JUNE-AUG
As we celebrate the city’s 150th birthday this year, I am happy to report that parks and recreation is alive and well here in Plano. Since 1968, our essential services have helped unite people and strengthen the community through health and wellness programs, accessible parks and playgrounds, partnerships, and employment opportunities. Combined, the system also provides a special sense of belonging for residents of all ages.
I would like to extend a special welcome to our seasonal, parttime staff members who are so integral to our summer operations. Hiring events held earlier this year resulted in dozens of new hires to serve as lifeguards, recreation aides, camp counselors, and other roles. Whether you are new to the team or returning for another summer, we are excited to work with you.
In addition to the trademark summer programs you have grown to love, we continue to find more ways to get out and get moving. Families can see a different side of nature with new nighttime outings at Oak Point Park & Nature Preserve (page 28). Children of all abilities can also learn how to ride the big waves on the FlowRider at Jack Carter Pool (pages 13 and 23). For the older kids at our recreation centers, we have created Recreation Youth Advisory Committees to give our younger patrons a voice for helping shape our policies and programs. Applications are available at planoparks.org.
Plan on staying poolside this summer? Consider a family membership for unlimited access to our facilities (monthly packages start at just $49 for Plano families). Whether you are looking for a summer fun outlet or a path to personal achievement, we are here for you. Be sure to sign up for our newsletter and follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay upto-date on department news and happenings.
Here’s to another fun, safe and memorable summer!

This assessment does not guarantee registration spots for participants.
Level 1 is intended for children who are unfamiliar with or uncomfortable in aquatic environments. The objective of this course is to introduce students to the water and get them comfortable with the foundations of swimming. For successful completion of this level, students must demonstrate the ability to fully submerge and to propel themselves in the water on both their front and back unassisted by an instructor. The only prerequisite for this course is age.
The objective of Level 2 is for students to learn how to propel themselves on their front and back using alternating and simultaneous arm and leg action. For successful completion of this level, students must demonstrate front crawl with side breathing, the ability to rollover into back crawl, the ability to tread water, and rudimentary understanding of the elementary backstroke kick and dolphin kick, unassisted by an instructor. Prerequisites include ownership of a Level 1 certificate or the ability to demonstrate all skills required to pass Level 1.
The objective of Level 3 is continued improvement on front crawl, back crawl, dolphin kick, and treading water. The arms and coordination to the elementary backstroke, scissor kick, breaststroke kick and headfirst entries are introduced. For successful completion of this level, students must demonstrate rhythmic breathing on front crawl, back crawl with continuous arm motion and an effective flutter kick, coordinated elementary backstroke with flexed feet, and propulsive dolphin kick, scissor kick, and breaststroke kick. Prerequisites include ownership of a Level 2 certificate or the ability to demonstrate all skills required to pass Level 2.
The objective of Level 4 is for students to improve their skills and increase their endurance in front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Affordable housing has become extremely scarce. Across Texas, there is a shortage of rental homes affordable and available to lowincome households. Many of these households are cost burdened, spending more than half of their income on housing. Severely costburdened households are more likely than other renters to sacrifice other necessities like healthy food and healthcare to pay the rent, and to experience unstable housing situations like evictions. Is affordable housing becoming a concern for you? Attend this seminar for information about the types of affordable housing out there and the alternative to a one-person household. Bring your questions about housing assistance programs. Led by the street outreach social worker for the Wellness Center For Older Adults.

Do you have achy legs, varicose veins? Medtronic is making efforts to spread more awareness and education on vein disease. Much of the public is aware of the symptoms (varicose veins, achy legs, sleepless leg syndrome, ankle ulcers, etc.) and are only seeking treatment for the symptoms versus treatment for the actual disease. Due to the lack of awareness on the disease and the treatment options available, people can get caught in cycles of spending money on the recurring symptoms. With Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) affecting about 1 in 3 Americans, efforts are being made to spread vein disease awareness to communities. We find ways to get in front of physicians and the community to further educate at the onset, prevention, and treatment of CVI, as well as insurance covered treatment options.

Ride with us to this play at the WaterTower Theatre in Addison. Have you ever wished you were born in a different time? Alice Chandler did. Alice does not feel like she belongs in the 21st century, but she never dreamed that while at lunch with her best friend and writing partner, Garson Stein, a magical birthday wish would find them both instantly transported back in time to 1949 Hollywood. What do you do when you get your wish? Alice and Garson land smack in the golden age of movie musicals, where they land their dream job writing for L. B. Mayer at MGM and are surrounded by glittering stars of Hollywood, but they soon see that under all the glamour lies a studio system crumbling, the blacklist threatening their closest allies, and their eyes are opened to Hollywood’s darker side. The play begins at 7:30pm. We will depart from Liberty Recreation Center. Fee covers admission to the play and transportation.

The student/coach ratio is 4:1 for all classes ages 5-10. The ratio is 6:1 for classes ages 11 and up. To avoid cancellation of a class, a class may “make” with less than the minimum number of students, but with a reduced number of sessions. Classes at the same level and similar age groups may be combined at the discretion of High Point staff. Any group of two or more players may schedule a private class by contacting High Point staff at 972-941-7170.
Group lessons are very popular and some classes fill very quickly. To assure a continuous chain of instruction, we recommend that students enroll for multiple sessions at the time of initial registration. For example, a student should enroll for a Beginner session in the first session, an Advanced Beginner I group in the second session, and an Advanced Beginner II group in the third session.
High Point participates year round in the QuickStart Tennis play format, a program designed to help children learn, rally, and play quickly. Using shorter and lighter racquets, balls that are easy to keep in play, and court dimensions tailored to smaller players, youngsters from ages 5-10 pick up the game very quickly. In a short time, young players are able to keep the ball in play and play points just like older and more experienced players. In time, as students’ games improve and as they mature physically, they move to traditional rackets, balls, and courts. QuickStart is a great way to introduce children to the great game of tennis.
$2 50 per person per session
Adult (l8 & up) $3 00 per person per session
We encourage players to continue learning and playing in progressively more challenging courses. The goal is to have students playing tennis (in some form) as soon as possible. As a player improves, more course time is spent on point-play like situations. For children, the instructional/play sequence is: Beginner or Pee Wee I lessons (depending on age of child), Advanced Beginner or Pee Wee II lessons, and Future Stars or Pre Junior Development (Play and Instructional Programs), Competitive and High Performance.
Youth (l7 & under)
Adult (l8 & up) . . .
