Tribute A Warm Welcome Back To Panel & Joinery Production We are very pleased to be back and this issue is particularly important to us as it is dedicated to the memory of Ernie Hollister, Founder and Publisher of Panel & Joinery Production, who passed away suddenly in March. The PJP team would like to thank our contributors, advertisers, readers and colleagues for their patience and support while we took a break to deal with our loss and to regroup post lockdown. It will never be the same without Ernie - he has left us with big boots to fill but we are determined to continue with the legacy he left us in the form of Panel & Joinery Production.

A Life Well Lived Ernie Hollister (30/9/41 - 31/3/20) It is with deep regret and sadness that we say farewell to Ernie Hollister. Everyone who knew Ernie has been profoundly shocked and saddened by his sudden death. Although affected by health issues for most of his life he never let them define him or his life which he lived to the full – he will be remembered for his big smile, infectious laugh, warmth, kindness, generosity and humour; qualities that live on in his much loved sons, Sam and Tom. Born during the Second World War, Ernie experienced austerity and hardship but was never one to bemoan his fate and he would regale family and friends with outrageously entertaining stories of growing up in post war Islington. Family circumstances meant he left school at 15 putting a halt to his creative career ambitions but after working for large publishing houses for many years he decided to go out on his own and in 1997 Panel & Joinery Production was born. He was a much loved and respected character in the industry - love for his work and the people he met kept him active and working until the day he died. Ernie was a victim of COVID-19. Respiratory issues meant he was unable to overcome it despite fighting to the end. He died peacefully at Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, with Clare by his side, cared for with dignity and compassion by the most exceptional and caring NHS staff. Ernie’s family plan to celebrate his life when circumstances change and his family, friends and colleagues can all get together. They have set up a ‘Just Giving’ page in his memory for East Kent Hospitals Charity to support and thank those who selflessly provide front line care at the NHS. https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/erniehollister

News The Next Xylexpo Event Will Be In 2022 The Board of Cepra-Centro promozionale Acimall have taken the decision that it is impossible to organize Xylexpo in 2020 so the next date for exhibitors and visitors will be in 2022”. Cepra communicated the non-existence of objective conditions to organize the 2020 edition of Xylexpo, Biennial world exhibition for woodworking technology and furniture supplies, with an official letter to all exhibitors signed by President Lorenzo Primultini on July 6, 2020.

constant monitoring of all the conditions required to offer a successful exhibition have clearly shown that the situation in November will not be favorable. Consequently Xylexpo is postponed to 2022: the exhibition team is already working to design a Xylexpo event that takes into account new ideas and recent changes to create a new and more modern “digital oriented” showcase, deploying a strategy that will be supported with proposals and initiatives in the coming months.

AAG Adds A New Dimension To Online Product Sourcing & Training Leading supplier of high-performance CNC routing, cutting and engraving machines to a wide range of disparate industries, AAG (AXYZ Automation Group) has completed a radical revamp of its 24/7 CNCShop e-commerce division. Significantly, this now includes the WARDJet range of waterjet cutting systems, accessories and spare parts that followed acquisition of North America-based WARDJet by AAG’s parent company in Canada.

Adding a new dimension to these capabilities is the access that customers now have to bespoke product training courses and machine maintenance programmes. These can be conducted either by remote diagnostics or, if required, on-site visits by an AAG application engineer. Further support is available through links to videos of AXYZ and WARDJet machines being demonstrated in a production environment, with interaction possible with a CNC machine specialist.

The new CNCShop site has a fresh and vibrant look that reflects the constantly evolving CNC industry and its ability to enable increased automation in workplace settings. AAG customers now benefit from much faster and easier remote access to a continually expanding range of essential spare parts, accessories and consumables for both traditional AXYZ CNC routing/cutting and WARDJet waterjet cutting systems. This is attributable to a more streamlined page navigation capability via advanced search filters, fast access to and renewal of previous orders and the ability of customers to speak with a member of the AAG technical support team to ensure the selected products are the most appropriate for a given application. Collectively, these will enable customers to maximise the performance capabilities of and the investment made in any machine supplied by AAG.

The CNCShop site is clearly segmented to cover the widest range of routing, cutting and engraving tools, accessories, spare parts and consumables likely to be required. These include high-quality router bits, collets and cones to accommodate different types of high-speed routing spindle, oscillating and tangential knife-cutting units and a sensor to enhance the performance capabilities of waterjet cutting machines. Notable special-purpose tools include a compression device for processing difficult materials such as laminates and composite woods, a diamond cutting tool for the perfect edge-finishing of acrylic and plastics and long reach tools for foam and similar soft materials. Events Huge Success For High Technology In Action At The “SCM Live Show” More than 4000 “on-line” guests from 100 countries took part in the live streaming event from 30 June to 2 July. Presentations and in-depth discussions with SCM experts on the latest technological new entries dedicated to the entire wood industry. As an indication of just how the Nuremberg Event which A television show with more than 24 hours of original content broadcast in live streaming world-wide in nine languages, spread across three days to present the latest 2020 technologies that should have “taken to the stage” at the various international trade fairs that have been postponed or cancelled since last February due to the Covid-19 health emergency. A genuine challenge for SCM, the multinational group with its main headquarters in Rimini, leader in the wood machining industry since 1952. With the “SCM Live Show” event, SCM has decided to use innovative multimedia channels and tools to “open the doors” of its headquarters in Italy, via web, to thousands of customers from all over the world. SCM “brings” the new machines and industrial plants for the entire wood machining industry, directly into customers own home: from the furniture industry to windows and doors and from the construction industry to artisan businesses. The “Corporate headquarters” in Rimini and the group’s other production sites around Italy were transformed into television studios to achieve the vast show schedule of live linkups, webinars and talk shows. Thirty product webinars saw more than fifty technological solutions take centre stage to represent the vast range of SCM products and services starting with the Smart&Human Factory, the well-known human-friendly digital factory for the furniture industry. SCM’s eighteen directly managed branches operating on the most strategic markets in the wood industry around the world, in

Events Europe, Asia, the Middle East, America and Oceania were also involved with live link-ups. The response from industry businesses was even better than expected, if we look at the access data to the streaming platform set up by SCM for the occasion: over 4,000 registrations from one hundred countries on every continent, with an average daily audience of 1,500 individual viewers. The same customers who enrolled took part actively, constantly using the various channels made available during the event to interact with SCM experts and discuss the latest products and key industry trends. This is clear from the hundreds of in-depth questions on the various technologies that were asked as well as contact requests via the streaming platform during the live broadcast and from which important opportunities have arisen. This is followed up by specific visits to customers from the SCM sales team. The event content is still available on the platform and contacts from clients all over the world, looking for more in-depth information and new appointments continue to arrive. The commitment in terms of human resources was also considerable. More than fifty professionals hired for this unique “digital trade fair” including cameramen, technicians, writers, director and presenter. More than one hundred SCM employees involved in the preparation and creation of the show. T: 0115 9770044 www.scmwood.com

During the event, we received invaluable participation from some of our long-standing SCM customers such as Maurizio Riva, owner of a “Made in Italy” and that of Riva1920 from Cantù (Como), who supplied the exclusive design furnishings for the television studio in Rimini during the event.

HOMAG Breaks Into HMP Dartmoor With MOULDTEQ M-300 HMP Dartmoor is committed to providing a safe and educational environment where men can learn new skills to help them on release. The prison offers a wide range of vocational opportunities for the residents including furniture manufacture. “When prisoners first arrive they have a two-week induction during which we discuss their education, employment history and the type of work they’re able to do whilst with us,” explains Ben Fisher, industries manager at HMP Dartmoor. He continues, “Those with experience of the furniture industry or who appear to have a natural affinity or skill level are selected for the furniture workshop. “The workshop is run independently by Public Sector Prison Industries (PSPI). It produces finished goods for the internal prison market and other government departments. At Dartmoor this includes high volumes of timber frames for easy recreational chairs.” “Previously, we have manufactured these using a number of machines including planers and mortisers. The PSPI, however, wanted to improve productivity and decided to invest in a moulding machine. As you can imagine, procurement procedures for prisons are demanding so it is testament to HOMAG that the PSPI decided to invest in its MOULDTEQ M-300 model.”

8

STATE-OF-THE-ART TECHNOLOGY The MOULDTEQ M-300 features variable feed and spindle speeds. From the second spindle onwards speeds vary from 4,000 to 8,000 rpm providing optimal workpiece quality, with each spindle driven by its own motor providing the ideal power transmission. Machine operation is via HOMAG’s intuitive powerTouch screen which makes tasks straightforward and quick to learn. Its proLock spindle clamping system enables quick and easy tool changes whilst the adjustable pneumatic top feed rollers provide optimum contact pressure for different profiles and wood types. The cast iron machine frame enables high precision production with minimum vibration and it can handle workpieces from 300 mm in length upwards. Each workpiece is automatically guided through the machine by the heavy duty feed drive system and held in place by the pressure rollers. HOMAG’s MOULDTEQ M-300 also features a hardened chromed feeding table for long life. TRAINING THE TRAINERS Ben Fisher again, “One of the challenges we have at HMP Dartmoor is training the men on the machines. It is important, therefore, that our two experienced in-house instructors get first-class training on any new equipment.

Panel & Joinery Production - September / October 2020

Case Study

The intelliMoulding App

With HOMAG that’s not an issue; the training it provides is excellent. Our instructors went to Castle Donington for this and are now able to train our men at the prison.” “I’m not a woodworking specialist, but I do know that compared to the other equipment we have, the MOULDTEQ M-300 is in another league. It will deliver several benefits to the prison and PSPI.” “Firstly, it will significantly improve our ability to produce quality finished goods in volume. Secondly, it will upskill the workforce, improving operators understanding of modern manufacturing methods and better equipping them for the outside world. “The other stand-out feature for me is the relationship with HOMAG. I’m an ex-military man and was fairly new in the post when the decision was made to invest in the MOULDTEQ. From the outset, Stuart Hinds, one of HOMAG’s installation team, has been fantastic. Nothing has been too much trouble; he has gone out of his way to explain how everything works, from the procurement and delivery process through to installation.” “The pre-installation team recommended we had the floor in the workshop load tested to ensure it met requirements prior to machine delivery. On inspection remedial work was recommended, so I obtained quotes for the work. “When the quotes came back at around £4,000 I called Stuart to ask his advice. Without hesitation he expressed his concern and said that on his next visit he

would sort it for us which he subsequently did at no charge. “It’s the personal touches like this which make all the difference in a relationship. I’ve had to put my trust firmly in the people at HOMAG and each has given me the feeling that they are listening and doing what’s right for HMP Dartmoor, rather than trying to feather their own nests. “When the machine was delivered I sent emails to both the delivery company and HOMAG to thank them for their professionalism. I don’t do that sort of thing lightly so it speaks volumes for HOMAG. Stuart keeps in touch, ringing me now and then to make sure everything is in order. This level of service is unusual in this day and age,” concludes Ben Fisher. Contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK T: 01332 856424

Software CABINET VISION Reduces Former Two-Day Process To Minutes Software “Vital” For High-End Kitchen Firm To Offer Their Bespoke Service “If you’ve got both CABINET VISION and ALPHACAM, there’s absolutely nothing you can’t make.” Those are the words of Mick Cotter, Director of Cumbria Kitchen and Bedroom Furniture. Offering a high end bespoke service and products, the company deals mainly with end-user customers within a few miles of their native Carlisle. Having recently celebrated their tenth anniversary of using CABINET VISION, he says the business couldn’t offer “anything like” the service they do, if they didn’t have the software. “It enables us to adapt and change every unit in a matter of seconds, to create something bespoke that we’ve never made before.” For example, he can readily design a unit that will go around a vent, or a kitchen boiler with a considerable amount of associated pipework. “Before we had CABINET VISION that would take one person a couple of days to mark everything out and drill the holes. Now I can design that same unit in CABINET VISION literally in two minutes.” With thousands of components required for a large kitchen, he describes CABINET VISION’s nesting feature as “allimportant in taking away the thought process in the factory” as the machine simply produces every part on the sheet, accurately drilling every hole and routing every groove, meaning it is almost a finished unit coming off the CNC. “The only time we need to change the orientation of an individual part on the nest is when we’re using a real wood veneer and the component we’re making is longer than the sheet. We may need to change the orientation to match the two boards.”

12

Currently they perform that task using ALPHACAM, which came already installed on their pre-owned original CNC machine 13 years ago. “At the time that was our first experience of CAD/CAM, and although we knew about CABINET VISION I wanted to take it one step at a time. But if I was making that decision today, and knowing what I know now, we’d invest in CABINET VISION immediately. It’s completely changed the way we operate. We’d have struggled to keep the company afloat during the global financial crisis that began in 2008 if we’d still been using the old time-consuming processes.” The company manufacture everything themselves; carcases, doors, drawer boxes and worktops, apart from granite. Being at the high-end of the market they specialise in moisture-resistant MDF with either a laminate surface on to a carcase – and all exposed décor would be painted, or sprayed MDF – or matching wood veneer on MDF. Everything is bespoke – they don’t have a catalogue of any sort. “We can literally make units of all shapes, heights, widths and depths…and any colour,” says Mick Cotter. All their carcases, drawer boxes and solid surface Staron worktops are produced with either CABINET VISION or ALPHACAM – ALPHACAM mainly for one-off solid wood products that don’t go through a nest; and it machines the drawer boxes from cutlists created in CABINET VISION. Door cutlists are also produced in CABINET VISION, telling the operator what parts to cut, how many pieces, and the length. ALPHACAM is also used for engraving. “All our kitchens and bedrooms have a door with the company name and logo

Panel & Joinery Production - September / October 2020

Software engraved on it. With kitchens it’s the sink door, and a cupboard door in bedrooms, so ALPHACAM plays a part in every kitchen and bedroom we produce.” But it’s CABINET VISION that he regards as being essential for the company’s specific casework requirements. “It’s our lifeblood, full stop.” He says a small kitchen could comprise an average of up to 200 components, taking around a dozen sheets of raw material. “That’s just for the sheet material – in addition there are parts for drawer boxes, and the doors, all of which are also calculated on CABINET VISION. Those figures would be doubled, and even trebled for bigger kitchens, and run into thousands for the largest ones we produce.” Which makes it all the more important that CABINET VISION designs can be completed so quickly. “Even our small kitchens have a number of specialised units, but from starting initial design work to having the job ready for the machine tool is often less than an hour. And even our largest kitchens with many specialised units only take up to half a day”. “Once the design’s complete, I simply transfer it from my PC to our CNC Dynamics router using CABINET VISION’S Screen2Machine functionality, and we know that every cut component will be 100 per cent accurate and assemble together with no issue.”

In conclusion, he says CABINET VISION is vital to the critical area of their entire process: “After receiving an enquiry we do a full measure and initial design. Once the customer approves the design and agrees the price, our surveyor goes on site and finalises all unit sizes and identifies issues like pipe boxing and deeper recesses (for equipment such as stop-taps). Then everything is transferred into the full CABINET VISION design and manufacturing process.”

CAD+T: Helping The Industry Embrace Change Could your business benefit from an ongoing advice and support service in the wake of COVID-19? For over 30 years, CAD+T Consulting GmbH has worked with furniture manufacturers to guide, support and develop new corporate practises and future-proof businesses across Europe. Now, with the global economy taking a serious hit, CAD+T’s consultancy service is an ideal solution for those who want to take advantage of a changing market. “In recent months, it has been a case of sink or swim for many businesses around the world,” begins Dr. Andreas Undesser, Head of Consulting at CAD+T Consulting GmbH. “Every business in every sector has had to adapt in some shape or form and the furniture industry is no exception. The market continues to change and with this comes a need to re-model internal structures and business strategies. “Right now, the focus is on how to adjust businesses to secure a long-term future. It’s a hugely challenging and time-consuming task to embark on but that’s where our consultancy specialists come in.” Each member of CAD+T’s consultancy team has over 20 years of industry experience and their specialities include Product Management and Subsidy Management to Human Resource Management and Management Consulting. They also have a deep understanding of the furniture manufacturing industry. Andreas adds, “We work in a very particular field and we have to know and understand the challenges our customers may face. A solid background in the industry is crucial.” The process begins with a free consultation that offers both sides a better understanding of each other and an opportunity to discuss the specialist support that may be needed. Andreas explains, “We begin every job with a blank piece of paper and three questions: Where is the company now? Where does it want to be? And how can we implement new business strategies to get the results it wants in the short, mid and long term? No business is the same and, therefore, no answer is ever the same.”

CAD+T’s specialists to recruit, train and develop new staff, offer interim management or assist in audits. The scope is huge. “It’s our job to analyse your current situation, identify areas of weakness and strength, develop strategies and successfully implement new process, work flows, structures and systems. We can even help our customers apply for international funding and national and regional grants that will help finance future developments,” says Andreas. “Change management takes time but is a crucial component for success. That’s why we have a long-term commitment to our clients. We work closely with our clients to complete each stage of the plan and overcome the operational, technical and human challenges we may face along the way. This requires trust on both sides and a willingness to accept change. If we can achieve this, we’re half way to achieving our goal.” Andreas adds, “In the current climate, we are seeing a large number of companies approaching us. Many don’t have the time or resources to re-structure their business themselves, but they do want to benefit from specialist support in order for them to take advantage of new opportunities. We understand the challenges our industry is facing and we’re here to help you grow and strengthen your business and remain competitive in these unprecedented times.”

Solutions could range from changing the product offering, to entering new markets, integrating new technology into its business or adjusting the internal or external structure of the business in order to move forward effectively. Alternatively, it could require

Decorative Surfaces The Decorative Panels Group British Manufacturing For A Great Britain As with all responsible businesses keeping their staff, customers and wider supply chain safe remains their number one priority. From the moment the country entered lockdown Decorative Panels began to install measures throughout all their manufacturing sites to ensure that they could operate a COVIDSafe environment. All measures were risk assessed internally and approved by the HSE to ensure they could effectively maintain the safety and wellbeing of all their colleagues and the wider community. The impact of COVID-19 has been felt by all in every aspect of daily life and with the pandemic set to be with us for a considerable time yet the importance of maximising the potential of the “new normal” is one that has to be embraced - one that British Manufacturers like Decorative Panels can embrace with high quality, competitive products supplied on short lead times to help support the British economy and British jobs. The Decorative Panels Group is very much “Open for Business as Usual”, in all three of their businesses. Following a very brief period of closure following the Government announcement of lockdown all their UK Manufacturing businesses reopened and continue to supply the most prominent names in the furniture and associated industries – in a safe environment for all. Decorative Panels Lamination continues to lead the way in the production of laminated sheet materials with surface finishes ranging from woodgrain paper foil veneers through to high gloss and matt acrylics, under the brands of dp-decor and dp-specialist, as well as an ever expanding portfolio of unique and diverse surface solutions under the brand of dp-limitless. With production levels of over 300,000m2 per week using a wide range of substrate materials the need to carry substantial stockholdings to ensure they are able to support manufacturing lead times of as little as 24 hours has never been more essential than now. With the support of their excellent supply chain partners they have been able to maintain these levels of service throughout the pandemic, an essential component in ensuring Decorative Panels play their part in supporting UK Manufacturing.

18

Decorative Panels Components is one of the largest trade convertors of wood based panels in the world, supplying high volume cut, edged, drilled and shaped components to manufacturers and retailers alike. With a productive capacity of over 600,000 panels per week and working from 175,000 ft2 of the most modern and productive manufacturing facilities in Europe they are able to offer bespoke solutions to the most demanding of contract requirements. Investment has continued at a pace throughout the last months with the development of a 40,000 ft2 warehouse that will allow them to offer further support in terms of finished goods stock for immediate delivery. Decorative Panels Furniture operates from a site that extends to over 250,000 ft2 of manufacturing and distribution space. Specialists in the production of flat pack furniture, with a productive capacity of over 15,000 boxes per day they have been able to seamlessly continue to supply key products without interruption throughout, for example they have produced and delivered approaching 100,000 desks to support the necessity of home working. New Product Development is the lifeblood of all business and DP have always looked to be at the forefront of innovation by utilising their Marketing Suite to present and develop product and concepts with new and existing customers. In the coming months using this facility to the full will undoubtedly be more difficult with fewer face to face meetings, however they will not let this stand in the way of ensuring the company effectively introduces and presents the best of British Manufacturing to the market by using a combination of regular product updates, individual and group video presentations, and extensive product sampling. They will of course continue to make their Marketing Suite available for customer use on an individual company visit basis either with or without their personnel in attendance personally or by video link. Tailored product presentations can be arranged in advance ensuring that Decorative Panels continue to offer the highest possible standards of service to the entire market.

Panel & Joinery Production - September / October 2020

Decorative Surfaces The Company’s supply chain has been without exception incredibly supportive throughout. They had purposely taken the decision to increase their stockholding of all key raw materials in the months before the lockdown and whilst this has proved a real help they have worked together with the supply chain to ensure they have had zero stock outs in all their businesses. One product area that has seen a surge of renewed interest are their antimicrobial finishes. The Decorative Panels Group have had specific antimicrobial products within their offer for over 8 years now but as can be imagined the interest in these has now accelerated. As such they have made the decision to roll out a much wider offering across many more areas all of which will offer the highest possible protection independently tested to ISO 22196. The most important question that customers should always ask of suppliers such as Decorative Panels: “How long does the protection last? As the Company work with the market leader and most trusted supplier of antimicrobial additives the products that they provide contain inbuilt antimicrobial protection effective for the lifetime of the product. The potential areas of application for such products are as can be imagined vast and are not limited to the healthcare environment. It is fair to say that such products are now seen as just as relevant in most areas of everyday life and will continue to become more widespread. The Company will be saying much more about these exciting products in the coming months. Manufacturing in Britain, to support the ever increasing move towards on-shoring, with the ability to create shorter more responsive supply chains with lower carbon footprints and the security of high quality competitive British made products will become increasingly more important as The Decorative Panels Group move into a new future. As a recognised and valued British brand across many industries Decorative Panels believe in delivering exceptional customer service supported by their continual investment in infrastructure, technology and people. With the support of their trusted supply chain partners and the commitment of their colleagues and customers there has never been a greater opportunity than now to promote British Manufacturing for a Great Britain.

Fittings Extra Peanuts Over the past few months, things have been busy for components company Intelligent Fixings. The lockdown and cancellation of trade shows gave the company time to work on several new, exciting ideas, while continuing to dispatch its innovative, simple to use connectors. The slowdown seemed to give many businesses breathing space to try out the PEANUT® Connecting System. There are several new additions to the system this year. A new, Patent Pending, ramped slot design for use with all of the PEANUT® connectors allows for increased strength and ease of assembly. As the component slides down the ramped slot, the panel material compresses, which increase the clamping force. A shorter version of PEANUT®2 and PEANUT®3, for face fixings and 45° angles, will be available soon. Both of these components will work with CNC machines and the IF router Jig. The IF Jig is for handheld routers, details can be found on the IF website. Excitingly, a smaller PEANUT®2 for 12mm thickness panels and above is in development, along with a new product for nesting machines to make 45° compound mitre joints, with just one machining process. The details of the newest nesting connector are currently confidential, so keep an eye on the IF website to know when they are made public.

Extraction from multiple local points keeps the edgebanding area dust-free.

Filtermist Upgrades Dams’ Extraction Filtermist Systems Limited has recently installed and commissioned an all-embracing extraction system for Dams International – a leading UK manufacturer and wholesaler of office furniture. Dams International boasts a 50-year heritage in the industry and, although the company now employs close to 300 people in the UK, it began life as a one-man operation in 1967. Barry Scott provided a business machine repair service and was responsible for coining the DAMS company name – Dictating & Adding Machine Service. Barry soon expanded into office furniture sales and when presented with an opportunity to supply Liverpool Council with office desks, the company started manufacturing wooden office furniture. The rest, as they say, is history and with head office, showroom, wooden furniture and upholstery manufacturing, assembly, warehousing and distribution facilities all now located side by side at Knowsley Industrial Park, Merseyside, the company has full control over manufacturing and product quality.

of the companies that recently merged with other Filtermist operations to form Filtermist Systems Limited. This prior experience meant that Dams’ production director, Michael Dingwall, had no reservations about continuing this association when the decision was taken to completely replace the old extraction system. “The previous system had just about reached its end-of-life and new machinery purchases in recent years meant the system no longer provided sufficient extraction to cope effectively if all machines were used at the same time,” Michael explained. Dams’ woodworking plant operates around the clock and extraction fans for the previous system were running continuously, at full power, 24 hours a day. “Like every business, we continually review production costs in order to remain competitive in the marketplace. The need to replace the extraction system also presented us with an opportunity

Investments in equipment to support the manufacturing operation means the woodworking factory is home to a range of high-tech, high-speed equipment for large-scale furniture manufacture – all essential tools in the production of the high quality panels used in the company’s ranges of office furniture and storage systems, but all producing high volumes of waste dust that requires extraction at source. Over the years, Dams has relied on dust and woodwaste extraction services provided by both DCS and Cades - two

to invest in a system which would not only extract woodwaste effectively, but one which could also achieve reductions in energy consumption and significantly reduce operating costs.”

Case Study

In common with most furniture manufacturers, fluctuations in production volumes for particular components, and variations in product styling requirements, mean that it’s actually quite rare that all machines are in use at the same time. Consequently, as Michael Dingwall confirmed: “The old extraction system was constantly extracting at levels way above what was generally required.” Following a full review of Dams’ requirements for current and future dust extraction and woodwaste management, Steve Rhodes, Systems Sales Manager at Filtermist, put forward a comprehensive proposal for the installation of an externallysited Moldow filter unit complete with new extraction fans, XS Automation electrical control gear, and Filtermist’s FastClip steel ducting fitted throughout. Steve Rhodes also proposed the implementation of Ecogate® energy-saving smart technology, with automatic motorised dampers fitted to all machine extraction points, and the entire system controlled by a bank of Ecogate® greenBOX controllers. Filtermist Systems Limited is the sole UK agent for ATEXcompliant Moldow filter units and the new installation at Dams features a Moldow MHL 204-336 modular baghouse filter. Moldow High Load (MHL) filter units are constructed from galvanised steel plate and are designed for high waste volumes and continuous 24/7 operation. At Dams the system is designed to operate under negative pressure which is provided by two, low-noise, 90kW Moldow direct drive fans; each fan having the capacity to extract over 58,500m3/hr from the ‘clean side’ of the filter unit. At the top of the MHL unit are 20 filter sections, each with an array of anti-static filter bags, providing a total filtration surface area of 700m². Extracted dust settles on the outer surface of the 2,700mm long tubular bags which taper

Custom-built XS Automation control panel and four Ecogate® greenBOX controllers provide capacity to control up to 48 automatic dampers. from 150mm diameter at the top, to 100mm at the bottom. A unique air regeneration system utilises a 4kW fan to automatically and continuously clean the filter bags during operation. Dust purged from the filter bags falls into the hopper section at the base of the unit and is then directed by a drag chain conveyor towards a rotary valve, from where the waste is discharged pressure-free. A 22kW fan transfers the discharged waste to a fuel storage silo, for use in the company’s woodwaste burner or, when necessary, diverts it via a closed-loop system to a trailer for removal from site. The installation serves over 20 machines, with a total extraction volume requirement of 130,0003/hr, and also includes spark detection devices and explosion non-return valves in each of the four main dust extraction lines. Although the system is designed to be able to accommodate all machines in operation at the same time, the maximum requirement is normally much lower than this and varies continuously as machines come on or off-line. Ecogate® technology ensures the fans operate at the optimum levels required to maintain efficient extraction, and to extract only from machines that are in operation. As well as monitoring machines coming on or offline during a normal working day shift, the Ecogate® system also ensures minimum power usage through a night shift when machine usage is generally much lower. “Using our audit of machine usage at Dams we calculated that the cost of the Ecogate installation could be recovered in just 12 months,” says Steve Rhodes. As well as looking forward to significant ongoing cost savings, Michael Dingwall was also delighted with the schedule of works undertaken by Filtermist’s installation engineers: “The Filtermist team had prepared the way for our new filter to be installed over the Christmas shut-down and, by the first day back after the break, the new filter installation was completed and operational.”

FastClip extraction ductwork installed throughout the factory includes Ecogate® automatic dampers for over 20 machines.

Profile Combilift’s pedestrian models enhance safety for the operator and others in the vicinity

Combilift - Shining A Spotlight On Space Utilisation And Safety Safety has always been in the spotlight, but never more so than now, and reducing risks for the workforce is therefore a major issue as businesses get going again. Even though certain rules have been relaxed, social distancing will be required for the foreseeable future, and amid all these new concerns, overall safety when operating forklifts needs to remain a priority. One consequence of the Coronavirus for the manufacturing sector has been the challenge to get back to normal output levels whilst creating extra space in production areas so that employees maintain safe distances from each other. Combilift’s expertise in the design and layout of premises

24

can help to maximise the production areas – which is where profit is made, whilst reducing the space for storage of materials and finished products – which engenders costs. By optimising both these areas companies can comply with safety requirements whilst maintaining output. Combilift has recently implemented a virtual site survey system if personal visits are not possible. This uses inhouse developed technology and video calling apps and is quick and straightforward. During the call, the site owner or manager switches their phone to video mode and walks through the site, stopping at specific pinch points to take a screen grab of that area. They may also then be asked to

Profile supply further details on the dimensions of certain areas. On the basis of this information, Combilift can supply simulated animations and 3D designs within 24 hours, which clearly show how to achieve a substantial increase in storage capacity. But with so much focus on Coronavirus related issues, safety in other areas should not be overlooked. Manoeuvring long loads around busy production areas and through access doors for example can pose all sorts of risks. Trying to solve this by using a couple of counterbalance forklifts at either end of a load is definite a ‘no-no’ from a health and safety point of view and travelling with elevated loads to avoid obstacles is also deemed to be hazardous practice. Specialist products such as Combilift’s multidirectional forklifts are the solution here. Designed specifically for the challenges of long and bulky loads, they combine the advantages of a counterbalance forklift, sideloader and narrow aisle truck in one for safe, space saving and efficient operation. Their low

centre of gravity and integrated platform provides a stable, low base for resting loads on during transportation and the cab position at the side of the mast offers a clear view of the load. 4-way ability enables quick change of the wheel direction to allow sideways travel in confined spaces or though doorways. Replacing ride-on forklifts with pedestrian models when possible is also an acknowledged way to improve safety. These naturally operate at slower speeds than ride-on forklifts, and operators have a heightened awareness of their environment and good all-round visibility of the load and the forks. Combilift’s range of pedestrian trucks all feature its unique, patented multiposition tiller arm, which ensures maximum safety for the operator and other people nearby. This can be turned to the left or right of the truck, allowing the operator to remain in the safest possible position when working in narrow aisles - at the side rather than at the rear, reducing the risk of the operator being crushed or trapped between the truck and racking. The current circumstances could therefore be an opportunity to take stock, evaluate overall safety and put measures in place to protect the workforce from the risks invisible or more evident - that may be out there.

Storage Solutions From Blum For The Modern Home Blum have been researching how modern homes work for over 20 years. And one of the main considerations is how to obtain more storage space, particularly in the kitchen, where more appliances and gadgets need a home, but also in the living, bedroom and bathroom areas. Over the years, Blum have come up with industry standards, like full-extension drawers, wider opening hinges which provide easier access, and drawers to replace doors and fixed shelves in base units. But there are so many more opportunities that Blum fittings have to offer. AVENTOS HK top AVENTOS HK top is an award-winning lift stay system from Blum. A lift system for wall units means that the door lifts up and away, rather than opening into the room so they can be left open, without causing an obstruction. Suitable for cabinet heights of 205mm to 600mm and widths of up to 1800mm, AVENTOS HK top blends discreetly into tall units and wall cabinets. Minimalist in its design, it can be used with wooden fronts, wide and narrow aluminium frame or even thin fronts of 8mm. SPACE STEP Taking home storage to new levels, this nifty hidden helper creates instant storage space behind plinths and toe kicks with the added benefit of providing quick and easy access to tall wall cabinets. As well as allowing users to access those otherwise out-of-reach areas higher up, it also provides easy access storage while giving children a helping hand to reach basins, worktops and sinks. With SPACE STEP, designers now have free rein to use every inch of space in compact homes as well as larger open-plan living areas. It opens swiftly and

SPACE TOWER A triumph of engineering, the SPACE TOWER larder solution is the most ergonomic solution available. With individual pullout shelves, there is no need for a void to lift contents out. So every inch of internal storage is available. The contents are instantly visible, due to the full extension runners, and can be accessed from three sides. SPACE TWIN Whether a big or small kitchen – you can never have too much storage space. Depending on the design and space available, you might find yourself left with small gaps in awkward areas (e.g. close to the worktop or hob, between fitted units and the wall or to the side of the oven). Manufacturer of fittings, Blum has come up with a practical and eye-catching solution that allows you to use every inch available. SPACE TWIN not only creates valuable storage but also provides instant access to items as it is on full extension runners. The concept allows you to realise an extra cabinet with a width of just 20cm or more, and if placed near an oven or food preparation zone can store frequently used items, giving a shorter and simpler workflow. Training Top Tips for Effective Machine Training By Alex Dalton & Warren Handley Training operates almost like a second business within Daltons Wadkin. We have three full-time trainers and were set to hire a fourth before COVID-19 . There was a great deal of growth and we were delivering machine and power tool training to businesses across the UK and Ireland. Most manufacturing companies closed their doors in March only reopening fairly recently. Procedures and risk assessments have been put in place, allowing firms to operate as close to normal as possible but on-site and external training is harder. Training is hands-on and it’s hard to get away from that. We work with different machines, different tools, and different manufacturers; tailoring all the courses to the needs of our customers. With social distancing measures in place, there are challenging hurdles that businesses, like ours, need to get over to deliver training not only to the same high standard but safely, too. We carried out a rigorous risk assessment and produced suitable method statements that allowed us to carry out training, both onsite with customers or at our own Nottingham-based workshop – whichever was safer. Demand for the training is rising again. But how can businesses like ours carry it out safely? Warren Handley has 36 years experience working and training in the woodworking industry, he has shared his insight into the best practice and how manufacturers can deliver their expertise safely to its customers, clients, and colleagues. Deal with the early sense of apprehension head on Training, before COVID-19, was fairly fast-paced and was immensely important to clients and customers. No one job is the same. We could be spending several days with businesses training multiple colleagues across multiple machines, or working with a smaller company to train all its operators across a number of machines in one go. But COVID changed that. None of us have experienced anything like this before. In the beginning, when we were starting to phase training back into the business, I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a feeling of apprehension about delivering training and if it could be realistically delivered safely. That apprehension, however, disappeared after we discussed the logistics of how it would work and since delivering the first course, it has become second nature. Above all else, comfort is key The most important factor is comfort. You can’t have people working and learning on these dangerous machines if they are not comfortable with it. Talk to the client to make sure you’re aware of their internal practices. Every business has got a plan in place, but some are stricter than others.

28

Alex Dalton

Warren Handley

Training takes longer to complete under these circumstances so be prepared to remain with a business for as long as is required to deliver the course to the highest possible standard. Pivoting to provide social-distanced demonstrations We reduced the number of demonstrations held per day. It’s important not to rush through training when these COVID-19 measures have been put in place. Having smaller groups makes it easier to truly demonstrate and explain what you’re showing. Admittedly, the process is slower and longer and requires more explaining, but if this is what it takes to help operators understand clearly what needs to be done, that is ultimately what we are there for. Make the most of your environment and be willing to compromise Every job is completely different and that includes the workshops we deliver the training in. Some are spacious. Some are not. And you have to adapt accordingly and be prepared to make sacrifices to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of those you’re working with. We recently trained an operator on a machine that was located in a large, spacious, area in a client’s workshop, doing so even though there was a better machine to have trained on. Why? Because the better machine was located in a more refined area, which would have compromised safety. The environment is as important as the training you’re delivering. If you don’t get that right, you will never teach anyone anything. Don’t forget your own flask of tea! I would definitely advise you to bring a flask of coffee or tea with you. With the rules in place, most complementaries are no longer available. Final thoughts Training has changed and it is anyone’s guess as to how long it is going to be like this for. It doesn’t mean that training cannot be delivered effectively. Smaller focus groups can help trainers get their messages and demonstrations across easier while making compromises - like training on a different machine even if it’s technically not a better one - to benefit health and safety is going to be the norm for the foreseeable. It’s about making the most of your environment, introducing a level of comfort suitable for everyone involved. Get that right and you will get your training right.

The W Exhibition 2021 Countdown Is On! September marks the official one-year countdown to The W Exhibition 2021 - September 26 - 29, 2021. And since announcing its new 2021 NEC fixture, the industry has thrown its support behind the UK’s flagship event for the furniture manufacturing and joinery industries. The organisers, who have reported sales of over 80% of stand capacity in recent weeks, have been inundated with messages of support from its cohort of loyal exhibitors. MD, Nickie West commented: “As we mark the one-year countdown to The W Exhibition 2021, I am delighted to be able to say that we have received extremely positive support from every corner of the industry.” “In particular, we have been overwhelmed by the support of our stakeholders, who have all endorsed our date change announcement. We will be working as closely as possible with each and every one of them to ensure that we deliver the best event next September.” “There are some really exciting changes which are being developed behind the scenes. The campaign for The W Exhibition 2021 represents our biggest investment to date, which is why we have been so determined to move the event over to the right timeline to do all of this work justice. We want to deliver the best possible ROI for our exhibitors and visitors alike.”

30

Amongst the exhibitors to voice their support of the new W21 dates is Alex Dalton of Daltons Wadkin. He said: “We’re disappointed to have to wait a further year, but it is completely the right decision to postpone the show to 2021. The W Exhibition provides a shop front for us to connect with the market and allows us to go toe-to-toe with our competition. You can’t quite beat the energy and thrill that you get from a show - it is second to none. “The new dates provide a positive milestone for the industry to look forward and work towards. The extra time should also allow for the further development of new equipment and products, which can only be a good thing for W21 visitors.” Matt Pearce, Managing Director, TM Machinery & TM Services said: “Moving the exhibition dates to September 2021 is the correct call in the current climate. We also believe that the UK’s furniture manufacturing industry will benefit from the show following Ligna, as visitors will be able to experience the very latest innovations to enter the market sooner.” Shaye Chatfield, International Area Sales Manager (UK & Ireland), Lamello commented: “The W Exhibition is the only trade show in the UK to represent the furniture manufacturing industry as a whole and it needs to take place when both visitors and exhibitors can benefit from such an important event. Feature 2021 is a must for this to happen and we’re looking forward to presenting our very latest innovations to the UK again next year.” Martina Schwarz, International Sales & Marketing, CAD+T: “The UK furniture design and manufacturing industry is an extremely important market for CAD+T. We completely agree with the exhibition moving to 2021 and we’re looking forward to showcasing our CAD/CAM software solutions next year.” Andrew Baker of Biesse commented: “We fully support the move of the W20 show and appreciate the effort made by the organisers to secure a date that is realistic in terms of future show success as well as for the industry as a whole considering the added complications with showing machinery in a noisy environment and respecting the social distancing within a short planning window. This also allows us to focus on our short to medium term business plans without having the additional pressure of organising participation at a show.” David Thomson-Rowlands of RW Machines added: “We fully support the new 2021 dates for The W Exhibition, as announced by the organisers. In essence, it was a no brainer. We need this industry platform, but not within a year where the uncertainty and restrictions surrounding COVID-19 will still be in force. We’re very much looking forward to getting back to The W Exhibition in September 2021.”

JJ Smith MD, Guy Stanley commented: “Whilst it is disappointing that we won’t have the show this year, we fully support it being rescheduled to September 2021, by which time we hope all our customers will be looking forward to attending what should be one of the biggest and best W events to date.” The W Exhibition has over 40 years of heritage, and continues to grow. It will return to the NEC for its bi-ennial four-day showcase from September 26 - 29, 2021. The show brings together some of the world’s leading suppliers of woodworking machinery, materials and tooling.

The entire building was previously heated using LPG which would have been prohibitively expensive and went against the company’s aim of being as eco-friendly as possible. AFS Biomass were recommended to Managing Director, Steve Bremner, who needed a modern, efficient and robust biomass boiler system which was accredited to burn the manufacturing residue including sawdust, shavings, offcuts and packaging. “A highly professional, quality led organisation that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend,” said Steve. AFS Biomass recommended the Gilles HPKI-R Industrial Boiler, with heat distributed throughout the factory, warehouse and despatch from overhead multi-directional fan coil radiators. The offices and showroom were connected via a plate heat exchanger to the existing radiator system.

In addition to huge savings from burning free wood fuel against the cost of LPG, further savings were created against the previous cost of disposal of that waste. Yet another bonus is the fact that the biomass boiler is accredited to the Government RHI scheme, (Renewable Heat Incentive), designed to reward businesses that contribute to the UK’s carbon reduction targets. Payable for 20 years for all the metered, eligible heat generated from biomass, it provides a very welcome additional income stream. However, The RHI scheme will end for new applicants on 31st March 2021. It is therefore vital to move quickly to avoid missing out on this extremely valuable incentive. Be rewarded today for adopting biomass heating or be penalised tomorrow through ever increasing carbon taxes for sticking with fossil fuels. AFS Biomass is leading the way in the promotion and implementation of all forms of biomass energy generation. As one of the few Carbon Trust Accredited Suppliers in the UK, AFS Biomass offers the design, installation and ongoing maintenance to many diverse sectors, including furniture and kitchen manufacturers, sawmills, pallet companies and more. References are available on request from a large number of highly satisfied clients.

So why choose a biomass heating system: •

Savings against current fossil fuel costs, which continue to rise.

Wood waste disposal savings - create energy from waste rather than pay for its removal.

Mitigate against future carbon taxes.

Enhance green credentials - claim carbon neutrality for heating.

Eligible for the Government RHI scheme (Renewable Heat Incentive).

Founder & Managing Director Steve Chaney-North with the HOMAG CENTATEQ N-500

New Start-Up Intrinsic Works Partners With HOMAG UK Based in the heart of Leicestershire, Intrinsic Works is a start-up furniture manufacturing company specialising in bespoke bedroom, home office and media furniture for the trade. The company began trading from its 6,000 sq. ft. Stoney Stanton facility in November 2018 and has achieved remarkable results in a very short time. It will hit a turnover of around £700,000 in its first full financial year some 40 per cent up on target. From the outset, Intrinsic Works’ goal was to produce premium products; to do that meant investing in the very best machinery available. Founder and managing director, Steve Chaney-North, takes up the story: “For the venture to succeed, we knew we had to hit the ground running and have woodworking machinery that we could rely on to produce first class quality products consistently. “We bought a plot of land and had a purpose built facility designed and constructed to house the business. Selecting the right machinery partner was possibly the most important part of our strategy. If we got it right we had a fighting chance, but if the machinery let us down there was a very strong possibility we’d sink without trace.” Researching the market “Given the high stakes, we approached the three leading brands in the industry, quickly narrowing down the choice to two, one of which was HOMAG. After in depth discussions we finalised our decision and it was the reputation of the

34

HOMAG brand that won the day. We didn’t want to risk settling for second best and of course the quality of the HOMAG product speaks for itself. “From our first discussion, Matt Long and Simon Brooks made us feel confident and relaxed about, what for us, was a very significant investment. We explained what we needed the machines to do and they came back with recommendations to address our requirements. “Initially, we had asked for an edge bander, a beam saw and a vertical drilling station. Matt came back, however, and asked if we had considered a CNC nesting machine rather than the saw and drill combination. “To be honest we hadn’t thought about that option. When they explained what the nesting machine could achieve and the automation it would bring to our business, we were totally sold on the idea.” EDGETEQ S-390 and CENTATEQ N-500 “The package we agreed included the EDGETEQ S-390 model 1860E edge bander and the CENTATEQ N-500 CNC nesting machine. HOMAG was really helpful in finalising a deal we could afford. They introduced us to a finance company that provided a cost-effective five-year agreement. “The EDGETEQ S-390 is a cracking machine. The quality of the finish is absolutely first class; it is fast (20 m per min) and

Panel & Joinery Production - September / October 2020

Feature completely reliable. We did think about a return system, but as most of our work is batch size one production, it didn’t make sense for us. “As for the nesting machine, that was such a good decision. Basically, the CNC performs two operations in one pass; cutting the panels and drilling them with incredible accuracy.

“Naturally, with technically advanced machinery, there will always be the occasional issue. The service support from HOMAG, however, is outstanding and they get us back up and running in no time at all. Giving Intrinsic Works’ customers the confidence to order

“What’s more, it is totally automated. We put the jumbo panels on the machine using a forklift truck and then the machine takes over, cutting, drilling and off-loading automatically.

“As a new company, we knew the margin for error was slim. Our approach was to target the fitters and make sure that every product we produced for them was accurate, easy to install and fantastic quality.

“Not only does it save us around 40 per cent time wise, but it also requires one less operator, reduces energy usage and, from a health and safety aspect, avoids any manual heavy lifting.”

“We made their lives easy and consequently saved them time and money. Word of our performance soon filtered up to senior management of the retailers we supply who now had first-hand proof of our abilities and performance levels. Unquestionably, the HOMAG machinery has been instrumental in achieving this success and I can’t recommend them highly enough,” concludes Steve Chaney-North.

HOMAG: Quality products, first class service “Both machines deliver exceptional performance. The accuracy is amazing and totally consistent, whilst the quality of finish is second to none. Additionally, once you’ve been trained, they are fast and easy to operate. “To maximise performance we invested in HOMAG’s e-solutions and MagiCut software. This enables us to do all the bespoke programming in the office and then send the information down to the shop floor where the machine operators just have to hit the go button.

Woodwaste Money Saving Solution For Manufacturing Businesses As Uncertain Times Continue Whilst companies continue to trade in difficult times, there’s been an increase in enquiries for money saving business solutions, as business owners try to future-proof their businesses. 2020 has been a nightmare for UK manufacturers, as the arrival of COVID-19 and the resulting lockdown caused unprecedented effects on businesses of all sizes. With an uncertain future ahead, many Managing Directors and Financial Directors have been forced to evaluate outgoings and business commitments. For some, this analysis was revelatory, highlighting which elements of expenditure contribute most heavily to a business’s overall operational spend, allowing plans to be put into place to rectify this going forward - to help protect a company’s future in a very unpredictable world. Some business owners would have been astounded at how much money was being spent on energy and waste disposal. Armed with this knowledge, forward-thinking companies will be starting to evaluate ways to reduce these costs, in order to work more efficiently. One of the most cost-effective routes for businesses that generate waste wood is to invest in a wood waste heater. Converting waste wood into energy could save a business thousands of pounds on heating and waste disposal bills each year.

UK Manufacturer, Wood Waste Technology offers a range of wood waste heaters to suit all sizes of businesses. Easy to use and install, the heaters can save companies money on waste management solutions such as hiring skips, whilst also helping keep premises warm without the need for electricity, oil or gas. Wood Waste Technology’s heaters can deal with all kinds of wood, from MDF and pallets to hardwoods and sawdust. The units are also incredibly environmentally friendly and are compliant with the Clean Air Act. Combustion rather than incineration makes for a much greener alternative to waste management, and hugely reduces the carbon footprint. For over 18 years, Wood Waste Technology has helped other businesses future proof energy costs from continually rising rates. All its wood waste heaters are manufactured in Staffordshire, helping to eliminate any post-Brexit energy or import issues too. Durable and dependable, every wood waste heater Wood Waste Technology has ever sold is still in use today! If your business generates waste wood, then get in touch with Wood Waste Technology to find out more. Why pay for your waste wood to be taken away when you can use it to produce free heating for your business instead! Over the years, Wood Waste Technology’s expertise in wood waste solutions has helped many companies reduce their waste disposal and heating costs. As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance for new units, the company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs.

SCM - Exclusive Turnkey Finishing 594-Magnum SCM stands out as a unique partner for the entire surfaces processing/treatment with all-round products and services and exclusive and sophisticated finishing solutions to meet all process requirements and finished product type. Three integrated process solutions: FLEXIBLE FINISHING CELL It is an extremely flexible combination of versatile technologies for sanding and painting, capable to generate various finishing effects. The solution is addressed to small and medium sized companies with moderate production volumes, strongly oriented towards high quality and exclusivity of finishing to satisfy the expectations of the most demanding customers. The cell combines the uses of the automatic wide belt sander Dmc Eurosystem and spraying Superfici Mini Reflex to meet these requirements perfectly. They give a contribution in terms of consistent productivity and high quality, as well as repeatability of finishes over time. Thanks to the technological features, the flexibility and operational versatility that usually characterizes the manual processes, are maintained. There are different samples that can be easily obtained. Different levels of structuring effects on veneer or solid wood alternatively a close pore effect, otherwise matt or glossy lacquer finishing on mdf panels can be achieved. The easy set-up of the machines allows a fast pass from one operation to another or one batch to the next batch. The single sander can be used for calibrating operations for surface preparation, the raw and base coat sanding, creation of close pore finishing or structuring effects. Also the single spraying machine can apply primer, base coat and top coat products. The sprayer is also equipped with an innovative system for the back and forth of the workpieces that allows the use by a single operator to minimize the use

38

of manpower in case of small batches. Therefore, the entire finishing cycle will be managed with two machines by multi-passing through to create a compact finishing area in the factory. As an option, the solutions can be connected together in line, in combination with cabin drying systems with trolleys to create a turnkey finishing area. It is also possible to provide automatic loading and unloading systems to increase the production efficiency of the cell. The SCM and Superfici machines in the detail: It is possible to appreciate the versatility of the finishing effects achieved with the Dmc Eurosystem sanding machine, with two new additions: a completely new planetary unit, ideal for structuring, chamfering, sanding the cross grain and precision finishing of any surface, and the interchangeable brushes unit, ideal for those in search of maximum production flexibility. The spraying application phase is performed by the new Superfici Mini Reflex. It enables single operator functionality, to minimize labour when producing small batches. The loading and unloading on the same side of the machine at the infeed area can also be managed by automatic systems, thus ensuring the working autonomy of the cell without operators for the workpiece handling. In case of larger batches or higher capacity needs, the machine can still be used in standard mode with an operator at the infeed

Feature 3D LAMINATING A surface treatment widely adopted by many door manufacturers and constantly growing, thanks to the continuous technological development of machineries, laminating materials and adhesive glues that allow the final products to reach considerable aesthetic and performance targets.

DMC Eurosystem Detail and an operator at the outfeed. A real flexible finishing cell, whose use can be easily adapted to the everyday variable production needs. 3D SURFACES AND SUPER MATT FINISHING The recent technologies developed for the preparation and treatment of surfaces, allow for surfaces with increased aesthetic and mechanical performance. In recent years, in the context of surface preparation, innovative working units have been developed that have converted the concept of the Dmc sanding machine into a modular flexible abrasive centre. With technologies that make possible the creation of 3D finishing effects such as patterns, hand scraping, wood structuring, saw cut and woodworm, to give to the products original surface effects. Today a further contribution is provided by Superfici Excimatt, the new excimer UV lamps dryers able to produce an ultra-matt finishing on both flat and 3D panels, which emphasize the previous processes and give to the surface a soft-touch and smooth effect. The benefits provided by this new technology not only affect the degree of matt to the finish, which is lower than 5 glosses, but also the increased mechanical performance. In fact, thanks to the special ability to micro-texture the most external layer of paint, you get a surface with a very high degree of hardness and scratch resistance and an exclusive surface anti-fingerprint effect. Machines in the detail: SCM offers highly innovative solutions like the Dmc System sanding machines, that transform the concept of the sanding machine in a flexible abrasive modular centre. The unique three-dimensional processing effects on the workpiece surface are enhanced by one of the most innovative finishing processes. Thanks to the newest UV treatment systems, the spraying application with Superfici Magnum gives an extraordinary soft touch and an extremely low gloss surface, highly appreciated by the latest design trends. In this case, the Superfici Excimatt uses excimer technology in the finishing of furniture panels and perfectly combines with the wide range of the Superfici UV solutions. Interesting are also the roller applications of our Valtorta F1 integrated with Superfici Excimatt. The application range is very wide and it finds interesting uses on the most varied materials.

Another important advantage offered by this process, beyond the possibility of laminating the 3D panels, is having a laminated product not only on the main surface but also on the edges, without having discontinuity of graphics and colours, and presence of joining lines of edges, which allows to give to the final object a full and solid appearance. The result of a 3d lamination is a combination of operations to be carried out with particular care and attention, in which technology and working parameters play a key role. From the quality in which surfaces are prepared through the sanding operation, through the correct application of the glue in quantity and sequence, to the correct pressure and temperature in which the press cycle is carried out This is why the interactions between technologies and the knowledge of what comes before and after each operation become very important.

Sergiani 3D Form SCM is able to take care of every stage of processing by providing the most suitable technological solutions for every requirement, with stand-alone machines or full integrated laminating lines. Machines in the detail: In this case, the process involves sanding, with the innovative units for gouging and brushing in the Dmc System range, the Superfici Bravorobot Glue for glue application, the efficient cartesian robots equipped with 3D scanning to achieve the selective spraying of edges and millings. The process concludes with the Sergiani 3d Form hp press, a solution with high productivity levels and flexibility thanks to the “Flexy Pin system and the configuration of the press up to three trays, that compact the cycle time into pressing time only. High definition of the end product even with the most complex 3d surfaces. T: 0115 977 0044 www.scmwood.com www.scmgroup.com
