Happy New Year! by D on Em de
W
hat? You thought the year starts on January 1st? Not if you are a dealer, vendor, or connected to Parts Unlimited in some way. If you are, it started the fourth week of August in Madison, WI. I’m talking about the annual “NVP Product Expo” that the company has held there for many years. That’s when our new year really starts.
As the week neared its conclusion, many invited Parts Unlimited dealers arrived for their chance to enjoy the unveiling of many 2017 products in a conventional trade show environment. They also attended the annual Meet & Greet reception, which this year included an expanded custom bike show where dealers brought some of their cool custom project bikes for all to see.
You’ll see our report of this year’s event starting on page 18. There were a number of things that we noted that deserved a place in the story. It all started with the “NVP,” which stands for National Vendor Presentations. The first two days were devoted to these classroom or theater presentations by selected Parts vendors who went over their new 2017 products and programs.
Be sure to read the wrap up of this year’s Motocross Outdoor National series, which included a 1-2 finish in the 250cc championship for Thor-sponsored Yamaha riders Cooper Webb and Alex Martin. We also feature a Q&A with the new champ, Cooper Webb.
Two of the nights at the show featured some notable events. The first was the annual LeMans Night of the Stars where sales reps and staff were recognized not only for exceptional sales results, but also for their years of service to the company. On another night, Michelin Tires hosted many of the attendees for their third annual NVP/Michelin Power Jam, a fun night at Madison’s Majestic Theater where sales reps, vendors and LeMans staff join together on stage for a night of music and song.
And we also say goodbye to an old friend to everyone in the Motorcycle Land Speed Record community, Sam Wheeler. I personally knew Sam dating back to the early 1970s, and like everyone was shocked and saddened when he was fatally injured in a shakedown run on July 25th at the Bonneville Salt Flats. We all had high hopes that he could break the existing world record there this year in his Parts Unlimited/Parts Europe/Drag Specialties-sponsored streamliner. Godspeed Sam. ■

nce again, the motorcycling world’s attention landed on the Black Hills of South Dakota for the annual Sturgis Rally. However, unlike last year’s gala 75th anniversary where record crowds jammed in to celebrate, this year’s event saw fewer attendees. The upside was that it was easier to get around and enjoy all the great riding this section of the country offers. One of the big events on this year’s agenda was the Moto Stampede at the Buffalo Chip, the scene of some exciting Super Hooligan racing and the location where Indian Motorcycle unveiled its new FTR750 flat track race bike. We were lucky enough to have photographer Sara Liberte on hand to document some of the happenings at the 2016 rally. ■

ach year at the ceremony inducting a new class into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame, an existing Hall of Famer is honored as an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend. For 2016, the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend is Dick “King Richard” Burleson, the most successful racer in the history of the AMA National Enduro Championship.
“One man has achieved more than any other in America’s grandest and oldest off-road racing discipline: Dick Burleson,” said Ken Ford, a member of the Hall of Fame executive committee and treasurer of the AMA board of directors. “We are pleased to recognize Mr. Burleson as our 2016 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend and showcase the drive, athleticism, talent and focus that powered him to eight consecutive AMA National Enduro Championships.” Burleson, who was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1999, will be honored mid October at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando alongside the Class of 2016.
“First of all, I would like to congratulate all the members of the Class of 2016 for being elected to the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame,” Burleson said. “As for me, I’m humbled to be selected as the 2016 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend. It’s a great honor to be recognized among other legends of motorcycling.” From 1974 to 1981, Burleson won eight consecutive AMA National Enduro Championships. In addition to his incredible domestic record, Burleson also won eight consecutive gold medals in the International Six Days Trials. The Class of 2016 includes road racing champion Miguel Duhamel, Indian motorcycle designer and engineer Charles Franklin, racer and tuner Chris Haines, engine builder Dennis Mahan, race frame builder Jeff Cole, desert racer Jack Johnson, motorcycling pioneer Gloria Struck and dirt track racer Ronnie Jones. ■

another win at Tennessee. He went 1-1 at Redbud for a perfect day. There were more wins at Southwick and Spring Creek and another perfect 1-1 at Unadilla and more podiums at Budds Creek and Ironman. All in all, Webb took the 2016 250cc Motocross National Championship with 495 points, 8 wins and 16 podiums out of 24 motos. Webb’s Thor teammate, Alex Martin, had an amazing season as well. Alex finished second in the 250cc points chase with solid rides all year long. Martin was almost always on the podium and threatening to win. He put in a solid string of podiums starting at Hangtown, then Glen Helen, Thunder Valley, Tennessee, Redbud, Southwick and Spring Creek. Following the opening round at Hangtown, the whole 2016 Lucas Oil AMA/Pro Motocross Championships show made its way to the famous Glen Helen Raceway in Southern California.
A Season of Battle
He scored his first moto win at Washougal and then another moto win at Budds Creek before finishing the season with a podium at the Ironman. By the end of the season Alex Martin had scored 422 points, 14 podiums and 2 wins out of 24 motos.

arts Unlimited has a long history of giving back to the sports that have made the distributor so successful. That’s why the company sponsors series, events and riders at all levels and in almost all aspects of powersports competition. One of the fiercest series around is the National Pro Motocross Championships. The Outdoor Nationals for the 2016 season were vastly competitive and hard fought and your Parts Unlimited/Thor riders led the way for a majority of the events.
250CC MOTOCROSS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP In the 250cc National Motocross Series, a team of Thor riders dominated most of the season with Thor’s Cooper Webb taking the Championship. Webb started the outdoor season strong and confident after coming off his second consecutive 250cc Supercross regional title. Jeremy Martin, Alex’s brother, teammate and defending 2015 250cc National Motocross Champion, started the 2016 season determined to defend his No. 1 plate against all comers. He put in a great effort to do just that with a podium at the opener in Hangtown, and then moto wins at Glen Helen and Thunder Valley. He earned more moto wins at Southwick and Spring Creek, but had to drop out of the series after Washougal due to injuries. Still he finished sixth in the points chase with 321 points, 8 podiums and 4 wins out of 18 motos raced. The Yamaha super team included another Thor rider, Aaron Plessinger. If you recognize the last name it’s because Aaron’s father is multi-time GNCC Champion Scott Plessinger. Scott passed on to Aaron his work ethic and relentless drive to win. The young Plessinger took podiums at Hangtown, High Point and Unadilla. Then he finished the season in style by winning the final moto of the series at the Ironman. Plessinger finished the 250cc MX National fifth in points with 351 points, 4 podiums and 1 win in 24 motos. Of course there were many other great riders in the 250cc class in 2016. Pro Circuit’s Joey Savatgy finished third in the title chase with five moto wins early in the season. But try as he would,

The all-Thor team featured Cooper Webb as team captain in the MX1 division, with Alex Martin in the MX2 slot, while Jason Anderson rode in the Open class. ■
450CC MX NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP Finishing third in the 450cc Motocross title chase was Thor’s Marvin Musquin, behind first place rider Ken Roczen and runner up Eli Tomac. Musquin started out with several top five finishes, and then really started moving up around mid-season, steadily placing his KTM on the podium. He earned his first podium at High Point and then another one at Southwick. He started a streak of seven podiums in a row beginning at Spring Creek and lasting through Budds Creek. With a little luck and a stronger start at the beginning of the season Musquin will be a contender for the 450cc Championship in 2017. Jason Anderson was another Thor rider who served notice this season. Anderson rode his Husqvarna to the brand’s first Supercross victory in decades earlier this year. In the 450cc Motocross Nationals, he was a favorite to run up front in the title chase.
Aaron Plessinger, another Thor-clad Yamaha rider, finished out the season fifth in the 250cc National Motocross Championships.
Anderson was always in the hunt, but injuries stalled his charge and he had to drop out of the series after podiuming at High Point. Taking time to get fixed up and heal, Anderson came back for the final race of the series at the Ironman and put in a solid performance going 5-5 for fifth overall. If he can stay healthy, Anderson could easily be top three in the 2017 title chase with a good shot at the championship. The American Thor riders were so impressive in the 2016 Motocross National Series that three of them represented the United States in the 2016 Motocross of Nations in Maggiora, Italy in September. Cooper Webb, Alex Martin and Jason Anderson raced to land team USA in third place.
There’s no doubt that the bar-banging action of the 2016 Motocross Championships had fans shouting and hollering in support of their favorite riders.
Thor/Yamaha rider Alex Martin finished second in the series points run, behind Webb and ahead of third place Joey Savatgy.
In the 250cc National Motocross Series Thor/Yamaha rider Cooper Webb and his teammates Alex Martin and Jeremy Martin dominated most of the season. Webb clinched the title at Budd’s Creek.
When the season finally wrapped, Thor/KTM rider Marvin Musquin finished third in the 450cc title chase behind first place Ken Roczen and second place rider Eli Tomac.

IN TRIBUTE
he motorsports world was shocked and saddened on July 25th by the death of motorcycle land speed competitor Sam Wheeler in a crash at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Wheeler was piloting his EZ-HOOK streamliner in a shakedown run for an upcoming attempt on the world’s motorcycle land speed record. For unexplained reasons, Sam lost control just after the two-mile marker and suffered injuries that would prove fatal later that day at a nearby medical center. In 2006, a tire failure ended an attempt that might otherwise have ended up with a world’s record. Sam was running at a would-be record speed of 355 miles per hour on his first run when his front tire came apart resulting in a crash. His damaged machine could not be repaired in time to make another attempt that season. Unsure at the time about his future with speed record attempts, Wheeler was later introduced to LeMans chairman Fred Fox, who offered the needed support to totally update Sam’s streamliner. The Kawasaki ZX-11 engine was replaced by a Suzuki Hayabusa engine that was purpose-built by Vance & Hines in collaboration with Terry Kizer of Mr. Turbo. Numerous other LeMans vendors also came on board with support and technology and the future looked bright for an assault this fall to not only break the existing world record of 376.363 mph, but to exceed 400 miles per hour.
Sam Wheeler is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carol Wheeler, son Ben Wheeler, daughter Dayna Wheeler, and granddaughter Samantha Burr Wheeler. LeMans Corporation and all of us at Parts Magazine extend our deepest sympathies to the Wheeler family for their loss. ■

BACK IN THE MADISON GROOVE NVP/MICHELIN JAM RETURNS FOR THIRD YEAR
T
hird time’s the charm, right? With the NVP/Michelin Power Jam, it certainly seems like it.
The wildly popular concert, featuring the combined talents of a number of Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties sales reps and LeMans vendors and employees, returned to the stage at Madison’s Majestic Theater before a packed house. And, for the third year running, it was a resounding hit. We talked with Michelin’s Eric Miller about the history and future of the event that has clearly cemented itself as one of the must-do after-hour events of the NVP Product Expo:
Parts Magazine: How did the Jam get started? Eric Miller: Working with the different reps, it seemed like we
were always talking about music, and more often than not, the rep would mention that they played in a band or at least played an instrument for fun. After seeing how many reps played something, or sang, I would joke that we could get a really killer band together if we could just coordinate the travel. Then, at a meeting with some RSMs, music came up again, and someone mentioned that NVP solves the travel logistics.
Ladies and gentlemen, the NVP/Michelin Power Jam “house” band! From left: Benny Harwell, Dave Jengo, Charlie Addams and Torsten Corum. (Not visible are Todd Peterson on drums and Matt Norman on guitar.)
I offered to plan the event if LeMans would support us hosting an after-hours party. They were eager, and the rest is history.

TecMate’s Martin Human shows that he’s just as talented with the keyboards as he is well-versed in the science of battery chargers.
Racer X publisher and noted blues guitarist/musician Scott Wallenberg jumped on stage for a guest spot, a performance that nearly brought down the house.
For three years running now Parts rep Matt Norman has shredded the lead guitar in the Jam’s “house” band. This year he performed some blistering Pink Floyd covers.
There’s talent throughout the ranks at LeMans. Parts Unlimited rep Don Buss rips it up while performing with the NVP/Michelin Jam “house” band.
What were your thoughts when you first launched the Jam three years ago? I was terrified. I could see it being either a great success, or a complete train wreck. I had committed to running the show, and to be honest I had no experience at all with putting on a concert.
26
Are you shocked by how popular the Jam has become? Yes and no. Of course I am shocked and humbled by how well received the event was. Looking back, I think that it was destined for success (not because of me though). The people involved are all outstanding musicians and every one of them was extremely helpful from the beginning.
I had no idea how much work went into planning and preparing for the few hours of performance. LeMans has some professional-caliber performers, and they made sure that we were prepared. As a team, we made sure that the venue provided the equipment, the sound mixing, a professional sound man to run the show behind the scenes, and so on.
They worked together to make sure that everyone knew a large list of songs to play, so that there wouldn’t be any dead air. And they remain humble too – even though we have almost what you’d call a house band – Benny Harwell, Matt Norman, Dave Jengo, Torsten Corum, Todd Petterson, Kent DeBie, and Charlie Addams, they still encourage anyone to come up and sing, play, or do whatever they do best.
I rented equipment so that people wouldn’t have to travel with their instruments, but it has grown so big that everyone wants to have their own beloved guitar or bass or amp, and I no longer have to bring much equipment.
That’s why we have so many others who get forced to come up and perform, like Jim Matchette, Rob Bluma, Adam Alberghine, Jenna Lee, and so many more.

What’s your favorite part of the night? My favorite is in the beginning, watching the guys get set up and sound-checking the equipment. To me, that is when they go from being a bunch of individuals to being a single unit. I love watching them get everything dialed in, knowing how much work they put into it. When the audience gets there, and they appreciate how great the guys sound, I think a lot of them are just unaware of how tough it is to get to that point. That makes me feel proud that the band can make it look so seamless. From left: Michelin’s Ron Bowen and Eric Miller join Drag Specialties rep Benny Harwell and Michelin’s Ross Shields to take to the stage for a round of applause from a thankful audience.
Now the other vendors have gotten involved, and the level of talent keeps rising. Martin Human from TecMate and Scott Wallenberg from Racer X are just two examples – great musicians, great friends, and great talents who contribute a ton.
Any touring plans?
Actually, yes! We are exploring the possibility of bringing the event to other LeMans functions. We’re still in the exploratory stage, trying to figure out if the logistics will work, but most definitely! ■

ooper Webb has had quite a year in 2016. It started with the 250cc West Supercross Championship where he not only defended his title, but won it despite a broken wrist.
The Thor/Parts Unlimited rider first won the season opener at Anaheim and then made it three in a row by following up that victory with wins at San Diego and Anaheim II. All in all, he won five of nine main events and seemed unstoppable. Then, he broke his wrist near the end of the season, but hung on hard enough to claim the No. 1 plate by a single point. Because of the wrist injury, the outlook for the 2016 Motocross Nationals looked grim, but Webb worked with his trainer and doctor to make it to the starting line at Hangtown. He surprised everyone, including himself, by going 4-5 for third overall. Then he won the opening moto at Glen Helen

and everyone forgot the wrist injury. Riding for Yamaha, Webb put together eight moto victories and 16 podiums to dominate the 250cc class. Webb had two perfect days going 1-1 at Redbud and 1-1 again at Unadilla and clinched the title before the season even ended. It was another stellar performance for the young racer. All year Webb put Thor Racewear out front, and Parts Unlimited and Thor are more than pleased to have such a great rider wearing their colors. “It has been an honor supporting Cooper on his way to his first National Motocross Championship,” said Eric Storz, Thor’s marketing coordinator. “Having a rider with such heart and dedication is so valuable to all of us at Thor, as he brings that same passion to help us test and develop our products.

“Cooper’s ‘never say die’ attitude aligns well with our brand and values, and we’re excited to announce that we’ve signed him for the next three years as he moves up to the Factory Yamaha 450 team.” With a National Motocross Championship, Webb will get to choose a single-digit number for his career and No. 2, No. 8 and No. 9 are open. He can always stay with No. 17 if he chooses; he’s done pretty well with it thus far. He’s also moving up to the 450cc class riding for the Yamaha factory team in 2017 and served as Team Captain of the USA Motocross of Nations Team in September. To warm up for the Motocross of Nations, Webb entered and won the Charlotte MXGP of the Americas, beating three-time MX2 GP Champion Jeffrey Herlings with a come-from-behind victory in the second moto. It’s been a very good year for the 20 year old racer.
COOPER WEBB
Despite his wrist injury, Cooper Webb won the opening moto at Glen Helen, a win that foreshadowed a season of strong racing.
Parts Magazine had a quick conversation with Webb about his year, season and future plans.
Parts Magazine: What was the highlight of your season? Cooper Webb: Muddy Creek (Tennessee) really turned the season around for me, being able to come from behind and win in front of my hometown fans was an awesome moment. Also, being able to wrap the championship up a round early at Budds Creek was unbelievable.
Who is the toughest rider your regularly face off against? Joey Savatgy was good at the beginning of the season, but overall my teammate Alex Martin was my strongest

competition week in and week out. Alex got stronger as the season went on. I had to get stronger too to stay ahead of him.
What’s the key factor in putting together a winning season? Lots of hard work and self-belief. It took a lot of self-confidence to believe I could still win when I was coming in injured.
How do you prepare for the outdoor MX Nationals? A lot of work with my trainer, Gareth Swanepoel, and lots of testing with my Yamalube Star Racing Yamaha team.
Do you get any time off now?
What are your plans for next year? I will be riding for Factory Yamaha on the 450cc and I couldn’t be more excited! I’m really looking forward to moving up to the premier class and battling with guys I’ve looked up to since I was young.

What’s your favorite product from Thor?
Not too much, just a little break after the Motocross of Nations. I’ll be racing the MXGP round at Charlotte and then move up to the 450cc for MXoN and I’m highly honored to be a part of that team so there’s not much time off in my future right now.

BACKPACKS & LUGGAGE
Smart Storage
A Large, Customizable Bag for Riders Inside, the Large Roller has a fleece-lined goggle pocket for up to six pairs of goggles, and there is a removable, padded changing mat. The interior also features fleece-lined adjustable dividers, which allow a rider to build custom-sized cubbyholes for their gear. And, because American Kargo uses standardized dimensions in their product line, their smaller gear bags can nest inside the Large Roller for even more storage options. Externally, the Large Roller has a rugged telescoping handle and heavy-duty wheels for hauling gear across every terrain a rider might encounter. The Large Roller is constructed of a PVC-backed 600D fabric, and areas that are prone to wear are all reinforced, including a honeycomb layer on the bottom of the bag.
The Large Roller bag is available in black and high-viz.
A
merican Kargo’s Large Roller bags are a testament to what the company is all about — riders designing and building bags for other riders.
Everyone who works at the American Kargo headquarters in Pittsburgh rides in some fashion, including founder Rob Schlueter. The inspiration to dive into bag manufacturing came from his dissatisfaction with the other options on the market. “Anyone who’s spent a significant amount of time riding starts to develop an understanding of what works for them and what doesn’t,” Schlueter says. “When it comes to the bag category, there were a lot of us who felt it was lacking. So I sat down and basically said, ‘If we were going to rip a bag apart and rebuild one that we wanted, that would function for us, what would it look like?’ Features, materials, functionality, things of that nature, and we’re constantly going back to the drawing board and looking at the products that exist in the marketplace and the ones that we build ourselves, and continuing to try to make what we would consider the perfect product.”
There is also a prominent, customizable number plate on the top of the bag. A separate number kit allows riders to put their race number — or the number of their favorite racer — on the bag. This feature is perfect for race teams who want matching bags without worrying about which bag belongs to which racer. American Kargo offers a lifetime warranty on all of their products, and they will fix or replace a product if any failure occurs. ■
»» Talk to your Parts Unlimited rep for more details about
the Large Roller and American Kargo’s other bag options, and head online to www.americankargo.com.
Work got underway in 2012 as Schlueter built a team with a total of 50 years of experience in the powersports industry. Two years later, American Kargo was launched. The Large Roller, available in black and hi-viz from Parts Unlimited, is the bag designed for the rider who needs to pack all their gear and stay organized. The 36-inch x 18-inch x 16-inch Large Roller has 8,000 cubic inches of storage space.

ven a race-spec engine won’t get you down the road without a chain and sprockets to transfer all of that horsepower to the rear wheel. RK Chain has teamed up with Driven to provide three highperformance chain and sprocket kits, pairing products that will suit the needs for three separate aims — OEM replacement, quick acceleration and racing. All three of the RK/Driven kits are available in applications for Japanese and European motorcycles. It’s a long list, so check with your Parts Unlimited rep for all of the models. The RK/Driven 520 Aluminum Race Kit includes RK’s premium lightweight RX or XW-ring sealed racing chain in a gold finish. The complementary sprockets include a Driven 7075 T6511 lightweight aluminum black hard anodized rear sprocket and a C45 steel case-hardened and quenched front sprocket. The race kit combines race gearing and a lightweight rear sprocket to reduce rotating mass, resulting in quicker starts and less time to reach redline in every gear. Customers who are less concerned with lap time and more focused on getting a good launch will probably opt for the 520 Steel Quick Acceleration Kit. Like the racing kit, this one starts with RK’s RX or XW-ring sealed racing chain, available in a gold or natural finish. The Driven sprockets in the quick acceleration kit include a premium Driven C45 steel alloy black case-hardened rear sprocket and a Driven C45 steel case-hardened and quenched front sprocket.

The Driven C45 steel alloy black case-hardened rear sprocket and C45 steel case-hardened and quenched front sprocket will be sized to OE gearing. The OEM kit is ideal for riders who need high-mileage performance, and it includes a 20,000-mile warranty on all components. (The warranty is for the original purchaser only, and is good for 20,000 miles of street riding or two years, whichever comes first.) RK’s RX chains have an RX-ring shaped seal, which has two lubrication pools and two seal points for less torsional friction, increased high-stress performance and longer life than standard O-ring chains. Meanwhile, the XW chains feature XW-ring seals with three lubrication pools to protect against abrasion, heat buildup, torsional flex and loss of lubricant. The XW seal design also resists compression and distortion for more efficiency and a longer life. ■

The handcrafted composite shell is produced in four shell sizes for minimized mass and drag. The road ahead is seen through a fog-free Icon Optics shield with a RapidRelease release system, while the interior of the helmet has a Hydradry liner that helps riders keep a cool head. On the other end of the spectrum, the Variant Deployed helmet is Icon’s motocross-inspired street lid. The oversized 3D-molded shield provides excellent clarity and range of vision and the visor’s integrated supervents are designed to block sunlight while simultaneously reducing lift at speed. The fiberglass/Dyneema/carbon fiber shell is best suited for a customer with a long oval head shape.
Icon’s Merc Deployed jacket
The Variant Deployed’s black camo is all stealth, with the exception of the bright yellow Icon graphics. The green camo option sports day glow orange graphics. It’s like a hunter’s safety vest, but much, much cooler. The Airframe Pro and the Variant are available in sizes 2XS to 3XL and carry both DOT and ECE certification. The softshell chassis of the Merc Deployed jacket gives a casual look to a serious jacket. Its integrated nylon paneling and D3O impact protectors in the shoulders, elbows and back give it an extra barrier during asphalt combat. A hood, liner, underarm ventilation zippers, headphone pass-through and oversized kangaroo pockets give the Merc a lot of perks. The sizing ranges from S to 4XL. The Anthem Deployed mesh glove, also in sizes S to 4XL, has a one-piece Battlehide goatskin palm for a comfortable, seamless grip. The sublimated poly backhand carries the camo print, cleverly hiding the D3O knuckle insert. Smartphone junkies benefit from a touchscreen enabled area on the finger. The Anthem also has a nylon webbing pull tag, debossed neoprene cuff and a rubber Icon badge. Riders who want to be decked out in Icon’s full Deployed uniform can also get the matching belt and wallet. They both come in the green camo print with day glow orange detailing. ■

The Flying Machine Factory 40+ Years of Enthusiasm and Passion
For FMF, it’s always been as much about enthusiasm and improved performance, as it has been about handcrafting exhaust products that enhance the ride and fuel the passion for riding.
I
n the late ’60s and early ’70s as motorcycles of all types and brands were just beginning to come into their own, there was this kid named Don Emler. He was an enthusiast in the purest sense of the word – he was just out there having fun riding dirt bikes. Like many back in those days — as the European, and then the Japanese dirt machines were emerging and evolving — Emler’s enthusiasm for riding led to some competitive racing. And, like most competitors, he started looking for an edge. He started experimenting with his own bikes, and then the machines owned by his friends, always looking to improve rideability and performance. That drive to improve performance, to find the competitive edge, blossomed into a passion. Emler soon realized that his true passion was not as much about racing, but more for improving a motorcycle’s performance, specifically its exhaust system. He was equally as committed to building those exhausts by hand. All of this, that early mix of love for dirt machines and the passion for performance, is the foundation on which FMF was built. To this day, Don Emler is still incredibly enthusiastic about riding, and about building performance boosting exhaust products with the “many hands” of FMF’s production staff and R&D team.

All of FMF’s exhaust products embody that enthusiasm and passion. Take an FMF Gnarly pipe and Turbinecore 2.1 silencer for instance. Here is an aftermarket product that will really pack a punch for a two-stroke bike, new or old. We’re talking maximized bottom-end and mid response, and increased durability, along with a Forestry-approved high-flowing spark arrestor with a bigger canister body and high quality packing. Not only will that off-road rider be stoked on the improved performance, he’ll also have a pipe that requires very little maintenance. On the four-stroke side, riders will truly appreciate FMF’s anodized blue titanium and Carbon Fiber Factory 4.1 RCT muffler or full system. This exhaust has it all – a great look, a fantastic sound, and it can help enhance rideability and performance. FMF offers more than 240 different exhaust items for 2017 machines, and the majority of those products are available immediately. Across the five major brands — Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, and Yamaha — FMF has at least 35 FMF exhaust part numbers that are 2017 fitment. Grom Upgrades
New Seats for Honda’s Cult Bike
Saddlemen now has a trio of upgraded OE replacement seats for the popular Honda Grom. The lineup also includes a signature model from stunt rider Aaron Colton.
S
ince it was first unveiled to a U.S. audience 2013, the Honda Grom has gone on to achieve cult status among a legion of riders drawn to the bigtime fun factor that’s all packed into the 125cc mini-bike. As with most popular bikes, the aftermarket has answered the call to customize the Grom with a myriad of performance and styling parts all meant to improve on the OE offering. Now, Saddlemen is addressing a common complaint about the stock seat — it is hard and uncomfortable — with a trio of new seats, including a signature model from stunt rider Aaron Colton. The team at Saddlemen know a thing or six about making seats that are not only comfortable, but are also stylish and built to perform. After all, in addition to the handlebars and foot pegs, a seat serves as the main interface between a rider and his motorcycle. These three seats all feature Saddlemen’s exclusive SaddleGel, a specially formulated material that provides excellent support and dampens road vibrations. SaddleGel is especially helpful in thinner seats where foam alone it not enough to provide a smooth, comfortable ride.

That SaddleGel is used along with Saddlemen’s Progressive High-Density Foam for a foundation that provides comfort and vehicle control. All of this results in a seat that alleviates fatigue, thus making the ride more enjoyable, a winning combination sure to be appreciated by all those Grommers, ripping around town and on rallies from one end of the country to the other. Saddlemen’s Grom lineup includes a low, pleated version, a bench-style seat built for sporty riding and the Colton signature model, which features Colton’s number 93 stitched into the cover. The low, pleated model adds a bit of a Café vibe to the Grom, its old-school pleats a knowing nod to decades of tried-and-true motorcycle styling. The bench-style seat is covered with Saddlemen’s signature gripper material, a fabric that helps keep a rider firmly planted in the saddle. With the Colton model, Grom owners get a seat that’s built to handle the kind of freestyle tricks for which the young stunter is known. Three strips of gripper material on the rear of the seat keeps the rider from sliding around, and the flat seating area is perfect for everyday riding. ■

amso introduces the exciting new Camso DTS 129 dirt-to-snow track and ski bike conversion system. Your bike conversion customers will receive truly outstanding performance in soft, deep snow as well as on packed trails with the conversion system.
The DTS 129 includes a lightweight polymer ski for the front of the bike, and a track system to replace the bike’s rear wheel.
That’s because the Camso DTS 129 system leverages Camso’s long and successful history (company formerly known as Camoplast Solideal) with snowmobile tracks and ATV/UTV track conversion systems, and provides total integration with the base vehicle. The Camso DTS 129 is built on a rubber-mounted steel-tube sub-frame with an ergonomically designed aluminum side panel and high density polyethylene top cover featuring an integrated snow flap and anchors for a storage bag and a gas can. Underneath, a patent-pending chain drive system with three interchangeable sprocket sizes delivers power to the self-aligning 129-inch-by-12½-inch track with 2½inch staggered lugs that is specifically engineered for this application. The patent-pending single-rail suspension features torsion-springs, a gas shock and T-slot hyfax that can be replaced without removing the skid frame. This single-rail suspension is carefully engineered to maintain stability and ride quality on any surface and in any snow conditions.
Camso’s track conversion system is designed for precise handling in technical riding conditions.
Up front, the ski and strut unit provides easy steering and smooth leaning transitions for precise handling in technical riding conditions as well as enhanced side-hilling capabilities. The patent-pending four-keel ski features two replaceable carbide runners and two replaceable steel side keels. A polymer ski mount with factory-set casters positions the lightweight polymer ski. Stopping power is provided by a dual-piston hydraulic disc brake inboard on the drive axle, with a pre-bled master cylinder to speed installation. Covered by a two-year limited warranty, all sub-units of the system are engineered for total system integration with easy installation and adjustment. Camso single-rail suspension and four keel technology maintains proper dynamic balance to retain the natural dirt bike feeling and behavior riders want while on the snow. Camso DTS 129 track conversion systems are now available for numerous late model Honda, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, and Yamaha dirt bikes. ■

WHEELS
Style and Utility
Two New Colors for the 387X Moose Utility Division’s popular 387X wheel is now available in vibrant blue and stunning red color options.
W
hen it comes to customizing a new ATV or UTV, many customers are going for the perfect combination of utility and style. Given the workout those four-wheelers perform, any aftermarket part or accessory needs to get the job done without worry or fuss. And when it comes to aesthetics, let’s face it, everyone wants their machine to look good. Long a popular choice in Moose Utility Division’s custom wheel lineup, the 387X is a real workhorse that’s built to meet the very definitive demands of the ATV and UTV market. Now the team at Moose has upped the ante a bit by introducing two new color options for the well-liked wheel. For years the 387X wheel has been a popular choice for UTV and ATV owners because of its rugged dependability and stylish good looks. It’s also available in the standard gloss black or machined finishes.
In addition to that standard gloss black or machine finish, the 387X is now available in a brilliant blue and a stunning red. All colorways include a chrome center cap and rivets and standard, but lug nuts must be ordered separately. Sure they’re extra pretty now, but what about real-world usage? Moose Utility Division changed nothing when adding the two new options. That 387X wheel is still just as rugged and tough as it was when it was first introduced. These aluminum wheels are ready to hit the trail as soon as they’re bolted up. Designed to shoulder a load, the 12x7 front wheel can handle capacities up to 375 pounds, while the rear 12x8 wheel can take up to 1,150 pounds. These load ratings meet or exceed all current market requirements so you can bet they’ll stand up those big, popular machines. The wheels are also available in 14x7 and 14x8 sizes. Moose Utility Division even thoroughly X-rays the wheels while they’re on the production line to make sure that they’ll stand up to the company’s very rigid standards. Again, ATV and UTV owners really put their machines to work. Given that many of those owners won’t even think about leaving the dealership with a new stock machine — wheel and tire kits are practically a given in that world — point your customers to Moose Utility Division’s 387X wheels in the new blue and red color options. You might also mention Moose’s lineup of rugged ATV and UTV tires like the Tuf Trac, Splitter, Switchback, 901 X or 8-Ball. ■

Yoshimura R&D has some brand-new exhausts aimed at two of the hottest markets in the industry right now, Adventure Sport/Touring and those small-displacement street bikes. OptiMate1 Gets Updated Packaging, New Perks
T
he popular OptiMate 1 battery charger has undergone a number of improvements with the intention of making it even easier for dealers to sell, including straightforward new packaging that ensures the company’s smallest battery charger is easy to spot. At a glance, the new presentation packaging makes it obvious that the OptiMate 1 is a high-quality battery charger with high-quality accessories. Meant to be displayed at the counter or hung on a rack or wall, the new package for the OptiMate 1 is designed to encourage customers to take notice and even make an impulse buy. The actual product is visible, and easy to understand information on the front of the packaging lets customers know all the pertinent details. The charger includes high-end accessories such as the O-01 weatherproof battery cable, which comes with ¼-inch rings that perfectly fit powersports battery post mounting hardware. The -40°F low-temperature cable rating guarantees that the battery can be maintained in the vehicle even when bitterly cold, and the rubber boot and cap protect the SAE connector against water and dust. The O-04 battery clips are custom designed to grip onto flat, square or round battery posts. The soft molded handles add to a convenient user experience.
The packaging on the popular OptiMate 1 has received a complete makeover, a new look designed to make it easier to merchandize and encourage customers to take notice.
The four-step charging processor and controlled-charge algorithm have also been improved. A deep discharged battery now benefits from a pulse wake-up mode prior to constant current bulk charging. The charger will try to wake up that weak low-volt battery for up to two hours. If the battery cannot recover, the smart charger will not simply green light the battery. Instead, it will warn the rider that their battery cannot hold a charge. For a battery that recovered and was brought up to full charge, the OptiMate “24-7-365” maintenance mode is dialed in for AGM batteries. OptiMate guarantees that the battery will get a strong and long-lasting charge using this maintenance mode. While the perks have improved, the suggested retail price for the OptiMate 1 remains the same — $39.95. Be sure to check out the new OptiMate 1 (p/n 3807-0260) or, if you prefer, the Moose Utility Division’s branded OptiMate 1 (p/n 3807-0315), which has identical features, but is dressed in those rugged Moose colors. ■
There’s a good chance some of your fourwheeler customers are diehard Moose Utility Division fans. If so, point them to the specially branded OptiMate 1; it has all those great features and that familiar Moose logo and rugged look.

Akrapovic Enters the Sport SXS Market
Akrapovič now offers a titanium slip-on exhaust* and optional link pipe for Yamaha’s FZ-10. The addition gives the hot model a new look and a nice boost of power and torque.
EXHAUSTS
Titanium for Trail and Street
A
krapovič’s latest titanium products have both street and track riders covered, with the new Evolution Line (Titanium) system for the 2016 Yamaha YXZ1000R side-by-side as well as a slipon for the 2017 Yamaha FZ-10/MT-10*. The name Akrapovič is familiar to most in the powersports industry. The company, founded in 1991, says the aim of their exhaust systems is to deliver increased performance throughout the entire rpm range, increasing power and torque as well as creating a smoother response from the engine. The Evolution Line (Titanium) exhaust is the new full system for the Yamaha YXZ1000R. Due in November of 2016, it marks the first time Akrapovič has produced an exhaust system for a pure sport side-by-side. The system is constructed of high-grade lightweight titanium, which reduces weight from the stock system by a little more than 50 percent. The system is topped off with a handcrafted carbon fiber end cap. Akrapovič reports that the Evolution system adds 5.5hp at 8,850rpm. Remapping the ECU is not required, but it is recommended. Akrapovič has already teamed up with Dynojet to produce an Evolution Line-specific map. In addition to the power and torque gains, Akrapovič says the lighter weight of the Evolution exhaust increases the maneuverability and handling of the YXZ1000R, making it even more of an agile machine. Not a company to forget the importance of sound, Akrapovič tasked their “sound engineers” with producing a louder, deeper and fuller tone for the Evolution Line. A system with a spark arrester is available for the U.S. market to comply with off-road regulations.
With its Evolution Line full system for the Yamaha YXZ1000R, Akrapovič has built its first exhaust system for the pure sport side-by-side market.
The YXZ1000R has a compact design, so Akrapovič’s engineers had to design a system that would easily fit into the small space allotted for the exhaust. On top of that, they needed an exhaust with durability since the YXZ1000R was not designed for lazy Sunday driving. On the street side of things, the Slip-On Line from Akrapovič now includes a titanium canister for the 2017 Yamaha FZ-10/MT-10. The updated muffler shape is inspired by Akrapovič’s involvement in road racing, and is intentionally designed to have a “Grand Prix” look. The slip-on includes a carbon fiber heat shield. There is also an optional link pipe that pairs with the slip-on, adding another boost of power and torque. ■

ontinental’s new ContiSportAttack 3 has a lot to offer your sportbike riding customers and plenty of ways to deliver. This tire is a real performer, designed for extreme grip, great handling and stability in wet or dry conditions.
There’s also a seamless, continuous transition between the two across the entire tread surface. The SportAttack3 has outstanding grip in the wet. Credit that to a new, and specially developed, tread design with significantly improved drainage and water evacuation.
How does it do it? First off, there’s that “GripLimitFeedback Technology,” which is exclusive to Continental. This technology increases the level of safety and rider confidence during extreme lean angles. By giving the rider plenty of early feedback in those critical situations, the SportAttack3 can deal up a higher level of control at the limit.
All of these features combine to make a tire that excels in neutral handling and lean angle performance, and provides a high level of grip.

Continental’s new tire is designed and built to provide your sportbike riding customers extreme grip, stellar handling and great stability in wet or dry conditions.
This latest Continental is a great new offering for the sportbike market. It features newly developed silica Rain Grip compound, MultiGrip Technology and Conti’s TractionSkin. It also is built with 0-degree steel-belted construction, and a specially developed tread design. It’s available now in three front and six rear sizes with applications for most popular sportbike models. Then there’s that Continental MultiGrip Technology. A product of precise temperature-control-curing during the tire’s production, a single compound across the entire tread surface can be softer and more flexible in the shoulder areas for improved grip and still have a harder central tread for straight-up stability and increased wear resistance.

hether it’s a winter track day, an early morning mountain pass or a chilly and wet commute, riding in cold climates and adverse weather conditions places a unique set of stresses on both man and machine. For more than 50 years, Alpinestars has produced footwear, protection and apparel, designed and developed to withstand the toughest conditions. That expertise also extends to base layers, an overlooked yet vital piece of equipment that can make or break a ride, which is why Alpinestars places great importance — and innovation — in them. Providing excellent levels of comfort and interior core temperature regulation, Alpinestars’ Ride Winter Tech series of tops and bottoms features a seamless, tubular construction, which is essential for avoiding irritation and discomfort. A highly ergonomic, body hugging fit is key to the benefits of using the Winter Tech Series under layers. The materials ensure that fit and feel of the outer layers is not compromised and minimizes rider discomfort and possible distraction caused by prolonged drafts or material bunching. Constructed from a technical double-density poly-fabric, the ensemble provides heat retention while also wicking moisture and perspiration away from the body. The Winter Tech garments are anatomically optimized for a close, compression fit for excellent muscle support, which helps reduce fatigue, especially on long energy-sapping rides. The poly-fabric main material is so thin that the top and bottoms fit perfectly under leather racing suits.
BASE LAYERS
Base Layers
Once your customers have their heads, torsos and legs covered, help them finish off their base layer protection with Alpinestars Thermal Tech Socks.
To ramp up the effectiveness of base layer coverage, it is important to address the body’s extremities, especially the feet and head. Alpinestars’ Thermal Tech Socks have been developed to provide warmth and wick away moisture, and are constructed from a Nostatex® fiber material that has excellent anti‐bacterial qualities as well as being odor resistant. The socks have a ribbed design, which reduces material bunching at the heel and ankle, allowing them to fit perfectly under riding boots. The socks are kneelength, ideal for comfort and maximum coverage. For the head, Alpinestars’ Winter Touring Balaclava and Winter Open-Face Balaclava are superb additions to your customers’ winter riding kit bag. Designed to fit unobtrusively under a helmet and to form a waterproof and windproof seal over the jacket (Touring version) or provide neck and shoulder comfort coverage under the jacket (Winter version), these full-face balaclavas feature an open-nose construction for breathing and ventilation. Both versions incorporate flat-lock seams for comfort and ergonomic fit design, and are constructed from poly-fabric for moisture wicking and warmth. Alpinestars’ base layers not only fit seamlessly under outer riding garments but are ergonomically designed to work in conjunction with them, offering performance, second-skin comfort and much-needed weather protection, allowing riders the freedom to enjoy their passion throughout the winter. ■

Arctiva’s Comp Insulated line for women features a waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane. The models come in two colorways.
Outside, Arctiva jackets, bibs and gloves start with a high-denier durable water repellant (DWR) coated polyester outer skin that won’t get stiff in the cold. Minimization of sewn graphics and overlays equals better articulation with fewer wear points, and abrasionresistant reinforcement is provided in critical wear areas.

Sublimated graphics on Arctiva outerwear will not scuff, peel or fade from ultraviolet light, and most feature reflective panels for nighttime safety. Sealed seams and double-layer bib seats keep moisture out, multiple zipper vents allow temperature regulation, and well-placed pockets provide storage. YKK-brand zippers are waterproof and won’t fail on the trail. Inside, all Arctiva insulated gear uses 3M Thinsulate for lightweight warmth without bulk. Details like an interior bib pocket to keep your cell phone warm and operational, a key clip and a shield and goggle wiper complete the jackets. All Arctiva garments are available in sizes up to 3X, with Comp Insulated gear up to 5X in black only. Arctiva’s all-new Vibe shell jacket and shell snow pant feature Sympatex waterproof, windproof, breathable material with a slim fit design and Hi-Vis yellow trim. Superior venting makes this the choice for extreme energy sled and snow bike riders. Arctiva Mech series gear is the warmest in the line. Featuring a waterproof, windproof breathable membrane in the jacket and new full upper bibs, tough Cordura nylon overlays in high wear areas, and a zip-out jacket liner for versatility, the Mech series is available in a choice of attractive graphics with Hi-Vis yellow or reserved gray trim. The Arctiva Eclipse model for women offers the same features as the Mech series, but is tailored for a female figure in a black and pink color scheme. Arctiva’s mainstream Comp Insulated series gear features a waterproof, windproof breathable membrane. Adjustable cuff, collar, bottom hem, and bib inseam allow personal tailoring, and five color choices for men allow matching any contemporary snowmobile model. Women’s models with all the same features are available in two color choices, and youth models come in three bright color selections.
The Arctiva Mech series gear is the warmest in the line.
Arctiva Comp RR shell jackets and bibs also feature a waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane. Ready for the racetrack, they are sized to accommodate protective vests and are available in black/gray or competition-preferred bright orange. Arctiva gloves feature a Hipora waterproof, windproof and breathable liner, and they are available in a range of styles to suit rider tastes and in colors to compliment any Arctiva jacket and bib selection. For feet, Arctiva Evaporator socks and Insulator socks with Merino wool both wick moisture and feature padded shin panels. Arctiva Comp and Mech boots feature removable wicking liners, 3M Thinsulate insulation, speed laces backed up with a micro-adjustable ratchet buckle system to insure proper foot positioning, and tough outsoles for traction and comfort while walking. For under-helmet comfort, Arctiva’s balaclava selection covers everything from a featherweight nylon model to warm Polartech fleece to extreme weather models with facial protection. Arctiva’s dual-lens optically correct anti-fog goggles feature tri-density foam and silicone grip straps for best fit. Adult models also feature a removable nosepiece. ■

Lift More, Maintain Less American-Made Service Lifts
Both lifts retain all the quality engineering you have come to expect from a Handy lift, including heavy-duty domestic steel construction, with a durable powder-coated finish in a choice of red, orange, blue, black, or standard gray work bed over a black-textured frame. Air source required is 90 psi to 120 psi, and all accessories like side extensions and a cycle wheel vise will fit the new lift models. For those hefty UTVs, Handy Industries presents the new Big Utility Lift, or B.U.L. for short. Handy’s heavy hitter, the B.U.L. can handle a whopping 2,500 pounds of off-road utility vehicle. The new Big Utility Lift, or B.U.L., can take on such heavyweights as the Can-Am Maverick four-seater.
Handy’s Standard 1200 air lift now uses a maintenance-free air bellows rather than an air cylinder that requires routine maintenance, and it has an increased lift capacity of 1,200 pounds.

andy Industries introduces three new shop lifts that will make life easier for mechanics in your service shop or in your customer’s garage. Each new Handy vehicle lift provides upgraded weight capacity, and does it with a maintenance-free air bellows instead of an air cylinder that requires routine maintenance. The new Handy Industries Standard 1200 air lift and Standard Air Modified (S.A.M.) 1200 air lift have a lift capacity of 1,200 pounds, which is 200 pounds more than Handy’s popular Standard 1000 and S.A.M. 1000 lifts. There’s also an increased maximum lift height of 9 inches, so the height range is now 8 inches to 39 inches. Work bed dimensions are 80 inches x 24 inches on the Standard 1200, and 84 inches x 24 inches on the S.A.M. 1200 which also includes a rear drop down panel to facilitate motorcycle wheel changes.

Built with all the quality construction features of the new Standard 1200 and S.A.M. 1200 lifts, the B.U.L. also features dual detent bars and four adjustable support arms with anti-skid rubber padding to insure vehicle stability while in the air. There is also a sliding oil pan under the 27-inch x 54-inch bed. The support arms extend to a maximum width of 51-inches. Four sturdy phenolic wheels with serviceable roller bearings protect shop floor surfaces. For storage, the 500-pound B.U.L. folds down to a height of just 9½ inches. All Handy Industries vehicle lifts are manufactured in a new 75,000-square-foot facility in Iowa, and all lifts come with a lifetime limited warranty. ■
