shop,” he says. “We never used any software up to that point to make our products. We were very nervous and intimidated by this strange contraption that we now had, and we had to continue our workload and find a way to change at the same time. Every day, driving to work, I had this anxiety and I didn’t know if I was really afraid or super excited. My 25-year veteran quit during this process and we pressed on without him.”
“We go from the lowest end to the highest end, and we offer some services that other companies don’t — including stairs,” says Jones. In addition to stairs, the shop builds cabinets, interior trim, such as wainscoting and molding, custom millwork, and some light furniture. Despite his steady success, Jones knew that he’d need to evolve to remain on top of his game and implemented CNC machinery and software in 2017. “I made the decision that, if we were going to keep doing cabinets, we would have to do them in a competitive way — and that’s with CNC machinery and software,” Jones says. “If you don’t go with CNC in this industry, I believe that in the next 10 years you won’t be in business.” After researching his options, Jones purchased the Cabinet Vision Screen-to-Machine™ (S2M) Center and the Alphacam computer-aided-manufacturing (CAM) solution. Once he understood how to harness the new power at his fingertips, Jones significantly increased his production. “I realize that there is so much that I can do with the machine and the software, and that two or three guys can make as much as 10 guys with CNC,” says Jones, who initially
Ryan Wolfe, who joined Stair Systems in 2017, is familiar with Cabinet Vision and will become increasingly productive with the software once the shop has a network license. Network licenses allow multiple users to work on the same jobs and easily share information, which streamlines workflow and eliminates duplicating tasks. “With the CNC, you can have three projects going at once,” Wolfe says. “When the machine is running, that’s like having another person here.” He finds Cabinet Vision especially helpful in visually communicating job details, which is ideal when working with staff who are still learning the trade. The system helps Austyn Allum, who is new to woodworking and has been with the company for just a few months, easily grasp job details and understand construction methods. “What’s nice is I can get in there and look at how Rob assembled something, or see aesthetically what he’s trying to achieve,” Wolfe says. “He can tell me what he wants and I can build it in my mind, but now I can actually pull it up and show Austyn what it will look like — and the whole team can get together and pull it up visually.” To begin a job in Cabinet Vision, the dimensions of the room in which the project will be installed are typically entered into the system manually. However, Jones went a step further after purchasing the two solutions and acquired the Leica Disto S910, a laser distance-measuring tool by Leica Geosystems that is linked with Cabinet Vision.

CASE STUDY the highest level, and it allows you to be very specialized. The software is like an open set of doors and, if you walk through those doors, you can do anything.”
The direct link between the Leica S910 and Cabinet Vision allows Jones to take room measurements that are then imported into the software. Following import, Cabinet Vision generates room layouts based on the data. “It does 3D pointto-point measuring and gives you the layout of the whole room,” Jones says. “The measuring software generates a full 3D rendering and makes it so much easier.” As all projects begin with sales, being able to visually represent the job can make all the difference when dealing with customers. Jones, who works with a mixture of contractors, architects and homeowners, uses Cabinet Vision to showcase the final result. “I usually try to sit in the room with them with my laptop and draw them something in Cabinet Vision,” Jones says. “If you can visually show somebody something quickly, and with honesty, you’re probably going to get the job quickly. We’re all very visual; that’s when they pull the trigger, because they want to actually see these things.” Jones tackles his projects with a combination of Cabinet Vision and Alphacam, with the former used for cabinetry jobs and the latter for jobs that require the production of complex profiles. For instance, Jones recently programmed 200 linear feet of wainscoting with complicated cutouts in Alphacam, and also used the solution to produce a set of mirrored barn doors in MDF that feature intricate cutouts. Each door is two pieces — front and back — glued together, with dadoes cut into the back to hold the mirrors, and cutouts in the front partially overlaying the mirrors. While Stair Systems produces goods in a range of qualities, American-made plywood and dovetail drawer boxes are company production standards, from low-end to high-end. “All drawer boxes are now dovetails because it’s so easy to do with Cabinet Vision. I can make dovetail drawer boxes that are up to four feet by eight feet,” Jones says. “Cabinet Vision is so good you can easily take it to the low level or to
Cabinet Vision enables Jones to save his projects and completely reuse them, or reuse elements of existing projects without having to redraw them. The solution includes a library that is helpful for both automating and standardizing certain job elements, as well as for eliminating repetitive tasks. “The project is always in the system, which makes it easier to make changes and allows you to reduce costs.” Likewise, Cabinet Vision’s parametric capabilities enable Jones to pull designs from his library, apply them to new jobs, and easily adjust them for size. Parametric functions are especially useful for jobs that are similar or identical in every aspect except for size. “I can make a dovetail drawer in any size because it’s parametric and, because Cabinet Vision is controlling every portion of the part, the final cut is perfectly square. I can’t create that with a table saw. When I put the drawer in a cabinet, it’s perfectly flush — and I never see that.” Jones uses Cabinet Vision’s nesting engine to maximize material yield, and has created a material schedule to easily manage his offerings. He also uses the system’s “grainmatch” function, which ensures that parts are cut, such as stacked cabinet doors, with coordinating grain. Next on Jones’s list is to start using Cabinet Vision for his bids. “I really want to start using the bid feature to take the emotion out of quoting,” he says. “A lot of times we bid emotionally, when we think we really need a job, but this will let me know exactly what it will cost to do the job.” Jones doesn’t know how much time he’s saved by implementing CNC machinery and software because he’s also implemented new standards. “I don’t know how long all of this would take me without the Cabinet Vision because I couldn’t repeat this without it,” he says. “There is just absolutely no comparison.” With his fears alleviated and nearly a year of experience in CNC production under his belt, Jones has the confidence to further increase output. “Now we’re going to take the machinery and software and double what we did this first year,” Jones says. “I used the resources made available to me through Cabinet Vision to learn a new way. I relied on their people and services to navigate my way through uncharted waters. “One of the biggest fears a cabinet maker has is starting over with a completely new process. We all know how to make cabinets, but to let go and trust the process sometimes feels like I’m being untrue to my craft or leaving something that works well. Today I can tell you that the decision to switch has been the decision that is true to my craft.”

CASE STUDY HI-MACS ® CAPTURES THE ORIGINS OF MICHELIN STARRED CHEF IN MALLORCA El Txoko de Martín, the first post-pandemic project launched by chef with the most Michelin stars on the Spanish culinary scene, is opening in Palma de Mallorca with an affordable fine dining experience in a unique 600 m2 space with multiple nods to Berasategui’s Basque origins.
Sublime, the Group Concord company in Mallorca tasked with designing the murals, explains the sublimation process performed on HI-MACS® as a complicated technique, by which digital prints were transferred in a gaseous state to the solid surface, by applying controlled pressure and heat in special kilns.
The new restaurant El Txoko de Martín was inaugurated just in time for summer 2021, determined to leave the difficult months of the pandemic behind. This new gastronomic venue features decorations in which wood, iron, stone and ceramic details play an important role. The most striking feature of the restaurant includes three large murals, made by the Mallorcan firm Sublime using HI-MACS® solid surface, which capture a variety of sports disciplines, two of which originated in the Basque Country.
Sublime’s vast experience with sublimation techniques ensured that the final images would be completely incorporated into the material, making the artwork resistant, durable and suitable for places with heavy traffic. HI-MACS® offers a number of additional advantages that provided added value to the end result. It is a completely smooth surface without pores, which guarantees the perfect integration of the dye. The seamless material gives a superbly hygienic finish, as well as simplifying cleaning, along with a high level of resistance and durability when in public areas like a hospitality venue.
The original concept for this project sought to create a space where diners could revel in traditional yet innovative cuisine with the Berasategui stamp, but also where they could enjoy spending time with friends and family in a close, warm atmosphere. In Basque, the chef’s first language, “txoko” means “nook.” In bringing that concept to his new restaurant, Berasategui wanted to share a little slice of his homeland with Mallorcans, by establishing a little “nook” in Palma where they could savour a variety of delicacies from the Basque Country and where they could soak up Basque traditions in good company. Of course, the venue’s design had to live up to the quality of products and service offered there, so three murals were devised, to be installed in different parts of the restaurant. The images capture three sports: traditional Basque rowing, Basque pelota and soccer, in honour of Berasategui’s athletic, multidisciplinary youth in his native land. These murals, which draw visitors’ eyes as soon as they step inside, were produced on HI-MACS® natural acrylic stone, in Alpine White, by complex, skilful sublimation work.
“There are very few materials that can be moulded to resemble tiles, and that are capable of receiving the heat transfer of an image within their structure,” notes Juan Chito, Sublime’s designer, in reference to the properties of HI-MACS®. Regarding the final rendering and how the technique was combined with the material, he adds that, “the convex sides and the application of a layer of epoxy resins on the face achieved the cracked, distorted effects we were looking for in this decorative project.” With these murals on a par with the quality of Berasategui’s cuisine, the restaurant’s interior also stands out for its modern yet cosy decorations: the rustic textures in warm hues create a comfortable, cosmopolitan ambiance. The location in Santa Catalina, the old fishing district and present-day hot spot, inspired an interior design that is respectful of the tradition and history of this iconic neighbourhood. Berasategui’s love of Mallorca with his Basque origins, at El Txoko de Martín, means pride of place is given to the wood used in the ceilings, decorative details in natural colours like greens and blues, and the frames on the walls containing photos of the chef’s family and the restaurant where he was born and raised. With a capacity for 200 guests and a space divided between a main room, a private dining area and pavement seating, the new restaurant in Mallorca with the Berasategui seal promises to become the ultimate meeting place for food and relaxation, with traditional yet innovative cuisine and a space brimming with tradition and celebrating the chef’s origins. www.himacs.eu
