News BWF Advice On UK Timber Regulations (UKTR) in England, Scotland and Wales. The BWF is urging its members and the wider woodusing industries to prepare for changes coming with the end of the Brexit transition period at the end of December. Currently, timber imported into the UK is governed by the European Timber Regulations (EUTR). From 1st January 2021 EUTR will be replaced with the UK Timber Regulations (UKTR) in England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland will remain subject to the European Timber Regulations, as set out in the Withdrawal Act and Northern Ireland Protocol. The requirements under the UK Timber Regulations are broadly similar to EUTR but with one significant difference. If a joinery business directly imports timber from the EU (receiving invoices for timber from a company based in the EU), it will now incur the responsibilities of an ‘Operator’ under the Regulations. Such companies will have to undertake due diligence to show that there is ‘negligible risk’ of the timber they import having been illegally harvested. This will affect larger companies who procure their own supplies of timber directly from producers in the EU. If you buy timber from a UK company who has already placed onto the British market timber originating from the EU, you will still have to undertake your own due diligence in terms of responsible timber sourcing, keeping records of who supplied the timber to you, and to whom you may sell it on in the form of finished products or components.
A free Due Diligence Toolkit, available to the whole wood supply chain, has been created by the Timber Trade Federation (TTF), BWF’s partners in the Confederation of Timber Industries, and the government’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office. The interactive guidance will help you understand the steps that everyone in the timber supply chain can take to create their own robust due diligence system. The Office for Product Safety & Standards, part of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, is the delivery body for the regulations and will continue in this role for both Northern Ireland and Great Britain. What does this mean for woodworking and joinery manufacturers? BWF members have a responsibility to ensure that the timber they source complies with current legislation. It’s crucial that members speak with their suppliers to ensure that they are confident that they are sourcing timber which complies with the new regulations. We are also urging members to check consistency of supply and pricing with their timber suppliers, especially for Q1 and Q2 of 2021. The BWF works closely with the TTF and, in the case of TTF members, under the TTF’s Responsible Purchasing Policy, Operators.
Obituary - Kevin Lovell Weinig UK has confirmed the sudden and unexpected death of their colleague Kevin Lovell who died peacefully in his sleep at home on Wednesday 22nd October aged 59. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues. During a long career in the industry, Kevin established himself as a respected and trusted Sales Manager with a depth and breath of knowledge that enabled him to provide invaluable advice to many companies in the UK. His legacy will live on for many years. Kevin was a private individual who genuinely enjoyed his life. Golf was an important part of his life outside of work and he often told that his handicap was in single figures – “well nearly” he would say with a wry smile so characteristic of his dry sense of humour. He was also an adventurous cyclist who took part in the London to Brighton Charity Run as part of a Weinig team. Kevin was an excellent photographer with a passion for capturing planes on the ground and in the air. The PJP team send Kevin’s family, friends and colleagues our sincere condolences.

News Why SterlingOSB Zero? Norbord’s portfolio of OSB products is one of the most popular in the building and interior design industries and comprises SterlingOSB Zero OSB3, SterlingOSB Zero Tongue and Groove, SterlingOSB Zero Fire Solutions and SterlingOSB Zero StrongFix. They are variants of the precision-engineered OSB3 board; BBA-approved and designed for humid conditions, the board contains zero added formaldehyde and is unique in the market by being the only ZAF OSB manufactured in the UK. Produced in Scotland from forest thinnings taken from sustainably managed forests, the board is certified according to the guidelines of the FSC or PEFC. The SterlingOSB Zero family from Norbord uses a formaldehyde free resin system to bind the thousands of strands that make up each board. SterlingOSB Zero is even more environmentally-friendly to produce than its predecessors. The pMDI binder cures at a lower temperature than UF/MUF resins so less heat energy is consumed during manufacture. It is also safer to produce since pMDI resin uses water as a catalyst in the curing process; UF/MUF resins need the addition of ammonium nitrate – an explosive chemical – to harden. What are the other benefits to those using Norbord panels - for housebuilding to furnituremaking and DIY to packaging? Nowadays, of course, availability and relative price stability are guaranteed. Transport costs are lower because the product doesn’t have to travel far which, in turn, leads to benefits for the environment. Never has the SHOP UK message been so relevant. Samples of SterlingOSB Zero and Norbord’s other construction panels can be ordered on the website: www.norbord.co.uk. Head to the new housebuilder page on the website to download a selection of tools including a fully-interactive guide to all Norbord products and a checklist to make sure you have everything you need for your build.

Hexagon Software Delivers Designer Handle-Less Cabinets & Adapts To Future Trends Software suite makes it easier for anyone to produce cabinets with shadowline finishes, streamlines door production and grows with woodworkers’ needs. New software from Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division enables cabinet makers and fitters to efficiently meet growing global demand for sleek and modern handle-less cabinetry. Building on 37 years of successful use by global woodworkers, the software has now been re-structured to make it easier and more cost effective for cabinet makers to start small and grow by only using the functionality they need.

Especially popular in Australia and Europe, the streamlined look and feel of handle-less cabinetry can be a significant challenge to produce efficiently using traditional construction methods. In the absence of handles or knobs, handle-less cabinets must be built with recessed channels to ensure that doors and drawers are easy to open. Designed to help woodworkers transition quickly from design to production, the CABINET VISION 2021 design-tomanufacturing suite simplifies the process of constructing handle-less, also known as shadowline, cabinets for any job. This new capability is now available to all CABINET VISION users, helping woodworkers respond to the current design

Profile “We have reimagined our suite to make it easier for new cabinet makers to get started and larger manufacturers to grow efficiently. When starting out, a new shop owner can simply pay for the core production elements they need, then build those capabilities as they diversify and grow. Meanwhile, larger sites can simply provide access to their staff based on their role – for example CAD drawings or 3D rendered walkthroughs for their design and salespeople. We’re putting customers’ needs first so new and established businesses benefit equally from access to our high quality tools and new capabilities, like the updated door manager and shadowline support,” Chip Martin, product manager for CABINET VISION.
trend while remaining competitive, and better able to retain and win business. Cabinet-door production comprises a significant portion of cabinetry work, and many cabinet shops maintain libraries of thousands of cabinet-door styles, making the task of finding and reusing door designs frustrating and time consuming. In response to this common challenge, a new Door Manager has been introduced, that enables users to manage all activities related to door production efficiently by maintaining a dynamic door database.
Hexagon has re-structured its software so that customers can build the design-to-manufacturing solution they need to meet the immediate demands of their business and eliminate the purchase of functions that are not required to achieve significant cost savings. Users begin by choosing to specialize in either cabinets or closets, which ensures that they receive the industry-specific tools needed for taking projects from engineering through to production. They can then build highly customised solutions by adding the tools they need to fulfil their broader business needs. Dubbed “multipliers,” these tools build upon, or multiply, the power of the core industry tools. Available multipliers include xRendering, which offers photorealistic rendering capabilities essential for sales opportunities and presentations, and xMachining, which includes the Screen-to-MachineTM solution used to produce the NC code that programs machines for production. Using Screen-to-Machine, NC code is generated for completed project designs with a few clicks of a mouse, and that code is sent to the CNC machinery that will cut the parts. The new software architecture is of significant benefit for users in need of two or more licenses. The flexibility to build custom solutions is especially helpful if two or more employees use the software for different functions and acquiring identical licenses would not be cost effective.

Adhesives Keeping Britain Bonded Since 1979 The name Kenyon is synonymous with adhesives since 1979 yet we glide under the radar of the multi-national competitors by delivering an impeccable service to the end user. We are a family company, with strong family values celebrating 40 plus years in the adhesive world. From our base in Oldham, Lancashire we supply the UK woodworking, furniture, caravan, insulation, mattress, window and door manufacturers with a range of high quality adhesives from Henkel under the tried, tested and proven brand names Technomelt and Aquence. What makes us stand out from the crowd? That’s simple: UK stock holding across 3 warehouses – no lead times – we deliver the goods when you need the goods – we put in the time and effort to ensure we help the customer achieve the best solution! I’m amazed at how many companies believe they are getting a good service from their incumbent adhesive supplier, yet the supplier dictates delivery; 7 days, 14 days and even 35 days! This makes the customer’s planning and inventory control difficult, to say the least. There’s nothing worse than a failed delivery – it stops production and costs money. With Kenyon’s our customers tell us when they want delivery and we will deliver!
Did you know we have our own range of D3 PVA adhesives? Did you know Technomelt 270-7 is also available in granules?
Proud to be Premium Partners for Henkel
Delivery is important, very important, but you have to back it up with a quality adhesive product, offer technical support / advice and solve adhesive problems.
Kenyon’s likes a challenge, we like to solve adhesive problems and we have solved many “sticky” problems over the years.
There’s little point in receiving the delivery on time if the adhesive doesn’t do what you require it to do! We tick all the boxes and don’t forget we are very competitive on price. However, in the current economical market we are seeing more and more that the delivered price doesn’t appear to be the dominant deal breaker. The importance has switched to the ability to deliver the right product at the right time. On time delivery normally now outweighs a few pence a kilo saving. It’s a proven fact, just ask any customer whose production line has been halted.
If you have an adhesive problem – challenge us! Customer service is a priority; when we solve a problem, even if we have to refer the customer to another supplier, a solution has been offered and the majority of the time customers remember the time and effort we put in to find the answer. Let the customer down and they will not forget! T: 0161 627 1001 E: salesteam@kenyon-group.co.uk www.kenyon-group.co.uk

Case Study Vollmer Is The Only Name On ‘The List’ Just one year before Great Lakes Custom Tool Manufacturing Inc. (GLCT) celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019, the Wisconsin based company was marking other milestones in its prestigious history with the opening of a 20,000 square foot factory extension and the arrival of five additional VOLLMER machines. For anyone who knows the Peshtigo business that was born out of a 1,700 square foot Quonset hut in the late 70’s, the rate of expansion and investment comes as no surprise. Founded by the current owner and ‘Head Coach’ Russ Martin, the journey has seen GLCT evolve from a small saw sharpening business to a custom tooling manufacturer and far beyond. As Vice President, co-owner, and son of the ‘Head Coach’, Ray Martin confirms: “Back in the early days we had to put anti-freeze down the toilets and through the plumbing to stop everything freezing up in the winter. Now, we have a 100,000 square foot factory that is fully temperature controlled all year round.” Like any successful ‘Head Coach’, Russ has developed both his team and business through the decades with a multitude of accolades and acquisitions that have set the company apart from its rivals. With State awards for Family Business of the Year, Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year, Governor’s New Product Award for Small Companies and Challengers Distinguished Achievement Award, GLCT has also expanded upon its success with acquisitions of Sonnet Tools, Paso Robles and AAA Precision Tool & Cutter Grinding Inc. The result is a business with more than 70,000 product items in its armory across the woodworking and metal cutting tool industry. Part of this product portfolio includes the Great-Loc® and Helicarb® technologies that have been developed and patented by GLCT. Add to this, the bespoke product solutions, re-manufacture and repair, expert service and support; and the product offering and service is certainly a cut above the competition. “The combination of products, service, support and the company culture of investing and innovation is why we have a broad customer base throughout North, Central and South America,” confirms Ray. With more than 80 staff, 50+ CNC machine tools, a multitude of manual machines and inspection and measuring technology, one brand that has lasted the distance is VOLLMER. As Ray continues: “We bought our first VOLLMER machine back in 1979 when we started and this was followed by a VOLLMER CHC22H saw grinder for face and top grinding in 1982. We then bought a manual side grinding machine in 1985 and this machine is still in service today for some of our repair work! It wasn’t until 1999 that we bought our next VOLLMER machine, a CX100 for top and face grinding of carbide-tipped circular saws.” OPENING THE DOORS TO INNOVATION Referring to the situation in the late 90’s Ray says: “At the time, we needed to get into the PCD tooling market. The woodworking industry was evolving rapidly with new composite materials coming through and the machine
14
Some of the VOLLMER machines at Great Lakes Custom Tool Manufacturing Inc. technology just wasn’t out there. Through the late 80s and early 90s we hadn’t bought any VOLLMER machines, in honesty, the service wasn’t there at that period – but ‘Wow’ has that changed! We put our faith in VOLLMER in 1999, as we didn’t have anywhere else to turn from a technology standpoint – their machines were streets ahead of anything else in the industry. The technology was matched by the service and since the turn of the century, we have added two CHD270 machines, a DES300, a CHF270 and CHF840, a CHC840 and even the ND250 robotic loading system.” With average saw blade order quantities ranging from 4 to 6-off and even up to 20 & 50, the VOLLMER TCT machines are producing a substantial quantity of new saw blades every week; with an additional large quantity of saw service, regrind and repair volumes passing through the company as well. PCD CHANGES THE GAME Back in the early 2000s, the woodworking market was evolving in terms of material and tool technology, so after the success of the VOLLMER CX100 in 1999, GLCT installed its first QWD wire erosion machine in 2002 for processing PCD cutting tools - the QWD750. As Ray recalls: “Our customer base for PCD tools grew at a slow and steady pace for a number of years, but it was certainly the QWD750 that changed the game for us. We added a second VOLLMER wire erosion machine, the QWD755 in 2004. The first QWD750 machine offered us all the capacity we needed, but we bought a second QWD as a ‘just-in-case’ machine, as we developed a steady customer base and subsequently reliance on our QWD750, so the second machine was ‘back-up’. During this period, we acquired Sonnet Tool and the exclusive rights to Helicarb® which coincided with our diversification into the metal-cutting market. By 2009, the move into the metalworking industry and the growing demand in the woodworking sector had increased our PCD tooling business by 6 times.” The productivity of the two VOLLMER QWD wire erosion machines carried the capacity of increased business until
Panel & Joinery Production - November / December 2020
Case Study 2014. As Ray states: “By 2014, demand for our PCD tools was stretching our QWD machines, so we installed a 6-axis QXD250 disc erosion machine. Unlike the QWD machines, the QXD enabled automated production of tools up to 320mm diameter and it was installed with the HC5 loading system that can accommodate up to 28 tools.” The automation facility of the HC5 loading system enables the QXD250 to manufacture PCD tools unmanned; and depending upon the complexity of the tools, the QXD250 can run for days without operator intervention. With GLCT realizing the benefits of VOLLMER automation systems, the QXD250 was followed in 2015 by yet another QWD machine, this time it was the QWD750H with a 12-tool pallet system. As part of the investment drive, GLCT also invested in the VOLLMER QM Eco disc erosion machine for PCD tools. Commenting on this, Ray recalls: “We had invested in the QWD and QXD machines and they delivered significant success for our business, but we then needed another machine and we felt another QWD would have been ‘too big a gun’ for our needs. We had built our PCD business up with the QWD, but as an efficient, productive and cost-effective solution, the QM Eco was the perfect fit.” The acquisition of the QXD250 with HC5 loading, the QWD750H and QM Eco provided the production capacity to support the growth trajectory that GLCT witnessed concerning its PCD cutting tool business for both the metal cutting and woodworking industries, but only for a short while. CONTINUED GROWTH TRAJECTORY With plans afoot for a factory extension and production capacity bulging at the seams, Ray went out to auction and bought another VOLLMER QWD750 to alleviate capacity concerns whilst placing orders for more machines. As soon as the 20,000 square foot factory expansion was completed in 2020, the new machine orders started arriving to fill the space and provide much-needed production capacity. As Ray continues: “It hasn’t just been VOLLMER machines arriving here. We now have numerous CNC machines alongside the VOLLMER’s and we have invested heavily in supporting equipment and tooling that ensures we have the very latest technology to give our customers the finest quality and service possible.”

The VOLLMER machines that arrived at the factory in 2018 included a QM110 disc erosion machine for PCD tools, a QF270 for machining the tooth sides of PCD-tipped circular saws via disc erosion and the arrival of the company’s first VPulse500 wire erosion machine with the HR external workpiece storage system for automated loading of up to 16 tools. As the successor to the longstanding QWD range of wire erosion machines from VOLLMER, the product improvements and in particular the VPulse erosion generator technology have certainly been noticed by GLCT. “The VPulse generator has made this new machine at least 20% more productive than the existing QWD machines. In addition, the surface finishes on our cutting tools are even better than before. Furthermore, the new-look machine has the latest VOLLMER ExProg programming system integrated to provide an intuitive user interface that offers both ease of use and a simulation system for checking edges and geometries to save time and eliminate human error. It really is a fantastic machine.” WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? Whilst none of us can see into the future, one thing for certain is that GLCT will continue its path to success. The company has invested heavily and wisely in both its staff and technology and the German brand of machine tools has played a significant role for the company nestled on the side of Lake Michigan. Whilst business for GLCT has been impacted throughout the COVID pandemic, like most businesses, the company has still retained the foresight to invest - installing its 19th VOLLMER machine, a QR270 erosion machine for processing the tooth tops of PCD-tipped circular saw blades. Concluding on the relationship with VOLLMER, Ray says: “When it comes to manufacturing PCD cutting tools and saw blades – VOLLMER is ‘our go-to’. As well as investing in all these machines, we also bought the VOLLMER VGrind 360 for our sister company AAA Precision Tool & Cutter Grinding LLC. Bought for grinding carbide tools, the two vertically aligned spindles have made a big difference to our productivity and surface finishes at AAA. So, whether it’s circular saws, TCT or PCD saws, solid carbide or PCD tipped tools from rod, VOLLMER has it covered. We wouldn’t even think of looking anywhere else – and we wouldn’t need to.” For further information on Great Lakes Custom Tool Mfg., Inc: https://glct.com/ www.vollmer-group.com

Even large and demanding surfaces can be given the look of marble with the 6 high gloss marble decors of SibuGlas
Ostermann Has The Answer For Any Application If you plan to create walls or furniture with a cuttingedge stone or concrete look, you will find many surfaces at Ostermann that will help you implement the trend with an impressively realistic solid appearance. Not everything that looks like stone or concrete necessarily has to be solid; alternative solutions are equally suited to create a cutting-edge solid look. Ostermann offers many different materials for a wide range of applications. Acrylic Surfaces with Shiny Marble Optics The marble decors from the SibuGlas product line transform wood materials into an illusion of solid, polished marble surfaces. This effect is achieved by backing acrylic glass surfaces with photorealistic decors, creating a unique depth effect and thereby a deceptively real illusion. Boards can be delivered with either an untreated or a self-adhesive rear side. When the surface is subject to higher exposure, as for example in horizontal applications, it is recommended to select a scratch-resistant AR+ variant, which is available at Ostermann, as well.
RollBeton - Concrete on a Roll Flexible decors on rolls by Ostermann are developing into a classic in shopfitting, fair stand construction, furniture making and interior design. RollBeton is delivered in light-weight, easy-to process rolls, and still has a finish coating containing real concrete. The material’s processing properties make it easy to cover furniture and walls, or even create stunning designer pieces. Comprehensive Sample Service Ostermann’s diversity of stone look surfaces is enormous, which is why the edging specialist offers an extensive sample service that will help you make your choice: all mentioned materials and decors are also available as samples. Biomass Heating Ashley Ann Kitchens Appoint AFS Biomass For New Factory Heating System Yet another successful biomass system installation from the highly respected AFS Biomass. With strong business growth, Ashley Ann Kitchens in Wick took over an adjacent factory for production, warehousing and despatch. The front of building boasted a large office suite and showroom. The entire building was previously heated using LPG which would have been prohibitively expensive and went against the company’s aim of being as eco-friendly as possible. AFS Biomass were recommended to Managing Director, Steve Bremner, who needed a modern, efficient and robust biomass boiler system which was accredited to burn the manufacturing residue including sawdust, shavings, offcuts and packaging. “A highly professional, quality led organisation that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend,” said Steve. AFS Biomass recommended the Gilles HPKI-R Industrial Boiler, with heat distributed throughout the factory, warehouse and despatch from overhead multi-directional fan coil radiators. The offices and showroom were connected via a plate heat exchanger to the existing radiator system.
In addition to huge savings from burning free wood fuel against the cost of LPG, further savings were created against the previous cost of disposal of that waste. Yet another bonus is the fact that the biomass boiler is accredited to the Government RHI scheme, (Renewable Heat Incentive), designed to reward businesses that contribute to the UK’s carbon reduction targets. Payable for 20 years for all the metered, eligible heat generated from biomass, it provides a very welcome additional income stream. However, The RHI scheme will end for new applicants on 31st March 2021. It is therefore vital to move quickly to avoid missing out on this extremely valuable incentive. Be rewarded today for adopting biomass heating or be penalised tomorrow through ever increasing carbon taxes for sticking with fossil fuels. AFS Biomass is leading the way in the promotion and implementation of all forms of biomass energy generation. As one of the few Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers in the UK, AFS Biomass offers the design, installation and ongoing maintenance to many diverse sectors, including furniture and kitchen manufacturers, sawmills, pallet companies and more. References are available on request from a large number of highly satisfied clients.
So why choose a biomass heating system: •
Savings against current fossil fuel costs, which continue to rise.
•
Wood waste disposal savings - create energy from waste rather than pay for its removal.
•
Mitigate against future carbon taxes.
•
Enhance green credentials - claim carbon neutrality for heating.
•
Eligible for the Government RHI scheme (Renewable Heat Incentive).

Case Study
Alphacam CNC Fræser
Alphacam Brings Viking History To Life
5-axis machining for complex, authentic furniture designs ALPHACAM software played a major role in a unique museum project showing how Danish Kings lived around 1,300 years ago. The Royal Hall – part of the Sagnlandet Lejre, or Lejre, Land of Legends archeological centre – needed around 25 pillars, doors, tables and benches to be faithful representations of how furniture looked at that time. Woodworking subcontractor Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri was tasked with manufacturing the furniture, and worked closely with ALPHACAM’s reseller in Denmark, Østjydsk CAD-CAM, to ensure the finished products were totally authentic.
Overall, Lejre, Land of Legends is a 106-acre archaeological open-air museum established in 1964 at Lejre, near the city of Roskilde in Denmark. It recreates typical Viking buildings showing living conditions and technologies used by the population as well as buildings from the Stone Age up to the 1800s. Its main attraction is now The Royal Hall from the Viking Age, which measures 61 metres x 12 metres, x 10 metres high, and the reconstruction is based on the biggest building from Danish prehistory being excavated in 2009. More than 150 trees, between 130 and 210 years old, have been used
Lars Holten, Director and CEO of Sagnlandet Lejre, says: “We aim to give our visitors an understanding of past life and architecture based on well-researched archaeological, iconographical and written sources. So, it was very important that our reconstruction of architecture and ornamentation was made accurately, with respect to the originals.” He says Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri’s “innovative” use of ALPHACAM, made those aims achievable, through costeffective advanced woodcarving carried out on modern machinery, which was hand finished by woodcarver Sanne Marie Seipelt. The items were cut to tolerances of +/- 0.3 mm, on a CMS Ares and Fanuc Robodrill, through surface machining and full 5-axis simultaneous strategies, using toolpaths programmed and verified with ALPHACAM Ultimate.
28
Panel & Joinery Production - November / December 2020
Case Study for the full construction project. Among these “Navy Oak” trees which the King of Denmark ordered to be planted in 1809 after Britain took over the Danish Navy in 1807, so the country could build a new Navy. As ships are no longer built of wood, it was felt the trees would be ideal for this latest phase of the Sagnlandet Lejre project. As well as the range of furniture and ornaments in the Royal Hall which were cut with ALPHACAM toolpaths, the software was also used to program the carving of highly intricate designs into four sacred high-seat pillars which support the roof. The pillars are each eight-metres tall, decorated with complex motifs from Nordic mythology, showing the Nordic Gods Thor, Odin, Frej, and Freya. The decorations were created by the museum, based on original designs found in graves and excavations in Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Bystrup Maskinsnedkeri received them as STEP files, which were imported into ALPHACAM. The designs sank into the wood to a depth of 25mm, and were machined with small ball nose cutters, which were required to achieve the necessary detail. Managing Director Niels Bystrup made his first move into the world of CNC machining with the CMS Ares 6018 and ALPHACAM Ultimate around five years ago, and expanded his workshop’s capability with the Fanuc Robodrill, which is used mainly for machining smaller components. The company handles all types of CNC contract machining and
product development of stairs, doors and furniture, in materials such as Oak, Pine, Douglas, Ash, Beech, Mahogany, MDF and Sika Block. They worked closely with Karl Erik Andersen, of Østjydsk CAD-CAM, on the best processes to produce the parts, how to program them, and which tooling to use. Niels Bystrup says: “I think the pillars and pieces of furniture we’ve made for this project will last 1,000 years – and we’re delighted and honoured to have been part of it.” The Royal Hall, which was officially opened by Sagnlandet Lejre’s patron, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, recently won the prestigious “Carpenter Award 2020” from the Copenhagen Carpenters Guild.

New Date For LINGA.21 LIGNA.21 goes into autumn, postponing its original event date from May to 27 September to 1 October 2021. Following intensive reflections and discussions, and in view of the current developments in the global incidence of infections in the wake of the corona pandemic, Deutsche Messe and the German association VDMA have jointly decided to postpone LIGNA by around five months next year. “Due to the ongoing pandemic, increasing restrictions and the renewed lockdown, there is great uncertainty in the market. We take this very seriously,” emphasizes Dr. Andreas Gruchow, Deutsche Messe Managing Board member. “The decision to postpone LIGNA was a very difficult one for us, but it is the only consistent measure to give all those involved planning security and the necessary lead time for preparations. The corresponding hygiene and protection concept is in place, and with the staging of our event infa now in October, it has also been proven in practice that events in pandemic times can be held safely. At LIGNA, we have to take into account that entire machine parks are designed, assembled and presented in live operation with a long lead time and at great expense. This requires trade show planning that takes many months. This can only be achieved in conjunction with a sufficient number of international decision-makers on the visitor side. To ensure that LIGNA, the world’s leading trade show for the sector, can live up to this expectation, suppliers and users alike
30
must be given sufficient planning security for participation and this is significantly higher for September/October than for May 2021”. As co-organizer of LIGNA, the VDMA also sees the postponement of the event date as the only effective means of successfully staging the world’s most important trade show for the international wood industry in the interests of all participants.

Masterwood Second Hand Machines Since moving to our new premises, we have been able to deal directly in second hand Masterwood CNC machines. When we take in machines as trade-ins from existing customers, we usually have the full-service history and can have one of our experienced technicians give them a through overhaul. We take great care to ensure all second-hand machines sold by Masterwood GB are in good working condition, with full safety regulations, so they continue working for many more years. We currently have two second hand long bed machines in our workshop; a project 400L and an Atlas KL, with more due to be available in the coming months. As well as second-hand machines, we also have showroom demo machines available, all under 6 months old, but still with a full year’s warranty from Masterwood Spa from the time of installation. These will be available at discounted prices and a fast delivery time. The current range of showroom machines includes… A Project 385L – A full 5 Axis, long bed CNC with a vertical and horizontal drilling head. Feature Wet Weather? Use Cabershieldplus & “Fit And Forget” Says Cartwood UK When Horsham-based construction, renovation and oak framing company Cartwood UK was ordering materials for its latest project, merchant D W Nye Ltd of Kingsfold, Horsham suggested trying Norbord’s CaberShieldPlus.
CaberShieldPlus is a P5 flooring protected on both sides with a tough, waterproof coating. It is BBA approved for 60 days’ exposure to the weather when used with CaberFix D4 adhesive.
Peter Woodley, co-owner of Cartwood, certainly wasn’t disappointed with the results! “It is the first time we have used a fully waterproof system like this on our developments. We were impressed with the versatility of the product and how easy it is to use. It handles well and there are no fussy storage requirements for the sheets prefitting. It cut nicely with a circular saw and fitted together without issue using CaberFix D4 adhesive,” said Peter.
Samples of CaberShieldPlus and Norbord’s other construction panels can be ordered on the website: www. norbord.co.uk. Head to the new housebuilder page on the website to download a selection of tools including a fullyinteractive guide to all Norbord products and a checklist to make sure you have everything you need for your build.

Cartwood used CaberShieldPlus over the entire first floor level at a property development in West Sussex and, as is all too common in the UK, the construction company was challenged with the usual rainstorms. “We had experienced extreme rainfall over the whole floor but we were really pleased it has dried without any signs of failure”, commented Peter. So impressed was Cartwood that CaberShieldPlus will be used on all future developments and refurbishments. “We will not be using another product due to its effectiveness. Just fit and forget it!” said Peter.

Feature The Next Generation Of Angle Grinding Makita has launched four new 40V brushless angle grinder models as part of its exciting new XGT range Makita’s new, powerful cordless 40V lithium-ion battery platform, affording users with high levels of power for demanding jobs with the flexibility and portability of cordless. For professional use in high demand industrial applications, the new brushless angle grinders are engineered to deliver the power and performance of a corded machine, without the hassles and restrictions of a cord. With the equivalent power of a 1,100W corded grinder and a no load speed of 8,500rpm, the new products feature fast and easy angle adjustment with a toolless guard system to help make working more efficient and convenient.
The new grinders have been designed to ensure long term durability in challenging environments, with large bearings that support the motor and a new switch design to reduce contact wearing. The soft start function also works to suppress start-up reaction, so start-ups are smoother and the gear life is prolonged. For ease of operation, the side handle can be adjusted for left or right-hand use, depending on operator preference or workspace. In addition, the brushless motor optimises battery use resulting in long run-times per charge - and efficiently uses energy to match torque and RPM to the changing demands of the application. And since there are no carbon brushes, a brushless motor runs cooler and more efficiently for longer life.
The new XGT 40V Max GA005G and GA004G Angle Grinders operate with a slide switch and with 125mm and 115mm wheel diameter options respectively. The new XGT 40V Max GA013G Angle Grinder with 125mm wheel diameter and the GA012G Angle Grinder with 115mm wheel diameter are both operated with a paddle switch function.
Kevin Brannigan, Marketing Manager at Makita UK said: “The new 40V angle grinders offer high power and performance for continuous heavy-duty cutting and grinding, all fuelled by our new XGT battery platform with efficient charging and battery power that can genuinely stand up to the toughest of jobs.
With enhanced safety in mind, the low vibration grinders include an electric brake and Makita’s Active Feedback sensing Technology (AFT) turns the motor off if the rotation speed suddenly slows or if the wheel is forced to stop. Furthermore, the anti-restart function prevents accidental motor start-up when a battery is inserted with the switch locked on and the new push guard system provides operators with seven pre-set positions ready to use straight away.
“Makita continues to invest and innovate in technology and equipment that makes working easier for professionals. The new 40V XGT battery platform stands side-by-side with our industry-leading 18V LXT system and we are delighted to offer professionals with a wider choice of battery-powered solutions for a truly cordless job site.” For further information: www.makitauk.com

Profile Remain, Relocate or Consolidate? Filtermist Crystal
Thermal Oxidiser for TCL Packaging when the company relocated to Stafford Park Industrial Estate, Telford. “As with the design and installation of any extraction system, a number of factors need to be considered when relocating equipment. The location of the plant, the physical size of the existing equipment, and its suitability to meet current performance requirements, as well as regulatory compliance, all have a bearing on system design to make sure extraction is at least as effective at the new site as it was at the old.” Relocating can also be the ideal time to invest in a more efficient and cost-effective extraction system, as Andy Hives, Divisional Sales Director (Dust), explains, “Extraction equipment today is far more efficient than in older installations, so it can often make sense to take the opportunity relocation presents and invest in a completely new system.
Many businesses are scrutinising their operations to identify potential changes to help them survive the current economic climate, and ultimately thrive in a post-Covid world. Some organisations have reorganised factory layouts to improve workflow, or simply to manage social distancing. Others have consolidated operations to achieve efficiencies, whilst some have invested in more efficient machinery to speed up production, and a few have taken the opportunity to relocate; along with their existing extraction system.
“Modern fans can achieve significant efficiencies, and improvements in filter media over the years have also had a noticeable effect on overall efficiency. Over time, additions to ducting runs can reduce overall performance; looking at it with a fresh pair of eyes, a redesign of the ductwork system will ensure extraction is operating as efficiently as possible. And, whether retrofitted as an upgrade or installed as part of a new system, incorporating Ecogate® technology can reduce energy consumption by up to 75%.”

As a Clean Air Partner to many leading manufacturers, Filtermist Systems has supported numerous customers with reconfiguration of their extraction systems. This often involves the straightforward addition of ductwork to provide extraction for a new machine, or reinstallation of existing ductwork to fit a new factory layout which, in some cases, has also included installation of stand-alone filter units to extract from specific machines. When relocating to new premises, Filtermist’s experienced team will ensure that dust or fume extraction is one element of the move a business won’t need to worry about. Filtermist’s sales engineers will survey both sites and submit proposals for implementing the most efficient and cost-effective extraction solution at the new location, including the development of strategic plans for the move and installation. Filtermist’s Systems Sales Manager, Kevin Hood, elaborates, “We’ve worked with customers in a wide range of industries to ensure their extraction equipment is removed from the old premises and reinstalled safely and effectively at the new location. Projects have included the relocation of dust and fume extraction equipment for Federal-Mogul Motorparts’ Friction Products manufacturing plant, in Derbyshire, and installation of new ductwork for a Regenerative
Burbidge Ecogate®
Filtermist undertake energy audits on existing systems to identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce extraction running costs. “Even if the current economic situation means a move isn’t on the cards, many firms are still looking to increase efficiency and reduce overheads,” continues Andy Hives, “and installing an Ecogate® system can pay for itself in as little as two years through lower electricity bills. Ecogate® reduces running costs by monitoring each individual machine, in real-time, and constantly adjusts extraction fan speeds to match demand. Filtermist’s extraction experts will be only too happy to help if you are looking to reduce your running costs – whether you’re staying put or relocating your business.” Relocation is often the key driver for investment in new dust or fume extraction, and Filtermist’s website features numerous case studies of companies that have chosen this route. Just one example is vinyl wrapped doors and furniture manufacturer Crystal Doors – still reaping the benefits of an installation completed in 2017 and obviously continuing to do so for the foreseeable future, as Managing Director, Richard Hagan, recently commented, “It’s the best and will last 20 years plus. Sorry to say, but once installed you can just forget the dust extractor!”
