News WEINIG: Head of Communications Klaus Müller Leaves the Company Klaus Müller can look back on a remarkable 50 years with the leading technology provider for solid wood processing. During his long career, the 65-year-old has passed through many stations. He assumed his first responsibility as a trainer in the field of tools with an international sphere of activity. In product and sales training, he taught young WEINIG sales people technical know-how. Then he was entrusted with the management of the trade fairs. In 2004, his area of responsibility grew significantly when he was appointed Head of Marketing Communications. From this point on, Klaus Müller was also the single point of contact for trade journalists from all over the world. During his successful career, he actively accompanied WEINIG’s rapid development into a complete supplier for the entire value chain of solid wood processing with a high level of technical competence. During his time at WEINIG, the company’s product portfolio underwent technological change from simple four-siders to high-tech automated machines and from manually operated single machines to fully digital system solutions. From the beginning of his career, Klaus Müller has worked uninterruptedly for WEINIG and has been closely associated with the premium brand. His love of the sustainable material wood made the company his spiritual home. “Do what you can do, and do it with passion”, was not only his motto, but also shaped his appearances in the industry. The intensive exchange with people was of outstanding importance for the retiring Head of Communications. Looking back, he regards the many discussions with experts as an essential enrichment. He
was in his element when he communicated with the major trade fair companies, as well as in the countless meetings with media representatives. Around 80 of them experienced Klaus Müller’s departure from the international scene at this year’s LIGNA. We would like to thank Klaus Müller for the very good cooperation over many years and wish him all the best for the new phase of his life.As part of the viaWeinig strategy, the group’s marketing activities will be restructured. Oliver Kunzweiler (45) will take over as head of the central strategic Group marketing on 1 September 2019. In addition, Mr. Kunzweiler will assume operational management of marketing for the Solid Wood Division. The graduate mechanical engineer started his professional career as a development engineer for precision tools. This was followed by leading positions in the areas of product management, international sales and marketing at well-known companies in the automotive supply industry. Since joining WEINIG AG in 2015, Mr. Kunzweiler has been responsible for technical marketing in the WEINIG Group. “With the professional orientation of all marketing activities in the WEINIG Group, we are responding to the strong development of our Group,” says Kunzweiler. “Our aim is to consolidate our position in national and international markets, to focus on specific target groups and to sustainably expand this position.” We wish Mr. Kunzweiler all the best for the new challenge and look forward to continuing our good cooperation.

Profile New Masterwood Showroom On 15th July 2019 Masterwood GB started operating from new offices near Gatwick Airport with facilities for their first showroom. The specially designed and built offices will allow them to grow and take on more office staff to deal with servicing of machines, spare parts and training. This exciting time for Masterwood GB comes after the company achieved 10 years of trading in February 2019, although many of their staff have been connected with Masterwood Spa for up to 30 years. Masterwood are now working on the showroom which will start to operate by the end of September 2019. Once they have all the facilities set up various open days will be arranged to demonstrate the full capabilities of the latest CNC machines and all software packages that Masterwood have to offer. Bespoke product demonstrations will also be available for existing and new customers. Dedicated software packages for stairs, windows, cabinets, doors, furniture, and 3D are all available through Masterwood as a complete package, a unique situation in this industry.
Masterwood will be offering bespoke training packages to suit all levels and abilities for both CNC and software with their experienced technicians. With the uncertainty of Brexit and how imports into the country will be affected, the extra space will allow them to keep a larger stock of more vital spare parts, so in the event of a break down, they can get a machine up and running in the quickest time possible. A large supply of tooling, cones and collets as well as secondhand parts that are no longer obtainable for the older machines, will also be kept on site. While Masterwood GB has always helped customers who have brought second hand machines elsewhere and will be pleased to continue doing so, they will now be able to deal directly in more second hand Masterwood CNCs.
For an updated list or information on the CNC machines they have available, please contact the office by phone or by email. t: +44 (0)1293 402700 e: office@masterwoodgb.co.uk www.masterwoodgb.co.uk

Profile Digitization In Craft Shops – Combined With Perfectly Invisible Joints Continuously higher demands for quality as well as high expectations regarding customization and versatility have made digital solutions essential in the branch today. Protracted setup operations on edgebanders can be optimized for maximum profit and productivity using intelligent technology. Properly utilized, digital processes facilitate work in craft shops and industrial applications to the maximum. HOLZ-HER’s high end line, the LUMINA 4.0 Edition, is a burst of innovation with clear, measurable customer benefits. The machine simply scans the individual QR code and switches over to the required edge processing mode fully automatically. During this process, highly differing machining operations, pressure settings and various types of edging are taken into consideration automatically. This allows production of orders with highly differing lot sizes with extremely short setup times. Setup errors and reject quotas are reduced to a minimum. The LUMINA 4.0 Edition uses patented cutters with Air Stream technology, distinguished by extremely low noise emission. Chips are evacuated with lightening speed by the integrated blast nozzles, thus eliminating double machining and significantly increasing cutter service life. Moreover the new HSK chucks ensure perfectly concentric operation, eliminating long-term wear to motor, bearing and cutter. A new feature at HOLZ-HER is the multiple magazine, capable of feeding in laser edging as well as conventional edging fully automatically. This ensures that the proper edging material is aways selected for the operation in progress. The magazine has six different standard edging channels capable of handling all edging thicknesses and heights independently. If desired, the magazine can also be upgraded to include six additional channels for laser edging. Moreover it even offers a “joker”, i.e. an additional free channel for “occasional edging”. This provides absolute flexibility for smaller jobs “in between” without interrupting the established sequence for the multiple magazine. And it also allows automatic cycling between various channels, making it possible, for example, for you to fill channels 1 and 2 with identical edging material. As soon as channel 1 is empty, it switches over to channel 2 automatically, allowing continuous production without interruptions. The “large” Glu Jet 2K was developed especially for professional processing of large quantities of granulated PUR or EVA adhesive. The Glu Jet 2K allows use of the more economical, standard, commercially available 2 kg PUR glue cartridges. This investment amortizes itself quickly for companies using more than approx. 500 kg of PUR glue per year, i.e. customers with an average glue consumption of approx. 2 kg per day. The gluing station is conceived as a change-over station with HSK adapter and can be removed with the change-over carriage, making it even simpler to clean the glue application nozzle.
10
High end LUMINA 4.0 Edition series with clearly measurable customer benefits.
Moreover, thanks to the plug & play HSK mount, it can be equipped with additional glue application stations. The innovative control recognizes the specific equipment fully automatically. If desired, an LTronic unit is also available for laser edging. This allows virtually all types of edging and adhesives available on the market to be processed in excellent quality within a maximum of 3 minutes. The new, intelligent operator guidance on the LUMINA 4.0 Edition ensures even more intuitive adjustment of all cutter and shaper machining operations than in the past. At all times, the operator can identify which corrections need to be made in which direction on a graphic display. The values for tool feed entered on the control unit are converted fully automatically to the actual axis values in the background. This makes sample workpieces a thing of the past. “Setup in the gap” is one of the major themes for efficient edging operations. “Set-up in the gap” enables different machining processes to be run at the same time on the edgebander. For example, the corner rounding unit or pivoting of the trimming unit can be intelligently switched on, without having to empty the machine for the set-up procedure. All capacities are therefore utilized to the fullest. The air cushion table ensures that even heavy workpieces can be positioned in the machine easily and ergonomically. This allows the operator to concentrate on feeding the workpieces in parallel regardless of their size and weight. The workpiece pull-in device also provides additional support for the operator. The feed rollers, aligned at an angle of 3 degrees, press the workpiece into the run-in linear guide precisely, ensuring optimal workpiece alignment. The small part feed also allows small and narrow workpieces
Panel & Joinery Production - September / October 2019
Profile to be introduced into the machine while ensuring a perfect 90 degree angle at all times. The small part feed guides the workpiece completely until it is taken over by the machine, at which time it automatically returns to the operator. The LUMINA 4.0 Edition offers customers from craft shops and industrial production an efficient partner for easy integration into the HOLZ-HER Automation PRO concept. Premiere in upper middle class: Multi-function milling technology – highly efficient and affordable. Customers are continuously demanding more customization and material variety. Multiple profile technology is essential for modern carpentry shops to implement such demands productively and profitably. Since the Ligna 2019 the entire HOLZ-HER SPRINT series has offered multi-functional milling technology with multiple stage tools and revolving tool magazines. This allows machining of various radiuses or applications with a 45° bevel at the touch of a button. The new SPRINT 1329 Multi reduces your setup times enormously and even allows production of small lots at any time. On the inside, the SPRINT 1329 Multi operates with assemblies from the high-end series with play-free mechanical systems and high precision, fully digital NC servo-axes, guaranteeing precise positioning with 100% repetition accuracy. The desired profile on the diamond, multi-stage tool can be selected on the 18.5” touch screen with wide band format. The unit then moves into position automatically. The new NC drives and play-free mechanical systems are also integrated into the dual-motor shaping cutter. The revolving tool magazine allows the shaping cutter unit to be set to a number of different profiles fully automatically. The fully automatic scraper unit performs the final machining operation. Two different profiles can be selected at the touch of a button.
Reduced setup times, exclusively excellent quality and enormous variety are natural features of this machine. The new, high performance SPRINT 1329 Multi is HOLZ-HER’s answer to providing a universal, smart edgebander. RETURN MASTER 5920 Workpiece return for efficient oneperson operation Automation is becoming increasingly important even in smaller workshops, to ensure they remain competitive and operate profitably. The RETURN MASTER sets the stage for automated edgebanding, regardless of whether mass production or lot sizes of one. This HOLZ-HER return feature provides for efficient one-person operation for higher productivity and maximum flexibility. The 5920 RETURN-MASTER is perfectly matched to the SPRINT, ACCURA and LUMINA series edgebanders from HOLZ-HER. The tilting air cushion table as well as the certified safety package are absolute quality features for safe workplaces. Moreover it is easy to process special parts. The pneumatic discharge table allows even larger workpieces to be removed easily by the machine operator. Drives and guides are distinguished by their extremely long service life and exceptionally low maintenance requirements. In addition to low energy requirements, a further advantage is automatic speed adaptation. Another exceptional feature of the HOLZHER RETURN MASTER is its particularly heavy and stable design. With a total weight of 2 tons, the RETURN MASTER sets its own standards for endurance and process reliability. In many cases economical one-man operation allows the return feature to pay for itself within a very short time.

Case Study DAMS Furniture Celebrates More Than 30 Years Partnering With HOMAG UK DAMS Furniture began life in Liverpool in 1967 as the Dictating & Adding Machine Services company repairing business machines. The company then started selling filing cabinets which led to an opportunity to supply office desks to Liverpool Council. Unable to find any suitable products, DAMS made the decision to manufacture the desks themselves! “From this acorn,” explains DAMS Furniture’s managing director, Chris Scott, “has grown a £44 million turnover business employing just shy of 300 people and occupying a quarter of a million sq. ft. of manufacturing and storage space. As the company continued to grow and became more successful, we began investing in top end woodworking machinery to enable us to produce high quality ranges of office furniture. “Our relationship with HOMAG began over 30 years ago and has developed into a strong and extremely successful partnership. As the leading global woodworking machinery brand, HOMAG sets the benchmark for the rest of the industry. Its heritage shines through its products; German
engineering skills are world renowned and you can clearly see how this manifests itself with HOMAG equipment – it really is in a class of its own.”
The need for a new edge bander and beam saw “Over the years we have made a considerable investment in HOMAG equipment which has all, without exception, performed reliably and delivered excellent quality results. Consequently, when it came to changing our 15 year old edge banders, HOMAG was top of our list for a suitable replacement. “Despite our faith in the HOMAG brand, however, it wouldn’t have been prudent if we didn’t carry out due diligence to ensure we get the right solution for the business. After all, advanced equipment like this is a significant investment. “The choice for high performance double-sided edge banders is fairly narrow and after researching the market we opted to order an EDGETEQ D-610 double sided edge bander from HOMAG with a feeding table and rotary system. This new edge bander underpins quality and capacity for DAMS.

Case Study
HOMAG EDGETEQ D-610 double sided edge bander
“We elected to have a semi-automatic feeding table that queues up the panels and a rotary system that rotates the panels to the correct orientation as required. This helps the operators keep up with the speed of the machine and delivers maximum throughput capacity.”
Making sure the new saw cut the mustard “The decision on which beam saw to get was less straightforward. We evaluated a number of brands and carried out site visits around the UK to see various solutions in action. The requirement for a new saw came about because of a shift in customer demand towards a wider choice of products and smaller batch size production. This meant the need to cut high volumes of different sized panels quickly and accurately using a variety of different board types. “Long-term, we not only wanted the right beam saw, but one that would also integrate with an automated storage system that could manage a large stock of boards and deliver them to the saw automatically as and when required. This need narrowed down our search and after visiting HOMAG in Germany and carrying out site visits there too, we were convinced that the SAWTEQ B-400 with an integrated lifting table was the ideal solution for DAMS. “Not only is this model a high quality and extremely efficient beam saw, it will also integrate seamlessly with the new automated HOMAG board storage system that we will be installing soon.
EDGETEQ D-610 double-sided edge bander from HOMAG The EDGETEQ D-610 profiLine edge bander formats, profiles and edges furniture workpieces on two sides in a single run. It is ideal for producing medium to large series at a high performance level with few changeovers. The precise edge processing produces first class results which are enhanced by the enclosed frame design that delivers vibration-free operation with optimum trimming patterns. In terms of edging technology the EDGETEQ D-610 is extremely flexible, offering the use of hot melt glue, PU or zero-joint technology. It also features optimised chip and offcut disposal which helps minimise machine downtime and reduces servicing requirements.
SAWTEQ B-400 with integrated lifting table The SAWTEQ B-400 is a high-performance saw for processing larger volumes of panels in finish cut quality. The saw works reliably and precisely at high speed and delivers high throughput. It features a high saw blade projection which provides flexibility for cutting books or individual panels. With this model a high degree of customisation means the saw can be configured exactly to requirements. DAMS Furniture specified the model with an integrated lifting table which automatically feeds boards thus speeding

Case Study up the production processes by a considerable margin. This is particularly beneficial for frequently cut panels made from the same material or those cut in books. Even in standard trim, the SAWTEQ B-400 offers the full range of technical features and can be used either as a standalone machine, interlinked with other machines or as part of a production line. Equipped with the latest CADmatic 5 control software, the SAWTEQ B-400 is extremely energy efficient thanks to intelligent ecoPlus technologies and is intuitive to operate, ergonomic and low maintenance.
Support and training that deliver results Chris Scott again, “Throughout the specifying and purchasing
processes we were supported extremely well by both Jon Lawman (HOMAG’s area manager) and the entire HOMAG team in the UK and Germany. “HOMAG’s after sales service is first class with excellent technical support which has developed considerably in recent years. Their external diagnostics, spare parts service and engineer support for maintenance are excellent, mirroring the superb German engineering of the machinery. “Training on the machinery was very thorough. For the edge bander it was all done on site. For the saw, however, we sent three of our team to Germany for several days training two weeks prior to the installation of the equipment. In addition, the HOMAG UK engineers trained our operators onsite to ensure that we maximise the machine’s potential going forward.
“In terms of the impact the new edge bander and saw have had on the business, we’ve seen a significant uplift in output, a reduction in direct labour costs, lower wastage and a general overall efficiency improvement. We’ve also seen a quality enhancement, as we’re achieving a much better edge quality using the new HOMAG machine,” concludes Chris Scott.

SCM Surface Technologies: A Unique Partner In Surface Treatment SCM has always placed importance on surface treatment and was the first to believe in the importance of having technologies for finishing as part of its range which, thanks to the synergy between the sanding, coating and painting processes, prove to be invaluable on the market. Furthermore, SCM provides its clients with specific laboratories for this sector like the Superfici Technology Center in Villasanta (Monza), the Surface Tech Lab in Villa Verucchio (Rimini) as well as other finishing laboratories in foreign branches. Thanks to its vast and consolidated know-how, SCM is in a position to offer a wide range of technologies for sanding, pressing and finishing, distinguishing itself as a unique partner in the entire surface treatment process: a complete range of products and services as well as exclusive, soughtafter finishing solutions that are integrated with each other to meet all the process and end product type requirements. The innovative dmc system operator units which transform the concept of sanding machine into a flexible abrasive modular centre, Superfici systems, a vast and varied range of automatic spraying machines or robotic solutions, both for painting and gluing, and the sergiani 3d form presses which allow for uneven surfaces to be ennobled, are some of the key technology players in this “integrated vision”. These solutions allow for surfaces to be prepared and treated to produce finished products with a 3D finishing effect like wave designs, hand smoothed, structured, band saw and worm hole, capable of conveying unique touch and visual sensations. If the Surface Tech Lab at Villa Verucchio (Rimini) is a point of reference for specific sanding and pressing technologies aimed at creating and coating complex surfaces, the Superfici Technology Centre in Villasanta (Monza), rounds off the offer with painting always integrated with other essential steps, especially sanding. “We are talking about 360 degree surface treatment because this process involves varying essential processes: sanding, pressing and painting. - explains Alberto Fiorani, business unit manager in charge of SCM technologies on the subject
16
of sanding, sizing, pressing, assembly and packaging. “This is market demand, constantly in search of an integrated approach and solid points of reference with specialised skills, thanks to which a large part of a process can be handled well and safely”. Gloria Valtorta, Superfici’s business unit manager, adds: “We deal with finishing, painting, tactile aspects, aesthetics and sensitivity... This is our mission within the Group. An important challenge because we are talking about appearance, that first impression when you find yourself in front of a unit, a piece of furniture, a door or a window. We are specialists strongly integrated into the Group’s work, world leader in technologies for secondary wood processing. The technical and technological part of the finishing and painting is in our DNA and everything is devised, designed, planned and manufactured at Villasanta: whether we are talking about a line to integrate into a new plant produced by the Group’s Engineering or a machine that a longstanding or new client asked us for. At Superfici we cover everything”. THE INTEGRATED PROJECT SCM’s integrated project shows how sanding, pressing and painting can produce unexpected results both at a creative and aesthetic level as well as good performance results. The three-dimensional surfaces “sculpted” by the dmc system models are a solid example capable of providing an optimal sanding to the panel, before it is coated in glue using Superfici spraying system and perfectly covered with a plastic film thanks to a sergiani membrane press. This involves making use of all the know-how and knowing how to integrate it. The new laboratory at Villa Verucchio was set up to welcome clients who, starting with an idea, are looking to test the concrete result with the help of the team of SCM professionals. “Together with our clients, we study the best process and the machines best suited to intervening at the various stages - sanding, painting, pressing - to achieve the best solution, by working together. All this while availing of the services of “specialised technicians” explains Fiorani. At Villa Verucchio, the best of SCM solutions are made

Profile available to clients and their technicians, like the dmc system, top of the range models that can be configured for any kind of usage. They are modular machines that can house different units inside whose action, when adequately combined, means almost any kind of surface can be achieved, from the simplest sanding job to genuine sculptures. This latter machinery can produce a regular or perfectly “random” weaving, as is the case with the “band saw effect” on a wooden surface, a floor, to create a completely natural surface. These are machines where different elements can be inserted, longitudinal or trasversal sanding, super finisher units or units like the “Planetario”: this unit allows many different sanding process thanks to three different movements; for example by using orbital brush discs it can perfectly sand solid wood door frames, windows frames or kitchen cabinets. After carrying out all the tests required with the different solutions made available to the client, the most suitable technology is configured by bringing together as many as ten different units in a single machine, the combination of units with which the client will be able to do all the machining required. All these potentials make these machines genuine “sanding centres”: flexible abrasive machining centres that can create a wide and varying range of different surfaces, changing from one machining process to another completely different one in a very short space of time. In the Surface Tech Lab at Villa Verucchio, there is also a Superfici corner with mini plug&spray spraying machine which offers all the advantages of an automatic spraying in a small case of efficiency and simplicity.
Adding Superfici mini – SCM’s entry level automatic spraying machine – will enable you to either paint your panels and doors, or coat them with glue. This is quite literally a plug and spray machine for anyone who wants to make the move up from hand spraying to automatic spraying and it’s been priced to suit smaller users. Superfici mini can handle different working programs and be fully connected, making things easier for the customer to handle orders and keep quality under control. All the parameters can be controlled and that means high quality and consistency, as well being able to control cost. More and more customers want this kind of integration. To complete the integrated project developed by SCM, there is also the new range of sergiani 3d form pressing solutions for laminating curved panels and those with threedimensional effects. This model can offer a vast range of stand-alone or integrated solutions in automatic lines to meet the varying production needs. The pressing cycle is electronically adjustable and programmable at each stage to

ensure the best panel finish according to the material being processed, guaranteeing top quality surfaces and gluing, plus a highly versatile application. Another Superfici technological solution that can be perfectly integrated with the SCM models for sanding and pressing is Superfici bravorobot. “This machine is more suitable for higher production. It offers increased accuracy when glue spraying and it has the technology on board to cope with more complicated shapes” Gloria Valtorta explains. Typically, for spraying adhesive, you would want one gun dedicated to edge spraying that has specific nozzles and a fan size that’s effective on vertical sides, and two guns on a robotic arm for the surface with different nozzles to apply very little adhesive. With the bravorobot, the gun nozzle angle can be controlled for the edge but for the surface, the guns are fixed on the arm. We can select where to apply more
glue and where to apply less glue very easily so more can be applied on the edges and a mist can be applied to the surface. SCM and Superfici offer different nozzles to spray inside groove. It’s a very versatile machine. “We have engineers and technicians ready to develop any idea, devise new products and experiment with them thanks to the extremely new Technology Center in Villasanta continues Gloria Valtorta -. We invest a great deal in applied research. Being able to do all this here at Superfici, means we can control the entire process, from the idea to checking its efficiency, developing new possibilities, evolutions on the process and product, on a daily basis, that go on to become part of the more evolved expertise in the industry, transmitted by SCM today around the world”.

Company Profile Twenty One Years of TFS Established in 1998, Trade Fabrication Systems (TFS), the UK’s leading business-to-business offsite processor of timber related building products, has evolved and diversified its service offering over the years to deliver innovative solutions to the construction industry. Howard Morris, former General Manager and now Managing Director, has celebrated TFS’ 21st year (and a personal decade with the company), by marking the momentous occasion with a year-long investment programme to further enhance service offering. TFS’ roots started with the development of peel-off protective films to protect surfaces during the build process. Since then, TFS has worked closely with business-to-business partners to provide the industry with cost-effective solutions to add value and improve quality. By diversifying TFS has established itself as a processing partner for leading names in the timber industry, utilising the latest manufacturing processes and delivering innovative coating and premachining solutions. From client-supplied plywood that can be factory-finished to any RAL colour for corporate hoarding and site-protection, to pre-finished, factory machined doors that are ready for immediate installation – TFS is committed to delivering cost-effective, quality solutions efficiently. In celebration of 21 years of trade, TFS has embarked on a £500,000 investment programme to expand the service offering, improve internal operations and continue business-to-business innovation. Following the 2007/2008 recession, the company’s core ethos has been in diversity and innovation to ensure it can proactively react to changes in the market whilst strategically stabilising growth. As offsite manufacturing is becoming embedded in site processes for many construction firms in the UK, TFS has evolved its service offering to meet demand. Howard Morris, Managing Director at TFS, commented: “Since joining TFS in 2009, I have helped drive diversification so that we can service the needs of our clients and offer innovative solutions to help add value to timber substrates.
Door processing machine Designed specifically for use at TFS’ facility, the most recent introduction to the factory line has been a state-of-the-art door processing machine, which has enhanced the service offering for doors. Providing accurate and high-speed precision machining, TFS can cut hinge plates, mortice locks and vision panels – resulting in ‘ready to hang’, fully factoryfinished doors. The new line enhances the original coating potential for doors, and now helps to increase overall quality, reduce damage to finished doors onsite and become more efficient. As well as enhancing in-house capabilities, TFS works closely with industry partners to deliver innovative solutions scalable for mainstream manufacture. Most recently, in partnership with BSW Timber, TFS has assisted in the processing of the IRO Timber range. Decorative Surfaces Benif Interior Film’s Finish, Installation Speed And Minimum Disruption Impresses At Berkshire Hotel. Easthamstead Park Hotel, owned by Active Hospitality, is an impressive Victorian mansion set in 60 acres of parkland near Wokingham, Berkshire. With 29 bedrooms, 17 conference rooms, an orangery, restaurant and bars, the hotel can offer companies and individuals a wide range of services and facilities. Benif Interior Film from surface material distributors David Clouting, was recently used to refurbish the hotel’s reception desks, servery units and a coffee station by specialist contractors WRAPT. The hotel’s Group Interior Designer takes up the story: “I contacted WRAPT about our reception desks that needed an uplift before our main refurbishment started. Following their site visit, WRAPT’s quote was very favourable as against replacing all the desks and other reception furniture!
which was great. We were so pleased with the results we asked the company to refurbish our servery units and coffee stations which they did in only two days - while we had conferences taking place! The finish of the Benif Interior Film looks good and is very hardwearing so it’s well worth looking to refurbish your furniture rather than replace it.” The reception desks were ‘wrapped’ with Benif’s Travertine and Teak finish Interior Film, the coffee station with Benif Travertine and the servery units with a Benif marble effect Interior Film. Manufactured by LG Hausys, Benif is a self-adhesive, architectural film that can be quickly and easily applied to almost any interior surface.
In only three weeks following the initial contact, we had a finished, refurbished reception desk!
With over 400 Benif designs and finishes to choose from, desks, doors, paneling, skirting and architrave can be quickly transformed without the need for costly replacement furniture.
WRAPT completed the works in just a few days, while we were open, so it caused very little disruption to the business,
Benif Interior Film has CE and IMO Certification.

Software ALPHACAM Key In Voltomic’s Climb To Success A new Olympic sport next year highlights importance of 5-axis nesting A company specialising in manufacturing components for climbing walls makes full use of saw blades, end mills, drills and other tools as part of a complex and sophisticated machining process, just a year after investing in their first CNC machine tool and ALPHACAM software. Voltomic’s wall structures add a new dimension to climbing and bouldering. As well as building new climbing walls the company can construct routes on pre-existing walls. “It’s possible to create a completely new wall shape, fast and comfortably, giving customers maximum variety,” says Joint Managing Director Stephan Müller. The base material for their applications is multiplex birch panels that are bonded with a PU polyurethane reactive adhesive before being screwed together. Until about a year ago the team still did everything manually, including cutting the birch panels, along with the large prism climbing features (known as volumes) that are attached to the wall, mini boards, profiles and bolder walls, with portable circular saws, orbital sander and cordless screwdrivers. How different today. Stephan and his brother Thomas realised that they needed to take a new technologyfocused approach for the company to grow and have now implemented a 5-axis nesting process on their recently acquired Format-4 Profit H 500 MT machine tool, programmed with ALPHACAM software. “The times when
we went through a handful of portable circular sawblades every day to machine the birch panels are well and truly over,” he says. It also means they can now offer a vast number of different volume shapes. In addition to the now 1,500 standard shapes – prior to investing in the Format-4 and APHACAM they could only 50 – the company can easily configure almost any new shape. Stephan uses Sketchup to initially model new volumes from planar sections. Then ALPHACAM enters the equation, with its STL Hans extension for transforming STL files

into a compatible CNC format identifying those planar sections within the 3D space and preparing them for panel generation. The ALPHACAM panel macro then automatically creates the panels to the specified thickness, including connectors and the required mitres, before splitting them into individual component files. ALPHACAM’S Automation Manager compiles production jobs from any number of those components. “After that it only needs a mouse click to start machining. The process includes the high-performance nesting tool arranging them for optimum material yield (saving up to 15 per cent in material, compared with the former process) and cycle times. It also has to take a sophisticated perforation pattern into account. “The 5-axis CNC machine then starts by drilling what will become the volumes’ outsides – this includes blind holes for sinking screws. After this, the panel is rotated for the rest of the machining.” During the process, the saw blade, end mill, drill and other tools are all applied as part of what Stephan calls a “sophisticated machining process.” He says ALPHACAM identifies important details. “For example, as part of 5-axis formatting, around 0.5mm is left at the bottom, guaranteeing that even the smallest parts can be safely machined without slipping out of place. The final cut is only made once all CNC machining has been completed. A number is engraved into each of the 20 to 30 parts from
one nest, making it clear where each one belongs in the final assembly.” The complete panel machining process takes between 45 minutes and one hour at Voltomic’s premises in Rosenheim, Bavaria…and the company’s choice of end mill ensures machine downtime for changing cutting tools is kept to a minimum. Formatting multiplex material quickly wears out hardened metal blades, so Voltomic use diamonds. “When we purchased the Format-4, cutting tool manufacturer Aigner recommended Konstantin Mini, an end mill using replaceable milling and drilling diamond blades. According to Aigner, the downtime when cutting applied multiplex panels is reduced by up to 30 per cent with diamond blades, compared to hardened metal tools.” Concluding, Stephan Müller says: “ALPHACAM is our paramount software tool. Its high-performance nesting optimises the arrangement of many individual parts in the panels and generates all the required CNC programs. The combination of this 5-axis nesting on the Format-4 Profit gives complete rational machining through sophisticated strategies. “This will become increasingly important in the near future. We currently produce around 5,000 climbing wall volumes a year, but production figures are expected to grow as climbing will become an Olympic sport in 2020.”

Software Software Changes Business Model Lean Manufacturing For BSG With Cabinet Vision And Alphacam An award-winning Irish furniture manufacturer producing quality, bespoke joinery, kitchens and furniture for high end office fitouts, says introducing CABINET VISION and ALPHACAM into their company, completely changed their business model. BSG Design Ltd was founded by brothers Barry and Stephen Goulding, at Trim, County Meath, in 2013. Three years later they reached the final of “Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur,” and in 2017 won the Meath “Best Small to Medium Enterprise” and “Overall Best Business.” Barry attributes their success to attention to detail in their design and planning, and short project timescales. “Using ALPHACAM and CABINET VISION has pretty much doubled the size of the business by improving efficiency in the production processes.” The majority of their work is bespoke high-end office and kitchen fitouts including reception counters, wall panelling and tea stations for prestigious customers such as PayPal, IBM, Ernst & Young, Irish Life, Northern Trust Bank, and
Gourmet Food Parlour, with the remainder being domestic kitchens and cabinetry. Prior to investing in their 4-axis SCM Pratix CNC nesting machine, the company operated with a panel saw, but now 70 per cent of their work goes through CABINET VISION, and 30 per cent through ALPHACM, with an overlap of around 20 per cent of jobs being handled by both. Barry first used the software while studying at the GMIT Letterfrack College in Ireland for his Design and Manufacture qualification and Furniture Design degree. “After graduating, I worked in the industry for around ten years, for furniture companies, and could see how much more efficient they’d be if they used CABINET VISION and ALPHACAM.” So, when he started his own company, it was always the plan that CNC machinery and the CAD/CAM software would be introduced. He now carries out CAD drawings and 3D renders in CABNET VISION, and uses its powerful Screen to Machine tool to communicate all the engineering data directly to the Pratix.

Barry Goulding (right) with brother Stephen The 4-axis SCM Pratix CNC nesting machine utilising both Alphacam and Cabinet Vision software A number of bespoke programs to manage aspects such as Keku clips and locks have been set up via the software’s User Created Standards (USCs). “These bespoke USCs write specific code for us to enable the software to do exactly what we need for particular individual tasks.” And, as BSG manufacture cabinets to suit customer requirements, they use the software to set different construction methods. “For example, we may be working on an inframe unit, and the next job could be a slab door with a chamfer back handle detail and a checkout in the carcass for the handle rail. Or switching between rafix and dowel jointing, as details vary from project to project. So it’s invaluable to be able to vary the construction methods on how each item is made, quickly and simply.” He describes how they originally used 2D software for their panel saw, and that “huge” time savings have now been achieved by drawing a 3D model in CABINET VISION, as all the toolpaths for the CNC are generated automatically. “Screen to Machine sends accurate NC code for everything we’ve put on the model, out to the machine tool. For example, if we put drawers or any cabinet fittings on the model, all the mounting holes are machined in the various positions correctly, without us having to do anything else.” Barry Goulding says with CABINET VISION taking care of standard shaped cabinets, it was a natural progression for them to bring in ALPHACAM to tackle more complex components such as curved reception counters, and other items that could not be cut with CABINET VISION. The two software brands from the Production Software stable of Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence have played a major contribution in overcoming BSG’s biggest challenge, which was meeting the extremely short deadlines required from customers. “Basically, once the CAD drawings are done and approved, we’re almost there, because getting the CNC program, the saw cutlist, assembly sheets and labels with manufacturing information from the 3D model is very fast.” While they tender to main contractors, they are often recommended by architects and interior designers, who
hexagonmi.com are impressed with their speed, efficiency and the high quality product finish. “Once we’ve tendered we get a set of drawings, usually as a PDF, and build our ALPHACAM and CABINET VISION designs from those. Those original drawings from the client usually just show a general design idea and we need to incorporate accurate measurements and technical details for our own production, and for other trades such as plumbing and electrical.” Their designs regularly must take into account items which are not found in standard kitchens, such as large commercial fridges and commercial coffee machines. “And we frequently have to begin manufacture before walls are even built, to keep within the project timeline. Therefore, we often agree measurements with the contractor without going on site to get drawings approved, and then change the dimensions again just before production. But it’s so easy to modify the CABINET VISION models by dragging and dropping them, and changing their dimensions, so that the final NC code produces perfectly accurate cabinets for the room.” In conclusion, he says the software has also enabled them to implement a degree of lean manufacturing within BSG, which has helped change their business model. “We saw considerable benefits as soon as we started using CABINET VISION. As it creates each bespoke NC file from the CAD model in the office, there is a lot less downtime on the Pratix, as the manual input has been greatly reduced. These efficiencies have made the process considerably faster. And the way parts are presented has improved with labelling from CABINET VISION’S Label-IT, which means that nothing is forgotten once it has been inputted into the model. Anyone in the workshop can see a complete overview of the job. The manufacturing booklet created in CABINET VISION shows what’s required for each project, and the labels ensure an accurate flow of information from the office to the workshop, and finally for the fitters on site to see everything that’s required for the installation, even down to the number of hinges and handles, and that all the fittings are there.”

Case Study ROK European Kitchens selects HOMAG UK for new business venture ROK European Kitchens is a new venture that brings together a dynamic team with combined experience of over 100 years in the UK contract market. This positions ROK at the forefront of contemporary kitchen specification and design. The company works closely with architects, designers, developers and house builders to deliver high quality products and exceptional service. “From the start, our aim was to create a state of the art production facility in Essex,” explains ROK’s managing director, John White. He continues, “Although it is a new company, the senior team has a vast amount of experience in the industry. Our aim was to create a manufacturing facility that would give us a mix of automation, for speed and efficiency, blended with the flexibility of traditional craftsman’s skills. “The search for an equipment partner originally focused on a nesting machine. We looked at two suppliers, both of which we had had previous dealings. Initially, we felt that either of these two companies had the machinery that would do the job. “Being one hundred percent honest, we always wanted HOMAG equipment, but we didn’t think we could afford it. But in actual fact, the deal HOMAG offered us was better than that of the other supplier. So, having seen the machinery in action at the W18 exhibition, we worked closely with Charles Smith, the HOMAG area manager, and the HOMAG UK team to specify the machinery that would best suit our needs.” The ideal manufacturing cell “The goal was to create the ideal manufacturing cell to meet our development plans. This included a beam saw, CNC machining centre, edge bander, a drilling and dowel inserter,

HOLZ-HER offers a variety of CNC machine lines to provide the ideal solution for all users. Supplement to EVOLUTION 7405 doors The new, must-have feature for the 7405 4mat and Connect is the optional “Doors” package. It allows complete machining of door leaves with a maximum thickness of up to 70 mm. The optional EVOLUTION door package, consisting of a specially developed angle gear for lock boxes and a lock box cutter, expands the capabilities of this vertical CNC machine from HOLZ-HER. The door package allows complete machining of door leaves with a maximum thickness of up to 70 mm. This process machines the hinge side and lock side in two clamping operations. The 16 mm diameter end mill cutter supplied with the machine provides for milling depths of up to 115 mm, allowing installation of lock boxes with different backsets. Handle and lock holes can also be drilled precisely using HOPS macros. After turning and reclamping the door leaf, it is possible to recess hinges for rabbeted doors as well as install concealed hinges or fittings for object doors. The new EVOLUTION xcut package – for simple production of furniture components Vertical CNC machining with our “best performers”, the EVOLUTION 7402 and 7405 Connect: The EVOLUTION models offer complete, versatile and universal machining on all 4 edges in spite of their extremely low space requirement in your workshop. The latest feature on all EVOLUTION models is the Laser Plausibility Check. Here the exact height of the workpieces is read out of the machining program. This value is checked by a quick test run in the machine and any deviation in the tolerance is output as an error message. This accessory feature prevents operating errors and helps minimize material waste in your workshop. HOLZ-HER has introduced its xcut package as a new feature for the EVOLUTION models. With this package the vertical CNC machines automatically produce the required workpieces from panel strips previously cut in the longitudinal direction. This xcut mode completely eliminates cross-cuts otherwise required. The machine operator simply activates the xcut mode with a single click and positions the requested panel strips. The suction cups are automatically positioned on the machine, the material-friendly vacuum is activated and the machine started. During this machining process the parts are measured and subjected to a plausibility check fully automatically.
38
The software for the xcut mode lists all jobs pending on the machine. This provides the machine operator with a perfect overview of all jobs and the required strip material. After positioning the strip, the EVOLUTION starts its optimized cutting and four-sided formating operations. The strips are cut to the precise length, machined, and drilled as required. This process ensures that the entire surface of the panel strips is utilized optimally. The HOLZ-HER edgebanders offer the perfect supplement to the EVOLUTION CNC machines and the SECTOR line of vertical panel saws. Together they form an efficient production cell, for optimal combination of all production sequences. With the HOLZ-HER 5-axis CNC machines, your creativity has no limits. Tooling Italian Saw Blade Manufacturer Puts Its Trust In VOLLMER Steep mountain passes and narrow winding roads. This is how the first VOLLMER sharpening machine found its way through the Northern Italian Alps more than 25 years ago. Its destination was saw blade manufacturer Moreschi in the small town of Vilminore di Scalve. A strong partnership has linked the two companies ever since then. Moreschi relies on the VOLLMER CHD, CHF and CM model of grinding machines for sharpening carbide-tipped circular saws with precision and the Loroch KSC-710 series of machines for sharpening HSS circular saws. Brothers Marco and Luciano Moreschi founded Moreschi in 1987 in the Alpine town of Vilminore di Scalve. Starting out as a grinding centre for small workshops, the company soon began specialising in the production of custom-made circular and band saw blades. Moreschi now employs more than 40 staff and supplies its products to customers in Italy and beyond. The saw blade manufacturer also runs a grinding centre in Poland. Founded on family values and reliable partners Despite its growth and international focus, tradition and family play a major part in the company’s success. Moreschi shares close ties with its home in the Bergamasque Alps, where it was founded. Now, the second generation of the family is involved in the business, with Marco Moreschi’s son Mattia and daughter Gloria Moreschi, also working for the family-run company. “For us, what matters is not only continuing our family tradition; it is also essential to have reliable partners so we can offer our customers the best saw blades available,” explains Marco Moreschi, CEO of Moreschi Srl. “This is why we have been relying on the grinding machines from Biberach since 1991. We are currently using more than 15 VOLLMER and Loroch machines at our company.” VOLLMER precision – from small to large Moreschi mainly uses grinding machines from the CHD, CHF and CM model series. They allow for precise sharpening without the saw blades having to be clamped in more than one position. This makes it possible to machine a wide range of saw blades with different diameters and tooth geometries. What particularly impresses staff is how efficient and simple the machines are to use, as well as the reliability they offer. Eight CNC-controlled axes and measuring equipment make the CHD 270 from the Swabian sharpening specialist ideal for automatically machining carbide-tipped circular saw blades with an outer diameter of between 80 and 840mm. Thanks to a fixed grinding unit and its solid structure, the CM 300 grinding machine achieves outstanding precision for circular saw blades with a diameter between 200 and 1440mm. When it comes to extremely large dimensions, right up to circular saw blades with a diameter of 2200mm, Moreschi uses VOLLMER’s CHM and CHMF 400 grinding machines. These two models, with five CNC axes each, grind the tooth face and tooth top of the saw teeth, as well as their sides. Custom-made saw blades for a wide range of applications Moreschi’s international customer base includes numerous companies from the steel and metal alloy industry, meaning that the saw blades are used for saws produced by large manufacturers, as well as in saw mills. Since customer
requirements can differ greatly, Moreschi provides advice that is tailored to each individual customer with customproduced saw blades. The saw blades cut materials that require exemplary precision and the materials being cut include steel and metal alloys as well as wood, plastics and composite materials that all vary in their hardness and dimensions. To ensure a high standard of quality, Moreschi performs several trials before the final product reaches the customer. The company is also always working on further developing its products and technologies to find ideal solutions for its customers’ various application areas. Moreschi does this by exchanging knowledge and ideas with Italian universities. “Medium-sized manufacturers of saw blades, such as Moreschi, help their customers by providing consultation, production and maintenance services. For this, they require automated sharpening machines that offer high precision while being easy to use, even for small quantities,” states Dr Stefan Brand, CEO of the VOLLMER Group. “The fact that Moreschi puts its trust in VOLLMER makes us proud and we are hopeful that our sharpening machines from Biberach will continue to find their way to Vilminore di Scalve in the future.”

Tooling ITC Designs Route to Productivity for Signmaker The Design Shop in Barnstaple is an established commercial signage, print and interior design company that offers an exceptionally varied range of services and products. From its manufacturing facility in North Devon, the company can make everything from banners, feather flags, vehicle graphics, PoS & PoP displays, roller banners, exhibition stands, internal and external signage and much more with thanks to its in-house digital printing, CNC machining and laser cutting. With 10 staff, the 20 year old business has a client base that varies from small local start-ups to large national companies – all taking advantage of the turnkey service that can design, create and build inspiring environments whether it’s a bar, restaurant, classroom or office. For the last 15 years, the Barnstaple business has been relying on the expert support of Tamworth cutting tool manufacturers, Industrial Tooling Corporation (ITC). Commenting upon the application of ITC cutting tools, the Design Shop’s Adam Paull says: “For years, we have been using routing tools from ITC on a wide variety of applications and materials. We have used ITC’s 3, 4, 6 and 8mm diameter multi-purpose tools down the years, as they have always provided the best all round performance on materials from Foamex and Perspex through to aluminium, acrylic, Di-bond and just about anything else. However, as our company has evolved, so have our tooling requirements – and ITC has been there every step of the way.” Referring to the specific applications of ITC tools and the technical support, Adam continues: “We were previously using a 6mm diameter tool for machining 18mm thick plywood sheets (8 by 4 foot) and were using a standard routing tool. However, we were cutting ply sheets more frequently for bars, restaurants and exhibition displays and we needed to improve our machining performance. I called Sally at ITC for her technical support and she recommended ITC’s 2091 Series compression tool. We immediately went from almost 2m/min feed rate up to 10m/min – cutting sheets more than 5 times faster than before. Furthermore, the previous tool could only process five 8 by 4 foot sheets before burn-out. The new 2091 Series will process 15 sheets before we need a tool change. This gives us 3 times the tool life and 5 times the productivity. Additionally, the edge finishes are vastly improved and we no longer have to spend
10-15 minutes hand-finishing the edges of each sheet.” Service Beyond Tools Not only is ITC supplying industry leading tooling solutions to the Design Shop, the UK cutting tool experts are backing up the products with uncompromising service and technical support. As Adam continues: “Whenever we have a new material to cut; I am straight on the phone to ITC’s Sally Hunt for advice. She will always specify the right tool for the application. This technical support is invaluable.” This level of technical support is underpinned by the service the Design Shop receives from ITC. As Adam suggests: “On numerous occasions, I have called or emailed Sally at 5pm and we have received tools the next day. For a busy business like ours, this customer service and technical support is critical to our success.” This technical support was recently called upon when the signmaking experts had a number of projects that had to be machined from 3mm thick grey aluminium with poor machine-ability attributes. “We had a series of aluminium signs to produce for external shop and bar signs and we were finding our existing tools could cut the soft aluminium, but there were excessive burrs and the material was welding itself to the tools, generating poor tool life. I called Sally from ITC and she suggested the 180-2362-10K-STA with ITC’s new Iridis coating technology. The results were staggering.” The proprietary coating technology prevents chips from welding to the cutting tool, even when undertaking dry machining where excessive heat can be generated. For the Design Shop, this has improved tool life by more than 50%. However, the key feature is the surface finishes, as Adam concludes: “With the heat generation from the previous tool, we were witnessing excessive burrs on the edges of the parts and this resulted in considerable secondary hand finishing. The new tool can run at higher feeds and speeds to improve productivity and the coating technology dissipates the heat and prevents burrs from building-up and the waste material from welding to the tool and impacting tool life. We couldn’t be happier with the cutting tools we get from ITC, but more important to us is the service and technical expertise that supports us as we drive the business forward.”

Handling Massive Time Savings And Improved Efficiency With Combilift At RH Wilson RH Wilson (Lakes) Ltd, situated as the name suggests in the Lake District, is an independent privately owned timber importing company, run by joint owners Ann and Rodney Dalton. When they took over the business in 2013, one of Rodney’s priorities was to improve the efficiency of storage, handling and stock location procedures. Thanks to a combination of Combilift multidirectional forklifts and racking in the 40,000ft² warehousing areas, some startling results have been achieved.
mean more problems in my experience - and our local service engineer finds the truck straightforward to maintain. The racking and the Combilift were not the cheapest options on the market, but as I have found out over many years it can cost money trying to save it, so we are extremely happy with the way this has worked out. So much so that we are looking at another Combilift when we embark on the next phase of our planned expansion.”
The company specialises in grading timber for specific end use, whether it be redwood and hardwood for joineries making doors and windows, or whitewood for pallet and packaging manufacturers. It delivers its wide range of products “from Guernsey to Glasgow” from its base in Kirkby Stephen and also offers bespoke sawing, x-cutting, grading, planing and moulding facilities. Packs of products were previously block stacked and moved around with 2-directional sideloaders or counterbalance trucks. “We did a detailed study of how long it was taking us to retrieve a specific pack and were alarmed at the figures,” said Rodney. “We were spending a substantial amount of time a day moving packs around and needed at least two employees to do this so it really added up in terms of hours and manpower. My first thought was out with free stacking, in with as much racking as possible and then find a manoeuvrable forklift capable of working in tight spaces.” Following advice from Steve Tomlinson of Combilift and racking specialists, the new system was installed in October 2018. “The time saving has been enormous,” said Rodney. “We are down to five minutes per pack - or four minutes 23 seconds to be precise! - which makes a huge difference when dealing with the four to seven artics a day that we typically load or unload. Quick stock location enables us to adhere to just in time delivery schedules. A knock-on bonus is that we now only need 30 minutes for the monthly stocktake compared to around two and a half hours previously.” The new racking enabled three extra working aisles to be created, with widths of 2,370mm - down from over 3,000mm needed with the old system - and going to a height of 5.5m also created more vertical storage. 300 packs of timber with lengths ranging from just over 2m to almost 6m can now be accommodated. The 4t capacity of newest of the two Combilifts on site, a C4000 diesel powered model, copes easily when the heaviest 3.5t loads need to be lifted to the top bays. It is fitted with guide rollers for guided aisle operation, making it quick and easy for drivers to access and travel down the aisles. This system also enhances safety procedures as well as reducing the risk of product damage. Rodney was familiar with the Combilift brand as he had a C3000 model at a previous business and was impressed with its reliability as well as the engineering, quality and the general ethos of the Irish manufacturer: “I like the relative simplicity of Combilift’s products - more high tech can just

Dust Extraction 21st Century Upgrade For Historic Manufacturer Dust Control Systems (DCS), now part of Absolent Group, have completed a major upgrade of the dust extraction system at the premises of one of the UK’s premier kitchen furniture manufacturers – a company steeped in manufacturing heritage. Coventry-based manufacturer, Burbidge & Son Ltd, has been involved with the production of wooden kitchen furniture since the early 1970s, but the company’s history in woodworking manufacture dates back over 150 years, and five generations of the Burbidge family. It all began with Henry Burbidge, back in 1867, primarily manufacturing turned wooden products for a variety of diverse industries; bobbins for local textile companies, bannisters and newel posts for the building trade, and sports goods such as cricket stumps and croquet mallets for a customer list that included Slazenger. Over the decades to follow, the company developed strong connections with the region’s motor vehicle industry; manufacturing components for the likes of Morris and MG, as well as a brief period of manufacturing plywood components for the Black & Decker Workmate. Other strings to the company’s manufacturing bow have included goods for the musical instrument market, with items such as recorders and drum sticks, and even more offbeat with the production of stiletto heels, wooden handles for electric kettles, and even solid wood toilet seats for Harrods. By the 1990s however, Burbidge had grown to be one of the UK’s leading kitchen furniture manufacturers and now, almost 30 years later, the company is still drawing on its rich woodworking heritage, still family-owned, and headed by Ben Burbidge; Henry’s great, great grandson. With previous first-hand knowledge and experience of the capabilities DCS had in the design and installation of dust extraction systems for the woodworking industry, and especially in the kitchen furniture manufacturing sector, Burbidge’s Operations Director, Mike Procter, had no hesitation in contacting them to evaluate the company’s requirements and to explore possible options for bringing the system up to date. “We had decided the time was right to review the whole extraction system with a view to improving its overall efficiency, as well as ensuring optimum safety standards were being achieved, and I was also keen to explore the possibility of including Ecogate® technology at Burbidge to, hopefully, make some cost savings,” says Mike. “Over the years, the company’s expanding collection of woodworking machinery has inevitably led to the situation where we had multiple fans and filter units, serving all areas of the factory, and all working at full power, all day, every day.”

Four out of six extraction fans and two of the three filter units remain to provide an air volume capacity in excess of 85,000m3 per hour. A site visit by Sales Director, Andy Hives, to review and appraise the existing extraction system confirmed that, although the system’s capacity was fully meeting all statutory health and safety criteria, there was considerable scope to improve efficiency and the potential to realise significant cost savings as well. Fume extraction from the company’s Cefla paint line was still required on an almost continuous basis but, in common with most furniture manufacturers, the Ecogate® energy survey carried out at Burbidge revealed that only a small number of the dustproducing woodworking machines in the factory were ever in operation at the same time, and so dust extraction was only required on a partial basis. “Excluding the paint line,” Andy Hives explained, “the survey showed that the maximum extraction volume

required, at any given point in time, was only two thirds of the volume currently being extracted to the three externally-sited filter units. Effectively, one of the three filter units was surplus to requirement, and could be removed altogether.” DCS decommissioned the redundant filter unit and reconfigured the extraction system; instantly reducing power consumption by 120,000 kilowatt hours per year by the removal of two 37kW fans. Although some existing ductwork was retained, new FastClip ductwork was installed throughout the factory, and automatic Ecogate motorised dampers were installed to serve each machine. In addition, extraction was provided at a further six ‘push-to-run’ machine clean-up points. Ecogate greenBOX® units constantly monitor and control the motorised dampers; opening the dampers to enable extraction whenever machines come online, and closing them again as a machine shuts down. The greenBOX units also control the Ecogate PowerMASTER Variable Speed Drive units (VSDs), which in turn control the extraction fan speeds. An Ecogate® system exploits the laws of physics, and a relatively small reduction in fan speed can generate disproportionately larger reductions in power consumption. At Burbidge, the new extraction system is capable of removing just over 85,000m3 of dust-laden air every hour, which is over 30,000m3 per hour less than the previous system, and it’s this reduction in volume that translates into reduced energy use and cost savings. The predicted savings to be made by installing Ecogate® technology on the reconfigured system add up to a further 122,000 kilowatt hours per year; giving a total saving of over 242,000 kilowatt hours in the first year following installation, which represents a 55% reduction in total annual power consumption. Installing the Ecogate® technology has delivered more benefits than simply reducing the company’s electricity bills, confirms Burbidge’s Production Manager, Tim Foreman:
“The Ecogate® system and extraction installation work has made a significant difference to the factory environment; there’s much less air being removed from the building now, and we also have warm, filtered air returned to the factory, so it’s much easier to keep the place warm and, with fewer fans in operation it’s also much quieter.”
A new 5.5kW bag filter unit, installed to serve the accessory manufacturing area, provides extraction for a variety of small machine tools which have been fitted with extraction hoods manufactured by Gallito Ltd. In conclusion, Mike Procter added: “Our spend on electricity has reduced, and the new ductwork has smartened up the appearance of the factory, but I was also very impressed with how DCS managed the project; they stuck to the agreed plan, which was detailed on a chart showing the work schedule for each day, and ensured the least possible disruption to our production.” T: 0800 040 7116 www.DCSlimited.co.uk

Woodwaste A Saving of £600 - £800 A Month “I can’t understand why all wood-waste generating businesses don’t have one…” The Cheshire Kitchen Company has purchased a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating. Matthew Smith, Director at The Cheshire Kitchen Company had heard good things about wood waste heaters, so started to undertake some research. He soon realised that, by investing in a wood waste heater, he could burn all the wood offcuts generated from the joinery workshop, plus all the packaging and cardboard waste, so he would no longer need to hire a skip each week, saving the business between £600-£800 a month. Plus, the business would save money on heating, as the 5000 sq foot workshop had to be heated by electric heaters in the cold winter months. Matthew says: “Once we started to crunch some numbers, we realised it just made sense. The combined cost of heating and waste disposal could cost the business almost £2000 some months, and we realised that this expense could just disappear if we invested in a wood waste heater, so we found and contacted Wood Waste Technology to organise a site survey and quote…” After reviewing costs and performance, the business purchased a WT10 heater, giving enough spare capacity should a decision be made to extend the business premises
at some point in the future. The heater was installed into The Cheshire Kitchen Company’s manufacturing unit by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers. Matthew says: “Having now experienced life with a wood waste heater, I can’t understand why all wood waste generating businesses don’t have one. The heater makes the workshop lovely and warm, The WT10 heater installed at The so we’ve gone from Cheshire Kitchen Company working in multiple layers to being able to work comfortably in t-shirts even during the coldest months, plus we’re saving a huge amount of money by reducing our waste disposal and heating bills. “There aren’t many things you buy that deliver everything that the salespeople promised, but our wood waste heater certainly has! The whole process has been hassle-free, from getting a quote to the installation and delivery. We would highly recommend the products and team at Wood Waste Technology!”. Kurt Cockroft says: “Whatever the primary reason for purchase – heat or waste disposal, a wood waste heater is a cost effective and productive solution for companies that generate waste wood, and some companies get payback on the investment in less than 12 months.” Wood Waste Technology’s years of expertise in wood waste solutions have helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters, available in various size and specifications to suit all business applications.
