Events “On the Leading EDGEBanding”: SCM is leading the way towards a new era in flexible edgebanding systems The SCM event organised at the Edgebanding Tech Lab in Thiene (Vicenza) was a great success. The new “batch 1” flexible edgebanding systems for Industry 4.0 were presented. A full programme of seminars was also organised for participating companies, on key market trends combined with SCM technologies. The “On the Leading EDGEBanding” event organised by SCM came to a close on a high note with a significant turnout from all over the world (Europe, China, the Far East and South America) and key large-scale furniture producers of international renown who came to see for themselves the new SCM “batch 1” and Industry 4.0 flexible industrial edgebanding systems, which held centre stage during the event. Flexibility, integration and automation: these are the cornerstones of the new “Stefani Cell” range, designed and developed to fully interpret and meet the demands for efficiency, high production and customisation from today’s market. The edgebander or squaring edgebander machine is integrated into cells and plants fitted with rollers, panel return devices, automatic loading and unloading systems,

assisted by robots and fitted with IoT sensors to guarantee immediate digital services in support of an optimal functioning of the machine. Industry visitors showed considerable interest in the high innovative level of these new solutions. They also appreciated the wider objective of this event: to offer a general overview of key furniture and design trends for which the industrial edgebanding process is increasingly more decisive, with demonstrations and detailed explanations. “Today’s edgebanding is a process which can make a genuine difference to the aesthetic value of an end product - explains Fabio Cernoia, Business Manager for SCM Edgebanding -. This is why we focus on always giving greater added value to our clients in the furniture industry with applications which not only guarantee high productivity and flexibility for a simple, rapid machining of increasingly smaller batches, but can also ensure that a quality finishing and a great look is achieved on all kinds of panels”. This is the new SCM solutions’ aim as well as the vast programme of workshops organised in collaboration with industry technological partners. Four topics were covered:

Panel & Joinery Production - January / February 2020

Events glasses, the purchase of spare parts on-line, predictive maintenance and numerous other services to considerably increase the effectiveness and efficiency of its production plant.

Threespine Click Furniture Technology, the furniture with excellent results, which can easily be assembled in one click. SCM has designed new customised technological solutions for this new market trend, based on the client’s specific needs;

STEFANI CELL E “Stefani Cell E” is the “entry level” cell in the range, for edgebanding previously squared panels. It combines the advantages of a customised production and large volumes with a compact overall design and, above all, with an accessible investment even for SMEs. The multiple configurations available allow for each specific need to be covered in terms of productivity and machining. Feeder, Robot or additional movements can be combined to offer maximum flexibility and customisation. In particular, in the RobotLoop version, the “Stefani Cell E” is configured with the anthropomorphic Robot for a complete automatic management of the panel loading/unloading work.

Eco-friendly furniture, with demonstrations and detailed explanations of edgebanding with veneered edges, 100% recycled panels, SCM Slimline systems for a zero glue line and Stefani Shape Technology softforming applications for timber shaped profiles; the future of polyurethane glues with a study of less harmful PU glues which are longer lasting and reduce emissions and waste; new trends on edges, with the presentation of SCM solutions for decorative edgebanding with attractive results on the panel. Crystal Decor is a clear example, for an exclusive glass effect laminate.

- Fast axis high technology in line with future market scenarios. Type, colour, edge thickness, position and mortise depth, handling of the protective film and panel dimensions: the highly versatile “Stefani Cell E” allows you to continually feed-in and change all these parameters as part of the production flow without it being interrupted. - Simple, integrated and versatile: the multiple configurations available (reloop with robot” or “reloop with motorised belts”) mean all specific needs in terms of production and machining are met. Feeder, robot or additional movements can be combined to offer maximum flexibility.

“STEFANI CELL”: THE NEW RANGE OF SCM CELLS FOR “BATCH 1” “Stefani Cell” is the new generation of flexible cells with edgebander and squaring edgebanding machine for “batch 1” machining, with high tech solutions requiring minimum investment: • “Stefani Cell E” for machining pre-squared panels; • “Stefani Cell S” for machining panels to be squared and semi-automatic feed; • “Stefani Cell H and H+” high productivity for machining panels pre squared or to be squared and with automatic feed.

- Whether it be in self-learning mode, with Bar Code/QR code or with supervisor, “Stefani Cell E” is programmed to be set at any level of logical and physical integration. - New automation to accelerate business: with the new fast, reliable “pickback bridge system” for the automatic return of panels, the panel is automatically rotated to speed up the next in-feed. It will also be possible to unload at the end of the cycle in masked time with the next loop load. - No errors and a guarantee of always feeding in the panels in the right direction, thanks to the SIDE FINDER technology, which shows how to position the panel from a display in the operator’s area, so that it can be correctly machined.

The range’s software has also been modernised with Maestro Active edge and Maestro Active watch, the new supervisor with HMI and shared structure with all the SCM machines, recipient of the prestigious RedDot Award 2019 (Brands & Communication Design 2019 category). Of fundamental importance is also the integration with Maestro connect, the system for collecting and analysing the data from SCM technologies which, thanks to the constant analysis of the data being produced by the machines, grants instant access to a wide range of services such as remote technical support with augmented reality

STEFANI CELL S “Stefani Cell S” is the “all-in-one” square-edging cell designed for mid-range investments with the aid of a single operator to provide clear business advantages from the outset, especially companies focusing on a semi-intensive production and/or with varying production batches. - Compact and efficient: with a single operator and a cell of just 85 square metres in its basic configuration, it allows for work to be done on parts coming both from the premeasured and squared nesting cycle and from the sheet

Events cutting, and which therefore require the parallelism/ squaring to be reset. This occurs thanks to the innovative semi-automatic feeder device with panel squaring that facilitates and allows for the longitudinal and transversal feeding even of large sized panels. - Modular and efficient: “Stefani Cell S” is designed to be easily integrated into different operating situations thanks in addition to its integration with the new pickback bridge system that automatically unloads the machined panels into a stack. This brings with it considerable advantages in logistics terms and overall machining times with full automation for the return of the panel as far as the operator loading area. - Exact and dynamic: the specific technical solutions provided guarantee maximum quality when making the final assembly of all the furniture parts, even the largest pieces like the sides and cupboard doors. Repeatability and machining accuracy become a safe added value for each component in the piece of furniture. STEFANI CELL H and STEFANI CELL H+ Maximum customisation, high productivity levels and excellent machining quality. “Stefani Cell H” and “Stefani Cell H+” are the new edgebanding and squaring-edgebanding cells capable of bringing together all these advantages under one solution. The cells can be configured with different kinds of panel feeder systems - semi-automatic or fully automatic - and are structured according to technical solutions, level of investment and efficiency and are designed to guarantee both industrial level production volumes as well as maximum diversification of the production batch.

10

“Stefani Cell H and H+” ensure 100% efficient machining of components for furniture items for every part of the home (kitchens, living rooms, sleeping areas, bathrooms, wardrobes and studies) with considerable advantages. - Instant production and financially advantageous both for batches with single panels as well as for average standard stacks, without the need to stop production for a change of format, thickness, edge type and gluing quality that occur on a regular basis during a machining shift. - Instant availability, even on mobile devices, of the machining information relating to each single panel, wherever it is in the cycle, thanks to the continuous tracking provided by the supervision software. - Panel flow and movement optimisation handled and synchronised with company network data. “These new SCM flexible “batch 1” edgebanding systems prove our ability to generate sustainable, quality innovation for all companies seeking advanced and flexible solutions for their production process - comments Luigi De Vito, SCM Division Director -. We have shared the latest technological solutions for the industry with clients and partners right where they take shape, at the heart of the SCM production site in Thiene. It was recently extended to 30,000 m2 (+35%) to guarantee machining lines and areas that are increasingly “leaner” and offer “greater performance”.

Software ALPHACAM Ensures GB Kent’s Brush With Success Unique Machine Tool for “World’s Finest” Brush Manufacturer A company widely recognised as the world’s finest brush manufacturer produces its handles on a custom-built CNC machine tool, which is one of only two in the world, and programmed by ALPHACAM software.

length, to 400 mm, and need between two to 20 cuts. “Even machining six of our larger and most complex bath brushes, which is full of curves, angles and different radiuses only takes around 25 minutes.”

The CMS Triposto router has three beds on each of two tables, with eight tool holders on each head. It enables GB Kent and Sons to manufacture six wooden handles of any shape in one quick cycle and one operation, as well as providing the absolute micron accuracy required in the wooden handles to ensure the bristles fit perfectly.

He says if the work were done on traditional CNC machines it would require several set-ups for individual operations, but with ALPHACAM powering the Triposto, it generally produces finished brushes with all required radiuses, holes, countersinking and profiles, by machining half the brush on one bed, then transferring it to the second station for the remaining work, leaving no secondary machining other than finishing.

Kent’s Chief Engineer Darren Neep explains that the cycle time for simple shapes can be as short as one minute, while an average complex shape with considerable 5-axis work can take up to 15 minutes. “But as the router cuts six brushes at a time – three on each of the two tables – we can produce six simple brushes every three minutes.” He says ALPHACAM is vital to their complete CAD and CAM operations, as they have more than 60 different products, including hair brushes, bath brushes, clothes brushes, and shoe brushes, each requiring individual programs. The brushes, made from several woods, including Beech, Cherry, Satinwood, Ebony and Sapele, vary from around 100 mm in

As well as optimising productivity, the machine also provides the tight tolerances their CNC filling machine needs to insert the bristles. “Most brush manufacturers use what’s known as a bar anchor to fix their bristles, but because we’re more quality focused, our bristles are fixed with a 9 mm staple, which requires that the thickness and profiles are accurate to within 0.5 mm. This has to be absolutely right, or the bristles won’t stay in the board.” That quality is the reason the company has survived since it was founded in 1777, and has held the Royal Warrant

Software covering nine monarchs’ reigns, from King George lll, through to the current Queen. Quality and speed of production were the driving force behind GB Kent investing in the Triposto purpose-built machine and ALPHACAM. Technical Manager Steve Davis, who manages I.T. and production, says that previously some of the handles were manufactured in-house with ageing equipment, and some were produced in China, but both were causing quality issues. He says an ageing workforce meant they were starting to lose the skills required to run the old machinery…and they also wanted to bring all production in-house so they could put ‘Made In England’ on their brushes. Another factor was the need for shorter lead times so they can react to

customers’ demands much faster. “Our craftsmanship and unprecedented quality has held our reputation for almost 250 years. Combining this latest hightech manufacturing process with our traditional methods, means every brush leaving our factory is still the world’s finest.” ALPHACAM manages all aspects of production, from CAD, through CAM, to the post processing. Darren Neep creates 3D models of each brush in ALPHACAM Designer, then imports them into the CAM function to create the toolpaths and post process them to the Triposto. “I can generally complete a program within two hours, and then there’s another hour on the machine to prove it out and make any tweaks…and then we’re ready to start cutting.” Jigs and fittings are also created in ALPHACAM Designer, and once they’ve been transferred to the CAM functionality, he runs a simulation to ensure there’s no conflict with toolpaths, that may cause collisions. In conclusion, Steve Davis says: “We initially opted for ALPHACAM’s 3+2-axis package, but subsequently upgraded to the full Advanced 5-axis module. This has been vital in helping us go from a company with no CNC experience less than two years ago, to now producing around 800 high quality brushes a day.”

Software Production Software Turns Designs into Reality for Daw Green Clients Royalty and Houses of Parliament Amongst High End Fitouts To say that Alan Ruddock, Works Director of Daw Green Contracts Ltd., is passionate about the woodworking industry, would be an understatement. He built his own workshop in a shed when he was 14, and had woodworking tools for Christmas as a child, taking his own full set of tools into his ‘O’ Level woodworking exam. And he fully admits that if you cut him, he’d bleed sawdust. “It was just born within me,” he says. “When I started working in the industry, I couldn’t believe I was getting paid to do something I loved so much.” And now, he’s equally as passionate about ALPHACAM software which programs the company’s 3-axis SCM Record 125 router. As well as currently using ALPHACAM on every project the high-end shopfitting company works on, he is also expanding their use of CABINET VISION, which also drives the Record, through its Screen-To-Machine module. Manufacturing everything from counters to displays, stands, wall panelling, ceiling features, desks and storage units, anything with a curved shape goes through ALPHACAM. “We’ve also had CABINET VISION for a few years, but only recently started to really exploit it for carcases and pure cabinetry components.” Amongst their prestigious clients: the Trailfinders travel agency chain; Royalty, including Buckingham Palace, Holyrood Palace, Windsor Castle and Clarence House; and the Houses of Parliament.

“Because we only work at the real top end of the market, precision and quality is paramount for us. Our biggest challenge is the complexity of what we do, and with time being one of the major drivers of the industry, we’re always looking to save time, while still ensuring consistently high quality, particularly in the process of converting the original drawings into NC code for the machine tool. This is where CABINET VISION is starting to play an increasingly important role.” When they first invested in CABINET VISION it was part of a period of considerable change for the company, and the software was underutilised. Now, while ALPHACAM will continue to program complex components, he says a lot of the case work is better suited to CABINET VISION. “The difference is, once we import our CAD drawings into ALPHACAM we have to break down the individual components and redraw them in ALPHCAM, then insert all the holes and fixings. But CABINET VISION produces the panels for us from the CAD drawings, and this will save us a tremendous amount of time, while reducing the risk of human error. Those drawings show the entire shop, including all the other trades – air conditioning, electrical, and flooring – and we extrapolate the cabinets, and treat them as individuals.” He says further time savings come from CABINET VISION’s parametric function. “Basically we make boxes – a counter with cupboards and drawers is simply a box with other

boxes inside, and as we’ve already invested time upfront with building up libraries and construction methods, we simply drag and drop a cabinet into the job, and when we edit one length, it automatically changes the other dimensions. “Sometimes those boxes have complex shaped components, and we’ll need ALPHACAM to program those toolpaths, but the majority are now put directly through CABINET VISION now.” As well as accuracy and time savings, he says CABINET VISION offers another huge benefit for the workshop: labelling. As well as the software producing drawings showing all the panels coming off the router, Label-IT enables their operator to clearly visualise the panels, print labels at the machine, and then simply place them on the parts as they’re nested out. The screen is updated automatically to show which parts and panels have been completed. Information on the labels includes the client name, job number, description, and edge banding details. “This is particularly important for the shopfloor to take a pallet of parts and know which ones need to go to the edge bander, or directly to the bench for assembly as a finished

counter or desk. It’s like putting a jigsaw puzzle together with the box lid picture, as opposed to doing it without the lid.” In conclusion, Alan Ruddock says ALPHACAM has been valuable and integral to their processes for many years, and CABINET VISION is set to become of equal importance as they fully implement it. “The software turns designs into reality for our high-end customers. Without it, our production would simply stop.”

Finishing Cutlist Puts Its Trust In HOMAG UK For New Spraying Solution When Oxfordshire based Group, Cutlist and LangstaffEllis was looking to invest in an automated spray solution for its businesses one of the companies it turned to was HOMAG UK. Cutlist wanted a reliable, high quality automated spraying machine to offer its customers additional services; whilst Langstaff-Ellis was looking to gain control over previously outsourced spray finishing. “Cutlist was founded in 2014 to meet a demand for panel processing,” explains, Alex Langstaff-Ellis, joint owner of the business. He continues, “My business partner Edward Birks and I set up Langstaff-Ellis Limited as a bespoke cabinet maker in 2009. Fast- forward ten years and we’ve had multiple workshop moves driven by rapid growth to the point where we are now. “At Langstaff-Ellis, we serve a lot of high-end private individuals, but also some developers and commercial clients too. About five years ago we set up Cutlist as a panel processing supplier. This business cuts panels to size, edge bands them and sends them out as a kit for trade-based clients, including carpenters, joiners and cabinet makers. “Cutlist has experienced rapid growth too and it became clear that a spray machine would be advantageous to both companies.” The need for an automated spraying solution “The reason we considered an in-house spray solution was to gain control of our entire manufacturing process at Langstaff-Ellis. At that time, we were spending a lot of money on a third-party traditional hand spray service. “Not only was it expensive, but also it was difficult getting the parts to and from the supplier without damage occurring. In addition, it was very time consuming; we were reliant on his capacity and his ability to get things done to our timeframes. So we just weren’t in control of the process in the way we wanted to be.

investing in our own spray solution started to look a more effective solution. In addition to this, we recognised that there was a significant demand for Cutlist customers to have access to a primer and lacquer service for finished boards. “Our competitors weren’t offering that service with an automated machine so it made sense for us to fill the gap. For Cutlist, it’s now a unique selling point over the competition and it gives us the control we were looking for, not to mention a new profit centre for the business. “We didn’t want to go down the hand spray route because as a company, we are focused on automating as many of our processes as we can. Automation gives us consistency, reliability and ultimately, improved profit margins.” The decision to buy from HOMAG “When it came to investing in the spray machine we looked to see what the market had to offer. We’d previously invested in a HOMAG beam saw and CNC machine, both of which have given us tremendous confidence in them as a company. Despite this, we weren’t just going to roll over and pick HOMAG as the solution. “From our point of view it was vitally important that we carried out due diligence to ensure we chose the right long-term solution for our business. With this in mind we singled out HOMAG and one other potential supplier. We then supplied some test sample panels to both companies and visited each, scrutinising the outcomes to see which delivered the best results for us. “There wasn’t a big difference between the performances of the two machines. Where HOMAG did score, however, was their open and honest approach to the sales process. In addition, there were some aspects of the other party’s offer that we didn’t warm to, so that automatically swayed our decision towards HOMAG’s favour. “With HOMAG, we just had every confidence that they would deliver and support us for the years ahead. Whereas with the other company, we felt the future service support may not be as good. Specifying the right machine “As we were completely new to spraying, we had to put our confidence in HOMAG to work with us to specify the right machine for our business. Paul Mosley, the HOMAG area sales manager, was a great support throughout the purchasing process and all the advice that HOMAG gave us turned out to be spot on.

The conveyor fed SPRAYTEQ S-100 from Homag UK “The volume of business we were putting out meant that

20

“The throughput of the SPRAYTEQ is superb. It’s a conveyor fed machine so you can process high volumes of product very quickly, all with the same high quality finish. The continuity is excellent; you just can’t get that level of consistency with hand spraying. “Another advantage is that although we were effectively

Panel & Joinery Production - January / February 2020

Finishing novices at the spray game, the machine allowed us to learn how to program and set it up without having ten years of tradesman’s experience behind us. With a modicum of basic training, anyone can operate the machine and get identical quality results. “In addition, because the panels are running through the machine on a conveyor you don’t get any over-spraying on the underside of the panels. For traditional hand sprayers, this is a major issue; they would have to mask up the back of the panel before they sprayed the top side. “With our machine, we don’t have to do that because every panel is laid flat on a paper conveyor so the spray just doesn’t reach the underside. Consequently, not only does it save time, but it also saves paint – we’re told that the SPRAYTEQ S-100 is 20 per cent more efficient than hand spraying.” The SPRAYTEQ S-100 from HOMAG UK “The SPRAYTEQ S-100 is owned and operated by Cutlist. Once the panels have been cut and edged, they are sent to the spray machine for a coat of primer or lacquer. At this stage, we haven’t offered a colour top-coat service to our clients, but that is definitely something that we might add in future. “This facility is proving to be very popular with Cutlist customers; on top of this, however, Cutlist also serves our Langstaff-Ellis bespoke kitchens and furniture business. Here we do the whole package including top-coat colours and finish work. “With Langstaff-Ellis, we design kitchens and furniture using Cabinet Vision and, of course, the HOMAG machines ‘talk’ to Cabinet Vision very effectively. So the designs are sent

through the computer system to the HOMAG HPP 300 beam saw where the panels are cut and then a label is printed out for each panel with a barcode and product details for ongoing edge banding and CNC processing. “Our goal was to achieve as much automation as possible and we’ve made sure that, no matter how people order, whether through Cutlist or Langstaff-Ellis, the system works for both feeds of work.” A new partnership for HOMAG “One slight concern we had about going forward with HOMAG was we were fully aware that this was a new partnership triad between HOMAG, Makor and the Durr Group who supply all the pumps and guns. “Looking back, we needn’t have worried; everything was very open and transparent which really impressed me. The energy and positivity everyone has put into the deal has been great, we can’t fault it. “Operationally, the machine is both straight forward and intuitive. Our operator is from the automotive industry with no real woodworking experience, but within a month he was able to completely get to grips with the SPRAYTEQ. He can trouble shoot and make adjustments to solve any issue pretty much straight away. It is also very easy to clean and maintain which is another significant bonus. “Usually, when you buy a new piece of equipment, there is always something that the salesman tells you it will do, but in reality it won’t; I have to say, however, the SPRAYTEQ has delivered everything HOMAG promised, it is a superb piece of kit which has added a whole new dimension to both our businesses,” concludes Alex Langstaff-Ellis.

Adhesives Efficient Adhesive Solutions For Manufacturing James Thorpe, Sales Manager at Chemique Adhesives, describes a practical approach to streamlining manufacturing operations – with added peace of mind. If you’re a director or a manager in a manufacturing company, it may seem at times that you’re under intense pressure to increase performance and maintain high standards whilst also reducing operational costs. More often than not, achieving success relies upon the robustness of your supply chain. But for that supply chain to be truly unbreakable, every link needs to work closely with the next. Manufacturers work hard to choose the best suppliers for machines, equipment, consumables and service support. But even if these suppliers are great at their respective specialisms, sometimes things don’t go according to plan and when one of the links in the chain breaks, this leaves the manufacturer vulnerable to costly downtime. Let’s say for instance that you are using an adhesive dispensing machine in your production process. It’s perfectly possible that someone designed and manufactured the machine, someone else installed it, another company is supplying the adhesive and yet another one is providing servicing and spare parts whenever it malfunctions. Even if all these individual companies are top of their game, they may not have overall knowledge and understanding of how your entire process works, so the solution may not be optimised, and the multiple suppliers could be slow at putting things right when they go wrong. A better approach is to source, from a single supplier, a complete package that takes your manufacturing process from idea to production and beyond. Choosing a supplier that will listen to your challenges and devise tailored solutions is the first step. After that, working closely with the supplier ensures that your requirements are met every step of the way. The supplier should be able manage the design and commissioning of the new piece of machinery, then help you to get production underway by delivering training sessions for your employees. Consumables such as adhesives, sealants and solvents should be provided from the same company to ensure total compatibility and optimum performance. Your chosen supplier should also be able to offer regular servicing and support in case of breakdowns.

Recently, Chemique Adhesives were able to provide this kind of service and support to a leading panel manufacturer. Chemique were tasked with increasing output of panels by up to 20% and so were able to provide a tailored adhesive that would give the desired curing times, as well as design and install new equipment that could apply the adhesive more efficiently. By saving 20% on production time for the panels, the panel manufacturer was able to boost its overall productivity, increasing both its sales and its profit. As the new equipment has been designed with reliability in mind, downtime is minimised and, on the rare occasion a problem does occur, the service agreement included as part of the package ensures that it is fixed promptly and efficiently. It is this type of comprehensive package that helps high value manufacturers to remain competitive and maximise their productivity. Knowing that all aspects of the production line are covered – the equipment, adhesive, training, installation, service, supply of spares and components – also gives service users total peace of mind. Working with a single supplier for all aspects of adhesive usage in a business also allows a strong relationship to be built, whereby over time the supplier will accumulate knowledge that may well allow them to suggest further ways of improving speed and timings, reducing adhesive consumption and waste, increasing safety for workers and generally finding more efficient production methods. In short, the adhesive supplier’s holistic understanding of the way things work and the processes and goals within a factory will enable them to offer better and more tailored solutions. In fact, for over three decades, Chemique Adhesives have been providing the ‘Total Service Package’ ensuring that each and every customer receives the right product, the right application and the right service, time after time.

Case Study Reaching New Heights With Striebig Following the successful buy-out of a local competitor in December of 2018, custom-built exhibition stand designer and manufacturer, GH Display, is predicting its most successful year yet, as project work hits a record high. Consistently growing 30% year on year since 2013, the Peterborough-based, family-run company is on course to quadruple its weekly production rates in 2020 thanks to ongoing investment in its workforce and the installation of a new Striebig Compact 5207 vertical panel saw. “We pride ourselves on offering a complete service package,” begins John Hodson, Managing Director of GH Display. “We not only design and custom-build each component in-house, we also pre-assemble the entire exhibition stand in our workshop before transporting it to its location and building it again on-site to guarantee the very best results. It’s a military operation and if one part of the operation fails or holds us up in some way, it can easily lead to a domino effect. That’s why, when our old saw started to show signs of slowing down, we knew it was time to invest in a new wallsaw.” The company’s old saw was bought in 1995 and had served the company well but, following a move to new premises in 2018 and an increasing workload, the saw couldn’t keep up with demand. “I didn’t want this to have a negative impact on our production, so I began researching vertical panel saw manufacturers,” explains John. “I was taken aback by just how far these machines had come on since I was last in the market for one. To make a sound decision, I wanted to work with a company that could offer me honest advice and technical know-how. It was through a recommendation that I started to look into Striebig wallsaws and talk to their UK distributor, TM Machinery. I looked at several models with TM Machinery’s specialists and we spoke in detail about our company, our requirements and each machine’s capabilities. It was clear that the Striebig Compact was the right machine for us and six weeks later, it was installed in our workshop by a Striebig engineer.” As well as cutting standard MDF and Plywood panels ranging from 4-15mm in thickness and a small number of laminate sheets, one of John’s requirements was that his new vertical panel saw needed to cut 1.5m Foamex PVC board with a 1-10mm thickness. “Our old saw couldn’t accommodate large Foamex sheets, which led us to manually cut the sheets down using a jigsaw to fit the

saw,” explains John. “This process took time and could have easily led to mistakes being made. Now, with the Compact, we have the option of a 1.5 cut height, which gives us the flexibility to work easily with larger sheets, saving us time and reducing material wastage caused by inaccurate cuts. Its support rollers and easyto-use measuring system have also helped to simplify this process.” Future-proofing was also a key area of consideration for John and something TM Machinery was keen to pinpoint during the sales process. “Our increased production was certainly an important factor for all parties involved. We were cutting around 120 sheets of MDF and 40 sheets of Plywood per month but this number keeps increasing. The saw needed to cope with increased production, whilst also maintaining high levels of accuracy and a high quality finish for the foreseeable future. “The Compact has not disappointed and is already proving to be a valuable asset. The cut quality is far superior to our old saw. This means we know when we’re building a new stand design, each part will fit together perfectly, saving us a lot of time. It also means we don’t need to cut certain materials by hand to get the perfect finish. “The in-built extraction system is also a great feature. Dust around the saw is pretty much non-existent now thanks to the effective way the dust is taken off the blade during the cutting process. Not only does this make a cleaner environment for our workers, it also means we’re not having to spend much time cleaning the saw. These things may sound trivial but together, they make our business more efficient.” John adds, “We’ve taken on four new carpenters in the last year to keep up with demand and as a result, the Striebig is already cutting considerably more sheets than its predecessor. In 2018, we were completing six to eight stands a month. In 2019, we were seeing those numbers being completed each week. Now, thanks to the introduction on new machinery like the Striebig Compact and continual investment in our team, we’re on target to complete 25 stands each month. Order numbers are really rocketing and it’s clearer than ever that good quality machinery is invaluable to us. We certainly couldn’t complete these kind of orders each week without our Striebig.”

T: 01786 812 921 www.norbord.co.uk

The new Sherborne branch of Bradfords Building Supplies has designed its interiors to produce a concept store which features SterlingOSB Zero. The Bradfords’ team wanted to create visuals that would showcase 250 years of Bradfords heritage in this flagship development; for this SterlingOSB Zero was the ideal choice. Not only is Norbord’s panelling super trendy, it also boasts inherent strength and is a practical canvas for further signage. Visitors to the merchant can see SterlingOSB Zero across the trade counter, panel walls, corner boxings and signage throughout the store. The complete re-fit was carried out by a local specialist in interior design and fit-out. The initial brief from Bradfords was to create a strippedback store with the fabric of the building on display as much as possible. Donal Ryan, Head of Operational Improvement at Bradfords, suggested using SterlingOSB Zero on the trade counter and the rest of the design developed from there. Donal Ryan explains, “SterlingOSB Zero has a fantastic look and feel. We’ve used one of our best-selling core products

Tooling VOLLMER Introduces New VHybrid Machine Sharpening specialists VOLLMER present the ground breaking new VHybrid 360 Grinding and Erosion machine. This next generation machine combines grinding and eroding technologies and experience that VOLLMER has gained throughout its prestigious history. The exciting new VHybrid 360 Grinding and Erosion machine can be used to machine Solid carbide or PCD cutting tools in a single set-up. The VHybrid 360 not only provides tool manufacturers with high efficiency for reduced machining times, but also maximum precision. A wide range of automatic settings enable unmanned production around the clock. With the new VOLLMER tool manager, users can manage the automatic switching of up to eight grinding or eroding wheels intuitively. For grinding and eroding tools The arrival of the VHybrid 360 Grinding and Erosion machine at EMO 2019 from the Swabian specialist in grinding and erosion machines allows tool manufacturers to grind and erode carbide and PCD tools like drills, milling cutters or reamers in one combined set-up. The VHybrid 360 is based on multi-layer machining, which is implemented through two vertically arranged spindles. Here, VOLLMER is using the tried-and-tested technology of its VGrind grinding machine series. With the VHybrid 360, the bottom spindle can be used for both grinding and eroding, while the top spindle is reserved exclusively for grinding. Combining the best of two worlds With the VHybrid 360, VOLLMER has not only combined the best of both worlds for grinding and eroding, but it has also further developed proven technologies. From the world of erosion, VOLLMER has incorporated knowledge gained through more than three decades of working with wire erosion and wheel erosion machines from different model series. The key component is the VPulse EDM erosion generator, which sets new standards when it comes to efficiency and surface quality. From the world of grinding, the ultra-modern machine concept of the VGrind series ensures high precision machining with both spindles of the VHybrid 360 vertically arranged in the pivot point of the C-axis. This guarantees high profile accuracy and enables exact grinding and eroding processes. In addition, tool machining times can be reduced thanks to the shorter linear-axis travel distances that are credit to the unique spindle arrangement.

Making tool production more flexible The VHybrid 360 can be used to produce different cutting tool types that are used for machining processes in the wood, metal or composite material sectors. The VOLLMER machine gives tool manufacturers the flexibility to perform fully-fledged grinding and eroding processes on standard and special tools – regardless of whether the blanks are made of carbide, sintered PCD or brazed diamond tips. The machine can be used for tools with diameters of up to 50mm and lengths of up to 360mm. Depending on the configuration of the grinding wheels or rotary electrodes, larger diameters are also possible. An optionally available steady rest ensures stability for long tools and a new five-axis control guarantees precise execution of the grinding and eroding processes. Simplifying operation and unmanned operation A range of automation solutions enable unmanned machining around the clock. For example, the HC4 chain magazine can hold up to 39 HSK 63A tool holders. In addition, up to eight grinding and eroding wheels including coolant supply can be exchanged fully automatically – in a process managed in the VHybrid 360. This is available for the first time credit to the newly developed VOLLMER tool manager. With this, machine operators can select the grinding and electrode sets intuitively and easily using a drag and drop option. The combined grinding and erosion machine is based on the established VOLLMER control panel concept with a height-adjustable and pivoting touchscreen. The grinding and eroding processes are programmed, simulated and monitored via the ExLevel PRO 3D software. The axes can be selected and moved with the VOLLMER multifunction handwheel. In addition, the machine has a dressing device for rotary electrodes and an integrated wheel probe for ultra-precise calibration of the grinding and eroding wheel packages in the process. “Tool manufacturers today are often development partners for their customers and are involved in the tool planning phase from the outset in order to achieve efficient machining of a wide range of materials,” says Dr Stefan Brand, CEO of the VOLLMER Group. “And whether carbide or diamond tools are required, the hybrid machining technologies in our VHybrid 360 enable precise machining of a variety of rotary tools, such as drills, milling cutters or reamers.” e: admin-uk@vollmer-group.com www.vollmer-group.com

Handling Massive Time Savings And Improved Efficiency With Combilift At RH Wilson RH Wilson (Lakes) Ltd, situated as the name suggests in the Lake District, is an independent privately owned timber importing company, run by joint owners Ann and Rodney Dalton. When they took over the business in 2013, one of Rodney’s priorities was to improve the efficiency of storage, handling and stock location procedures. Thanks to a combination of Combilift multidirectional forklifts and racking in the 40,000ft² warehousing areas, some startling results have been achieved. The company specialises in grading timber for specific end use, whether it be redwood and hardwood for joineries making doors and windows, or whitewood for pallet and packaging manufacturers. It delivers its wide range of products “from Guernsey to Glasgow” from its base in Kirkby Stephen and also offers bespoke sawing, x-cutting, grading, planing and moulding facilities. Packs of products were previously block stacked and moved around with 2-directional sideloaders or counterbalance trucks. “We did a detailed study of how long it was taking us to retrieve a specific pack and were alarmed at the figures,” said Rodney. “We were spending a substantial amount of time a day moving packs around and needed at least two employees to do this so it really added up in terms of hours and manpower. My first thought was out with free stacking, in with as much racking as possible and then find a manoeuvrable forklift capable of working in tight spaces.” Following advice from Steve Tomlinson of Combilift and racking specialists, the new system was installed in October 2018. “The time saving has been enormous,” said Rodney. “We are down to five minutes per pack - or four minutes 23 seconds to be precise! - which makes a huge difference when dealing with the four to seven artics a day that we typically load or unload. Quick stock location enables us to adhere to just in time delivery schedules. A knock-on bonus is that we

now only need 30 minutes for the monthly stocktake compared to around two and a half hours previously.” The new racking enabled three extra working aisles to be created, with widths of 2,370mm - down from over 3,000mm needed with the old system - and going to a height of 5.5m also created more vertical storage. 300 packs of timber with lengths ranging from just over 2m to almost 6m can now be accommodated. The 4t capacity of newest of the two Combilifts on site, a C4000 diesel powered model, copes easily when the heaviest 3.5t loads need to be lifted to the top bays. It is fitted with guide rollers for guided aisle operation, making it quick and easy for drivers to access and travel down the aisles. This system also enhances safety procedures as well as reducing the risk of product damage. Rodney was familiar with the Combilift brand as he had a C3000 model at a previous business and was impressed with its reliability as well as the engineering, quality and the general ethos of the Irish manufacturer: “I like the relative simplicity of Combilift’s products - more high tech can just mean more problems in my experience - and our local service engineer finds the truck straightforward to maintain. The racking and the Combilift were not the cheapest options on the market, but as I have found out over many years it can cost money trying to save it, so we are extremely happy with the way this has worked out. So much so that we are looking at another Combilift when we embark on the next phase of our planned expansion.”

Profile The Joinery Network Launches Test Licences For Fully Certified Timber Windows And Doors Joiners can benefit from a fully certified system of timber windows and doors thanks to testing done by The Joinery Network.

Group Ltd, Fiscale, Leitz Tooling UK, and OT Dare Joinery Consultants, offer expertise through every step of the supply chain and are on hand to offer advice.

The co-operative, which has been set up to help joinery companies manufacture superior, fully certified windows and door, has successfully tested a range of timber products against a selection of tests to meet regulations.

“We’re really pleased that every product passed each test and we’re glad to play a part in supporting the timber industry and back UK manufacturers providing superior, high quality timber window and doors,” adds Owen. Joiners can get licences for their timber windows and doors by emailing.

Vertical sliding box sash windows, vertical sliding spiral balance, top & side swing flush casement and storm-proof windows, entrance doors, (including low thresholds), French doors, Single doors, (including in & out opening), and bifold doors have all passed tests for PAS 24:2016 and Document Q for security, BS 6375: 1 and Document L1B for weathertightness and energy efficiency, and Document M for accessibility. O T Dare Joinery Consultant, Owen Dare, and one of the founder directors at The Joinery Network, says: “We’ve tested a comprehensive range of timber products against all of the necessary tests for Building Regulations compliance so that joiners can offer a suited range of certified windows and doors. “Joiners can choose what they need, getting licences for each product, against each test result and cascading the data to use as their own. This means that that both big and small joiners, offering a full or selective range, can comply with regulations and won’t have to worry about falling foul of the law. “They also don’t have the hassle of spending upwards of £80,000 into testing themselves as The Joinery Network has already made that investment. It’s an easy way for joiners to show that their products comply with Building Regulations and win more sales.” The Joinery Network was created to support joiners looking to grow their business by getting into the new build market. Awards Combilift Nominated In Two 2020 IFOY Award Categories For the second year in a row Combilift is a finalist in the IFOY Awards – one of the most prestigious and hotly contested international awards in the materials handling industry. The company is the only manufacturer to have two of its products nominated for a 2020 IFOY Award (International Intralogistics and Forklift Truck of the Year) which honours the best products and solutions of the year. The Combi-CBE4 is a finalist in the Special Vehicle Category. This 4000kg capacity electric powered, all-wheel drive forklift incorporates compact counterbalance design with multidirectional capability for the versatile handling of mixed sized loads. It features the company’s internationally patented independent electric traction (EP.2956350) which provides all front and rear drive wheels with 100% traction control, therefore negating the need for differential lock on slippery surfaces. By inputting the wheel-base parameters, the traction commands are calculated by the control system. As the truck drives and steers, the speed and rotational direction of the wheels are controlled independently, allowing the truck to negotiate tight turns with no tyre wear. The Combi-CS has been nominated in the Warehouse Truck Lowlifter Category. It is the only pedestrian counterbalance stacker that will operate in a conventional reach truck aisle

for space saving and productive storage and handling. It features Combilift’s unique, internationally patented and award winning multi-position tiller arm which can be turned to the left or right of the unit to position the rear drive wheel, allowing the operator to remain at the side of the machine rather than at the rear as is the case with other pedestrian stackers. This ensures optimum visibility of the load and surroundings as well as guaranteeing maximum safety in areas where other personnel or members of the public may be present. The competition will enter its next round when finalists undergo the IFOY audit and innovation check by industry experts in mid-February in Hanover, Germany. 27 journalists from leading logistics media from 19 countries will also personally test and evaluate the nominated equipment for qualities such as technology, design, ergonomics, safety, marketability, customer benefit and sustainability. “Following the nomination of the Combi-PPT powered pallet truck last year, we are delighted that the IFOY committee has recognised two of our innovative products as being worthy of finalist status in 2020,” said Combilift CEO and Cofounder Martin McVicar.

Woodwaste “This is by far the best investment we’ve made in our business to-date!” A manufacturing company in Staffordshire has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs. Stoke Fire Doors Ltd offers a complete range of fire door services, including manufacture, supply and fit BM TRADA accredited internal fire doors, fire exit doors, fire rated doors, timber fire doorsets and glazed fire doors. The company operates from a 10,000 sq ft unit in Tunstall, Stoke-onTrent, although with its mezzanine floor and roof height the volume of space is probably more like 18,000 sq ft. The existing mains gas heating was proving expensive to run, costing between £6000-£7000 per year, and the company was hiring skips each week to take away manufacturing waste, so the management team decided to invest in a new wood waste heater. Director of Stoke Fire Doors, Mark Daniels looked on the internet for recommendations and discovered Wood Waste Technology, based in Stafford just down the road from them, came highly recommended for its British-made wood waste heaters. Mark was impressed with the range of heaters manufactured by Wood Waste Technology and especially liked the ability to add a summer heat dump, to allow waste wood to continue to be burnt throughout the hotter months, by sending the heat direct to atmosphere. After a quote and site survey, Stoke Fire Doors ordered a WT15 heater, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s

experienced engineers into a dedicated unit outside with the heat piped into the main building. Mark says: “This is by far the best investment we’ve made in our business to-date! The team at Wood Waste Technology is extremely knowledgeable, providing us with much needed guidance and advice. Our unit is placed near a residential estate, but because Wood Waste Technology is a Carbon Trust Accredited Supplier, they checked out that there would be no problem having one fitted. We’ve definitely made the right decision for our business buying the WT15. It’s great that we can burn all our waste The WT15 heater installed at Stoke wood and other suitable Fire Doors Ltd rubbish, so need to send less waste to landfill. Our waste disposal bills have reduced tremendously, saving us around £5500 a year, plus we no longer have any heating costs. Would highly recommend that any wood-related manufacturing businesses investigate the benefits of investing in a wood waste heater.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re delighted to have helped Stoke Fire Doors save money on heating and waste disposal. We’re happy to have a no-obligation chat with any business who is looking into biomass solutions, to help people understand whether it’s the right investment to make.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs.
