News DIPA Symposium The second DIPA Symposium will take place in autumn 2021. Organized by the Digital Printing Association (DIPA), the “Creating Your Own Surfaces” conference is planned as a hybrid event in Hannover or, alternatively, as a purely digital event – depending on the then-state of the COVID-19 pandemic. The association is targeting the full range of companies that produce or market tailored, individually designed surfaces.
Field reports from users will be delivered by Ali Özyilmaz, Managing Director of MB Digitalprint, and Sebastian Wendel, Head of Product Management and Design Development with the CLASSEN Group.
Consisting of a series of presentations in English and German, the symposium will highlight the latest trends, including reports from the field, on the topic of “creating your own surfaces”. It is also devoted to promoting knowledge sharing and networking between interested parties and companies which are already successfully using digital printing or are planning to do so. The presentations and panel discussions will be streamed live.
DIPA (Digital Printing Association) – New members The formation of the future DIPA association was announced at LIGNA in May 2019 by the Homag Group, MB Digitalprint, Li&Co, Durst Phototechnik, Adler-Werk Lackfabrik and Deutsche Messe Hannover. Following formal establishment of the association in October 2020, additional companies have now signed on, including AVA Cad Cam, CEFLA, ColorGate, CRUSE Spezialmaschinen, Hymmen, Interprint, KBA König Bauer, Plantag Coatings, SURTECO, Teknos and warda design.
DIPA.Preview Digital A glimpse inside DIPA will be offered by DIPA.Preview Digital – an event which will be held on 11 May 2021, directly following the LIGNA Outlook on the digital networking and content platform, which is scheduled to take place in late September. The presentations and interviews with digital printing experts will be broadcast live from the Media Factory at the Hannover Exhibition Center. The program will provide an insight into developments in the digital printing market in general as well as the woodworking industries by Lorenzo Villa, co-founder and managing director of the Italian-based company Density and Karl-Heinz Scholz of S&P Management Consultants.
Automatic crosscut saws
The DIPA.Preview will be rounded off by a Q&A session with members of the DIPA board representing the members of the association.
As a cooperative network for the skilled trades and industrially oriented enterprises, the association is geared to all companies and users who are involved in creating custom surface designs. These consist of companies that manufacture digitally printed surfaces, companies that distribute digitally printed workpieces, and suppliers who provide the concomitant technology, raw materials and services.

Combilift Scoops 10th Major Archie Award Recognition for innovation from the FLTA Combilift, the Irish manufacturer of a wide range of handling solutions, has won its 10th prestigious industry award from the Forklift Truck Association for one of its latest products. The 2020 FLTA Awards for Excellence took place virtually on Saturday 10th April, having been postponed from last year due to Covid. The recently introduced Combi-CBE model - the world’s first counterbalance design, multidirectional forklift with electric drive on all of its three wheels, was one of the twelve finalists in the hotly contested Innovation Category. According to the host of this year’s Awards, “this is the category that everyone wants to win, as you get to feel incredibly clever.” So Combilift was immensely proud that the jury singled it out as the outright winner.
applications and offers cost effective and efficient operation. It also answers growing market demand for powerful and quieter electric forklifts which comply with ever more stringent emissions guidelines. The FLTA commented as follows: “a clever and innovative design, Combilift’s entry impressed the panel with its unique, independent front and rear wheel drive, letting it handle long loads in the tightest spaces while minimising tyre wear.” Combilift CEO and Co-Founder Martin McVicar said: “Innovation is a cornerstone of Combilift’s product development and, given the large number of excellent finalists this year, we would like to thank the FLTA jury of industry experts for recognising our achievements.”
The Combi-CBE features internationally patented electric traction which enables independent control of each of the front and rear drive wheels and guarantees 100% traction control, which negates the need for differential lock when it is operating on wet or slippery surfaces. As the truck drives and steers, the speed and rotational direction of the wheels are controlled independently. Operators benefit from precise acceleration and deceleration control, which significantly reduces long load momentum twisting when travelling sideways. Each electric drive incorporates parking and regenerative dynamic braking for power efficiency and AC drive means that there are no mechanical brushes to maintain or replace. Combining the benefits of very compact dimensions and the ability to handle long loads as well as pallets, the multidirectional Combi-CBE is a universal truck for multiple

News Pioneering Rochdale Manufacturer Wins Rare Queen’s Award Crystal Doors, which has completely transformed its factory in response to the climate emergency, is one of just 17 organisations to be honoured with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development ahead of the COP26 climate summit in November.
The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, established in 1965, are the most prestigious business awards in the UK. Winning businesses are able to use the esteemed Queen’s Awards emblem for the next five years.
• Small business punching above its weight to pioneer climatefriendly manufacturing
Only 29 companies in the North of England have been recognised in the Sustainable Development category since it was first introduced in 2000. Crystal Doors is the first ever Rochdale business to win the award.
• Saving £200,000 a year through innovative green technology and employee engagement • Company to end relationships with customers or suppliers who refuse to commit to net zero by the end of 2021 Crystal Doors manufactures vinyl-wrapped doors and components for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, employing 34 people. The company has been recognised with the prestigious national award after pioneering an innovative approach to achieving net zero manufacturing. A radical cashflow neutral sustainability programme – featuring smart autonomous machinery, energy efficient technologies, solar panels, electric vehicles, carbon literacy training and biomass heating fuelled by the factory’s own waste – has reduced Crystal Doors’ direct carbon footprint by nearly 80% in just five years. The measures are also saving nearly £200,000 a year in energy and material savings, showing that it is both possible and desirable for businesses to take action on their climate impact. Managing Director Richard Hagan, who first recognised the need to act after environmental concerns nearly closed the factory in 2015, said: “The science says we only have a few years of inaction left before achieving our global agreements on greenhouse gas emissions become impossible. This is our collective responsibility as businesses, and we want to show that even smaller organisations with tight purse strings can play their part.”
“We’re proud of our industrial heritage here in Rochdale and the wider North,” Richard added. “It’s even more important we kickstart the transition to a green economy in economically deprived areas like ours, where we can create high quality green jobs for local communities.” Rochdale MP, Tony Lloyd, said: “Rochdale has set an ambitious target to be carbon neutral by 2038, far ahead of the UK’s 2050 target. If the government puts the right policies in place, the North of England has enormous potential to use its industrial expertise to drive a green industrial revolution and green recovery in the UK. Congratulations to Richard and Crystal Doors for their well-deserved Queen’s Award win and for showing us all what’s possible.” Crystal Doors is now planning to reach full carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain in time for the UN COP26 climate summit in Glasgow in November, partly by ending work with companies that have not committed to net zero themselves.

Profile Integrated Cell System For The Production Of Customised Furnishings Automisation of processes, production flexibility, machining quality and reduced delivery times to keep up with increasingly faster, on-line purchasing methods. These are the priorities for businesses involved in customised furniture designing covering the entire production process from the project to delivery. But how can we reconcile all these needs? SCM offers integrated systems of flexible “batch 1” cells capable of meeting market trends with two results: optimisation of processes and a significant reduction in costs and energy consumption. This is the case of the solution outlined here, with a production capacity of 1500 pieces per shift, designed by the Engineering team for a leading Spanish company in the furniture and design industry. Sizing cell The cell consists of two automatic three-axis “flexstore el” storages, integrated with two “gabbiani g 3” and “gabbiani gt 3” sizing machines that both perform well in terms of speed and machining quality. There is also a machine for cutting the smallest off cuts and finest material: the “class si 400” sliding carriage sizing machine. Not only does the system have a separate magazine for managing the rejects that are automatically reintroduced but it is also highly versatile and capable of adapting to production needs. While the three sizing machines are equipped with specific functions, they can be interchanged depending on the amount of material being machined and the kind of re-usable off cuts. Integration with the “Maestro active watch” cell supervisor software and the “Maestro store” magazine is also key as they allow you to manage storages outside of the cell, used to store materials in other areas of the factory or the smaller or fine panels. Square-edging Flexibility is the keyword even for the square-edgebanding cell consisting of two “stefani sb one” unilateral edgebanders with automatic feed system for perfect panel sizing and squaring.
The strength of these solutions designed for big industry lies with their ability to work panels in sequence and just-intime with different sizes, applied edge and machining, with small or pure “batch 1” batches. These machines are fully electronic and can achieve three radii automatically thanks to the Multiedge system. They have 24 roll edge magazines, ensure a rapid and automatic change of glue colour and perform routing inside and outside the feed tracks. The “Maestro active watch” supervision software is also key: thanks to the bar code on each panel, the software can match the right machining program and trace and control all the process stages to each piece, as well as further control functions and production reporting. The edgebanding of special and prototype pieces is done in another cell, consisting of an “olimpic k 800” unilateral edgebander with “Touch 7” control interface and panel return. Stand-alone solutions to complement the process... SCM proposes two state-of-the-art technological solutions:the “morbidelli p800” drilling, routing and edge treatment machining centre, ideal for machining and achieving “just-in-time” panels ready for assembly. It is highly versatile and can be used in two ways: to apply the shaped edging to panels already squared or to drill, route and edge the unfinished panel. If the pieces being machined are mainly curved, the machining centre allows you to skip the passage in the squaring-edgebanding cell proving itself to be a real “wild card” in any factory. Some of its key advantages include its extremely fast setup times thanks to the Matic automatic table with suction cups and bars that move automatically and simultaneously with anti-collision check. The compact CN “morbidelli cx220” drilling centres for machining special and prototype panels. Its worktable allows you to drill even delicate surfaces with excellent finishing results. The new, shaped holddown grippers mean that panels can be machined even in positions inside the grippers, greatly reducing cycle times and optimising workpiece clamping. www.scm.com

Feature New SuperUp & SuperPush Crosscuts from Salvador A world leader in sawing technology, Italian based Salvador have added two new products to their already impressive line-up of automatic crosscut saws; SuperUp, SuperPush 150. Both models will shortly be available for viewing and demonstration in the Nottingham showroom of sole UK & Ireland distributors Daltons Wadkin. Replacing the Salvador Classic range of semi-automatic machines is the all-new SuperUp. The working principle of the machine remains the same with safe two-handed operator control, but the overall design is now stronger with improved accessibility for maintenance and blade changing. Pneumatic controls for regulation of the saw stroke are now conveniently located above the machine bed making adjustment for varying material types/ thicknesses simple. The added strength of the machine enables sawing capacities to be increased with blade sizes of 500/ 550 and 600mm available. The previous Classic model featured a fixed front saw guard that encumbered machine loading and unloading in tight workspaces. The new SuperUp model now offers an optional automatic retracting front protection guard, allowing operators to front load the machine across the sawline without having to manoeuvre the entire length of the workpiece onto the infeed table. Infeed and outfeed tables can be specified in any length with a choice of manual and pneumatically operated flip down stops. For added productivity the SuperPush 150 provides a fully programmable optimising stop system. An evolution in crosscutting, the new Salvador SuperPush 150 combines the compact form factor of a manual machine with the programmable power of an automatic optimising crosscut saw. With competitive pricing and customisable specifications, now anyone carrying out crosscutting

operations can take advantage of reduced labour costs, reduced waste, increased productivity, and increased accuracy. Operators can be trained in minutes. No keyboard, no mouse. Operation is intuitive using the large 15.6” touch screen display and dedicated saw cycle buttons. Cutting lists can be quickly programmed at the machine or imported from an office spreadsheet. As standard the SuperPush 150 features an automatic retracting front protection guard, allowing the machine to be front loaded across the saw-line making the overall footprint considerably smaller. The machine can be operated in one of three modes; push, stop or optimisation. Push for working with repeat sizes or standard cutting list, stop for ad-hoc fixed lengths and optimisation for minimising waste from cutting lists. The stop system is controlled by the latest Salvador optimising algorithm, powered by a digital servo motor driving a steel reinforced toothed belt. The stop is continually monitored with real time feedback - if a heavy workpiece knocks the stop during loading it instantly corrects itself ensuring precision cutting every time. Further options include label printing for piece identification and bar code scanner for quick recall of cutting lists. For more information or to arrange a working demonstration on any of the Salvador crosscutting systems contact Daltons Wadkin.

Profile Blum – A Family Of Hinges Blum have been making hinges for nearly 70 years, and over that time their hinges have been refined and improved to provide intricate and reliable performance. With a family of the standard CLIP top BLUMOTION hinge, as well as specialist hinges for glass, mirrored and extra thin doors, there really is a hinge for all applications. The CLIP top BLUMOTION hinge combines easy installation (just clip the hinge into place) with near perfect motion, and integrated BLUMOTION closing – ensuring a silent smooth closing action. Regardless of door weight or size, this hinge will work for the lifetime of the furniture. It can even accommodate a furious slam of the door! The BLUMOTION mechanism can also be de-activated if required – which can be useful with very light-weight doors. There is a 110° hinge option which allows you to implement thicker doors of up to 24 mm – depending on application. The new pivoting point prevents collision with the cabinet front edge when the door is open. Or the CLIP top BLUMOTION 107° hinge, which requires impressively little drilling depth (just 11.5 mm) making this hinge suitable for thin door depths of 15 mm or more. Finally there is a 155° wide angle zero protrusion option, which ensures that even cabinets with internal pullouts, like the popular SPACE TOWER larder solution, can use the award winning CLIP top BLUMOTION technology.
The EXPANDO T hinge, a German Design Award winner, is designed for ultra-thin (from 8mm to 14mm) door fronts, a growing trend in kitchen design. The minimal 6mm drilling depth is the solution for this hinge, which also has BLUMOTION integrated into the hinge. In their Austrian head office, hinges are tested to 200,000 opening/closing actions – that’s 20 years’ worth of usage. And the lifetime guarantee means that, in the unlikely event of a failure, the hinge will be replaced with no questions asked. T: 01908 285700 www.blum.com
The CRISTALLO hinge for glass and mirrored doors has super-accurate stability. The adhesion plate is simply glued onto the door, using the handy adhesion template, and then the hinge is clipped into place. The linear design ensures that the new hinge blends discretely into furniture such as glass display units.

Alexander Cleghorn moves towards a single supply chain with HOMAG UK The furniture manufacturer, Alexander Cleghorn, began life just after World War II in the Stoke Newington back garden of Alex and Winnie Cleghorn. Continued growth led to the incorporation of the company in 1958, followed in 1970 by its move to the current site in Tiptree, Essex. Still very much a family run business, it now turns over £12.5 million focusing on the supply of wood-based sheet materials to many industries. The company’s 85-strong team services sectors including office, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture manufacturers, shopfitting, schools/ colleges, hotels and restaurants. With a reputation for providing a high level of service and a personal touch, Alexander Cleghorn continually looks for opportunities to improve its manufacturing capabilities. “Currently, we occupy a 16-acre site with 100,000 sq. ft. of covered buildings,” explains director, Gary Cleghorn. He continues, “We refer to ourselves as a bulk bespoke furniture manufacturer that can produce anything from a single piece to thousands of the same item. “Over the last ten years, we’ve been moving towards a single supply chain. This strategy has developed for several reasons, not least being the ever-growing importance of software to control the increasing complexity of the machinery. By gravitating towards one machinery and software supplier, we believe it will give us a long-term competitive advantage.”

Developing a partnership with HOMAG UK “Almost by natural selection, HOMAG has emerged as our machinery and software supply chain partner. The quality of its products, coupled with the excellent level of service and support, have created a solid foundation for the partnership. This has flourished with the open and candid relationship between our people and HOMAG’s teams in both the UK and Germany. “There is now a level of trust and respect between our two companies that opens the door to innovation and solutions that otherwise might be missed. The HOMAG personnel are in-tune, not only with our business, but also our values. Their engineers work closely with our in-house experts to specify the machinery that is absolutely right for our requirements. “Whether it is replacing an old piece of equipment, finding a solution to a bottleneck in our production or suggesting a new machine that will take our manufacturing to the next level, we can rely on HOMAG for the right advice and support.” The need for a new saw, a vertical drilling CNC and laser edging technology “Even though we lean towards a single supplier, we always research what the market has to offer when we are exploring new machinery and software. Looking at our three most recent investments, each was required for different reasons.
Case Study “The HOMAG SAWTEQ B-300 was purchased to replace an ageing saw. The new saw had to complement our two existing saws. The focus for the new saw was the ability to handle smaller batch runs, smaller panels and more delicate materials. We also needed it to be quick to prep and capable of processing work rapidly and accurately. “With the DRILLTEQ V-200, it was simply a matter of wanting to increase our capacity in this area. We already had two larger BHX 500 machines and an earlier version of the V-200, so we knew exactly what was required. The new DRILLTEQ gives us not only increased throughput, but also the flexibility to handle the smaller more difficult panels. In addition, its minimal footprint maximised space utilisation in our factory. “As far as the laser edging capability is concerned, this new technology was something we’d been considering for some time. We already had a HOMAG high-speed KFL 612 edge bander with an automated feed and stacking system, but with the increasing demand for high-end furniture, particularly premium boardroom furniture, we needed a different solution to provide the very highest level of finish. “We felt that a key aspect to achieving the standards required for these products was a move to shaped laser edging; a technology which consistently delivers an almost invisible join. Working closely with HOMAG, we were able to specify a machine that would handle a diverse range of production challenges. “At an investment in the region of £1 million, however, the decision to opt for the HOMAG CENTATEQ E-700 was not something we arrived at lightly. In fact, the whole process unfolded over a two-year period. I went on visits around Europe to see the machine in operation. These visits allowed me to talk to other manufacturers to get their opinions as to the performance and scope of the machine’s capabilities. “Throughout our ruminations, HOMAG’s willingness to investigate and stretch the boundaries of what was achievable was impressive. They worked with us to ensure that the final specification of the CENTATEQ E-700 would deliver exactly what was needed.” The benefits of partnering with HOMAG “Although price is important to us, it’s never our starting point. Our most important considerations are faith in the people we’re buying from and confidence in their products: Are they well-made to high standards with first-class components and do they represent excellent value for money?
“With HOMAG we have that faith and confidence. Their people listen and are willing to work with us. They diligently work through the challenges we present and always come up with a solution, even when it’s something that doesn’t yet exist! “Working with them enables us to prepare for the future. It opens up opportunities to bring new products to market by staying ahead of the curve. The cutting edge HOMAG machinery and software is without question the bedrock of our business,” concludes Gary Cleghorn. If you would like a demonstration or more information on HOMAG’s machinery or software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

Profile Guhring Compresses Productivity with New Up/Down Cut Tools For the machining of laminated materials such as particle boards, MDF, plywood, veneered wood composites and also material found in the manufacture of caravans & motorhomes, Guhring UK has now introduced its new line of up-cut down-cut compression tools. Manufacturers in the woodworking and modern material production sectors can now machine these challenging materials with the confidence that the world-leading Guhring brand brings to the industry. The issue when processing laminated materials is the potential de-lamination that is often found on entry & break out caused by the cutting forces and the tool geometry being applied to the material. However, the opposing helix design of the new Guhring compression tools eradicates this issue for manufacturers whilst improving tool life, productivity and edge finishes. The compression cutters from Guhring incorporate a fluted design that enables customers to achieve optimal feed and productivity rates with the assurance that the innovative tool geometry can eliminate the potential for workpiece chipping and delamination due to the two opposing helix geometries in a single tool. The new Guhring compression tools are available in the two flute or three flute variants to meet the complete needs of the industry. The solid carbide cutters are also available with different coatings as an optional extra, providing a technical advantage whether machining hard and abrasive
materials or preventing edge build-up when machining at speeds from 15,000 to 35,000rpm. The coating technology is complemented by Guhring’s extremely hard-wearing solid carbide substrate designed specifically for these types of materials that prolongs tool life and wear resistance. The combination of the coating technology, geometry and solid carbide substrate enables this new series of tools to achieve feed rates of 15 to 40m/min when cutting at speeds up to 35,000rpm. The cutting parameters are dependant upon the end-users machine tool, material types and machining strategies, but the Guhring engineering team are experts who are on-hand to help to maximise performance for endusers. The new 3-flute compression tools are available in diameters from 6.35mm to 16mm with an overall length from 64 to 110mm depending upon the diameter selected. Each diameter range has a choice of a different up-cut helix and down-cut helix lengths to suit the specific application of the end-user. This includes an up-cut flute geometry length from 5 to 10mm with a down-cut flute length from 20 to 55mm depending upon the diameter tool selected. The 2-flute variant is offered in diameters from 6 to 16mm with up-cut and down-cut flute lengths similar to the 3-flute variant. For further information on how the new Guhring compression tools can improve the productivity of your laminate and modern material machining, please contact Guhring.

Zero glue line – by hand Stand A710 & A750 FEN UK will be demonstrating the new portable HIT-M Zero glue line machine, which is perfect for applying edgebanding to both straight and shaped panels, all without requiring any adhesive application whatsoever. Thanks to the hot air injection technology, this machine can be used to apply “laser” co-extruded edging or specially pre-coated materials quickly and easily. It is a real step forward for edgebanding difficult shaped panels, but at a realistic budget.
When considering that there is no need for a glue pot at all, which due to the very low feed speed required when applying tape to shaped panels, in the past shape edgebanders have always been baking the adhesive in the machine leading to degradation of the glue line and overall finish. When used in conjunction with the very robust support table, even panels with an angle up to 55° can be edgebanded easily, without any glue line and without any hassle. The HIT-M can also be used as a portable edgebander, for example it is very handy to carry along
onsite to quickly repair panel edges perfectly. Heat up time is only 30 seconds, so the machine is always ready when needed. When equipped with
the option for extra thick panels, it is even possible to apply up to 105 mm edging materials. 01332 516557 www.fenuk.com
Clever panel cleaners for your edgebander Do you want clean panels from your edgebanding machine with a top finish, at a lower cost and using cleaning agents which are nonhazardous? Well, make sure to visit the FEN UK stand and ask about LCM cleaning agents. Take a look at the latest Brush-Tec cleaning an polishing system and see how that might fit in your machine. The new iRelease system is also on display for lean and green cleaning of panel edges.

Adhesives Filled Or Unfilled, That Is The Question Are you using an EVA adhesive on your edgebander? Are you happy with the bond and finish you’re getting? Henkel offer a collection of EVA adhesives which range from filled to unfilled, and everything else in between, to suit every application, supplying many of the wellknown UK and European furniture manufacturers. But how do you know if you are you using the right EVA adhesive? Let’s take a look at some of the products in the Henkel collection. Technomelt KS 220/1 and Technomelt KS 611 are both filled EVA edgebanding hot melt adhesives, which are easy to apply and offer exceptional performance with a very high final bond strength. Being filled EVA’s they offer the advantage of preventing stringing, whilst at the same time offering higher viscosity, which can be beneficial when applying to porous substrates such as chipboard. In the unfilled hot melt adhesive category there is Technomelt Dorus KS 351. This can be applied at lower coat-weights, thereby minimising the glue line and achieving tighter joints, whilst offering high glue mileage and high final bond strength. This was one of our top selling grades in 2020 and has really grown in standing to attain the status as the UK’s frontrunner and main contender when selecting an unfilled grade. So that was a quick highlight review of our top Henkel EVA hot melt adhesives for edgebanders, covering the filled and unfilled options. However, it’s not just the adhesive itself that makes Henkel EVA adhesives market leaders. There’s also the technical and onsite support offered by Kenyon’s and endorsed by Henkel that separates them from the competition. So with the complete package of leading adhesives as well as technical support, Kenyon’s really do have the offering that sets them apart from the rest of the field. Kenyon’s don’t just sell adhesives, they live them, and this includes supporting you! Arrange a trial today and see the benefits of Henkel EVA hot melt edgebanding adhesives. The company’s dedicated team of 27 includes very experienced, highly multi-skilled designers, joiners, carpenters, installers, decorators and administrative personnel whose common goal is to deliver excellence. “Our customers, primarily in London and Surrey, are very discerning,” explains Simon. “Quality, longevity and authenticity are of paramount importance; they are keen to maintain or restore the original characteristics of their period properties and the vast majority of our customers, whether owners of new or period properties, also have a strong environmental awareness.
28
www.p-j-production.com
“Timber is the preferred choice for their windows and doors and our bespoke service, our ability to make to individual requirements, to replicate the designs and features of original installations with all the benefits of modern specifications, offers the ultimate appeal. Improved energy efficiency, noise reduction, security and safety “Our windows and doors not only serve to aesthetically enhance and add value to our customers’ properties and to prolong their original characteristics, but they also significantly improve them for modern living, with greatly improved energy efficiency, noise reduction, security and safety. “We continue to experience a complete volte-face in property owners’ perceptions of timber windows and doors. Certainly for SPS and our customers, long gone are the days of rotting, high maintenance wooden structures and a preference for plastic reproductions,” says Simon. “Accoya wood has raised the standards of reliability and performance for timber windows and doors. This premium timber, with Class 1 durability, is guaranteed against rot for 50 years. Combined with our advanced, low maintenance
Case Study microporous paint system, our Accoya wood windows and doors will last for many, many years. SPS Timber Windows was one of the first UK manufacturers to use Accoya wood and continue to use it as the best timber available. High quality, traditionally crafted windows and doors “Our windows and doors are individually made, to exacting standards, in our London workshops and are installed and fully finished by our highly skilled craftsmen, installers and decorators. “High performance double-glazing, high security locking systems, draught sealing, our advanced, low maintenance microporous paint system and the best timber available add optimum performance and durability to authentically reproduced designs. “We are a very well-established, experienced, trusted business, offering a bespoke service. Our customers also appreciate the fact that we offer a comprehensive service, from initial consultation to fully completed installation, and that we manufacture locally. We have a Wimbledon-based showroom, where customers are very welcome to discuss their requirements and view sample windows, doors, glass, fittings. Great products in high demand “Demand for our bespoke Accoya wood windows and doors continues to be very high,” says Simon, “such demand is greatly valued and, as part of our policy of continuous improvement, it is vital that improvements continue to be made to enable us to keep up with the demand,” explains Simon. Having already outgrown two premises, SPS was becoming a victim of its own success and needed to find efficiency in the production process as its set-up of using spindle moulders, tenoners and all the traditional joinery techniques and processes had become a concern. “Whilst the manual input of our highly skilled staff continues to be so very important for the production of our traditionally-made windows and doors, the need to meet the increasing demand for our windows and doors and to speed up production has necessitated the acquisition of additional state-of-the-art machinery.
Efficiency needed to be improved “We carried out a lot of research as to which machine would be best for our purposes,” Simon explains, “we decided on the Crafter as this machine offered everything we needed. We made the right choice! Jaroslav Soukup’s extensive experience, advice and assistance were invaluable. “The Crafter has enabled us to further improve the performance of our latest design of traditional box sash windows which have been awarded an A-rating by the BFRC (British Fenestration Rating Council). “The whole process, from our initial enquiry with Ian Brown through to delivery, commissioning and training, has been excellent. “Soukup arranged a demonstration and training in their modern facility in Prague for our workshop and installations managers, Eric Frimpong and Richard Fitch. “The whole team at Soukup has been extremely helpful and has quickly assisted with any questions. The Crafter machine enables us to produce windows and doors to an excellent quality with greatly improved efficiency. Increasing production capacity “Producing each window takes less than half the time it took previously. Eric Frimpong, our workshop manager, is very impressed with the machine and with how much it has helped to increase our production capacity. We no longer require the older spindle moulders and tenoners and selling these has enabled us to free up some much-needed space. “I, Simon Walker, am full of praise for the Soukup Crafter. We are very pleased with the investment we made in the Crafter and tooling and would highly recommend IWM and the Crafter machine. It is doing everything we had hoped it would do and more. Our expectations have been exceeded. “Ian Brown will be our first port of call for any new machines we’ll be investing in to further improve our efficiency and productivity.” T: 07944108747 E: ibrown@iwmachines.co.uk www.iwmachines.co.uk

Case Study Carlick Contract Furniture Keeps Pace With Soaring Production Demands Using HOMAG Machinery Carlick is one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of contract furniture and bespoke joinery to leading UK pub, bar and restaurant groups. The company was established in Manchester in 1974, predominately as a table manufacturing business. It has now developed an enviable reputation in the industry which is synonymous with unrivalled customer service levels, fast turnaround of projects and specialist knowledge. The company has seen a growth in demand for its products and services as a result of both Brexit and the pandemic, as procurement and compliance manager, Josh O’Donnell explains: “A lot of people are now sourcing furniture products within the UK because they just haven’t got the confidence to bring products in from China or Europe. It’s also costing more to transport products in from Europe due to Brexit.” He continues, “We’re keeping expectations high by providing a two to three week lead time which is quicker than that offered when products are sourced from overseas. As a result, we’re seeing a rise in demand as people are saying it’s just not worth the hassle of trying to source from abroad. Production rates increase by threefold with HOMAG technology “Carlick first installed HOMAG equipment at our100,000 sq. ft. production facility in 2015. We now use five HOMAG machines to produce our furniture, including two edge
banders, a CNC machining centre and two beam saws. “We recently upgraded our capital equipment and installed a HOMAG LOOPTEQ O-300 and EDGETEQ S-500 to replace an ageing edge banding machine. This new equipment has increased our production rates by threefold and enabled us to become much more efficient. “The new software in the EDGETEQ is brilliant as it gives us more flexibility to swap and change between edge tape sizes and different uses. This enables us to manufacture a variety of products to bespoke requirements effortlessly with just a couple of clicks. “The LOOPTEQ O-300 has improved our labour efficiencies as it allows large two-metre long tabletops to be produced on the EDGETEQ by one pderson instead of two. “We now make tabletops quicker as we can swap and change boards more easily. This has enabled us to specify a short three week lead time for products, which has been a godsend during the pandemic. “We have also found that the products produced by the HOMAG machines are of much better quality than they used to be, so we now have far fewer returns,” concludes Josh O’Donnell. If you would like a demonstration or more information on HOMAG’s machinery or software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424.

Company Profile Salvamac: Cutting With 3 S, Solid, Simple And Safe “The event of our anniversary in march 2021 has been the occasion not only to confirm our choices, show our machines, share our ideas and meet our partners (mainly virtually) as we have done in the past and how we will do I in the future but also to celebrate our results that are positively surprising us every month. “ With those words, Christian Salvador commented on the presentation of the result of the first quarter 2021.
a true and relevant group that is based on the support of 4 production units in 3 different countries - Italy, Poland and Turkey to obtain a winning mix of Italian heads and heart with dynamics, advantages and the competences of national realities in strong evolution
Ziemowit Dolkowski co-founder of Salvamac says “Our growth has been greater than 50% in recent months and it was a success that we really did not expect! A success that has not only concerned traditional and already consolidated products but the entire production range and which has led us to the creation of something greater: Salvamac Group.”
The Cross-cutting part specialized in the cutting and optimization of wood, the Air&Painting department where the suction, air filtration, the wood painting systems find the reference point and finally the brand new Salvamac Selection, a real innovation that will be the great natural evolution of the Salvamac project.
Salvamac is the result of over 20 years of experience of the founding partners, Christian Salvador and Ziemowit Dolkowski, who continue to invest their strong passion and their deep knowledge for the sector of woodworking machinery. All this, together with a continuous analysis of the reference market, has allowed Salvamac to create a network of contacts and skills, thus proposing themselves as an ideal partner for those working in woodoworking sector. SALVAMAC continues to move forward in its social and ethical approach to production, and innovation by creating
32

In this perspective, the Salvamac Group multiplies itself exponentially in 3 departments.
Salvamac Cross-Cutting: Cutting With 3 S: Solid, Simple, Safe The first products and more known in UK are the upcut saws equipped with devices that make them real cutting centers: the Classic cutting saws characterized by the 3S of Salvamac’s philosophy. Christian continues “Our professional crosscutting saws are solid, resistant, compact. We build them with high quality materials and complete them with functional options to optimize performance and efficiency.
Company Profile But not only solidity, we firmly believe that safety comes first. With our double button device that is placed in an ergonomic position and with the protection on the blade, you can work safely, we take care of the precautions. Finally We want to make the job easy and therefore offer easy-to-use woodworking machines. You just have to choose the stop and press the two buttons to start the cutting cycle without any adjustment.” The Salvamac’s semi automatic cutting saws are focused on the model Classic 40, 50 and 60, which require limited investment but are a decisive step towards a faster, safer and more efficient production. It is a coherent catalogue to which it is possible to add new aggregates that significantly increase the performance of these undoubtedly “simple” machines, also by means of intelligent loading and unloading systems, as well as automations that allow even small businesses or sophisticated craftsmen to move towards a completely new perspective. Among the aggregates recently launched by Salvamac is the “Salvastop” measuring stop device, a system that electronically manages the stopping and positioning of the boards or profiles to be cut, regardless of the material, with high speed and absolute precision, thanks to a state-of-theart brushless electronic motor. Furthermore, the mechanical system has been designed not to require maintenance over time, while ensuring a high degree of robustness and precision. “Salvastop” can be installed on the “Classic 40”, “Classic 50” and “Classic 60” models, transforming substantially “entry level” models into real semi-automatic cutting centers, made even more interesting by the possibility of interfacing them with the management software already available at the company. An example of how the concepts of “Industry 4.0” can also be applied on “stand-alone” machines, which offer important performances with low investments. It should be noted that the “Salvastop” can also be installed on other
machines, adapting it to all those applications where it is necessary to provide measuring and cutting operations in an extremely effective way. Ziemowit Dolkowski continues: “We have worked hard to create the exclusive software, very easy to use thanks to an immediately understandable and effective, complete, powerful and flexible graphics. It includes 5 different sections and 2 different modes. “STOP” or “PUSH”. Also using a 7” s-PAD touch screen, in an excellent position for reading and programming, not forgetting the included and installed Internet tele-service software. Due to an innovative technological concept we have created a new anodized aluminum beam- section mm 100×100- reinforced and with big thickness of the profile edge.” This beam has got 3 sides with grooves to adapt and install the structure. One side is a flat fence to favour the sliding of the wood on the guide to avoid wearing and dust problems. Thanks to the considerable dimensions of this solution, the pusher carriage reaches a movement speed of up to 60 meters per minute. The transmission system has a 32 mm wide toothed belt, with high precision internal steel cables, ensuring a wide capacity and a very high positioning tolerance. The machined steel heads are robust and independent, designed to have a long life, highly reliable and precise. The compact Servo Drive electronic motor guarantees simplicity, reliability, durability and efficiency. With this innovative technology you can manage closed loop positioning, checking the position at any time, even in case of heavy efforts and accidental external pressure. The motor, that is mounted in pulling position, has a power of 11 Nm and the electrical and electronic inputs and outputs are integrated on the engine itself. Finally, the emergency and start buttons are ergonomically positioned, to facilitate the operator’s work.

The company employs mainly melamine-faced veneered MDF and birch plywood to manufacture a wide range of hand-crafted high-end products. These include both standard and bespoke classroom desks, chairs and tables (including those covering special needs requirements), general storage, fitted washroom and kitchen units, computer suites and reception area furniture. The company’s in-house design service works closely with school equipment specification and purchasing authorities in selecting products considered most appropriate for the different pupil age groups to be accommodated. These include products in a wide choice of different sizes, shapes and brilliant colours that enables the creation of highly individualistic design themes. Installation of the AXYZ Infinite could be described as the apogee in a long-running and highly successful business partnership forged between AAG and Kindercraft. In 2002, the company installed an AXYZ 4008 twin-head router for work previously carried out manually. In 2006 and to meet a huge increase in customer demand, the company
replaced this with the larger-format AXYZ 6010 and in 2020 supplemented this with the latest AXYZ Infinite 6010 to provide an enhanced production capacity that would not have been possible with a single machine. The AXYZ Infinite can be configured with a choice of single, dual or triple routing/cutting heads to accommodate varying application requirements. It is available in a choice of sizes and incorporates an expandable processing bed area of up to 3,251mm in width by an impressive 15.24m in length. Key design features include the familiar solid steel frame construction to withstand the most vigorous machine operation likely to be encountered and an aluminium t-slot vacuum material hold-down facility for optimum machining accuracy. These are supplemented with a new carriage design to enable easier routine maintenance and installation of future machine upgrades, an ultra-efficient dust extraction unit for enhanced machine performance and a new misting system to provide improved cooling and lubrication functions. Other optional production enhancements include the AVS (AXYZ Vision System) for optimum routing/cutting precision and the latest helical rack and pinion drive system. This incorporates a multi-teeth configuration that helps spread the workload more evenly, resulting in faster material throughput and reduced material wastage and ultimately a longer than normal machine life.

CABINET VISION Reduces Benzenberg Production Time By An Average Of Four Days
And ALPHACAM tackles their complex shapes and profiles While technology has advanced dramatically over the past century, the demand for quality woodworking products has remained unchanged. For 100-year-old Benzenberg Cabinets of Summerville, South Carolina, the need to remain competitive has meant embracing technologies that boost efficiency without sacrificing craftsmanship. “We’re able to offer our customers high quality and any custom products that they could want,” says Ed Benzenberg, General Manager of Benzenberg Cabinets. “We’ve done a lot of creative projects — from yacht interiors to motorised beds, televisions and spice racks. We never compromise in quality and design.” In order to standardise and increase production the company invested in the CABINET VISION Screen-to-Machine (S2M) Centre. Benzenberg works directly with homeowners, architects and interior designers, and offers comprehensive design services — including architectural shop drawings and 3D renderings produced with CABINET VISION, which comes from the Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence stable.

“With CABINET VISION, we probably save, on average, four days per job for an average-sized project — and that’s just in office time,” says Ed Benzenberg, who noted that an average job at his company typically includes 60-80 assemblies. “We’re able to produce a lot of work with 14 employees, and CABINET VISION is a big part of that. We found that implementation and ease of use were the major benefits of the software, compared to other systems we tried. It took just one week to get up to full production with the software.” While CABINET VISION is at the heart of the company’s cabinet production, Benzenberg uses Hexagon’s CAM solution, ALPHACAM, to tackle the company’s complex shapes and profiles, as well as other speciality parts. “We use ALPHACAM because it allows us to produce radius millwork, including radius panelling, as well as forms and jigs for different applications,” he says. “It’s very helpful for oneof-a-kind, unique shapes and custom projects.” The digital thread comprising the ALPHACAM and CABINET VISION communication framework that allows a connected data flow and integrated view of data throughout the design and production lifecycle, raising the bar for delivering the right information to the right place at the right time.
Case Study “We can essentially add intelligence to a part, assembly, or toolpath, and it adjusts automatically, based on the set parameters. If we add a piece and resize the cabinet’s width, it adjusts automatically. We save those pieces and assemblies and then reuse them later in other jobs, so it’s great for things we use on a regular basis that can then be slightly customised.” Once initial designs are complete, the company utilises the software’s ability to generate live drawings, making it easy to update projects as they progress from initial to final design stages. “Live drawings are a really nice feature, because we do a lot of high-end residential work, and designs often change weekly. This allows me to go in and change things without having to resubmit the drawing.”
To begin a project in CABINET VISION, Benzenberg enters the dimensions of the space in which the project will be installed, and then uses the system to design the cabinetry. Once the project is designed, cut lists, material lists, assembly sheets, and other vital job data can be generated, based on the design details. “The two main reasons we invested in CABINET VISION were to speed up the time it took to program all of the parts for an entire job, and to speed up the process of producing shop drawings and architectural drawings,” Ed Benzenberg says. “CABINET VISION does those two things at once.” Benzenberg are particularly keen on CABINET VISION’s powerful automation tool, User Created Standards (UCS), which enables them to customise the software to more efficiently fulfil demands specific to their shops. Using a basic programming language, UCSs can be written and applied to any process, specific cutting condition, or other unique requirement.
When it’s time to send jobs to the shop floor, Benzenberg takes advantage of the software’s powerful nesting engine, which optimises machine time and maximises material yield. “Once the drawings are signed off, just one click of a button sends 100 sheets to the machine to start cutting. Sheet stock is sent to two CNC routers for nesting and optimisation. We also have an optimising cut-off saw for all of the board stock, and CABINET VISION helps optimise that, too.” Keeping jobs organised on the shop floor as they make their way to assembly is made easier with the use of labels produced in CABINET VISION, concludes Ed Benzenberg. “The labels help the shop to know exactly what’s in front of them, and what they’re looking at. We include the assembly number, the part description, the dimensions of the part, and a picture of the part on the label.” T: +44 1189 756084 E: stewart.bint@hexagon.com
“We use a number of UCSs, including producing customised cut lists and building sheets for the shop. For us, they’re a way to increase CABINET VISION’s functionality, and customise it to really make it our own,” explains Ed Benzenberg. “I like to automate as many tasks as I can, so I’m essentially automating something that we would have to do manually.” CABINET VISION’s object intelligence, or parametric tool, cuts programming time by reusing existing programs saved to a design library. When a shop has a job that is identical or nearly identical to a former job in every detail except for size, it can apply the older design to a new job, adjust the dimensions, and even make further edits if necessary.
