Ligna

It Can Be Safer On Foot Known for its innovative approach to materials handling, Combilift first introduced pedestrian operated models to its range a few years ago, in line with a growing preference of many companies to use these whenever possible for safety reasons. These now include the Combi-WR reach truck and its multidirectional counterpart the CombiWR4, the Combi-CS counterbalance stacker, and most recently the Combi-PPT powered pallet truck. Working at slower speeds than ride-on models enables a heightened awareness of operators compared to when they are in a cab of a motorised truck. This enhances health and safety procedures in areas where pedestrians may be present – in busy production plants for example. A key feature of all these models is the internationally patented multi-position tiller arm, which can be turned to the left or right of the unit, allowing the operator to remain at the side of the machine rather than at the rear as is the case with other pedestrian brands. This eliminates the risk of operators being trapped between the back of the machine and racking. It also allows for full visibility of the load, the forks and the surroundings. www.combilift.com

Ligna

SCM At Ligna 2019 With Its “Smart&Human Factory” At the Hannover event, a cutting-edge production model with highly flexible and modular automation and man-robot interaction systems SCM, the world leader in the field of secondary woodworking technologies, is gearing up for the next edition of Ligna (Hannover, 27-31 May 2019), having achieved a double-digit growth rate in the last two years which propelled the group over the 700 million turnover target at the end of 2018, with a technological range of products increasingly in line with Industry 4.0 requirements. After launching its “Lean Cell 4.0” for highly automated industrial production two years ago, from this same Hannover event, SCM now goes further with its breakthrough concept of Smart Manufacturing. From its over 4,000 square metres’ booth in Hall 13, the Italian woodworking giant will present its “Smart&Human Factory”: a cutting-edge production model based on digital and automation systems and allowing for advanced man-machine interaction and 360-degree control over the entire production flow. A model based on highly innovative, flexible, modular and easily reconfigurable systems, designed

10

Panel & Joinery Production - May / June 2019

to respond in an increasingly effective and fast way to the challenges of mass customisation. A new “smart and human” factory - also making progress in terms of work flow: thanks to the integration of robotics, low-added value and repetitive human tasks are now minimised. “Ligna 2019 will be one of the key international events for SCM - traditionally a historic and reliable partner for the entire woodworking industry”, explains the SCM Division Director, Luigi De Vito. We will showcase top-level technological innovation, designed to support more and more companies in their business and help them meet new Industry 4.0 requirements. The current, new production trends, which will be the focus of the next edition of Ligna, are expected to widen the gap between more and less intensively automated companies. By offering a new model of interaction between machines and industrial and collaborative robotics, ground-level logistic handling and software, SCM will have as its mission to help partner companies work toward achievable, successful and smart goals.” “You Will Never Work Alone” The claim “You will never work alone” effectively

Ligna summarises the goal of the new SCM product range: to supply a “user-friendly” wood panel processing automation system, with the option to reconfigure the production process whenever this is necessary, to quickly process increasingly smaller “order to production” batches. After previewing a working application of its “Smart&Human Factory” at the Open House 2019 event on 31 January 31 through to 2 February, which drew crowds to the company’s Technology Center of Rimini (Italy), SCM will showcase an even richer version at the next Ligna. An automated system for all the phases of furniture production will be presented: from furniture designing to the generation of machine programs and from panel processing to cabinet assembling. The process aims at optimising as much as possible panel cutting, edgebanding and drilling operations, so as to reduce waste, rejects and retooling requirements during product changeovers, to then reassemble orders back together at the end of the process and delaying customisation until this stage. With this system, low-added value and repetitive human tasks are minimised, thanks to the use of KUKA industrial anthropomorphic robots, assisted by collaborative Universal Robots in the final process stages (assembly, hardware insertion, glue dispensing and surface finishing) and ensuring totally safe conditions without the use of enclosures. Finally, process logistics are made flexible thanks to the use of MiR intelligent autonomous self-driving shuttles. The entire process will be managed and supervised by the Maestro Watch supervision software - monitoring the state of each of the products being machined throughout the process, and by the IoT Maestro Connect system - which collects and analyses SCM technology data, ensuring on the one hand full control over the production flow and, on the other, the implementation of smart predictive maintenance models.

new technologies applied to the wide range of SCM machining options (cutting, edgebanding, boring, milling, nesting-milling and edge machining) for both panels and solid wood. In addition, the system features are enhanced thanks to the introduction of a new sensor kit able to detect the changes in crucial machine components. This evolved data collection and analysis system originating from SCM machinery, combined with Maestro Smartech augmented reality visual technology, aims to offer the client excellent product flow control, achieve rapid, intelligent maintenance and effective planning of a spare parts strategy. The new “upgrades” for Maestro Suite software will be featured. Maestro Active (special mention at the last German Design Award) is the new HMI application which, combined with the touch eye-M control panel, has revolutionised the human-machine interface. The project will be launched at Ligna on machining centres, panel boring devices, panel saws and edge banders offering all these technologies a single environment for use and a common graphic interface, making the operator’s work notably easier, and providing a single structure of areas and functions. The new “upgrades” for Maestro Suite software will also be showcased. In addition to the latest version of the supervision software for our Maestro Watch integrated cell systems, the Maestro CNC 2019 version will be released with major updates for CNC machining centres and drilling machines. User-friendly, intuitive software, which, most importantly, can be integrated and interfaced with other systems used by customers. Solid wood sees the arrival of hypsos, the anticipated 5 axes machining centre with integrated cabin, designed for interior decorators and the three-dimensional processing of elements with a complex shape or large dimensions.

News From The “Digital” Frontier At Ligna 2019, SCM will add to its digital range, by combining digital technologies with high added value, specifically targeted services. The Digital Hub, the innovation control centre at the core of the exhibition booth, will display all the latest products. To meet the needs of 4.0 industrial production, the “Maestro Connect “ IoT platform will be extended to Panel & Joinery Production - May / June 2019

Ligna The best of gabbiani technology will take centre stage for sizing, with new devices aimed at processing delicate panels, in line with SCM’s keen focus on surface treatment. The gabbiani sizing machines on display at the trade fair will include the exclusive Flexstore HP warehouse management system, characterised by the Saw-Set device to make tool settings even faster and more exact.

The accord 42 fx machining centre with dual operator unit combined with 3 and 5 axes, ideal for the production of windows, doors and stairs, is also being demonstrated.

As far as edgebanding is concerned, there is great anticipation surrounding stefanicell, the new generation of cells for “batch-1” processing, with high-tech solutions, even with minimal investment, and the new pickback bridge system for the automatic return of panels, that guarantees simple, “just in time” production management.

Timber construction will see the world preview of Oikos X, the new machining centre, specifically designed to machine structural elements, X-lam/CLT wall panels, fitted with the new 6-axis machining head unit that allows any machining work to be carried out on every side of the element from a single position and in reduced spaces.

The Stefani range will present a new generation rounding unit with servo-assisted technology, designed to work even the most delicate panels with surprising continuity and quality. For the olimpic range, the new glue tank is worth pointing out, with technological solutions for a perfect line of glue and a new glue scraper to process panels coming from the nesting cycle.

New entries also for double ended squaring and shaping machines: at the trade fair you will get a chance to see the celaschi p40 in operation, fitted with “electronic spindle, an innovative solution which will soon be standard fitted on the whole range. Its aim is to continuously improve operating reliability and efficiency especially in more challenging tasks like the processing of particularly abrasive materials and the production of large sized pieces.

The solution put forward for assembly is the semiautomatic action clamp, aimed at assembled furniture manufacturers and a valid aid in assembling each part of the furniture with precision and quality. For the first time ever, the clamp will be presented with semiautomatic loading and unloading ergonomic systems, served by an input translation shuttle and 90° output flipper to make the subsequent stages of the work easier.

Other important “new entries” in panel technologies, starting with the new range of CNC Morbidelli x200 and x400 machining centres, that applies the best 5 axes “All-in-one” technology performance to nesting processing, in line with market demands increasingly focused on “batch-1” production and which, therefore, need to combine high speed and maximum flexibility in panel cutting outlines.

There are numerous “new entries” for carpentry machines too, the key ones being dictated by automation. To mention but a few, px 350i is the new circular saw with mobile cart and tilting blade up to 46°, that can house blades up to 350 mm (up to 300 mm using the engraver function). This ensures maximum safety while working, with reduced bulk and guarantees a perfect hold on the panel thanks to the exclusive presser. The “Ready” control positioned on the wall unit, guarantees motorised and programmed movement of the blade tilt and powered and programmable rear stop, guaranteeing a rapid, exact positioning and reducing operator movement.

On show for the first time at Ligna 2019 is also the new morbidelli cx 220 drilling centre a focal point in the compact categories. Providing even better performance in terms of finishing quality, precision and productivity, and morbidelli ux 200d, fitted with the exclusive dual variable-axis broaches and the new Clamex operating units for joints.

Ligna HOMAG reveals the future for woodworking production at LIGNA 2019 This May (27 -31st), at the LIGNA 2019 trade fair, HOMAG will once again lead the field with ground breaking machinery, software and technical innovations for wood processing. Throughout the 5000 m2 floor space in Halls 14 and 13 (Weinmann timber frame house construction), there will be a vast range of products on demonstration for small woodworking shops and large industrial companies alike. At the heart of the HOMAG stand is the Innovation Centre, where this year, visitors can take a journey through time in the furniture manufacturing industry. The exhibit includes outstanding milestones and technical innovations from the history of the wood processing industry. Towards the end of the exhibit, the focus turns to the future: What will the furniture of the future (‘Smart Furniture’) look like? What challenges will we face? How can HOMAG help its customers meet these challenges? A glimpse into the future In addition to unusual ideas, HOMAG will present real-world examples – futuristic ideas bought into reality. A significant influence on this exhibit has been the collaborative research project between the renowned Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences and HOMAG. The research was based on Digitalisation: How will the production processes of woodworking shops look in the future? The study examined how woodworking shops can find the optimal solution to take their production to the next level. Known as the proto_lab project (production tomorrow laboratory), it has helped to develop ideas including concepts for individual machine modules, hardware and apps that can communicate with each other. One of the key focus points was the ‘production cell of the future.’ HOMAG has taken the best ideas to date, developed them further, and is now turning those ideas into reality as marketable products. As a form of field testing, many of the prototypes are already being used in live production situations by customers, with feedback flowing directly back into HOMAG’s product development.

HOMAG MOULDTEQ M-300 for planing and moulding HOMAG – edging ahead This year’s show will see major advancements in edge banding from HOMAG. There will be several machine premieres from the new entry-level EDGETEQ S-240 up to the EDGETEQ S-500 and S-800 profiLine models. All the machines are equipped with the new powerTouch control system and are ‘tapio-ready’. The EDGETEQ S-240 model 1240 is a completely new machine. It offers a high level of automation resulting in significant simplification and time saving during setup. The model uses the QA65N overhead glue application system with easy cleaning and emptying. The special coating of the system means that all types of glue can be processed, including PUR. There’ll be two EDGETEQ S-500 machines on show with different units and feed speeds. The 20 m/min model features a new AG12 Basic gluing unit to process PUR glue. Whilst in the post-processing area, special units (available for the first time in this series) are used: the MS40 multi-level routing unit, the MF60 Servotrim multi-function profile routing unit and the MZ40 multi-level scraper unit.

The second EDGETEQ S-500 will feature a feed speed of 25 m/min and offer three edge banding procedures – EVA, PUR and airTec. This means that inexpensive EVA can be used on numerous body components, while PUR can be used where there is a requirement for temperature or moisture resistant properties. Finally, when the look is particularly important – for example, on cabinet fronts – the airTec zero joint technology is available. The new, one-sided EDGETEQ S-800 profiLine series is a powerful machine, ideal for special order based production. It works

Ligna

SAWTEQ B-300 fed by STORETEQ system

independently of the width and is therefore very flexible. For the highest quality edging, a laserTec unit has been installed to deliver zero joints. With a feed speed of up to 35 m/min, the new workpiece supply system enables high capacities to be achieved. Parallel precise cutting is not necessary as this is done by the dimensioning unit. High productivity is also ensured by the ‘gap setup’ control function. This calculates the gap required for the changeover and blocks the machine infeed for the required length of time, eliminating extended periods of downtime. To offer greater investment security, the machine has been ‘future proofed’ with a new drilling grid which makes it easier and more flexible to retrofit the machines with units. Less installation space is also required because the outfeed switch cabinet is now integrated in the machine. In addition to these models, LIGNA will see premieres for the EDGETEQ S-200 model 1130 FC and the S-300 model 1440 E. Alongside these will be an improved EDGETEQ S-380 profiLine model with a LOOPTEQ return system.

The new robot saws provide highly efficient batch size 1 production achieving up to 800 parts per shift with extremely low error rates and low costs per part. Operated in either the unmanned mode or manually for cutting books or thin panels, for example, these new saws can also utilise HOMAG’s intelliDivide system which provides cutting pattern optimisation on demand via software-as-a-service (SaaS). With zero investment cost, intelliDivide can be used anywhere, anytime via the tapio cloud – on a desktop or any mobile device with internet access including iOS, Android, Windows or Mac OS. Optimisation starts automatically after data has been uploaded. The software always calculates a choice of multiple alternatives and, with the results requiring no adjustments, they are immediately ready for the machine.

Panel sizing – a new generation of robot saws The HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300 flexTec and B-400 flexTec beam saws represent an entirely new generation of robot saws. This is because, in addition to automated robot operation, manual use of the saws is still possible, making them extremely versatile. These new models, based on proven technology, can be used in combination with other machines to create automated production cells. In the manual operation mode, the saws can also cut books of panels, further increasing their flexibility. Automated batch size 1 cutting processes Thanks to the robot, the new cutting cell can operate unmanned over longer periods, freeing up skilled operators for other tasks. The saws can be fed by a variety of tables including a specially designed side table, a number of lifting tables, an HBX 150 single axis portal or a high-performance connection to a horizontal storage system.

Explore HOMAG’S digital products Precision and efficiency in cutting processes do not have to cost a fortune. The SAWTEQ B-130, HOMAG’s smallest panel dividing saw, clearly demonstrates this. Along with the SAWTEQ B-200 featuring a lifting table, it will be on show at LIGNA.

Panel & Joinery Production - May / June 2019

The HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300 and B-400 flex-Tec beam saws – new generation of robot saws

The new HOMAG saws are ‘tapio-ready’ so users no longer need to enter any machine parameters. They can apply the optimisation results with one simple mouse click. The latest in CNC technology There’s a wave of innovative CNC solutions being shown at LIGNA for the first time including the new CENTATEQ P-210 series. These gantry-style models feature a double-sided drive, a separate drilling gear arrangement and milling spindle with two independent Z-axes, a dynamic field division for the parallel mode and a 2-circle vacuum system with double-lip technology for step-less adjustment of the clamping devices. There’s a choice between 3, 4 and 5-axis heads, and the P-210 can be equipped with up to 24 tool changing stations and a maximum of 21 vertical and 10 horizontal drilling spindles with patented spindle clamping. HOMAG product manager, Friedhelm Rempp concludes: “We were looking for a good balance between space, performance, handling and flexibility for the new CENTATEQ P-210. And we are of the opinion that we have absolutely found them. “ PowerEdge Pro Duo – perfect edge quality for CNC edge gluing HOMAG engineers have been working on a completely new unit for edge banding on CNC machines. The result is the powerEdge Pro Duo which offers defined and controllable parameters at each point along the contour. Quality-defining parameters such as pressure, temperature and speed can be easily traded via an intelligent controller. The result: perfect edge quality every time. CENTATEQ T-300 Series – Double table CNC Essentially, the new CENTATEQ T-300 (with 3, 4 or 5-axis technology) consists of two CNC machines featuring a grid table with one control. It has a footprint of just 64 m2 and features two moveable tables, two milling spindles, two fully equipped drilling gears and is combined with the latest safety and operating technology.

16

Panel & Joinery Production - May / June 2019

Overall, the user has a working area of 1550 x 6400 mm available. Both tables can be used individually with a dimension of 1550 x 3150 mm each. In parallel operation, for example, fronts can be processed on the left table and carcass parts on the right. More CNC developments HOMAG will also be demonstrating the CENTATEQ N-600 nesting machine with the Cabineo drilling unit and a new Cabineo feeding system; the DRILLTEQ V Series linked to a robot for an automated entry level CNC, alongside the DRILLTEQ D-500 which can now also be used for milling as well as horizontal drilling and dowelling. Surface finishing solutions from HOMAG Continuing its drive for high performance finishing solutions, HOMAG will be demonstrating a broad range of machines. The collection includes models for surface and profile spray coating, sanding machines in different performance classes, solid wood profiling and the latest developments in the field of lamination. HOMAG has offered wet-coating technologies for the surface coating of furniture for some time. The current product range, however, stemmed from HOMAG’s partnership with the world-famous painting system specialist, Makor. At LIGNA, HOMAG will present a broader range including spray coating solutions from trade to industrial applications. There will be solutions for spray coating flat workpieces, strips, and window and profile parts. Models with an oscillating spray arm for simple workpiece contours or spraying robots for complex 3D part geometries will also be demonstrated. In short, everything you need will be on display, whether it’s an individual machine or a complete system with all the handling components and a drying system. Planing and moulding of solid wood parts In 2017, HOMAG entered the moulder market with its first range of planing machines. Customers can choose from machines designed

Ligna

The EDGETEQ S-800 powerline will premier at LIGNA for the four-sided planing of window scantlings, floorboards or the profiling of non-standard furniture components and the like. The MOULDTEQ M-300 planing machine offers a solution that combines the latest technology with a solid cast iron machine construction, delivering a high level of precision. Its variable feed and adjustable spindle speeds make it very flexible. It also has smooth power transmission, as each spindle is driven by its own motor. In terms of operation, that couldn’t be easier as it utilises the intuitive HOMAG powerTouch user interface. Sanding and laminating for quality finishes For decades, HOMAG has been revered for its powerful wide-belt sanding machines. At LIGNA, visitors will be able to see a complete range of SANDTEQ sanding machines in action, along with the new graphical user guidance arrangement, the powerTouch control system. Completing the surface finishing story is the LAMTEQ F-200 with a new handling concept. This innovative handling concept requires fewer personnel for operation and it also removes the need for physically demanding lifting, carrying and flipping of unwieldy panels. This partly-automated handling solution consists of a vacuumsuction traverse at the infeed, an automatic panel turner behind the system and a stack return feed system. All this makes it possible for one person to handle all the workpiece transport. If another colleague applies the coating materials, the laminating plant can be safely and easily operated by just two people.

The optimised parts flow increases the plant’s productivity delivering a quick return on investment. Invest time for the future Simon Brooks, managing director at HOMAG UK concludes: “The hallmark of the HOMAG stand at LIGNA has always been innovation, and at this year’s show it will be taken to a completely new level.

“The research project with the Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences has provided a springboard for new ideas and concepts which are taking shape in real-life scenarios. There will be many more exciting developments emerging in the near future, advancements that will benefit small workshops, midsized and industrial manufacturers alike. “If you want to remain competitive in your business, I would highly recommend that you invest time to visit LIGNA 2019. The show will provide an ideal opportunity to evaluate the digital transformation that is sure to drive our industry for the foreseeable future. “ T: 01332 856424 E: info-uk@homag.com www.homag.com

Edgings

Edgings Matching The New Pfleiderer Decors Pfleiderer, one of Europe’s leading wood-based material manufacturers, has extended its range and presented the latest additions at the German trade exhibition “Bau”. In 2019, there are around 34 new decors, which extend the company’s portfolio offered worldwide. As a longestablished partner of Pfleiderer, Ostermann supplies the matching edgings. Among the new decors, you will find cutting-edge reproductions of trend materials, such as concrete, metal, stone and marble. With understatement and nonchalance, they reflect the still fashionable industrial look: ground concrete and smoothed surfaces paired with metals, such as black steel or even glass and rotary cut veneer. Decor innovations such as the silhouetted glass decor “Window”, steel decors or the expressive “Terrazzo Nero” as well as diverse concrete variants represent casual industrial charm. When it comes to wood decors, the trend is for light, natural wood species with balanced, more muted grain and figure. Edging expertise from Ostermann As a long-time partner of Pfleiderer, edgings specialist Ostermann was informed beforehand of the new colour and decor developments. The experts from the product management “edging” got to work with the goal of quickly finding the matching edgings to the 34 new surfaces in order to be able to provide them as soon as possible. And the work has paid off. The new edgings are available in the standard widths 23, 33, 43 and 100 mm, and upon request in any width up to 100 mm. International colour standard The Pfleiderer Design Collection is available across the world in the same colours and decors. Just like the new extension of the range, the matching edgings are globally available, and can be ordered in the multilingual Ostermann online shop that is translated in 10 languages: with perfect colour matching between edgings and boards.

Decorative Surfaces Traditional Kitchens Charming and Elegant A traditional kitchen is one of the most popular and versatile style concepts that includes several design elements, including warm colours and symmetrical lines and which allows homeowners to feel comfortable and elegant at the same time. A modern contemporary interpretation of traditional combines new fresh woodgrain designs with plain colours in matt or supermatt textured surfaces. Keep an installation current by connecting up to date decors with the latest trend toned solid colour doors or within the surrounding room by the use of accessories and soft furnishings. Oak remains a firm favourite in this genre. RENOLIT ALKOREN Kendal Oak is a smooth oak with subtle details and an even uniformity of colour. A gentle linear structure flows around attractively proportioned swirling knots. The surface has a light distribution of linear pores giving it a natural look with a velvety, pleasant touch.

An alternative contender, and a break from the norm, is the up and coming Rockford Hickory. One the latest new décor’s on offer in RENOLIT’s stock range, it is a robust and versatile. This sophisticated design is created by light pores and contrasting cathedrals. Variation of pattern and colour emphasizes it’s inherent beauty. Complement with the subtle tone of Stone Grey Supermatt and a fresh forest green to create a traditional effect with modern appeal. A more recent development of a traditional kitchen is the appearance of painted look woodgrain textured single colour doors that give a modern twist to conventional kitchen design. Painted timber look, such as RENOLIT’s 3D thermoformable Modern Ash, is particularly suited to present-day new build homes where the owner desires the quality and design statement associated with a traditional kitchen but in a smaller space where a full woodgrain décor may be domineering. Modern Ash is a deep, visual ash structured surface emboss which creates an up-to-date contemporary painted timber finish. A style which fits well with a variety of 5-piece or routered door styles. The Modern Ash emboss matches Egger’s ST27 and RENOLIT offers a wide spectrum of 7 colours. Illustrated here are two different colour ways; dark and light to illustrate how trending accessorising or a change of wall paint will have a dramatic effect on the overall feel of a kitchen. The dramatic dark colour of Onyx Grey provides a statement to any room. Needing little to lift the effect further it can be easily combined with a variety of colours to meet the individual’s preferences. Shown here combined with Tin Plate, OakENDgrain Delight or Fern to create a pleasant interior.

At the other end of the spectrum, the soft light tone of White Grey Modern Ash provides an ideal backdrop which can be enriched with bolder woodgrain designs such as Inedito 1 SC, or by adding warm metallic Rose Gold to provide a bright and cheerful atmosphere.

Decorative Surfaces Benif Interior Film On The Menu At Carluccio’s The well-known Italian restaurant chain Carluccio’s, founded by the late, charismatic chef Antonio Carluccio in 1999 has over 70 restaurants in the UK. As part of the company’s environmental policy to refurbish equipment rather than replace it where possible, Benifi Interior Film from David Clouting was seen as the perfect solution to refurbish the surfaces of a number of under counter fittings such as chill cabinets and storage units whose surfaces had, over time, become scratched and worn but the equipment was still perfectly functional. Benif Interior Film, manufactured by LG Hausys, is a self-adhesive, architectural film that can be quickly and easily applied to most interior surfaces. For this project specialist contractors Distinct

Decorators used a Benif solid graphite Interior Film to cover the surfaces, the results which were achieved without any major operational disruption to the business, were both visually pleasing and practical thanks to the Benif’s low maintenance requirements and longevity of performance. With over 400 Benif designs and finishes to choose from, walls, doors, paneling, skirting and architrave can be quickly refurbished without the need for costly replacements. Benif Interior Film is CE and IMO Certified so can be specified with confidence for a wide range of applications. www.davidclouting.co.uk

Decorative Surfaces Surface Appeal James Latham has just announced the addition of three new collections to its popular high-end range of decorative panels, Xylocleaf. Combining outstanding Italian design with classleading standards in melamine processing, for Xylocleaf, the feel of a surface is just as important as the contemporary, on-trend look. The inspirational new collections include; Mosaico, which offers a weaved leather surface, Duna, comprising a registered, embossed stone surface and Alpaca, featuring a soft cotton texture. In addition, three new products have also been added to the Fusion collection. Fusion is totally unique in that it has linen textile bonded to its surface, with a thin layer of protecting resin, thus combining a natural surface – the fabric, with the industrial process of creating a decorative panel. Fusion surfaces were developed in Italy by XyloCleaf and it is the only manufacturer worldwide that can create them. Xylocleaf is already extremely popular for premium commercial, retail and leisure specifications as it is strong, durable and highly scratch and chemical resistant, so as well as looking great, it is particularly well suited for high traffic areas. These features also make Xylocleaf a popular choice for residential applications as it can be used to manufacture all kinds of interior furniture from worktops and cupboard doors in kitchens and

bathrooms to tables, desks, shelving, wall panelling and even internal doors. Paul Morson, James Latham’s Group Product Champion for Melamine commented, “These latest additions offer even greater choice to architects, interior designers and furniture makers who are looking to add dimension, depth and texture to their projects. “Xylocleaf has become a real success story for us and is now one of our most popular decors, particularly with our customers in the residential and leisure sectors.” Because Xylocleaf surfaces are made in the form of panels, laminate sheets and matching ABS edge banding, textures, finishes and colours can be blended, allowing different parts of a commercial or residential design scheme to feature matching or contrasting items, creating a fluid and contemporary finish throughout. Fittings Think Differently About Blum When manufacturers specify Blum products, they are signing up for more than hinges and drawer boxes. The Blum philosophy means that all touch points of their products need to be satisfied, with not only a superior product, but also technical expertise, training, aids in selling and end user satisfaction, enabled with their matchless Lifetime Guarantee on all products. Storage The innovative and popular Space Tower larder unit is the most efficient way of providing maximum storage space in a given area – up to 55% more useable space compared with fixed shelves. Each internal pull-out, be it LEGRABOX Pure, LEGRABOX Free or TANDEMBOX antaro is individually fully extendable so there is no need to leave a void above each drawer for the removal of items, and the contents are wholly visible and accessible on three sides. Drawers can be up to 650mm deep and there are nine widths available, from 300mm to 1200mm. New runner Our Blumotion S runner works with three opening/closing technologies; SERVO-DRIVE, Blum’s electric opening system for pull-outs; Tip-On BLUMOTION which is a mechanical opening system (Tip-On), combined with Blumotion softclose; and simple BLUMOTION – Blum’s tried and tested soft close mechanism. The Blumotion S runner can be used with both LEGRABOX and MOVENTO drawers and ensures that manufacturers can offer different opening/closing technologies without having to change their runner system. Wall units Lift-up motion for wall cabinet doors means the door does not intrude into the room so is an advantage for smaller kitchens and bathrooms. Blum’s AVENTOS lift systems

Fittings New Armor-Coat® Hardware Range Certified Best Forged Steel Product Increased exposure to salty air and higher wind speeds makes choosing quality window and door hardware vital - and the new range from Stonebridge has now been certified as the best forged steel product available.

“We’ve designed this new range to give consumers a stylish choice of hardware that they can be confident will last for a very long time,” says Ian Smith, Design & Brand Manager at DJH Group, owners of the Stonebridge brand.

As an island nation, nowhere in the UK is more than 70 miles away from the sea and it’s estimated that around three million people live on the coast. Rust and atmospheric pitting is a common problem for homeowners who live in coastal areas due to the high concentration of sodium chloride in the air. But these problems aren’t exclusive to the seaside. People living in industrial areas can also experience difficulties due to the corrosive effect of airborne pollutants as a result of certain manufacturing processes.

“To come through a 480-hour salt spray test is a massive achievement. Our nearest competitors failed at well under half that time, so that just shows how difficult it is.”

Stonebridge’s Armor-Coat® range has been successfully tested to BS EN 1670:2007 Grade 5, the highest possible standard. The test required products to be exposed to a neutral salt spray under controlled laboratory conditions for 480 hours and the results showed exceptionally high corrosion resistance.

As well as providing exceptional protection from corrosion, the Armor-Coat® system also incorporates UV protection for fade resistance. The new range of architectural hardware from Stonebridge combines traditional designs with a contemporary twist. Available in black and satin steel, it’s manufactured to the highest possible quality and features exquisite fine detailing. “The new Stonebridge range is as durable as it is stylish,” Ian concludes. “The test certificate proves exactly how robust and hard-wearing it is. Just ask us to see a copy of the certificate.”

Case Study Cookstown Panel Centre Gains Cutting Advantage With HOMAG UK SAWTEQ B-300 with integrated lifting table for Cookstown Panel Centre – efficient, accurate and reliable processing

Based in an 85,000 sq. ft. facility in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, is the £10m turnover business, Cookstown Panel Centre. The company, established in 1983, has always insisted on sourcing the finest materials and machinery to produce its renowned range of kitchen products. “Our customers demand top quality products,” explains managing director, Gerry Mallon. He continues, “That’s why we buy the best materials we can and when it comes to machinery, HOMAG is always our first port of call. “The relationship with HOMAG began over 25 years ago when I first met Derek Reid, the company’s representative here in Ireland. Straightaway, I was impressed with Derek’s approach and knowledge of the woodworking industry. “Over time, we’ve built up a really strong rapport and his in-depth understanding of our business has gone from strength to strength. Derek doesn’t pull any punches, so when we ask his advice we know we can trust him to give us not only his honest opinion, but also a solution that is the very best for our business.” Time to sharpen the saw “In 2018 it became apparent that we would need to upgrade one of our beam saws to enable us to satisfy the increasing demand for our products. We wanted

36

Panel & Joinery Production - May / June 2019

to improve our efficiency and the accuracy of our production whilst at the same time maintaining the reliability and continuity. “Customers lead times are coming down all the time and it would be disastrous for our business if we couldn’t deliver what they want, when they want it. Gone are the days when you could say to the customer, “It will be delivered in three weeks.” That just won’t wash now, people expect product to be ready in a few days at the most, even if they are bespoke items. “Having made the decision to invest in a new beam saw we spoke first with Derek and asked him to come back with a proposal and specification for a beam saw. We explained that we wanted a solution that would not only satisfy our current demands, but would also be able to cope with future growth.” HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300 with integrated lifting table “Although we have a long-standing relationship with HOMAG, we are conscious not to overlook other options that might be available in the market. In this instance, however, the solution Derek came up with, a HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300 with integrated lifting table, made the most sense in every way. “The saw has all the latest technology from HOMAG. It can handle large 4.2 m panels and delivers short production times and high throughput due

Case Study to automatic feeding via the lifting table. For our operation, the lifting table is essential; most of our products are cut from 2.8 m boards which are stacked onto the lifting table by fork lift truck, thus avoiding manual handling.” Efficiency, accuracy & reliability “Historically, we have used the Magi-cut software in our business. It enables us to drive the production process from the offices, rather than the factory floor. The Magi-cut software is easy-to-use and integrates seamlessly with the HOMAG saws. “Using this software enables us to plan efficient cutting processes and we can optimise waste and systematically lower the overall costs for cutting. It gives us full control of costs and is quick and easy to use.”

Feeding the edge banders “With the increased volume of bespoke products of varying shapes and sizes, it is vital that our beam saws can maintain high throughputs. This is not only to maximise the potential of our two latest HOMAG edge banders, but also to enable us to meet the spikes in demand that are part of everyday business pressures in our service orientated world. “Because the new saw is much more user friendly and is packed with the latest technology, it is far more efficient and accurate. It has enabled us to maintain and improve our service to customers. “The SAWTEQ B-300 does what it says on the tin. It’s what you would expect from the world’s largest woodworking company: a reliable, highly accurate and super-efficient saw. We believe it will pay for itself within two years and so we’re more than happy with it,” concludes Gerry Mallon.

Software Felder Recommends CABINET VISION To CNC Novice - Neighbour Construction Says Software Makes Them “A Real Game Player” Until just over a year ago, building and joinery company Neighbour Construction had never used a CNC machine, and didn’t know that combining it with specialist software could help transform the business. When they invested in a Felder Profit H 200 pod and rail machining centre, Felder recommended they program it with CABINET VISION software, as almost all their work is bespoke. Now, Neighbour Construction director Dominik Dubaj says CABINET VISION has eliminated all human error and means they can cut around 16 cabinets for a kitchen, and have them sanded with a primer coat applied, within a day or two. And bedroom wardrobes which would have taken two or three days to make previously, can now be produced in around five hours, to the preassemble stage. “We had zero knowledge and experience of working with CNC machine tools, but saw immediately that the standard proprietary software was not going to be effective in creating programs for the bespoke products we manufacture – the calculations would have simply taken too long. “From the very beginning CABINET VISION removed any issues we had previously with manual work where panels sometimes weren’t square and had

to be redone. We’d only find those problems when something wouldn’t assemble properly on site. But CABINET VISION ensures every panel is 100 per cent accurate, and means that our installations now take just one or two days instead of a week.” They have recently replaced a panel saw with a Felder CF 741 S combination saw, and even though CABINET VISION doesn’t program it as it’s a manual machine, the software does play a large role with it. “CABINET VISION has been specially configured for us to generate a cutlist for pre-cutting the panels on it,” says Dominik Dubaj. The company worked with the same type of bespoke User Created Standard (UCS) for their previous panel saw, too. “We use the CABINET VISION cutlists to precut the panels on the combination saw, oversized by 6mm.

38

Panel & Joinery Production - May / June 2019

Software Then the software generates precision dimensions for finishing on the Profit H 200 pod and rail machine. These correspond to the design, and the program includes features, such as holes for our cam and dowel joints.” As well as manufacturing and fitting their joinery products, the software means they can also offer their products in flat-pack format, for customers who want to carry out the assembly themselves. It guarantees that the panels have the required high precision throughout, including overall dimensions, and the positioning of the cam and dowel holes. Neighbour Construction was formed in 2006 as a building company, working on walls, roofs, steelwork and foundations, before expanding to provide fit-outs with joinery and cabinetry for kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Having successfully built a strong reputation, he felt the time was right to take the company to the next level, which involved moving to a bigger workshop and investing in CNC machinery. At 3,000 square feet, their current premises in Edmonton, North London, are between three and four times the size of their old factory, and they now operate with five employees. “The combination of

machinery and CABINET VISION helps keep costs down, while ensuring that everything we produce is right first time, every time.” Working mainly with moistureresistant MDF Medite , Birch Plywood, and other veneered MDFs, the first part of their process is to design the individual cabinets and the room layout in CABINET VISION. “We even use it if we’re only creating a couple of cabinets. I can’t imagine doing any joinery cabinet work without it now. The 3D design - already has the NC codes behind it, which means we only need to do the work once. Then we produce the cutlists. The process really is that simple. “With CABINET VISION we have an image of what we’re cutting, so we can see the panels both on-screen and on printouts, and we have a list of dimensions for the operator to follow, along with the labels for each panel which are printed in sequence. Our machine operators follow the cuts on the list, and we can easily keep order of the panels, and know which programs need to be executed to build a bespoke cabinet. “It also shows the amount of material we need, which helps us get accurate costings.” In conclusion, he says CABINET VISION gives the business greater capacity, as it only takes a couple of days to get product from design to installation, if necessary. “I can’t imagine producing precision products this quickly if we were using traditional methods. “CABINET VISION makes a major contribution to us being a real game player today.”

Case Study HOMAG Opens Doors For Hazlin Of Ludlow Since the company’s incorporation in April 1974, Hazlin has devoted itself to becoming the best manufacture of bespoke architecturally veneered doors, panels, frames and other related joinery items. Operating from its 40,000 sq. ft. premises in Ludlow the company has a turnover in excess of £7.5 million. “Over the years, we’ve developed specialist expertise in everything from door design and fire resistance to veneer matching issues and acoustic ratings,” explains Hazlin of Ludlow’s managing director, Chris Jones. He continues, “In the 45 years we’ve been in business, the market has changed beyond recognition and so have the manufacturing processes. “Our goal has always been to ensure that the business has the capability to keep pace with the changing needs of the market. It is for this very reason that we have recently invested close on £1 million pounds to improve our manufacturing efficiencies. “A major part of this investment has gone into new machinery from HOMAG UK. Hazlin has been dealing with HOMAG for more than 20 years now and in that time we’ve come to appreciate the quality and technical advantages their equipment brings to the table.” A bottleneck in storage and retrieval “Increasingly, we were experiencing downtime on the saw because of issues in retrieving stock. We have the capability to use a wide variety of cores in our door production and this brought its own challenges when it came to storage and retrieval.

40

Panel & Joinery Production - May / June 2019

“The less popular door cores had a habit of ending up at the bottom of a pile of stock, so it tended to take a long time to find the relevant core, de-stack it, deliver it to the saw and then go back and re-stack the door cores we’d moved to access it. “HOMAG’s ‘saw & store’ system has changed all that. Our setup uses the STORETEQ S-500 linked to the SAWTEQ B-400 beam saw. It has revolutionised the efficiency of the saw and given us ultimate traceability of our stock. That’s really important for us; it’s so much better and more accurate than the old paper system. “Now we can prove exactly what product has been used in each job which, when you make fire doors, is extremely important for third party accreditation. In terms of efficiency, the results are even more impressive, with our throughput having increased dramatically. “Currently a cut list is being completed within around six days of being issued and we plan to get that down to three days as we maximise the system’s potential. Historically, with the manual storage and retrieval system, it took two to three weeks to complete each cutting list, so the efficiency gains are massive. “Also, we can now operate the saw with one person, not two which means we can deploy the second member of the team to carry out important tasks elsewhere in the facility.”

HOMAG EDGETEQ S-800 with LOOPTEQ return system for increased production efficiency

Case Study

HOMAG EDGETEQ S-800 with LOOPTEQ return system “The second area where we were looking to gain improvements in efficiencies was edge banding. Our existing machine was nearly 20 years old and required five people to operate it when we were running at full capacity. “We sat down with Jon Lawman, our contact at HOMAG, and briefed him on what we wanted the edge bander to deliver. He came back with a very thorough proposal for the specification at a competitive price and so we went ahead and ordered the EDGETEQ S-800 with a bespoke return system that would handle the various door sizes we produce. “The new S-800 runs at 18 m/min compared with the old machine which could only produce 10 m/min. What’s more, we are able to achieve this with just two operators, giving us further labour efficiencies. “The new machine has the potential to edge doors up to 76 mm thick with solid wood lipping. This is very important for us as many of our doors are over 60 mm thick. For our purposes, we specified the PUR glue system which gives us a good visual appearance with a very strong bond.” The next generation CNC “Rounding off our investment with HOMAG, we have a new CENTATEQ P-300 CNC on order which is due for delivery in the second quarter 2019. We already have two HOMAG CNCs which have consistently performed reliably and delivered excellent results. As a consequence, when it came to ordering a new machine, HOMAG was our first choice.

“The CENTATEQ P-300, with its five axis spindle, will be a great addition to our CNC portfolio. It will easily handle lock case routing, step drilling for drillin hinges and precise miter cuts. As with the other new machinery, this CNC will further improve our efficiency.” A professional company with first class machinery “When you invest in HOMAG machinery you know what you are going to get. The kit is reliable and wellengineered, as you’d expect from a German company. Not only that, but because HOMAG is the global market leader, you also know that the machines are at the cutting edge of technology. “The HOMAG UK team are always willing to support us. For example, the purchase package HOMAG finance put together through Deutsche Bank for the purchase of the new machines was simple to arrange and tailored to our needs. “As a company, they always seem to be looking for ways to improve their products and service levels. It’s an approach which sets them apart from many of their competitors,” concludes Chris Jones.

Dust Extraction Energy-Saving DCS Retrofit For Rosebirch The joinery workshop at Rosebirch Ltd is now cleaner and quieter thanks to a new dust extraction filter unit and energy-saving Ecogate® system supplied and installed by Dust Control Systems Ltd. Rosebirch is a second generation family-run business, operating from a modern 12,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility at High Spen – a former mining village in Tyne & Wear. Utilising materials as diverse as hardwood and glass, metals, veneers and solid surfaces, Rosebirch specialises in bespoke fabrication for the fit-out of retail and commercial spaces, and has established a reputation for its work on projects throughout the UK and Europe. The joinery workshop at Rosebirch is well-equipped with a wide range of wood and panel processing machinery, including an array of saws, sanders, planers and a high-speed CNC router. However, the ageing filter unit was no longer capable of dealing effectively with the extraction volumes being demanded by the company’s high speed production machinery and, inevitably, a replacement was necessary.

Ecogate® greenBOX12, PowerMASTER variable speed drive unit, and DCS control cabinet.

Dust Control Systems (DCS), on personal recommendation, had been invited to review the company’s extraction requirements and Ray Townley, Area Sales Manager for DCS, visited Rosebirch to discuss the project with Managing Director, Stephen Flynn. “Due to the varied and bespoke items being manufactured at Rosebirch”, says Ray Townley, “the factory is kitted out with a wide range of dustproducing machines but, for most of the time, only a handful of those machines are actually in use. On occasions, however, around half the machines could be in operation at the same time. Building in a wide margin of safety, and future-proofing the system to accommodate additional or more powerful machinery, DCS proposed the installation of a filter unit that was sized to handle around 75% of the total combined extraction requirement of all the machines in the factory.” To achieve this 25% reduction in extraction requirement, and the obvious cost savings this could realise, the system design proposed by DCS would employ Ecogate® energy-saving technology, with Ecogate® automatic dampers retrofitted into the existing ductwork system. Accompanied by Ian Rayner, Ecogate’s Sales Manager, Ray Townley and Stephen Flynn visited another DCS customer in the North East to observe an Ecogate® system in action, and to get first hand feedback from an end user on the potential benefits. “With Ecogate® technology, the extraction system is optimised to provide the exact extraction volume required, at any given point in time, depending on the number of machines in use,” explains Ian Rayner. “Extraction fan speed is adjusted automatically, in real-time, to match the changing requirements as different machines come on or offline.”

15,000m3/hr capacity ATEX-approved NFSZ3000 2HJLR filter unit delivers waste pressure-free via rotary valve

44

Panel & Joinery Production - May / June 2019

“The savings calculations, based on the predicted reductions in electricity costs derived from optimising the fan speed, compared with the cost of electricity needed to run the fan continuously, at full power, throughout Rosebirch’s working day, convinced

Dust Extraction Stephen that the initial outlay on Ecogate would be a sound investment.” At Rosebirch, DCS installed a greenBOX12 controller and PowerMASTER variable speed drive unit, along with a total of 12 Ecogate automatic dampers, which were all installed into the existing ductwork system. Externally, DCS supplied and installed an NFSZ3000 2HJLR Rotary Valve Filter, powered by a 22kW direct drive main fan, providing an air volume capacity of 15,000m3/hr. Filtered dust is delivered pressure-free from the filter unit, via a rotary valve, to a waste collection skip. The filter unit employs patented antistatic Superbag filter media, and a reverse air regeneration fan provides effective cleaning of the filter bags. Inspection and maintenance of the filter media is facilitated by side doors, which are accessed via an elevated steel walkway, and cleaned, warm air is recycled to keep the factory warm in winter, or dispersed to atmosphere in the summer. “As soon as the new filter came on-line the increased strength of the suction was immediately apparent,” says Stephen Flynn, “but, because the extraction fan was only running when needed, and only extracting from machines that were being used, the overall sound levels on the factory floor have been significantly reduced.” Rosebirch’s upgraded extraction system complies fully with ATEX regulations, and also includes a CARZ back-pressure isolation valve which, in the event of an explosion in the filter unit, prevents the effects of a pressure wave and flames travelling back along ductwork, and into the factory. The return air ductwork

22kW main fan and CARZ explosion isolation valve

has been retained from the previous installation and Gallito’s FastClip ducting has been used to complete external connections.

Woodwaste Timber Frame Specialist Benefits From Investment In Wood Waste Heater A business that designs and builds timber frame buildings has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal bills and heating costs. White Haus is one of the UK’s leading providers of timber frame homes and modular buildings. Established in 2004, the company operates from its 650 sq metre workshop based on the Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire border. Managing Director of White Haus, Adam White started to look at ways to reduce the amount of money spent on waste disposal whilst also finding a solution to the problem of the freezing cold workshop in the winter months. Someone suggested he looked into the benefits of investing in a wood waste heater and referred him to Wood Waste Technology. Following more information and a site survey, Adam ordered a WT15 which was installed earlier this year by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Adam says: “Our workshop was freezing cold in winter and we were spending around £1800 a month on skip hire to dispose of waste wood, so a wood waste heater seemed an obvious investment to efficiently dispose of our waste wood whilst generating free heating for our 30 employees.”

The company also purchased an add-on heat-dumpsystem to provide the flexibility to send the heat to the atmosphere rather than into the factory in the warmer months. Adam says: “This was definitely the right route for our business. It’s a good investment that will save us money whilst providing a more comfortable working environment for our staff.”

The WT5 Wood Waste heater installed at Tees Tech Joinery

Kurt Cockroft says: “A wood waste heater is most definitely a cost effective and productive solution for companies that generate a large amount of waste wood, and the investment can pay back within less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.
