The Cannon Ball Centennial riders are seen on May 4, 2014, between Yuma and Phoenix, Arizona. That is the same road Cannon Ball Baker had ridden that same day exactly 100 years before.
How time flies. On May 3rd, it will be a decade since I and a couple dozen friends took off from San Diego on a coast-to-coast motorcycle ride to New York City. We were commemorating and re-creating the ride that Erwin “Cannon Ball” Baker had undertaken on virtually the same route and on exactly the same days 100 years earlier.
The Cannon Ball Centennial Ride actually took about two years to organize and plan. Starting in 2012, I and my friend and Parts Magazine contributor Joe Colombero began slowly retracing the route that Cannon Ball had taken in 1914. My primary source of information came from a diary that Baker kept during his ride, noting what towns he started at each day, and where he stopped each night.
For the next year and a half, Joe and I would periodically explore those dirt trails and paved roads, noting where roads and highways had been changed and where sections of the old road were no longer usable. We eventually connected a rideable (now mostly paved) route to re-trace Baker’s original journey from downtown San Diego all the way to Manhattan.
With support from Yamaha, Toyota, the Motorcycle Industry Council, Parts Unlimited and Moose Racing, plus manufacturers including Saddlemen, Motion Pro, Icon, Continental Tires and others, I and my band of adventure riders took off for New York on May 3, 2014, exactly 100 years to the day after Baker had. Then, 11½ days later, exactly like Baker, we arrived on Manhattan to conclude our ride. I later wrote and published a book about the experience titled “Finding Cannon Ball’s Trail.”
Since my project in 2014, the motorcycle Adventure Bike market has grown impressively. Today it is a significant market category with every major motorcycle manufacturer, even Harley-Davidson, offering one or more Adventure models.
It’s great to know that many thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts continue to make memories of their own on Adventure bikes. Be sure to check out the Special Adventure section starting on page 20. ■
The 2024 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season has been as thrilling a season as the sport has seen in its more than 50-year history. Of course, Parts Unlimited/THOR is there and in the hunt for every title – 250cc Supercross West, 250cc Supercross East and the 450cc Supercross Championship. Here’s how your top THOR riders have done so far this season.
Cooper Webb #2, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing –Cooper Webb has had a great career and has evolved into one of the smartest racers on any track. Webb already has two 250cc Supercross West Championships, a 250cc Motocross National Championship, and two 450cc Supercross Championships in his legacy.
For 2024 he switched to Yamaha Star Racing where he had so much success as a 250cc rider. The move has paid off, in addition to a handful of podiums, Webb won the Anaheim II Triple Crown. He followed that victory up with more podiums and another win at Arlington, plus a third win at Seattle.
Those victories and podiums add up, and Webb sits solidly at second in the 450cc Supercross points battle, well within striking distance of the Championship.
Aaron Plessinger #7, Red Bull KTM – Plessinger is one of the fan favorites of the sport. He climbs the podium wearing his signature cowboy hat and always gives an enthusiastic, upbeat interview. In 2018 Plessinger won a 250cc West Supercross Championship and the 250cc National Motocross Championship and then moved up to the 450cc class. He struggled for a time in the 450cc class, finishing in the top 10 and making an occasional podium. But he could never quite put it together for an overall Supercross victory until this season.
The race was the San Diego Supercross on a rainy day with a tricky track. Plessinger put in a nearly flawless performance, continued on page 12...
We’ve got the Honda Grom covered with accessories like a groovy freeway bar, a solo rack, a backrest with its optional rack, and a nifty turn-signal relocator. These accessories are available in a gloss black finish only. And to make the bike sound better and perform better we’ve crafted a 50-state legal muffler in black with a rolled tip with either a lollipop red end cap and badge or a bronzed version. All products are made in the USA.

riding like the muddy conditions only made him faster as he took his first 450cc Supercross victory. It was an emotional scene as nearly every 450cc rider stopped just off the track to congratulate the popular Plessinger. Along with the win, Plessinger earned the points lead and wore the red plate for the next two rounds.
Jordon Smith #31, Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing, 250cc Supercross West – Smith came to race in 2024 by starting off the season with a well-earned second place at the season opener of Anaheim. Smith followed that with a victory in San Francisco in tricky, rainy conditions. Along with that victory came the points lead in the Supercross 250cc West and the red plate, then another podium and a couple of top five finishes have him third in the title chase. Smith is a veteran of the 250cc class, and having come close to a title before, he’s going to fight for every point against an all-star field of riders.
Tom Vialle #16, Red Bull KTM – Vialle came to America last year to test himself against the best Supercross riders on earth. He called it a learning season, but he’s a two-time World Motocross Champion and he learns fast.
In 2024 Vialle has figured out how to race Supercross and win. After a crash at Detroit where he was caught up in a massive first turn pile-up, Vialle came back the next round and took third. Next, he garnered his first American Supercross victory on the big track Daytona. He followed that up with another victory at Birmingham and then a second at Indianapolis. As of this writing, he sits just two points out of the lead for the Championship and he’s only getting started.
Haiden Deegan #38 Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing – Haiden Deegan turned Pro in 2023 and lit the motocross world on fire. In his first few races he was already in the top five and then started getting podiums, finishing as the runner-up in the 250cc Supercross East. In the 250cc Pro Motocross Championship he won two events and finished fourth in the series. He was 17 years old.
Then, in the 2023 SuperMotocross World Championship he battled through the play-offs and finals and when it was time to hand out the trophy (and a big check) Haiden Deegan was the 2023 SuperMotocross 250cc World Champion.
He earned his first 250cc Supercross victory at Arlington (ghosting his bike off the jump after the finish as a tribute to his father Brian Deegan). An injury slowed him down at the tough Daytona Supercross; still he soldiered on to a fourth. Deegan podiumed again at Indianapolis, and right now, he sits fourth in points for the 250cc Supercross East Championship with just a handful of races left to go. ■
» Parts Magazine wishes the THOR riders the best as they battle it out the rest of the Supercross season, all of them vying for the ultimate prize.
It’s been a strong start to the 2024 season for Moose Racing-backed off-road riders on both the east and west sides of the country; although there’s still plenty of racing left to run.
If the early rounds of the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series, World Off Road Championship Series (WORCS), National Grand Prix Championship (NGPC), U.S. Sprint Enduro and National Enduro Series are any indication, Moose Racing is out for more titles and No. 1 plates in 2024.
The calendar year got started with the opening round of the WORCS championship where defending Women Pro Champion Kaitlyn Jacobs fired the first shot of the season aboard her FMF RPM KTM, and she hasn’t looked back since. The Moose Racing-backed rider ran off with the win while teammate Tristun Alvarez also began his title defense in the 125 Pro class on the right foot with a win in Taft, California. The following weekend saw the beginning of the NGPC Series and once again the FMF RPM KTM powerhouse team put up some big wins. Moose Racing’s Mason Semmens made his

West Coast debut, the GNCC transplant trying his hand in the Pro II class in Delano, California and coming away with the win.
Semmens went on to take another win at the following NGPC round followed by a runner-up at round three. The young Aussie is equally impressive in the WORCS series, even if he was out to a rough start at the opener. Semmens rebounded with a second-place finish and a win at rounds two and three, and then wowed the crowd at round four with a knock-down dragout for the win. Semmens had to claw his way through the pack from last place, overcome a crash, then battle out a three-way

scrap for the victory. It was a statement win for Semmens who also left round four at Havasu with the WORCS Pro II points lead.
The U.S. Sprint Enduro Series kicked off with Moose Racing’s Brandy Richards laying claim to all 12 special test wins in the Women Pro class aboard her FMF KTM Factory Racing Team Landers. The multi-time WORCS and NGPC champion has now officially relocated to the East Coast where she’s been busy training. The effort is already showing, as Richards has not only continued to dominate Sprint Enduros, but also helped herself to her first-ever GNCC WXC win at round two in Florida.

...continued from page 13
Richards’ Landers KTM teammate Angus Riordan is another Moose Racing athlete already putting his stamp on the 2024 season. Riordan finished second overall at the opening U.S. Sprint Enduro round, claiming the Pro 2 win in the process. The Landers KTMs also saw success at the National Enduro Series opener at the Sumter National where Grant Davis took the Pro 2 win for the team.
The FMF KTM Factory Racing Team Landers carried their momentum into the GNCC season where Riordan took the XC2 250 win at the Big Buck season opener. The XC2 250 Pro podium was an all-Moose-Racing affair with AmPro Yamaha’s Liam Draper second and Davis third. At the following GNCC round, Davis impressed with not only his first XC2 250 Pro win, but second overall at the muddy Wild Boar GNCC in Florida.
Also in the mix is the Coastal GASGAS Factory Racing team, with Ryder Lafferty flying the Moose Racing colors to the overall win at the National Enduro in Sumter, South Carolina. Lafferty was proud to wrestle away a win from the ever-dominant Baylor brothers at the opening round of the series. “I got second place here the last two years,” Lafferty said. “I wanted to make sure I came in and take a win away from the Baylors.”
Lafferty’s teammate Jordan Ashburn has had a taste of the overall podium in the GNCC Series, claiming third at The General GNCC. After four rounds, Ashburn sits third in the championship and poised for a competitive run in the remaining nine rounds ■

Parts Unlimited/Ducati rider Josh Herrin waited 13 years to win his second Daytona 200 last year, but he only had to wait 364 days to win his third on a sunny Saturday afternoon in March at Daytona International Speedway.
Herrin became the sixth three-time winner of the Daytona 200 with the Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati rider joining Dick Klamfoth, Brad Andres, Roger Reiman, Kenny Roberts and Mat Mladin as those with a trio of victories.
The 82nd running of the Daytona 200 featured the drama and luck, both good and bad, that is a mainstay of a 200mile race that features two pit stops and 57 laps.
For all practical purposes the race was won during the first of two pit stops on the 17th lap when Herrin and Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Richie Escalante pitted for fuel and tires at the same time. When they both rejoined the race, they were no longer close and once the pit stops cycled through, Herrin was in a lead he wouldn’t relinquish.
Escalante didn’t give up and he got to within five seconds of Herrin after the second pit stop, but he would run out
of laps in his pursuit and then he simply ran out of gas. His misfortune moved his teammate and pole sitter Tyler Scott to second, 45.660 seconds behind Herrin. It also propelled Vesrah Racing’s Hayden Gillim to third, for his first career Daytona 200 podium in his third attempt. It was 18-year-old Scott’s first podium in the “Great American Motorcycle Race.” ■

Loading up for an off-road adventure just got easier. Nelson-Rigg has expanded its Rigg Gear Adventure line with three new 100 percent waterproof Hurricane luggage options. The 60-liter duffel bag and two new Tail bags in 12-liter Dual Sport and 28-liter Adventure sizes give riders even more options for hauling things along on any kind of adventure.
The 60-liter Hurricane dry duffel bag is the new and largest addition in the Hurricane duffel lineup. Its size and shape make it a great place to stash items that don’t typically fit inside traditional motorcycle luggage. It is made from the same materials and methods as the tail bags and features a roll-top closure, so it is absolutely waterproof.
The Hurricane duffel bag series also includes 25-liter and 40-liter options, all featuring Nelson-Rigg’s patented Rigg-Strap mounting system. This secure mounting system makes packing easy, and it allows the bag to mount along or across the seat or the tail section. The versatile Hurricane duffel bags not only mount to a motorcycle, but also to ATV/ UTVs, PWCs or snowmobiles. The base has a non-slip design for stability, and the carry straps double as compression straps to keep everything neatly cinched down.
For over five years the Trails End Textile Tail Bags have been rider favorites in the Rigg Gear line. Since the release of the Hurricane collection, Nelson-Rigg received many customer requests for the same style bags, only from a waterproof material. After rigorous R&D, the solution has come in these Dual Sport and Adventure Hurricane Tail Bags.
Like all other gear in the Hurricane collection, these bags are made from heavy-duty UV-treated PVC tarpaulin material with electronically heat-welded seams to make them completely waterproof. Whether a rider is braving water crossings, mud or even just a rainy day, items packed inside these tail bags will stay secure and dry.
The Dual Sport tail bag offers 12 liters of storage, a great fit on enduro and dual sport motorcycles. The larger Adventure tail bag has 28 liters of space; roomy enough to accommodate most full-face helmets. Both tail bags have a rigid construction to hold their shape when empty, reflective piping, a top MOLLE panel, rubberized carry handles and internal straps to keep items in place. Mounting is easy using the attached web strapping and tension-lock buckles.
The large Adventure tail bag has 28 liters of space, roomy enough to accommodate most full-face helmets.
Like all Nelson-Rigg brands of luggage, the Hurricane collection comes with Nelson-Rigg’s Lifetime Warranty.
In addition to the new tail and duffel bags, the complete Hurricane line of waterproof luggage includes: RiggPack/ crash-bar tail bag, Dual Sport saddlebags, 10-liter roll bag, 2 tail bags in 12-liter and 28-liter sizes, 30-liter backpack tail bag and Hurricane saddlebags.
The Hurricane saddlebags are easier than ever to mount to saddlebag supports using the new Quick Release Saddlebag Plates. ■

Getting a set of soft saddlebags on and off a motorcycle shouldn’t be complicated or time-consuming. Now, with the new Rigg Gear Quick Release Saddlebag Plates from Nelson-Rigg, the process takes only seconds.
These saddlebag plates fit most OEM and aftermarket 18mm round-bar pannier racks, and the “quick release” part of their name is no joke. The plates keep a set of soft saddlebags firmly in place during riding, but when it’s time for them to come off, a simple “pull-and-lift” motion is all it takes. Putting the saddlebags on the motorcycle is equally easy, with a quick “set-and-click” that latches them into place. The release latch on the plates has a locking hole that can accommodate a third-party luggage or gun safe lock.
Both the saddlebag plates and the mounting hardware are made from aircraft-grade aluminum that has been powder coated and anodized for ultimate durability.
When
These plates are incredibly versatile. The top latch and the mounting feet are adjustable to fit many different rack configurations. There are two optional accessories for the saddlebag plates (sold separately) – a latch extension that fits most models with offset pannier racks, like the BMW GS and Yamaha Tenere, and a 20mm latch that can fit racks of up to 20mm in diameter. Thanks to these two small additional accessories, there are even more fitment options for the saddlebag plates. Pre-drilled holes will allow a RotopaX container to be mounted to the plates, too.
The team at Nelson-Rigg designed the quick release saddlebag plates to fit a wide range of soft saddlebags; leading that list are Nelson-Rigg’s two styles of waterproof bags. The Hurricane and Sierra Saddlebag sets both have
approximately 28L of storage per bag, removable plastic gussets that allow the bags to hold shape when empty and included saddlebag liners for ease of packing. You can read more about the Hurricane collection on Page 22.
Once the quick release saddlebag plates have been mounted, it’s easy to snap a set of Hurricane saddlebags into place. These saddlebags, like all Hurricane luggage, are made from heavy-duty UV-treated PVC tarpaulin material. That material coupled with electronically heat-welded seams results in luggage that is 100 percent waterproof. Nelson-Rigg’s Sierra saddlebags are also completely waterproof, and can be mounted to the quick release saddlebag plates by simply adding the Sierra Saddlebag Strap Kit (also sold separately).
Nelson-Rigg’s Rigg Gear line is designed for Adventure and dual-sport riding. This means everything from their luggage to the quick release saddlebag plates is designed to be tough enough for the terrain the bike will encounter, and for wherever the journey takes you. Like all Nelson-Rigg luggage, these items carry Nelson-Rigg’s Lifetime Warranty. ■

When your day-to-day life revolves around the ride, it is important to remove all limitations. Whether for commuting or pure adventure, our all-new Range collection has been built from the pegs up to ensure that your ride continues beyond the expected, year-round.
Escaping the day-to-day grind and entering day-to-day adventure opens up a world of possibilities for dual-sport and Adventure riders. Of all the obstacles open range riding may serve, THOR believes gear should not be one of them. The Result? THOR’s 2024 lines of Range and Terrain gear are designed and built for the adventure ahead.
With the constantly growing and evolving Adventure Segment comes constantly evolving needs for rider equipment. Dubbed the Range line, THOR has built a complete collection of Adventure-ready gear from the pegs up, consisting of pants, jerseys, jackets and gloves. With this line, THOR wants to ensure the ride delivers beyond expectations, year-round. The Range line is designed and built to be versatile, durable and comfortable, whether riders are commuting or exploring new places.
Range pants and jerseys are designed to deliver the protection and functionality needed for high-mileage adventures while maintaining comfort and durability. THOR’s proprietary Dura-Motion fabric is used throughout the Range pants’ construction, providing simultaneous flexibility and durability. These pants are cut for an overthe-boot fit, but feature adjustments at the calf and the ankle so riders can remove any unwanted bagginess.
Critical for the unpredictable nature of adventure riding, Range pants are built for extreme weather on both ends of the spectrum. Taped seams, waterproof zippers and a DWR coating help protect riders and their belongings from wet elements, while ventilation allows for cooling airflow when needed.
Riders will enjoy the same flexibility, durability and comfort in Range jerseys, featuring vented side panels to promote air flow, moisture-wicking, and four-way stretch fabric and abrasion resistant sleeves that are all ready for miles of adventure.
Comfort and durability are important, but protection is especially crucial on high mile rides in remote locations. Thankfully, THOR has called on the protective science of D3O® impact protection and implemented it into Range pants and jackets, providing extra layers of absorption in commonly impacted areas. Even in a simple tip-over situation, D3O will work its magic and mitigate the force transferred to the rider.
Overall, Range jackets are the product of careful consideration of Adventure riders’ needs, including vented shoulder pads, elbow pads, and a Viper Pro back pad all included. The D3O pads each have a dedicated internal pocket for easy removal when desired.
Much like Range pants, Range jackets’ design and construction also boasts waterproof features and maneuverability enhancing technology, including THOR’s Dura-Motion fabric. Plus, riders can stow their belongings in sleekly integrated, high-volume pockets.
Wrapping up the Range ensemble are sturdy, protective gloves that provide reduced fatigue and improved knuckle and palm protection. Riders can still use their phone with Range gloves, plus, they have a built-in goggle and shield squeegee!
The Range line is a complete package for the extreme demands of unpredictable Adventure rides, but for riders putting in miles on their dual-sport machines without the need for maximum gear, THOR’s Terrain line fits right into that happy medium.
Terrain off-road gear is as rugged as it is versatile. Tested and developed with their elite off-road team, each piece from the Terrain collection is purpose built to take on the elements while providing durable performance.
A staple for any dual-sport rider, the Terrain off-road jacket provides both riding comfort and functionality, no matter the conditions. They feature rip-stop, abrasion resistant materials with THOR’s Dura-Motion paneling for improved flexibility. Additionally, water resistant zippers and fabric coatings keep things dry while zippered intake and exhaust vents and zip-off sleeves are prepared for warm weather. Convenience is maximized for riders as the jacket easily packs into a belt for storage while riding, if needed. Constructed of the same abrasion resistant and comfortable materials, Terrain pants ensure riding comfort and fit is optimized with a side-cinch waist adjustment system and double-lock front closure system. The key feature of Terrain pants, however, is the option for over-the-boot or in-the-boot style. This differentiator helps cover a wider
The Terrain off-road gear from THOR is a great choice for dual-sport riders. It’s designed for flexibility, weather protection and comfort. The pants come in over-the-boot and in-the-boot styles.
range of riders’ needs and styles, whether they’re leaning more toward ADV or off-road moto.
Terrain jerseys may appear sleek and simple, yet they’re packed with functionality much like the rest of THOR’s off-road gear. Equipped with moisture wicking material, reflective graphics, ventilation, four-way stretch and more, Terrain jerseys check all the boxes for off-road riders.
What would a gear set be without gloves? Terrain gloves are designed with enhanced protection over motocross gloves, but aren’t quite as robust as the Range gloves. Reinforced knuckles and backhand panels help improve durability and protection on the trail while the overall design and materials promote long-ride comfort.
No matter if it’s thousands of miles across several days, or a few dozen miles with riding buddies, THOR’s selection of off-road tailored gear leaves no stone unturned for fit, function and protection. ■

The task of developing tires is a nonstop process for Mitas. With tires available across all segments of powersports, the company is always working on the next generation of tires. Of the many offerings available from Mitas, off-road and Adventure tires are helping lead the way in North America. And they’re now available through Parts Unlimited.
Mitas has a long history in powersports that dates back to 1905. Its European roots are a combination of brands acquired over the years, including familiar names like Trelleborg and Savatech. Since Mitas focused on OEM rebranding for much of its history, there are still plenty of riders who aren’t familiar with the name. Now, with a focus on the North American market and significant growth in its production, the team at Mitas is hoping to change that.
The growing number of Mitas tires being chosen as OEM motorcycle fitments in North America and abroad speaks volumes about the high quality of Mitas tires, which are all developed and manufactured in-house. That process recently became much easier thanks to their new, state-of-the-art facility that has greatly improved output capacity. The R&D department has gotten a boost, as well, to help keep up with growing demand.
When the new production facility opened, it seemed like the perfect time to do a bit of revamping in other areas, as well. That included the naming of the tires. Dealers who are used to the old Mitas naming system will appreciate the logical and structured naming conventions, making it easier than ever to help customers choose the right tires.
Mitas’ Enduro Trail+ are just one offering in the company’s range of Adventure tires. They offer great on-road performance, and great traction and stability off-road.
In the off-road division, the Terra Force-MX tires are standard motocross tires, while the Terra Force-EX lineup serves the enduro segment. Hard Enduro competitors will recognize the shorter knob and wider footprint of the FIM-legal Terra Force-EF. Adventure options include tires like the Enduro Trail and Enduro Trail+.
In addition to the updated naming, Mitas also has a stripe system to help easily identify a tire’s variants. For example, a Terra Force-EX tire with a yellow stripe will have a stiff carcass and a durable compound suitable for high-speed and dual-sport riding as well as desert terrain.
A green stripe, meanwhile, indicates a flexible carcass and a long-wearing compound that resists chunking. Soft but incredibly durable, a Terra Force-EX with a green stripe is a great choice for enduro riders. A double green stripe means the tire has an even softer gummy compound, and enduro riders can expect the tire to maximize traction with good tire life.
Customers looking for a 50/50 Adventure and dual-sport tire should check out the Enduro Trail from Mitas. Its tread is designed for optimum off-way performance, while providing great road manners.
Customers can mix and match those variants to get just the right setup.
Another new development from Mitas is that its competition off-road tire offerings – with the exception of the MX range and certain gummy tires – are DOT certified. The unique opportunity of a new production facility allowed Mitas to homologate as many tires as possible, so riders have a competition tire that can be used on an everyday dual-sport bike. ■

Akrapovič’s new Slip-On Line (Titanium) exhaust for the BMW R 1300 GS is a lightweight exhaust upgrade for BMW’s new flagship Adventure bike. Customers can expect a nice boost in aesthetics, as well as performance gains for both horsepower and torque.
When riders are wondering where to start with swapping out parts on a stock bike, the exhaust is always a good first step because it’s one change that makes a big impact. Aftermarket slip-on exhausts can make a significant difference in a bike’s performance, sound and looks. Now, Akrapovič brings its signature blend of craftsmanship and power gains to the BMW R 1300 GS with the new Slip-On Line (Titanium) *(EMIS Code 3).
The Slip-On Line (Titanium) offers customers plug-and-play installation, with no remapping required. It’s available in a titanium and a black finish.
This new slip-on exhaust was developed specifically for the R 1300 GS, but it is far from the first time the team at Akrapovič has engineered an exhaust dedicated to the BMW GS range. Akrapovič’s first GS-specific exhaust system was developed for the 1999 BMW R 1150 GS. The company has been engineering GS exhausts since then, giving Akrapovič decades of experience working on the GS and BMW boxer engine platform.
The Slip-On Line (Titanium) exhaust for the BMW R 1300 GS features a double-flow muffler. The lightweight titanium construction is paired with a handmade carbon fiber endcap, and the entire setup results in a welcome weight savings compared to the stock exhaust. It’s worth noting that Akrapovič has an in-house materials laboratory, so the company can ensure outstanding quality and consistency with its titanium components.
Performance is always a top priority for Akrapovič, and this new exhaust for the BMW R 1300 GS is no exception. The team at Akrapovič tested the Slip-On Line (Titanium) exhaust on the company’s in-house Dyno. In side-by-side comparisons with the stock exhaust, the Slip-On Line (Titanium) was found to improve both power and torque, including a 1.9-horsepower boost at 7,600 rpm.
Akrapovič exhausts are also known for their deep, full sounds. This new exhaust has enhanced sound silencing, so it delivers that iconic sound without being overwhelmingly loud.
Getting these gains in performance and style is a simple plug-and-play process, with no remapping required. And, as expected, the exhaust is compatible with BMW side cases, so there’s no need to move anything around. ■

Since the brand’s inception, the team at ICON has delighted in surprising everyone. Sometimes it’s a wild graphic, and other times, it’s a design that looks completely unlike anything ICON has come up with before. This time around, it’s the Elsinore helmet that’s going to have people talking.
The brand-new Elsinore helmet has a 1970s motocross kind of vibe, right down to the visor that provides some shade up top. But what really sets this helmet apart is that it’s the first one from ICON to feature a removable modular face mask.
The Fog-Free MXShield – which evokes the shape of MX goggles more than a traditional street face shield – is inte grated with the modular face mask, so the whole thing can operate as one unit. The shield itself has zero distortion for a clear view of the road ahead, and the face mask has ample air intakes for plenty of airflow and a big dose of style.
The FRP shell of the Elsinore helmet is designed to offer optimal strength with minimal weight for a comfortable ride. In total, there are eight air intakes and two exhaust ports, so air flows easily through the EPS foam.
ICON has three different shell and EPS liner sizes for the Elsinore, which is available from XS to 3XL. Currently, there are four solid-color options, including the Monotype, which is an eye-catching shade of red. The solid colors still have a dynamic look thanks to the 3D texture on the shell and visor. Soon, the Elsinore will be offered in several graphics, too.
Inside the Elsinore helmet, there’s a new colorway for the Hydradry moisture-wicking liner. It’s a new color but the same function, with removable pads that can be washed to keep things looking and feeling fresh.
The Elsinore helmet comes with built-in channels for ICON’s HelmLink communicator. ICON worked with SENA Communications to develop the Bluetooth communicator system, which allows up to 20 riders to connect. The side plates and rear neckroll of the Elsinore can easily be replaced with the HelmLink system, so it fits right in with the lines of the helmet. ■
» Talk to your Parts rep for more details about the new Elsinore helmet from ICON. Explore all the options for it in the ICON Spring catalog, and at www.parts-unlimited.com.
Both the face mask and the visor can be swapped out; each pop off easily for those who want to transform the look of the Elsinore helmet. ICON even has side plates, so a rider can remove the visor and add the plates to have a more traditional street helmet look.
In addition to being removable, the face mask and MXShield pop up like a modular helmet. That added convenience means things like a quick drink or a chat with someone don’t require the helmet to be removed entirely.
Customers can remove the Elsinore’s face mask to change the look of the helmet, or simply flip it as one would with a modular helmet. It’s a striking addition to the ICON lineup.
When the BMW R80 GS debuted in 1980, it rolled off the line with Metzeler’s first Adventure tire. That relationship is still going strong more than 40 years later. Today, the BMW R 1300 GS uses the Metzeler Tourance Next II tires as OE, with the Metzeler Karoo 4 available as an alternative fitment upon request for off-road use.
The Tourance Next II tire is an outstanding SportTouring choice for the road, with features that make it a stable choice on everything from highways to dirt roads. Meanwhile, the Karoo 4 is a true 50/50 tire that offers Adventure riders the best of both worlds.
Metzeler designed the Tourance Next II tire to handle everything from a short adventure to a bike that is fully loaded for an epic trip. The dual-compound rear tire, which includes a high-silica compound in the center stripe, provides stability and consistent performance.
The tire features Metzeler’s INTERACT technology, which results in improved feedback for the rider and predictable performance while at lean. DYMATEC, or Dynamic Mould Angle Technology, means the tire design features variable groove wall angles at different lean angles. The result is the right amount of tread resistance as well as uniform wear.
The Tourance Next II is a high achiever in wet conditions, including under braking. This wet-weather prowess comes from steep grooves that efficiently evacuate water, as well as Metzeler Hyperbase construction and compounds that improve performance in cold temperatures.
Like the Tourance Next II, the Karoo 4 tire is packed with technology such as INTERACT and DYMATEC. The Karoo
The Tourance Next II tire from Metzeler is an outstanding SportTouring choice for the road, with features that make it a stable choice for everything from highways to dirt roads.
4 deftly balances off-road and on-road performance to deliver a true 50/50 tire option for Adventure riders.
For off-road riding, scoop-shaped blocks are effective on softer surfaces, like sandy terrains. Meanwhile, the knob layout and shaping offer stability on hard pack as well as lateral self-cleaning when conditions get muddy.
The carcass of the Karoo 4 tire is stiffer for stable on-road riding, and multi-radius profiles assist with both straight-line riding as well as grip through the corners. The dual-compound rear tire boosts longevity for miles of confidence.
Metzeler’s Karoo 4 is a true 50/50 tire that offers Adventure riders the best of both worlds. It balances off-road and on-road performance, and has improved resistance to abrasion, cutting and tearing.
The Karoo 4 also must be tough enough for anything it might encounter off-road. The team at Metzeler engineered a new rubber formulation for the Karoo 4 which has improved resistance to abrasion, cutting and tearing. Whether it’s putting on the miles on a paved road or tackling challenging terrain off-road, the Karoo 4 tire is made to go the distance.
Recently, BMW really put that to the test by sending four riders to scale the world’s tallest active volcano on Karoo 4-equipped BMW R 1300 GS bikes. The riders started at the base of South America’s Nevado Ojos del Salado and climbed nearly 20,000 feet in less than 20 hours. ■

Changing conditions is one of the things that makes Adventure Touring so exciting.
Cprotectors in place. With the sleeves removed, riders get to feel the airflow without sacrificing coverage.
There are also impact protectors in the shoulders. Alpinestars uses Nucleon Flex Pro CE Level 2 certified armor for the Halo Drystar jacket since it is extremely thin, lightweight and breathable.
hanging conditions is one of the things that makes Adventure Touring so exciting. On-road to off-road, different terrain and weather fluctuations as the miles add up keep things interesting, but it also means gear must be able to adjust to the changes. Alpinestars rises to the challenge with the Halo Drystar Adventure Touring jacket and pant.
The Halo Drystar jacket is designed to be a true multiseason jacket. It works on or off the road, in hot or cool weather and it even stands up to the rain. Thanks to the incredible versatility of this jacket, it can transform as quickly as the riding conditions.
One glance at the Halo Drystar jacket shows that it’s a different approach to gear design because the entire upper chest can be unzipped to create a large ventilation panel. When combined with the large vent panel on the back of the jacket, there is plenty of airflow on those warmer days.
The sleeves can zip off, too, but that doesn’t mean the rider needs to worry about exposed arms. There are mesh sleeves underneath, which keep the elbow and forearm impact
The Halo Drystar jacket doesn’t stop there with defense. Key areas are reinforced for added durability, and the jacket is Tech-Air Ready, meaning it can pair seamlessly with the innovative upper body airbag system from Alpinestars.
When weather turns wet, the included Drystar rain jacket can be added to make the Halo Drystar waterproof. The rain jacket is a versatile option that can be worn over the Halo Drystar or zipped in to serve as an inner layer. It can also be worn by itself. And, when it’s not in use, the Drystar rain jacket is slim enough to be stowed in one of the Halo’s large cargo pockets.
Riders can complete the look with the Halo Drystar Adventure pant. Like the jacket, the pant is an extremely versatile option that can be adjusted to match the riding conditions.
There are fully foldable ventilation panels for airflow, and the packable, waterproof Drystar liner can be added. The liner can go over or inside the pants, and since it’s breathable, a rider can stay warm and dry without giving up comfort.
The Nucleon Flex Pro knee armor guards against impacts, while adjustment points and stretch panels keep things fitting just right. The cargo pockets are a great way to securely stow smaller items. ■

Joining the Parts Unlimited family in 2024 is USWE Sports, maker of hydration packs for motorcycle riders. When it comes to keeping your customers hydrated out on the ride, you’ll find a generous assortment of trail-tested solutions from USWE.
Sweden-based company USWE (pronounced “you-swee”) is famous for its “No Dancing Monkey” technology – creating bounce-free action backpacks for motorcycle riders that stay secure while riding. The award-winning four-point suspension design features a single-closure point in the front, and the adjustable straps with integrated elastic allow the pack to remain snug and lightweight so your customers can breathe, move and more importantly, ride hard through gnarly terrain without the pack bouncing around.
The company has its roots in off-road riding, as the team be hind USWE grew up riding in the Swedish countryside. In 2007, they set out to design a better solution for the overstuffed backpacks that bounced around and caused them backaches. Today, USWE offers packs for biking, running, skiing and more, but its Moto Hydro Collection, developed specifically for motorcycling, is among its best sellers.
“Most hydration packs are designed for hiking, and that’s fine,” says USWE’s Jason McCune. “Our packs are designed for the fast-paced person/rider in mind. Our No Dancing Monkey (NDM) 1.2 harness system keeps the pack from moving around on your body. It almost becomes part of you. It’s tight to your torso, but still allows the freedom of movement.”
USWE’s Moto Hydro line
Adventure Fit comes in a variety of sizes, including a 12L storage size. It features a harness system designed to fit Adventure riders who wear body armor and/or protective riding jackets.
USWE’s most recent addition to the Moto Hydro line is the Adventure Fit option. This harness system is specifically designed to fit dual-sport and Adventure motorcycle riders who wear body armor and/or protective riding jackets. Distinct from the optional XXL extension harness, designed for larger riders wearing jerseys and light outerwear, the Adventure Fit retains the benefits and features of the original, but expands the range to as much as eight inches (20cm) to accommodate more layers of apparel.
The Moto Hydro hydration packs come in 3L, 4L, 8L and 12L storage sizes, each featuring uniquely tailored packable volumes for different needs and situations. They start from the super lightweight 3L hydration pack equipped with a 2.0L (70 oz) Elite hydration bladder, and go to the larger packs which deliver more hydration (up to 3.0L/100 oz hydration bladder) and more room for storage of tools, food, layers and equipment. Then choose between the standard Race Fit or the Adventure Fit to find the ideal action backpack for every size and style. ■

The XRE series chains are the successor to RK’s XSO chains, and are designed to be used both on the street and off-road. This feature makes XRE ideal for Adventure and dual-sport bikes that traverse various terrains.
RK Chain goes racing so that riders can enjoy tomorrow’s chain technology today. What RK’s R&D learns on the racetrack through testing and perfecting results in products that ultimately find their way to dealer showroom floors worldwide.
One of the world’s most grueling races, the 2024 Dakar Rally, took place in January and progressed for two weeks throughout Saudi Arabia. During those two weeks, rider and machine traversed 4,767 miles in various extreme elements. Products must be able to perform in this extreme race without fail.
RK Chain sponsored team BAS World KTM Race Team, equipped with RK’s new XRE series chain, completed the race with one chain change for each bike. The “E” in XRE stands for Endurance and proves that XRE series chains are ideal where long distances and consistent high speeds continue throughout a 24-hour period.
RK’s XRE chains were also used by Yamalube YART Yamaha as the team conquered the FIM WEC World Endurance Championship for the 2023 season.
Compared to the XSO line, XRE series chains feature a 20 percent longer wear-life. XRE chains include XW-Sealing rings which provide two lubrication pools that help protect against high-speed abrasion, and prevent dirt and debris from penetrating the inner rollers/bushings of the chain.
XRE series chains are available in 520, 525 or 530 pitch. XW-Ring chains offer great high-speed, extreme heat performance, and are designed for a variety of environments from the street to off-road. XRE chains are a perfect balance between high tensile strength and light weight while maximizing chain wear-life.
Today’s Adventure riders are exploring the world like never before, and modern motorcycles are taking riders farther into more rugged and technical environments. RK Chains are designed to provide exceptional performance for all Adventure and enduro riders through a variety of extreme environments. From asphalt, mud and sand to salt flats, rocks and snow – RK Chain can get Adventure riders there and back again.
All sealed chains require routine cleaning and maintenance to perform as designed. RK recommends service techs use a cleaner specific to motorcycle chains and is designed to be used on sealed chains. For sealed chains used on the street, clean and lubricate the chain every 300 miles. Non-sealed chains used on the street should be cleaned and lubricated every 200 miles.
For off-road use chains should be inspected, cleaned and lubricated after every ride. Do not use brake cleaner, engine cleaner, kerosene, or any cleaner that contains acid or caustic chemicals. These harsh ingredients can damage the chain’s seals, reducing the performance and wear life of the chain and will void the chain’s warranty. ■

After two weeks of 4,767 grueling miles throughout Saudi Arabia in the Dakar Rally and traversing many environmental elements, XRE series chains provided the ultimate lightweight and endurance performance in a variety of riding conditions from one extreme element to the next.
Bradley Cox BAS World KTM Race TeamAMaxima’s ProPlus+ highperformance engine oil delivers with a full-synthetic, ester-fortified formula that optimizesengine performance and clutch feel.
dventure and dual-sport riders love to explore new lands and experience different terrain. Their bikes are adaptable, and they need their lubricants and chemicals to be versatile too. Maxima engineers its products to perform in a wide range of scenarios, and the Southern California-based company was able to affirm that during a recent trip to New Zealand’s North Island to attend the Adventure Rallye. There, products like ProPlus+ engine oil, SC1 protectant, and Chain Wax chain lube were put to the test during five days and nearly 1,000 miles of epic riding.
Great adventures require solid engine protection, and Maxima’s ProPlus+ high-performance engine oil delivers with a full-synthetic, ester-fortified formula that optimizes engine performance and clutch feel.
From small-bore thumpers to big-bore twins, ProPlus+ maintains oil viscosity and film thickness thanks to extremely stable chemistry. Maxima’s proprietary additive system and synthetic base oils combine to minimize oxidation and wear. ProPlus+ is also designed to aggressively attach to engine surfaces to keep internal parts clean. It’s exactly the kind of performance lubricant that high-performance engines need when roosting across beaches, slogging through mud, and ripping along trails like the attendees got to do in New Zealand.
Exploring three coasts of the North Island, riders encountered everything from salty beach sand to sticky mud, but none of it was a match for Maxima’s SC1 High
Adventure riders often hit conditions that can quickly turn their bikes into a grungy mess. SC1 High Gloss Coating helps keep debris from accumulating on areas prone to getting dirty or muddy.
Gloss Coating. The original “New Bike in A Can,” SC1 is great for mud protection, and was a popular product for Rallye attendees. After all, it’s easy to apply and incredibly effective. Spray SC1 on the underside of the fenders and skid plate, on the shock and swingarm, and anywhere you don’t want mud or dirt to accumulate. SC1 protects and shines plastic, vinyl, rubber and carbon fiber, and creates a durable coating that repels mud, dirt and debris.
Part of the appeal of riding in New Zealand is the amazing variety of terrain and environments. The Rallye included rain-soaked forests, dry gravel roads and native bush tracks, and throughout it all, Maxima’s Chain Wax kept chain links lubed and protected. Chain Wax forms a long-lasting film that protects in both dry and wet environments, making it a perfect match for terrain as varied as that in New Zealand.
Chain Wax’s unique ParaFilm formula penetrates deeply, eliminating fling-off and ensuring an effective seal between the chain and the elements. In addition to the durable and protective paraffin film, Maxima Chain Wax is fortified with world-class additives that eliminate corrosion while minimizing chain wear.
Like the New Zealand KTM Adventure Rallye, Maxima Racing Oil’s products are designed to impress. Your customers can get the same engine protection, mud defense, and chain care here at home with the Maxima products you know and trust. ■

GILLES Tooling out of Luxembourg has ventured across the pond and has joined the Parts Unlimited catalog. The company, founded by former motorcycle racer Gerhard Gilles, is putting boots on the ground in the states with its all-new innovative TECH-X Enduro footpegs, bringing new dimensions of foot control to Adventure motorcycling.
The novel design of the TECH-X Enduro footpeg is the rubber mounting system that allows the footpeg to slightly articulate with the rider’s foot movements. The base attaches to the stock mounting point of the motorcycle while the footpeg itself is mounted to the base by a rubber element. This enables the TECH-X design to absorb vibration as well as tilt in multiple directions.
The TECH-X footpegs dynamically adapt to the rider’s weight shift by being able to move forward or backward, accompanied by an intelligent damping system. The unique serrated structure ensures reliable slip protection and allows unrestricted concentration on the road.
The truly unique aspect of the TECH-X Enduro footpeg is the use of the elastomeric damper. GILLES Tooling Sales Manager Ralf Kahllenberger described the development process, and the exciting moment of finally identifying the ideal rubber compound for the elastomers with the right amount of movement.
“This was an interesting process for our R&D team and it was pretty special when we found the right inserts that allowed the movement of the peg we were looking for,” Ralf explained. “The last part of the decision is always the final design in terms of colors, engravings and milling. For the TECH-X Enduro footpeg we gave them a twocolor scheme with a black body and silver edges. They look very impressive.”
Since the founding of GILLES Tooling over 20 years ago, the company has remained focused on its goal of creating ergonomically based technical solutions for motorcycles, and has grown to become an official supplier to major motorcycle manufacturers including BMW Motorrad, Indian Motorcycle, KTM, Suzuki, and Yamaha. All GILLES products are designed and developed in-house by the engineering staff. From the drawing board to prototypes to testing, GILLES prides itself on passionate craftsmanship that is “Driven By Function.”
“Our partnerships with leading motorcycle manufacturers reflect our unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation,” said GILLES Marketing Manager Lukas Wegner. “We are dedicated to enhancing the riding experience for enthusiasts globally.” ■

For more than 70 years and three generations, Arai has accumulated protection gains in its helmets, one-by-one, and step-by-step, for fellow riders. These efforts may not be visible, but together they all contribute to a sum that is greater than the whole. These efforts have costs, and the knowhow and experience of Arai comes from the company’s priority for protection. No matter the economic conditions, Arai is committed to its priority for protection, and will never give up gains in protection to add features just for sales. The XD-5 is the direct result of Arai’s commitment to rider protection and is a whole new helmet.
The XD-5 helmet is designed for Adventure riding and Sport Touring, and it boasts significant changes over the XD-4. Arai continues to hone its “Glancing Off” approach to helmet design. The shell of the XD-5 is rounder, which helps impact energy “glance off” the helmet in a crash. By directing energy away from the inside of the helmet, the amount of energy it must absorb is reduced.
The VAS-A shield system further contributes to this round design, and the entire shield assembly has been lowered to smooth out the helmet even more. Additionally, the face shield maintains a smooth curvature around the shell of the XD-5. To achieve this, the shield has a shape that is not constant from ear to ear – a challenge to mold compared to a face shield with a constant radius. However, the extra effort is worth it for the added glancing-off ability of the XD-5.
Arai’s XD-5 helmet is designed for Adventure riding and Sport Touring, and it boasts a number of features that make it a versatile helmet for many different riding conditions. It also offers riders Arai’s noted protection and comfort.
A handy graphic that showcases the XD-5’s versatility. Your customers can switch things up by removing the peak or the windshield. Add a set of goggles and it’s a great off-road helmet.
The VAS-A shield system still provides a wide field of view, and swapping shields on the XD-5 is faster and easier than ever.
Arai also added a Super Fiber belt to reinforce the helmet including the forehead area, and Arai describes this belt as similar to the way steel bands strengthen a barrel. Even with this added layer of defense, the shell remains lightweight thanks to the careful selection of materials used to handcraft it.
Underneath the shell is Arai’s proprietary one-piece, multidensity EPS liner. The liner is designed for optimal density in each area, but it maintains a consistent thickness. This approach further improves Arai’s glancing-off design.
Ventilation in the XD-5 includes a mouth shutter with an opening in the shell that is double the size of the one on the XD-4. Up top, the new peak design for the XD-5 has more effective ventilation and improved resistance to buffeting. It also has more adjustability so a rider can set it to their preferred angle for sun blocking. The spoiler at the back of the XD-5 helps reduce turbulent air for a more comfortable ride.
Removable foam layers in the interior liner enable precise fitting, and a retractable air flap on the chin reduces wind intrusion. The sides of the shell are sculpted to easily accept communication devices. ■

With Harley-Davidson’s Pan America motorcycle, the Motor Company established itself as a contender in the Adventure bike market. It’s a bike built for logging serious miles both onroad and off, which means it faces the possibility of some harsh conditions while out exploring.
For your Pan America customers, Dynojet has put its wellknown name behind a host of accessories engineered and manufactured to deliver maximum protection. These products are made to protect a range of the bike’s components regardless of what the trail or road has in store.
Specifically designed for durability in the event of a crash, the Dynojet foldable shift lever ensures your customers are riding home and not taking a long walk in the woods past their bedtimes. That’s never a fun way to end the ride.
The ignition coil guard offers robust protection and prom ises to keep the spark alive on that Pan America should the road-less-traveled also include a date with the dirt. The Pan America billet ignition coil guard is crafted out of 60/61 aluminum, so your customers can rest assure it’s tough.
Dynojet’s new radiator guard for the HarleyDavidson Pan America is build tough, and designed to protect against rocks, sticks and other debris while out on the trail.
Dynojet created its radiator guard for the Pan America to do just that – guard the radiator. The company’s development team then put that guard through the wringer, making sure it protects against the sticks, stones, roost and debris common to any off-road ride. It did so and kept operating temperatures within spec.
If your customers are putting in more pavement miles than dirt, Dynojet’s front and rear axle sliders keep the Pan America’s axles protected. They also look pretty slick, too, showcasing that stylized Dynojet D.
Finding the perfect riding boot to suit both on and offroad riding can be a challenge, so Dynojet developed a rear brake lever extension that provides both improved grip and convenient adjustability. Simply install the lever extension, adjust it to find the perfect position and hit the highway with those dialed-in ergonomics.
With this suite of products for the Pan America, Dynojet aims to make sure your customers’ machines are prepared and protected for anything Adventure riders face while out chasing down time zones. ■

There’s never been any question to the logic – start younger and you are more likely to acquire the passion and master the skill. No matter what that skill is. The logic certainly applies for two-wheels, but the very nature of powersports places an already high entry level on a complex sport. But where is the aptitude for riding a motorcycle born? At its simplest, it comes down to wheels, handlebars and balance
Fortunately, the current bicycling market has come up with some excellent products that allow youngsters to wrap their growing minds and chubby fingers around these core elements of motorcycling. Parts Unlimited is home to some of the products that are leading the way, providing a pathway into motorcycling and helping young riders discover the passion, joy and autonomy that can be found on two wheels. All those products can be found in the 2024 Bicycle catalog.
One of the most evolutionary steps in the youth cycle revolution started in 2007 with the introduction of the balance bike. Strider Bikes out of Rapid City, South Dakota, took the world by storm with a very simple
concept: A child-sized pedal-less bicycle that allowed little ones to scoot themselves around, exploring two-wheel motion and balance before worrying about pedals.
This concept subverted the existing model of training wheels, which attempted to teach pedal motion before mastering balance. The results spoke for themselves, and children were off and running on Strider youth balance bikes.
That Parts Unlimited Bicycle catalog carries several options of Strider balance bikes, including the 14-inch Sport, the 12-inch Sport and the 12-inch Pro models. For very young go-getters, there is the Balance Bike Rocking Base that attaches to the 12-inch model to create a fun balancing and rocking experience before a child can walk.
A separate Pedal Conversion Kit is available for 14-inch models for when a rider is ready to move up from scooting to pedaling. Strider even has a solution for snow days, a ski-conversion kit that can easily attach to wheels for winter fun.
Another big step in the evolution of youth cycling was the advent of the electric-powered balance bike, or e-balance bikes. Similar in form to the Strider, kids could now add the excitement of throttle power to the ride. Check out the Bicycle catalog to see the Moose Agroid RS-16 E-Balance Bike, which came onto the scene in November of 2022,
building upon this rapidly growing and expanding youth market. While Strider products are geared for children ages 0-7, the Moose Agroid RS-16 is made for kids 8 and older. The Agroid can help build on those balance skills by teaching throttle control and braking. Variable speed settings means kids can start out slow and work up to a faster pace.
Well-known as a one-stop shop for all-things powersports, Parts Unlimited also offers a wide selection of youth accessories, helmets and gear. The Bicycle catalog features youth helmets from 100%, Kali and Strider – open face, modular and full-face options designed to protect chubby cheeks. 100%, Moose Racing, Strider and THOR provide a great selection of kids’ apparel that they will actually want to wear. Your customers can also find youth-specific elbow and knee pads from Alpinestars, G-Form and Strider for when little rippers decide it’s time to send it.
Check out D’Cor for graphics kits for Stacyc Stability Cycles, and look to Moose Racing for a selection of graphics kits for the Agroid RS16. From OEM race-replica looks to pinks and purples, these kits can transform E-Balance bikes into custom dream machines. Moose Racing also extends to offering Stacyc accessories, from training wheels to aluminum footpegs, skid plates and safety flags.
We’ve created freeway bars for the 300 and 500. We created solo racks for all three models as well as a backrest with its own optional rack for each bike. The accessories are available in a gloss black finish only. And the 1100 and 500 each can sport a 50-state legal slip-on muffler for enhanced sound and performance. The mufflers come in black with a bronze tip and laser-cut COBRA logo. All products are made in the USA.

To capture the hearts and minds of little ones, you first must appeal to your customers (and their parents).
Nicole Dougan manages the Strider brand’s only retail location in Bentonville, Arkansas, and has years of experience in previously running her own retail bike shop. In her current role, Nicole has gained a lot of experience in the youth market, and admits she has also seen businesses cutting themselves short in this space. She was eager to share some useful insights to Parts Unlimited dealers on how to merchandise to young riders, and how to talk to parents about navigating the flourishing youth bicycle market.
When it comes to showcasing these products on the retail front, it’s important to reach both children’s and parents’ eyes on different levels – literally. “What we found works best is finding a way to merchandise the product … at the kids’ eye-level so that they’re seeing it, even if it means merchandising in multiple spots because we want the kids to see it, and be interested,” Dougan said. “Then we want
somewhere where the parents can see it, too, and this can be in a different spot, where they aren’t bent over having to get at whatever it is the kids are interested in.”
Another aspect that Dougan emphasized is the autonomy of riding a bike. This is something that adults well know, but it is a useful reminder that this also starts at the early stages of the two-wheel experience. Both in the retail space and in the home, it is important for children to get up close and personal with the products. This understanding can help build sales by both drawing kids in at the retail front, and talking to parents about how children will build their experience at home.
“The whole concept behind Strider is that we’re getting them used to balance, used to riding and making sure the child is really comfortable with it,” she said. “We have to coach parents and the team around the fact that it is important for the kids to be able to self-explore the product. Because that’s where the comfort level begins.
“We do the balance bike demo area in the store. We do have them sign waivers, but we put them on the bike right away. And when I say put them on the bike, we put a helmet on them, and give them access to it. We don’t pick them up and put them on the seat. Because the second somebody starts to do that with it, it becomes about what somebody else wants and not about what the kid wants.”
This, of course, points to the usefulness of providing a demo area in your dealership, or a place for kids to play. “A lot of the big dealers already have a place like this, because they’ve already identified that children can be a distraction in the sales process,” Dougan said. “If you’re going to have a space where they can be hands-on, and the kids are already being entertained, you might as well entertain them with something that can then result in a sale. A demo area doesn’t take much for the little kids. Getting on the bike and letting them ride, obviously we’re talking about non-motorized balance bikes.”
continued on page 54...
...continued from page 52
This play area can not only help occupy otherwise distracting little ones, but can amount to a very logical add-on purchase.
“If the parent is buying a $12,000 motorcycle, there’s no reason they shouldn’t leave with some entry-level fun for the family,” Dougan noted. “It’s such a low price-point for someone as young as 16-18 months that will help instill confidence and a love for riding. It’s a no-brainer.”
With Strider cycles starting at less than $200, and the Moose Agroid RS16 priced very competitively at $799.95, it makes the add-on sale as easy as possible. This then gives you a new customer who will continue to grow with the product line, ideally into a full-size motorcycle down the road.
When it comes to commonly asked questions and advice she has for parents about getting kids interested in riding from a young age, Dougan again points back to the autonomy aspect.
“The thing we tell parents is to give them access,” she explains. “We have parents all the time say, ‘Oh my kid has this, and they’re just not interested in it.’ Well, where do you keep it? Is it on the shelf in the garage, and they can’t explore it? Then it’s not something they’re likely to have an interest in. So, access is huge. Again, building that autonomy and letting them explore.”
Another commonly asked question by some parents is, “Why the balance bike?” This is a fair question coming from a generation of parents that learned to ride with training wheels. Balance bikes obviously put balance first – counter to the way many riders started out.
“We’re still on that learning curve to where people think that having stabilizers [training wheels] is better; it’s the way they learned,” Dougan said. “There’s data to support [the advantage of learning on a balance bike] now, as far as getting them to start early, letting them have that autonomy. It really is so much more than getting them pedaling. It’s about the balance and that confidence that they have in themselves. Which translates to all physical activities, really.”
With a broad selection of products, parts and accessories in the youth balance bike space, it makes more sense than ever to appeal to young eyes. Talk to your Parts Unlimited sales representative to find out more about how you can adjust your retail space to draw both kids’ and parents’ attention to this growing segment. In the end, it can help you drive add-on sales today, and build new customers for tomorrow. ■
Did you know that only one in four kids in America will ride a bicycle this year? Children of powersports families, of course, don’t tend to be among that statistic, but for the rest of the country, learning to ride a bicycle isn’t an everyday rite of passage. Strider founder Ryan McFarland is also the founder of the All Kids Bike nonprofit foundation, which is working to change that through its groundbreaking Kindergarten PE Learn-To-Ride program.
The program is free to schools, but only through the participation of fans and donors to help provide training, curriculum, balance bikes and helmets to schools across the country. Strider is the largest donor to the All Kids Bike foundation, committing 1 percent of gross revenue to the organization annually, though more support is always welcome. “Many kids aren’t riding because they simply don’t know how,” McFarland said. “Teaching this milestone skill through the school system is the best way to reach the greatest number of children in the shortest amount of time.
“All Kids Bike is riding sweep for all these 5- and 6-yearold kids who are on the verge of being the majority lost opportunity for the riding industry. Every child we can make bicycle-capable in kindergarten becomes a future motorcyclist prospect.”

Stunt riding, track riding and even some Adventure riding: KTM stunt rider Rok Bagoroš does it all, and he does it in style. No matter what, or how, he’s riding Rok depends on Avon tires to get the job done.
Stunt riding, track riding and even some Adventure riding: KTM stunt rider Rok Bagoroš does it all, and he does it in style. The Slovenian stunt rider brings excitement and energy to every kind of riding he does. So many disciplines means Rok needs a variety of tires that are up to the task, and he counts on Avon to supply them.
Rok and Avon first teamed up in 2019 after Rok noticed the top stunt riders he admired also used Avon tires. He had been working with a different tire company, but he knew it was time to take things to the next level.
“My career grew and grew, and I was searching for a partner that would follow my dreams and goals, and that would identify with the kind of project I’m into,” Rok says. He adds that the meeting with Avon “gave me the feeling we were in the right place.”
These days, Rok is using Avon 3D Supersport and Spirit ST tires for his KTM Duke 790 stunt bike. When he’s on the track, it’s on a KTM 1390 SuperDuke equipped with Avon 3D Supersport tires. He chooses Avon TrailRider tires for Adventure riding.
Recently, Rok started using the Avon Spirit ST tire for his drifting, because the tire gives him the predictability and feedback he needs for that style of riding. “Drifting is always a competition where you constantly battle with yourself by losing and catching the grip,” Rok explains.
“You need to find the tire model that doesn’t overheat and holds the grip. It’s hard to find. The Spirit ST’s shoulder compound is just the ticket when it comes to providing both predictable grip and consistent performance across the duration of a show.”
Before he was a KTM factory rider and a Duke Ambassador, Rok was a kid washing dishes after school so he could buy a scooter. He began doing stunts on it and managed to get himself a spot on a tour with the late Chris Pfeiffer, a renowned German stunt rider. Rok had long been a fan of Chris, who became a mentor to him. Rok began climbing the ladder of stunt rider success, eventually landing with KTM.
Rok’s live shows demand tires that can keep up with his frenetic pace. He worked with a DJ to come up with a 20-minute show set to music. “My style is very aggressive and very fast,” he explains. “I want to keep that Chris Pfeiffer feeling – you’re doing technical tricks without a break in between. That’s one of the hardest styles you can do. You need to practice a lot to combine the tricks and figure out which ones work together.”
In recent years, Rok has started producing online content, so fans all over the world can see what he and his Avon tires can do. ■

There is no better way to show off parts than by putting them on a motorcycle. For the Louisville NVP, Moose Racing had a 2022 KTM 250 SX in its booth, but it looked nothing like the stock version. Thanks to a long list of Moose Racing parts as well as components from some other key vendors, the 2-stroke was transformed into a show-worthy bike.
When Moose Racing’s Austin Weaver was asked to tackle the build, he designed something he’d like to own himself. One look at the KTM, and it’s easy to see why. With a fierce black and orange holographic color scheme, and more than 50 aftermarket parts, the bike both looks and performs like a beast. Not surprisingly, dealers at the Louisville NVP were excited by the bike and the way it demonstrates how the right components can result in a total transformation.
Among the many Moose Racing parts on the KTM are some of the newest options from the brand, including titanium pegs and plenty of carbon fiber details.
It’s impossible to miss the sleek carbon fiber fork guards up front. These guards simply snap over the forks, so not only do they look good, but they are also incredibly easy to install.
Look down a little further on the bike, and you’ll see the carbon disc cover standing guard over the front rotor. Moose Racing has extensively tested these disc covers in racing, putting them through the most extreme conditions to ensure they provide a high level of protection for
the rotor. There are five layers of carbon fiber and aramid material, and the four-point aluminum mounting plate both adds strength and eliminates flex around the rotor.
The carbon fiber skid plate is also designed to be extremely durable. By using an antiballistic composite material, this skid plate has a longer fatigue life and higher tensile strength compared to an aluminum version. The materials allow the plate to flex, so it will bounce back into place after hard hits. The high front keeps mud from building up on the engine, and the skid plate extends to protect the side engine cases and water pump, too.
The titanium foot pegs on the KTM are as durable as they are light. Each set weighs in at less than 300 grams, making these an ideal choice for racers looking for every possible power advantage. The cleated platform keeps feet firmly in place, and the beveled design prevents the foot pegs from getting snagged in deep ruts.
These new foot pegs look great paired with the Moose Racing shift lever, which is anodized black with an orange tip to match that classic KTM orange. The forged shift lever arm is made from aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum, and the whole assembly has UV protection to preserve the color.
The forward controls of the KTM got a complete overhaul, beginning with a Moose Racing triple clamp. It is made from 6082 aluminum to provide the right blend of weight savings and rigidity. The split-design clamping area provides more accurate torque and reduced stiction of the forks.
The race-ready Flex Series handlebar in black is also made of aluminum, so it is both lighter and stronger than a standard handlebar. As the name states, it is also designed to flex – by eliminating a crossbar, the bar can flex naturally to keep a rider’s hands and arms more comfortable.
While the handlebar keeps hands from getting tired, the Moose Racing Contour 2 handguards are a barrier between the rider’s hands and any hazards encountered on the track or trail. The shaping provides the right amount of coverage without looking bulky, and the design also allows the handguards to flex in an impact to prevent breakage.
The orange Lock-On grips stand out in stark contrast to the black handlebar and handguards. The lock-on system makes the grips incredibly easy to install, requiring just an Allen-head mounting bracket and a few seconds. Once installed, the Lock-On grips will stay securely in place, with no slipping. Each set of grips includes the necessary throttle tube cams to fit both 2-stroke and 4-stroke applications, making these a perfect choice for the 2-stroke KTM 250 SX.
The SX-1 wheels are among the most notable upgrades on the KTM. The polished stainless steel spokes are eye-catching on their own, but the black wheels combined with an orange hub make the setup even more of a showstopper. For this build, the SX-1 wheels have been paired with a set of Michelin StarCross 6 Mid-Soft tires ■ » Talk to your Parts rep about Moose Racing parts for off-road bikes. Dunlop’s new Geomax AT82 is engineered to perform in a variety of off-road racing scenarios, no matter the terrain. For good reason too, as those conditions can contain everything from hardpack to loose sand.
When the 2024 GNCC season kicked off in February, Dunlop was the big winner of the event. Racers on the new Geomax AT82 tire swept all the Pro classes at Big Buck, including XC1, XC2 and WXC. The AT82 is a big upgrade from its predecessor, and the successful race weekend proved just how much potential this new off-road tire has.
Engineering a tire for off-road racing is no easy task, since there are so many different environments to factor in. From hardpack to sand, and everything in between, it is difficult to create a tire that excels in all scenarios. And yet, that is exactly what the team at Dunlop set out to do with the Geomax AT82. This tire benefits from Dunlop’s decades of experience – both from the company and its fleet of off-road racers – as well as plenty of design and technology breakthroughs. The result is what Dunlop says is its most versatile off-road tire to date. The AT82 features construction methods and a profile that are designed to handle the obstacles of off-road riding with ease. The tire might be tough, but it is also supple enough to give the rider good feedback while keeping the rear end settled.
Dunlop’s Progressive Cornering Block Technology (PCBT) has been incorporated into both the front and rear, which improves control and consistency through the corners while also increasing the tire’s longevity.
PCBT works by reducing the distortion of the center knob while it is under heavy loads, thereby improving handling and steering. And, because PCBT extends beyond the transition knobs on the tire carcass, cornering becomes more predictable and stable.
The profile of the Geomax AT82 has been optimized for improved bump absorption as well as improved stability. When comparing the tire to that of its predecessor, the AT81, it is easy to see that the profile of the AT82 is taller and narrower. The redesign improves the comfort level while also giving the rider a more connected feel to the ground.
The AT82 is bi-directional. When mounted in one direction, the center knob is designed to perform well in sand and soft terrain thanks. When reversed, those knobs excel in intermediate and hard terrain.
One of the reasons the AT82 is such a versatile tire is that the rear is bi-directional. When the tire is mounted in one direction, the center knob is designed to perform well in sand and soft terrain thanks to a semi-scroop effect in the design. When the tire is reversed, those knobs excel in intermediate and hard terrain, providing a broad surface area that helps with both forward drive and durability.
Dunlop has two front and four rear sizes of the Geomax AT82. Compared to the AT81, this tire offers improved handling, traction, durability, controllability and absorption. ■

Viewed from the road, Motorcycle Supply, owned and run by Bill Kaszer in Manhattan, Kansas, appears to be like most other independent motorcycle shops in America. A roof, four walls, a front door and a cluster of frontage windows create a deceptively nondescript facade.
But, step inside the building that anchors one end of the strip mall at 620 Fort Riley Boulevard, and a quick glance reveals a huge inventory of motorcycle parts and accessories. There’s also eye-catching motorcycle memorabilia including vintage and modern machines, POP displays and assorted artifacts (including pinball machines!) that might prompt you to echo Dorothy’s famous line in The Wizard of Oz: “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”
Well, you are definitely in Kansas, and the Parts Unlimited dealer’s popular indie shop is for real. Spend a little time inside observing how Kaszer and his friendly crew present themselves over the course of the day and you’ll see why Motorcycle Supply is such a hit with customers.
In fact, motorcycle rider Jose C. of Huntington Beach, California, was glad that he happened to be near Manhattan, Kansas, when his bike got a flat tire during a cross country ride.
Here’s Jose’s review post on Yelp: “Got a flat on a cross-country road trip. They [MC Supply] were great enough to wait for me past closing in order to get my bike here. They also surprised me by saying they would change my tire then and there. I cannot say better things about their service.” See, even riders from outside of Kansas sing Motorcycle Supply’s praises.
Ever since Kaszer acquired Motorcycle Supply from its previous owner in 2008 his No. 1 rule about doing business has been, “Be fair. Be honest.” However, treating customers with respect is only one aspect of that effort, for another we’ll once again turn to Kaszer who says, “Having a well-stocked inventory that riders want is important, too.”
That makes sense, and it’s apparent that Kaszer practices what he preaches. The shelves and assorted displays at Motorcycle Supply are packed tight with a big range of products, including everything from chain lube to riding gear to colorful top-shelf helmets. If a rider needs it, chances are good it’s here.
Motorcycle Supply’s Parts Unlimited rep, Nick Spooner, takes the narrative at this point. “The shop itself is really cool, and is two floors high with tons of memorabilia, pinball machines, cool old and new bikes, etc.” Spooner and Kaszer have known each other since they were young men sharing
bouts on Midwest road-race tracks. Ironically, too, Spooner joined Parts Unlimited in 2008, around the same time that Kaszer took over Motorcycle Supply.
Kaszer marches to his own drumbeat, pointing his selftaught retail methods in a somewhat unconventional direction. It’s what he describes as a “non-traditional retail system.” That is, he stocks his inventory the way he feels it should be stocked, relying heavily on his instincts regarding customer demand for certain products. As he’ll tell you, “Algorithms are not my style,” even though like all dealers today, he must rely on them at times.
Kaszer lightheartedly refers to himself as a “motorcycle nerd,” which in Kaszerese speak translates to, “someone who lives and loves the motorcycle life, 24/7.” As far as Kaszer and his crew are concerned, if it’s motorcycle related, then it’s on the table for discussion. It’s that mindset that the MCS crew shares with the motorcycle enthusiasts who shop at the store. Doing so means there’s always enough product on hand to allow for a quick sale, as opposed to the customer shopping online.
Motorcycle Supply owner Bill Kaszer is a regular at the Parts Unlimited NVP Product Expos and annual Dealer Rides. In fact, he hasn’t missed one yet. Here’s the best of both worlds when Rob Buydos talked with Kaszer after he won a free trip to a Parts Dealer ride given away at the 2020 Louisville NVP.
Olson photo
Of course, it’s not really that simple. The store must also have the right products in stock. And for that, Kaszer relies on crafting his own showroom retail marketing tactics. These include dedicated displays and spacious shelving – most of which are constructed by Kaszer and his team –that showcases products in a way that encourages curious motorcyclists to take their time, and shop for the goods up close.
They then can inspect the goods with their own hands. For instance, there’s usually up to 600 to 700 helmets on the shelves at one time. That means stocking and displaying helmets of all styles, sizes and graphics to fit and suit most riders. Moreover, MCS prices the helmets to be competitive with similar product offered on the internet. A major difference is that the helmet in the shop is there for the rider to fit and try on. They can see the shell graphics in person, and see how it looks while being worn. Best of all the customer can purchase the helmet and wear it for the ride home that very day.
A similar retailing philosophy is applied to much of MCS’s inventory. For instance, tires. To keep the big wheels turning, the shop stocks 500 to 600 tires at a time to meet all riding conditions for all brands and types of motorcycles.
Despite any retail tactics, sometimes the right product just isn’t within reach for a customer. That’s when a quick call to Parts Unlimited results in next-day delivery, and at no shipping fee to the customer! All is a day’s work for a selfproclaimed motorcycle nerd who happens to be totally committed to the retail market.
However, everyone knows that all work and no play can make for a dull person. The best way to prevent that from happening is to mix pleasure with business, and the crew at Motorcycle Supply does a good job of that.
Starting at the top, Bill Kaszer is not one to miss out on attending the various dealer functions promoted by Parts Unlimited, its sister company Drag Specialties and its parent company, the LeMans Corporation. Motorcycle Supply hasn’t missed a Parts Dealer Ride yet, and has no intentions of doing so in the future.
As Kaszer puts it, “The Parts rides are fun. Just plain fun! I like meeting other motorcycle nerds like me – people into bikes.” He further explains that “fun time’ shared with other Parts dealers and vendors allows everybody to discuss their marketing and retailing experiences with each other. Not only are the rides fun, they’re also a chance for all participants to improve their respective businesses.
And what’s with the pinball machines in the Motorcycle Supply house of motorcycle parts? Good question, and it further confirms the fun factor at Motorcycle Supply. See, Kaszer grew up playing pinball machines, saying they were, “The video games of my youth back in the ’70s.” You’ll find his collection – some modern, some vintage – on the shop’s second floor. Bring your quarters, too, because all those classic games are operable, and customers are encouraged to put them to test.
Kaszer shares more of his youth with customers, displaying the first three motorcycles he ever owned. Among all those parts and accessory displays you’ll spot a 1974 Suzuki TS175, a 1975 Yamaha RD-125 and a 1980 Suzuki GS-450S, accompanied by a few other choice classic rides, mixed with a variety of modern bikes as well.
One more “fun” story before we close this chapter on Motorcycle Supply. Through the years the dealership has offered T-shirts sporting the shop’s logo on red, white, black and blue tees. MCS encourages shop visitors to take selfies of them wearing their MCS T-shirts at races, rallies, shows and such to post on social media.’
The real trick is to get a celebrity to wear one of the shop’s “famous” T-shirts. However, when that’s not possible, some MCS employees employ a little Photoshop fun to match a famous face with one of the shop T-shirts. Perhaps the most famous “MCS T-shirt photo” features the motorcyclist’s motorcyclist, Steve McQueen, wearing a Motor Supply T-shirt while straddling a Triumph motorcycle.
So, there you have it, everything you need to know about one of the most livable and lovable independent motorcycle shops in America, and a proud partner of Parts Unlimited. If you’re ever riding across Kansas, and you’re near Manhattan, stop and say hello to the Motorcycle Supply crew. Motorcycle nerds are always welcome. ■

There are a lot of options when it comes to choosing a Galfer brake pad compound. In addition to multiple compound choices to best suit the rider’s style, there are also applications across a wide range of segments, including street, off-road motorcycle, Adventure/dual sport and even ATV/UTV fitments. While there are plenty of differences to be found between these applications, one thing remains the same, and that is Galfer’s commitment to quality and reliability.
Galfer is a family-owned company that was founded in 1952. Since those earliest days, the company has had a simple philosophy of producing braking components that do not compromise on quality. That begins with choosing highquality materials for everything from the steel for the rotors to the brake pad compounds.
Galfer uses a range of tests to refine its braking components. Riding and braking conditions can be set up to mimic realworld data, allowing the Galfer team to modify compounds in search of the best possible formulation.
Galfer offers both semi-metallic and sintered brake pad compounds in various formulas, all carefully blended to provide stopping power, braking consistency and excellent feedback. Riders have a choice in the brake pad that suits their riding needs, whether it’s a daily commute or a weekend of trail riding.
Creating a successful compound is no easy task, and at Galfer, there are only two people responsible for every compound formulation created by the company. Between them, they have more than a century of experience.
A lot goes into creating a Galfer compound. The weight and top speed of the motorcycle must be considered, as does the environment the bike will be in. What works well on a street bike is going to be different than an off-road compound, where riders will be encountering very different terrain and riding conditions.
While we typically think of a Dyno as being a way to test engine performance, Galfer uses Dyno testing to refine its braking components. Riding and braking conditions can be set up to mimic real-world data, allowing the Galfer team to quickly and efficiently modify compounds in search of the best possible formulation.
One aspect Galfer carefully considers with every compound is the way the brake pad feels for the rider. That transfer of feel from the pad to the lever is an important part of the process, because the rider needs to get the right bite and an excellent feel for what the brakes are doing.
This commitment to quality is reflected in the certifications that Galfer products carry. Most recently, Galfer brake pads have received ECE R90 certification. Braking technology and materials have changed significantly since Galfer’s founding in 1952, but the company’s high standards have remained the same, year after year. ■

It’s an age-old question that motorcyclists have pondered for years: How often should you lubricate a motorcycle’s drive chain? Well, answers vary with considerations for everything from riding conditions and mileage to what to use for cleaning and lubing. There’s no way around it, it’s just a necessary motorcycle maintenance task.
Or is it? Regina Chain has another option, never lubricate the chain again!
Regina Chain’s approach comes via its unique HPE chain that requires no lubrication onto its rollers thanks to a unique, and extremely rugged, coating process using Tetrahedral Amorphous Carbon, often referred to as “ta-C.”
The process creates an incredibly durable surface that needs no lubrication. HPE itself stands for High Performance Endurance, and Regina Chain applies the exceptionally slick and durable ta-C coating to the chain’s links and rollers during assembly. Doing so allows the coating to permanently bond with the chain’s metal, so there’s never a need to lubricate the chain again.
