Blum Ends The Financial Year With A Turnover Of 2.3 Billion Euros
Austrian fittings manufacturer maintains stable turnover compared to the previous year
The Blum Group recorded a total of 2,297.16 million euros in turnover from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024, equating to a reduction of 27,3 million euros compared to the previous year. Philipp Blum, Managing Director of the Blum Group, comments on the background to this: “The first few months of the last financial year were challenging for us and the industry as a whole. However, there were some positive signs in the second half of the year and we are noticing improvements, even though the market environment remains challenging. The cost of raw materials, energy and staff in particular is currently very high.” End users are also feeling the effects of inflation and associated price increases, they are more cautious about investments and think twice about new purchases. This is resulting in a slight decline in the level of equipment in kitchens, which in turn has an impact on fittings manufacturers. Managing Director Martin Blum, however, also sees this as an opportunity: “This difficult market situation prompts us to really address our customers’ needs. We have 9,294 employees around the world all working together to keep Blum moving forwards and inspire our customers with innovative products.”
Blum’s innovative strength also remained unchanged. With 82 new applications, Blum came second in the rankings of the Austrian Patent Office in 2023. The company’s innovation efforts are not only
aimed at satisfying customer requirements but also meeting the latest design trends.
In April, new kitchen ideas were once again showcased at EuroCucina in Milan, one of the key trade fairs for kitchens – and some of these ideas were brought to life using Blum products. It was striking, for example, how power integrated furniture is becoming more and more important. Blum is currently developing its solution for the electrification of furniture: AMPEROS AC. This will allow lighting, chargers or other electrical appliances to be used in and on moving furniture parts, such as in drawers, in the future. Another Eurocucina highlight was the presentation of the REVEGO pocket system by Blum customers.
Blum’s various box systems were also a popular choice. Customers with a focus on design presented LEGRABOX, with its endless opportunities for creativity and customisation. If the spotlight was on functionality and easy manufacturing, customers went for MERIVOBOX, a single platform with a multitude of options and all with the same assembly process. And some customers highlighted efficiency with the tried and tested TANDEMBOX box system. Blum has compiled further information about the latest trends from EuroCucina in a trend report, which can be found at www.blum. com/explores

“Best Return On Investment From Any Piece Of Equipment The Company Has Ever Purchased.” INDUSTRY
A UK furniture manufacturer has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on heating and waste disposal costs.
SylvanWorks specialises in bespoke furniture and joinery. When the company moved into its current 16000 sq. ft modern industrial unit, there was no heating in the premises. That’s when company director, Gareth Langdon realised that an investment in a wood waste heater would provide free heating whilst also reducing waste disposal costs.
Gareth liked the idea of being able to recycle the wood offcuts into energy, rather than disposing of them into skips to go to landfill. There was also the added benefit that the wood waste burner would provide free heating to the workshop, so the business could stop using gas heaters in the cold months, which were expensive to run. After speaking with Kurt Cockroft at Wood Waste Technology, Gareth ordered a WT15 heater that was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers.
Gareth says: “I’m delighted with the wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. It provides precisely the benefits advertised and works so well. Whoever arrives at work first in the morning gets the fire going, and then the
workspace heats up really quickly. I would recommend any company producing wood waste to consider investing in one. It has provided the best return on investment from any piece of equipment the company has ever purchased. Everyone here is happy with it, as it keeps us all warm and saves a lot of money.”
MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We are so pleased that SylvanWorks are saving money on heating and waste disposal with the wood waste heater. It is a hugely worthwhile investment, as some companies can experience payback on a wood waste heater in less than 12 months!“
Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.
In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

Zero Set, One Pass, Twice The
Profit: The Future Of UK Window And
Door Manufacturing
The Lignum tooling system was developed by Leitz Tooling and The Joinery Network as a solution designed to reduce barriers to entry in window and door production by reducing startup costs and helping to tackle industry challenges such as a skills shortage, rising manufacturing costs and most importantly, helping joiners overcome new and stricter legislation such as PAS:24 2022. Manufacturers using the Lignum tooling system inherit both required and desired certifications by paying a license, such as energy efficiency ratings, suitability for new and restoration builds or the secure by design accreditation from the Police. As the only system of its kind across the country, window and door producers are moving over to the Lignum system to prepare for their futures.
Created with one thing in mind, productivity, the Lignum tooling system has been designed to maximise efficiency during window and door production on spindle moulders, CNC machinery and window lines. Leitz ProfilCut Q tooling features a lightweight aluminium body for reduced power consumption and a zero-set hight and diameter design,
so that no adjustments are needed to be made to the machinery between profile changes. Heavily reducing downtime from tool changes and making the system easy to use despite the growing skills gaps. Additionally, and unlike most UK tool manufacturers, Lignum window and door tools are all safety tested to the international standard BS EN847 and are accentuated with high-grade marathon coated carbide knives manufactured from the Leitz carbide factory, ensuring every cutting edge is tuned to the application to ensure maximum tool life and an outstanding finish quality. Leitz Marathon coated knives boast a 30% longer lifespan compared to standard tooling. This translates to fewer tool replacements, lower costs and reduced disruptions to production schedules. Allowing for a consistent and high quality finish.
Other than its intricate and innovative design, the tooling enables manufacturers to produce windows and doors at a faster rate whilst not sacrificing quality. Thanks to the precision carbide knives and built in chip breakers, the Lignum system provides finish cut quality in just one pass, minimising material wastage and lowering power consumption. This also means that joiners spend less time on the potential ‘bottleneck’ of sanding and spraying their workpiece. John Fanthorpe, the first joiner on the Lignum system shares his thoughts on its impact. “Firstly, the finish quality of the window tooling system has dramatically reduced our need to sand down or re work a project, meaning we can get straight to assembly and decorations like painting and the de-nibbing process has become shorter too. Since we adopted the Lignum tooling system, we have more than doubled our revenue since 2019”. The system has enabled joiners with smaller workshops to make up to 16 windows a day – a significant increase for the majority of these companies.
The Lignum window and door tooling also empowers manufacturers to compete effectively in both new build and conservation projects. This versatility stems from several key advantages that manufacturers will inherit from the tooling
system. Thanks to our rigorous testing process, all Lignum products are tested for the current building regulations L, M, Q and Weathertightness. This means all Lignum products are suitable for new build and conservation work, allowing manufacturers to expand into new markets, growing their business. Gary Grange from DGM Joinery reflects on the impact Lignum has had on his business. “Lignum products have opened up the new build market for us and enhanced our business. We can now offer a full product range to new builds where previously we could not”. He also addressed concerns over changing legislation “without the Lignum system, we would not have PAS:24. The cost appears high, but joinery companies not following the current regulations may find that their demand decreases alongside new and more restrictive legislation.”
However, The Joinery Network isn’t just about the tooling system. The network itself offers a massive variety of support to manufacturers of timber windows and doors such as marketing support, technical support, hardware, financing, paint supply, timber supply and joinery software. The set up for Lignum manufacturing includes consultancy and operative training to help your team manufacture consistent superior products and optimise production efficiencies. Full technical drawings are available when signing up to the Lignum range and the Lignum marketing support pack includes a great quality retail brochure, specification datasheets and product imagery to help you sell more windows and doors. Guttman UK and Ireland have partnered with The Joinery Network so that now you can clad Lignum timber windows with their cladding systems such as the Gutmann Nordwin Classic range.
If you’re looking to improve your window and door production, enhance your profitability or streamline your manufacturing process, contact Leitz Tooling today to learn more about how this innovative system could reform your business.
Don’t miss out on this opportunity to be on the cutting edge of window and door production.

Michael Pepper Joinery Crafts A Bright Future With The Help Of HOMAG
Michael Pepper Joinery Ltd., a bespoke joinery manufacturer specialising in high-quality fire doors, has been a trusted name in the industry for no less than 50 years. They recently invested in HOMAG’s EDGETEQ S-380, an edge banding machine known for its flexibility and precision, which has played an essential role in the future-proofing of the business. Here’s the full story.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Based in Derby, Michael Pepper Joinery comprises a workforce of 33 highly-trained staff operating across three units totalling 13,000 square feet, delivering superior products to diverse sectors including Health, Commercial, Education, Leisure, Residential, and the Ministry of Defence.
Since 1973 the company has stayed true to its client-centric principles, taking pride in the quality of both its products and service. Half a century of experience has culminated in a wealth of knowledge, and Michael Pepper Joinery continues to go from strength to strength; in the last three years, turnover has tripled.
“We were seeking to push growth and really double-down on what we’re best at,” explains Josh Pepper, Managing Director at Michael Pepper Joinery. “This involved a focus on staff training, various efficiencies in the business, and of course investment in new advanced machinery – including a new edge banding machine.”
CHOOSING HOMAG: TRUST AND RELIABILITY
Michael Pepper Joinery’s journey with HOMAG began years ago with the acquisition of a 1998 HOMAG edge bander. “It was a great machine that served us very well, right up until the end of its lifecycle,” says Josh. “We have a lot of trust in HOMAG products – we also bought a brand new 4 axis CNC in 2021 – so it was an easy choice to stick with them when the time came to invest in a new edge bander.”
Another reason for sticking with HOMAG was the reliability of their service. As Josh explains, “Every door we make has to go through our edge banding machine. If the machine breaks down, it’s a big issue for us. Luckily with HOMAG you get the whole package, which includes outstanding support; should an issue arise, they work on resolving it as soon as possible – often on the same day.”
EDGETEQ S-380: THE PERFECT FIT
Now it was a matter of finding the perfect machine to suit the needs of the business. To that end, HOMAG held indepth discussions with Michael Pepper Joinery and sent a representative to assess their site. “One of the stand-out aspects of HOMAG is that they make every effort to get to know you as a business. This was best exemplified by our HOMAG Sales Manager, who I can’t praise highly enough. “He clearly knows the machinery inside out, and during his visit he spent a considerable amount of time exploring our needs. He didn’t just want to lump us with the most
expensive machine; he wanted to ensure we were getting the right machine. And that’s exactly what we ended up with. “Interestingly,” Josh continues, “The EDGETEQ S-380 has less functionality than our previous machine. But that’s the beauty of it; it gives us the exact functionality we need. Being able to get a machine that was so specific to our requirements saved us a lot of money, and plus it’s smaller, freeing up precious workshop space.”
CONFIDENCE, ACCURACY, RELIABILITY
The implementation of the EDGETEQ S-380 has been beneficial to Michael Pepper Joinery in a number of ways. Notably, the capabilities of the machine have enabled the company to take on more advanced, higher-paying jobs. “We can now do things with more confidence. There are jobs that before we probably would have turned down, but now actively look for, because we know the potential of the machine and we want to take full advantage of it.”
This is largely due to the sheer accuracy of the EDGETEQ S-380, which utilises rigid high-precision linear guides and perfectly coordinated units for a flawless finish. As Josh explains, “Accuracy is crucial to our work – the margin for error in edge banding is notoriously fine. This machine gets it right pretty much every time.”
Reliability is another significant benefit highlighted by Josh. “The edge banding machine is absolutely key to our operation; we literally wouldn’t be able to trade without it. It’s a good thing, therefore, that we can completely rely on the EDGETEQ S-380 to run seamlessly. It’s provided a whole new level of consistency which in itself will increase our production.”
CASE STUDY
TRAINING AND SUPPORT
Training on the new machine was conducted on-site, ensuring that the staff were well-equipped to handle the nuances of the EDGETEQ S-380. HOMAG’s non-automated support has been a breath of fresh air, with easy access to engineers and prompt on-site assistance when needed. “The fact you can talk to someone, an actual HOMAG engineer, when you need to is great. They do provide remote support, but if required someone will make the trip to our workshop without question. We know we’re in safe hands.”
LOOKING BACK – AND AHEAD
The partnership with HOMAG has not only provided Michael Pepper Joinery with a top-tier machine but also with a reliable and supportive business partner. As the business continues to grow, Josh looks forward to further collaborations with HOMAG. “Naturally, we have plans to continue growing, and there are more HOMAG machines we have our eye on that will align perfectly with the expansion of the business.”
Josh concludes, “I would definitely recommend HOMAG to others. Of course you should always do your own research, but I can say for sure the majority of woodworking businesses will find the perfect partner in HOMAG.”

Gopak Throws Some Shapes On The Factory Floor With Biesse Rover A Edge CASE STUDY
The installation of a new Rover A Edge 1632 at Gopak is proving that Biesse really does have the edge when it comes to the machining and edgebanding of intricate shapes. Since the new routing and edgebanding machine arrived at Gopak’s facility in May, the company has experienced a marked improvement in efficiency and finishing quality along with dramatic reductions in waste for its Enviro range of tables and benches.
For decades, Gopak has been furnishing business premises, classrooms, canteens, libraries, community centres and other spaces with tables, benches and chairs, made by the skilled manufacturing team at its Kent facility. The firm also makes Enviro tables and benches under licence and in recent years, this range has become increasingly popular with early learning establishments and primary schools. The appeal of this furniture, which comprises an unwelded aluminium frame and a corrugated core board with a laminated surface, lies in its high load bearing capacity and intricate shape options - daisies, keyholes, triangles and kidney shapes are all possible.
“In younger years education there is increasing emphasis on enhancing the learning experience through the environment. The Enviro range is ideal for this, as it offers scope for creating fun, appealing schemes with different themes, shapes and colours. In this context, the Enviro range is contributing an ever-increasing percentage of Gopak’s overall sales, so it was essential that we invested in this area to future-proof growth,” explains Gopak’s operations director, Damien Hickie.
Edgebanding is the most challenging aspect of manufacturing this type of furniture; a straight line edgebander cannot follow the contours, therefore a shaped edgebander is required. Up until that point, Gopak was relying on a 12-year old machine, but rework had reached an unacceptably high level.
“The quality of the joins was letting us down. We were having to remove and reapply one in every 20 edgebands because the closure wasn’t correct, which was costing us time and money,” explains Damien.
“BLOWN AWAY” BY BIESSE
Gopak visited the W Show at the NEC and admits to being “blown away” by the Rover A Edge on Biesse’s booth. The machine was equipped with Ray Force technology - a cuttingedge solution that uses infrared technology to apply shaped edges on panels without glue.
“We were blown away by what we saw. A Biesse representative explained the Ray Force system and we could see that this was a company at the forefront of machining technology. That got us thinking,” recalls Damien. Gopak obtained two quotes for comparison and asked both companies to provide samples.
“On some tables, we apply a 32mm edgeband on a 90 degree corner. The other company struggled to get a good finish on this - the samples they provided weren’t really acceptable, whereas the boards we sent to Biesse came back perfect,” says Damien.
Gopak was also impressed with the way in which the Biesse sales team handled the quotation.
“Usually, machine suppliers give you a price for everything you need plus everything you don’t and you have to wait ages for the actual quotation. Biesse’s sales team came to our site and we discussed what was required and which options were valuable. They didn’t try and oversell or ‘overspec’; they recommended a three-axis rather than a five-axis spindle, for example. They ‘built’ the machine specification during the meeting and supplied a quote there and then. That was an important selling point,” says Damien.
This discussion steered Gopak towards a Rover A Edge 1632 edgebanding CNC centre, which is capable of producing shaped, edgebanded panels on a single machine. Ray Force was pre-enabled on the machine so that Gopak has the option of adding this system at a later date. Gopak also opted for Biesse’s EPS (Electronic Positioning System) on the pod & rail machine, which provided a significant step up in efficiency versus the manual pod placement that was necessary with its incumbent CNC.
AUTOMATIC POD PLACEMENT
The EPS system is regarded as the market leading technology for automated table set-up.
EPS configures the whole working area in as little as 20 seconds, with the positioning of each pod and rail performed automatically by independent servo motors. This allows fast and accurate set-up and changeovers that help to improve productivity and reduce operator errors.
“On our other CNC, every time we want to process a different sized board, the operator has to move the pods manually, which is time consuming and introduces the risk of human error. With the EPS system, by the time the operator has fetched the next board, the pods have moved into the right position. This massively increases efficiency,” says Damien.
Gopak has also realised efficiency gains through the aggregate head for trimming and scraping, which delivers an immaculate finish so there is no need for secondary hand finishing.
“We were having to hand finish because the trimmer and scraper couldn’t achieve the final finish. This wasn’t ideal from an efficiency or a health & safety perspective. With the Biesse machine there is no hand finishing requirement and we are getting an improved finish,” says Damien.
In addition, the use of a rounding cutter to remove the excess material on 90 degree corners decreases cycle time.
IOT PLATFORM SUPPORTS RELIABILITY
With service support a key priority for Gopak, the preventative maintenance capabilities and dynamic part ordering system available through Biesse’s SOPHIA IoT platform were a major selling point.
“As we make to order, it is really important that we do not let customers down. With previous machines we have had breakdowns and had to wait four days for a response. SOPHIA proactively identifies any potential issues rather than waiting until something fails, giving us confidence that the machine is being monitored,” says Damien.
He adds: “SOPHIA also incorporates a part ordering system that is directly related to the machine’s serial number, so our maintenance manager can go into the parts system and instantly cost and order any part applicable to our machine model. This makes spare parts ordering so much more streamlined.”
A visit to Biesse’s factory in Pesaro, Italy, for final acceptance tests, reassured Gopak that the decision to invest in the Rover A Edge was the right one.
“The factory ran like clockwork and everyone who worked there just oozed passion,” enthuses Damien.
A TOP JOB
A week later, the machine was delivered to Gopak’s premises in Hythe, Kent, and is now up and running, producing tops. As part of the installation, Biesse provided three expert engineers to commission the machine and deliver training.
“This ensured that the router was set up to our exact specification, and that our Enviro team are empowered with an in-depth understanding of how to programme the machine,” he says.
The new machine is running alongside Gopak’s existing CNCedgebander and is already boosting output and reducing waste.
“Producing table and bench tops of perfect quality and finish every time has led to a significant reduction in the number of tops being rejected in the manufacturing process. Previously we were having to rework one in 20. Since installing the Rover A Edge, our scrap analysis has shown the machine has produced no waste whatsoever. We are made up with the quality of the joins. Having used an alternative edge banding machine for over ten years it is clear that the Biesse Rover A really does have the edge”, says Damien.
Fercell - From Production Waste To Biomass Fuel
With plans to implement a waste handling facility, a luxury yacht manufacturer installed a biomass system to generate energy from their production waste. Consisting of mixed wood-based materials, including large sheets of skeletal waste from various CNC machining centres, they were looking to easily and effectively convert their waste into a uniform product, which could be easily transported and used within their biomass system.
Fercell was consulted on the specification of a plant design best suited for their application, which ultimately resulted in Fercell being awarded the contract for a complete turnkey installation.
The system, consisting of a 2-metre wide shredder, outfeed conveyor, a series of loading conveyors and an air-handling system was designed to fit within a plant room and operate between the plant room and an externally sited biomass boiler (with storage silo) and an adjacent canopied trailer loading bay.
WOOD SHREDDING & DUST EXTRACTION
In operation, waste wood is placed in a waste compound in palletised piles, from where it is taken by telehandler and loaded directly into the hopper of the WEIMA WL20 shredder.
Due to the extended length of some of the skeletal waste, the shredder was supplied with a bespoke, oversized hopper with a pivot point designed to feed the material directly into the shredder’s cutters. In addition, due to the requirements to minimise dust emissions from the process, the shredder hopper was equipped with a retractable roof and multiple suction points, which in turn are connected to a centralised ducting system serviced by an F320 compact dust filtration system.
Along with controlling the fine airborne particles from the process, the F320 filter system is safe for operation in confined spaces classified as potentially explosive with the addition of both ATEX explosion relief panels and an automatic H20 sprinkler system. Collection and removal of the extracted dust is safe and clean thanks to the negatively pressurised collection bins with removable plastic liners.
The WL20 processes material via WEIMA’s preparatory patented ‘V’ rotor through an interchangeable screen, which grades the shred until it’s small enough to pass through. After shredding, the material drops onto a swan-neck belt conveyor equipped with automatic ferrous metal separation, with any tramp metal removed into a tipping skip at the conveyor head, before the shredded output drops into a series of chain-conveyors.
MATERIAL TRANSPORTATION
The chain conveyors transport material from the back of the plant room, rising vertically (at 90°) up and across the biomass silo to the canopied truck port.
Within the series of chain-conveyors, there are motorised slide dampers which enable material to be directly discharged at specific points, including into the biomass storage silo and along the entire length of an articulated walking-floor trailer.
The fail-safe control system communicates with all parts of the system, making operation and observation of the system straightforward. With the addition of inverter drives, each of the system’s conveyors can be adjusted and fine-tuned to ensure seamless transport of shredded material between the shredder and any of its discharge points.
Fercell has been delivering industrial size reduction and recycling systems and industrial ventilation systems for over four decades. From product, installation and servicing to spares and repairs, Fercell provides complete solutions. Fercell is the UK distributor of WEIMA Maschinenbau GmbH shredding and compaction equipment.
Making The Most Of All Seasons FEATURE
David Knollman of Brio UK discusses how homeowners can take advantage of each season with versatile sliding and folding door systems.
If there’s one thing we’re known for in Britain, it’s our temperamental weather (and how we love to complain about it). Between the fleeting summers, blustering winds and bitter winters, our seasons can be wildly unpredictable - making it difficult for homeowners to stay prepared and enjoy their living spaces.
Each year, as the months pass by, homes can struggle to acclimatise to a varied spectrum of weather conditions and temperatures, leading many to believe they’re unable to experience the best that combined indoor and outdoor living can offer. Yet, modern sliding and folding door systems may often hold the answers, by combining aesthetic space-saving features with practical versatility.
In fact, sliding and folding door applications can completely transform contemporary homes by reinventing the barriers between indoor and outdoor living. Offering a unique flexibility to projects, sliding and bi-fold doors provide households with a host of benefits all year round, from aesthetic summer views to energy cost savings in winter. So, how can homeowners reap the rewards whilst complementing their living space?
AESTHETICALLY PRAGMATIC
Sliding and folding door features are naturally aesthetic by design and are frequently used to enhance the style of entire home layouts. Where internal doors create open plan spaces and enhance movement from room to room, external doors act as a home’s gateway to the great outdoors.
When days are brighter and warmer in spring and summer, sliding and folding patio doors will flood a home with natural light and when opened, can offer a better connection to garden areas. Often, in high-end applications, large sliding panels are utilised with specialist hardware and profiles, ensuring the glazed part of the door consists of minimal framing for superior uninterrupted views. Folding doors on the other hand, allow for a virtually clear opening, with smaller panels and more vertical frames.
Both types of doorsets extend living spaces and allow for more light to be passed through to the interior rooms of a house, reducing the need for artificial light during the day, when compared with traditional hinged doors that are typically bulkier in design and can’t open as wide. With that in mind, the distinctive design of sliding and folding door systems is especially useful in scenarios where guests are visiting, and increased traffic flow is expected in multiple areas of the home - such as summer barbecues and other large open plan gatherings. In these settings, occupants are presented with a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors and a versatile functional area for entertaining that can be enjoyed as a result of the saved space.
With only 4% of adults believing the UK is well prepared for hotter summers, the use of sliding and folding doors should not be overlooked as a source of much needed ventilation when facing extreme summer conditions. The naturally wide openings associated with these modern door designs can help to circulate fresh air through a property when temperatures begin to rise, offering enhanced ventilation and supporting a controlled climate when the sun is at its highest.
EFFICIENT TEMPERATURE PERFORMANCE
Eventually - and predictably - the weather will take a turn for the worse. When the signs of autumn and winter reappear, it’s important for a home’s chosen door system to possess quality panels and closing mechanisms, giving users peace of mind that when exterior doors are closed, the weather is locked out too.
As much as sliding and folding door systems can help to regulate temperature in the warm summer months, the right application can equally make a difference when the cold strikes. Sliding and bi-fold doors are renowned for thermal performance - with timber frames generally recognised as more efficient than their aluminium counterparts - and can help to retain the heat inside a home whilst keeping the cold air out. Rebated folding systems, for example, are often applied with brush strips and seals, creating thermally sealed systems that keep draughts away. Energy-efficient glazing can also prevent energy loss and keep energy costs down. In addition, internal partitions assist in temperature control during the winter, with homeowners able to effortlessly close off open plan areas when not in use.
Modern timber doorsets also offer strong sound absorption, with external doors able to shield inside spaces from outside noise, such as heavy traffic and high winds. Furthermore, where regular doors can be susceptible to slamming in windy conditions, reliable folding and sliding soft close door systems offer greater stability in their closing methods,
assuring fingers won’t become trapped as a result of sudden gusts, as well as reducing maintenance and extending the life of the doors. For homes located near the coast or an area experiencing high levels of rain, it’s also important to consider the finish of external door applications. PVD coatings or marine grade stainless steel door hardware, for example, offer enhanced durability in these settings to effectively guard against the elements such as salt spray and sea air - allowing homeowners to enjoy lasting use of their sliding and folding door systems, and all whilst embracing the cycle of Britain’s seasonal weather.
Chris Franklin MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd. a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipmentcontinues his series of articles for Panel and Joinery Production.
This edition he looks at the massive opportunities the “Kings speech “on the opening of parliament on the 17th July 2024 could have on the UK woodworking industry.
“Net zero” “Carbon Neutral” “Sustainable Construction” are all phrases we hear more and more often.
None of these is achievable using conventional building methods using bricks, concrete PVC doors and windows. So, in the woodworking industry, for us it means timber framed housing, under floor heating via heat pumps with electricity from renewables such as wind and solar energy.
This appears, is the only way, net zero with housing is achievable. Timber framed housing with triple glazing (not sure how you make glass carbon neutral) Highly insulated, with solar PV on the roof and a storage battery for your electric vehicle charger and electric car.
As far as the car is concerned there is a possibility that the cars batteries can be used to store electricity during the day for use at other times.
The other spin-off for the woodworking industry is that with more new housing people tend to buy furniture when they move and think of all of the new kitchens and bathrooms, not to mention furniture, that will be needed for all of these new houses.
Wooden doors and windows, wooden flooring, in fact everything as much as possible made of wood.
The other need within the industry will be the factories making all these kitchens, bathrooms and furniture, windows doors etc. will also need to be sustainable. Large roofs mean large arrays of solar PV to produce electricity needed in manufacture.
Biomass boilers using the wood-waste generated from the factory, to heat the factory, showrooms and offices. Ranheat are actively looking at the ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) and also the sterling engine (using hot air) to produce electricity in the summer when heating is not needed but disposal of the wood-waste is still required.
There is also the increased use of engineered timber, using a combination of OSB and softwood to make “I” beams instead of solid timber joists. Engineered timber with small pieces “finger jointed” together.
When a tree is felled there is still a lot of wood that can be turned into woodchip. Known as “lop & top”. This woodchip can be used to fuel kilns to kiln dry the timber prior to use. The possibilities are endless!
So, on the surface of it, the new Government and the King’s speech, could herald a new dawn for wood and wood based products and our industry.

HOMAG CENTATEQ P-310 A Game-Changer For Timber Window Manufacturer French & Westcott
Based in Canterbury, Kent, high end timber windows and doors specialist French & Westcott has invested in a HOMAG CENTATEQ P-310 CNC processing centre. The husband and wife team, Ryan and Sophie Woodward, launched the business in 2013. From the outset they followed traditional manufacturing methods using spindle moulders and planers.
“It became clear to us that this traditional business model was really not working,” explained Ryan. He continued, “It’s just too time consuming; it also relies on expensive, skilled and difficult to find people All in all, it’s no longer a profitable model and I think this realisation is happening across many small joinery businesses.
“With our existing setup, it was only possible to make money doing large batches. As a small independent, however, it was almost impossible for us to win bigger jobs. To overcome the issues, we realised we needed to invest in some new, technically advanced machinery that would speed up our processes, improve our accuracy and make us less reliant on traditional craftspeople.”
THE DAWNING OF NEW POSSIBILITIES
“We began our search for the right solution by visiting the UK facility of a European CNC machine manufacturer. Seeing this machine in action really opened our eyes as to what could be achieved. At that point, however, we realised we would need to undertake a more thorough due diligence exercise to make sure we found the solution that would be able to handle all our needs now and in the foreseeable future.
“One of the potential partners on our list was HOMAG and when we went up to Castle Donington to see its CNCs in action we were blown away by the performance, accuracy and build quality of the machines. HOMAG also arranged for us to visit a leading door manufacturer in Southampton and a premier window manufacturer in Colchester, both of which were running HOMAG CNCs and other HOMAG machines too.
“Committing to investment in a technically advanced machine such as the CENTATEQ P-310 was a massive decision for us. It could have the potential to terminally damage the business if we got it wrong. Those visits,
however, gave us the confidence to proceed with HOMAG. At the time, we were novices as far as knowing how to specify the CNC to best meet our needs. That meant we had to put our faith in HOMAG’s people to be honest and truthful in guiding us through the process.
“I must say, they were brilliant; never once did we feel we were being ‘sold to’ or pressured into ordering things we didn’t need, such as fancy add-ons we’d hardly ever use. In fact, it was us who at one point had to convince HOMAG we needed to invest in a 5-axis, rather than a 4-axis head.”
SELECTING THE RIGHT OPTIONS
“We explained to Phil Pitchford, HOMAG’s CNC expert, our ‘must haves’ for the machine: it had to last us at least 12 to 15 years, so the build quality had to be first class; it had to have high levels of repeatable accuracy to meet our customers’ quality expectations; it had to be versatile to cope with the different sized jobs, from bespoke to larger batch work and it had to be able to do all this quickly. And, of course, it had to be relatively easy to operate so we didn’t need to employ specialist staff.
“Having listened to our ‘wish list’ Phil recommended the CENTATEQ P-310 and after further consultations we finalised the options we needed. These included the three-stage clamps which we’re really pleased we opted for as opposed to the power clamps; the small part clamp that has proved very useful and the longer 4.2 m table,”
INSTALLATION AND TRAINING
“The installation process was incredible. Access to our facility is not the easiest – our yard is small and down a narrow lane, so it’s tricky to say the least. The delivery truck had all the right gear on the back to successfully unload the machine and locate it in the new small out-building (11 m x 10 m) we had constructed especially for the CNC.
“They delivered the machine on the Monday morning and once the electrics were wired up later that day, the HOMAG engineers had it running and commissioned by the end of Tuesday.
“HOMAG then sent along a specialist trainer, Rob, who was absolutely brilliant. There was nothing Rob didn’t know about windows and door manufacturing and he was able to impart his knowledge to us in an easy and clear manner. We can’t speak more highly of him.”
DELIVERING SPEED, EFFICIENCIES AND ACCURACY
“We were asked the other day what was the key benefit of the new HOMAG CENTATEQ P-310 to our business and I blurted out: “You can make money using it!” And ultimately, that’s what it’s all about. We now process almost every component of a window or door on the CNC because it is so much more accurate and quicker.
“Previously when the parts were made on different machines, they didn’t necessarily fit together well at first. This necessitated hand finishing, such as filling and sanding little gaps here and there, but now we don’t have gaps, every component fits perfectly, so we save a huge amount of time eliminating hand finishing before the windows are painted.
“Now we use dowels rather than finger joints which required slicing the fingers off once the unit had been glued; dowels eliminate all those extra processes. Prior to getting the CENTATEQ P-310, we would have to refuse small one-off jobs under the £5,000 mark because we just couldn’t make them pay. With the new set up we can not only do the bespoke small jobs profitably, but we can also easily handle the bigger projects that architects can give us.
“It’s hard to explain what a risk we took investing in this CENTATEQ P-310, in fact, I’m not sure we’d have made the leap had we not had the confidence in, and support of the HOMAG team,
“From the outset, we felt that the team at HOMAG were looking to build a long-term relationship, rather than just selling us a machine. We are so happy we took the leap, it has transformed our business in every way. The fact that we now do a lot of bespoke conservation restoration work profitably, all on the CNC, speaks volumes as to what this machine can achieve. It is a real game-changer, without a shadow of a doubt,” concludes Woodward.

Extractly Ltd Attains ISO Certification
Following the announcement this time last year that Extractly Limited had achieved ‘SafeContractor’ status, the company has now attained further recognition of the quality of its business processes that comes with the achievement of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 Certification.
ISO certifications undoubtedly add credibility to a business’s reputation and are widely regarded as an endorsement of a company’s commitment to high standards, as Extractly’s General Manager, Kieran Redmond, explained: “Following discussions with Citation ISO Certification Ltd, formerly QMS, we made the decision to go ahead and put our practices and processes to the test. The initial motivation for wanting to achieve ISO Certification was led by our desire to gain a competitive edge in the marketplace by maximising customer satisfaction, and we were confident that ensuring our work was always carried out to the highest quality standards, with meticulous attention to regulatory compliance, could go a long way towards achieving this goal.”
Operations Director, Graham Day, who has supported Kieran throughout the process, added: “Kieran had invested a lot of time and effort into securing SafeContractor accreditation for Extractly and, although we hadn’t necessarily been documenting everything to the levels required for ISO 9001, it was clear that we had already been fulfilling the majority of the obligations and responsibilities demanded by Citation.”
In conclusion, Kieran Redmond commented: “As well as enhancing the service we can offer to our customers, the process of ISO 9001 certification has helped to foster a culture of continuous improvement throughout the business, and we are all particularly proud to have achieved ISO 14001 which demonstrates how committed we are to minimising the environmental impact of our business with, for example, a comprehensive programme of waste recycling, implementing low energy lighting and, as widely as possible, adopting the use of hybrid and electric vehicles.”

Combilift – Forklift Safety INDUSTRY
When choosing material handling equipment for your loads and facilities, it’s crucial to make a well-considered decision. You should take into account factors such as effective and efficient handling, financial cost, and sustainability, but safety should be your top priority.
With advancing technology, it’s essential to stay updated with market developments to ensure you’re not falling behind due to relying on outdated material handling equipment or machinery.
Irish forklift manufacturer Combilift has over 26 years of experience in the material handling sector and is an expert in assisting businesses in maximising the capacity of their facilities, enhancing efficient operations and most importantly, making them safer.
Combilift has a dedicated team of R&D engineers who continuously work on creating innovative solutions for safe, space-saving, and efficient handling of long and bulky loads. Their commitment to innovation is evident from the multiple patents they have acquired over the years.
Forklift safety is a top priority for every business, and ensuring safe material-handling operations is paramount to Combilift. Combilift’s dedication to enhancing the safety of your making material-handling operations is evident in the numerous patents acquired.
Multidirectional forklift models such as those in the C-Series and CB range are designed to travel sideways while handling long and bulky loads, for example, timber panels. The
sideways function eliminates the need for overhead carrying while navigating tight spaces, which significantly reduces the risk of injury. This in turn allows for much better and cost-effective use of all available space which is one of a company’s most valuable assets. An additional safety feature is that these forklifts are built with a very low centre of gravity, allowing for a low-to-the-ground movement of your load. The C-series also includes an integrated platform, providing a stable base for resting your load during transportation.
Combilift pedestrian stacker range is also ideal for safely handling long loads. Equipped with Combilift’s unique, patented tiller arm, these models guarantee maximum safety for the operator and other people in the vicinity. The tiller arm can be turned to the left or right and allows the rear wheel to be turned parallel to the chassis and back again at the touch of a button. This allows the operator to remain in the safest position when working in narrow aisles - at the side of the truck and not at the rear as with other pedestrian stackers. This reduces the risk of the operator becoming trapped between the truck and the racking and ensures full visibility of the load and the surrounding area. Let us show you how Combilift can enhance the safety of your material handling operations.

Smartwop And Productionmanager: HOMAG’s Dynamic Software Duo
Furniture design software has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years, making long-accepted limitations of manufacturing a thing of the past. Consequently, customers have grown accustomed to remarkable levels of flexibility, precision and ease of use – and should settle for nothing less.
To meet these expectations, HOMAG offers a range of innovative software solutions designed to enhance the entire furniture design and production process. SmartWOP and productionManager are two such solutions. Individually, they provide impressive capabilities, but when combined, they can transform an entire operation.
SMARTWOP: THE EASY WAY TO DESIGN FURNITURE
SmartWOP is a user-friendly CAD/CAM system that simplifies furniture design while offering maximum flexibility. It allows users to design custom furniture using an intuitive drag-and-drop interface. Individual components can be effortlessly placed into predefined volumes, including special configurations like sloping ceilings or corner cabinets. This flexibility enables users to create a wide variety of furniture designs quickly and efficiently.
POWERFUL FEATURES FOR INTELLIGENT DESIGN
SmartWOP’s drag-and-drop functionality means that even users without CAD knowledge can design custom furniture easily. It includes features to simulate door and drawer operations to check for potential collisions with neighbouring components. A comprehensive library of fixtures and connectors from well-known manufacturers is included, and users can also add their own woodWOP components.
The software boasts impressive capabilities for realistic furniture visualisation. An integrated material library allows users to apply various panel and edge materials to components, providing a rotatable 3D model that accurately represents the final product. The exploded view function is particularly useful for designing complex pieces of furniture by displaying all individual components separately.
INTEGRATED ROOM PLANNING
SmartWOP extends beyond individual furniture pieces, allowing users to design entire furnishings for rooms such as kitchens and offices. This room planning functionality supports comprehensive interior design projects from individual cabinets to complete living areas.
UNIQUE INTEGRATION WITH WOODWOP
One of SmartWOP’s standout features is its integration with woodWOP. Users can select parts of a furniture item in SmartWOP and open them directly in woodWOP to add processing steps. These changes are then automatically updated and visualised in SmartWOP. This seamless interaction facilitates efficient design and subsequent CNC production, generating CNC programs that include all processing steps from both SmartWOP and woodWOP.
DIRECT DATA TRANSFER TO HOMAG APPS
SmartWOP generates essential production data, such as CNC programs, parts lists, fixture lists, and technical drawings, at the touch of a button. This data can be directly transferred to HOMAG apps like productionManager and intelliDivide, ensuring that all job details are accessible to all employees involved in the production process.
PRODUCTIONMANAGER: STREAMLINING PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT
productionManager is HOMAG’s digital job folder, designed to enhance transparency and efficiency in production processes. It provides a centralised platform where all jobrelated information, such as parts lists and drawings, can be accessed from anywhere. With productionManager, every employee involved in the production process has up-to-date information at all times and can therefore coordinate with ease on even the most complex manufacturing jobs.
REAL-TIME PRODUCTION UPDATES
productionManager provides real-time updates on the status of each job – and better still, HOMAG machines connected to tapio can automatically report production progress back to productionManager. This reduces the need for manual tracking, and helps ensure that all team members are aware of the current state of production.
EFFICIENT PART TRACKING
productionManager offers comprehensive part tracking capabilities, providing a clear view of where each component is in the production process. Each part is labelled with an individual ID that carries all necessary processing information, ensuring seamless traceability. This functionality helps in quickly identifying the status of each component, which is crucial for meeting delivery deadlines and maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction.
SIMPLIFIED WORKFLOW
By replacing paper-based documentation with digital tracking, productionManager simplifies workflow and reduces administrative overhead. This digital approach means that information such as job progress and component locations are updated in real-time and accessible to all relevant personnel, leading to quicker resolution of issues, more efficient production processes, and reduced chances of errors due to miscommunication or lost paperwork.
EASE OF IMPLEMENTATION AND USE
Implementing productionManager is straightforward, with the basic version of the product being free of charge.
Companies can start using productionManager without immediate financial commitment, and costs only arise when adjusting the number of workstations that utilise the software. This flexibility makes it an attractive option for businesses of various sizes looking to improve their production management.

INTEGRATION WITH OTHER HOMAG TOOLS
productionManager integrates seamlessly with other HOMAG digital solutions, such as SmartWOP and intelliDivide. For instance, data generated in SmartWOP can be transferred directly to productionManager, ensuring that all design and production information is consistent and easily accessible. Additionally, intelliDivide can calculate optimised cutting or nesting patterns, further enhancing production efficiency.
ENHANCED CUSTOMER COMMUNICATION
After placing an order for something large like a piece of furniture, customers typically appreciate being kept in the loop. With poductionManager, sales teams can easily access job status information and provide timely updates to customers. This level of transparency helps build trust and improves customer satisfaction by ensuring that clients are always informed about the progress of their orders.
CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT AND FEEDBACK INTEGRATION
productionManager is continually updated based on user feedback. HOMAG works closely with its users to implement new features and improvements, ensuring that the software evolves to meet the changing needs of the industry. It’s a collaborative approach that ensures productionManager remains a cutting-edge solution for production management.
THE DYNAMIC DUO
Combining SmartWOP and productionManager provides a comprehensive solution for seamless furniture design and production management. SmartWOP’s intuitive CAD/ CAM system allows users to design custom furniture with ease, using drag-and-drop functionality and a robust library of materials and fixtures – and once a design is completed in SmartWOP, the data can be directly transferred to productionManager, where it is organised and tracked throughout the manufacturing process.
Together, these software solutions streamline the entire workflow from initial design to final assembly, resulting in reduced turnaround times and an increase in overall productivity.

Ostermann’s Oak Veneer Edgings Have Many Varieties From The Forest To The Living Room
European or American? Knotty, smoked or even wild?
At Ostermann, carpenters / cabinet makers will find numerous veneer edgings made of oak wood, in many widths and thicknesses. What are the differences?
Not all oak is the same! - You can see that at first glance when you put all of Ostermann’s oak veneer edgings next to each other. The individual variants are not just distinguished by colour or grain, but also by their surface structure and by whether or not there are knots in the wood decor. Then there is the large stock range of different widths and thicknesses. Especially in 0.5, 1 and 2 mm thickness as well as in standard widths of 24, 33 and 43, the choice is impressive. All of Ostermann’s oak veneer edgings have a paintable sanded surface and can therefore be enhanced by oiling, staining or lacquering right after their application. Edgings in split wood, woodworm, sawn or stonewashed look can be used to create that unique look. Important to know: all Ostermann wood veneer edgings are pre-coated with a primer. This makes bonding far easier. There are also some edgings available without primer, if that is what is needed for special applications. All edgings can be delivered quickly and reliably from stock. For further information on Ostermann’s oak veneer edgings, type in the search term “Highlights09” on the Ostermann website www.ostermann. eu
EUROPEAN OR AMERICAN?
Two different continents - when it comes to oak, that also means two different trees. The wood used for the veneer can come from European or American oak. They mainly differ in colour: the American oak wood tends to be a little darker and redder. As with all wood surfaces, individual edgings can look slightly different depending on their origin and processing. In the end, it is up to the fabricator to create a perfect wood shade on their furniture.
DIVERSITY OF VENEER PATTERNS AND SURFACES
Apart from the wood type, the edgings also differ regarding their veneer pattern. Rustic furniture usually calls for a rather knotty veneer, as provided by the wood veneer edging knotty European oak. For knot-free veneers you can choose a classic oak veneer edging such as American or European oak. Finally, European wild oak with its vivid grain is perfect for creating a unique look.
REAL WOOD EDGINGS IN WOODWORM, SPLIT WOOD AND SAWN LOOK
If you are looking for something special, real wood edgings in woodworm, split wood and sawn look are the way to go. The strikingly structured surfaces have a lot to offer in terms of feel. True to the motto “designed by nature”, they bring even more authenticity to furniture making. The sawn look is available in two colours (European oak and Smoked oak dark). Other eye-catching options are the slightly greyish Oak stonewashed edging, the extremely dark Smoked oak Arabica or end grain and cross grain edgings made of oak wood.
THICKNESSES FROM 0.5 TO 3 MM
Ostermann stocks most oak veneer edgings in several thicknesses, so fabricators are spoilt for choice in terms of quality and cost. Thin veneer (0.5 mm) has a single-ply layer of veneer. The edgings have a fleece backing and can additionally be coated with hotmelt adhesive on request. 1 mm edgings consist of two layers of veneer. Four layers of veneer have been glued with PVAc dispersion adhesive for 2 mm edgings and six layers for 3 mm edgings.
ALL FROM ONE SOURCE
If you have selected an Ostermann oak veneer edging, you should consider other materials needed for the construction of your wood veneer furniture and order them in one go. The diversity of the Ostermann assortment ranges from abrasives and wood veneer glue to fastening systems or handles and handle profiles.
Oak is oak? Far from it! Here you can see a selection of different oak veneer edgings from Ostermann

PCD Tooling – For Tomorrow’s Cutting Edge Technology - Today
PCD Tooling Solutions was formed in 2008 by Paul Falkingham who, having worked in the industry for several woodworking machine tool companies including his own saw service centre in the 1990’s, decided it was time to put his experience in diamond tooling to good use. His knowledge goes back to the mid 1980’s working as tool room supervisor for Hygena Kitchens when the first diamond saws and tools were purchased and tested. The results were so impressive that the tool room was soon producing its own saws, profile blocks and routers for the Hygena group.
The connections and relationships that were forged in those early days came into their own in 2008 when PCD Tooling Solutions was born and a network of dealers and outlets was formed covering the whole of the UK. PCD is very much a family concern with Paul’s wife Wendy joining the company in 2009 to cover the increasing office and admin workload. In the same year they employed another two employees. Paul and Wendy’s son, Ben, joined the company in 2018 after completing his university education and following this up with further mechanical engineering qualifications.
The business started with just one Vollmer QM erosion machine and one Agie wire erosion machine and the business grew rapidly and investment was the key. Year on year new machines and upgrades were put in place to improve capacity and above all quality, and this mind set remains the same today. PCD Tooling Solutions now boast a stable of 5 Vollmer erosion machines - some have auto loading which enables continuous unmanned production - along with an Accutex erosion machine and a host of support and peripheral machines. With the purchase of the Zoller pre-set and inspection centre and Haimer balancing, all tools are manufactured and serviced to the highest level and the quality is transparent with both these machines having certified proof of accuracy. Further investment and innovation is constant and the company hopes to announce a major step forward before the end of 2024.
SERVICE AND SUPPLY
Service and repair of diamond tipped machine tools is the mainstay of the business with a quick turnaround, quality and value for money at the core of everything the company does. Not only do they provide service work but also keep a good quantity of standard diamond machine tools in stock. These tools are supplied by one of the highest quality tool manufacturers in the world.
Where PCD Tooling Solutions excel is special machine tools which can be made to the customers specification and design and especially diamond tipped circular saw blades. PCD Tooling Solutions believe they are the only diamond tool manufacturer in the UK to produce diamond tipped circular saws in house to specific customer specifications. They can provide any diameter up to 600 mm, any tooth form, any PCD grade for cutting virtually any material. All their materials for saw manufacture are from UK suppliers. Paul explains.
“In 2008 our company profile was service and supply of diamond machine tools to the trade or dealers and saw service centres, but we have gained some very valuable end user customers over the years, particularly in the kitchen and office furniture industries. However, basically they have had to find us, be it through our website, our location or recommendation so we now feel it’s time to spread the word to all areas of the panel and furniture industry and beyond. With so many different materials being produced we need to get the word out that we have the experience and the capacity and the best in plant and machinery. For instance we have had some great results with PCD saws for cutting aluminium, cement particle board, carbon fibre board and plastics.
“At an exhibition some years ago I got talking to furniture manufacturer from the midlands and from his lanyard I recognised his well-known company and from my lanyard he saw that my business was PCD tooling. To my amusement he went on to explain that he had a company that looked after his diamond machine tools and he was very happy with the quality, the turn round and the value for money. Unbeknown to him it was PCD Tooling Solutions that had been looking after his diamond tools for the past 10 years – frustratingly I couldn’t divulge this to him as the dealer he uses is a very valuable customer to us but it was satisfying to know our work was appreciated.”
With so many different materials to be machined it is time for us to let the industry know who we are and what our capacity is. We want to create a bigger customer base and are very happy to discuss customers individual requirements. PCD Tooling Solutions believe that your machine and product is only as good as the tools you use and we are your ideal partners to provide help you maintain your tools to the very highest quality.”

SAVE ENERGY REDUCE COSTS
In many manufacturing facilities, extraction fans operate continuously, at full power, throughout the working day.
Even when some machines are not in use, and often during factory breaks, the powerful, energy-consuming fans continue to run at full speed – wasting valuable energy... and money!
With ECOGATE, the extraction system responds in real-time to variations in machine use. When a production machine is switched on, the greenBOX Controller opens a motorised damper to provide extraction for that particular machine.
With ECOGATE technology installed, an extraction fan will consume the minimum power required to provide optimum extraction – reducing electricity bills by 68% on average.
