s you read this, the 58th annual NFL Superbowl game has been played. For those of us in the powersports industry, however, before then one of our two annual ‘Superbowls’ held each year had already taken place. It was the Parts Unlimited NVP Product Expo in Louisville, Kentucky held over the weekend of January 20-21. The other big industry event is held each fall in Wisconsin. Stealing a term from football, the Spring NVP is our kickoff for the upcoming season, and leading motorcycle and related powersports retailers from coast to coast flocked into the 140,000 square foot expo space at the Kentucky International Convention Center to see everything new from the many Parts Unlimited vendors who were exhibiting in the dealer show. Many of those vendors had also been on-site the two prior days giving product information seminars to the Parts Unlimited sales force. Check out our report from Louisville starting on page 54.

You probably know that Parts Unlimited has added a complete new line of products in recent years – E-Bikes. Be sure to have a look at our feature stories in this issue about the 2024 INTENSE Tazer MX lineup; there are some very newsworthy changes you need to know. That story starts on page 16. And lastly, that exciting photo on the front cover is just a hint of what you’ll find in the THOR catalog this year. Naturally, Parts Unlimited didn’t plan for dealers to sell E-Bikes and expect their customers to look for good riding gear somewhere else. THOR has a great line of cycling gear, and you can read all about it starting on page 22. Wishing you all a successful Spring season! ■

THOR’s Jim Gallagher Retires LONGTIME DESIGN DIRECTOR

O

ne cannot speak of the THOR brand in the modern era without voicing a debt of gratitude to the company’s longtime design director, Jim Gallagher. Now, after 38 years of service, Gallagher has retired.

Originally from Virginia, Jim’s family made the migration to the west coast in the 1970s. Nestled into the off-road-dense community of San Diego’s East County, Jim was instantly attracted to motorcycles – beginning on trailbikes and riding in the hills of his local community, going on to proper motocross bikes and plenty of seat time on the tracks and trails of Southern California, Baja and beyond. After graduation from San Diego State University, Jim worked in graphic design, media, and photography, ultimately landing a gig with Hallman Racing in El Cajon, California. It was this legendary organization that brought Jim up close and personal with the motocross racing scene, building products, and emphasizing the professional fit and finish that would adorn the sport’s greatest stars for decades to come.

“I would like to give Jim huge credit for the enormous success of the THOR brand name. Throughout the years, Jim has always been a great and important asset for the development of THOR,” says THOR founder Torsten Hallman. “First during the ’80s, as a young and eager designer with great ideas, later as the boss of the THOR organization. He has been with the company for a such a long time, that he reckons that THOR is like his ‘fifth child’! Now, as Jim is retiring, I wish him all the best for the future”. In his post-nine-to-five life, Jim plans to enjoy his time with his wife Jan and their children and grandchildren, all while pursuing his alternate loves of playing the drums and restoring classic muscle cars – both hobbies that he has enjoyed immensely over the years. “I first met Jim when THOR became a part of the LeMans family in 1993 and we have worked together ever since. I have always appreciated his creative talent but even more, his love of the industry and his part in it,” says LeMans Corporation President Mike Collins. “THOR is a reflection of this, and we are proud of the THOR family Jim has built. He will be missed but, as always, he has planned ahead, and is leaving THOR in good hands.” Jim’s tireless efforts for crafting products of the highest standards, leading others by example, teaching, and mentoring will long resonate within the THOR brand and staff members for many, many years to come. ■

D

aytona. It’s the one word that strikes both excitement and fear into the hearts of all those who race, work or have anything to do with the inner workings of the event that takes place every March in Florida. It’s the one everyone counts down to – 45 days, 38 days, 14 days. And before you know it, it’s here. We’re talking about the annual pilgrimage to Florida for the Daytona 200 and the other three classes - Mission King of the Baggers, BellissiMoto Twins Cup, and the Super Hooligan National Championship - that kick off MotoAmerica’s racing season. And, as you read this, there are mechanics, crew chiefs, fabricators, painters – you name it, all burning the midnight oil in an effort to get everything ready, and to make sure Daytona International Speedway is race ready. There are also racers doing the same, all pushing that little bit harder in the gym, and making certain that they’ve dotted their ‘i’s and crossed their ‘t’s. It’s been that way since the first of what is about to be the 82nd running of the Daytona 200, and all for good reason. Motorcycle races don’t get much bigger than the Daytona 200 and there may not be a racetrack in the world that evokes the same feelings as the banked tri-oval that is Daytona International Speedway. When you drive under the tunnel and into the infield of the Speedway, the hairs on the back of your neck stand up and you feel the history flowing from every part of the facility.

★ MARCH 2024

On Thursday, March 7, everyone’s hard work goes on center stage as the motorcycles roll out for the first of the practice sessions in preparation for the Daytona 200, which will be held on Saturday, March 9. As this issue went to press, the rider-entry deadline was still open so it’s too early to say exactly who will be attempting to win the 82nd running of the Daytona 200. However, one racer who will most definitely be trying is the defending race champion Josh Herrin and his Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati Panigale V2. Herrin will have his hands full with the likes of Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Brandon Paasch, a two-time winner of the 200, and his teammates Tyler Scott and Richie Escalante, with all three sure to have notions of victory. And there’s more. The shiny brand-new Rahal Moto Ducati team, owned and operated by Bobby and Graham Rahal of IndyCar fame, and managed by AMA and World Superbike Champion Ben Spies, will also be well represented in their MotoAmerica debut – with PJ Jacobsen, Kayla Yaakov, and Corey Alexander ready, willing, and able astride their Ducatis. Those racers and so many more will show up in Florida believing they can win the Daytona 200. Certainly that’s a boon for race fans traveling to Florida to see what is traditionally a battle at the front that lasts for 200 miles and is often not settled until the final 10 yards. ■

Build Your E-Bike Business NEW LOWER PRICING, DROP-SHIPPING PROGRAM ANNOUNCED

Parts Unlimited now has new pricing on the entire INTENSE Tazer MX lineup, including the performance-focused Alloy Pro.

I

n a move designed to reach a wider audience of dealers and their customers, Parts Unlimited is kicking off 2024 with revamped pricing on its range of premium INTENSE Tazer MX eMTBs.

In addition to this permanent price reduction for the INTENSE Tazer MX Alloy Pro, Tazer MX Alloy Expert, Tazer MX Carbon Pro and Tazer MX Carbon Expert models, Parts Unlimited has also launched a drop-shipping program for its entire range of E-Bikes. The drop-shipping program is available for the whole INTENSE line, as well as for the seven E-Bike models in the iGO Electric lineup.

16

★ MARCH 2024

The efforts are a two-pronged approach to not only lower the barrier of entry for dealerships eager to add E-Bikes and accessories to their product mix, but to also broaden the appeal of the well-spec’d INTENSE range for consumers interested in buying a high-end carbon frame eMTB at an incredible value. The retail price of the Tazer MX Alloy Pro is now $6,499, while the Tazer MX Alloy Expert will now sell retail for $4,999. Meanwhile, the value-packed retail price of the Tazer MX Carbon Pro is $4,999 and the retail for the Tazer MX Carbon Expert is $3,999.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

That valued-added pricing is also great for dealers who wanted to bring on a Tazer MX Carbon Pro or a Tazer MX Alloy Pro but balked at the initial cost of adding another product category their dealership’s lineup. “The timing couldn’t be better for dealers who see the opportunity for E-Bikes within their business,” says Mike Ralph, E-Bike Category Manager for Parts Unlimited. “The new lower pricing opens up the conversation to a wider customer base, and the drop-ship program takes the same easy shipping option that savvy dealers use for parts and turns it into a viable profit center.” Make no mistake, these are the same INTENSE Tazer MX models absolutely loaded down with high-quality, familiar components that make them an attractive crossover prospect to motocross riding customers. They’re just now offered exclusively through Parts Unlimited at an extremely attractive retail price that’s easy on customers’ wallets.

Tazer MX Carbon Pro

The Carbon Pro features a World-Cup level Öhlins DH38 dual-crown fork with 170mm of travel. An Öhlins TTX22M coil-spring shock soaks up all the bumps for the rear. The reliable Shimano EP800 motor offers up 85 Nm of torque for the Pro model, which is especially noticeable at low cadence – perfect for the climb up before ripping a downhill run. Pro-level Magura MT7 brakes front and rear provide plenty of stopping power. The Carbon Expert is equally as well sorted, though less aggressive, with components that work in concert to provide a confident riding experience for all levels of riders. It features a DVO Diamond E3, single-crown fork with 160mm of travel, and a DVO Jade coil rear shock. The Shimano E7000 motor 60 Nm of torque. There are also parts like the e*thirteen crank and wheelset, and an INTENSE Recon dropper post comes standard. Both the Pro and the Expert roll on Maxxis Minion tires. Batteries can easily be changed out allowing your customers to take a spare on an ultra-long ride, and always have a fully charged spare at home. “The Tazer MX platform is a proven design that resonates with the moto crowd,” Ralph says. “Now, using that same budget, buyers can ride out with a car rack, helmet, pads and a full riding kit. We are also seeing well-outfitted riders picking up a second bike so they can bring a friend.”

Tazer MX Alloy Pro

The INTENSE Tazer MX Alloy Pro and Expert builds feature a sleek and sporty frame that still carries the traditional ruggedness of INTENSE’s identity. That updated frame geometry makes the bike quicker and more responsive and is a perfect option for some seriously epic riding. The Alloy models are equipped with new generation high-output Shimano motors, the EP801 for the Pro and the EP600 for the Expert. Both bikes also feature new-generation Shimano batteries – BT-EN806 for the Pro and BT-EN805 for the Expert.

DROP-SHIPPING DONE RIGHT While the new pricing and those same proven components make the INTENSE Tazer MX model lineup a serious value proposition for dealers, it’s the introduction of the drop-shipping program for all the E-Bikes in the Parts Unlimited lineup that’s certain to appeal to dealers and their customers alike. This offers a turnkey solution to dealers wary of “flooring” any of the INTENSE models in their showrooms. Just highlight them at the parts counter or elsewhere in the dealership with access to the 2024 Bicycle catalog, or include them on a store’s website, and customers can order them and have them directly shipped to their homes.

Parts Unlimited is now offering drop-shipping on the entire INTENSE Tazer MX line, including the sought-after Tazer MX Carbon Expert.

The Alloy Pro also flexes its motocross roots with Öhlins suspension, the new RXF38 single crown fork and TTX22M coil shock. There’s 170mm of travel in the front and 155mm of travel in the rear, which, when combined offer confidence inspiring handling. A Renthal Fatbar outfitted with ODI Elite Flow grips keep riders in full control, and traction comes courtesy of Pirelli Scorpion e-MTB tires front and back. The Tazer MX Alloy Expert build consists of a fine-tuned combination of components prepared to deliver miles of E-Bike smiles. Sharing the same updated frame design and construction as the Pro build, the Expert build consists of a Shimano Steps EP600 motor package offering 85 nm of torque, powered by a 504Wh battery. Other components of the Expert build consist of DVO suspension, e*thirteen crank and cassette, Maxxis Minion tires, WTB wheels and more. These are all notable components that have proven themselves more than worthy in the mountain bike world. Overall, this Expert build offers a confident riding package for all levels of riders who may walk through dealer doors. “The new Alloy platform is a cutting-edge design with all the tweaks we learned on the Carbon bikes,” Ralph says. “These bikes just plain rip, and are now even more competitive.”

Today’s generation of consumer are very comfortable buying products online in general, with E-Commerce sales in the third quarter of 2023 making up about 16 percent of all retail sales, according to the U.S. Census Bureau of the Department of Commerce. That’s $284.1 billion in online sales. Additionally, there has been a steady rise in direct-toconsumer bike brands that really got a boost when the Covid-fueled shutdown of the world collided with the pandemic bicycle boom. Simply put, more and more consumers are more comfortable with buying products online – even with often-times technical products like bicycles and E-Bikes. This bodes well for dealers who want to add a new profit center to their stores by marketing and promoting the INTENSE Tazer MX models and the iGO Electric range, as well as all the apparel, parts and accessories offered in the 2024 Bicycle catalog. With the new pricing, the expanded drop-ship capabilities and the growing Bicycle catalog, Parts Unlimited continues to “Support the Sport,” and serve as the one-stop shop for all dealers and their E-Bike needs for support and service. “A full spectrum of great bikes, best-in-class parts, with a very affordable buy-in means that dealerships can bring in a new category and get traction right out of the gate,” Ralph says.

Built for Versatility, Adventure INTRODUCING THE INTENSE RECON MX

A

s the newest addition to Parts Unlimited’s exclusive INTENSE E-Bike lineup, the Recon MX is a model built for adventure. Just take one look at the Recon and it’s apparent that this E-Bike isn’t like the others. In fact, one could argue that it resembles something of a “dual-sport” bicycle, one that is rugged enough to tackle the trails, but is outfitted as the perfect grocery getter. The Recon MX is an exercise in versatility. Built on 27.5-inch wheels, the Recon MX features a custom rear rack, saddlebags and a rugged handlebar bag. The rear rack has a bungee drawcord for securing extra cargo, and the front and rear bags feature MOLLE webbing for attaching clips and other items.

The INTENSE Recon MX is the latest eMTB to join the Parts Unlimited lineup.

There are Acerbis handguards to protect against rocks, brush and branches while ripping around off-road. Fenders back and front also help keep splatters and roost to a minimum when things get messy. Other standard features include pedals, a water bottle cage and a kickstand – the latter being an important feature for when the bike is loaded up for adventure. “The Recon’s origins were based on feedback from dealers and staff that wanted a vehicle that could get them out in nature in a hurry,” says Parts Unlimited’s E-Bike Category Manager Mike Ralph. “The included racks and bags make this the Swiss Army Knife of the bike world.” Because this is an INTENSE eMTB, you can bet it’s not built to merely look great, but also perform. It’s designed to get riders out exploring further, farther and faster. The aluminum alloy frame is equipped with a proven DVO suspension – a 160mm DVO Diamond E3 single crown fork on the front and DVO Jade R coil on the rear, a setup that offers plenty of travel. When it’s time to hit the trails – or the bike path – an integrated Shimano 504 Wh battery provides the power needed. The battery is stored in the frame’s downtube and can be charged directly while still installed in the bike. The powerful Shimano E7000 motor offers the perfect amount of power and allows for three power-assist modes as well as a walk mode. Effortless and dependable shifting comes courtesy of the Shimano Deore 11-speed setup. The easy-to-find on/off switch is located in the top tube for quickly powering the bike on and off. Customers will find that the Recon MX is equally sorted for comfort and stability thanks to the WTB Volt saddle, which features medium padding thickness and subtle curves for plush pedaling. The standard equipment INTENSE Recon dropper post makes quick adjustments of the seat height as easy as hitting the handlebar-mounted lever.

The INTENSE Recon MX is designed for versatility, making it a go-anywhere, do-anything eMTB.

The Maxxis Rekon tires come tubeless ready, and are designed for trail use in technical terrain. They can handle loose or hard-packed trail conditions, and are just as confident rolling on a bike path. Your customers will be in full control of the Recon MX thanks to the Shimano Steps LCD display. This allowed them to access and monitor the bike’s Shimano motor and battery system via a sleek display of the electrical system. The display shows battery life, speed and the power assist mode on the home screen. ■

This latest bicycle collection was designed with purpose for pedal-oriented performance and is optimized for undeniable functionality, traits that are evident in THOR’s Assist line of jerseys, pants and shorts, Comp guards and its Vapor Pack. The Assist line is THOR’s core collection of mountain bike riding wear consisting of variations of jerseys, pants and gloves. Assist jerseys are available in both long sleeve and short sleeve styles, helping you cater to a wide range of riding conditions for your customers.

THOR Assist short sleeve jerseys

Moto-Inspired eMTB Gear and Equipment Assist long sleeve jerseys transplant THOR’s deeply rooted motocross DNA and adapt it to the specific needs of mountain biking. These jerseys are constructed with moveability, durability and sleek looks in mind, starting with a durable polyester main fabric that provides a comfortable and athletic fit in combination with THOR’s proprietary hybrid, set-in sleeves. Plus, moisture wicking materials help keep riders cool during grueling climbs, displayed in red, black and gray colorways with sleek, clean designs for 2024. On warmer weather days or for more casual riders, many of your customers may prefer a short sleeve jersey. THOR’s Assist short sleeve jerseys feature the same durable construction and innovative features as their long sleeve counterparts, but are available in even more colorways and designs. From clean and simple black and gray to sportier colors and designs like red and camo, Assist jerseys are sure to have something to offer all your eMTB customers. A mountain bike gear kit wouldn’t be complete without shorts and pants, of course, and the Assist line continues the high-tech trend down both avenues. Refined even further for 2024, Assist pants offer the essence of highend motocross design and materials purpose-built for the rigors and demands of a hard-charging eMTB lifestyle.

THOR

THOR’s designers created Assist pants with several factors that help them set the bar for what riders expect in a performance bicycle pant. THOR’s proprietary chassis achieves flexibility and ventilation in an impressively lightweight package, while the ratchet fly closure and side cinches help provide a precision fit. Assist pants pre-curved chassis design and rear yoke stretch panel promote natural movement on the bike in the active riding position, helping riders feel supported instead of hindered when they’re charging the trails. Plus, your customers can bring their smartphones or other personal items along for the ride thanks to THOR’s zippered pockets that keep everything in place while ripping corners and airing out jumps. Much like with the jerseys, THOR has a comfortable, well performing option for more casual rides with Assist shorts. Even though these shorts have roughly half the material, they deliver the full gambit of performance benefits and technology, including premium construction, ergonomic design and precision fit features.

Assist pants

The Assist line is completed with premium gloves that deliver lightweight, durability, comfort and functionality all in one bike-ready package. Transitioning from moto to mountain biking can leave riders feeling a bit unprotected with less protective equipment typically worn in comparison. Thankfully, THOR’s Comp line helps provide protection without sacrificing comfort and mobility. THOR Comp knee guards and elbow guards feature a soft impact protector mounted inside a fabric sleeve for a sleek and reliable fit that can easily fit underneath riding gear. The protector is impact tested and certified to EN 16211:2012 standards. Vented nylon mesh is used throughout, along with an Airprene panel to maximize breathability. The fit is secured with silicone backing and an adjustable strap to help each rider tailor to their liking.

THOR Comp knee guards and elbow guards

Regardless of where your customers are riding, one thing is for certain: Pedaling isn’t easy! Bringing hydration along for the ride is key with any level of bicycling, which is why THOR designed the Vapor Pack. This backpack-style hydration pack holds 1.5L of water riders can easily access through an over-the-shoulder bite valve. Vapor Packs are designed to stay secure all ride long with fully adjustable straps and a buckle across the chest. Vapor Packs are equipped to carry plenty of extra belongings, too, with compartments perfect for phones, tools, snacks and more. These items just scratch the surface of what’s available from THOR in its 2024 eMTB line of gear and equipment. ■

HELMETS

Short Name, Big Tech

The Science Behind a Helmet Brand

In simple terms, 6D’s Omni-Directional Suspension, or ODS, acts as suspension for a rider’s head. In the event of an impact, ODS reduces energy transfer to the brain, from low-velocity impacts all the way up to high-velocity impacts.

To test just how effective ODS is, 6D turned to a sport where head injuries have been a hot topic in recent years; the NFL. The NFL hosted an engineering challenge to discover a higher level of energy management material – something that could effectively absorb and deflect the energy of an impact. 6D won the competition, and the NFL’s third-party testing and validation of the effectiveness of ODS has had a monumental impact on the company.

S

ometimes, even the smallest word or name can express something big. When it comes to brands, it’s hard to find a name shorter than 6D, but that simple name conveys a lot about the company and its approach to helmet design. Three-dimensional movement in space includes movement across the X, Y and Z axes. Known as the Cartesian coordinate system, this movement through space is known to engineers as “6 Degrees of Freedom,” or simply “6DoF.” It’s easy to see where the name “6D” came from, but what does that engineering term have to do with helmets? It’s a nod to the way 6D helmets are designed. The 6DoF principle is put into practice with what the team at 6D has termed its Omni-Directional Suspension, or ODS. ODS is implemented in every helmet made by 6D, including its off-road, street and bicycle helmets. The short explanation of how ODS works is that it enhances a helmet’s ability to respond dynamically to impacts. Perhaps an even simpler way of looking at it is to think of ODS as suspension for a rider’s head. In the event of an impact, ODS reduces energy transfer to the brain, from low-velocity impacts all the way up to high-velocity impacts. 6D accomplishes this by using a suspended dual-liner design in its helmets, which can displace energy and shear in any direction. In other words, the design allows for that “6 Degrees of Freedom.” This energy-deflecting design also assists with reducing rotational impacts, something that is definitely getting a lot of attention right now in the powersports world.

Parts Unlimited carries five 6D helmet models. In the off-road division, the ATR-1 and ATR-2 Moto helmets are designed with features like increased clavicle clearance, a sternum pad and emergency release cheek pads. The shells are a proprietary blend of advanced carbon fiber, composite fiberglass and Kevlar. The ATR-2Y features the same great quality and features, but it is designed for youth riders. The ATS-1R is a street helmet with a 3K carbon fiber shell, ample intake ports for enhanced airflow, and an aerodynamic wing that reduces drag, buffeting and lift at higher speeds. For bicycle and E-MTB riders, the ATB-2T is a helmet featuring exceptional airflow, an integrated sunglasses dock and a lightweight yet strong polycarbonate shell. ■

TIRES

Hammer Time

Race Proven, Retail Ready Tires

Parts Unlimited dealer and professional UTV driver Cody Willenborg has counted on AMS Tires’ M2 Evil radials for getting him across the finish line of the brutal King of the Hammers for three years running. Those M2s are also the tires most often requested by his customers at CW Motorsports.

C

ody Willenborg of CW Motorsports knows there’s truth to that old powersport maxim, “Win on Sunday. Sell on Monday.” As the owner of the bustling UTV shop in Effingham, Illinois, and a professional UTV driver, Cody races on and sells AMS tires. His model of choice, and the tire his customers request the most often? The M2 Evil radials. When the Parts Unlimited dealer first opened his shop back in 2011, racing was just an aspiration. Still, the groundwork for competing on AMS tires was there. “We carried AMS when we started because I liked the way the tires performed and knew they had options for every use,” Willenborg says. A few years later when CW Motorsports began competing, it was on AMS rubber. “I started racing in 2015 doing local stuff,” he says, “then we started racing nationally, and in 2021 we went all-in and raced King of the Hammers.” For the uninitiated, King of the Hammers, staged in the harsh high desert of California’s Johnson Valley, is one of the toughest UTV races in the world. It’s a challenging enough course that some teams fail to finish, with tire damage ranking as a top reason drivers DNF. “We’ve been able to finish King of the Hammers every year for the past three years,” Willenborg says. “We run the

M2 Evil, and we’ve literally never had a flat in competition. Sidewall slices take others out, but the M1 and M2 have a heavy sidewall that does a great job resisting damage. The tire is phenomenal in the desert, over rocks, and even in the wet. For KoH what I like so much is the traction you get in a rocky situation and how well the M2s withstand it. They don’t puncture and they wear well, so the tread keeps a sharp edge, and you get great traction.” For the past several years CW Motorsports has campaigned a Polaris Pro XP, but for 2024 Willenborg will pilot a 2023 Pro R. “The Pro R is a new platform, so there’s a lot to learn in terms of the chassis and suspension, spare parts, etc.,” he says. The team will have a lot of new equipment to get familiar with, but one thing they know well and will continue to rely on are M2 Evil tires. “We race on the M2, but it’s also a kickass all-around tire, so it’s something we recommend to recreational users, too,” Willenborg says. “AMS has a great selection, and they’ve been great to work with.” AMS offers a wide range of tire models to fit nearly every rig and application. Willenborg’s preferred tire, the M2 Evil, is available for all popular wheel sizes. ■

Easy Engagement

Spring Conversion Clutch Kits replacement Clutch Kits include a CNC precision-machined anodized billet aluminum pressure plate containing six heavy-duty coil springs to replace the bike’s original pressure plate. When installed, each Barnett conversion Clutch Kit provides improved clutch engagement, as opposed to the less predictable OE diaphragm spring design. Since adjustability is the primary goal with this kit, Barnett includes six additional coil springs with a slightly different pressure option that allows even better feedback to the rider. Multiple coil-spring pressure options make this kit suitable for either stock or high-performance modified engines. To maximize performance, Barnett’s clutch plates for Yamahas are engineered for heavy loads. In addition, the replacement clutch plates are machined for increased oil flow, which helps control heat buildup to prevent clutch fade. Each kit’s clutch stack height is measured for a precise fit prior to boxing and shipping to dealers.

Barnett’s Spring Conversion Clutch Kits come in a range of fitments for 12 different Yamaha models. The kits provide improved clutch engagement, and are adjustable to fit your customers’ riding styles.

M

otorcycles with diaphragm spring pressure plate clutches are known to give riders fits, ranging from mild apprehension to full-on anger. The culprit? Usually the lack of adjustability, often translating to inconsistent pull effort at the clutch lever. Generally clutch lever resistance diminishes as the lever nears the hand grip. Some riders have a tough time adjusting to that inconsistency during a long ride. A replacement clutch, one with a reconfigured pressure plate that promotes consistent clutch lever feedback is the solution. Barnett Clutches & Cables offers that option for Yamaha owners, a Spring Conversion Clutch Kit that eliminates the diaphragm spring pressure-plate. In fact, Barnett’s replacement Clutch Kits cover 12 different models, ranging from the mighty V-Max (to model-year 2007) to the versatile Super Tenere (the ad on the opposite page lists all Yamaha models). Since we’re addressing performance clutch kits, it’s worth noting that Barnett also offers a Street/Sport Clutch Kit intended for hardcore sportbike use, too. Each kit features Barnett’s new C22 Carbon or K22 Kevlar friction plates, tempered steel drive plates, and a set of heavy-duty springs. The segmented friction plates are specifically designed to increase oil flow through the clutch, offering smoother, more consistent performance. Each tempered steel plate is put through a de-burring process to remove sharp edges for a superior and better-fitting product. The heavy-duty springs are manufactured from chrome silicon, then shot-peened and heat treated to maintain consistency throughout. The entire kit is made in the USA. ■

TIRES

Timeless Appeal

Modern Tires for Café Racers “The first time we tried Avons, we were blown away,” Mike says. “It made the bikes handle like a modern bike! You can use these old bikes with modern, road-worthy tires. It feels completely different.”

Mike Seate of Café Racer Magazine and Café Racer Garage has long used Avon Tyres on his builds, including this 1978 Suzuki GS750E.

T

“They’re radials,” Mike says, “but they’re in sizes and shapes that don’t look out of place on a vintage bike. The Avons, especially the RoadRiders, they look the right way, they feel the right way, and they fit the motorcycles. That shows how much R&D they put into it.” Mike had a Discovery Channel show with the same name as the magazine for five years. The first episode featured a 1978 Suzuki GS750E that was transformed into a café racer. The most significant improvements to the bike came from a suspension upgrade and Avon tires.

here are always plenty of project bikes underway in the Café Racer Garage, and you can bet that many of them will be sporting RoadRider MKII tires from Avon.

When Mike Seate started Café Racer Magazine 16 years ago, he wanted a comprehensive tech section in each issue. He started the Café Racer Garage to provide that content. A constant stream of bikes to build and parts to test have kept the Café Racer Garage busy since then. Not long into the life of the magazine, Mike began to use Avon Tyres on his builds. The RoadRider MKII tires provided the best of both worlds – a timeless appearance that was right at home on café bikes, plus modern materials and engineering for a great ride.

30

The RoadRider MKII tires get high marks in both wet and dry performance, and they are a nimble tire for bikes of all ages. Currently, Mike has three café racers preparing for their debut in the pages of Café Racer Magazine, including a 1967/72 Norton, a 1972 CB450 and a 1977 CB750. All three bikes are outfitted with Avon RoadRider MKII tires.

PARTS MAGAZINE

★ MARCH 2024

That, Mike adds, is a lesson for anyone who wants to take a vintage motorcycle to the next level. “For people looking to upgrade a motorcycle, yes, aesthetics are important, but if you’re wondering about spending $1,500 on a paint job, do your tires and do your suspension first. Tires are the most affordable component of all that and will make the biggest difference.” Café racers have an allure that few motorcycles can boast, and their popularity only seems to grow. “It’s not an easy bike to ride, but it’s a blast!” Mike says. “Riding them is all about exhilaration.” ■

RIDING APPAREL

Dreaming of Summer

Time to Stock Up on Hot-Weather Gear The Spring 2024 lineup includes six colorways for the Sahara line, all with a distinct, modern graphic design. After all, riders want to stay cool and look good doing it. The sublimated graphics stay bright, wash after wash. It’s easy to understand why Sahara gear is a perennial favorite. Having the right gear for the riding conditions can make all the difference between a great day of riding and a miserable, sweaty slog. The ventilated Sahara gear will get riders through the most extreme heat, from the muggy South to the dry Southwest. Sahara gear is a great choice for riders of all disciplines and skill levels, including anyone who simply wants a fun day on the trail all the way up to professional racers. Four-time Arenacross champion Kyle Peters sports Sahara gear in competition, and he wore it on his way to being named the 2022 AMA Athlete of the Year.

Moose Racing’s Spring 2024 Sahara gear is designed and built to help riders stay cool and look good doing it. When the weather warms up, let your customers know that items in the Sahara line are must-haves for those hot summer days.

Pro riders are outfitted in Moose Racing gear for more than just their comfort. Moose Racing works closely with its sponsored riders to develop and test gear. By putting pants and jerseys through the rigors of racing, the team at Moose Racing can fine-tune the comfort and fit of every piece. The Sahara gear is, of course, no exception, and pro riders gave feedback throughout its development to ensure it was just right.

epending on where you live, the idea of summer riding might seem a long way off. If you’re dreaming of warmer weather and great off-road riding conditions, then chances are good your customers are, too. It might be too early to wear hotweather gear, but it’s definitely time to make plans for stocking up on it. Moose Racing has released its Spring 2024 gear to help dealers do just that. Among the latest gear is the updated Sahara line of pants and jerseys. These off-road items are must-haves for those hot summer days.

The Sahara jersey is light and breezy thanks to the fully vented, lightweight polyester mesh used in its construction. This choice of materials ensures maximum airflow, but riders don’t have to worry about that airflow making the jersey flap in the wind. Moose Racing gave the Sahara jersey a slimmer performance fit to cut down on bulk. Staying hydrated is a must while riding or racing, and it’s especially important to keep up with fluids during the hotter months. The Sahara jersey includes an access port for a hydration pack hose, so the hose can easily feed up into the rider’s helmet. The Sahara jersey is available in a wide range of sizes, from S all the way up to 3XL. The Sahara pants also feature ventilated polyester mesh in strategic areas, providing plenty of airflow while still

giving the pants the durability they need. Air flows well through the pants, but key areas have extra layers to guard against the environment, like full-grain leather panels on the inner knees. Comfort on the bike is paramount, which is why the Sahara pants have a pre-curved design suited to a riding position, and there are stretch panels in strategic areas to give just the right amount of flex. The Sahara pants come in sizes 28 to 42, and hook-and-loop straps at the waist allow the rider to fine-tune the fit. When it comes to footwear for off-road riding, most of us immediately think of boots. And while those are a necessary component, we tend to forget that the right socks for the ride make a big difference, too. The Sahara socks are designed to keep feet dry and comfortable during the hottest of days. The socks are made from a Coolmax polyester, which wicks sweat away from the skin. In addition to keeping feet dry, this process

also creates a cooling effect for more comfort. In all, the Sahara socks are soft, thin and lightweight, and their ventilated design ensures maximum breathability. The socks get a dose of durability thanks to a nylonreinforced sole, ensuring extra strength in high-abrasion areas. The nonslip cuff and stretch bands keep the socks securely in place over the rider’s calves. Moose Racing offers a full line of off-road apparel. The Sahara line is perfect for the hottest of riding conditions, when breathability and ventilation are a must. The Agroid racewear line is the high-performance option ideal for extreme riding conditions. Pirelli’s motto is “We sell what we race, and we race what we sell.” The same tires that have helped propel Kyle Peters to four AMA Arenacross titles are the same ones on the shelves for customers. They’re also the same tires that Dylan Ferrandis rode to an impressive 5th place in Anaheim last month. The racing relationship goes much further than that. In addition to supporting riders and teams – including Phoenix Racing Honda and Beta Factory Racing – Pirelli is also a presenting sponsor of the Arenacross series. This is all great news for off-road riders, who can choose Pirelli Scorpion tires with confidence. Even Adventure riders can find a suitable Scorpion tire, since the comprehensive line has a wide range of applications and performance characteristics. The Scorpion MX tires are popular with pro racers in series like Arenacross, Monster Energy Supercross, and Pro Motocross. Protecting Tomorrow’s Pros Off-Road Gear for Young Riders

N

ot only are a lot of kids getting into off-road riding, but many of them are starting at a younger age, too. Whether these kids are destined for a future pro career in the sport or simply want to have a fun time on the track or trail, they deserve to have gear that is every bit as tough as what adult riders wear. With that in mind, Alpinestars has introduced the Kids Bionic Kickstart protection line, which includes chest, back and shoulder coverage for kids from 4-7 years old. All three of these protective gear products feature adjustable, highly durable components, all designed specifically for the youngest of off-road riders.

Alpinestars’ Kids Bionic Kickstart chest protector comes in two sizes for children in the 4-7 age range. It provides comfortable, sturdy protection and can be adjusted for growing riders.

The Kids Bionic Kickstart chest protector has semi-rigid TPR guards on the back and chest. There are shoulder cups, too, which connect to floating bicep plates to provide an extensive range of coverage. The team at Alpinestars knows that one size does not fit all for kids in the 4-7 age range, which is why the chest protector comes in two different sizes. There are also elasticated adjustment straps on both the chest and biceps to ensure a precision fit. Not only do these features allow the chest protector to fit most kids, but the straps can be loosened as the young rider grows. Another thoughtful feature of the chest protector is the adaptive V-shaped semi-floating design, which adapts to chest volume and movement. This unique design allows for greater comfort as well as body size adaptability. A wide, padded collar further enhances comfort. The Kids Bionic Kickstart elbow guards are soft and lightweight to provide maximum flexibility and comfort while still offering a high level of protection. Like the chest protector, there are elasticated straps that can be adjusted as the rider grows.

The Kids Bionic Kickstart knee guards provide a full-coverages solution in a lightweight design.

Young riders can also grow with the Kids Bionic Kickstart elbow guards, which have adjustable elastic straps. They provide flexibility, comfort and protection.

Both the chest protector and the elbow guards come in a black and red color scheme, and the sizes include small/ medium and large/extra-large. No off-road rider setup is complete without a set of knee guards, and the Kids Bionic Kickstart knee guards provide a full-coverage solution in a lightweight design. The knee and shin areas are both covered, but the articulated style

makes sure knees can still bend without any restrictions. The knee protectors come in one size, but the elasticated straps let the fit be fine-tuned. The black and red colorway matches the rest of the gear. ■

T

hese days, gearing up for a ride is more high-tech than ever, and Alpinestars is pioneering personal airbag systems with its Tech-Air line of gear. The latest in the lineup, the Tech-Air 3, is a highly versatile airbag-equipped vest designed for commuting in the city and light off-road Adventure riding. The Tech-Air 3 protects the entire chest and back when an accident is detected, deploying an airbag in only 50 milliseconds. Just how fast is that? The airbag deploys four times faster than the time it takes to blink your eye. The airbag is housed in a sleek vest that is designed to be worn as either an outer or inner garment. It’s up to the rider whether they want to wear the Tech-Air 3 outside or inside their jacket. Alpinestars offers the Tech-Air 3 in a women’s Stella cut, too. While the vest works great with any Alpinestars Tech-Air compatible jacket, it can also be paired with any brand jacket. If the vest is worn under the jacket, at least 4cm of circumference around the rider’s torso is required to allow the airbag to inflate completely in the event of an accident. While the airbag deployment is impressive, the really high-tech aspect of the Alpinestars Tech-Air line is how the system knows when to deploy the airbag in the first place. The airbag system functions independently of the motorcycle – meaning there are no tethers – and it

The Tech-Air 3 uses a series of tri-axial sensors, including accelerometers and gyroscopes, to detect motion in three dimensions. Working with the Tech-Air 3’s secondgeneration Pro compact ECU, the sensors report data 1,000 times a second. When the system detects an anomaly in movement that indicates a crash, it triggers an Argon cannister that deploys the airbag. Once deployed, the airbag will remain inflated for more than five seconds. Since most crashes last only a few seconds, that is plenty of time for the airbag to do its job. And what a job it does. Alpinestars, who has been developing the Tech-Air system for more than 20 years, reports that the amount of impact force transferred to the body in a crash is reduced by up to 95 percent with the airbag. After deployment, the argon canister can be replaced by Alpinestars or an authorized Tech-Air Service Center, and the vest can be used again. The airbag itself can be deployed 3 times before the bladder needs to be replaced. The Tech-Air 3 is easy to use, since it automatically activates when it is zipped up. An LED display on the chest shows the vest’s operational status, and the rider can use the Alpinestars Tech-Air app on their phone to run firmware updates, check the battery life and get other key information. ■

iders have high standards. They want the fastest lap time, pristine conditions, the most competitive team and premium gear. By choosing high-quality equipment, engineering and technologies, riders can improve their own performance. Bridgestone knows that what matters most to them is the ride, and that inspires the brand to keep innovating. With advancements made to the technology and design of the S22, the improved Battlax Hypersport S23 sets a new standard for sport performance in the Bridgestone tire lineup. Starting with tread design, the Battlax Hypersport S23 has improved on its wet and dry capabilities, increasing control, grip and stability in both conditions. With the incorporation of the Pulse Groove Technology in the rear tire, the Battlax Hypersport S23 has found all new levels of performance in wet conditions, giving riders the confidence to push more boundaries, rain or shine. The success of the S22’s revolutionary design can be seen and most importantly felt in the Battlax Hypersport S23 as the shape and construction remain the same. The improvements give riders the same reliability they’ve come to expect with the S22, with an added bonus of increased control and grip. control with better grip that maximizes the efficiency of the contact patch. The Battlax Hypersport S23 gives increased performance without losing or sacrificing any longevity and quality. Head-to-head, the S23 lasts 8 percent longer than the S22, with an all-new riding experience thrown in. Riders can expect to feel confident on the road for even longer with the innovations made. But improving on performance doesn’t just stop with longevity. The Battlax Hypersport S23 showed improvements on braking time, stopping 3 percent shorter than the S22. When it comes to cornering and traction, the S23 is 2.95 seconds faster in dry conditions, and 3 seconds faster in wet. These improvements bring more confidence to every rider, ensuring they get the maximum exhilaration from every ride, no matter the conditions. The standard of ride has been raised from the one previously set by the S22. Bridgestone believes in pushing limits in order for riders to push theirs. The Battlax Hypersport S23 opens the door wider for riders to experience a new level of sport. To feel more confident and stable. To improve safety and reliability. To push their machines, and themselves, to new levels. Bridgestone designed the Battlax Hypersport to be its ultimate hypersport tire option. ■

Moto-Ready Street Gear ICON’s Airflite helmet is designed for the street, but quickly converts to an off-road look with the Airflite visor and Airflite goggles.

any riders associate ICON with sportbikes and city streets, but there’s off-road practicality in gear like the Field Armor reinforced base layers. And the Airflite helmet, when it’s fitted with a visor and Airflite goggles, is just as at home off the street as on it. ICON’s lineup of Field Armor reinforced base layers are lightweight and low-profile, making them a perfect way to add an extra layer of armor without adding bulk. Field Armor is great for street and off-road riding, and even downhill mountain bike riders are wearing it. The Field Armor Compression shirt and pants are made of a Hydradry stretch mesh for ultimate comfort and moisture wicking. At the same time, D3O inserts add impact coverage, and they are topped with DuPont Kevlar fiber reinforcements for abrasion resistance. The D3O armor can be found in the chest, back, shoulder and arms of the shirt. It fits easily underneath a jacket, and it provides a cool, flexible layer to help guard against the ground. The Field Armor Compression pants have D3O inserts in the knees. They’re thin enough to fit easily under riding pants, but tough enough to give riders peace of mind. For riders looking for specific supplemental coverage, the Field Armor Compression knees and sleeves provide armor in just the right spots. Like their big brothers – the Field Armor Compression shirt and pants – these pieces are made from a stretch Hydradry mesh for supreme comfort and moisture wicking. The Compression knees include D3O knee armor and a tough TPU knee plate, while the Compression sleeves feature D3O armor and a TPU plate in the elbows.

46

The Field Armor Softcore vest can do its job no matter what kind of motorcycle is underneath the rider thanks to low-profile D3O impact protectors in the chest and back. The vest will fit easily under most hoodies and jerseys, and its Iron Weave mesh construction helps keep air flowing. Getting the right fit is just a matter of adjusting the elastic waist straps.

The Airflite goggles simply replace the visor to complete the off-road look. They have three layers of molded moisture-wicking foam combined with a 360-degree venting system for maximum comfort. The distortionfree, anti-fog lenses are compatible with tear-off systems. The Airflite comes in a lot of color and graphics options, ranging from the sedate single-color look to in-your-face graphic designs. Some of these options, like the Airflite Snack Attack and Airflite Blegh, come equipped with the MIPS Brain Protection System. ■

FAMILY TIES

REP’S RIDE: DAKOTA DOUGHTY’S 2004 KAWASAKI KX125

ome bikes are simply worth hanging onto. Worth cherishing, even. For Dakota Doughty, this 2004 Kawasaki KX125 build wasn’t a matter of fixing up a bargain find; it was sparked by the story of how his family began. The day he proposed to his wife was the day he helped her push this KX125 out of a muddy creek in Tulsa during a grand prix race. It turned out that a disappointing day at the races for both of them was the gate drop for their future together. “She rode for Team Green back in the early 2000s,” says Dakota about his wife, Kacey Doughty (White). “She was a big-time off-road/motocross racer around here in Oklahoma.

I dated the ultimate dream girl; one who rides and went on to become a nurse.” Years later, now as a Parts Unlimited sales rep covering the Southwest region, Doughty started to resurrect the eighthliter 2-stroke just as his wife was carrying their second child. “I always dreamed about building a 125,” Dakota says. “This KX was a bike my wife rode in her amateur days. It was always in the shed at my wife’s dad’s house. I started with Parts Unlimited in 2022, so when I came on with the company, I bought the bike from my wife’s dad and thought, with the resources, the vendors and the companies we have, let’s see what we can do.”

Diving into the Parts Unlimited catalogs was all it took to get the ball rolling. “I started reaching out, it first started off with Dan Fitch and Jared Krueger at Moose Racing,” Dakota explains. “From there, I was like, let’s see who else would step up and help out with it. It kinda went on from there. Other companies started sending me stuff, and a couple local dealers that I service agreed to help out.” The build quickly took on a life of its own, which prompted Dakota to call for some media reinforcement. “Once I started getting parts in, I thought, let’s see if we can take this to social

media,” Dakota says. His good friend Blake Shipman of BShipman Films was eager to help out, and began documenting the build process. “We spent countless hours, step-by-step, building a YouTube video, unboxing parts, doing product highlights and how things work,” he recalls. “It took me about three and a half months to get it done.” Visit https://youtu.be/9LCliPu6DWA?si= owfY49SRNLheHUIH to see the video “KX125 Moto Weapon Build.” Trying to chase down parts for a 2004 Kawasaki KX125 wasn’t the easiest of tasks, especially since it was still the tail end of Covid. welds; obviously that thing’s got some age on it. Everything checked out.

“The main backbone of the build was Parts Unlimited,” said Dakota. “It’s been around for so many years, and we have such great relationships with all these brands that you can walk into your brick-and-mortar shop, dig into a catalog and use all our parts numbers to find what you’re looking for. The support of that system was really the core of this build.”

Then I sent it off to Dylan Methany at 405 Mods in Norman, Oklahoma, one of my dealers,” he says. “They had the frame powder coated with Cerakote, also the motor mounts, master cylinder, the hubs, any type of bracket, all of that was Cerakoted. It’s more of an industrial coating that adds to the bling factor. It looks black, but in the light it’s got like a blueish greenish sparkle that matches the graphics.”

At the start of the project, the KX125 was in running order, “but it was worn out,” Dakota says. “Everything was sound, but it looked rough. I was like, ‘I’m going to go all out with it, redo the frame, all the bushings, bearings, motor work, top end, plastics – everything pretty much got replaced.” How do you revive a tired frame? Dakota explains the process that formed the ground floor of the build. “We stripped it all completely down and I had a machine shop go through and inspect everything. They inspected the frame and the

Next up was a full suspension rebuild. Jesse Smith with EnduroDEV, a company out of Norman, Oklahoma, handled suspension duties for the KX125 build. Using a non-traditional method of suspension dyno machines to measure damping metrics, Smith was able to dial in a precise setup for Dakota (yes, this “wife bike” is now a husband bike) should he decide to use if to race cross-country or rip some motocross laps.

everything up and tear everything up and the value wasn’t going to be worth anything. As of right now it is in the shed under a blanket and it is not moving.”

“I redid the whole bottom end with Factory Kawasaki parts,” Dakota says. “I thought, I’m already into the motor, I might as well see what I can do with big bore kits go. I reached out to Athena, and they said ‘Yes, we’d love to be a part of it.’ And they sent me the Athena 144 kit. It gives it a little more topend power; super excited that it’s a 144.”

Fitting with the narrative of the bike, and its ties to his family’s origin, Dakota also envisions this KX125 might have a place in his family’s future. When the time comes for his son Titus or daughter Salem Faith to start riding, he predicts the Kawi will really be valuable. “It’s already been in the family for a really long time so I thought, I think I’ll just hang onto it.” ■

Check out the accompanying build sheet to see the long list of parts from a range of Parts Unlimited vendors. It’s a big one, and the completed build is way more than the sum of all those parts. Nothing was left untouched and no detail was overlooked. A rather large compliment came from none other than three-time national champion Jeff Emig. “That was really cool,” Dakota says. “I had the bike at Louisville last year at NVP and I saw that Jeff Emig was at the Ryno Power booth. I knew he was a big Kawi 125 fan. I asked if I could get a picture of him by the bike. “He came over and we chatted about the bike and he was really impressed with it, the attention to detail. He was super stoked on it. He talked about how there’s a lot of builds out there that people will just put on wheels and tires and bars, but he was really impressed at the attention to detail. He was super cool about it and was really interested in it.” So, what is the plan now? With a gorgeous rebuilt KX125 (144!), essentially a brand-new motorcycle, ready to go, what is Dakota planning to do with it?

ust a couple of short weeks into 2024, the powersports world was already geared up to tackle the new year’s sales season. Savvy dealers knew the place to do so was at the Parts Unlimited Spring NVP Product Expo in Louisville, Kentucky. It was within the walls of the cavernous Kentucky International Convention Center that those dealers made their way through 140,000 square feet of exhibit space to see the latest and greatest from some of the top Parts Unlimited vendors. As always, the Spring NVP Product Expo was the kickoff to the beginning of the new sales season and offered dealers the chance for a hands-on look at the parts, tools, equipment, products, accessories, and apparel that are packed into the new Parts Unlimited catalogs. This year’s show offered all of that up and then some.

The energy was palpable from the moment the show opened and dealers and their reps poured into the convention hall in the annual ritual that kicks off the spring riding season. And, as always, the NVP was as much a homecoming and reunion of friends and colleagues as it was a business opportunity. With all that going for it, the show was a huge success. It’s not an understatement to say that it’s easy to just manage to make it from the front of the show to about halfway through before the day wraps. The show is that packed with vendors, products and product specialists eager to talk about the items that will soon be lining dealership shelves across the country. The January show also showcased the diversity of the Parts Unlimited product lineup, featuring not only the legacy powersports parts that are the company’s namesake, but

here is a lot to love about one tool that does it all. That is certainly the case with the Moto Pro diagnostic tool from CanDo International, which can be used to service all makes and models. However, CanDo also knows that some shops only work with select vehicles. Now, specialty shops can opt for the Moto Mini diagnostic tool. There are a lot of big features packed into this little tool to help make servicing vehicles easy, thorough and accurate. The team at CanDo designed the Moto Mini in three different versions. There’s one for American powersports vehicles, one for Asian brands and a third for European applications. This way, shops who specialize in one of these areas can buy exactly what they need. Like its big brother the Moto Pro, the Moto Mini is a comprehensive tool that is designed to be intuitive to use. It is easy to select the various functions as well as vehicle models, and everything is clearly displayed on a 7-inch Android tablet. To make it even more convenient, each Moto Mini includes the applicable cables. The Moto Mini can be used to diagnose and perform service on all the electronically assisted functions on a vehicle, like the engine, transmission and ABS. The tool can be used to read live data, and it is an easy way to read and clear trouble codes. When it comes to the vehicle’s systems, the Moto Mini can help fine-tune things like the steering and throttle position. Bleeding the brakes on an ABS system can be done with ease by using the Moto Mini, too. In addition to regular service functions, the Moto Mini can also be used to calibrate things like traction and lean angle to improve the ride of the customer’s vehicle. Each Moto Mini includes demo software, so users can easily walk through the possibilities before diving in on a service job. It’s a great way for users to get familiar with all the great features available from the Moto Mini, without the need to flip through a user manual. In addition to the included cables, each Moto Mini also comes with one year of included updates, allowing service shops to stay up to date with the latest models. A 1-year warranty is part of the package, as well. ■

E-BIKE CARRIERS

Ready for the Road

Rugged, Innovative Bike Carriers

Thule’s EasyFold XT2

I

f there’s one notable attribute about bicycles that’s always worth celebrating, it’s what a convenient form of transportation they’ve always been. Whether it’s a traditional pedal bike or a modern E-Bike, all it takes is a gentle push down on one pedal and then another and off you go to where adventure awaits! However, not every ride starts and ends in your customers’ driveways. Whether transporting bikes to a local riding area or bringing them along for a vacation, these are the moments when Thule’s range of bike racks and carriers become so important. When it comes to transporting today’s modern range of E-Bikes like the INTENSE Tazer MX Carbon Pro, weight is definitely a factor. Your customers need robust carriers designed for that heft and Thule’s EasyFold XT and T2 PRO XTR2 bike racks certainly fit the bill. Not only do they mount up easily to a car’s trailer hitch, they are also a snap to load and use. The EasyFold XT is fully foldable and compact and features a high load capacity. Available in an attractive black finish, it’s built to allow riders to easily mount two bikes – a task made even easier with the optional loading ramp. The wide distance between the two-wheel holders means the EasyFold XT can handle bikes with a range of wheelbases. Even with two bikes loaded on the EasyFold XT, your customers will have no problem accessing their vehicle’s trunk or hatchback. Simply step down on the smart foot pedal to tilt the whole rack away from the car to offer plenty of clearance. The bike rack itself can be folded up for easy transport off the car thanks to integrated wheels and carrying handles.

Thule’s T2 XTR

The T2 XTR is another great Thule innovation, a premium bike rack that can hold up to two bikes and is ready for a range of bike styles, including E-Bikes up to 60 pounds. The rack will work with bikes with 20-inch to 29-inch wheels, and up to 5-inch tires, making it ideal for road, MTB, fat-tire and E-Bikes. There is no contact between a bike frame and the carrier, instead bikes are easily loaded with the rack attaching to the bike via the front and rear wheels. An integrated cable lock and lock knobs help keep everything secure. The T2 XTR can also tilted back when loaded for car access, and tilted up and out of the way when empty to keep things tidy. For a convenient way to load bikes in a pick-up truck, Thule’s GateMate Pro is a heavily padded “rack” that mounts over the tail gate and holds up to seven bikes. Thanks to its padded, heavy-duty vinyl construction, your customer’s bikes and truck stay protected. ■

Going Forward, Looking Back

Clutches and a Mirror for Off-Road Vehicles

W

hether your customers are using their UTVs and ATVs for work or play, chances are good they’re pushing those vehicles to their limits. When a vehicle is being used for hauling loads, plowing snow, cruising down a trail or some other activity, there are going to be components that need replacing to keep things running like they’re supposed to. Moose Utility Division has everything from parts that help vehicles keep moving forward to accessories that help your customers see where they’ve already been. Any ATV or UTV that’s getting regular use is going to need some love in the clutch department. Moose Utility Division has primary clutches to make it easy to drop in a whole new assembly. These completely assembled clutches include the spring and weights, where applicable – some models require the OEM version of those parts. These primary clutches use the same clutch puller as the stock clutch, and any brand of drive belt can be used with them. These perks make the Moose Utility Division clutches that much easier to install, so your customers can get back to their work or fun in no time.

Every clutch is factory balanced to ensure it will perform flawlessly, so they can be installed with assurance that customers are getting quality and reliability. By using a combination of aluminum and magnesium, these clutches are both strong and lightweight. The center shaft has been heat-treated to add to its strength and durability. Plus, the spider buttons have a larger diameter, which increases the contact area and longevity of these primary clutches. Moose Utility Division has a long list of applications for its primary clutches, including models with and without EBS. When it comes to the “seeing where you’ve been” part, Moose Utility Division has a UTV rearview mirror with an LED dome light. The mirror has a slight convex shape, which increases the field of view, making it easy to see what’s behind. Anyone who has tried to use a mirror while bouncing along off-road knows that it can be tough to get a clear view because of all the vibrations. Moose Utility Division tackled this problem by designing the mirror with a rubberized seal and ball mount. These components reduce vibration at all speeds. Plus, the ball mount makes it easy to adjust the mirror on the fly.

Moose Utility Division’s UTV rearview mirror features an LED dome light, and is designed to have reduced vibrations at all speeds. The mirror’s slight convex shape helps increase its field of view.

The UTV rearview mirror with an LED dome light has a low-profile mount that makes it compatible with most windshields and roofs. ■ Moose Utility Division has primary clutches for ATVs and UTVs that make it easy to drop in a whole new assembly. The company is committed to that Parts Unlimited slogan, “We Support the Sport,” and its actions back up those efforts. “We’re especially dominant in sponsoring top off-road racing teams, and we’re plenty active in road racing, too,” says DP’s North American headquarters’ president, Larry Mills. “Without naming all the competitors that we sponsor, we are extremely involved at the pro level, and among amateur racers, too, and that includes sponsoring events.” In terms of product support, DP Brakes supplies a large contingent of sponsored racers with disc brake pads ranging from Pro-MX in off-road competition to SDP Sport HH+ and RDP X-Race Titanium pads for road racers and flat trackers, plus much more. That’s where Parts Unlimited’s army of dealers become relevant. See, all DP Brakes-sponsored racers use the same DP products listed in the Parts Unlimited catalogs.

DP Brakes supports racing and racers across all disciplines, at the pro and amateur levels. One such rider is threetime Canadian Pro Superbike Champion Ben Young.

The Chicane LT tire has fantastic handling characteristics, Brinkerhoff says. “It slides just enough in the corners and then grips right back to center,” he explains. “With the carcass construction, and less sidewall tread, the LTs stay straight as an arrow even on loose gravel roads that tend to make other tires skate side to side at speed.”

Oversize 270mm Rotor Kits for Off-Road

M

ounting an oversize brake rotor to an off-road motorcycle is just as easy as mounting a stock rotor thanks to two oversize kits from Galfer USA. The SKW oversize kit makes a great OEM replacement, while the full-floating oversize Wave® rotor kit is ideal for riders who want a big upgrade in performance.

Riders who spend time on the track or prefer a more aggressive, performance braking style will want the full-floating oversize Wave rotor kit. It also includes a relocation bracket as well as a set of semi-metallic carbon brake pads to complete the package. The floating Wave rotor design creates more contact time between the brake pad and the rotor. The result is better lever feel and modulation as well as precise braking, even under the most aggressive riding conditions.

Both of these kits feature Galfer’s 270mm Wave rotors. The rotors are laser-cut from 420 high-carbon stainless steel, and then they’re double-disc ground in parallel process, resulting in remarkable flatness for maximum pad-to-rotor contact. The SKW oversize kit features a non-floating Wave rotor plus a 6061-T6 aluminum relocation bracket. This high-quality braking setup is a great OEM replacement that gives riders a nice upgrade in both looks and braking performance.

Galfer USA offers both brake kits for an extensive number of applications, including off-road bikes from the early 1990s all the way to current models. ■
