INDUSTRY NEWS

Co-founders of Bloqs Al Parra (l) & Arnaud Nichols (r)

DEPUTY MAYOR OF LONDON OPENS BLOQS, THE UK’S FIRST OPEN-ACCESS FACTORY “It was an honour to have been invited to the opening of the UK’s first open-access factory. Al Parra and his cofounders have created a unique, collaborative space for the Enfield community and are providing space for educators to provide work based learning opportunities for young people. The project is inspiring and the team have worked tirelessly to make it happen. Support from their partners Weinig UK and Holz-Her UK who have provided access to the very latest innovations in solid wood and panel processing, is priceless.” Clare Hollister, PJP. The official opening of BLOQS, the UK’s first openaccess factory, has taken place at its newly built 32,000sqft workspace in Enfield, London. The not-forprofit organisation, which has partnered with leading woodworking machinery manufacturer, Weinig UK, to offer its members the use of five state-of-the-art machines, saw Deputy Mayor, Jules Pipe cut the ribbon and tour the impressive facility alongside Enfield Council’s, Cllr Caliskan. The new purpose-built workspace, which was designed in close collaboration 5th Studio, is the result of a three-way partnership and £4 million investment by The Mayor of London, Enfield Council and BLOQS - a social enterprise established in 2012 to empower and inspire makers who have suffered a steady decline in affordable industrial workspace in the capital. The result is an innovative workspace that gives those in woodwork, metalwork, engineering, fashion and textiles, access to £1.3 million-worth of industrial equipment. This includes five machines from Weinig UK and Holz-Her UK, each with varying levels of automation, bridging the gap between BLOQS existing, traditional woodworking machinery and the very latest innovations in solid wood and panel processing.

NEWS FIMMA – MADERALIA More than five hundred exhibitors will be at FIMMA – Maderalia which takes place from 29th March to 1st April, the fair has 512 companies and brands signed up to take part, including 396 direct exhibitors from 19 countries. A survey of the FIMMA database reveals that 87% of professionals surveyed will be visiting the biennial fair being held at feria Valencia in March and that their “intention is to look for new suppliers”. FIMMA – Maderalia has strengthened its marketing over the last few weeks, the aim being to offer the best possible showcase to a sector that received a boost during the two years of the pandemic from the boom in renovation and refurbishment. Feria Valencia carried out a survey over the last three weeks, through its own databases of industry professionals, to gain a first-hand insight into their concerns and create the best possible fair. The results have strengthened FIMMA – Maderalia’s positioning and highlighted the need for an event like Feria Valencia’s biennial exhibition. The fair’s director, Miguel Bixquert, says that “We carried out a survey of more than 500 professionals and 87% of them said they have confirmed they will be visiting the fair. we also took the opportunity to enquire about the current state of the industry and amongst the various motives for visiting FIMMA – Maderalia, almost all respondents highlighted

having had problems with their usual suppliers over the last two years so now need to see what other options the market can offer them”. This was with reference to furniture manufacturers, renovations contractors, carpentry firms, storage facilities, kitchen builders and flooring installers, who “in many cases worked non-stop throughout the pandemic and were not sufficiently acknowledged by their suppliers. Also, the restrictions on mobility over these last two years have revived the need to update content, catalogues and products. And the best forum for these operators to do so is FIMMA – Maderalia”. In Bixquert’s opinion, “times are great for the sector. It has a huge amount of work but, at the same time, there are uncertainties such as rising costs, scarcity of raw materials and supply issues. We are aware of all this, and that is why this March we will be showcasing the most extensive and varied offering on the market”.

NEWS BRITISH WOODWORKING FEDERATION TO CHAMPION APPRENTICESHIPS IN NEW CAMPAIGN The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) will be championing the role of apprenticeships in the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry in an upcoming campaign. Encouraging the next generation into the industry is a key priority for the BWF, and the new campaign - which will feature current and former apprentices - forms part of the organisation’s 2022 plans over skills, talent recruitment and retention. Driving awareness of the many career paths in the woodworking and joinery manufacturing profession, as well as the positive contribution that apprentices make to businesses, activity will be focused around sharing the stories and experiences of apprentices and successful professionals who began their careers through the achievement of an apprenticeship. Helping to address the broader construction industry skills shortage, which the CITB estimates will mean 216,800 new workers will be needed by 2025 to meet demand, the campaign will help to address skills challenges in the woodworking and joinery manufacturing profession. It will also draw upon the latest insight from the CITB’s New perspectives on recruitment to the construction industry report to align industry efforts to position the construction industry as an attractive career proposition.

Launching in March, video content will bring to life the journeys of individuals entering into, and professionals already working in the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry, and also raise awareness of the broad range of roles within and supporting the profession. Helen Hewitt, CEO of the British Woodworking Federation said, “This campaign will really shine a light on the essential role that apprenticeships play within the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry in bringing the next generation of talent into our profession. As we support National Apprenticeship Week at the beginning of February every year, we’re looking forward to extending its momentum and focus throughout the year to demonstrate the rewarding and diverse career paths that an apprenticeship in our industry offers. “There is a huge demand for woodworking and joinery skills right now, and it’s an exciting time to enter the profession and start on the career ladder. Companies in our sector are very well equipped to provide a formal training structure for apprentices, supported by the colleges that they partner with, and to be the starting point for a successful career in the woodworking and joinery manufacturing industry.”

CASE STUDY

LEADING FIRE DOOR MANUFACTURER EXTENDS HOMAG PARTNERSHIP Ahmarra Door Solutions, one of the UK’s leading fire door manufacturers, recently selected HOMAG as its preferred partner for woodworking equipment. The company invested in three new CNC machining centres and a new edge bander to replace and update some of its existing HOMAG equipment. Based in Hampshire, Ahmarra has been manufacturing doorsets for over 25 years. The company produces doors for a diverse range of buildings which include airports, railway stations, schools, hospitals, luxury homes, student accommodation, social housing, offices and commercial properties. The company’s core services include the design, manufacture, installation and project management of internal doorsets and glazed screens. It works closely with architects, interior designers, contractors and property developers. Ahmarra sold on HOMAG’s build quality and performance When selecting a supplier to replace the company’s existing wood-processing equipment managing director, Tim Doran reviewed the machines of three equipment manufacturers at the LIGNA woodworking show.

12

www.p-j-production.com

Tim opted to replace the equipment with HOMAG machines as he preferred some of the distinctive characteristics of the HOMAG models to those of the other brands. This included the ease of use of the machines’ software. The build quality of the HOMAG machines, the brand’s long-standing reputation for producing technically advanced products, and the Ahmarra workforce’s operational experience of HOMAG equipment also helped to sway his final choice. Following his initial model selection, Tim wanted to see and review the preferred equipment in operation. To this end, he visited HOMAG’s showroom in Derby, two of its manufacturing facilities in Germany and the production facility of a large woodworking manufacturer. Commenting on the advice and support provided by HOMAG throughout the selection process Tim said: “The specialist HOMAG sales representative was exceptionally knowledgeable; he was great at proposing the good solutions to meet our particular requirements without ever trying to oversell. Contrary to popular opinion, I also found HOMAG’s pricing to be very competitive given the high specification and performance of the machines. They definitely offered great value for money.”

CASE STUDY Four new HOMAG models increase efficiency Tim invested in the HOMAG equipment for Ahmarra’s new purpose-built manufacturing facility with the objective of producing engineered fire doorsets more efficiently. He purchased two HOMAG CENTATEQ P-500 5-axis CNC machines, a CENTATEQ P-310 5-axis CNC processing centre and an EDGETEQ S-500 edge bander. Reliability and ease of use along with good resale values were also important benefits Tim required from the machinery. Commenting on the operational advantages the latest models have brought to the business, Tim said: “The new equipment is faster and more accurate than our previous machines, and they are much easier to programme and operate. With our new edge bander, we can lip-up 80mm thick doors, whereas the previous machine had a limitation of only 60mm.

“We now also benefit from being able to employ and train people with no experience to operate these new, easier to use models. We can train operators in-house within a week, something that would have been almost impossible to do with the older machines.” If you would like a demonstration or more information on HOMAG’s machinery or software, please contact Adele Hunt at HOMAG UK on 01332 856424. T: +44 (0)1332 856500 E: info-uk@homag.com www.homag.com

“Our new CNC machining centres are 5-axis, while our former models were only 4-axis. Having 5-axis CNC machines means we can carry out more operations without the need to change tools.

INDUSTRY EDGEBANDING: HOW TO MAKE IT PERFECT Technology in edgebanding machines is becoming increasingly complex. But no matter which edging, which machine, which adhesive system and which technology a company works with, some rules must always and fundamentally be observed. The Ostermann edging experts give 7 useful tips everyone should follow. The be-all and end-all of edging processing is regular and professional maintenance of the machine. A perfect edging result depends on a perfect coordination of all parameters. It is important, above all, that the scraper is always sharp. The correct adjustment of the pressure rolls should also be checked during maintenance. In addition, a few tips can be used to optimise the results on the edgebanding machine. Tip No. 1: Clean Transport Tracks If you are often processing high-gloss or super matt surfaces, you should clean the machine parts and in particular the transport tracks with a suitable product. That prevents dust and dirt from settling in the still fresh glue joint. In practice, cleaning with REDOCOL greenline Teclinex One For All has proven to be effective. The cleaner is based on sustainable, plant-based raw materials and can be used for both surface and machine cleaning. Tip No. 2: Clean Gluepot Always remove adhesive incrustations at the edge of the gluepot immediately. After applying PUR hotmelt adhesives, use a flushing agent, such as the REDOCOL PUR cleaner. The product is suited for EVA hotmelt adhesives as well, e.g. to make a quick colour or material change. If you exclusively apply EVA hotmelt adhesives, it is advisable to use a special cleaning agent such as the Acmosol 130-102 for hotmelt gluepots. Tip No. 3: Use a Test Edging You can best test the adhesive application with a transparent test edging, such as the Ostermann PVC edging Transparent without Primer. Can you see the glue roll’s application pattern in the glue film on the board? It might be a sign that the pressure rolls are not adjusted correctly, that the glue has become too cold, or that the distance between workpiece and glue applicator roll is too small.

Tip No. 4: Check Temperature Temperature is one of the most important factors when processing edging on a machine. If the adhesive is at the wrong temperature or cools down too quickly - in summer due to draughts or in winter in a workshop that is too cold - the edgings cannot adhere properly. The temperature should therefore be checked regularly and at various points during the processing procedure. Ostermann’s thermometer is of good service to check the temperature in the gluepot. For the glue application roller and the board temperature, the Ostermann experts recommend the infrared thermometer. Tip No. 5: Measure Wood Moisture If the board material is too moist, faulty bonding will occur. The water in the board sweats out towards the warm side of the board. A film of moisture is created which prevents an optimal bond from forming between the furniture board (chipboard or MDF) and the adhesive film. Here, too, it is important to measure regularly! The ideal wood moisture content for chipboard is approx. 6%. Tip No. 6: Manually Tighten the Radius If adhesive residues or small chatter marks are still visible on the edging after machine processing, you can subsequently remove them with the REDOCOL scraper for radius. The scraper for radius has 3 different cut-guiding recesses for edgings of 0.4, 1 and 2 mm thickness. Tip No. 7: Remove Stress Whitening If the edgings still need to be smoothed after machine processing, the REDOCOL sisal brush is the product of choice. Due to its special sisal-cloth combination, the brush is the perfect tool to remove processing traces, material residues and stress whitening. Stress whitening that has occurred in extreme inner or outer radii can be easily removed afterwards with a hot air dryer.

INDUSTRY Trust is a good thing, but control is a better. Often the temperature display for the hotmelt gluepot does not show the actual temperature

The gluepot should be cleaned routinely & adhesive incrustations on the edge of the gluepot removed immediately

Be careful in winter: boards that are stored outside or come directly from trucks are too cold for processing

There may be no such thing as a dust-free workshop. But that is precisely why the machine should be regularly maintained & cleaned

CASE STUDY EXTRACTLY SYSTEM IS QUIET, DUST-FREE, AND HALF THE PRICE TO RUN Extractly Ltd has commissioned additional energysaving extraction plant at Tom Howley’s kitchen manufacturing facility near Glossop, Derbyshire, where the custom-designed system serves the machining operations side of the company’s 5,000 square metre factory. Established in 2004, by design director Tom Howley, the luxury kitchen brand has a nationwide presence through its 18 showrooms located across the UK, with another due to open later this year. Employing the highest quality materials to produce bespoke fitted kitchens in oak, walnut and handpainted finishes, Tom Howley kitchens range in style from classic to contemporary. Through acquisition by Neville Johnson Group in 2011, the company is now part of the renamed Bespoke Home Interior Design Group (BHID) which also comprises Neville Johnson Furniture, Neville Johnson Staircases, and the London Door Company. Over the years, and in common with many furniture manufacturers, the company has replaced older machinery with newer, faster equipment, as well as adding new machines to increase capacity. The well-equipped production facility now houses two CNC machining centres, with another due to be installed in the spring, along with numerous saws, spindle moulders and routers, plus two Boere wide belt sanders which alone account for over 35% of the factory’s total extraction requirement. In summer 2021, in order to optimise workflow, a reorganisation of machinery was being undertaken at Tom Howley, and Extractly Ltd were contracted to reconfigure the ductwork arrangement and integrated Ecogate® equipment which was controlling extraction to an existing, externallysited, filter unit which continues to serve the finishing side of the factory.

Bespoke absorptive silencers significantly reduce noise levels from the 90kW main fan. Over on the machining side, however, planned installations of new, high-speed, dust-producing equipment would require a significant increase in extraction capacity. As factory manager, Alan Ashmore, explained: “The previouslyinstalled, internally-sited, filter unit was going to need at least an upgrade, but probably replacement, so we approached Extractly for a quotation to bring the system up to specification.” After a full review of current and expected future extraction requirements, Extractly’s proposal included decommissioning the old filter and replacing it with a new, externally-sited unit. Extractly director, Jake Oldfield, commented: “There were three key areas that needed consideration at Tom Howley: the requirement for increased extraction capacity; the need to expand the energy-saving Ecogate® system; and, since the only sensible option was to install a new fan and filter unit outside the building, to protect neighbouring residential properties from excessive noise pollution.” With projected airflow demand approaching 55,000m³ per hour, and suction provided by a 90kW main fan, Alan Ashmore had highlighted from the outset that it was crucial for the extraction system to be silenced to an acceptable level for residents living less than 50 metres from the location earmarked for the new dust plant.

The 6-module Nederman NFKZ3000 unit supplied and installed by Extractly Ltd.

16

www.p-j-production.com

To ensure there would be no environmental impact at residential properties closest to the site, Extractly commissioned a BS4142 noise impact survey from specialists Beechfield Design Consultancy (BDC). Armed with environmental noise measurements and using acoustic calculations, BDC established requirements for noise attenuation at the site, and designed and manufactured bespoke absorptive silencers. Fabricated from galvanised

CASE STUDY steel sheet, these particular silencers are designed to reduce the sound generated by turbulent air inside the fan, as well as the noise which travels down the ducting. Internally, the enclosures contain sound insulating materials, sandwiched within sheets of perforated steel, and spaced to allow efficient, unimpeded flow of dust-laden air through to the filter unit. Extractly’s engineers installed the noise attenuation equipment at the same time as the new fan and filter unit, and the design will ensure sound levels at the nearest properties are equivalent to normal background levels. The filter unit Extractly installed at Tom Howley is a Nederman NFKZ3000 5+1; a 6-module unit fitted with Nederman’s patented, high-performance, polyester SUPERBAG filter bags. Filtered dust waste drops into the hopper below where a drag-chain conveyor transfers the collected waste to a rotary valve discharge unit. A series of five 1.1kW regeneration fans enable filter bag cleaning to be carried out automatically during operation, and waste dust is transferred, pressure-free, directly to a covered box cart. Designed for continuous operation and to handle high dust volumes, these units are manufactured to strict safety and emissions standards and are fully ATEX compliant. In addition, the modular construction will allow Tom Howley to add further modules if future equipment acquisitions further increase demand for dust extraction. The installation has also benefited from the inclusion of a second Ecogate® greenBOX12 controller; doubling the capacity of the existing on-demand energy-saving system. Ecogate® technology works in conjunction with a variable

The two Boere sanders naturally require high-powered extraction when running but, with Ecogate® installed, energy consumption is significantly reduced when the machines are idle. speed drive unit, which automatically adjusts and optimises the running speed of the main extraction fan as individual woodworking machines come on line or shut down. When compared to standard installations, where the fan operates continuously, at full power, an Ecogate® system can typically reduce energy consumption by over 50% — with the resulting cost savings becoming more dramatic as energy prices continue to rise. Extractly’s technical director, William Kenyon, who has been involved with Ecogate® since the technology was introduced to the UK woodworking industry back in 2010, explains how these savings are made: “With Ecogate®, sensors on each machine constantly monitor usage, and extraction is independently controlled, in real-time, to match the requirements of each individual piece of woodworking machinery. Since the extraction system only operates when machines are running, the total extraction volume requirement is significantly reduced, creating potential for huge energy and cost savings, as well as lower noise levels both at the fan, and inside the factory.” Extractly completed the installation over the Christmas downtime and commissioned the system in time for full production to get underway as the company returned to work again in the new year. Adam Slack, Howley’s production supervisor, said: “Everyone is delighted with the job Extractly have done here; we now have a fullyautomated, future-proofed system which just gets on quietly and efficiently with the task of dust extraction — levels of both dust and noise on the factory floor have been reduced significantly. We were also very impressed with the standard of work, and the way Extractly handled every aspect of what was a very time-contingent contract.”

Staying productive and profitable are key considerations for any business and your choice of storage plays an important role in achieving these goals. While the requirements of each facility are different the correct manufacture, design and installation of your racking can maximise utilisation of your warehouse footprint, provide easy access to stored products and minimise stock damage. After all, any delays in production and delivery will prove costly!

Who are Stakapal? Today, Stakapal offer probably the most widely used storage products in the UK Panel Products industry, established through our work with leading organisations within the market. We use our expertise to design bespoke racking systems that meet your picking requirements while also increasing storage capacity. Our in-house design and project teams provide a concept to completion service from initial site survey through to design, manufacture and finally installation. Supporting British industries is something we take seriously, and we are currently the only manufacturer to produce Cantilever Racking and Pallet Racking as well as a full range of Warehouse Racking Systems from within the UK. Our 72,000 sq.ft production facility in Staffordshire houses a wide range of modern manufacturing equipment including roll forming lines, press braking cells, robotic welders and a fully automated powder coating system.

PROFILE Getting the Right Storage Panel products can measure anywhere from 2400mm to 3660mm or more in length and from 900mm to 2070mm in depth making them difficult to pick when bulk stacked. Valuable warehouse space is wasted and costly damage to stock will often occur when products are constantly being moved around. Our Cantilever Racking range offers 100% selectivity, and is an inherently adaptable system, which is designed using vertical, self-supporting uprights manufactured from fabricated steel for strength and safety. Single-sided racks can fit flush against the wall while a double-sided configuration allows the racking to be used to create storage space on either side of the central column. The racking uses arms instead of bays for horizontal storing and loading of stock which can be adjusted to suit any size of product and increase available capacity.

Stakapal’s commitment to safety continues by ensuring that our in-house installers working on your site are registered and put through SEIRS (Storage Equipment Installers Registration Scheme), a unique initiative from SEMA which aims to raise safety standards at the point of installation. Racking systems qualify as work equipment and, under PUWER, it is your responsibility to ensure they are in good working order, maintained and inspected correctly. The HSE recommends using a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector (SARI) who is trained and continually assessed to industry standards. Stakapal’s support doesn’t stop once the installation is finished, we have our own in-house SARI qualified inspectors, who can undertake a comprehensive inspection and prepare a detailed report highlighting where repair work is considered necessary on an annual basis.

Panel products and sheet materials can be stored effectively on our Conventional, Free Path or Guided Aisle Cantilever Racking systems. For products which need to be stored in relatively small volumes, our Stakrak SR2000 Series Pallet Racking offers a lower budget alternative that has the flexibility to be adapted to your exact requirements. Construction typically comprises of double-sided and single-sided runs of racking, separated by aisles which are dimensioned to suit the customers counterbalance forklift trucks or the more space efficient reach trucks. We also manufacture a wide range of other solutions for the Timber & Joinery industry including A-Frame Racking (Vertical Storage) and Pigeon Hole Racking.

Safety as Standard The panel industry is incredibly safety-conscious, and we support this as a full member of SEMA (Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association). SEMA is a leading voice within the warehouse industry, promoting the safe design, manufacture, installation, and use of racking systems. As Full Members of SEMA and to meet their high standards our products are independently tested which guarantees they have been designed, manufactured, and installed to rigorously defined standards.

FEATURE HOMAG’S POWEREDGE PRO DUO IS A PROVEN PRECISION ALL-ROUNDER HOMAG’s track record of designing and manufacturing innovative CNC machining centres has established the brand as the global market leader. To enhance its popular CNC range, HOMAG developed the state-of-art technology used in its latest edge banding unit - the powerEdge Pro Duo. The accumulation of over 30 years of industry-leading research in contour edge banding systems culminated in the evolution of this unit, which is available on HOMAG’s CENTATEQ E-310, E-500 and E-700 CNC processing centres. One unit for all with first-time accuracy Designed with versatility and simplicity of use in mind, every component of the unit is equipped with the latest sensors and control algorithms, making it easier and quicker than ever to get the perfect edge. The latest model can produce the desired result from the very first workpiece. This means that fine adjustment or multiple test pieces are generally not required, even on challenging shapes. Using exact edge tracing and a feed roller with direct distance measurement, the powerEdge system guarantees that edging tape is applied precisely from start to finish. This creates options for designing shapes and achieving perfect results in 360-degree glueing even for the smallest components. The speed, temperature and contact pressure are defined at every point along the contour, with no restrictions on butt joint locations. The pressure roller applies the edge to the workpiece with a precise amount of force for a consistently even finish. With defined temperature technology, the powerEdge Pro Duo system produces perfectly finished workpieces without complicated programming.

Pro Duo Unit

24

www.p-j-production.com

Combined glueing functions The powerEdge Pro Duo allows the user to freely switch between conventional hot-melt glue and pre-coated edges or zero-joint edging on one workpiece. The combined operation is possible without the need for a changeover, as the hot air nozzle tool used for reheating hot-melt glue also activates the functional layer of a zero-joint edge. Using airTec, the powerEdge Pro Duo head achieves the same quality as a laser head for a fraction of the price of laser. This makes invisible joint quality accessible to even more sectors of the industry.

A proven hit with customers Since its launch in 2020, the powerEdge Pro Duo has been very well received by users. After several months of working with the unit, a spokesperson from a large and wellestablished interiors construction company concluded “We have been able to use the unit fully from the very beginning and it has proven its worth. It’s very stable and the programming is also significantly easier. Programs can be run with higher feeds than ever allowing the operator to complete the required task more quickly. For us, the unit is a real step forward.”

FRONT COVER FEATURE NEW SOFTWARE FOR SCM CNC MACHINING CENTRES There are many new features related to SCM software and digital services, with particular reference to CNC machining centres, and they are part of a truly integrated ecosystem: the “Digital Integrated Woodworking Process”.

that will be carried out during the production in advance on their PC.

This is a collection of digital and integrated technologies - i.e. software and digital services - that interact to define what products are to be manufactured, as well as how and when they are to be manufactured.

Once all production data have been defined, it’s time to optimize, schedule and plan the jobs and the production. Production scheduling and planning can be handled with dedicated software, the so-called MES (Manufacturing Execution System). On the other hand, optimization has to do with incrementing processes such as cutting, drilling or routing.

Within this framework, SCM software and digital services can support customers at every stage of their process in creating furniture and the 2022 innovations concern all these stages.

Preparation: Maestro CNC First thing is preparing the information, data and programs for the production. Design, CAD-CAM software and simulators can dramatically shorten time and reduce errors from the office to the machines. According to Maestro’s software mission, SCM provides specific software to support customers in the design, optimization and data generation for the machines in the shopfloor. In the office, before the production, the design and programming system Maestro cnc presents new updates and features. Maestro CNC is the CAD-CAM software for the design of the workpiece and it ensures that all the machining operations are quickly and easily programmed thanks to smart functions (app and macros libraries) built to program with just a mouse click. Another click away and CNC programs are automatically generated. Maestro CNC offers large graphic previews of the workpiece with the machine operations, the machine and of the tools together with immediate functions which are able to the most comfortable use and best result. Also in evidence Maestro proview, the 3D Simulator software that allows users the access to a three dimensional model of their machine in their office and to overview the operations

Planning And Optimization

Maestro easyFLOW is the newborn plug&play MES software powered by SCM that ensures well-executed production plans, complete visibility and optimization of production and processes across the enterprise. Maestro easyFLOW is extremely simple to use and able to support even small businesses with programming and production flow management as well as 4.0 interconnection. Maestro power TMS is the new software of the new Accord 500/600 CNC machining centres for solid wood machining. It further optimises and simplifies tool management. Thanks to this program that maximises the ability of the storage and optimises programming, there is no need for the operator to waste time and energy in looking for the most suitable tool: the software will identify and indicate the tool’s exact position in the storage thus minimising machining times.

Production: Maestro Active CNC Smart manufacturing employs different technologies to make machines more and more intelligent, smart and interactive. In this concept, a smart factory has machines provided with HMI software facilitating the user experience and interaction with the machine. Maestro active is the unified operator interface software for all SCM technologies, including CNC machining centres. A single operator can easily and safely manage multiple machines at a time, thanks to the consistency maintained

FRONT COVER FEATURE between all interfaces: regardless of the machine, Maestro active maintains the same look and feel, thus ensuring the same approach to interaction. The new interface has been specifically designed and optimized for immediate use via touch screen. Graphics have been redesigned for simple and comfortable navigation, with tablet-like icons on touch screen controller. Productivity has been improved thanks to integrated help and recovery procedures that reduce the possibility of error from the operator’s side. Monitoring And Servicing: Maestro Connect Once the production has been started and for the whole life cycle of the machine, Maestro connect Digital Service platform ensures machine status monitoring, maintenance optimization, issue management, spare parts suggestions, smart learning as well as augmented reality service support with Smartech.

The Maestro connect IoT platform is linked to the new “My Scm” portal. This is a new service where customers and partners can open tickets for technical assistance and track the status of their requests. By tracking all support requests, SCM Service can manage the cases in an easier and more effective way, cutting off waiting times and providing faster solutions. The ticketing service is just one of the many services available on the portal and all customers and partners who have connected machines, can enter the platform IoT Maestro Connect through it.

INDUSTRY JOINERY COMPANY SAVES MONEY BY TURNING WASTE INTO FREE HEATING A Lancashire joinery company has purchased a wood waste heater from Wood Waste Technology to save money on its operating costs. Station Yard Joinery Limited manufactures high end bespoke furniture from its woodworking machine shop in Earby, Lancashire. When the business moved into its current unit about a year ago, the 4500 sq. ft building, with its high roof proved to be a cold place to work in the winter months. Having experienced the benefits of wood waste heaters at a previous company, MD of Station Yard Joinery, Martin Conboy decided the business should invest in one, so contacted Wood Waste Technology. Following a survey and a quote, the business purchased a WT5 that was installed by Wood Waste Technology’s experienced engineers, to provide much needed heating for the workshop in winter, but also to provide free disposal of the large amount of waste wood generated from the manufacturing process.

In addition, Wood Waste Technology is the UK’s official distributor for Gross Apparatebau GmbH, a German manufacturer of dependable, precision engineered shredders and briquetters. The company is also a distributor for Putzmaus boiler tube cleaning systems - a powerful but gentle routine maintenance solution that is quick and easy to use, and helps to increase boiler efficiency and lower operating costs. For more information on how you can save or make money by using your wood waste: T: 01785 250400 www.woodwastetechnology.com www.grossuk.co.uk www.putzmaus.co.uk

Having previously invested in a dust collection system and a briquetting machine, Station Yard Joinery also has the ability to recycle some of its waste into briquettes, to be used in the wood waste heater alongside its general wood waste. Martin says: “It makes no sense to spend hundreds of pounds on skips to get rid of our wood waste when we can burn it to convert it into heat for the factory. We’ve definitely made the right decision for our business by investing in the wood waste heater. It’s a great piece of kit which will keep us warm and save us money. In addition, we’re looking forward to recycling our dust into briquettes, which will burn really well in the wood waste heater!” MD of Wood Waste Technology, Kurt Cockroft says: “It’s great that the team at Station Yard Joinery can burn their waste and briquettes in the heater to generate warmth in the workshop, instead of paying for skips to take it away.” Wood Waste Technology offers a full range of wood waste heaters, from small hand fired units to larger fully automatic systems, and offers site survey and design, as well as manufacture, installation and on-going maintenance. The company also services all types of wood waste heaters and supplies genuine spares up to 60% cheaper than other suppliers.

CASE STUDY

SOFTWARE PROVES ESSENTIAL FOR SMALL DORSET JOINERY BUSINESS If you’ve ever struggled to justify the cost of software for your joinery business, then read about James Selby who runs a small joinery business in Blandford Forum, Dorset. After two years using Joinerysoft’s Joinery Management Software (JMS), James says, “to be honest, I don’t think I’d want to run a joinery business without JMS now!” James Selby Joinery has been trading since 2007 when James started in his garden shed before taking over an established joinery business and grown steadily ever since. He manufacturers timber windows and doors and has built up a reputation for excellence in customised and high end joinery which provides him with regular business and new customers mostly through word of mouth. James classes himself as a small business with only a part timer and apprentice helping him one day per week plus a partner who manages the finishing and painting. As the main joiner James has to juggle production with office work and it was this conflict that caused him to investigate possible software solutions a couple of years ago. After a couple of months of investigating software James was convinced. He says, “As soon as I saw a demonstration I could see how fantastic JMS was going to be.” Adding, “The setting out, diagrams, ease of use, the hours that you save by pulling up the saved details; JMS solves all those problems. It’s good value for what it does.”

32

www.p-j-production.com

With James already busy in the office, training was really important. He says, “The trainer was brilliant. His knowledge and helpfulness has enabled me to create a solid base in the office and led to huge benefits to my business.” One of the many benefits to JMS is the professional quotes that are produced. James says, “I’m competing against companies that are still quoting in a ‘Word’ document. While competitors’ quotes are set out nicely they don’t compare to JMS which looks much more professional and gives a good image of my business..” James confirms that he’s won quite a few jobs on the initial appearance of his JMS quotes. The fact that it includes all the information; if weather sealed, double glazed, fully furnished - there is nothing for customers to question. It’s all nice and clear and saves any confusion further down the line. Previously James would dread quoting anything more than two/three windows, especially if it was anything out of the ordinary. He would have to spend hours calculating cutting lists, timber, and glass, knowing that he couldn’t bill for this time either. Now he says, “It’s very quick to generate quotes, with the benefit of being able to get back to customers within a day. That makes a huge difference.” With repeat business he is able to instantly pull up their saved details and simply amend the sizes to produce a quote minutes later. It has proved particularly advantageous to his larger customers, who often manage large estates. They can ask

CASE STUDY

for speculative quotes without any guarantee that the work will materialise, so it’s important that it doesn’t take up too much of James’s time. Providing this enhanced service puts James in a good position to win future work, without it costing him in time or money. Times savings brought about by JMS means that James no longer has to work until eleven pm at night. He now works just five days a week, a huge difference from the seven day weeks he used to put in. He adds, “I’m still in the office because I run a business, but I’ve gained an extra three days per week in the workshop!” James is delighted with the ease of use of JMS and its ability to store customer data for him. He says “After a recent period of absence, I was able to come straight back into the office and start production at full speed, as I’ve not had to hunt for lots of paper that I put down weeks previously. Everything in JMS is always ready to go and nothing gets lost.” When asked about customer support, James describes the team at Joinerysoft as ‘fantastic’. He adds, “nothing is too much trouble for them. They call me back quickly and spend time explaining everything thoroughly.” Another positive about Joinerysoft he says is that the software continues to improve with updates. One recent improvement that James uses all the time now, is the ability to separate out finishing

costs from the quote. James says, “It’s fantastic because sometimes you can look expensive if you’re compared to a competitor whose only quoted for a primed finish and you’ve quoted fully finished. Now I can take the finishing cost off the main price and add it to the bottom of the quote, so the customer can compare like with like and it’s a real winner for me.” James says, “I’ve heard joiners running one man bands saying that they can’t justify the cost of software. I believe that if you’re a one man band you almost need it more than some of the bigger companies because you haven’t got the time to sit around drawing up quotes by hand and sending off ‘Word’ files.” He adds, “ JMS has made a huge difference to my business and easily pays for itself twice over in the year, if like me you produce windows and doors.” James concludes, “The best thing for me is the time JMS saves me and the professionalism of the paperwork that goes out to customers; it’s really the image of my business.” He adds, “After the initial input of work it’s really low investment in time. It’s a huge time saving and the quality you get out of JMS is excellent.” T: 01608 643302 www.joinerysoft.com

INDUSTRY VERTICAL PANEL SAWS VS SLIDING TABLE SAWS It’s a question that is commonly asked: should I buy a vertical panel saw or sliding table saw? Here, we explore why a Striebig vertical panel saw might be a worthy option for you… When discussing the difference between a vertical panel saw and sliding table saw, the machine’s space requirements are an obvious starting point. The space-saving credentials of a vertical panel saw have been well documented over the years and have often been a deciding factor for many businesses looking to invest in a new machine. After all, even when working with jumbo sheets (2800 x 2070mm), a vertical panel saw requires just 7sqmt of working space – a third of the space required by an equivalent sliding panel saw. However, the advantages don’t stop there. its moving saw head. This offers the operator a wealth of benefits, including a reduction in material handling. Even when you’re performing multiple cuts, you only need to handle a full sheet when it is initially loaded onto the machine and, due to its vertical design, the board’s edge simply needs to be put directly onto the datum before the cutting process can begin. This removes the risk of the board being positioned incorrectly and ultimately, speeds up the cutting cycle. On a sliding table saw, the blade remains stationary and relies on the board being manually positioned and fed through the blade. When cutting a jumbo sheet, it requires two people to operate the machine due to the size and weight of the sheet and a large workspace either side of the blade to handle the material safely. The level of accuracy on

The Edition 60’s integrated panel-lowering device (PAV) positions each panel automatically, eliminating the need to turn the sheet by hand during the cutting process.

INDUSTRY

Striebig vertical panel saws can include a wealth of intelligent features designed to guarantee accuracy, speed and safe, hand-guided workflow, including a laser indicator for horizontal cuts, horizontal trim cut, digital measuring systems on both the X and Y axis and pneumatic clamping motor carriage.

each cut is dependent on the operator positing the board correctly against the fence and keeping it in position during the cutting process. This lends itself to inconsistent cuts and material wastage. Then there’s a question of cut quality. Both saw types require a good quality, vibration-free saw blade and the right blade and feed speeds. Regardless of a sliding table saw’s build quality or price-point, the feed speed can only be controlled via the operator. This requires a certain level of skill, material knowledge and concentration. Vertical panel saw models in the Striebig range can offer an automated cut cycle with accurately controlled feed speeds, which reduces operator-error and guarantees a high-quality cut every time, even when cutting challenging materials like thick plastic or With many sliding table saws, automation is limited to the positioning of stops. With a vertical panel saw, the level of automation available is far superior, removing potential operator error and accuracy issues. It also lessens the skills required to use the saw effectively. Striebig’s models feature a wealth of automated features, including automatic positioning digital measuring stops, fully automated cut cycles, laser guided indicators, pneumaticallybraked support rollers and automatic trimming. The new Edition 60 also comes with an integrated panel-lowering device that positions each panel automatically, eliminating the need to turn the sheet by hand during the cutting process entirely. Intelligent features such as this can also be teamed with optimisation software that can be built into the machine or retro-fitted at a later day. It can also be partnered with stock and waste management software and CAD/CAM software programmes to streamline production and benefit from industry 4.0 manufacturing processes.

Operator safety is always of paramount importance to any saw manufacturer but, as the statistics show, you are less likely to suffer injury on a vertical panel saw. On a sliding table saw, the blade is always exposed, whereas a on a vertical panel saw, it is completely contained within its housing during operation and run-down. On a Striebig saw, you also can’t turn the saw on if the housing is open or unlocked. In addition to this, a vertical panel saw is also less labour intensive – it’s easier to move the saw head on a Striebig than it is to manually feed large sheets through a table saw – making it an exceptionally safe and effective workhorse. Matt Pearce, Managing Director of TM Machinery says: “The space saving of a vertical panel saw should never be overlooked but there are so many more benefits a Striebig can offer. Comparable in price to a sliding table saw but offering a different approach to cutting sheets to size, a Striebig saw removes many of the issues associated with cutting large panels, guaranteeing accuracy within 0.1mm on every cut. On top of this, the finish of the cut means the board can be put straight through an edgebander without further machining or hand-finishing, offering the user a wealth of possibilities when using panels, composites, plastics and metals. To see the results for yourself, book a demonstration at our Leicester showroom and explore the full capabilities of a Striebig vertical panel saw.”

This new multi-purpose, film-backed abrasive has been designed to stay sharp from the first cut to the last, whilst also providing the user with dust-free sanding, efficient performance, and a high-quality consistent finish. Galaxy is the first abrasive to use Mirka’s innovative Multifit™ hole configuration. The result of extensive research from the development team in Finland, this technology utilises optimal hole placement to allow the largest amount of dust extraction without sacrificing sanding performance. The alternating hole sections and grip areas are designed to channel the dust away from the sanding process which, combined with Galaxy’s special coating, helps eradicate clogging. Multifit™ also supports full extraction on any type of machine or block with no need to waste time aligning the holes. Galaxy is the ideal abrasive for sanding both soft and hard materials as well as various substrates that are prevalent across the automotive, marine production and wood sectors Pete Sartain, National Sales Manager Industrial, Mirka UK, says, “We are constantly evolving our abrasive line-up and are very excited to be adding Galaxy to it. We believe this abrasive’s new technology will help our customers increase their productivity, while also opening up new revenue streams within their business.”

DUNCAN REEDS SELECT HOMAG MACHINERY FOR EXTENDED PRODUCTION FACILITIES Leading fabricator of laminated products, Duncan Reeds Limited, recently acquired a new factory and selected HOMAG as its preferred supplier of the plant’s machinery. The new facility is an extension to the company’s existing production facilities and is centrally located in Kidderminster, Worcestershire. It has been equipped with five HOMAG machines which total nearly half a million pounds of investment. The family business was established in 1989 and has since grown into a dynamic operation. It produces a vast array of custom-made products for a diverse variety of businesses in the UK and overseas. Along with the new 12,000 sq ft production facility, It has two other facilities located in West Sussex and Manchester with joint production and storage space of just over 70,000 sq ft. Commenting on the new West Midlands production facility, director Dean Harkess-Cowlyn said “Once you have reached the summit of your industry you need to continually develop and improve on the quality and service that got you there. To maintain our leading industrial position we have taken the bold step of opening a third manufacturing facility. The addition of

this operation will enable us to expand our client base, serve our customers more efficiently, and offer the most competitive prices and shortest lead times in our industry.” The company is especially delighted to have taken on Rob Shilvock as the new business and operations manager for the new factory. With a wealth of over 28 years’ experience in the decorative panel industry, Rob has been tasked with further cementing the company’s status as the UK’s number one laminate fabricator. His specialist industry expertise will be key in helping the company evolve further.

Ongoing investment in HOMAG Machinery Duncan Reed first invested in HOMAG machinery in 2002, when the company bought a top-end Brandt edge bander. Since then it has added over 20 more HOMAG machines including saws, CNC processing centres, throughfeed post formers and PU edge banders. The five machines that were installed at the new Kidderminster site consist of HOMAG’s CENTATEQ P-110, EDGETEQ S-500, SAWTEQ B-300 and the JOOS press and glue spreader.

HOMAG - a long-standing trusted partner

“We consider HOMAG a trusted partner having invested in over 20 of its machines over the past 30 years. So the decision to use them again was an obvious choice.

Duncan Reeds’ company directors visited HOMAG’s headquarters in Germany to see the new machines in operation before purchasing them. During their visit, the HOMAG sales team helped the directors to select the most appropriate machinery for their specific requirements and budget.

“We selected HOMAG as our preferred machinery supplier for the new factory as quality and service are essential to our success. These are the two most important attributes we look for in our machinery suppliers, and our longstanding experience with HOMAG has clearly demonstrated its ability to deliver these qualities. During our visit to HOMAG’s head office, we decided to invest in some of their most advanced technology to facilitate our ambitious expansion plans.”

Remarking on the HOMAG machinery investment Dean concluded:

FEATURE DOMESTIC WOOD-BURNER POLLUTION IS WORSE THAN TRAFFIC Wood burning stoves produce more fine particle pollution than all the road traffic in Britain according to new government data. Over the last ten years, emissions caused by domestic wood-burners have increased by a third, research by DEFRA has found. It is claimed that 17% of fine particle pollution in the UK was produced by domestic stoves in homes compared with 13% from road transport. Industrial wood fired boiler and heaters, that are automatically fed, have produced the opposite effect. Current UK legislation on industrial woodfired boilers and heaters have a limit of 60mg/m3 on all plants capable of burning 90kgs/hr or more. The Ranheat ceramic flue gas filtration system takes particulate down to less than 2mg/m3 removing almost all pm 2.5s (particulate matter 2.5 microns) The ceramic filter elements contained within the filter housing ( 280 filters on a 1MW boiler) draw the hot flue gasses through the elements with the particles collecting on the outside of the tubes. The elements are automatically cleaned by a pulse of compressed air blown backwards through each of the tubes. Domestic wood-burners are receiving bad press at the moment, and people are rightly looking at the merits of any hand loaded wood fired heating appliance. Ranheat’s range of industrial wood-fired boilers and heaters are all automatically fed, have a minimum of multi-cyclone flue gas cleaning or full ceramic filtration systems fitted. In hi NOx areas of the country the NOx emissions from industrial wood-burners are lower than the ambient air levels that the boiler takes in for combustion air. Ranheat’s range of ceramic flue gas cleaning equipment can be retrofitted to all makes of industrial wood fired boilers. If you have a boiler or heater that does not meet the new regulations you have until 2030 to make the changes.

FEATURE

AN ICONIC FAMILY Introducing the Epicon³, the new 5-axis CNC series from Holz-Her. Following the successful launch of the Epicon 7235 last year, the Epicon range has expanded to include two further high performance, high precision 5-axis CNC machining centres and two new optional console tables. Whilst varying in size, the new Epicon 7135 and Epicon 7335 - which have machining depths of 1,500mm and 2,100mm respectively- have been designed to offer exceptional machining flexibility and fast and effective milling on panels, solid wood and composite materials. In addition to machining lengths of 3,680 to 7,280mm in the X direction, all three Epicon models offer a true 300mm of clearance above the top of the suction cup for extreme machining heights, as well as a generous 565mm Z stroke – an ideal solution for those working with complex workpieces, stairs, windows and doors. Sitting on a tolerance-free, plasma cut base, Holz-Her’s Epicon³ series has been built to withstand vigorous use. The family’s 5-axis performance package is equipped with a powerful, liquid-cooled 13 kW direct-drive five-axis head as standard that can also be combined with Holz-Her’s new Bluetooth Chip Control for data capture and spindle monitoring. An optional 18kw Pro-Torque electro-spindle for high machining performance is also available, along with a variety of automatic tool changing options and space for up to 97 tools, making it suitable for every configuration and application. An optional chip conveyor, which is available on the 7235 and 7335, and designed to be integrated into the machine base to save space, can also be specified to ensure even large quantities of chips are reliably transported to the extraction manifold. Offering adaptable machining capabilities, three drilling units are available. As standard, the Epicon comes equipped with 10 vertical and four horizontal drills. Plus, a grooving saw with the option of two further horizontal drills in the X.

42

www.p-j-production.com

An optional XL drilling head, designed for more drillintensive projects, such as adjustable shelving, offers 15 vertical and six horizontal drills. A further four horizontal drills and an extra grooving head can also be integrated into the machine. A larger XXL unit offers even quicker drilling operation and comes equipped with 25 vertical drills, six horizontal drills and a grooving saw. Four additional horizontal drills and an extra grooving head can also be specified. For maximum flexibility, the EPICON³ series can be equipped with various machine tables. A manual positioning table with two laser pointers for the exact positioning of vacuum cups and display of workpiece contours comes as standard. Alternatively, Holz-Her’s new synchro-drive table – which comes equipped with loading aids - moves all consoles and suction cups to their optimum position automatically within a matter of seconds, whilst taking into account the tool contours, passage and pockets. Suction cups for solid wood and special materials are also available for machining operations that require an extreme holding force. All Epicon models can also be equipped with a VISE LED table that highlights the correct position of the console and suction cups using coloured LED strips. Designed for error-free positioning and millimeter accuracy, the VISE LED table even displays the angle of rotation needed and, for frequently recurring parts, the operator can save the suction cup position together with the workpiece, to ensure fast and simple set-up every time. The Epicon’s software offering has also been designed to reduce set-up time and costly downtime. The CAMPUS Plus software package – which includes new pre-programmed macros for effective five-axis machining – features BetterSim cutting simulation as standard. This allows the cutting steps to be checked even during work preparation, ensuring collision-free operation between the machine’s tools, noncutting area and workpiece. Additional simulations are also available of the suction cups and consoles for even more control over the machining process.

FEATURE When using CAD software, the operator also has the option to create a tool path before machining. The professional DXF import of components from CAD software allows workpieces to be positioned on the work center directly from the CAD software. The only prerequisite for this is a matching layer in the design software. This allows for even complex 5-axis machining operations to be realised simply. The Epicon³’s intelligent features don’t stop there. When it comes to safety, the Epicon offers new, state-of-the-art sensor technology with automatic distance control. The introduction of SafeDetect means that, whilst the operator can benefit from free access to the machine, the space above the machine table, as well as the area in front of the machine, is monitored for all-round protection. Laser lines projected on the floor in real time continuously shows the operator the safe zone surrounding the machine head. If this is encroached, the machine will stop safely and securely. What’s even more impressive, is that unlike a bumper system that needs to run at a very slow speed, SafeDetect runs at full speed until it gets within 1,400mm of the operator. It then automatically reduces the 131 mtrs/min vector speed to traverse at 30 mtrs/min. When within 700mm of the operator, it will stop and when ready, continue where it left off. A guard fence also prevents access to the machining centre’s operating area at the side and rear. Paul Nightingale, National Sales Manager for Holz-Her UK says, “I’m excited to take this machine to market. The Epicon³ range has been expertly designed and engineered to offer a wealth of different machining solutions without compromise. Not only does it represent German build quality at its best, the level of innovation within the machine is second to none. Featuring what I believe to be the best and most intuitive machine software on the market, you can’t fail to engage in these easy to use, powerful Epicon CNC’s. Our market share grew significantly in 2021 and with the introduction of the new Epicon family, Holz-Her’s continued growth is assured.”

PROFILE BIESSE CREATES DEDICATED TEAMS TO FOCUS ON DIFFERING CUSTOMER NEEDS Biesse Group UK, a leader in machining technology for wood, glass, stone, metal, plastic and advanced materials, has announced a commercial restructure that will significantly enhance the customer experience and support the company’s ambitious growth plans. The remodelled commercial business will comprise two distinct teams that have been structured around customer requirements: one will focus on stand-alone machines and the other on key accounts and larger, more complex projects involving conveying, integrated lines, full factory layouts and automation. This binary structure makes provision for the contrasting sales, project management and servicing approaches that are required for these two customer groups. It will ensure all customers benefit from a streamlined service delivered by a responsive, accessible team that is solely focused on their needs and commands specialist knowledge of their sectors. Commenting on the move, Biesse Group UK CEO Steve Bulmer said: “A number of factors fed into the decision to restructure the business. More and more of our customers are looking to automate and they are looking for a very different relationship versus those customers who come to us for individual machine purchases. With the previous structure, the commercial team were having to switch between the two. This was not only resulting in a level of responsiveness we weren’t happy with, but was also restricting our ability to capitalise on growing demand for automation. Creating two dedicated teams will allow us to do a much better job for our customers and to realise the vision we have for our UK business.” Paul Willsher, formerly Brand Sales Manager CNC & Drilling, will head up the Machinery Sales team, as UK Commercial Director, Wood. Under his leadership, the team will be charged with growing sales of Biesse’s wood processing machines and delivering a world-class customer experience. Paul joined Biesse seven years ago as an Area Sales Manager and has vast experience in programming and operating CNC machinery in the joinery, shop fitting and office furniture sectors. His team of six Area Sales Managers,

44

www.p-j-production.com

PROFILE between them covering the entire UK, will be the first point of contact for customers. They will be supported by three Brand Sales Managers, who have the in-depth machine knowledge to provide technical assistance and prescribe the best, application-specific solution. “From many years in the wood manufacturing industry, I completely understand the challenges that our customers face. I am looking forward to drawing on this experience to drive a team that is committed to helping customers arrive at machining solutions that will address their pain points. By having a dedicated team that is singularly focused on this outcome, we have the best possible chance of supporting our customers and delivering growth for the business,” says Paul. André Myers, formerly a Regional Sales Manager, will be responsible for the new Key Accounts & Integrated Systems team, as Systems & Key Accounts Director. Prior to joining Biesse 12 years ago, André was part of the senior management team at a furniture manufacturing company and went on to run his own furniture business, giving him a commercial grounding that has since proved crucial when supporting customers on major investment decisions. Thanks to the new structure, customers under his charge will have a dedicated point of contact and a direct line to the Group’s technical team in Italy, facilitating the smooth handling of processes such as factory testing, commissioning and logistics for an enhanced customer experience. “System integration projects require a long-term partnership approach. Our customers need to be dealing with specialists who can advise on layouts, capacity, ROI and so on, and large projects spanning several months need to be carefully structured and managed to minimise downtime and risk. Our dedicated systems team is looking forward to providing the continuity and knowledge that these projects demand,” says André.

www.biessegroup.com

The formation of the new Key Accounts & Integrated Systems team reflects a wider automation and digitalisation trend that is gaining traction across the UK’s materials processing industries. With this new model, Biesse is perfectly placed to help customers improve operating efficiency and deskill complex processes through digital transformation and automation in their machining operations. STONEYWELL INVEST IN BLUM

“WHAT WE WANT, WHEN WE WANT IT, HOW WE WANT IT”. Stoneywell Kitchens, a kitchen retailer based in Staffordshire, were the first company in the UK to invest in Blum’s MINIPRESS top. With over 20 years of trading, Paul Durrant runs Stoneywell kitchens, but he also benefits from the help of his daughter Hollie and family dog Benson.

a MINIPRESS top. To be able to take customers into his showroom and demonstrate to them the manufacturing process was the level of quality he wanted for his customers. The lifetime guarantee Q card from Blum means Stoneywell’s customers can have full confidence in their new kitchen.

In recent years, Stoneywell have made the change to start manufacturing parts of the furniture themselves. They began with the recent acquisitions of an edge bander and a vertical power saw, However, there was still one element required to have the level of control they wanted for Stoneywell Kitchens – the horizontal and vertical drilling points for fittings. Blum’s MINIPRESS top seemed to fit the bill.

“I just want to give clients a really good product in every respect. From the edge banding to the fittings, and the technical support I get from Blum is second to none.” Paul commented.

The 3rd generation of the MINIPRESS series of machines, MINIPRESS top provides its user with a solution for drilling and insertion requirements. Coupled with EASYSTICK, the machine will dramatically increase the rate at which the board for a cabinet can be prepared or have Blum components installed. Furthermore, it is all contained in one machine, useful if space is a premium. MINIPRESS top completed the trio of machines that Stoneywell Kitchens needed for their next step as a business. However, buying a MINIPRESS top isn’t as simple as a UNIVERSAL drilling template or an ECODRILL - it is a complicated machine. Paul’s journey started with a complimentary tour around the Blum Experience Centre with his daughter so they could understand the Blum Ethos, which Paul felt matched with the approach he wanted for Stoneywell. The tour culminated with a demonstration of

48

www.p-j-production.com

The Blum Technical Team swung into action to support Stoneywell Kitchens through the next steps. They helped Paul through the requirements with the machine so he could have all the accessories necessary for his purposes, including the extended five-meter ruler and range of drilling heads. Once the machine was delivered, the last piece of the puzzle was for the Blum Technical Team to complete the machine commissioning service for Stoneywell. As the latest technical service from Blum, the purpose is to ensure that all new owners of a Blum machine have all the training they need to be able to confidently use their machine from day one. Blum machine specialists, Andy and Nathan, paid Paul a visit. As a tailored service, no two commissionings are the same, but the Blum experts were able to complete the installation, identify where Stoneywell needed help with the machine, and make any adjustments they felt would benefit the user. Finally, they needed to ensure all the software for both the MINIPRESS top and EASYSTICK was up to date. After a few

CASE STUDY test runs with members of the team, Blum’s experts confirmed that the MINIPRESS top was ready to go, down to knowing the boss depth of 13mm was set and that the horizontal drilling height was in the middle at 9mm. Hollie has worked with Blum’s Cabinet Configurator, so the team are confident they can build up their range of templates on Blum’s supporting software to help simplify their manufacturing capabilities down the road. The ease of transferring designs from Cabinet Configurator to creating them with the machine was a big draw for the family. “I think it’s great and exciting. It will make our lives a lot easier.” enthused Hollie. After running through any last questions Paul and the team had about the machine - how to best incorporate Cabinet Configurator transfer patterns into the machine and the flexibility of the top for things like dowel guides - Paul and the team were ready to begin the real learning with hands on experience. Safe in the knowledge that Andy and Nathan are only a call away if needed. There is a standard follow up service in a year, to see how Paul and the machine are getting on with one another, meaning Stoneywell Kitchens are confident that this is a long-term relationship, and their new manufacturing capability will remain on track.

If you’re interested in discovering what the MINIPRESS top can do for your business, or already own one and would like the support of the Blum Technical team, you can contact them on 0800 230 0898 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 12pm Saturday.

CASE STUDY COVERS TIMBER INVEST IN SALVADOR CROSSCUT TECHNOLOGY FROM DALTONS WADKIN The installation of a Salvador SuperPush 250 chain fed automatic crosscut saw has allowed Covers Timber and Building Merchants to keep pace with increasing production demands and provide flexibility in staffing within their feeder mills. Having supplied timber and building materials across the South East for over 175 years, Covers now boast some fifteen branches with an extensive range of over 25,000 product lines. Wanting to satisfy growing customer demand Product Manager, Peter Openshaw, saw an opportunity to help push themselves ahead of the competition. “We are fortunate that we have highly-skilled sales people, excellent production cability and a very positive attitude being open to new opportunities”, comments Peter. “Our ability to source most things and improvise and adapt ourselves to reflect our changing market helps us achieve strong performance results. Our competitors are very good indeed so this pushes us to try even harder.” Following a thorough investigation of available crosscut saws on the market, Peter contacted Daltons Wadkin, sole distributors for Salvador in the UK and Ireland. “Peters requirements were very familiar – we have helped dozens of timber merchants with similar projects and I knew immediately we had the right solution”, enthuses Daltons Wadkin Sales Director, Andy Walsh. “For high production crosscutting the Salvador SuperPush range is ideal; automatic push infeed, cutting list optimisation, heavy duty construction; easy to use”. The Salvador SuperPush 250 is a programmable crosscut saw capable of processing up to 130 cubic metres of timber per shift. Up to 7 infeed loading chains ensure the machine is continually fed with individual or stacked work pieces while the outfeed collection area is automatically cleared for uninterrupted production. Covers investment in a Salvador has given them flexibility in staffing which in turn has positively affected growth. Peter is keen to point out the benefits from a production point of view, “Automatic machinery cuts down on the labour required to carry out particular jobs. We have found it difficult to recruit recently and anything that reduces the need for labour helps with this problem”. Turnkey delivery and commissioning was provided for Covers, expertly managed by the Daltons Wadkin project installation team. “We have a dedicated group of engineers within our service department whose sole focus is on delivering a frictionless installation and dedicated ongoing support when required”, comments Andy. “We go to extreme lengths to ensure all our customers receive the best possible service for the life of the machine.” For more information on the Salvador range of crosscut saws: T: 0115 986 5201 E: info@daltonswadkin.com www.daltonswadkin.com
