FRONT COVER FEATURE HOMAG’S NEXT GENERATION OF NESTING SOLUTIONS DELIVER GREATER EFFICIENCY, FLEXIBILITY AND PERFORMANCE The demands on modern CNC nesting machines are extensive. On the one hand, they must be efficient to help save materials and resources; on the other hand, they need to provide increased performance and be highly versatile. It is precisely these demands that HOMAG has responded to with the design of its new generation of CNC nesting machines. Improving sustainability, flexibility and performance were all guiding factors in the development of the new models. HOMAG’s nesting machines are engineered to make easy work of machining and dividing panel-shaped materials for carcass furniture production and the dividing and finishing of furniture fronts. They also make the processing of stair stringers and door leaves effortless. With the release of the CENTATEQ N-210 and N-510 CNC machining centres in November 2021, HOMAG has truly redefined nesting. Clever revisions and creative engineering, with a focus on waste reduction and sustainability, have significantly increased the value proposition of these machines. MORE FLEXIBLE WORKFLOW CONFIGURATIONS The new CNC machines not only handle the classic nesting tasks, but also their 5-axis processing capabilities provide added flexibility. The maximum total height in the Z-direction on these new machines has been extended, enabling the processing of material thicknesses up to 260 mm. The new generation of machines is available in both standalone and automated configurations. They can be specified with updated matrix table arrangements to increase both performance and flexibility. In addition to the table structure, the vacuum, air cushion concept, and material handling components have been rethought and further optimised. To improve nonproductive times and setup, the tool changing system has also been updated. AUTOMATION ADAPTATIONS FOR CHANGING PERFORMANCE DEMANDS Performance requirements often change as HOMAG’s customers grow their businesses. To accommodate this, the base machines can be upgraded to meet shifting performance demands with 14 automation options. The performance-enhancing automation programs for the new series were developed for high volume workflow demands. They include, for example, the addition of lifting tables for easier loading of material; automatic belt conveyors for pushing out finished parts; and complete integrations with saw and storage-system combinations or material handling robots.

8

www.p-j-production.com

DYNAMIC SHUTTLE OPERATION The pendulum mode, which allows the operator to continuously swap out parts while the machine runs at the other end of the bed, is extended using a separate vacuum supply and ventilation of the table sections. This highly efficient and seamless alternation between the left and right table sections is extended by ‘dynamic pendulum operation’. In a similar way to the HOMAG console table machines, the vacuum fields are assigned to the table sections and can be controlled individually. HOMAG has also created the ability to dynamically control the machines’ air cushion functions. This means that individual workpieces of different sizes and surface finishes can easily be processed in pendulum mode. MATERIAL YIELD UTILISATION AND PART IDENTIFICATION DRIVES PRODUCTION Sustainability is at the forefront of the utilisation of these machines. They were designed to generate as little material waste as possible. Thus, the nests are optimised via intelligent software solutions to deliver the best possible yield. To ensure parts are identified for secondary processing, such as edge banding, and for assembly after production, barcode labels can be applied to each item. These labels provide valuable information for transporting parts through the production process. For example, the type of material, edge banding information, part size, order number and even part-related graphics and company logos can be added. ACTIVE VACUUM SOLUTIONS - NEW VALVE TECHNOLOGY The new series of nesting machines provide many different table sizes to suit specific needs and requirements. Independent of the table size, three configurations of the automated vacuum field layouts are offered: Classic, Advanced and Premium. The Classic layout is the standard for HOMAG’s earlier nesting models. The field sizes are designed in such a way that the underlying vacuum zones can be applied to concentrate vacuum pressure to any number of common panel sizes.

FRONT COVER FEATURE The Advanced layout creates a more balanced machine. The vacuum field sizes are engineered at both the front and back of the machine to allow for flexible fixturing of a wide range of panel sizes, as well as smaller pre-formatted parts. The Premium layout consists of many small, symmetrical vacuum fields that are controlled individually. With this variant, the operator can activate only one field, for even more flexibility and efficiency in the future. New valve technology has been installed in the table for this purpose. It generates the vacuum output required for nesting workpieces and precisely maintains that vacuum pressure throughout the nesting process so that no excess energy is required. The matrix table option consists of a raised island and groove pattern that has a consistent grid dimension to provide optimal vacuum flow. The transition between the individual matrix table sections has been re-designed so that this transition point is always constant and suction cups can be positioned across these segments without restriction. This is a very beneficial feature for 5-axis machining. MORE OPTIONS FOR TOOL CHANGES AND DRILLING GEARS For short changeover times, the 8-place tool changer riding along the X-axis of the machine can be selected as standard. Depending on the variety of machining and application requirements different versions can also be selected to accommodate 14 or 22 tools. The previous benchmark for tool changing times on the HOMAG nesting machines has been significantly reduced and the chip-to-chip tool change times have been improved. Within some of the automated configurations, the changing of the tools can be carried out in parallel with the loading of panels, saving additional time. For those requiring advanced tool changing technology and speed, an X/Y ride-along tool changer is available which can be paired with a second tool changer to provide a combination of speed and flexibility. The new nesting series provides a wide selection of drilling gears with up to 21 different drilling gear units. Various combinations of vertical and horizontal drilling, as well as grooving, can be handled by these units without the machine requiring a tool change. HOMAG’s patented quickchange system for drill bit changes is also incorporated.

5-AXIS PROCESSING ON THE CENTATEQ N-510 BRINGS ADDED VALUE For additional versatility, the proven HOMAG DRIVE5CS 5-axis head is now provided with the CENTATEQ N-510 series. As well as traditional nesting, this series can be used as a conventional CNC machining centre. Parts can be elevated, referenced, and machined on five sides. The new model provides further nesting operations in addition to the typical ones such as part sizing, shaping and vertical drilling. The extra functions include the horizontal drilling for dowels, the creation of mitres with a 350 mm saw blade, and the efficient machining of solid wood components such as stair stringers and door components. GREATER SUSTAINABILITY AND SERVICE LIFE Commenting on the innovative design of the newly released models, Simon Brooks, HOMAG UK’s managing director said: “As well as configuring the new nesting machines to meet specific technical and functional applications, these nesting CNCs are engineered with a focus on conserving resources and achieving sustainability. “Times for tool changing have been shortened whilst the extraction of dust and the cleaning of the spoil board have been significantly improved. Both the new CENTATEQ models are highly efficient, increasing yield and decreasing waste. “Engineering advances have minimised the use of electricity and compressed air, and maximised dust collection. Where possible, machine movements and operating sequences have been combined and shared to increase the service life of machine components and bring additional value to HOMAG customers.” If you would like a demonstration or more information on HOMAG’s machinery or software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424. INDUSTRY FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN INVESTING IN DUST EXTRACTION Investing in the right dust extraction for your workshop isn’t always a straightforward process. Here, we ask Matt Pearce, Managing Director of TM Machinery and the exclusive distributor of AL-KO dust extraction units in the UK, to breakdown the key factors to consider before making your purchase… “When it comes to choosing the right dust extraction model for your business, it’s important we ask our customers the right questions,” begins Matt. “What material are you processing? How many machines do you need to run at once? Will the machines run all day? And, how big is your workshop? These questions will ultimately determine the right dust extraction solution for you. “From a customer’s stand point, it is important to consider plans for the future. Are you looking to add more or different machines to your factory floor, increase production or change your offering? Thinking long-term could save you time and money but we appreciate this is often easier said than done.” That’s where mobile units like the AL-KO Power Unit range come into their own. With a static system, future expansion isn’t always straightforward. Matt explains, “You have to consider ducting extensions, space for a bigger unit and design and installation costs. With a movable unit, you have the flexibility to add and use multiple power units within a workshop as and when required.” Matt adds, “It’s like a plug-and-play concept. It’s quick and easy to install and it only requires a small footprint.” In addition to this, you must consider if your investment is future proofed. Each AL-KO Power Unit model has been designed and tested in accordance with the European Norm EN 16770 - a regulation that was updated in December 2018 to highlight new risks associated with modern manufacturing – as well as all national standards and CE requirements. “This means AL-KO’s range has been designed to return air that far cleaner than the requested value UK manufacturers need to meet by 2024 – making the AL-KO brand a sound, future-proofed investment for any manufacturer,” says Matt.

AL-KO’s high-performance JET filter

AL-KO built-in Fire Extinguisher

Then there are the day-to-day running costs, ongoing cleaning and maintenance to consider. “With energy bills rocketing, it has never been more important to consider a greener, more cost-effective solution” warns Matt. “Customers often focus on motor sizes when investing in a new extraction system. However, with improved air flow and fan housing design this is becoming less relevant and doesn’t reflect the overall performance of a dust extraction unit. AL-KO’s optimised fan housing coupled with GS and H2 marked energy-efficient motors save energy while still guaranteeing 100% air recirculation without loss of temperature.” Each Power Unit incorporates AL-KO’s Opti Jet®, a unique, high-performance filter cleaning system that offers optimum filter cleaning whilst using the least amount of compressed air possible. Its design - which centres around a large air surge tank – has also been created to reduce energy consumption without comprising on performance. “The Power Unit range also offers integrated frequency converters,” says Matt. “This means the fan only produces the required flow, saving energy and increasing the service life and overall health of the filter.”

12

INDUSTRY Pressure shock resistant outer shell

Power Unit 350P Safety features should also be taken into account, as well as any unexpected extra-cost safety options. “One of the main risks when extracting wood dust is the threat of explosions and fire. To tackle this, AL-KO’s units feature an outer shell that is pressure shock resistant meaning it can be installed in the workshop without external explosion relief. Power Unit models from 250 upwards are also equipped with a thermal sensor and integrated fire extinguishing system. Plus, all models now come with dust compartment sealing plates as standard and optional filling level sensors to reduce dust exposure when emptying and to prevent blockages inside the filter housing.”

Finally, Matt firmly believes that aftercare should not be overlooked. “Does your extraction brand have specialists in the UK that can come and service your unit quickly? Do they carry spare parts? And do they offer a warranty? For TM Machinery, the answer is simply, yes. As the exclusive UK distributor of AL-KO dust extraction units, we know our product range inside out and our engineers have been trained directly by AL-KO. We offer a reliable, trusted service which is a must when working with any business. As a result, we can offer our customers the very best Germanengineered dust extraction solutions that will stand the test of time and the ongoing changes to workplace law in the UK.”

LAUNCH OF COMBILIFT’S NEW XLE MODEL The Combi-XLE model from Irish materials handling specialist Combilift is the latest addition to its impressive range of electric forklifts. In line with the growing demand for electric powered equipment, this multidirectional truck with up to 5-ton lift capacity, combines emission-free operation with powerful performance for a wide range of industries and applications. The original engine powered XL C-Series model was developed to address the requirements of tough working environments such as those in the timber, concrete and steel sectors. The new Combi-XLE incorporates the same key design features as its earlier counterpart such as high ground clearance, large cushioned front and rear tyres and a spacious cab, allowing smooth operation on semi rough terrain whilst offering a high level of driver comfort. With sustainability ever higher on the agenda, Combilift further helps its customers achieve their environmental

goals with its versatile “3 forklifts in 1” models, which work inside and out, reducing fleet size and thereby their carbon footprint. A hallmark of all Combilift products is the ability to increase storage capacity without expanding the size of a facility, resulting in lower energy usage and associated costs such as heating, lighting and maintenance, which is of significant benefit to the environment and the workforce. Noise pollution and carbon emissions, which can impact on the health and well-being of people as well as wildlife, is also no longer an issue thanks to electric power. Drivers, employees and visitors on site appreciate the quiet operation, as do neighbouring residents and businesses, particularly in urban areas. The Combi-XLE incorporates up-to-the-minute technology such as the patented all-wheel traction that reduces tyre wear, load swing and enhances braking. Also included is a newly developed, patented Eco-Steer System which provides a smaller turning radius and improved user experience. Since Electric powered trucks do not have traditional combustion engines, or hydraulic transmissions, there is no longer any need to check and top up engine fluids / lubricants, resulting in longer intervals between services, ultimately saving costs. The use of toughened, eco-friendly water-based paint also dramatically reduces the amount of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) during build. “The technology we have incorporated into the Combi-XLE means that its performance is equally on a par with diesel or LPG powered forklifts when it comes to handling very bulky and heavy loads, whilst of course offering a greener operation,” said Combilift CEO and Co-Founder Martin McVicar. “We made our first electric C-Series over 18yrs ago, and now over 60% of the trucks we manufacture are electric, with availability in almost all models across our range. As more and more of our customers are opting for electric power it is obvious that they are as committed to sustainability and a circular economy as we are.”

Customer testimonial: IJM Timber Frame Monaghan was one of the first customers to take delivery of the new C5000XLE. Director Mickey McKinney comments: “We’re extremely happy with our new electric truck, and one of the biggest factors we have noticed with it is how affordable it is to run. The battery life is extremely impressive, we only charge the truck twice a week, every Monday and Wednesday. We have noted a significant reduction in the cost of running the electric machine, and are especially impressed with the fact that the ignition automatically switches itself off when the driver leaves the cab rather than having to do that part manually – saving on battery use, but also keeping truck operating hours low.”

INDUSTRY SUPERIOR DUST EXTRACTION WITH ELCON WALL SAWS To help minimise dust exposure to operators, Elcon have developed and patented an award-winning dust collection system, LIMPIO. As standard Elcon panel saws have an effective extraction point from the enclosed saw head. The majority of the blade sits within the saw guard during cutting providing adequate dust removal for most operations. When cutting fibrous or cementitious boards such as MDF, Gypsum or GRP on a regular basis, additional extraction methods should be considered to minimise operators exposure to potentially harmful dust. For maximum extraction efficiency the LIMPIO system includes a rear dust capture tray. With its own secondary extraction point that travels directly behind the saw head whether cutting vertically or horizontally. The point of cut is almost totally enclosed, sandwiched, with the machine extracting dust from both sides of the cut. Dust emission values are reduced to less than 0.5 mg/ m3. The LIMPIO system is available on the majority of the Elcon range. Machines cater for all standard sheet material sizes as well custom built frames for bespoke applications. For more information on the Elcon range of vertical panel saws contact a member of the Daltons Wadkin team.

Q&A INDUSTRY Q&A

PJP EXCLUSIVE Q&A WITH MICHAEL WEINIG (UK) LTD MD, MALCOLM CUTHBERTSON

Q: Businesses have had to adapt quickly since the COVID outbreak. How has the pandemic impacted your business and has it changed your approach to business? A: The completely unexpected and unforeseen COVID pandemic has hit every area of our daily lives. Not only have we seen many people lose loved ones and suffer tragedy but we have seen a marked shift in many people’s recognition of a positive work/life balance. This can be seen with enlightened employers giving employees the option to work from home rather than remain office based. Recognition of the value of an employee comes from what they contribute to the success of a business, not where they work. Weinig UK has always had a very flat structure and functioned with a high degree of trust, which only needed minor adjustments to cater for the changes forced upon us by the pandemic.

This, plus the speedy implementation of a coherent in-house COVID-19 policy and our existing technical hotline, online support services and webshop, has allowed for Weinig UK’s sales, service and after-care teams to continue to operate effectively. Q: We understand you’ve had a bumper trading year. What do you believe are the reasons behind this? A: Somewhat surprisingly, 2021 has been a very good year for Weinig UK on many fronts. As well as retaining a fit and healthy workforce that was committed to the business throughout the pandemic, we have also secured a high level of order inflow throughout the year. This started at the end of 2020 when wood processing companies, who had been very busy during the summer lockdown, realised they had made exceptional levels of profit and decided to invest rather than contribute to HMRC. This was given a further boost by the introduction of the Super Deduction tax break, which allows customers to take advantage of a 130% capital allowance on qualifying plant and machinery investments and a further 50% first-year allowance for qualifying special rate assets. With good profit levels and the scope to take tax relief, it has been a winning formula for Weinig UK.

Q: Have you seen a shift in demand for any particular products or services since the pandemic?

A: Our business has grown significantly across all market segments in the last year. During the summer of 2020, it was the solid wood sector that benefitted most. According to the ONS, 48% of UK homeowners made home improvements during the first lockdown, spending £110.3 billion - an increase of 30% when compared to 2019. This equated to over 5 million people completing garden projects, including the building of pagodas and decking and 1.5 million people building summer houses and garden offices. The panel processing sector was harder hit over the summer months, especially those working in the shopfitting and exhibition sectors. However, it’s bounced back due to heightened demand for new homes, kitchens, bedroom furniture and home offices, with the 2021 JKMR Fitted Kitchen Market Overview suggesting independent kitchen studios have had their strongest kitchen sales in 10 years. Q: Are we seeing new manufacturing trends emerging or attitudes changing and why might these benefit Weinig UK? A: The pandemic itself has not given rise to any new significant manufacturing trends but it has renewed the awareness of our industry’s skills shortage. This was a wellknown and recognised challenge in our industry which has been made worse by the isolation of employees during the pandemic. Only a few key workers absent could virtually close a factory. This in turn, has renewed the industry’s focus on Weinig’s simple machinery set-up and easy operation. Not only can a machinery manufacturer make a machine easier and quicker to set, they can also make it safer. These two attributes go hand in hand with the Weinig design philosophy and have come to the fore in these unprecedented times. Q: Has Brexit had its part to play in the company’s evolution? And if so, how? A: The effect of Brexit can easily be summed up in two words - more paper! Real trading has not been affected by the UK leaving the EU, however the paperwork burden on importers has increased significantly in the area of custom’s documentation. Without a knowledge of all the various forms and procedures required, importing goods into the UK from the EU would be an obstacle. This could open up business opportunities for many by bringing manufacturing ‘on-shore’ to benefit the whole UK economy. Q: What actions have you put in place to combat any disruption caused by Brexit? A: In advance of Brexit, Weinig UK increased the value of its stockholding of spare parts to combat possible delays. This proved a wise move and is something we have maintained.

INDUSTRY Q&A

Q: Do you believe physical trade fairs and events will be able to continue or do you see the industry moving to a digital format? A: I suggest that the industry sector will polarise between industrial scale customers and SME’s. Industrial scale customers will look for large, well-resourced trade fairs where they will be able to see state-ofthe-art machines and systems from multiple manufacturers who are presenting the latest innovations heavily influenced by Industry 4.0 and the IoT. SME’s who are typically purchasers of individual machines rather than systems will research smarter, using the internet to narrow a search down followed by visits to local companies. This way, an SME will be assured of local support at all levels to ensure their investment remains in first class condition during its lifecycle. Therefore, it will be the large international fairs that will survive and prosper and under resourced and under supported local trade shows will not. Of course many prospective machinery purchasers will enter the digital world before attending any trade event international or local - to judge its relevance. This is where the digital format will play a major part. Q: Does this offer new opportunities for Weinig? A: In recent times, Weinig UK has invested in its showroom and demonstration facilities to create a welcoming environment for any prospective customer, large or small. Not only have we invested in the tangible assets with over 20 machines available for live demonstrations, we have also developed our most important asset - our staff. As a result of travel restrictions, we have become more self-sufficient in the UK and the depth and breadth of our in-house knowledge has increased significantly.

Q: What can we expect from Weinig UK in the next 12-18 months?

This has also led us to launch our extensive in-house event programme, Connect. Dedicated to the production needs of the woodworking industry, each event in the Connect series focuses on a specific application in solid wood or panel processing and offers visitors an exclusive opportunity to engage with machinery experts, explore the very latest technology first hand and experience one-to-one machinery demonstrations. We stick rigidly to our philosophy of selling solutions to problems and not just to flogging machines, so we have to support this with knowledge.

A: For many years, the Weinig brand has operated in the middle to upper value sectors of our industry and somewhat overlooked smaller manufacturers. It has taken a few years but our product range is now highly competitive on price with a superb range of smaller, but no less efficient, machines for the local joiner or sawmill. Over the coming years, we will increase our focus on these companies so they can access the core values of the Weinig brand in the same way industrial customers have done for many years. Whether you are spending £30k or £3million, it is a very important decision for those involved and we recognise that.

BRIDEC SELECTS HOMAG UK FOR SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY AND SERVICE LEVELS Improving production speed and manufacturing capabilities were the key elements in the decision to buy new HOMAG machinery at Bridec Melamine Boards. The company directors made the strategic move to invest in their production plant for several reasons. Primarily, they wanted to create a technologically advanced machine shop to enable the company to venture into a slightly different market. They also believed the time was right to replace older HOMAG machines that had served Bridec well for many years. Bridec has produced melamine boards for a range of interior product retailers since 1972. With its Wessex based furniture brand being a market leader in the contract furniture sector. Its products are in demand for student accommodation, nursing homes and bedroom, kitchen and bathroom furniture. The company has 50 employees working from its 100,000+ sq ft production and storage facilities. The HOMAG equipment Bridec recently acquired consists of the DRILLTEQ V-200 vertical CNC processing centre, a DRILLTEQ D-500 horizontal drilling and dowel insertion CNC machine, a 4-axis CENTATEQ P-110 CNC processing centre, and an EDGETEQ S-380 edge banding machine. In addition, Bridec has recently ordered a CABTEQ S-200 case clamp and a SAWTEQ B-300 panel dividing saw.

26

www.p-j-production.com

Expanded and enhanced production capabilities The new HOMAG technology has given Bridec significant additional production capabilities. Commenting on this, Bridec’s managing director Alastair Pollard said: “Our production staff find that the HOMAG Drillteq V-200 vertical CNC processing centre is perfect for drilling on the surface and all four edges of a workpiece. Added to this, the routering capability provides an extremely versatile production solution. In addition, the machine has zero setup time which makes it ideal for both our short production runs as well as our large batch runs. “With our EDGETEQ S-380 edge banding machine, we can now economically ‘laser edge’ panel products with an invisible glue line without additional costs. As a result of the extended and much-improved production competencies the HOMAG machinery has delivered, we have been able to diversify our product offering and are now profitably growing and winning more contracts.” HOMAG’s superb product and service support wins the day As part of their extensive selection process, Bridec’s directors assessed the equipment and service benefits of four leading wood processing machinery suppliers. They opted for HOMAG as their preferred supplier for multiple reasons including, competitive pricing, UK based aftersales support, excellent parts availability, and the past performance of their HOMAG machinery.

FEATURE The 7-axis (extendible to 11) maestro robot, developed for windows and doors painting lines, has also been updated: new devices and software for an even faster change of colour, ideal for “batch 1” production needs. Key player is the new compact xl sprayer designed to satisfy a higher production capacity and ensure a perfect handling of the overspray in the spraying booth. Combined with the excimatt innovative excimer UV system, for an exceptional super-opaque finishing, a surprisingly silky effect, (if requested) and an incomparable surface resistance thanks to the absence of mattifying agents in the product. Indeed, excimatt allows for a mechanical micro-texturing to be achieved on the layer of paint applied. This replaces the opaqueness achieved using chemical additives that would normally reduce the scratch resistance on the final painted surface. This technology is extremely effective when treating flat, shaped surfaces, and on the profile, thanks to specific Superfici devices for three-dimensional spraying. Excimatt can be applied in roller lines or in thin layers for flat surface painting, and in spray lines to finish shaped panels and edges. •

maximum focus on the environment and cutting consumption, thanks to particular energy saving devices that reduce air and water volumes needed for ventilation and cleaning; fast, first class cleaning, thanks to the filters with automatic change, an innovative, fast cleaning system for the paint recovery unit, and air circulation conditions that are always optima in the spraying environment; an even simpler, more integrated use with other SCM group technologies thanks to the new Maestro Active Finishing software control.

CASE STUDY “I JUST WISH I’D BOUGHT ONE SOONER!” A manufacturing company in Kent has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on waste disposal and heating. Pandor Ltd is a bespoke door and panel manufacturer, making fire doors, acoustic doors, panelling and door frames to order. The company was established in 2014 and operates from an industrial unit in Sittingbourne. Like many manufacturing companies, Pandor was hiring skips each week to take away its manufacturing waste, and having to use space heaters to offset the cold of the workshop in winter. As a result, the management team decided to invest in a new wood waste heater which could solve both those issues whilst saving the company money. MD of Pandor, Mike Hill says: “It just made sense to invest in a wood waste heater! I’d seen other companies use them, so they’ve been on my wish-list for a while, but now just seemed the right time to invest in one rather than keep paying for services like waste disposal and heating.” A bit of research led Mike to Wood Waste Technology, which comes highly recommended for its British-made wood waste heaters. After a quote and site survey, Pandor Ltd ordered a WT10 heater, which was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers in February this year. Mike says: “Buying a wood-waste heater is such a sensible decision as it offers such good value for money. I just wish I’d bought one sooner! The team at Wood Waste Technology was so helpful, and the heater is fantastic. We’ve put in the biggest heater we had space for, as we generate so much waste wood every week, and we really wanted to reduce our reliance on skips and how much waste we send to landfill. I’d highly recommend that any wood-related manufacturing businesses investigate the benefits of investing in a wood waste heater.” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “We’re delighted to have helped Pandor Ltd save money on heating and waste disposal. We’re happy to have a no-obligation chat with any business who is looking into alternative solutions, to help people understand whether it’s the right investment to make.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and

design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers. In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. CASE STUDY

HSL CHAIRS – SITTING COMFORTABLY WITH MASTERWOOD HSL Chairs have boosted their production again by adding their 4th Masterwood through-feed CNC in just over 5 years. HSL are a family run business, producing high quality furniture for over 50 years. With a head office and factory in Batley, West Yorkshire, just around the corner from where it all began, they now have over 500 employees. Their manufacturing process had been very traditional and labour intensive, using band saws and routers to machine the various parts needed for the frames of their renowned chairs.

The company decided to look at CNC and turned to Masterwood for solutions. After discussing their needs and seeing a machine being demonstrated, they ordered their first CNC, the MW1538M through-feed, which was installed in early 2016. When asked why HSL chose Masterwood to supply their CNC machine, Manufacturing and Design Director Kevin Wall said “We spoke to other companies, but we felt that with Masterwood we got more quality and strength”. Within a year, HSL saw a dramatic change in their production, most importantly how much time could be saved, and so placed an order for a second machine. With the possibilities that the new technology offered, they started to redesign their existing products, making the base and foundations the same but requiring less variation in components. Kevin said “It enabled us to reduce the problems with our existing products. The internal frames were much improved, preventing the inaccuracies we’d previously experienced. We were able to use the CNC to router the pieces, giving us far better accuracy”. “It reduced our time and made assembly easier, resulting in a more productive workforce. We control the quality right from the start of the product, until it goes out the door. If the frame is right, we have the accuracy all the way through the factory. We’ve decreased the number of parts

CASE STUDY we have to rework or adjust, saving us time. We would not have been able to grow like this without the CNCs”. As production and demand continued to increase for HSL, a third CNC was added in December 2018, then a fourth in June 2021, another MW1538M. Machine operator Rob said “Not only has it increased the output we are getting from the machines, but it’s increased the production through the factory and the final products we can get out the door as we’re the first point of production.” We work more efficiently, we get as much as we can out of a sheet, we are going green, we want to not only be as efficient as we can but as good for the plant as we can. It’s pointless buying responsibly sourced timber if we’re throwing half the sheet into a skip. We get much more out of a sheet than we would previously, with smaller parts out of offcuts and parts that would be too small for someone to safely work on traditional machines. We have two of us that run the four Masterwood CNC machines, we’ve got it timed so while one is cutting one is being unloaded, there’s very little standing about. The machines are our main work horses, we couldn’t get the quality that we’ve got now without them. At the start with the one machine, we only needed that amount of capacity, but as we progressed we learnt how we could get quicker and get more production out of the machine. FEATURE

NEW HOMAG WOODWOP SOFTWARE MAKES WOOD PROCESSING EFFORTLESS With the release of the latest generation of woodWOP in Q4 2021, HOMAG has dramatically improved the functionality of its market-leading CNC programming software. This most recent edition is branded woodWOP 8. UNPARALLELED SUCCESS STORY The woodWOP success story began with its launch in 1991 and its development now spans over 30 years. The success of the woodWOP software is unparalleled within the wood processing industry. Since its launch, more than 30,000 CNC machines have been equipped with woodWOP and 60,000 licenses have been sold to satisfied customers. At the heart of this easy-to-use software is the innovative large graphic area in which the workpiece is displayed in three dimensions. Trimming and drilling or saw cuts are programmed quickly and easily by entering the machining parameters and are displayed realistically in the graphic.

36 38

www.p-j-production.com

SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENT LEAP MADE IN COLLABORATION WITH PROFESSIONAL CARPENTERS HOMAG has always excelled at involving its customers in the improvement of its products. This collaboration has been continued with the further enhancements of the woodWOP software. HOMAG’s product development team worked closely with professional carpenters to evaluate the developmental requirements of the software to produce the superior product woodWOP 8. The newly developed software now provides woodworkers with practical wizards for easier processing. This has made working with the woodWOP software even more convenient, user-friendly and ultimately faster than working with its predecessor.

FEATURE KEY INNOVATIONS OF WOODWOP 8 AT A GLANCE 1. CONTOUR WIZARD PROVIDES IMPROVED SUPPORT FOR BEGINNERS New workpieces can be programmed more conveniently. For example, template files will be stored for circles, L-shapes or other curved components. This has a significant advantage in terms of time savings and it reduces novice operator problems. 2. FEATURE RECOGNITION FOR THE AUTOMATIC ATTRIBUTE IDENTIFICATION With the feature recognition technology holes, grooves and slots are directly recognised in a 3-D workpiece model. The appropriate machining macro is generated for automatic subsequent machining. This represents a significant acceleration in the conversion from CAD import to the machining program. The optimal use of existing data is also ensured. 3. FORMULA VIEW AND ADDITIONAL HELP GRAPHICS TO SIMPLIFY OPERATION The woodWOP 8 programming process is faster and easier than before, with incorrect operation minimised. The software’s variable table has also been extended and upgraded to deliver new operational possibilities. Minimum and maximum values can be defined, selection lists can be created and help graphics can be stored for illustration. New properties such as ‘Hide’ (hide line) and ‘Boolean’ (input via checkbox) along with two views - the list view and form view - make programming clearer. 4. GLUEING WIZARD FOR EFFICIENT EDGE BANDING The glueing wizard is integrated directly into woodWOP 8. With this wizard, all work steps for edge banding are generated automatically after defining the contours and corners. The revised technology database provides support for situation-dependent inputs, C-angles and heating power. The import of edge images from external CAD systems is also possible with the new wizard. So an even faster creation of programs with edge glueing is ensured. 5. FORMULA WIZARD FOR THE EASY CREATION OF COMPLEX FORMULAS The new formula wizard makes creating formulas extremely easy. The user has everything in view in the multi-line formula field. Building blocks such as mathematical functions, variables and conditions are at the user’s fingertips for assembling his formulas.

The formula components are highlighted in colour. This means that even complex formulas are clearly displayed. In addition to the formula result, partial results can also be calculated. These useful features support the simple creation of extensive and variable programs. MASS CHANGES TO MACROS FOR QUICK AND EASY ADJUSTMENTS With the transfer of parameter values, mass changes to macros can be made quickly and easily in just four steps, as outlined below: 1. Make changes in a macro. 2. Transfer one or all parameters to the parameter clipboard. 3. Select all other macros to be changed. 4. Insert the parameter value(s). SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENTS AND ADDED VALUE Commenting on the new software, Simon Brooks, HOMAG UK’s managing director said: “The development of the woodWOP software has been incredibly well thought out. The new and updated functions of the software make wood processing operations safer, easier and quicker. “The latest version brings great added value and, like all previous editions of woodWOP, is intuitive to use. A notable increase in functionality, along with time-saving operation characterise the new woodWOP 8 software.” For more information on the new and updated features of woodWop 8 visit the news section of the HOMAG UK website to watch the woodWOP 8 presentation video and download the product brochure. Biesse Brema Eko 2.2

BIESSE & LAMELLO A SOLID PARTNERSHIP Over the last 15 years, global woodworking machinery supplier, Biesse and Swiss fixings specialist, Lamello, have been working in partnership to create innovative solutions that have changed the way CNC users join wood and panels and eliminated the need for glue. Now, with the continual development of Biesse’s bSolid software and Lamello’s award-winning P-System, it’s never been easier to increase productivity and significantly reduce the production time and labour costs commonly associated with furniture manufacturing and assembly.

Lamello aggregate in tool-holder

“All of our CNC machines are predisposed to work with Lamello’s P-System,” says Paul Willsher, Wood UK Commercial Director at Biesse UK. “We pride ourselves on offering innovative and flexible machining solutions to our customers. That’s why our machines have been designed to work effectively with Lamello’s unique CNC connectors.” It’s this commitment to problem-solving that has formed the framework of this successful partnership. “When we talk to a customer, we don’t just focus on machinery. It’s our job to understand our customer’s processes and ultimately, find ways to make their manufacturing methods more efficient, whilst improving on quality. Working with forward-thinking companies like Lamello allows us to offer our customers options and not conform to the ‘one size fits all’ approach.” Available for demonstration at Biesse UK’s Tech Centre in Daventry, the Brema Eko 2.2 vertical boring machine and Rover A 5-axis pod and rail CNC showcase just how easy it is to integrate Lamello’s fixings into your production. Both offer one-hit machining – with the whole process being completed on one machine – which in turn, offers exceptional speed, accuracy and consistency when machining Lamello’s P-system grooves. “When using Lamello’s joining solutions on the Eko 2.2, it’s c-axis turns the Lamello aggregate in both the X and Y direction, eliminating the need for a second aggregate altogether,” explains Paul. “The machine has also been designed with an 8-position tool changer that is fully programmable. This means the operator can easily switch between the required tools when changing direction without incurring additional set-up time. This offers a simple, fast and precise drilling solution for both surface and/or corner processing when using the P-System. Alternatively, the Rover A uses a 5-axis head that enables the P-System grooves to be cut at any angle, offering huge time-saving potential without impacting on the overall quality.”

38

www.p-j-production.com

PROFILE Both machines are operated by Biesse’s bSolid 3D CAD/ CAM software. “Our software really sets us apart. When it comes to Lamello’s P-System, it is the only fixing in Biesse’s portfolio that is supplied with its very own macro. It’s been designed exclusively by Biesse, for Biesse and as a result, we have the ability to adapt the macros for customers if required,” explains Paul. “This means, if our customer’s production methods change at any point, our software can be adapted to meet their needs. Plus, if they want to start using Lamello at a later date or choose to incorporate a different Lamello fixing into their manufacturing processes, it only takes a few minutes for us to dial into their machine and turn the programme on completely free of charge. It really is that simple. All that is left is for them to buy the correct tooling to complete the job.” What’s more, the macro is really user-friendly and offers you a full simulation of the workpiece during the cutting process. “This highlights each stage of the cycle and allows for the user to change the position of the workpiece or individual machinery components before running the process fully,” says Paul. “These visual prompts can help the operator preempt any programming errors which could cause material wastage and production delays.” Lamello’s macro can also be configured to only show fixings relevant to an individual business. “This simplifies the process even more,” admits Paul. “And, when a new product comes to market, we work with Lamello to incorporate the new fixing into our software. The new macro is then supplied to our customers at no additional cost. We even train our customers on how to write their very own Lamello macros, allowing them complete control over their production processes, regardless of the application. This shows just how straight-forward the P-System is to use on Biesse’s CNC range and why more and more of our CNC users are choosing the cam and dowel alternative.”

Rover A cutting Lamello

Shaye Chatfield, Lamello Area Sales Manager International for the UK and Ireland adds: “Partnering with leading machinery manufacturers like Biesse allows us to showcase our CNC connectors in the best possible way and with demonstrations available at their UK showroom, you can experience the benefits first hand. Seeing the whole process in action really brings home how simple, fast and strong our fixings are and how simple it is to integrate into your production. Whether you’re using a three, four or five-axis CNC machining centre, Lamello offers a winning solution that can streamline your production and increase efficiencies.” To see how versatile Lamello’s connectors truly are by booking a demonstration at Biesse UK today and put the P-System to the test! INDUSTRY LATHAMS MOVES TO ADDRESS “LACK OF CARBON UNDERSTANDING” IN INDUSTRY Timber and materials supplier James Latham has released a “carbon calculator” designed to direct customers towards more sustainable products. Built in partnership with the BioComposites Department at the University of Bangor, it is based upon detailed research into the embodied and biogenic carbon impacts of the products that they supply. The calculator covers just over 70% of the total Lathams range and focuses on timber products. In time, it will also incorporate composite materials that were out of scope for the first phase. Ewa Bazydlo, Environmental Manager at Lathams, said: “Reducing the environmental impact of our buildings is one of the key issues of our time. However, the understanding around sustainability is not consistent across the industry. “We’ve developed the calculator to help our customers to better understand the sustainability of the materials they choose as well as the expected performance levels that they offer.” The tool calculates environmental impact by looking at the carbon footprint of products, from production through to delivery to Lathams depots. It also looks at how much carbon is stored within the wood’s structure, known as biogenic carbon.

40

www.p-j-production.com

Each product then receives a rating from 1 – 4 (one being the highest, four being the lowest), based on the confidence that Lathams has in the data used for the calculations. The higher the score, the higher the quality of the data points that have been reviewed, for example an audited and published EPD (Environmental Performance Declaration). Lathams will be adding the carbon data to all invoices, delivery notes, and other key documentation to increase visibility around this issue. It is a move that Campbell Skinner, Senior Lifecycle Assessment Analyst at BioComposites Centre, argues is a positive step forward: “Companies have used eco-labels before, but the approach taken by Lathams is really innovative. For the first time that I’m aware, the confidence with which these footprints are presented is rated and placed foremost in the labelling. “Latham’s customers are being given a clear indication of the transparency with which suppliers are reporting their carbon footprints and this will surely nudge more companies towards independently verified reporting schemes, such as EPDs.” Ewa added:

“We needed a mechanism to rank our products and make it quick and easy for our customers to be able to specify more carbon conscious materials. As a large distributor, we have the relationships with the supply chain, which improves our ability to source and analyse the relevant data and make recommendations.

INDUSTRY

“We hope that others in the industry follow our lead and improve the transparency around these products so that we can work together to reduce construction’s impact on the environment.”

For more information about James Latham please visit:

To complement the calculator and share some of the insights from their research, Lathams will be publishing a “Think You Know Carbon?” guide. It will include an overview of the main issues in sustainability, a glossary of key terminology and steps that architects and specifiers can take to be more sustainable in their designs.

www.lathamtimber.co.uk. Follow us on social media: Twitter @lathamsltd Facebook @lathamsltd Pinterest.co.uk/Lathamsltd

It will also include highlights of some of the most sustainable products Lathams stock, from manufacturers such as Accsys Technologies, which produce modified timber Accoya, and UPM Plywood, home to WISA® plywood products.

CASE STUDY WIGNALL’S FIRE DOOR EXPANSION AIDED BY JOINERYSOFT’S COMMERCIAL DOOR SOFTWARE Trading since 1998, Wignalls is a family run business with a strong focus on quality. Their wide product range includes bespoke joinery as well as cubicles, and more recently fire doors. They have recently been awarded their BWF Fire Door Certification and invested in a new CNC machine, edge bander and drum sander. This has meant they can expand their fire door capacity and have recently taken on their biggest fire door job yet, 150 doors for a Nightingale Hospital. They don’t claim to compete with the biggest companies in the marketplace, content to have a reputation for quality and shorter lead times. This means that they pick up the smaller jobs that some of the larger companies aren’t interested in. Estimator, Luke McIntyre, joined the business just as Wignalls expanded into fire doors and has very quickly taken the lead in this side of the business. When he started a year ago his first job was to evaluate software to improve both Wignall’s ability to price fire doors and produce production paperwork. Luke says, “Fire doors aren’t particularly complicated but there are a large number of variables that mean that customers can end up getting confused. We needed to find a friendly way of displaying what the customer is buying without using lots of words on paper. A year ago we had a demonstration of Joinerysoft’s Commercial & Fire Door module and knew this was just what we were looking for.” He adds, “Part of Joinerysoft’s JMS 3D Pro software the 3D visual imagery jumped out. It makes it easy to price large numbers of fire doors and gives customers a clear idea of what they are getting.” Luke confirms, “Some orders can take just minutes to price, even if there are multiple doors and variations.” The software uses pre-set materials to shorten quoting time and Luke adds, “Even if I need to create a new material set it may take longer but I’m aware that I’m constantly updating my library so it will get even quicker to quote. “

44

www.p-j-production.com

Customers are benefiting from true scale diagrams and once the job has been secured Joinerysoft’s software uses excel output to create a door schedule. Where jobs are provided in a pdf spreadsheet, Joinerysoft can also use excel input to quickly upload the job into the software. Joinerysoft’s Commercial & Fire Door Module has been designed with commercial door and fire door manufacturers in mind allowing custom configuration for manufacturers to design and build all doors including fire doors, their way. After three months Wignall’s have been able to produce customised questions for estimators to select the correct materials, fittings packs and finishes. They can now quickly and easily select multiple door types for projects that range into the hundreds. Job revisions are easily tracked with visibility of the original order and all revisions simultaneously. The benefits don’t stop at estimating, with production printouts all fully customisable so Wignall’s can print just the information relevant to each stage of the production process, provide delivery notes for each batch and even create invoices. All this can be done within the software on headed paper with links out to email or excel output to accounting packages as required.

CASE STUDY

Covid hasn’t stopped Wignall’s development in their business, with all configuration and training led by Joinerysoft conducted remotely. Luke says, “Online support has been ideal as after the hard graft initially with lots of communication explaining how our processes work, Joinerysoft was able to take all this onboard and quite quickly give us back a usable platform to start using. I was able to start using the system, with help as and when I needed.” He adds, “After the initial stage it’s been a quick progression to where we are now.” One of the reasons that Luke says Wignall’s chose Joinerysoft is that they quickly realised that Joinerysoft believe in continuous development, as do they. He says, “If I see something that I would like to improve I know that I can ask Joinerysoft for it and it is very likely to be taken onboard and implemented. I’ve received many improvements in the last year that other manufacturers have recommended. I’ve never been told, ‘No we can’t do that - it’s not going to happen’. That would be a huge disappointment. Joinerysoft has always said, ‘If we don’t have it we can work towards it and implement it further down the line’. That’s why we signed up and why we are continuing to move forward with Joinerysoft.” Luke concludes, “I would highly recommend Joinerysoft and JMS Pro (Commercial & Fire Doors) to everyone.” Recent Joinerysoft enhancements include large batch import, linking to 5 axis CNC machines and barcoding, introduced for an Australian customer but available for all. Managing Director, Alan Turner, says, “Joinerysoft is pleased to be part of Wignall’s development process and help them expand the fire door side of their business. We’ve invested greatly into the fire door industry and our commitment to continuous development means that we are constantly adding new improvements.
