Daltons Wadkin extensive demonstration facilities in Nottingham

PANEL SAW SOLUTIONS FROM DALTONS WADKIN Daltons Wadkin offers one of the most diverse and comprehensive ranges of panel saws in the UK. Partnering with leading European manufacturers including Altendorf, Elcon and SCM, the company boasts over 35 different models including sliding table panel saws, vertical panel saws and beam saws. Offering such a broad range of product types for panel processing allows Daltons Wadkin to guide customers through the pros and cons of each cutting method for a truly unbiased approach. Alex Dalton, Managing Director at Daltons Wadkin, confirms, “Our growing customer base includes modest start-ups through to high production manufacturers. One size does not fit all when it comes to panel saws. There are a number of variables to cater for; material type and size; production volume; available working area; workforce skill.” Panel saws are amongst the most universal of all machine types when it comes to the types of material that can be processed. Alex continues, “We have honed our offering to deliver cutting solutions not only for solid timber and wood-based panels, but also advanced materials including composites, plastics and non-ferrous metals. We are often given a problem to solve and our team excel at working with customers to find the best solution.” Vertical Panel Saws The Elcon range of wall saws are ideally suited for operations where a compact, safe and accurate panel saw is required. Machines cater for all standard (and non-standard) panel sizes with cutting depths from 55 to 150mm. Repeat

6

accuracy with electronic digital readouts guarantees precision cutting to 0.1mm/m. For faced materials Elcon’s successful double cut scoring system allows pre-scoring of the panel without the need for a separate scoring unit and the headaches that come with setting it. No longer the reserve for high production users, automatic cutting options are available across the Elcon range and can bring huge benefits to workshops small and large. One such example, the Elcon ADVANCE. Turning the cutting process on its head the ADVANCE features two or more clamps that descend and grab the panel(s) from above taking the full weight allowing a single operator to work the material from the bottom up minimising repeat panel handling. Sling Table Saws Daltons Wadkin are proud to offer sliding table panel saws from the industries two market leaders; Altendorf, the inventor of sliding table saws; SCM, the worlds largest manufacturing of woodworking machinery. The traditional dimension saw has evolved into the most diverse panel sizing machine available. The fundamentals remain the same with a simple choice of blade diameter, sliding table length and rip fence capacity but CNC technology now plays a greater role. Options for powered rise/ fall/ tilt of the blade, automatic fence adjustment, a range of scoring saw options and programmable control through touch screen controls make for a sophisticated workshop tool.

DEDICATED WOOD WASTE HEATER DELIVERS EVERYTHING REQUIRED The owner of a West Midlands joinery company is delighted with his purchase of a new wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology. Philip Gameson Joinery is a traditional family business established over 45 years ago in Halesowen. The company uses traditional skills mixed with the latest technology to produce high quality joinery items ranging from traditional doors and windows through to bespoke furniture and retail point of sale kiosks. Having already invested in one wood waste burner, the company decided to invest in a second one for its panel shop. Gameson’s panel shop covers a large area of around 7500 sq. ft and has a high glass roof, making it hard to keep cool in summer and hard to keep warm in winter! Director, Mark Gameson decided that a dedicated wood waste heater for the panel shop would help to heat the area during the cold months, whilst also helping the business recycle more of the waste wood that is generated by the 25 employees as part of the manufacturing process. Following more information and a site survey, Wood Waste Technology’s specialist engineers installed a WT10 wood waste heater into the joinery workshop earlier this year. Mark Gameson says: “Once we’d decided to buy a second heater, we got straight on to Wood Waste Technology, as we know they’ve got a great reputation in the industry. They regularly service our existing boiler, so we also know they’re a friendly and helpful team to deal with. “Once the heater was installed, the difference was obvious as the panel shop soon warmed up - much to the delight of the guys working in that area on shopfitting projects

and running the CNC! We’re very pleased we invested in the second heater as it more than fulfils our business requirements, so it’s been a great investment.” Kurt Cockroft, MD at Wood Waste Technology says: “Businesses with a significant amount of wood waste can get payback on their investment in a wood waste heater in as little as 12 months sometimes, simply because of the savings that can be made by reducing heating and skip hire bills.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. HOMAG TECHNOLOGY HELPS OMEGA PLC TO BECOME A MARKET LEADER Omega PLC is a market leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of high quality fitted kitchens and furniture. Its premium brands comprise of Mackintosh, Chippendale, Sheraton, English Rose, and Omega. Founded in 1996, this year marks the company’s 26th year in business. The company operates from a 400,000 sq. ft. purpose-built manufacturing complex in Thorne, near Doncaster. This facility deploys the very latest technology for fitted kitchen furniture production in the UK. Computer-aided design and computer-controlled manufacturing systems work together to create an exciting range of modern and classic kitchens which incorporate the very latest design innovations. 30 HOMAG machines and counting Having the very latest technology in kitchen furniture production has helped facilitate Omega’s rapid expansion to become the market leader it is today. HOMAG has been Omega’s woodworking machinery supplier of choice since 2014 when the company began its investment programme in the procurement of new machinery. Today almost all of its wood processing equipment is supplied by HOMAG UK. Three years ago, Omega completely overhauled its manufacturing facility and replaced its outdated HOMAG edge banders, saws, drills, presses and CNC routing machines with new models. It now operates some 30 HOMAG machines utilising seven HOMAG software platforms.

10

www.p-j-production.com

Recent growth prompted Omega to invest in an additional HOMAG CENTATEQ P110 CNC processing centre in November 2021, and a HOMAG SAWTEQ B-400 panel dividing saw in March 2022. This has allowed for more efficient cutting of melamine faced chipboard (MFC) for both doors and carcasses, increasing the company’s production capacity still further. A long-standing and vital partnership Commenting on Omega’s relationship with HOMAG, Alastair England, purchasing and operations director at Omega stated “HOMAG is a vital partner of Omega, and its solutions are fully integrated into the business. Over 95% of the machines in our factory are made by HOMAG. We believe that this strong partnership helps us to achieve our goals, as it ensures that we have the best possible plant list to meet our quality and future growth plans. This is all backed up with HOMAG’s top-class customer support package.” Expanding on the selection process for the new machines England went on to say “When selecting a supplier of new equipment, good value for money, product reliability and customer service are our key drivers. “Our projects engineer, Paul Robinson, is involved in the selection of our shop-floor machinery. He has worked for Omega since 2016 and, at his previous companies, has gained vast experience of operating many other woodworking machinery brands.

INDUSTRY “Over the years, Paul has developed a wealth of product expertise. Since joining Omega, he has visited the HOMAG UK Open House and German manufacturing facilities many times to further expand his knowledge.

Collaborative and trusted solutions Commenting on the purchasing process Robinson said: “When investigating options for new wood processing machinery it often involves in-depth discussions with the HOMAG sales representatives. This helps us to select the best solution for our exact production requirements. HOMAG never attempts to sell us features that would be superfluous for our production needs. This makes the buying process easier as we have complete trust in the sincerity and integrity of all the team at HOMAG.”

Many of our machine operatives have also attended HOMAG’s training courses in Germany. The training has been particularly useful if the new machines they are operating have more advanced manufacturing capabilities.”

If you would like a demonstration or more information on HOMAG’s machinery or software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424. T: +44 (0)1332 856500 E: info-uk@HOMAG.com www.HOMAG.com

Coinciding with a full rebrand, IDS will now offer 20 additional Durasein decors, taking the total number of designs in the range up to 60 – all of which are stocked in depth in the UK and available for nationwide delivery in 2448 hours. Durasein boasts over 20 years of manufacturing expertise and operates in over 40 countries worldwide. IDS first formed an exclusive distribution agreement with the

manufacturer in 2019 to offer a specially selected range of solid surface product for the UK and Ireland markets. The latest product development further extends the UK specific offer in response to current market trends, broadening the design scope for a diverse customer base including fabricators, kitchen and bathroom retailers and designers. The enhanced Durasein collection includes a range of curated styles, shades and colours spanning luxurious onyx, concrete and marble effects, plus plain and particle-based whites and accent colours. New additions include four decors created specifically for IDS which respond to the needs of the UK market: Blanca Carrera, an elegant marble design featuring distinctive veining; Sandstone, a warm organic flecked décor; Fossil, a soft grey concrete design; and Blush, a muted concrete design with a subtle pink hue. The enhanced range also offers a newly updated collection of sleek and stylish cast sinks and bowls for kitchens and bathrooms, all manufactured in-house by Durasein. Steven Fisher, Product Director for Solid Surface at IDS, says: “The newly extended Durasein range has been specially selected for the UK market and is on point to meet the diverse surfacing needs of designers and fabricators working on projects in the retail, hotel and leisure sectors, offices, airports, healthcare and educational settings, as well as many applications around the home including kitchens and bathrooms. “We’ve added more marble and stone designs into the new range as we know there’s demand for this luxurious aesthetic in a material that offers significant design, performance and easy-maintenance benefits. Fisher adds: “We are offering customers rapid access to solid surface for fabrication as we’ve made a commitment to hold stock on the ground of the entire range of 60 decors, not just some of it. It’s a unique proposition to have a UK specific range that is all held in stock in this country, which means we don’t have extended lead times and our customers are not impacted by the ongoing supply issues that are still prevalent in the market.”

INDUSTRY HOT-MELT GLUE SWITCHING ON HOMAG EDGE BANDERS MADE EASIER THAN EVER HOMAG has developed an interchangeable hot-melt glue feature on select edge banding machines. The new system enables the rapid change of glue types, eliminating time-consuming cleaning issues. EVA and PUR hot-melt glues can now be conveniently dispensed separately using the same universal application melting unit. Fast, clean change between EVA and PUR hot-melt glues The new glue feature permits two types or colours of glue to be changed over in a matter of minutes. The unit features two interchangeable containers – suitable for PUR cartridges or EVA granulate – which enable the glues to be conveniently switched. A programmable glue application and gravity feed system ensure that the unit delivers just the right amount of glue for each application. There is no mixing and cross-contamination of glues or time-consuming cleaning required on the unit. Quick and easy maintenance Ergonomically designed handles allow the containers to be removed from or inserted into the melting unit quickly and easily. The application unit can either be replaced without cleaning the machine or simply emptied and refilled in the machine. A self-purge function to maintain the integrity and efficiency of the glue system is incorporated. Three options to choose from Due to their resistance to humidity and heat Polyurethane (PUR) hot-melt adhesives are ideal for edge banding furniture to be used in humid rooms such as bathrooms, kitchens and laboratories. EVA (ethyl vinyl acetate), a copolymer adhesive is, however, the carpenter’s preferred lower-cost choice of adhesive for other applications where these humidity resistance properties are not necessary. To cater for all edge banding applications and manufacturing requirements HOMAG has created three versions of the glue processing unit: One for processing both EVA and PUR alternately (new), one for exclusively processing EVA (new) or – as before – one for exclusively processing PUR. These options are available on HOMAG’s customisable EDGETEQ S-240/S-300 and S-380 profiLine series of edge banding machines.

INDUSTRY

RISING ENERGY COSTS MAKE FOR A LONG COLD WINTER Shell and BP both announced record billion-pound quarterly profits in early May, at the same time as announcing record rises in energy costs both to consumers and to industry. The war in Ukraine looks like dragging on with sanctions being applied to Russian oil and gas. So what can we, in the woodworking industry do about this? Ranheat Engineering are the longest established UK manufacturer of industrial wood-waste burning equipment and a market leader. Managing Director, Chris Franklin looks at ways in which our industry can save money. The largest cost to the UK wood-working industry is energy after raw material costs. In most factories the single largest user of power is the dust extraction system. Within the dust extraction system is the main extraction fan followed often by a transfer fan to transfer the wood-waste to a storage silo or container for off-site disposal. Typically the main extract fan can be 75kw and the transfer fan 18 kW. Both running for the whole time the factory is working. Often with little or no waste being transferred.

So what is the biggest single cost to UK industry, not just the wood-working industry? Well, it is compressed air. UK industry spends more on producing compressed air than any other source. Without compressed air entire UK industries would grind to a halt, often referred to as the “4th Utility” next to gas, electricity and water. It is estimated that as much as 10% of all energy costs is in producing compressed air. Walk around your factory at night just after work has finished and listen to the air leaks. Often because air is free people assume compressed air is cheap. Often one of the best ways to make more profit is to cut down on costs, wood fired heating, lower energy costs on your extraction system and cutting down on wasted air are three simple areas to approach.

Ranheat are developing a range of centreless augers that are able to operate vertically to raise the material up into a storage silo then from the silo to feed a wood burning appliance. Or better still choose a Ranheat bunker silo that does away with a transfer fan at all. Vertical screws typically use 3 kW compared to 18 kW of a transfer fan. If invertors are added the main extract fan can also be reduced in energy consumption typically a 10% reduction in speed of rotation is a 50% reduction in energy use. Using your on-site wood-waste to heat the factory, with rising energy prices is the obvious solution to your heating needs. This winter will be even more reason to look at using your wood-waste to heat your factory. 3-4 tonnes of wood-waste per week will heat a 20,000ft2 factory.

INDUSTRY PROFILE KNOW YOUR RACKING! In today’s market, businesses need to make every investment count. Nick Betteley, Technical Director at Stakapal, explains how storage can provide long term value to your business. Select the correct racking and it can provide a number of benefits to your business. A bespoke racking system designed to your requirements can potentially avoid the need to rent bigger premises. It can help you minimise stock damage by creating a seamless inventory and flow of goods and create a safer environment for your employees. When it comes to selecting your timber storage there are numerous challenges to be met including the best way to maximise your space and finding a solution that works with a broad range of stock profiles. Here we introduce you to the range of racking options that are available and the benefits they offer to your operation.

Cantilever Racking When storing long lengths of softwoods and hardwoods Cantilever Racking is probably the most commonly utilised system. Consisting of vertical self-supporting columns manufactured from fabricated steel for strength and safety the system utilises horizontal arms that can be easily adapted for ease of access and to suit changing stock

24

www.p-j-production.com

profiles. Available as single-sided racks that fit flush against the wall or in a double-sided configuration creating storage on either side of the central column. Cantilever Racking offers 100% accessibility to your products and is a highly versatile system that can be designed to suit any pack size enabling you to fully maximise the available area. Our range includes Conventional and Free Path Cantilever Racking which can be adapted for use with conventional forklift trucks, side loading type trucks or multi-directional reach trucks. We also manufacture Guided Aisle Cantilever Racking which uses specialist trucks but does offer you the ability to store your timber at a far greater height.

A-Frame / Vertical Storage Racking A-Frame / Vertical Storage Racking is an excellent option for the manual storage and selection of timber away from any mechanical handling equipment. As the name suggests, this type of racking stores items vertically with the length resting on a sloped frame shaped like an ‘A’. Due to its design this system maximises the available floor space yet still gives you the ability to store material up to 6 metres in length. Compartment widths are adjustable and can stack depths from 300mm to 900mm deep. This system can be configured as single sided for storing against a wall or double sided with divider arms or bow dividers.

INDUSTRY PROFILE Pigeon Hole Racking Consisting of separate compartments, Pigeon Hole Racks are ideal for a wide range of relatively small volumes of differing stock profiles. The horizontal configuration means that product is again selected and hand loaded away from forklift trucks and other machinery. Pigeon Holes are divided by vertical beams which can either be fixed in place or adjustable depending on storage needs. This means a range of softwoods and hardwoods including mouldings and profiles can be stored at any one time.

END-TO-END SANDING MACHINE PORTFOLIO

HOMAG AND HEESEMANN AGREE TO PARTNERSHIP HOMAG Group AG and Heesemann Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG have already been working together successfully for several years and in many markets. Now the two companies have agreed on an even more extensive cooperation. HOMAG’s goal is clear: to continue to provide customers with high-performance solutions and an integrated sanding machine portfolio. End-to-end sanding machine portfolio to be retained The scope of HOMAG’s product portfolio has grown considerably in recent years. At the same time, high demand from a large number of customer segments and growth areas requires a bundling of resources in the areas of R&D and production. For this reason, HOMAG has decided to discontinue in-house development and production of wide belt sanding machines. However, the strategic goal of HOMAG to cover the entire process chain in wood processing, which naturally includes sanding, remains constant. Therefore, instead of HOMAG’s own solutions, those of Heesemann will now be made available. In order to continue covering the entire process chain, Heesemann will expand its sanding machine portfolio and offer end-to-end solutions for all segments in the future: from entry-level to high-end solutions. For the entry-level

machines in particular, Heesemann will be drawing on HOMAG’s expertise. HOMAG and Heesemann will also be working closely together in the sales and service network. Service for HOMAG sanding machines will continue to be provided HOMAG will of course continue to provide service (hotline, on-site service and spare parts), for the sanding machines supplied under the BÜTFERING and HOMAG brands. For the sanding machines supplied by Heesemann in the future, Heesemann will take over the corresponding service.

“We at Heesemann are very excited about this great prospect for both companies. It is a unique opportunity to take our long-standing partnership to a new level and once again demonstrate our expertise and innovative strength for the benefit of our customers.” Christoph Giese, Managing Director Heesemann

The new Linea 6015 has an operational footprint of just 6m x 4.7m

HOLZ-HER’S NEW LINEA 6015 BEAM SAW: CUTTING THROUGH THE CONFUSION What stops a smaller manufacturer buying a beam saw? For many, it comes down to three things: space, cost and operator skill. But, what if we told you that HolzHer’s new Linea 6015 beam saw has been designed with all these factors in mind; offering you all the benefits of a beam saw, without the perceived disadvantages. Space can be a big problem for the smaller manufacturer but not with the new Linea 6015 beam saw. With an operational footprint of just 6m x 4.7m, it requires the same amount of space as a sliding table panel saw. Plus, it’s also been designed with a 1,800mm sliding door to the side of the machine, giving you access to over 6m2 of usable storage space beneath the workings of the machine. The machine’s price tag and running costs may also surprise you. Designed to offer exactly what a smaller manufacturer needs, the new Linea 6015 boasts technology that cuts usage costs, labour costs and time. Thanks to Holz-Her’s energy-saving saw concept, it offers an energy saving of up to 46% with each cut and with its time-controlled shutdown, the overall running costs of the machine remain low. Cutting cycles can also be reduced thanks to its three-sheet, book

cutting capabilities and with Opti-Cut software, the margin for error and material wastage is also lowered. Then there’s the Linea’s extreme cutting power. With its optional 11kW sawing unit, it’s perfectly suited to hard materials like solid wood and core board. It also makes the cutting of multiple sheets in one pass simple and effective. It’s energy-saving saw blade has a maximum projection of 68mm and can be adjusted by 20-40mm, whilst it’s newly developed 2.2 kW optimsed pre-scoring system has been designed to offer infinite adjustments with the motor running, saving on set-up time. Its electronically controlled saw carriage (with a feed speed of 0-60m/min, return speed of 70m/min and cutting length of 3100mm) also offers extremely short cycle times and maximum productivity, whilst its software-controlled bidirectional cutting feature, FCM (Fast Cut Mode) can cut grooves in the cutting direction as well as the return. This ensures the shortest possible cycle times for grooving. A light sensor also detects the end of the panel, optimising the cutting stroke.

The Linea 6015’s software and intelligent cutting packages simplify the operations of the machine

28

www.p-j-production.com

The Linea 6015 also comes with air cushioned 1,800 x 600mm support tables and optional end of table rollers to ensure panels can be maneuvered around the bed without

INDUSTRY back strain or risk of panel damage when loading and unloading. Holz-Her’s floating clamp technology – which offers adjustable clamping pressure for delicate materials - also compensates for any irregularities in the panel stack using extremely precise linear guides that are guaranteed for 10 years – standing testament to the build quality of HozHer’s machinery range. The Linea 6015’s powerful software and intelligent cutting packages simplify the operations of the machine, whilst offering maximum precision and speed in every cut. Operated remotely or via the beam saw’s pivoting 21.5” multi-touch monitor, cutting plans can be intuitively programmed, with parts lists uploaded manually or imported from an ERP system as CSV files. Further optimised material and off-cut management programmes are also available, with 3D real-time simulation offering greater insight into the cutting process and stacking sequence of finished workpieces. Holz-Her’s Easy Label module also opens up new possibilities for designing labels tailored to your production. From logos, edging information and data matrix codes for CNC machining to important workpiece information that assists with secondary machining, Industry 4.0 is a reality in the smallest of workshops.

Paul Nightingale, National Sales Manager of Holz-Her UK says: “Is a beam saw more capable and easier to use than a sliding table panel saw? Does it need a less skilled operator? Can it up productivity? Can it deliver on precision? Yes, the Linea 6015 can. Holz-Her has been designing beam saws for many years and now we’ve condensed the very best cutting technology into a compact package that truly benefits the smaller manufacturer. No longer restricted by size, operator skill or price tag, our new Linea 6015 beam saw offers a viable alternative to a traditional table saw.”

The Linea 6015 features innovative clamp management for delicate materials and irregular panel stacks

CASE STUDY

HOFFMANN & LONGWOOD JOINERY PERFECT PARTNERS Longwood Joinery Ltd has been manufacturing quality windows, doors and staircases since 1972, and is a committed member of the British Woodworking Federation (BWF) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). The current owners Paul Shooter and Andrew Humphries took charge in 2008 when the original owners decided to retire. They have a well-deserved reputation for delivering quality products on time and have developed close relations with their customers, and although they supply many of the major house builders, such as Persimmon Homes, Linden Homes and many more, they still offer their individual customers the highest level of project consideration and great value for money. They pride themselves on working to the highest standards within the Industry for performance and quality, with investment in the latest machinery to further enhance and innovate the manufacturing process. Having been Hoffmann customers for many years, (Using the Hoffmann MU-2 in the production of handrails and staircases) Paul and Andrew were keen to bring Hoffmann reliability, accuracy and speed into the window production side of the company. The Hoffmann CB-M End Profiler was designed exactly for this purpose, a resourceful counterprofiling machine for the production of crossbar joints. After various discussions with John Galvin (Director Hoffmann UK), Paul visited the Hoffmann stand at the 2019 Harrogate Woodworking Show for a demonstration of the Hoffmann CB-M. This practical bench top version is ideal for the small and medium size manufacturer. It produces precise tearfree counter profiling on the ends of Georgian bars in furniture, windows and door manufacturing. Two variable speed, counterrotating router motors - left / right – create the counter profile on the end of the bar

accurately and fit without chipping or tearing. The variable speed motors can be adjusted for the optimum speed to produce the best possible finish. Choice of speed is relevant to the profile shape and the wood species. The machine is supplied without tooling, as each customer will require tooling to suit their own particular profiles. The application of this joint would be in Georgian window design, doors and furniture. When sealed double glazed units are used then these profiles are attached to the surface with a dedicated adhesive tape. Paul was so impressed with the demonstration at the Woodworking Show that a sale was agreed there and then. He said recently “The Hoffmann CB-M end profiler has certainly increased the quality of the finished product. We can now cut the glazing bars to suit the required profile of each individual piece allowing a much tighter joint with less filling needed before finishing.” They are using the CB-M to produce Georgian glazing bars on their doors and windows. A classic design, manufactured economically.

PHILLIPS SAW & TOOL TAKES AUTOMATION TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH VOLLMER Established more than 60 years ago, Phillips Tool Co was founded by Ted Phillips in 1959 as a tool and die manufacturing business in the Frankfort, IN area. In 1962, they started sharpening saw blades and welding bandsaw bladeswhich and changed its name to Phillips Saw and Tool (PSAWS). Soon afterwards, the company invested in grinding technology from VOLLMER of America and the company hasn’t looked back since. Local industries started bringing their dull blades into Phillips Tool to get them sharpened. The Phillips toolmakers responded by retrofitting 2 Cincinnati #2 Cutter Grinders, building jigs and fixtures to hold and index saw blades from 7” to 30” diameter. In 1981 Ted hired his son-in-law Jeff Chynoweth who between 1985 and 1988, shifted the company focus to saw blade distribution, servicing and regrinding as this side of the business was outgrowing the tool & die business. INTRODUCTION OF VOLLMER The first CNC installation in the mid 80’s enabled the company to expand its customer base in the woodworking and construction industry and in 1995, the first VOLLMER machine was purchased. Jeff Chynoweth recalls: “Our business grew with the state of Indiana’s growth into automobile production. We started servicing Tier One and Tier Two suppliers to the automakers. We needed to provide tighter tolerances on our saw blades and tools. This led us to VOLLMER and Loroch machines. We put the same demands on VOLLMER that our customers asked of us!” “We needed a machine for servicing customers that were cutting non-ferrous materials that could also undertake periphery grinding, which was the preferred solution for the woodworking industry. VOLLMER was streets ahead of anything else with the best machine design and an easy to use CNC control unit.” This formed a technology partnership that has spanned more than 25 years. Following the installation of the VOLLMER CHF210, PSAWS purchased a VOLLMER CHD250 8-axis top and face grinding machine. By the early 2000s, the woodworking customer base had grown at a steady rate.

32

www.p-j-production.com

NEXT GENERATION Today, the company is housed in a climate controlled 11,000sq/ft shop. “Over the last 15+ years, we have relied heavily on VOLLMER and Loroch machine technology and support - our saw shop looks like a VOLLMER showroom.” “The VOLLMER CHD 270 was a big leap forward for our business and a step-up in technology from machines we had from other suppliers. Nobody else had the capabilities or innovation that VOLLMER offered.” CONTINUAL GROWTH COVID aside, PSAWS continued to grow. However, when the business installed a VOLLMER CPF200 in 2012 and a Loroch EKOSTAR760 in 2013, they realized the need to once again expand, almost doubling the floor area in 2015 to 12,000 sq ft. With the extra floor area PSAWS looked again for more VOLLMER machines to underpin their offer for customers. Jordan Chynoweth recalls: “There are few manufacturers that can process saw blades and bodies above 600mm (24 inches). We spotted a niche and invested in two Gerling GLH brazing machines and a VOLLMER CHP1300 4-axis TCT saw sharpening machine in 2017 for grinding the hook, clearance and face of saws from 80 to 1300mm (3 to 51 inches).”

FEATURE The operating concept with the new multi-function handwheel makes work significantly easier and faster than ever before.” INCREASING AUTOMATION Jordan Chynoweth said: “We have changed the automation system on the 2012 CHD270 machine from the ND230 to the larger capacity ND360 taking automation to the next level.” The ND 360 handling system takes the previous 3-station system up to 6-stations, providing capacity for up to 550 circular saw blades to be loaded automatically. It also permits the integration of up to three grinding centers. “We updated the existing Grind Center by adding the CHF270 side grinder and replacing the ND230 loader with the larger ND360, increasing the number of carts to 6 and increasing the lifting capacity to 32” diameter blades. Both the CHF270 and ND360 were installed at the same time.” The ND 360 handling system has four CNC controlled axes and its double gripper system guarantees extremely quick and stable changeover times. The VOLLMER CHF270 allowed us to target a new market audience.” We are so convinced by the VOLLMER machines and the automation that we added a third machine to the cell earlier this year.” THE FUTURE Despite COVID, our business remained relatively strong through 2020 and the company has re-affirmed its commitment to customer service, ordering an additional two VOLLMER machines that arrived in March 2021. “We have ordered a CHD271 machine that was incorporated into the existing CHF270, CHD270 and ND360 cell to deliver complete automated production autonomy. Early in 2020 we ordered another VOLLMER topper/facer for the ND360, the CHD271 machine completed the 3 machine grinding centre. We also had a major 3-axis rebuild on our existing CHD270 by the VOLLMER techs.”

VOLLMER America Regional Sales Manager, Mr. Shaun Loveless adds: “The CHD271 is a variant of the CHD270 has a completely redesigned saw carrier and the arbor has dampening incorporated. This reduces the existing tolerance of the machine from +/-5 microns to considerably less. Whilst more relevant to the metal cutting sector than the woodworking industry, PSAW customers in both industry segments will benefit from the outstanding level of precision.” As well as the CHD271, PSAWS also has a CHF1300. The cold saw business continues to grow, even through the COVID pandemic. “During the uncertain COVID months of 2020, we updated our Schmidt Tempo Freestyle CNC grinder with the Loroch Evolution machine, which was installed with filtration and chiller.” Jordan Chynoweth concludes: “As a company, we love VOLLMER machines, and the service has always been excellent. Technologically there is nothing in the industry that compares to the VOLLMER machines and this is demonstrated in our service, quality, productivity levels and our ability to consult with customers and develop blade geometries and solutions according to their exact needs. We always reinvest in our business and VOLLMER will always be part of the investment strategy.”

THE NEW COMBI-MR4 WITH DYNAMIC 360° ™ STEERING Since Combilift launched its first C4000 model in 1998, multidirectional capability has been one of the major hallmarks of the company’s wide range of handling solutions. Twenty Four years and thousands of R&D hours later, its latest product takes multidirectional capability to the next level with the Combi-MR4 4-wheel electric reach-truck. This incorporates Combilift’s new Dynamic 360° ™ steering, which provides rotation on each wheel, enabling seamless directional change of the truck while on the move. This allows this extremely agile forklift to work in forward, sideward and crab steer mode, guaranteeing swift operation and excellent manoeuvrability.

To achieve this level of manoeuvrability, Combilift utilised its newly developed-in-house Dynamic 360°™ steering. This novel concept enables operators to manipulate the truck’s positioning and orientation without needing to stop and change

The impetus for the development of this latest product was to offer a multidirectional truck with a very low platform to maximise storage density within racking. The Combi-MR4 is available in two models, with capacity ranges of 2,500Kg 3,000kg and 3,500Kg - 4,500kg respectively, and can operate in aisles as narrow as 2265mm when guided (based on 1200mm deep material). To maximise storage space the configuration of two drive wheels at the rear and two sets of smaller dual front wheels provides a platform height of just 380mm, allowing otherwise redundant lower areas towards the floor to be used. In keeping with Combilift’s common overall design ethos, the highly versatile Combi-MR4 can handle long loads as well as palletised goods with ease, and can load and offload from delivery trucks. Driver comfort and safety are also major considerations, and this new truck definitely delivers the goods from an ergonomic point of view: a high visibility operator cabin, multi-function control joystick, AC-electric power steering and joystick operated hydraulic mast functions all make for a smooth ride and straightforward operation. The articulated rear axle with two rear rubber drive wheels provides optimum traction for outdoor use, while still ensuring nimble and accurate truck placement.

driving mode. This is achieved by simply twisting the control joystick right or left to adjust the wheel positions simultaneously – allowing crab steering and direction change on-the-go. Combilift puts any new product through its paces before it is officially launched to ensure that it is 100% fit for purpose. Following the initial operation of 3,000kg Combi-MR4 units, a 4,500kg model was developed after receiving a request from Combilift’s dealer in the BeNeLux region - Mabo BeNeLux, for a larger capacity unit for their customer TABS (Timber and Building Supplies Holland). One of the Netherlands’

leading suppliers of timber products and building materials, with 104 outlets across the country, TABS has partnered with Combilift and operated its multidirectional trucks for more than 15 years. It now has MR4 trucks at several locations in the Netherlands and is about to take delivery of its 15th and 16th trucks, which will work at its distribution centres in Zaandam and Bleiswijk.

Combilift CEO Martin McVicar: “TABS are delighted with the ongoing successful implementation of their Combi-MR4s and the improved levels of efficiency they offer. I have no doubt that this new additional electric model will grow Combilift’s customer base.”

PROFILE HIMACS EXTENDS BASIN RANGE HIMACS is extending its range by adding nine new versatile basins to its standard bathroom collection. The new HIMACS basins collection includes nine attractive models, flush and top-mounted, providing designers with more design options for bathrooms and washrooms, in both residential and commercial settings. In all cases, designers can achieve seamless and extremely hygienic installations thanks to the properties of HIMACS. Two new squircle top-mounted basins are now available – adding to the existing range which already consisted of square, rectangular and circular shapes. These are designed to sit on top of vanity units or bespoke designed surfaces. The overall range offers design diversity no matter what the project requirements. Mix and match is a very popular option, especially for renovation projects where there is a desire to combine old and new materials and styles for an eclectic design. The warm feeling to the touch which is characteristic of HIMACS and the sleek design of these basins marry perfectly with other materials and surfaces: natural concrete, warm natural wood or vintage tiles for example.

Seven new flush-mounted models have also been added to the range. These basins are designed to be used with a HIMACS work surface, giving a seamless super hygienic finish. The addition of a HIMACS splashback or full wall covering will complete the flawless design. A bathroom needs the highest standards of hygiene and functionality - which HIMACS meets with ease. Its completely seamless finish provides a totally smooth surface, preventing the accumulation of dirt, mould and bacteria. Moreover, its resistance to the most aggressive cleaning agents guarantees a long-lasting durability without any discolouration. All HIMACS basins are manufactured using a high-tech casting process which ensures the highest product quality and maximum design flexibility. The entire range can be seen on the HIMACS website.
