Naidoc Edition
THE annual NAIDOC edition of Dubbo Photo News is here! Was it on again, off again? We flicked the switch to be ‘on’ and then official activities got bumped to November due to COVID-19. Our decision to go ahead anyway exactly reflects a mood running through all the stories inside, about our Aboriginal community members and organisations, which is positive and hungry for independence. Ngali Shaw, pictured here, is a case in point. He’s a young man who is writing his own story – not the one history or society might like him to have, but the one he wants. On Tuesday this week he released a new album and a music video from its first single. Inside this edition you’ll find more stories about people and organisations who are doing it for themselves, like the school student who is one of just nine in the state to be awarded a traineeship named after Australia’s first female Aboriginal pilot. How inspirational is that! Or, the man who lost his way to drugs and alcohol and is now mentoring others toward a better life, or the young couple redefining Aboriginal culture and economy in ethical and sustainable ways. These stories counter stereotypes and go a long way towards breaking down barriers. PHOTO: DUBBO PHOTO NEWS/EMY LOU
