Warren CWA hosts district conference By TESS VAN LUBECK THE Warren branch of the NSW Country Women’s Association (CWA) successfully hosted the Far Western Group district conference over the weekend at the WOW centre. Representatives from the Far Western CWA branches including Nymagee, Trangie, Cobar, Bourke, Enngonia, Nyngan, Narromine, and others met to discuss a range of matters to go to the upcoming state conference. Creating draft motions at the meeting which will eventually be used by the CWA collective to lobby the government to implement, is a key agenda item at these quarterly conferences. “Every group gives a report, and we discuss the motions ahead of the state conference in May,” Group Agricultural and Environmental officer, Sharon McCalman, explained. Since its inception in 1922, the CWA has been responsible for lobbying governments on many issues, including women’s health, education, domestic and family violence, rural crime, and more. The CWA endeavours to keep abreast of social issues in order to make a positive impact on Australian communities and the nation as a whole, while providing a communal space for country women to enjoy themselves.
Rod’s Zoo2Zoo pushbike pilgrimage for a good cause By TESS VAN LUBECK WARREN local Rod Mildner saddled up and set off last Saturday on his annual Zoo2Zoo “pushbike pilgrimage”, cycling from Dubbo’s Taronga Western Plains Zoo to Melbourne Zoo and raising funds for the Black Dog Institute. Rod aims to complete the fi rst six days of the 1350km ride and stop over in Canberra to attend a family wedding, before completing the fi nal several hundred kilometres over the following couple of weeks. This year is a bit special: it marks Rod’s tenth consecutive year completing the ride for the Black Dog Institute, a cause he is passionate about. “Everyone has a family member or knows someone who has struggled mentally at some stage,” Rod told the Warren Star. “We all have our personal ups and downs, some more roller-coaster than others. “The Black Dog Institute is involved with research into mental illness, and is doing a great job creating awareness and getting people to talk openly about a very common

issue,” he added. Rod’s original fundraising
goal this year of $10,000 was surpassed almost a week be-
fore he set off on Saturday, March 1. At the time of writing, donations are hovering around the $12,000 mark. Every cent helps support a very good cause. The Black Dog Institute is an Australian not-for-profit connected to the University of NSW, Sydney. It researches the detection, prevention, and treatment of common mental health disorders and is the only medical research institute in Australia that investigates mental health across our lifespan. For those who want to support Rod and contribute to his campaign, he has a dedicated fundraising page under his name on the Team Black Dog Zoo2Zoo website. This year, the fi rst leg of Rod’s journey featured a cameo appearance from his grand-daughter Josie and daughter, Anna, also a cyclist, who rode alongside her father for the fi rst two days, which Rod said “makes it extra special.” “Please dig deep if you can. It’s a great feeling knowing that every kilometre may be gaining a few dollars. It makes the hills less painful!” he concluded, thanking his supporters.
