Case Study KWB London Reaches New Heights With HOMAG UK KWB London specialises in bespoke kitchens, bedrooms, bathrooms and concierge fit-outs for the London contract residential market. Founded in 2012 by joiner Kevin Behan, KWB’s focus on quality and service has given rise to rapid expansion. Since 2015, the company has been working exclusively with the large tier 1 contractors in London. “We’ve been lucky to be invited to do some prestigious work, perhaps the most notable being Chelsea Waterfront which is our latest project,” explains KWB’s owner, Kevin Behan. He continues, “The gap in the market we fill is producing very bespoke joinery detailing in volume, something the larger outfits struggle to achieve. “As our business began to take off, we realised we had to invest in better, larger CNC machinery. So, in 2016, we visited the Ligna show to research the market. That was a real eye-opener for us, and we were particularly impressed with the breadth and depth of the HOMAG presentation.” Swayed by price “Despite feeling that HOMAG’s solutions were technically superior, we made the mistake of being lured by a lowerpriced alternative. Unfortunately, we very quickly learnt the error of our ways. The cheaper machine ended up costing us dearly, as we suffered all sorts of issues and downtime which held back our progress. “It was during the first lockdown period in 2020 that it became clear the time was right to make the next major investment in the business. Throughout the COVID crisis we kept operating, but many of our suppliers didn’t, and this exposed weaknesses in our supply chain. “Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but we weren’t about to
The SAWTEQ B-130 - A tenfold increase in capacity for CPA Bespoke Joinery
6
www.p-j-production.com
make the same mistake again. So when it came to investing in new machinery and software to take us to the next level, we turned to the major players. Yet again, HOMAG came out on top and so we decided to partner with them.” Specifying the right equipment “Before approaching HOMAG we analysed our production processes. We highlighted the machinery we felt we needed to create a workshop that would not only produce the right volume and quality for our customers, but also enable us to grow the business. “Our plant wish-list included a beam saw with an automated panel lifter, an edge bander, a vertical CNC drill and a carcass press. Working closely with the HOMAG team we finalised our order for a SAWTEQ B-130 with panel lifter, an EDGETEQ S-300, a DRILLTEQ V-200 and a CABTEQ S-250. “It’s very disruptive, changing your whole 10,500 sq. ft. workshop with new equipment, but HOMAG’s installation organisation and planning was excellent. From the moment we placed the order for the kit, they kept us informed of the delivery time frame. True to their word, their engineers installed all the machinery at the end of September, and I must say, they did an amazing job. “The engineers weren’t precious, they just cracked on with installing the new machines. This enabled us to get on with our day-to-day production with minimal disruption; it really was a seamless process. “Within a week all the machines were commissioned, and the engineers then trained our guys on site. This was supported by online training via Teams prior to the installation. HOMAG will also be providing refresher courses and advanced training online as and when we need it.”
Case Study Service and spares “Aside from the quality and performance of the HOMAG machinery and easy to use woodWOP software, another deciding factor in partnering with them was the level of service and support they offer. “HOMAG has its own team of engineers in the UK and consequently is able to provide an exceptional level of service. Not only that, but our research showed they also hold a comprehensive stock of spare parts. So, in the unusual event of a machine issue, they will be able to get us back up and running very quickly, and that is vitally important to us. “Obviously, with five machines and software, this was a significant investment for a £5.5 million business like ours, but again, HOMAG was able to help. They introduced us to HOMAG Finance, who made it very easy for us putting together an attractive investment package.” The results speak for themselves “The new equipment has revolutionised our production; we are seeing efficiency gains 30 per cent higher than before, particularly with the automated SAWTEQ B-130 beam saw and the EDGETEQ S-300 edge bander. For example, on the new edge bander we can change between tape thicknesses, widths and diameter of radii without having to stop the machine; it’s all done at the touch of a button. “There are hidden benefits too; when we invite potential customers to our facility the image the HOMAG equipment creates is hugely beneficial. It gives clients confidence that we can achieve the results they want and so it is definitely helping us to clinch contracts.
CABTEQ S-250 case clamp
“Our employees too have gained in stature; they see they are in a truly professional environment and consequently have gained a deeper sense of pride in their work,” concludes Kevin Behan. If you’d like a demonstration or more information on any of HOMAG’s machines or software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

Feature East/West Gradients Levelled The joinery Nyfeler Holzwaren AG, manufacturer of the CUBORO marble run system and other products, now stores beech log planks and other items in an OHRA cantilever racking system instead of on the floor. The unequal floor level on each long side of the double-sided rack, as well as a variety of different load carriers and confined space conditions posed particular challenges for planning. OHRA solved them with a special construction that divides the rack between an east and a west side. Despite differing floor heights and an offset layout, both sides are protected by a single, six-metre deep roof. With the new rack, Nyfeler gains significantly greater storage area, saves time loading on and off, and reduces damage to materials thanks to the protection from direct weather factors. Before: Stacked outdoors Until now, Nyfeler stored beech log planks, which the company uses to produce the CUBORO marble run system, stacked in the open air, alongside firewood and other items. The Euro-pallets used for this purpose were continually affected by the weather, resulting in dangerous block stacks. Moreover, the items had to be laboriously unstacked to reach the materials. Nyfeler used to cover each stack with tarpaulins to protect them from the weather, which required extra effort when handling. Lastly, the store required an excessively large surface area.
Difficult spaces For these reasons, Nyfeler decided to significantly increase the efficiency of its store with a cantilever rack by OHRA. The space allotted for this purpose, however, required a tailormade construction: due to the terrain, the foundation on one side of the double-sided rack lay 1.5 metres above the other side. Moreover, it was important not to hinder lorries from manoeuvring on the small premises. Finally, space had to be found for widely differing types of goods: timber stacks up to 4.4 metres high and 5.5 metres long, as well as barrels, sacks and other items. A rack with two sides OHRA designers overcame the challenges by dividing the rack: on the higher ground to the west, the uprights are 6,770 millimetres high. Attached to it are 1.5-metre-long cantilever arms with a carrying capacity of 1000 kilograms. They contain four storage levels including the feet. On the east, the uprights are 8,270 millimetres high to level out the difference in floor height. The base on this side is filled with stacks of beech log planks with a weight of up to 10 tonnes. The storage level above it provides space for further stack of planks of up to 2,300 kilograms. The east and west sides are, moreover, arranged in an offset manner lengthwise: the east side starts a few metres “later” so that the foot of the rack at the corner of the construction does not protrude into the driveway and lorries can circumnavigate the rack in a tight radius.

Feature All storage levels of the rack are fitted with metal gratings to allow all manner of goods to be stored, regardless of type of load carrier or loading aids. The metal gratings also provide good ventilation of the items stored and a clear view when loading on and off. Three-metre-long roof arms are mounted at the top ends of the uprights at an inclination of 11 degrees. The generously dimensioned roof protects the stored goods from the weather. Wind and snow loads on such a large roof area have, of course, been considered in the static calculation of the rack. Capacity doubled, time saved The new racking system brings Nyfeler a whole range of benefits, as managing director Remo Nyfeler stresses: “We can now store double the amount on the same ground area. We also save a great deal of time with shorter drive distances and because stored goods no longer need to be covered by cumbersome tarpaulins.” Despite its size, the rack blends in elegantly with the surroundings. Finally, the whole store operates in a clean and orderly way, leaving customers with a positive impression.

Case Study Beaded Cabinet-Face-Frames The heart of a home is ‘’The Kitchen “, and a cabinet with a beaded face frame immediately conveys a high level of quality and craftsmanship and distinctly sets it apart from other utilitarian overlay-door cabinets. The most common way to manufacture beaded face frames, is to use square profiles and to apply the bead profile separately. The major disadvantage to this system is the time required to produce a complete frame. Apart from time consumption, mismatched grain and mitre joints, due to inconsistent bead profiles can be a concern. Any of these faults are only highlighted by being painted. A dissatisfied customer or a call-out, will damage not only the cabinetmakers reputation but also the bottom line. Clearly, the most efficient way to produce beaded face frames is to start with pre-beaded profiles. All of the above-mentioned disadvantages are then eliminated from the start. Several systems have been devised, but their set-up and calibration are a time-consuming process and their cost (over €18K plus tooling) places them out of the reach of most bespoke cabinetmakers. The Solution The Hoffmann Beaded Face Frame System offers cabinetmakers of all sizes a fast, precise and efficient method to manufacture beaded face frames, whether it is in single or series production. Starting with pre-beaded
profiles, stiles are notched in pairs and the rails are coped on a fixed blade, Morso guillotine style notching machine. These NF series machines are manufactured for Hoffmann by Dan-List (Morso) in Denmark. They cut all kinds of wood, plastic, MDF and plywood and leave the cut surface of the profile perfectly smooth and accurate, requiring no further preparation before joining. For a standard, stile to rail connection, this operation takes about 5 seconds with our manual foot-operated notching machine (the automatic model is even faster). The second step takes place on the Hoffmann MU-3 dovetail routing machine equipped with special fixtures for beaded and notched material. Dovetail keyways are routed into all mating parts and the frames are assembled by applying some glue and inserting Hoffmann Dovetail Keys. These Keys draw the parts together to form a tight, secure and permanent joint. No large clamping tables or bar clamps are required and the frames can be finished immediately upon assembly. All dovetail routing machines are set-up with a complete fixture set to process stiles and rails, but can also be used to process regular mitre joints and butt joints. They are also available in Digital and Pneumatic models which increase accuracy and speed.

Case Study Custom Cabinetry And Millwork Specialist Wins Jobs With Software’s Graphics And Automation Tools Jeremiah Halla needed to quickly become productive when he opened the doors of his custom cabinetry and millwork company, Elegant Wood Creations. Making the leap to entrepreneurship was daunting, but he hit the ground running by investing in the machinery and software necessary to ensure he would be in full production by the time his first customer walked through the door. “I got CABINET VISION a few months before opening the business and now I can’t even imagine doing everything that we do here by hand,” he says. “It just wouldn’t work without the software; I feel like you’re much more accurate with a CNC machine.” Located in Turlock, California, Elegant Wood Creations produces a range of custom cabinetry and millwork, including kitchens, entertainment centres, vanities, closets, home offices, bookcases, mantels, and floating shelves, and meets a diverse array of one-of-a-kind demands. Jeremiah Halla uses CABINET VISION’s Screen-to-Machine (S2M) Center to perform all the company’s design work, manage job details, and generate NC code that is sent to
12
www.p-j-production.com
CNC machinery on the shop floor. The software – part of Hexagon’s Smart Manufacturing portfolio – has helped the small company win jobs and produce a large volume of products, with just two employees. He uses CABINET VISION’s realistic rendering capabilities to help customers understand and visualise design details. “I’ve had people tell me they went with my company because I was able to show them a 3D picture,” he says. “There are businesses that come to potential customers with drawings on graph paper, and that isn’t a strong selling point. Most people want to see something to help them visualise — and I’ve had people think that CABINET VISION renderings are actual photographs.” The solution’s graphics capabilities are an advantage when working with contractors, as well. “Sometimes contractors want me to render projects to help sell a job. I can take plan views and elevation views and give them to a contractor to lay out all their plumbing and electrical work. With CABINET VISION, what you see is what you get, and contractors love that.”
Case Study
In addition to its strong visual capabilities, CABINET VISION simplifies the process of making design changes, as the software automatically resizes all affected parts when adjustments to size are made. “Unlike doing everything by hand, if I want to change the width of a cabinet, the system will do it for me. I don’t have to go in by hand and calculate changes to all of the parts, so it takes out a lot of the margin for human error.” Before sending projects to the shop floor, Jeremih Halla takes advantage of CABINET VISION’s powerful nesting engine to boost efficiency and maximise material yield. “I only have little pieces of scrap wood now, whereas before the CNC machine and CABINET VISION, there was a lot more,” he said. “It’s awesome.”
“The elevation view is great to send out to the guys on the shop floor. If there are variations in the CAD part, I can simply type notes into it. It makes it a lot easier to communicate important job details, which helps us avoid making mistakes.” CABINET VISION and CNC machinery ensure that shop time at Elegant Wood Creations is optimised, as time that would otherwise be devoted to cutting projects by hand can be devoted to other tasks. “The guys can be doing something else while the router is cutting a sheet, so it’s really like having another employee or even two,” concludes Jeremiah Halla. “This is a small shop, but investing in the machinery and CABINET VISION was still less than I would pay a monthly employee.”
While he typically nests the parts automatically, the software allows him to edit automatically-generated nests if needed. This combined programming flexibility and power enables him to automate as many tasks as possible while retaining control over the entire production process. “CABINET VISION drills our holes, cuts our dadoes, and, if we have a special hole or other special feature, it will take care of that for us, too” he says. “It’s nice to be able to draw something and have it cut exactly the way I drew it. I draw it and the guys cut it, paint it, and send it out. It makes everything a lot easier.” Cut lists, material lists and assembly sheets are generated with information derived from project designs. In addition to reducing error, these detailed lists and instructions helps everyone to understand jobs at a glance.

Feature Combilift’s 60,000th Truck Delivered The Irish manufacturer Combilift recently marked a further milestone when its 60,000th unit came off the production lines at the company HQ in Monaghan and was shipped to the other side of the world. The customer taking delivery of this special forklift is Metroll, a leading Australian manufacturer and supplier of steel building products including roofing, cladding, rainwater, structural and fencing. Metroll has branches across the country, and the new Combi-CB3000 will be a further addition to its fleet of 13 Combilifts that are operating throughout the Metroll Group, with another 10 already on order. These range from 3t multidirectional units to a highly customised 10t model. Combilift number 60,000 will be working at the site in Toowoomba and has been fitted with features such as 4.9m triplex mast with a 3050mm spreader to safely and easily manage the long loads that are typically handled by Metroll. According to Metroll Operations Manager Vic Josephs “Like most businesses we are very busy and we’re also growing at a significant rate, so space has become a premium resource. With this unit we can utilise our space more efficiently whilst at the same time operating safely. Safety is of paramount importance. This forklift allows our machinery to get into tighter spaces and for us to space our racks more closely together to maximise factory floor space.”
Chris Littlewood, Country Manager of Combilift Australia said: “The Combi-CB 3t model is the most popular unit in the Australian market and accounted for 50% of the machines we sold in the year ending March 2021. So we are particularly pleased that it is one of our customers in this country that has been able to receive this landmark machine.”
Combilift CEO and Co-Founder Martin McVicar commented: “This is a great achievement for Combilift, particularly as almost every truck we manufacture is a one-off, designed for specific and individual requirements. There are very few other companies, if any, that can offer this level of customisation whilst manufacturing in such volume. The first half of this year has been by far the best in our 23 year history for the number of orders we have received – not just for Combi-CB models but across our complete product range.” Following the successful collaboration with Metroll in Australia, Combilift now also supplies its trucks to the company’s Californian based operations too. “We have often found that a recommendation from one country leads to sites elsewhere adopting the same material handling processes with our products,” said Martin McVicar. “So we’d like to congratulate Metroll on taking delivery of our 60,000th truck, and thank them for their continued support over the years.” Link to video: https://youtu.be/eEuIGnhl_4U

Feature Regenerating Business Growth With An AXYZ CNC Router From AAG In the wake of the near-catastrophic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses generally will be looking for ways to reduce costs whilst maintaining quality and customer support. For the industrial woodworking, furniture production, panel processing and joinery industries investment in a CNC router represents a versatile and cost-effective solution to achieving these objectives. Based on a price-to-performance ratio, a CNC router remains one of the most powerful and financially compelling capital equipment investments currently available. A global pioneering force in the advancement of CNC routing, cutting and engraving technology, AAG has for the past 30 years supplied some of the most technically advanced machines, many of which have attained virtual benchmark status. They are available from AAG’s stateof-the-art assembly and distribution centre in Telford, Shropshire and supported with comprehensive performance warranties and bespoke product training courses carried out at a customer’s own premises or at the AAG facility if preferred. AAG’s pre-eminence in the CNC routing/cutting systems supply chain is largely attributable to the long-standing and robust business partnerships forged with its customers, many of which have used AAG continuously as the primary source of CNC machinery based on build quality, reliability and the raft of additional production-enhancing machine upgrades and wide-ranging customer support facilities available. Collectively, these are at the heart of everything AAG and its primary AXYZ power brand represents. The latest AXYZ Infinite multi-purpose large-format and the smaller-format Innovator CNC routing/cutting systems
typically embody all of these attributes, whilst providing complementary but distinctive price-to-performance capabilities. They are available in two different sizes and price points to accommodate every conceivable CNC machining requirement and variable capital equipment investment allocations. Apart from providing a staggering 366,918 different machine configurations, AXYZ routers can be supplied with a raft of both standard and optional machine enhancements. These include the AXYZ ATC (Automatic Tool Change) system for work requiring multiple tools and the AXYZ Auto Zone Management facility that ensures the material being processed is held securely during the routing/ cutting process to enable optimum accuracy and a superior routed/cut finish. These are supplemented with the latest AXYZ A2MC machine control system that radically reduces ‘bounce’ and vibration caused by sudden machine acceleration/deceleration frequently encountered with less technically advanced control systems and the AXYZ AVS (AXYZ Vision System) camera-based facility for precise material alignment and routing/cutting accuracy. Completing the range of production-enhancing upgrades is the latest AXYZ helical rack and pinion drive system. This incorporates a multiple gear teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, leading to faster material feed rates, quieter machine operation, less material wastage and ultimately a longer than normal machine life. All machines supplied by AAG are supported with ongoing technical support and a comprehensive range of essential spare parts, accessories and consumables via AAG’s 24/7 CNCShop Division. Case Study New OVVO V-1230 Range Delivers Significant Savings On Assembly Time For Whittle Interiors The new range of OVVO V-1230 Connectors that are suitable for nesting and drilling promise to “make furniture assembly simple”. OVVO products are a range of cleverly engineered, award-winning connectors that make joining wood simple. The connectors are installed during the manufacturing process so the enduser can click together furniture, without the need for tools, screws or glue, and save significant amounts of assembly time as a result. The new OVVO V-1230 connectors for Nesting and Drilling retain the patented, innovative dovetail design that featured in the Interzum 2019 “Best of the Best” award-winning V-0930 connector that delivers increased intrinsic tolerance, enhancing the shear and tensile strength of the joint created. Whittle Interiors, based in Christchurch, U.K., is a joinery and fit-out company with a heritage of manufacturing highend interior joinery. With over 50 years’ experience in the industry, their team of dedicated craftsmen have created beautiful bespoke joinery projects for some of the most luxurious brands in the commercial fit-out, hospitality and leisure sectors. Whittle pride themselves on combining traditional craftsmanship with the latest technological advances, and have been using the OVVO Connector range for some time to construct joinery items that require invisible fixing, and also to deliver a quicker way to assemble joinery items, as there is no need for screws, glue or clamps. Outlining the benefits that using OVVO has delivered for Whittle, Ricky Bumstead, Joinery Foreman, said

“OVVO for Drilling is our most used in the range, as they are easy to machine and easy to assemble in the Joiners’ shop, and give a strong fixing which is not visible. We have used the new OVVO for Nesting which are great for a larger production line of units, where machining and assembly needs to be as quick as possible. Units can be nested on our CNC machines, ready to be edged on our Edgebander, and then ready for assembly cutting processes in the machine shop down to two operations instead of three and saving significant time as a result. It also works very well with our Alphacam CNC Software, which reduces programming time. The wide range of different connectors available suit many

different applications within our joinery, and in addition to this, we have a good relationship with the team at OVVO and find their connectors very cost effective.” He continues “We have used OVVO connectors on several very high profile installations recently, including the recent refurbishment of the Hilton at Heathrow Terminal 4, where we worked with Kilker Projects and Elements Real Estate, and were appointed to deliver the extensive specialist joinery package that features throughout the hospitality scheme designed by Hirsch Bedner Associates (HBA). Using OVVO connectors on the free-standing joinery items in the scheme delivered significant efficiencies for us, not only during production in the joinery, but also during assembly and fit-out on-site.” OVVO continue to develop their range of invisible furniture connectors with the clear vision of “making furniture assembly simple” and bringing the benefits of this to manufacturers across the industry. The new V-1230 range for nesting and drilling are easily integrated into manufacturer’s existing processes, and are supported by all leading CNC software providers.

Case Study The Luxury Of HI-MACS® Evergreen Floods The New Banema Concept Store As if diving deep into the depths of the sea, Banema’s new showroom and commercial space in Lisbon opens its doors with a truly creative and inspiring design idea. The HI-MACS® Evergreen colour provides the establishment with an enveloping atmosphere where natural wooden furniture comes together with industrial-style decoration and inspirational designer goods.
A serpentine module as the focal point of the space
Banema Studio, designed as a space that unites excellence in design, has opened in the Campo de Ourique neighbourhood of Lisbon. With a welcoming ambience, it presents itself through objects that link the balance of the forms with the fineness of the materials. In this new concept store from the company Banema, the HI-MACS® distributor in Portugal, all the pieces and furnishings that compose it are profoundly beautiful, able to transform spaces and evoke unique sensations.
The sides of the module make use of the entire length of the shop, allowing an optimal organisation and arrangement of large displays.
The architecture studio Campos Costa Arquitetos was responsible for designing the striking furniture module made from HI-MACS®. ‘The aim was to create a space with rhythm that’s full of life, and above all where the feeling of comfort extends into several different and more intimate environments,’ explains the head architect Pedro Campos Costa. The establishment is in the retail sector and was initially designed to combine the concept of a materials showroom with a designer shop. The result is thus a unique space offering a wide range of activities and materials, as well as products, from different companies and with different characteristics. www.himacs.eu/newsroom Photo credits: Francisco Nogueira ©
24
www.p-j-production.com
All the areas in the establishment are organised around a module in the Evergreen shade of HI-MACS® acrylic stone, whose lines and curved motifs slide along the entire length of the premises. This striking layout provides several areas that are clearly differentiated from one another and that can be used as meeting spaces or mini showrooms.
The large circular entrances are combined with furnishings designed with linear motifs, emulating the image of a large grid. It is all finished in an intense petrol blue colour and achieves the curvaceous ambiance thanks to the excellent thermoformable properties of HI-MACS®. This acrylic stone excels over other materials due to its thermoplastic capabilities that enable it to be moulded into any shape without compromising the richness of the selected colour. Evergreen, the colour used in this project, belongs to the Solid range, part of the HI-MACS® Velvet Colours collection. The other colours in this range are inspired by the beauty of nature, and their pigment quality results in deep tones capable of imbuing any project with strength and personality. In addition to the aesthetic and thermoformable characteristics of HI-MACS®, this acrylic stone is ideal for decoration and interior design in the retail sector, as its nonporous, seamless surface prevents the build-up of dirt and bacteria. The uniform nature of the material also makes it easy to clean and maintain, thus making it aesthetically and functionally resistant over long periods.

Feature Extractly How It Used To Be! As we reported on our website back in early June, dust extraction specialists Extractly Ltd are now operating from premises on Shaw Cross Business Park in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire. The office, workshop and warehousing space, which until 2019 was occupied by Dust Control Systems Ltd (DCS), presents this ambitious company with the ideal base and opportunity for growth in the dust and woodwaste extraction business. Situated between Leeds and Huddersfield on the M62 corridor, and within 3 miles of the M1, the company’s location offers easy access to customers’ sites across the length and breadth of the UK, and is the perfect base for storage and distribution of extraction-related products ordered via their online shop. For Extractly’s directors and key management personnel, the move to this building is also something of a homecoming, as they all worked from this building whilst employed by DCS. Between them, the team bring some 90 years’ extraction industry experience to the table; with many of those years spent working alongside each other for DCS group companies. To satisfy demand from both professional extraction engineers and self-installers, Extractly Ltd was initially established in 2019, by sales director Jake Oldfield, as an online provider of specialist equipment and parts for all aspects of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV). Jake is now joined on the board by former colleagues William Kenyon, as Technical Director, and Graham Day, who takes on the role of Operations Director. “DCS was always very much a family affair”, says Jake Oldfield, son and nephew respectively to former DCS directors Chris and Philip Oldfield, “and employees were always made to feel like they belonged to the DCS family.” Extractly seem to be set on continuing the tradition in a similar vein: fellow director William Kenyon’s father, Mark Kenyon, was also a director at DCS, and when Graham Day joined DCS in 1996 he was originally
apprenticed to his uncles, Bob Day and Peter Day, and later went on to spend a further 20 years at DCS working alongside his cousin, Shane Day. Prior to the company’s acquisition in 2019, Graham’s remit as Installation Manager for DCS included management of multiple teams of installation engineers for DCS, Ecogate, Cades and Gallito; ensuring safe working practices were adhered to on-site, dealing with all aspects of cranage and access equipment requirements, as well as having responsibility for training and certification. “After more than 20 years with DCS, I must admit the prospect of working for a much larger organisation was a little unnerving, and I thought it might be out of my comfort zone, but my initial fears were unfounded and, in the first year with Filtermist, I was very gratified to receive recognition from colleagues as runner-up in the ‘Peoples’ Choice Award’ and to be presented with the company’s ‘Positive Approach Award’. Although Extractly’s not quite in the same league yet, the role I undertake here is very similar to my previous experience with DCS”, says Graham, “and we all believe there’s a bright future ahead of us.” William (Will) Kenyon’s career at DCS began in 2002. Initially employed as a service engineer, Will went on to establish himself as the company’s electronics guru and, as well as installing and maintaining electrical control gear at customers’ premises, he managed the setup and operation of the company’s control panel and instrumentation business. Will has also been instrumental in the successful integration of Ecogate® energy-saving systems into many of the UK’s leading woodworking facilities, and his capability in this technology has enabled Extractly Ltd to secure ‘Approved Ecogate® Installer’ status. “It’s actually quite emotional walking back in here!” Will admits; spotting his own handwritten directives on the workshop wall. Having put so much of me into this place over the years, it’s a really good feeling to know it’s also going to play a big part in my future once again.” A significant volume of the sales derived from Extractly’s online shop are for Nordfab’s QF® ductwork components. “We’ve developed a great working relationship with Nordfab”, says Jake Oldfield, and Extractly has been rewarded by being appointed as the official ‘Authorised Nordfab Dealer’ for Quick-Fit® ducting equipment in the north of England. “As one of the UK’s leading suppliers we’re able to offer our customers highly competitive prices on Nordfab® products”, Jake added “and we’re able to provide Quick-Fit ductwork from stock, in a wide selection of diameters and lengths, as well as a range of popular QF ducting components.”

The senior management team also includes former DCS colleagues: Tom Firth takes up the position of Contracts Manager; Kieran Redmond is Projects Manager; and Jordan Rickett is Extractly’s Service Manager. Tom Firth had worked alongside Jake at Cades and, when he discovered Extractly were in the market for a contracts engineer, he jumped at the opportunity to renew the working relationship. “When
Feature Jake first set up Extractly I asked him to let me know if he ever needed a contracts engineer… but I didn’t think we’d be working together again so soon!” In his role as Contracts Manager, Tom oversees extraction system installations from receipt of order through to completion. “I generally discuss project goals with the customer,” Tom explains, “survey the site, create system designs using AutoCAD, ensure all orders for parts are placed, and schedule the work to meet the customer’s needs.” In 2007, Tom started working for Cades Ltd as a contracts engineer and, when the company was acquired by DCS in 2015, he continued to work on Cades’ accounts. In the following year his commitment was acknowledged with a promotion to Contracts Manager. “It was definitely a strange feeling walking back into the old building again”, Tom commented, “but I’ve got good memories from my time here with Cades and DCS. I’m sure we can recreate that again and I would like to think I have a long future ahead of me with Extractly; I see the move to these premises as a statement of intent about where we want to be as a company in the future and, with the industry experience and knowledge we have between us, we can be a real force going forward.” As Projects Manager for Extractly, Kieran Redmond also makes a return to the fold after a brief spell as a technical estimator in the health sector. Having only joined DCS in 2015, Kieran is, relatively speaking, still the newbie of the group, but he’s just as keen as everyone else to be part of a growing team: “Extractly was expanding rapidly, and there was an obvious need for someone with the right industry experience to manage the production of quotations for large scale extraction projects,” says Kieran, “and when the directors asked me if I was interested in coming back to take up my old role, it didn’t take too much persuasion!” “Customers’ quotations are being turned around much more quickly now we’ve got Kieran back onboard,” adds Jake Oldfield, “which obviously benefits our customers, but also allows the rest of the team to concentrate on their individual roles.” In addition to preparing quotations for installation projects, Kieran also manages the online shop, as well as keeping Extractly’s social media accounts up to date with the latest news. “It’s great to be back working with colleagues that I can also call friends,” concludes Kieran, “and I’m looking forward to playing my part in what I believe will be a successful future for Extractly.”
Extraction ductwork installed in Omega’s paint shop (Photo: Omega PLC) Back in 2008 Jordan Rickett was studying ‘Sport and Exercise Science’ but, after completing a 3-year BTEC course, he switched his sights towards a more hands-on career in automotive mechanics technology. In 2014, and now a qualified mechanic, Jordan commenced work at DCS as a service engineer, and in 2018 was promoted to the position of Service Manager. Fast forward another 3 years and Jordan is now eager to pursue his career as Service Manager with the rest of the team at Extractly. “I’m really looking forward to renewing working relationships with some former customers in the woodworking industry,” says Jordan, “as well as forging new connections with future customers who are looking for the more personal, bespoke service that we’re able to provide at Extractly.” Extractly has secured ongoing arrangements as the ‘preferred supplier’ to a number of high-profile clients, including South Yorkshire-based kitchen manufacturer Omega PLC. With a 400,000 sq ft facility, comprising factory, warehousing and offices, Omega have an almost ongoing requirement for extraction system modifications and maintenance. As an approved Ecogate® installer, Extractly are able to monitor and maintain the energy-saving extraction control system previously installed by DCS and, in addition, Extractly’s service team ensures the extraction system remains compliant with COSHH regulations, and that all LEV testing is carried out in line with HSE guidelines. “We’ve been operating on this site for the best part of 25 years, and the plant has undergone several phases of expansion over that time”, explains Omega’s engineering manager, Mick Bye. “The extraction system has had to keep pace with these developments, and we enjoyed a great working relationship with DCS in the past. We were always assured by the competent, comprehensive service they provided; the attention to detail, and the quality of work undertaken in our factory, it’s nice to know we can now rely on that same commitment, from the same team, at Extractly.”

Feature Wadkin Bursgreen Launches Three New Woodworking Machines This Summer AMS has added three new machine lines to their already impressive portfolio of Wadkin Bursgreen woodworking machinery – They have added two new ranges: Wall saws, Grinders and new models to their crosscut range. Since last year, AMS has been looking for new machines and models because of the numerous requests. One of the ranges that was on their mind for a while now were Wall saw machines. AMS Director said: “We have a big range of panel saws, but some of our customers prefer a wall saw because of the restricted space in their workshops. For years, we were aware of machines out there but were looking for a top-quality wall saw, safe and easy for operation as all our Wadkin Bursgreen machines are”. He continues: “We have added the Wadkin Bursgreen Premium 4122 and Standard 4122 wall saws to our everexpanding range of panel saws. The Wadkin Bursgreen Wall Saws have a powerful main motor and can carry the largest Jumbo sheets that can be processed. The difference between the standard and the premium is that the Premium 4122 also includes a digital measuring system, pneumatic locking to the saw head and a TRK extraction system”. Another field that the Leicestershire woodworking company wanted to cover were grinders. The AMS Sales Manager said: During our 13 years of history, we have rebuilt and sold a lot of Wadkin NZs and Wadkin Visage grinders but we wanted to have our own Wadkin Bursgreen grinder with the latest state of the art technology” AMS are well known and respected in the Timber milling industry and with their Wadkin pedigree they have developed the Wadkin Bursgreen 320 NZ automatic straight knife grinder. This new grinder is capable of accepting 320mm long blocks and can process up to 32 knives on a 320mm diameter cutting circle. All actions are controlled from the built in PLC display and the NZ name is a direct nod towards their Wadkin heritage which burns deep in their DNA. The last incorporations are the Wadkin Bursgreen WB 640 and WB 700 radial arm cross cuts. The already comprehensive Wadkin Bursgreen cross cut range is composed of radial arm, up cut, high speed and automatic Angle master crosscuts. The machines will sit nicely either side of the existing classic WB 400 radial arm cross cut giving a wider range of material sizes to be processed. AMS now have over 320 machines in stock with 42 installed in the demonstration area ready for customer demonstrations. T: 0844 844 9949 E: sales@advancedmachinery.co.uk. Profile High Productivity Integrated Line For The Machining Of Windows The world of windows and doors is evolving in order to keep pace with the latest market trends and the new intelligent domotics systems. The windows are enhanced with ever more advanced technical solutions and specifications to make our homes even more attractive, safe and comfortable. Technological innovation is once again the key to the success of industry manufacturers.
HIGH PRODUCTIVITY INTEGRATED LINE FOR THE WINDOWS MACHINING
Automation
Double end profiling
Moulder
Drilling solutions
Internorm knows something about this. A leading Austrian company at European level in the production of windows and doors, for whom SCM developed a full line of throughfeed moulding, tenoning, drilling-routing and profiling. In practical terms, a complete high performance system for the production of high-tech wood/aluminium windows, like the ones responsible for placing this company at the top of the market over the last few decades. SCM has been a partner to Internorm for over twenty years. Following an initial integrated line installed in 1995 to deal with the growing production in the standard wooden window sector and, after numerous other investments aimed at the production of special windows, in 2011, the company invested in an even more advanced, integrated and high performance line, a “System 8”, to anticipate quantity and quality market trends. The advantages of this line From the outset, the SCM Engineering team aimed to satisfy the need for a line dedicated to the production of doors and frames, capable of achieving maximum levels of productivity that were above standard (8 door
elements and 6 frames a minute) and to simultaneously guarantee excellent flexibility in the case of “batch 1” machining of elements with varying lengths: from 220 right up to 3500 millimetres. All the SCM technology supplied guarantees fully automatic set-up with times of less than a minute. In addition, the work is further optimised and simplified by the Maestro active watch line supervisor software that allows for the entire production process to be managed, the status of each individual machine and the entire line to be monitored in real time and a two-way interconnection with factory IT systems. Throughfeed moulding Higher productivity is already being achieved at this early stage of the process. Thanks to the “superset tx” automatic throughfeed moulder, with innovative set-up system which, when using tools of different diameters, reduces the machine’s set-up time by up to 20 times. A connection transfer conveyor with buffer function and 180° tip-over function of the pieces, allows for the temporary accumulation and dispatch of pieces to the next machines as soon as they are free, thus balancing production based on their machining times and keeping them constantly powered.
34
www.p-j-production.com
Profile Tenoning Once the pieces have been moulded, they are transferred by the transfer conveyor to the “celaschi tlv” tenoning area with two single-sided, symmetrical and complementary tenoning machines. These allow for tenoning on the head of the piece to be carried out, and then on the tail, after the piece has been properly positioned to guarantee the perfect length. Thanks to the use of single-sided tenoning machines, pieces of differing lengths can be machined, just as is done in “batch 1” production. Once tenoned, the pieces are loaded onto another connecting and buffering table and then rotated 90° for the next stage in the drilling-routing centres. Profiling Another transporter with buffer function, essential for balancing the flow frequencies, conveys the piece to a “profitech” profiling machine to externally profile door and frame elements. Numerous advantages of this SCM solution include the 12-position tool storage and highly versatile electro-spindles that allow you to move from one profile to another without the intervention of an operator.
Drilling-routing The “fleximat” passing through drilling and routing centre takes centre stage in this process. performing all the accessory machinings such as routing for the lock and holes for the handle, meeting and connection positions, required for the next assembly stage of the window. Designed around the customer’s production requirements, “fleximat” can take on different configurations, based on the number and position of the machining units, to the point that it permits simultaneous machining of the units to be drilled and routed, thus drastically reducing cycle times.
Subsequently, other two “profitech” profiling machines deal with the internal profiling of the door and frame. The frames and doors are, therefore, completed on each side and transported on a connecting bench as far as the unloading station where they will be subject to a visual and quality inspection by the operator. The line is completed by a number of other SCM technological solutions designated to special functions or other stages of the process. This is the case - to mention just one example - of the “dmc system t7” wide belt sander with seven operating units: thanks to its modular structure, it can provide a solution for every calibrating, sanding and structuring production requirement. Thanks to the planetary unit’s multidirectionality, excellent finishing results can be achieved that are structured and closed-pore even on window shutters. T: 0115 9770044 www.scm.com

Feature Which Edging Thickness For Which Application? Ostermann supplies edgings made from a variety of materials, in every width up to 100 mm and in different thicknesses. With ABS edgings, you can choose between thin ABS edgings and edging thicknesses of 1 and 2 mm. Which thickness is best suited for a project depends on the application. 0.4 mm? 1 mm? Or rather a 2 mm safety edging? Which is the best edging thickness? - Or rather: “Is there even that one ideal thickness?” The answer is quite clearly “no”. How thick an edging should be depends on many factors. Searching for the right answer, you should ask yourself the following questions: Am I Processing a Board With a Tangible Feel? Then, ideally, the edging should have as similar a feel as possible. For a wood decor, this can be a wood pore, for example, or a wooden structure. For surfaces with a stone look, Ostermann supplies edgings with a stone finish. The deeper the embossing on a piece of furniture and the more important the feel, the thicker the edging material should be. For decors with a deep embossing, the Ostermann experts therefore recommend edgings with a thickness of 2 mm. Is It About a Smooth Surface? With chipboard, the structure of the panel material may vary depending on the manufacturer or production site. If the chip structure is rather coarse, single wood fibres might show under the edging once it has been heated by the glue and cooled down again. This so-called telegraphy effect is particularly noticeable with high gloss edgings. Therefore, if a smooth surface is of the essence, a 2 mm edging is the product of choice. With MDF boards, a thickness of 1 mm is sufficient. Is the Core of the Board Rather Dark? If you want to apply a very light-coloured edging onto chipboard with comparatively dark panel material, we recommend using a 2 mm edging, as well. The thicker plastic layer on the cut edge prevents the dark chips from showing through.
Does Your Workpiece Have a Round or Linear Style? Due to the stronger radius, 2 mm edgings generally make furniture appear a little rounder. If you prefer a linear look, you should select a more slender edging, i.e. the 1 mm variant. Does the Furniture Have to Be Shock-Resistant on the Edges? You probably already guessed it ... the answer is clearly: in this case, select a 2 mm edging. Classic applications are desks or worktops. The thicker edging definitely offers more protection against impacts or damage. Summary There is not one edging thickness which is suited for all applications. Instead, processors should know about the individual advantages and disadvantages of different edging thicknesses and select an edging that fits the furniture, application, and the board material. The Ostermann online shop offers a large selection of furniture edgings in many different dimensions. You can see at a glance which thicknesses are available for the required edging, and order the right thickness immediately. Stocked goods are generally delivered within 24 hours. Ostermann Services at a glance - Edgings from 1 metre - Edgings in every width up to 100 mm - Edgings in various thicknesses - Edgings in ABS, Melamine, 3D-acrylic, Aluminium, Real wood veneer - Airtec edgings despatched after 2-4 working days - Laser edgings despatched after 2-4 working days - Infratec edgings despatched after 2-4 working days - Edgings pre-glued with hotmelt adhesive upon request - The largest Cross-Reference-List in Europe with over 150,000 matches - Europe‘s largest edging range - All orders placed before 4.00pm are delivered within 24 hours
Is the Radius Supposed to Be Subtle? For production reasons, there is always a slight frame effect on the finished edging. It results from the scraper removing the surface material at the radius of the edging. If you want to keep the radius as small and thus as subtle as possible, you can opt for a 1 mm thick edging. This has proven particularly effective for high gloss or super matt edgings. Is It an Invisible Edging? One distinctive feature of upscale furniture is that high quality ABS edgings are applied even to invisible narrow surfaces, for example at the rear side of the furniture. Specially for this purpose, Ostermann offers thin ABS edgings with a thickness of 0.4 mm that match many standard edgings in decor and colour. Tel: 01905 793550 E: s.parsons@ostermann.eu
Ostermann offers ABS edgings in thicknesses of 1 and 2 mm as well as thin ABS with a thickness of 0.4 mm. The perfect thickness always depends on the application.

Profile Modular CNC Solution With Added Value Machining centres come in many forms, and often with lots of options. A new modular concept is now available, comprehensively bundled with an array of application-oriented equipment for Joinery. Packed with productivity enhancing features for 5-axis machining, MAKA aims to make their new PM-Modular the most Universal CNC machining centre for Joinery appeal to both ambitious beginners and highly experienced CNC professionals, and so provide the solution to help take their business to the next level. Maka Systems GmbH, the Bavarian pioneer in specialised CNC machining centres, has acquired substantial experience over the enterprise’s 70 years. The new generation of engineers remain just as committed and passionate to provide precisely engineered solutions for wood. Joinery applications for interior and exterior parts, doors, windows, structural beams, handrails and stairs are key sectors for Maka. Application-oriented Maka’s CNC’s remain in high demand due not only to their sturdy constructions, but also for the robust technology with intelligently configured application-specific accessories. This provides the end-user with many advantages. Bespoke solutions for bespoke Joiners As models developed and the variety of applications grew, the plethora of options became larger, more complicated, and costlier. The new PM-Modular effectively simplifies the offering, providing a complete packaged solution for Joinery companies, large and small. As Maka UK’s MD, Iain Young, explains “We’ve always aimed to meet every individual customer request, and meet them without effort or complication for the end-user. Bundling
Robust and precise with the POWER-MAKA 5-axis head. Image: Maka all the best, most efficient devices and functions into one complete package makes economic sense, and makes life easier. Joinery manufacturing becomes easier and quicker, and improves design flexibility and quality. Production efficiency is improved significantly too.” Resilience built-in “Furthermore” Iain explains, “Flexibility, as we have all seen over the past year, is essential. Joinery manufacturers need the resilience and ability to adapt or pivot, to readjust to changing markets, tastes, and even the shocks life and the economy may throw at us.” Modular and complete Simplifying the PM options has been accomplished without detriment to performance or reliability, and has ensured the complete package is a highly robust and flexible manufacturing system, as any Maka customer has come to expect. The PM-Modular is available in 3 distinct variants according to machining capacity of 4, 6 or 8 metres in length, by 1600 mm wide, and with the 800 mm Z axis, the usable 5-axis envelope is 400 mm high. There’s a choice of either the standard Maka pod and rails, a firm favourite with stair manufacturers, or a large flat-bed matrix vacuum table, ideal for panel processing and nesting. Both types are zoned, for non-stop tandem-loading, ideal for high volume batch production. Access all areas A unique option is also possible. The new PM-Modular is now available with operator access from all sides. (i.e. Load from both long sides, front and back).
Tool changing is quick, even with the large 33 tool magazine, seen here from inside, during the tool change cycle. Tools are loaded in the ATC from outside.

This unusual feature is not exactly new, but rarely available with modern moving gantry type CNC’s with pod and rails. Operator Access is usually limited to the front only, which can be restrictive at times.
Profile It is particularly useful for handling. and setting, large and heavy components such as timber beams, and large shaped panels and frames.” The design of cabin, with high lift gas-assisted hoods on both sides, is also particularly helpful. There’s excellent visibility of the 33 tool positions and 5-axis head, and accessibility is improved. Tools are loaded from outside the machine, making manual tool-loading both easier, quicker and safer. Efficient Tooling Typical joinery applications can often be highly demanding on tooling, to reduce cycle times, and produce the designs to the desired finish quality. Maka’s large chain type magazine provides the ability to store and automatically change heavier tools than the typical standard CNC machine. Rapid tool change Maka’s double arm ATC mechanism enables HSK63F compatible tools to be selected in advance, masking the majority of the tool changing time. Intelligent Control Maka’s expertise in special CNC machine systems is also a key feature of the new PM-Modular. The use of modern data transmission systems, including Balluff IO-Link with sensors and actuators built-in, simplifies the mechatronics, making maintenance easier, and enhances reliability too. The IO-Link simplifies networked production and allows extended machine diagnosis.
Sleek and easy to navigate Maka controls provide complete connectivity with Siemens Sinumerik ONE. waste conveyor, and automatic dust extraction hoods which self-adjust to the cutting height, maximising dust extraction efficiency and operator safety. Fast-Setting The Pod bases feature Maka’s renowned Click-System, mounted on sturdy and precise movable rails, for use with vacuum pods and pneumatic clamps and jaws, all of which are easily and quickly interchangeable. They are also highly robust and stable for the long-term. Manufacture without compromise The CNC Machining Centre has long become a staple tool for all industrial production operations, including furniture and joinery, but not always found to be as successful as many users may wish. This is often due to the complications and limitations of the equipment employed. Maka take a no-compromise approach to everything they design and build, and deliver production systems which work exactly, and provide the efficiency and flexibility required. Manufacturing from screen-to-machine is a reality. Attractive proposition The PM-Modular makes for an interesting and highly attractive proposition for any Joinery manufacturer.
The new “PM Modular” from Maka is a cost-effective CNC solution for (almost) all joinery applications. By employing such high-level technology, integrating third party devices such as clamps is easier, simpler, more reliable, and faster !
