Devastating 1955 flood: 70 years on By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN AND SHARON BONTHUYS THIS week marks 70 years since catastrophic f loods devastated NSW, including the area that is now the Narromine Shire. The once-in-a-century event ruined livelihoods, caused millions of dollars in damage, and sadly claimed 25 lives. Flooding impacted an area of NSW larger than England and Wales, creating an inland sea, stretching from Maitland in the east to as far as Nyngan in the west, and north to Walgett, Moree and the NSW-Queensland border. The natural disaster also gave birth to the NSW State Emergency Service, which also commemorates its 70th anniversary this year. The Narromine Star understands heavy rain had been falling over the Hunter River catchment and surrounds from October 1954, and on February 23, 1955, an intense monsoon storm formed over northern NSW, moving south, inundating the region with copious amounts of rain. Rivers and cowals across the region could not cope, adding more water to already thoroughly soaked plains and wetlands. On Friday, February 25, 1955, local communities felt the brunt of Mother Nature as f looding hit the region.

Council votes for Craigie Lea E4 rezone By SOPHIA MCCAUGHAN IT was a packed house for the fi rst council meeting of 2025, as Narromine Shire councillors fi nally came together to decide on the controversial proposed rezoning of council-owned land at Craigie Lea Lane from RU1 to E5 to facilitate the Narromine Heavy Industrial Precinct. The council chambers were rearranged to enable as many community members as possible to join the public gallery. The Narromine Star estimates there were at least 40 people in attendance, with those unable to fit into the room lining up outside to observe proceedings. A public forum was held before the Council meeting commenced, with five speakers addressing the Council. Robert Handsaker, Kevin Flinn and George Mack spoke in support of the proposal, Vaughan Ellen against the proposal, and Mark Beahan speaking as well. With discussion on the proposal moved to the front of the meeting schedule, several amendments to the planning proposal were introduced seeking to scale back from E5 Heavy Industrial zoning to E4 General Industrial. These amendments reportedly arose from community feedback ob-

tained through the consultation process. The Narromine Star presents this in-depth report looking at the decision by the Narromine Shire Council, five votes to two (with two abstentions) to support the rezoning of the Craigie Lea Lane land – but not as it was expected by the community.

Two councillors opposed to precinct abstain from voting IN dramatic and exceptional scenes, Narromine Shire councillors Judy Smith and Brian Leak abstained from voting on the planning proposal for the Narromine Heavy Industrial Precinct (HIP) at 397 Craigie Lea Lane.

Both Cr Smith and Cr Leak have been vocal and public in their opposition to the project, with both citing environmental and cultural concerns for the proposed use of the land. Of her decision, Cr Smith said after careful consideration she had reluctantly decided to abstain from voting on the matter. Continued page 4
