INDUSTRY WOOD BURNING STOVES, FRIEND, OR FOE?

On December the 22nd the Times newspaper published a warning “woodburning stoves “should carry pollution warning” The article was written by Adam Vaughn, environmental editor at the Times. Chris Franklin MD at Ranheat Engineering Ltd. a leading UK manufacturer of wood combustion equipment-continues his series of articles for Panel & Joinery Production. This issue he looks at how the Government is looking at pollution caused by wood-burning stoves. This could have a serious effect on the UK wood-working Industry. Domestic wood-burning stoves are reportedly responsible for up to 20% of airborne pollution in the form of NOx and particulate. The 2021 Environment Act gave local authorities the power to issue on the spot civil penalties from £175 to £300. Please note these are for domestic users not industrial users. Industrial users using wood-waste to heat their factories are already governed by strict rules, but it is expected that these rules will change with the emission levels lowered. The strict emission limits that apply to systems over 90kgs/hour wood consumption do not apply below the 90kg limit. But this is set to change. The governments Renewable Heat incentive, started with a higher emission level for NOx and Particulate, this was changed, and the limits were lowered during the scheme. At the end of the scheme this had fallen to 30 g/GJ PM and 150 g/GJ NOx. For industrial boiler systems. Ranheat ceramic filters have been consistently measured at an average of 1.2 g/GJ particulate and 110 g/GJ for NOx. The proposed new limits for domestic stoves will be a maximum of 375 g/GJ particulate. The current regulations look set to drop to a more stringent 185g/ GJ. If the government is targeting domestic wood-burners it is highly likely that these will be applied to industrial installations, even small ones. Therefore, it is likely that new Hand loaded industrial heaters will need to be lower than this new limit. At the moment Hand Loaded Industrial heaters are generally required to meet the clean air act, and have been exemption tested by the government. Many of these tests were carried out more than 20 years ago. The feeling is that the new stricter limits will apply to all new industrial installations. To meet the new lower limits, it is unlikely that a natural draft system will meet the lower limits, as there is insufficient control with a natural draft chimney. All Ranheat systems are fitted with induced draft (electric chimney fan) and forced draft fans for both primary and secondary air. Whichever Ranheat system you go for or indeed any wood fired installation using waste wood still has to meet all of the current regulations. You still are legally required to obtain planning, chimney height approval and permits to enable you to legally burn wood-waste. This can be in the form of an exemption from the EA for up to 50kgs per hour, or a permit for a SWIP or a full part B permit. Ranheat are on hand to give free assistance with obtaining these permits and permissions. PACKAGING AND TRANSPORT MATERIAL BY OSTERMANN Carpenters/cabinet makers put a lot of know-how, along with their heart and soul, into every new piece of furniture. So it would be a shame if damage occurred during transport. Ostermann therefore offers a wide range of materials for packaging and transport. No workshop should be without packaging material. Preferably from sustainable, i.e.reusable or recyclable materials. In some cases, however, you cannot do without the good old stretch foil. Depending on their needs, furniture makers will find a wide range of materials for packaging and transport at Ostermann: from hook and loop tapes and adhesive tapes to covers, foils, or transport accessories such as carrying aids or lashing straps. Find more information on www.ostermann.eu, under the search term “#packaging”.

NO SLIDING AND SLIPPING To keep tools and furniture in place during transport, Ostermann supplies various lashing straps. We also recommend the non-slip mats for load securing. They are available as rolled goods in different widths or as a set, and even readily cut to an octagon. OSTERMANN TIP: ERGONOMIC TOOLS & AIDS If you are looking for more products to support an ergonomic transport of materials or finished workpieces, take a look at the “Ergonomic Tools & Aids” category in the Ostermann online shop. You will find here, for example, drywall supports, board carriers, or suction lifters.

PACK IT IN If you want a sustainable solution to protect your furniture, take reusable cargo covers. Ostermann has them in two sizes. Or you can use Kraft paper, which can also be applied as backing paper. For fixing the furniture, there is reusable hook and loop tape (rolled goods with 5 metres per roll) or paper masking tape by REDOCOL greenline. The range further includes foam foil and bubble wrap as well as stretch foil and various other adhesive tapes. EASIER DONE THAN SAID To make transport of the packed workpieces as easy on the back as possible, Ostermann offers all-purpose trolleys and lifting and moving straps. The Ostermann experts recommend the new, leather-reinforced cross straps. The 5 metre long belt can be used by one person alone or two people, and holds workpieces weighing up to 100 kg.

CASE STUDY PLYWOOD WITH PURPOSE

JAMES LATHAM DONATES SHEET MATERIALS FOR SPUD’S’ ‘THE LIVING ROOM’

The Living Room’ is a transformative community hub in Sway, Hampshire. Opening on the 12th of October 2023, it was originally planned as a safe space where people with dementia could relax and socialise. However, the project, a collaborative effort initiated by arts and education charity SPUD, has evolved beyond its initial purpose to encompass a broader demographic, including young vulnerable people and those living with mental health issues in the community. CREATED FOR LONGEVITY With a very small budget, SPUD knew it needed to rely on the goodwill of its project partners and long-time supporters. One of these is James Latham, a leading independent distributor of architectural materials, which had previously worked with the organisation on its Handlebar Café project. When the senior team was approached and heard about the social impact The Living Room would have, they immediately offered to be involved. To fulfill the building’s exacting specifications and ensure uncompromising performance standards in the finished article, the selection of high-quality materials was critical. A WELL-ROUNDED APPROACH Crucially, SPUD needed components that would enable a swift and hassle-free assembly and installation, yet result in a durable, visually-appealing building. Situated on the circular footprint of a historic water tower, on SPUD’s campus, spudWORKS, was keen to maintain the same shape for The Living Room. This meant that any cladding material specified had to be able to achieve the required curvature for a rotund finish. Working closely with James Latham, and after considering a variety of products, it was decided that a combination of plywood and Sterling OSB (Oriented Strand Board) would be the most suitable materials, especially when considered in relation to The Living Room’s design. Plywood’s inherent flexibility and tensile strength meant that it could be formed to achieve the desired curvature without compromising on its structural integrity. Meeting with the seal of approval from the project architects, the distributor donated 120m2 of sheet materials towards its construction.

FUSING FORM AND FUNCTION Work on The Living Room commenced in June 2023, according to a strict schedule with the sheets used as a cladding material across the building’s roof, and external and interior walls. The natural timber facing gives the space a pleasant, welcoming, and natural feel, evoking the majesty of The New Forest National Park in which The Living Room is located. This is further enhanced by the use of overlapping marine plywood titles on the external walls which achieve an attractive, rustic quality. Importantly, there is a distinct synergy between material and design, embodying The Living Room’s intended sense of unity, equality, and community. Ultimately it achieves these attributes, and more, creating a new destination that simultaneously achieves sustainability, comfort, and artistic expression. A BLEND OF CHARACTERISTICS Mark Drury from SPUD expressed his gratitude for the support, saying, “James Latham’s generous donation has breathed life into The Living Room Project. Each plywood panel underscores their generosity, amplifying the project’s mission. Its continued support has been vital to the project.” Stuart Devoil from James Latham, says, “The way the products have been used in The Living Room Dementia Project is incredibly creative and showcases the material’s versatility. Seeing the project at completion and its potential to support and inspire individuals facing challenges is deeply gratifying and reflects our own ambition to be the most conscientious and socially responsible distributor on the market.” James Latham stocks some of the best quality sheet materials in the world, all carefully vetted and assessed to ensure environmental compliance and adherence to global certification schemes. Available in the UK and Ireland-wide from all its 14 depots in a wide array of thicknesses, grades, and sizes, James Latham’s sheet portfolio offers a nearunrivalled level of choice. INDUSTRY MASTERWOOD WINDOWS AND DOORS OPENING UP OPPORTUNITIES

Masterwood provide outstanding, joinery production, CNC machines which it has developed over many years. Sales Director, Dave Kennard, explains “Masterwood now offers a full range for the efficient manufacturing of Windows of any shape and size, including Traditional Box Windows, along with Timber Framed Doors and Solid Core Doors. These production methods can also be moved up to automated systems for higher capacities.”

“Since woodworking machines were first introduced, one of the major uses has always been the production of windows and doors; timber frame doors and in later years, solid core doors” says Dave. “The procedure to make a timber window or door with traditional methods has not changed – once you have your material prepared you need to draw on the timber cut-off lines, mortise and tenon positions etc. A timeconsuming process. Then setting and using each machine; the X-Cut, a mortiser, a tenoner, a spindle moulder, and maybe an overhead router. Assembly follows & adjustments to make everything fit together, including cutting out haunches on the band saw and using hand routers for ironmongery.” Dave adds, “As a wood machinist apprentice, I spent many hours drawing lines onto door stiles and then swinging on the old Wadkin chisel mortiser arm to try and cut out all those mortises staring at me on the pallet. Today, life can be so much easier with just one machine. A CNC can produce the same work more accurately and in a fraction of the time”.

8

www.p-j-production.com

MASTERWOOD DEVELOPMENTS For the past 25 years Masterwood Spa, the Italian machine manufacturer, has evolved its machines to suit today’s demands for bespoke solid timber joinery. An impressive roster of developments include; the use of large diameter tooling, allowing full length mortise and tenon joints production; higher powered router motors, allowing stack tooling to be used; heavy duty clamps to ensure components are held rigid on the machine bed; more tooling positions to cover the extra tools required for window and door production; automatic bed positioning to speed up production times and reduce set up times and specialised software, to ensure the minimum time from design to production.

INDUSTRY Keeping with tradition, Masterwood continues to develop bespoke and dedicated solutions for the solid timber industry. A recent introduction of the Teknoline, a CNC for high levels of door frame production, bolsters the innovative machining options Masterwood offers. Available as a standalone machine with manual loading, or as a complete line with infeed and outfeed equipment. The Teknoline offers a high-quality finished product due to the elimination of mechanical vibrations, thanks to its highly rigid structure. The automatic positioning clamps provide high accuracy with repetitive machining. Masterwood can supply a full range of solutions to suit any customer’s manufacturing requirements, from an entry level Project 250, through to the top end Project 565 – a five axis machine with all possible options for multi-routers, tooling and clamping. Dave continues, “We can provide dedicated machines like the 4WIN, a CNC machine with a unique clamping system for windows where the workpiece never moves. Each component is firmly held in place while every operation is carried out, even the recesses for all the ironmongery, so once the material leaves the machine it can be put together like a jigsaw and is ready for finishing and glazing.”

TRADITIONAL SLIDING SASH WINDOWS Traditional box windows can be seen in all major towns and cities and are a traditional part of joinery history. They are, however, notorious for being difficult to produce with traditional methods. “The many varying set-ups and joints are a minefield for costly mistakes,” explains Dave. “Today we have a number of customers who have produced traditional sliding sash windows on their CNCs where the machining time for one complete frame and a pair of sashes is under two man-hours, this includes the pulley cut outs, frame joints, pocket cut outs and sash horns. The parts all then fit together with practically no bench or hand work – using traditional methods this same job could take a full day with only limited work being possible on traditional woodworking machines. “We have found that customers with CNC machines can now produce batches, or one-off windows and doors, in a fraction of the time that is needed with traditional woodworking machines.” TIMBER FRAME DOORS Timber frame doors are the same, where they require operations on a number of classic machines whereas with our CNC machines everything is done in one big operation, components cut to length, through to mortises, haunches, tenons scribes, profiles, and ironmongery housings all performed including the after assembly once the door parts have been assembled.

FEATURE DESIGNS WITH AN EXTRA DIMENSION. TEXTURED SURFACES FROM DECORATIVE PANELS LAMINATION VOICE TEC TEXTURED SURFACES The dp-limitless Textured Collection Inspiring textures and hard proof that laminates can have depth - feel the difference with the Textured Surface collection from Decorative Panels Lamination and discover the beauty and endless possibilities of textured finishes from dp-limitless range. Texture is one of the most important elements when it comes to design and the way it is used can have a huge impact on the atmosphere of the space you are designing. Unfortunately, in some designs today, many pieces of furniture can lack expression – they often seem flat and lifeless, even when contrasted with different colours. This can be especially true if there is nothing else in the interior to break up the ‘flatness’ of the furniture. How about livening up a room or piece of furniture to give it more energy and character by mixing in different textures. Just by adding expression by combining rough textures with the more simple and smooth surfaces can really enhance any product design. Do you think laminate is flat? You probably need to rethink that. DP Lamination’s textured surfaces offer an attractive

10

way to enhance the usability and aesthetic value of surfaces in your future projects. When we choose new laminates for our ranges we look at more than just the décor; now there is a large number of different kinds of textures available, the use of which can have surprising effects. Textured surfaces not only enhance the decor itself, but also offer new possibilities in terms of aesthetics and functionality. They extend the possible applications of the surface, for example, creating a warm and cosy feel to a space by enhancing its functionality and attractiveness. Texture can greatly enhance a designed space and bring it to life, emphasising its style and character. Soft, matt textures with minimal depth offer a sense of calm and relaxation, while deeper textures and high gloss create an energetic atmosphere. Well-chosen textures can achieve exceptional results. Gloss, for example, brings out depth from a solid colour, and textures complement stone decors and wood decors well, creating a realistic and exclusive visual experience. The impressions and feelings generated by the surface have a strong impact on our emotions and strongly influence our perception. Tactile experiences are at the forefront of design. They are key because of their ability to stimulate our senses of touch and sight.

CHALLENGE CALDERBOOK THIS MARCH This Spring, you are invited to Challenge Calderbrook. From the 21st-22nd March 2024, the machinery distributor will open its Bacup showroom doors to manufacturers looking for real-time edging results. The two day event will centre around Holz-Her’s patented Glu Jet system - a standard feature on all Holz-Her edgebanders – with demonstrations taking place on HolzHer’s Artea 1030 with VISE setting and the Auriga 1308 XL Power with automatic servo setting. But these aren’t just any machinery demonstrations. To prove just how easy Holz-Her’s edgebanding solutions are to use when creating finished panels in one pass, visitors are encouraged to bring their most challenging edging or board for the team to edge during the event. From state-of-theart, high gloss edging right up to thick cross sections in solid wood, Holz-Her’s Glu Jet makes flexible manufacturing and high-strength and near invisible joints a reality. Aaron Hoyle, Director of Calderbook Woodworking Machinery says: “We want our customers to see real results, not pre-prepared results that may be difficult to replicate in true working conditions. We don’t know what board or edging our customers will turn up with on the day and as a result, visitors will get to see exactly what our machines are capable of. “The idea behind Challenge Calderbook is to promote our confidence in Holz-Her’s edgebanders. It’s our way of helping our customers get a true understanding of what can be achieved when using the latest technology from Holz-Her and why the Glu Jet surpasses traditional gluing systems. As well as accepting any challenge that comes our way, we will also be running EVA and PUR applications on two popular edgebanders chosen to represent different price points and manufacturing requirements. Our team will be on hand throughout the event to talk you through every aspect of glue application and to help you keep up to speed with the very latest specifications and maintenance advice. So, what are you waiting for? Challenge Calderbrook this March!”

He then goes on to present some of the specific measures that Blum has introduced to make its business more sustainable. USING WASTE HEAT AND PROMOTING BIODIVERSITY One area highlighted in the documentary is Blum’s efforts to develop a sustainable energy supply: 95% of the company’s ventilation systems are now equipped with heat recovery technology, meaning that in spring and autumn the Blum plants in Austria are heated entirely using the waste heat from their production processes. The company also uses district heating, groundwater cooling and PV systems installed at its premises. The vast majority of its buildings are compact, multi-storey structures in order to minimise land use, and in the last 40 years Blum has optimised its space utilisation by 35%. That means that for a 14,000 m2 plot, the business now boasts 50,000 m2 of usable space, saving the equivalent of five football pitches’ worth of land, which can instead be preserved as near-natural areas. Green roofs (such as those at the company’s largest Austrian

FEATURE plant in Bregenz) have also been an integral part of Blum’s infrastructure for more than 20 years. These roofs help to conserve biodiversity, manage rainwater drainage, act as CO2 sinks and also improve air quality. Similar initiatives are already underway at many of the business’ other sites across the Vorarlberg region of Austria, including habitat creation projects and green façades. CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND RAIL TRANSPORT “The zinc sprues produced during our production process are fed directly back into the production machines or sent to our very own remelting furnace to be processed into new raw material,” says Laura Erhart, an expert in the circular economy at Blum. Any production waste that cannot be recycled internally is fed back into the material cycle by an external partner. As Laura explains, “That means we’re using resources more efficiently and minimizing any negative impact on the environment.” Logistics is another area where Blum is working hard to minimise its carbon footprint. The company has operated its own railway siding since 2009 and currently transports around 35% of its deliveries by rail – a more environmentally friendly form of transport. Almost all the company’s fleet of HGVs has also been converted to run on biogas produced using food waste from the local region. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY COMMUTING Last but not least, Blum is committed to raising awareness of sustainability issues among its staff. The family company has a number of exciting initiatives in place to support its employees, including its mobility concept where the business covers the costs of an annual public transport ticket for its staff. “The ticket can be used for both

commuting and leisure, so we’re encouraging people to use sustainable transport outside of work too,” explains Katharina Schön, one of Blum’s mobility experts. Blum also supports employees with the cost of buying a new bike and, as an added incentive, employees that make sustainable commuting choices can collect ‘Ecopoints’ and convert these into rewards. Before the mobility concept was introduced in 2021, 38% of employees at Blum Austria travelled to work using sustainable transport; today that figure stands at 46% on average. As these examples show, Blum understands its responsibility as a global player to be a role model for the furniture industry and is committed to investing in a sustainable future. At the same time, however, Blum knows that there is still much work to be done. Everyone must play their part, both within Blum and across the industry as a whole. It will take a willingness to change, a healthy dose of tenacity and, above all, flexibility, versatility and creativity – along with some “moving ideas for sustainability”. As Philipp Blum put it, “Change requires all of us. Every one of us has a vital role to play, because sustainability impacts us all.”

FEATURE VERSATILE AND EFFICIENT NESTING WITH THE HOMAG CENTATEQ N-210 AND N-510 CNC PROCESSING CENTRES CNC nesting machines offer a highly efficient method of producing components for carcass furniture or the dividing and refining of furniture fronts. HOMAG’s range of nesting CNCs presents options for entry-level woodworking shops through to industrial furniture manufacturers. The new CNC CENTATEQ N-210 and N-510 gantry-processing centres deliver faster performance, better clamping functions, improved component finishing, lower power consumption, and reduced costs for both the initial machine outlay and ongoing running costs.

N-210 accelerates almost twice as quickly as its predecessor, maintains its maximum feed rate for longer and decelerates quicker, and all with high point to point times. As a result, output times are considerably improved.

“Our new CENTATEQ N-210 and N-510 nesting CNCs have significantly raised the performance bar for nesting technology,” explains HOMAG UK managing director, Simon Brooks. “With 3, 4 and 5-axis configurations, a range of different table sizes and an advanced, switchable vacuum table concept, these new modular CNC processing centres can run manually or automatically.

OPTIMAL MATERIAL UTILISATION To provide detailed part identification, there are options for automatic labelling at the infeed or manual labelling at the outfeed. Both these error-free labelling processes not only identify each part, but also provide information for subsequent processing steps.

“A new innovative design of the table vacuum zones has enabled us to further improve workpiece clamping. This results in a better finish for components, whilst also reducing the number of vacuum pumps required thereby reducing running costs and the initial capital expenditure. Additional components such as the label printer, an automatic lifting table or outfeed conveyor belt can easily be installed and connected via a simple ‘plug & play’ system.” AN ECONOMICAL NESTING SOLUTION The HOMAG CENTATEQ N-210 CNC processing centre offers 3 and 4-axis configurations with table size options from 1.25 x 2.5 m to 2.1 x 7.4 m, in half or full-sized formats. The

22

www.p-j-production.com

The N-210 can be integrated into either a manual or automated production setup. It can be fed by hand or automatically via a roller conveyor or a lifting table. Similarly, the destacking can be done manually or automatically via a robot.

HOMAG has developed a powerful software solution to help effectively manage material stock, automatically create the required nests, optimise cycle times, create the required labels if required and seamlessly link the production office to the machine minimising the need for operator intervention at the machine. ADVANCED MATRIX TABLE Specifically designed to provide maximum flexibility, the MATRIX table features a defined grid of channels and supply points to ensure optimum vacuum distribution for processing with vacuum clamping. Depending on the worktable size, up to 84 zones can be integrated into the matrix table to provide fast, efficient changeover from one board size to the next.

FEATURE Based on the workpiece size, the machine automatically selects the table field occupation, the vacuum is activated in the required area and is effective where it is needed. The areas are optimally matched to the established range of boards. Gapless changeover between left and right table sides The vacuum fields are assigned to the table sides and can be controlled individually. While workpieces are being routed on one side of the table, they can be loaded on the other side. This makes for gapless, highly efficient production, saving time and money. Telford based Activ Projects Limited recently invested in a new CENTATEQ N-210 and workshop supervisor, Pete Blakelock, explained how happy they were with the nesting CNC: “The new CENTATEQ N-210 CNC processing centre is fast, efficient, and very easy to use. We opted for the 4-axis model which does all we wanted and more. Having the ability to use aggregates for horizontal routing applications as well as being able to use a blowing aggregate, gives us total flexibility You can’t fault the workpiece finish quality; it is absolutely superb. If you’re looking to take your nesting CNC capabilities to the next level, this could be the machine for you.” HOMAG CENTATEQ N-510 gantry-processing centre Like its sister machine, the N-210, the CENTATEQ N-510 is designed for machining and dividing of panel-shaped materials with waste reduction as a focus. In addition to the classical nested based fields of application for the production of carcass furniture, or the dividing and finishing of furniture fronts, the N-510 can also be offered as a 5 axis variant. This enables the manufacture of stair stringers and even door leaves to be processed easily. Fourteen various automation concepts, which are easy to connect via ‘plug & play’ systems, offer subsequent additions to the machine. Meanwhile, a comprehensive choice of drill blocks and tool changers provide a high degree of customer

led diversity. With a focus on sustainability, changeover times have been reduced, and chip extraction and vacuum suction have also been optimised. The CENTATEQ N-510 offers 5-axis processing via the DRIVE5CS head. This provides more processing versatility and, thanks to a new overall height capability in the Z-direction, material thickness of up to 260 mm can easily be handled. VERSATILITY AND SPEED The advanced tool changer has space for 8, 14 or 22 tools delivering significant timesaving and flexibility during processing. Tool changing can be done in parallel with the dividing or drilling of panels. There are also 18 different drilling gears available in various combinations consisting of vertical and horizontal spindles and grooving saws. CNC machines from HOMAG’s extensive nesting range have the ability to be used as stand-alone machines, in through feed higher output cells, or even be fully integrated into automated board storage systems for optimum efficiency. In conclusion Simon Brooks emphasised the versatility and ease of operation of the new nesting machines: “The CENTATEQ N-210 and N-510 are controlled via the latest version of our powerTouch user interface. Consequently, these HOMAG CNCs are now even faster and more intuitive to use, achieving time savings of up to 30%. “The two new models have made significant advancements in the capabilities and performance of CNC nesting centres. They are faster, more efficient and produce even better quality finished parts. If you’re thinking of replacing an aging nesting CNC, check out how the new CENTATEQ N-210 and N-510 nesting machines can benefit your business and generate more profit.” For a demonstration or more information on the range of HOMAG CNC nesting machinery and software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

CASE STUDY

Extractly installed a total of nine PowerMASTER™ VSD units at JTC – each unit delivers precise control over the power consumed by each individual main fan

ECOGATE ® DELIVERS SUBSTANTIAL SAVINGS FOR JTC FURNITURE Extractly Ltd has retro-fitted Ecogate® ‘on-demand’ control technology across an extensive dust extraction system serving JTC Furniture Group’s manufacturing plant. Over the last four decades JTC Furniture has grown to become one of the UK’s leading high-volume manufacturers and suppliers of fitted kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture for the Local Authority and Housing Association property sector, as well as for private property developers, student accommodation and MoD facilities. Established in 1986, in Dundee, Scotland, the company now operates from two sites in the city, as well as a third satellite office in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. Since 1995 the company’s headquarters, warehousing, distribution and mainstream manufacturing facility have been housed in the historic Camperdown Works; formerly Timex Corporation’s flagship factory. JTC Furniture produces hundreds of thousands of MDF/MFC laminated cabinets, panels and worktops every year, for both new-build and refurbishment projects, as well as undertaking specialist manufacturing for specific applications in education, healthcare and washrooms. Powered by a total of 9 main fans, consuming over 300kW of electricity per hour, the dust extraction system at Camperdown has the capacity to extract vast volumes of dust-laden air from the workplace. However, delivering this powerful capability comes at a high cost and, with energy costs rising to an all-time high, JTC’s Senior Maintenance Engineer, David Verrall, was asked to investigate the feasibility of installing Ecogate technology and the potential impact that it could have on future energy usage.

Camperdown Works still indicated that worthwhile savings could be made by capitalising on the reduced demand for extraction during operators’ breaks and during loading and unloading operations and, significantly, it showed that some equipment actually only needed extraction for minimal periods during the working day.” In addition, although constantly powered up, some of the production lines at JTC are not continuously creating waste dust, and so don’t require continuous extraction. In the vast majority of installations, Ecogate® technology controls the demand for extraction based on a machine’s on or off status, but the technology is also capable of determining extraction requirements on a production line using a range of alternative ‘proof of cut/dust’ monitoring devices. “Installing the Ecogate® system at JTC has had a huge effect”, says David Verrall. “Just a few weeks after the system was commissioned, evidence of the promised financial savings were clear to see, but noise levels in the factory are also markedly lower, and the amount of airborne dust in the factory has also been reduced significantly.” At JTC, Extractly installed two of the latest Ecogate® greenBOX® Nxt controllers; one monitoring demand and

As Jake Oldfield, Extractly’s Sales Director, explains: “JTC’s electricity bills were eye-wateringly high and, because the company’s focus is on volume production, machinery utilisation is very high.” Ecogate’s On-Demand technology is eminently capable of achieving substantial energy savings when machinery utilisation varies throughout the working day, but respectable savings can also be achieved when machines effectively appear to be working non-stop. “Even though key equipment was operating virtually continuously, findings from our energy appraisal survey at

These highly intelligent controllers have the capacity to efficiently control the operation of an extraction system with multiple main fans and up to 72 individual workstations. The greenBOX® controllers continuously monitor extraction demand across the factory and, in real-time, determine the exact amount of airflow each fan must provide to fulfil that demand. As well as controlling the extraction system, real-time performance data shows how much electricity the fan motor is consuming, confirms filter pressure, air volume and air velocity at dampers, branches, or for the entire system and, to ensure employees’ safety, minimal airflow is managed across the entire ductwork system to reduce the risk of fire or explosion. Machine utilisation is monitored across the factory and, from data received, the greenBOX® controllers determine the optimum speed for each of the 9 fans, and the motor speed for each fan is in turn controlled by an individual Ecogate® PowerMaster Variable Speed Drive Unit (VSD). power for each of the 9 fans, which range from 45kW to 75kW. Ecogate’s greenBOX® Nxt has an industrial PC onboard, with Linux-based operating system, and a built-in web server provides remote access for fast, automated update of both Ecogate® and system software. In addition, the greenBOX® Nxt can automatically stop and start the extraction system at both ends of the working day – system performance is checked at start-up, and confirmed by text or email, and the greenBOX® Nxt will message again at the end of the day to confirm successful system shutdown. In conclusion, David Verrall commented: “Extractly’s engineers did an excellent job; the installation took just a week and a half to complete. Based on the savings achieved so far, we expect to see a return on our investment in around 20 months and, as well as the financial savings, we’ll also be reducing our carbon footprint by around 20 tonnes of CO2 per year. Just from our experience here at JTC, I would say installing an Ecogate system could be a gamechanger for any woodworking business.”

CASE STUDY AXYZ PROVIDE SOLUTIONS FOR RC MOTORHOMES

Formed by Ricard Churchill, RC Motorhomes Ltd is a renowned manufacturer and supplier of luxury motorhomes, catering to the needs of discerning travellers seeking comfort and style on the road. To meet the demands of their highly specialised industry, RC Motorhomes has turned to AXYZ, a leading provider of CNC routers and cutting solutions. This case study delves into how AXYZ’s routers have revolutionised RC Motorhomes’ manufacturing processes and improved their position in the market. “In 2017, I was keen to improve production of our motorhomes interior fixings and furniture using newer ‘digital’ technology and remove many of the issues/inconsistencies that occurred from cutting and routing materials by hand. My first machine the 4008 series with a processing area of 1.5m x 2.4m was therefore introduced. Realising, the benefits that I had anticipated; I took the decision to take on a larger machine capable of enhancing production of our larger exterior materials in 2022 which was the 8022 Infinite with a processing area of 2.6m x 3m. Both have helped to ‘future-proof’ production moving forward” explained Richard Churchill. Before integrating AXYZ Ltd routers, RC Motorhomes faced several manufacturing challenges:

resulting in material optimisation, contributing to cost savings and environmental sustainability. d. Customisation: RC Motorhomes struggled to efficiently produce customised components for individual clients. AXYZ routers allow for quick and easy adaptation to custom designs and specifications, enabling RC Motorhomes to meet individual client needs efficiently. AXYZ provided RC Motorhomes with a customised CNC router solution that addressed these challenges effectively: “I use the machines to cut all of my interior and exterior materials, including fixings, furniture, main body panels, partitions/walls etc. The use of the machines has enhanced production in all of these areas, much less time is taken and consistency is at a much higher level. I am able to store all of my design/material dimension detail digitally and recycle it as and when required, cutting/routing is more accurate with minimal error, resulting in less needing to be ‘re-done’ and a reduction in waste material,” said Richard Churchill. With the introduction of the AXYZ routers, RC Motorhomes harnessed the capabilities of AXYZ routers in various applications including:

a. Precision Cutting: Crafting intricate interior and exterior components for motorhomes requires a high degree of precision and accuracy, which was difficult to achieve with manual methods. AXYZ routers are equipped with stateof-the-art technology, ensuring precise and consistent cuts even for complex designs.

Interior Components: The routers were instrumental in shaping and cutting interior components like cabinetry, countertops and wall panels to precision thus ensuring a luxurious and well-finished interior. Exterior Panels: AXYZ routers helped craft exterior panels, awnings and other components with consistent quality and accuracy.

b. Inefficiency: The traditional manual cutting and routing methods were time-consuming, labour-intensive and hindered the company’s production capacity. By automating the cutting and routing processes, AXYZ routers significantly reduced production times and labour costs, resulting in a vast increase in efficiency.

Customisation: The routers facilitated rapid customisation, allowing RC Motorhomes to offer tailor-made solutions for their customers with customisation capability: RC Motorhomes can now efficiently cater to the unique requirements of individual clients enabling them to expand their market reach.

c. Material Waste: Inefficient cutting methods resulted in higher material wastage, affecting both costs and sustainability efforts. The routers’ intelligent nesting and programming capabilities minimised material wastage

RESULTS AND BENEFITS OF IMPLEMENTING AXYZ ROUTERS. The implementation of AXYZ routers brought about a series of remarkable outcomes for RC Motorhomes. Improvement

28

www.p-j-production.com

CASE STUDY in areas of production has increased by approximately 50% when compared to previous ‘hand-based’ tooling methods used pre-2017. This enabled them to redirect/reinvest resource to positively impact other areas of the business, such as new design, fit-out, servicing and retrofit. The efficiency the machines offer has greatly reduced many of the variables the company had little control over. Error rates were reduced and coupled with the natural time saving, there has been a large positive impact. Also reduced labour costs and material wastage contributed to cost savings, boosting the company’s bottom line and the minimised material wastage aligned with RC Motorhomes’ sustainability goals. Increased efficiency, via automating processes, has enabled RC Motorhomes to significantly reduced production time, allowing them to fulfil orders more swiftly, resulting in shorter lead times and thereby increasing production capacity. The enhanced precision cutting of the components exhibited by AXYZ routers, resulted in improving the overall quality of RC Motorhomes’ motorhomes. Errors and imperfections have been greatly reduced enabling the company to work inside much smaller tolerances due to the accuracy and precision of the machines, which in turn has reduced time spent reworking or performing corrections. More complex working has become easier and more time efficient as they have been able to reduce some of the variables and risks present in their previous working processes, mainly due to less ‘human’ involvement. The purchasing of the larger router meant RC Motorhomes moved to a larger site to incorporate the machine with the 7m bed, a commitment that was a challenge across the business, due to the wealth of changes that it brought to everyone involved. The physical size of the machine and size of materials it can cut/route has meant the company had to modify the methods/techniques it uses, with some designs changing due to the capabilities of the new technology. They continue to try and optimise as much as they can by constantly looking for improvements and new processes. This has included increasing their workforce and putting some of those employees through training to operate/ maintain the machines correctly. RC Motorhome has had

to reprioritise some aspects of production in line with the speeds that the new machine offers and therefore certain aspects of production processes have also had to change, which has had an impact on other areas, such as supply. When asked how do employees at RC Motorhomes adapt to working alongside the AXYZ machines, and what additional training or skill development was necessary Richard said: “All those who I had planned to operate the machines initially were present during the installations and received training/instruction from the AXYZ representative present at the time. Seemingly this has been enough for us to utilise the machinery to meet our needs, and since then I have ensured any knowledge is given to anyone else who requires it. AXYZ aftersales teams have been on hand to help when contacted, but this has been minimal, with appropriate advice/resolution received each time. I currently have no outstanding issues or needs in order to operate machinery as required.” The INFINITE router is a highly configurable CNC machine that is suitable for one-off, small batch production as well as high volume and high productivity applications, including woodworking, plastic fabrication, engineering plastic machining and so much more. For a wide range of routing operations, one can choose from high-speed spindles ranging from 5HP to 15HP. For knife cutting, choose from a tangential knife, which can be used for creasing and folding applications or an oscillating knife which can be used to process soft goods material. Looking to the future RC Motorhomes is currently more than satisfied with the benefits from its current machines/ set-up offers and is constantly working to optimise the use of machinery to its full potential. There are no immediate plans to automate further due to the bespoke ‘coach-built’ nature of the product. However, they wouldn’t rule out the possibility if more ‘mainstream’ builds were required in the future and/or if their production line was expanded. The integration of AXYZ Ltd routers into RC Motorhomes’ manufacturing processes has proved to be a game-changer, enabling precision, efficiency, cost savings and customisation that have elevated the company’s position in the luxury motorhome industry. AXYZ Ltd routers have become an indispensable tool in their quest to provide top-quality, customised motorhomes to their clientele.

CASE STUDY “BUYING A WOOD WASTE HEATER IS THE EASIEST INVESTMENT DECISION WE’VE EVER MADE!” A West Midlands joinery company has purchased a new wood waste heater to help lower the business’s carbon footprint and save money in the process. Midland Mouldings is a family business, with three generations of experience in the industry. The business has been established since 1991, supplying joinery services and timber mouldings from its manufacturing base in Brownhills, near Walsall. When Midlands Mouldings existing wood waste heater needed to be replaced, the company started looking at the heaters produced in the UK by Wood Waste Technology, and contacted the business to find out more.

disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.

Managing Director of Midlands Mouldings, Tom Williams explains: “At Midland Mouldings, we’re committed to being as sustainable as possible with everything that we do. That’s why we’ve enjoyed the positive environmental benefits of owning a wood waste heater, to recycle all our wood offcuts and create heat for the factory. We’d heard great things about Wood Waste Technology’s heaters, so rather than re-purchasing the same machine from the original supplier, we ordered a WT10 instead. “We’ve been delighted with the new heater. As it is newer, it’s so much more efficient than our older model. The new heater can heat the whole factory, whereas there were always a few cold patches that the heat didn’t reach with the old heater. It’s now a much nicer temperature for our team of ten people to work in. “Whilst our main driver for the purchase was to be more self-sufficient and sustainable, we can’t ignore the huge cost advantages that a wood waste heater gives. There is no other use for the offcuts, so, without the wood waste heater, they would simply have to be disposed of. This way, they have a positive use, to heat the factory. Buying a wood waste heater is the easiest investment decision we’ve ever made, with such a great payback. We couldn’t be happier with our experience of using Wood Waste Technology. The wood waste heater does everything promised, but it’s not just about the product. From the team in the office to the engineers who installed it, everyone has been so friendly and helpful, making the whole experience an absolute pleasure.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “From our view, once a business has experienced the benefits of a wood waste heater, they will never want to be without one again! And especially in the current economic climate when businesses are trying to reduce operating costs and expenditure. We’re thrilled that the team at Midland Mouldings is so pleased with the new heater.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste

WEINIG UK IN-HOUSE EVENT: THE SMALL WORKSHOP It’s been said that the digital transformation holds the key to the future of manufacturing and for those manufacturers already adopting digitalisation in their workplace, increases in efficiency, performance and productivity are easy to quantify. However, for some companies, particularly smaller manufacturers, being able to invest in new machinery and the latest technology can feel somewhat out of reach. There is a myth that the costs involved are too prohibitive and the skills gap is already too wide for many to see a return on their investment but Weinig UK is setting out to dispel this myth with its three-day Small Workshop open-house.

need to run a competitive and profitable business both today and in the future. Our Small Workshop event is part and parcel of this and centres around the MELTS concept: More Efficiency Less Traditional Skill. By showcasing the latest machines and software solutions for the smaller workshop, visitors will have all the information they need at their fingertips and benefit from tailored machinery demonstrations and dedicated one-on-one time with Weinig’s solid wood experts who will be on hand to help answer any technical and practical questions that may arise on the day.”

From the 5th-7th March, dynamic-thinking businesses are invited to Weinig UK’s Abingdon-based showroom to explore compact automation at its best and to be introduced to simple and cost-effective solutions that make technology and automation a viable solution for all – even when facing a skills gap. With tailored machinery demonstrations taking place throughout the event on the new Cube 3 four-sided planer, Profimat 30 automatic planer and moulder and Weinig’s Unicut P optimised, this is your opportunity to see how easy it is to take your production processes to the next level.

To book your place at the event please visit www. weinig.co.uk or get in touch with your local Weinig UK representative.

Mark Smith, Regional Sales Manager for Weinig UK says: “In 2024, technology is inescapable in modern-day manufacturing but it can feel overwhelming to take the next step. We want to help manufacturers break through this barrier by improving their understanding of the technology that has been designed especially for businesses like theirs and help them build the skills and processes they

CASE STUDY HOMAG SAWTEQ B-400 BEAM SAW: THE PERFECT ‘FIT’ FOR UNIVERSAL WOOD PRODUCTS

“Ten thousand square feet may sound like a big area until you have to fit in a piece of plant like the HOMAG SAWTEQ B-400,” explains Martin Cossington, managing director at Universal Wood Products Ltd. He continues, “Given its capabilities, the saw itself is relatively compact. However, when you consider the in-feed space needed to cope with boards up to 5.49m long, plus the area required to remove the processed strips, the size of the challenge becomes abundantly clear.”

Universal Wood Products (UWP) manufactures primed MDF mouldings and profiled components at its Romford facility. The company’s customers comprise of timber merchant groups such as Travis Perkins, Huws Grey and James Latham Timber which account for 30 per cent of its volume. The remaining 70 per cent of business is spread across a diverse range of house developers and architects. The company has also established a name for itself with its bespoke capabilities. UWP’s products have been specified for prestigious projects such as The Shard and the British Library. And, whilst the majority of clients are based in London and the south-east, it also has customers further afield in Liverpool and Manchester.

Martin Cossington again, “For many years we had a Japanese multi-ripsaw which had performed well for us, but was approaching the end of its life. There was another issue as we discovered the ripsaw would not be compliant with upcoming Health and Safety Executive (HSE) requirements. “As a replacement, we decided to invest in a second-hand saw which we were told could handle our needs. To cut a long story short, that turned out not to be the case and so we began a process of searching for a suitable new beam saw. “Obviously, a saw is integral to our business, and so as a stopgap we outsourced the cutting of our boards to a third party whilst we did our due diligence to find the right saw solution for UWP. “We narrowed the search down to two manufacturers, but ultimately it was HOMAG that came out on top. Our decision wasn’t down to price – the two quotes we had were very similar. What really impressed us was the attitude and approach of everyone at HOMAG, they were so knowledgeable, open and friendly.

Martin Cossington with his HOMAG SAWTEQ B-400

“The HOMAG area sales manager, James Mason and senior technical engineer, Charles Smith made several visits to our factory. They wanted to ensure we specified a solution that would not only fit and be operable in the available space, but would also increase our throughput. “After many laser measurements and much scratching of heads, a plan was agreed. Before proceeding, however, we talked to a number of large suppliers of MDF moulding boards who all use HOMAG equipment and their glowing feedback gave us the confidence to place the order for the SAWTEQ B-400 beam saw. “Despite the confines of our facility, the installation of the machine went very smoothly thanks to HOMAG’s meticulous planning. In just over two weeks from delivery, the saw was up and running. The HOMAG engineers did a great job and left no stone unturned in training our staff on the new kit.” A springboard for success with a 20% uplift in yield

“The HOMAG SAWTEQ has given us a springboard into processing various full format sizes from all the MDF producers. It has optimised our production, delivering an increase in yield of at least 20 per cent. “More importantly perhaps, it has given us increased flexibility to service our broad range of customers with high quality products delivered speedily. The saw secures our future for the specials and made to order market in which we have established such a strong reputation over the years,” concludes Cossington. INDUSTRY JOINERYSOFT LAUNCHES COMMERCIAL DOOR & FIRE DOOR INDUSTRY SPECIFIC WEBSITE Commercial door and fire door manufacturers have for a long time been overlooked by software companies who have included them into a platform of catch all software for joinery. Joinerysoft not only recognises this industry’s differing needs but in conjunction with leading manufacturers has introduced specialised software designed for this industry.

is incredibly accurate and shows great detail like hinge positions, ironmongery and even signage. No matter if it is one door or one thousand doors the software takes it in its stride. Wrapped doors, doors with multiple cores, multiple materials - all possible. Make revisions, batch doors into manageable chunks like floors of a building, schedule jobs, excel import/export, track timings, and much more.

Written specifically for Commercial Door & Fire Door manufacturers Joinerysoft’s Commercial & Fire Door software addresses key concerns for compliance with regulations and also offers flexibility to cater for the limitless options of cores and materials required. Notwithstanding the custom nature of this product, Joinerysoft also offers the reliability of over 17 years producing software for the joinery industry, guaranteeing ease of use, clear industry terminology and proven customer support.

“I think it’s easier because the last system that we used literally just said FD60 Door, and customers would ask, ‘Oh have you included this size vision panel, or have you included this?” At least now they can see that we’ve added a longer vision panel or a shorter one or put top lights in it. They can visually see the specification of the door they are getting in the quote” JCK/ Unity Group

Joinerysoft’s Commercial Door software takes the job from initial enquiry all the way to delivery. The custom built CRM tracks the enquiries straight from your website, keeps your customer correspondence and files all in one place. The 3D solid modelling engine, which Joinerysoft built from the ground up allows you to see your doors in great detail. Following your exact tools and processes it

Joinerysoft has gone one step further in making it even easier for customers to find exactly what they are looking for by introducing a new website specifically for commercial door and fire door manufacturers. Its new website www. commercialdoorsoftware.com brings everything to one place and saves time for manufacturers looking for commercial door and fire door specific software. As specialists in software for the joinery industry Joinerysoft believes

INDUSTRY its entire portfolio of products is awesome, but if you’re only looking for software specific for your needs, you don’t want to trawl through multiple products that aren’t relevant. It further believes that its software for the Commercial Door & Fire Door industry can stand on its own. Fortunately you don’t just need to take Joinerysoft’s word for it, they already have an impressive list of commercial door and fire door customers who are happy to recommend its software. “Fire doors aren’t particularly complicated but there are a large number of variables that mean that customers can end up getting confused. We needed to find a friendly way of displaying what the customer is buying without using lots of words on paper. A year ago we had a demonstration of Joinerysoft’s Commercial & Fire Door module and knew this was just what we were looking for. Part of Joinerysoft’s JMS 3D Pro software the 3D visual imagery jumped out. It makes it easy to price large numbers of fire doors and gives customers a clear idea of what they are getting”
