TIME TO CARE By YVETTE AUBUSSON-FOLEY BILL Bladwell is the loving husband of Sue, and since her diagnosis of Alzheimer’s in 2011, he has been by her side, tirelessly supporting her in seeking treatments and therapy and prolonging her independence for as long as possible. Sue knows nothing can be done to reverse her condition and as it progresses her reliance on Bill’s care will only increase, but their lived experience is something they both want to share – to eradicate stigma around her diagnosis and by default address this year’s National Carer’s Week theme: Making Caring Visible. There are 904,400 carers in NSW and 2.6 million Australia-wide providing $17 billion per annum in support for their loved ones. What carers provide and sacrifice, just might be the real definition of ‘superhero’.
