his is always an exciting time in the motorcycle business for me, because it’s the kickoff of the next business season. It’s about new products and new programs, announcements of who is racing for what teams and looking ahead. In our world with Parts Unlimited and the many great companies they distribute for, this is when we assemble annually in Madison, Wisconsin for the Parts Unlimited NVP Product Expo to see what they all have planned for the coming year. Starting on page 32 you can check out our report from this year’s event. “NVP” stands for National Vendor Presentations and more than 200 of them were on hand, as well as the entire Parts Unlimited sales rep force, LeMans Corporation management and, of course, many of you from the retail stores around the country. One event at the NVP that is like no other anywhere in the motorcycle industry is the Michelin Power Jam. It’s a fun night to relax at a local theater with some of our closest industry associates, many who take their turns on the stage showing their musical talents.

The NVP was the first official Parts Unlimited event since Mike Collins was announced as President of the company. He was very visible at the event, busy as ever meeting with the many suppliers to make sure the company stays on top with the best products and the best service in the industry. Be sure to read our story about Mike starting on page 28. For many of you, snowmobile season is just around the corner and before the snow flies, this is the time to get stocked up with all of the latest from Arctiva, Moose Utility Division, Revolution Performance, Woody’s, 100%, Camso, LeMans Seats, Z1R and more. You can read about all that in our Snow Showcase section that begins on page 53. We’ve also got a feature story about Harris Huizenga, one of the top stars in the all-new sport of Snow Bike racing. There’s an exciting new aspect of the sport that can get some of your two-wheel customers back into your stores over the winter months. ■

and cheer ending where the hero wins and gets the girl – or trophy, as was the case. A seasoned off-road racer and long time EnduroCross veteran, Abbott grabbed a front of the pack start setting a blistering pace in the early laps. If no mistakes were made, the race and the Casey Folks Cup were well within the Thor rider’s grasp. But as every gambler knows, there are no sure things in Las Vegas and an otherwise non-eventful, slow speed crash had Destry down, spun around, and looking out of the running for a podium finish, never mind a win. Coincidentally, the crash happened right in front of Daryl Folks, son of Casey, who’d stationed himself trackside to shout encouragement to Destry at every lap.

Without a doubt the most inspiring ride of the evening had to be Thor rider Destry Abbott’s win in the Vet 35+ main. Abbott thus became the first-ever recipient of the Casey Folks Cup, an award dedicated to the legendary Nevada off-road racer and event promoter. It was a fitting victory for a rider who’s spent more than a year in treatment for leukemia. “The timing for me wasn’t ideal as I’d just had a treatment just before Las Vegas so I wasn’t 100 percent on riding at all. But, the Casey Folks Cup held so much meaning for me so I just had to go. I really wanted to win,” Abbott said. “My strategy was simple, keep it on two wheels and finish. Definitely the ugliest race I’d ever run! I was so depleted and absolutely exhausted but I could not be happier!” Like a Hollywood blockbuster, Abbott’s race was full of nailbiting drama, an ‘against all odds’ comeback, and a stand up

Ever the hard charging survivor, Abbott dug deep, righted and re-started his Yamaha and got back in the race. It didn’t look promising at first but in the final seconds he re-took the lead and jumped the tires at the finish line for a clear win. An emotional Folks celebrated– even shedding a few tears of elation. “I don’t know when I’ve been more nervous watching another guy race but it would’ve been a lot easier to be out there racing myself,” Daryl Folks said. “I’ve known Destry for a long time, ever since he and I teamed up on his first pro race. He has been through some tough times over the past several months but he’s still a hardcore racer and one of the finest people you could know.” “My dad really liked and respected Destry and I have to believe that Casey Folks was looking down and willing him on to the win tonight.” ■

or Parts Unlimited dealer and motorcycle endurance rider Wendy Crockett, the journey is the destination.

The owner of The CycleSmiths in Kernville, CA has always liked the space that exists between the beginning and ending of a ride and, after completing many Iron Butt Association certificate rides, was selected to run the 2009 Iron Butt Rally. She finished the 11-day, 11,000-mile-plus ride in 26th place and was hooked.

xxxxxxxxxx

That love of riding recently earned Crockett a gold medal finish — first in women, seventh overall — in the 2017 Iron Butt Rally. The journey of 13,055 miles over 11 days began and finished in Minneapolis, and took her and her 2005 Yamaha FJR1300 as far north as St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, and south down to Key West, Florida, with a jog west to a Dallas checkpoint.

Over the years Crockett’s skills as a rider and as a mechanic — she’s a graduate of MMI — have earned her a noted position in the endurance riding community. She finished in second place in the Motorcycle Endurance Rider’s Association 10-n-10 (10,000 miles in 10 days) in 2010. Two years later she competed in the same event for another second place finish. In 2013, she not only picked up her first win at The Spank Rally, she went on to take home the third place trophy at the 2013 Iron Butt Rally.

“I’ve always enjoyed riding for the ride,” Crockett says. “The destination has always been part of the excuse for simply getting out on the road.” ■

hen Thor has an introduction of its new racewear, the company does it right. The enthusiast press is invited to come out to not only see the new riding gear, but also to ride with it and test it for themselves. Plus, Thor invites its top riders to come out, ride for photos, and testify on their own how well Thor racewear works in action. Thor recently invited its top racers, the enthusiast press and Parts Magazine out to Chocolate Summit Ranch in San Diego, CA to check out the new 2018 gear. The ranch features a well-prepped motocross track, EnduroCross track, and some off-road trails – the perfect location to put Thor’s new gear to the test. Editors from all the popular publications and sites were there to get details on the new gear to report to their readers,

Thor had the entire line of 2018 Thor racewear beautifully displayed for photos and examples of the new products were handed out to the racers and editors. After a briefing by the Thor staff, everyone was welcomed to ride the track and enjoy a catered Mexican food lunch fresh from a taco truck. There was plenty of Thor staff on hand to make sure the editors and riders were well taken care of and informed. Thor’s brand manager, Josh Shorter explained Thor’s line-up of racewear including a new direction with the budgetfriendly Sector riding gear (see story on page 20).

Budget-Friendly Racewear

The Thor Sector line is built around the five different colored jerseys that can be mixand-matched with the black pants.

T

hor’s 2018 racewear lineup has something for everyone and a standout in that mix of new features and bright colors is the all-new Sector gear.

A new budget-friendly line, Sector racewear puts genuine Thor design and Thor-quality materials and construction into almost every rider’s reach. It all starts with the Sector pants, available solely in Black. A mix-and-match deal, the Sector racewear kits are based around those black pants and their $74.95 suggested retail. From there things quickly get interesting and colorful. With a Sector kit those black pants, available in sizes 28 through 48, can be matched with any of the Sector jerseys, and they’re available in choices of Black, Lime, Blue, Orange, and Red. Priced at $24.95 each, those jerseys are offered in sizes small through 3XL. Continuing on from there the Sector lineup has new glove designs in sizes XS through 2XL in all the same colors as the jerseys and priced at $19.95. Topping it all off are the new Sector, Sector Ricochet and Sector Covert

20

helmets. Helmets priced at just $109.95 and available in 11 different color combinations and sizes XS through 2XL. This gear is going to get noticed, and not just for those friendly prices. Coming from Thor this is racewear with nothing sacrificed when it comes to form, fit, function, features, comfort, or styling. Consider those Sector pants. Made with tough, abrasiontolerant materials double- and triple-stitched for durability, there are buckle closures and purpose-built TPR (Thermo-plastic Rubber) protection pads. The pants have athletic mesh liners and the chassis shape for all of this is pre-curved for maximum rider comfort. The same goes for the Sector jerseys, in any of those five available colors. There’s moisture wicking material to keep a rider dry, while the raglan-style sleeves offer optimal mobility. There are stretch panels in the cuffs and collars and a drop tail design helps keep the jersey tucked in. No-fade sublimated graphics and a heat-transfer neck label keep it all looking great.

THOR

Thor Sector gloves come in colors that match the jerseys.

Sector helmets come in a variety of colorways and designs.

The Sector gloves – available in Black, Lime, Blue, Orange and Red – feature fitted stretch backhand panels for lightweight comfort, perforated palms, notched wrist openings for easy-on/easy-off, and a hook-and-loop closure system. The Sector gloves have four-way stretch finger gussets, silicone printed palm graphics and wrapped thumb and grip points. And don’t forget about those new helmets. The Sector, Sector Ricochet and Sector Covert feature injection-molded polycarbonate/ABS shells and dualdensity EPS liners for enhanced and progressive impact absorption. There are also fully adjustable visors for great coverage, extensive venting and internal air passages for maximum cooling and a hi-flow mouth vent with a filter to prevent roost from entering. The DOT/ECE 22.05-approved helmets also have a flexible rubber nosepiece to further deflect roost. The helmet’s rear-shell shape allows for quick and easy repositioning of the goggle strap.

The Sector is available in Matte Black/White, Matte Blue/ Lime, Matte Blue/Red, Matte Navy/Yellow and Matte Black/Gray. Sector Ricochet choices are Navy/Blue, Navy/ Yellow, Navy/Orange and White/Gray. The Sector Covert is available in Matte Midnight and Matte Sand. While there’s plenty here to satisfy almost any taste, stylewise, all this Sector gear can be mixed-and-matched with other racewear in the 2018 Thor lineup for even more cool-look options. A Pulse Navy/Yellow jersey, for instance, at just $32.95, goes great with those Black Sector pants and the Navy/ Yellow Sector helmet. The Yellow/Black Conquer goggle is a nice addition to that kit. And the Pulse Blue/Red jersey teamed up with the Red/White Sniper goggle would be a good look with the Black Sector pants and Matte Blue/ Red Sector helmet.

that budget-priced Sector lineup. Talk with your Parts rep for details and check out www.thormx.com.

GARY SUTHERLIN RACER PROFILE

Stor y and photos by J o e Co lo mb e ro

1

I

f you don’t know who Gary Sutherlin is then pay attention because he’s one of the best riders in off-road racing these days. Sutherlin started out as a mechanic, and then raced as a privateer for almost a decade.

His years of hard work and training finally paid off with an AMA West Hare Scrambles Championship in 2013. Next he won the WORCS Championship in 2014, and went on to win the C2 Class and a Gold Medal at the ISDE. Throughout it all, Sutherlin juggled responsibilities as a single dad, raising his 6-year-old daughter Emerie, who travels with him to almost every event. Impressed? Wait until you hear this, Sutherlin is currently leading both the WORCS Series and the AMA Hare and Hound Series. The WORCS season wrapped up the first weekend in October, and the Hare and Hound has its season finale in November in Barstow, CA. If he can pull off both championships in a single season he will be the only rider since the late Kurt Caselli to accomplish the task. We had a chance to ride and talk with Sutherlin at the recent Thor new product intro. Now backed by Thor/Parts Unlimited

22

and riding for Team Purvines/DA8 Racing, Sutherlin is on the cusp of making off-road history. Parts Magazine: Looks like you’re on the verge of joining Kurt Caselli in the record books. Gary Sutherlin: Yes, I think Kurt is the only person in history to win both the WORCS and the Hare and Hound Series in the same season, so those are some big shoes to fill. It was my goal at the beginning of the year and it’s gone pretty well. I’ve had to ride with some injuries at some events. It’s been tough, but I’m not complaining. A lot more has gone my way then has gone wrong. So far it’s working out. What do you feel stronger with, WORCS or Hare and Hound? It’s kind of a toss-up. I feel I’m equally as good at both series. I like the WORCS tracks because their foundation is usually on a motocross track with an off-road loop tied into it. Hare and Hounds are a lot of wide-open across the desert races that aren’t the most fun, but you got to do it to win it. I look forward to the Hare and Hounds that are more up in the trees with less high-speed stuff.

1. Gary Sutherlin loves to moto, but his real talent is off-road racing. 2. Riding for Team Purvines/DA8 Racing, Sutherlin competes in the WORCS Series, the AMA Hare & Hound Series, Endurocross, and the ISDE. 3. Sutherlin is devoted to two goals, winning off-road titles and being a great father to his daughter Emerie. 4. Sutherlin’s off-road skills serve him well; he holds the points lead for both the WORCS and Hare & Hound Series. He’s hoping to win both titles in 2017, a feat last accomplished by the late Kurt Caselli.

Tell us about your deal with the new Purvines DA8 Racing Team? I’ve been talking to Ron (Purvines) for quite a few years, but we never could really get together. But it came together this year and I couldn’t be happier with the team and working with Destry (Abbott) and a great group of guys. We’ve meshed a lot of past champs and team owners, and turned it into a good team. Did the Thor deal come with the Purvines DA8 Racing team? Yes, and I couldn’t be happier because I’ve always loved Thor gear. Way back when I was a struggling privateer I used to wear Thor gear and I’ve been trying to get on the team for years, but it didn’t work out until now. Now I’ve finally got the chance to wear their gear and it’s great. I like the Prime Fit gear the best even though I’m a bigger guy. It works well because its light on the body and it fits tight. It’s important in off-road racing to wear gear that won’t snag on tree branches or bushes. At the end of races that can last several hours, lightness really pays off. Being comfortable, and able to stay cool and keep your core temp down, means you’ll have more energy at the end of a race that lasts two to three hours. At the races I have been fortunate to always have great people around to help with watching her. She loves being at the races playing in the dirt and cheering me on. She’s definitely the one person who can make any bad situation amazing and puts a smile on my face no matter what. The racing community is really is a huge family and we have been fortunate enough to travel and share some amazing memories. Do you see a time when Emerie will be out on the track riding and racing? I actually just bought Emerie a little KTM 50 mini for her 6th birthday. She loves riding and has a bunch of natural ability, but tells me at this point she doesn’t want to race which I’m fine with but I’m sure soon she will be out racing. Anything you’d like to add? I’m super thankful to be part of Thor and Parts Unlimited and Purvines DA8 Racing. I get to have a ride and race in a sport that I love. It’s awesome! ■

HELMETS

Lane Splitter

Top Fuel Styling, Radical Comfort After nearly three years of development and testing, the Biltwell Lane Splitter is ready for action.

T

here’s big news from Biltwell again. The Lane Splitter is their first helmet to receive both U.S. DOT and ECE R22.05 safety certifications. Both standards involve subjecting a helmet to violent forces across a range of impact angles and velocities. Sophisticated machinery collects data from these tests to determine the helmet’s ability to reduce these forces to improve the rider’s chance of surviving a crash. The EU’s ECE R22.05 is widely regarded as the highest safety standard for motorcycle helmets in the world. Creating one new helmet that does it all wasn’t easy, and took Biltwell’s product team and OEM factory years of R&D to get right. If early high praise on social media is a barometer of success, Biltwell’s new Lane Splitter looks poised to carve itself a solid chunk of the high-performance helmet market right from the start. With styling inspired by ’80s top fuel drag racers, the Lane Splitter’s advancements in fit, comfort and safety take Biltwell headgear into a whole new direction. To meet ECE and DOT safety standards, the Lane Splitter had to be tough. To

clear the brand’s own high bar for all-day riding comfort, it had to be light. To merge these opposing traits into one helmet, Biltwell relied on some triedand-true material and manufacturing technologies — an injection-molded ABS outer shell for durability, expanded polystyrene foam safety liner for impact absorption, and the softest hand-stitched fleece Lycra comfort liner in the game.

American bike riders jumped onto the tough guy style of the Lane Splitter as soon as Biltwell dropped it on a ravenous audience of wheelie-popping Dyna riders and other hooliganstyle riders.

Of course, the latter is removable for cleaning and replacement, and features mesh pockets in the cheek pads for aftermarket sound/communication speaker systems. Other features include a scratch-resistant molded polycarbonate shield with anodized aluminum hinge hardware, removable chin spoiler under the chin bar to redirect airflow, and ample front, side and rear venting to dissipate moisture when the action gets hot. ■

»» The Lane Splitter by Biltwell is available now

in seven racy colors — Flat Black, Bronze Metallic, Gloss Black, Gloss White, Flat Silver, Gloss Blood Red, and Flat Titanium—in XS through XXL sizes. Speak to your Parts Unlimited sales representative for more details, and visit www.biltwellinc.com.

Functional details on the Lane Splitter abound, and include front, side and rearexit ventilation for all-day riding comfort.

Biltwell’s line of Lane Splitter shields is comprehensive, and includes tint, gradient and mirror styles in nine different colors, including clear. Every shield is injection molded from impact-resistant polycarbonate plastic for strength and optical clarity.

Q&A

S P E C I A L

At the World Press Introduction of the Moose Racing brand in Colorado in 1994. Mike Collins (2nd from left) was there, as was Parts Magazine publisher Don Emde on the right.

MEET MIKE COLLINS

P

arts Magazine: Tell us a little bit about your background.

Mike Collins: I was born in the Midwest and my family moved to San Diego when I was 4 years old. I lived in San Diego until my mid-twenties when I decided to give the Midwest a try. I had always loved spending many of my summers there on my uncle’s farm. I loved that lifestyle. I started riding at 15, and started racing at 16. My first bike was a Honda CB92R, which was a domestic model 125 twin I bought from a sailor who had brought it back from Japan on an aircraft carrier. I promised my folks if they would buy it for me, I would never ride without a helmet. They did and I haven’t. Unfortunately my first crash was in front of our house when riding the bike home from purchasing it. I still can’t believe my folks allowed me to keep it after that. Outside of school, all I did was ride my dirtbikes and streetbikes. Once I got the racing bug, I couldn’t stop. I rode District 38 motocross and desert, as well as CMC motocross.

EIGHT QUESTIONS WITH LEMANS’ NEW PRESIDENT AND CEO

After returning to California in the early ’80s I resumed racing. Ultimately I ended up riding Over the Hill Gang and Old Timers motocross. My brother in law Wayne Cornelius and I started riding, and then racing in Baja. I put a lot of pre-run miles in Baja, and loved the riding and the people. I raced the Baja 1000 twice. Currently I own a 2002 Honda CR250 two-stroke. It’s an oldie, but still an awesome motorcycle. My streetbike is currently a Suzuki SV650s. I’m going to have to start looking for new bikes as my 19-year-old son has pretty much laid claim to my current ones. We also have a KLX110 that my 16-year-old twins share. What was your first position in the powersports industry? My first job in powersports was sweeping floors and threading spokes at Hallcraft Wire Wheels in El Cajon, CA. I was going to San Diego State College at the time, and was working part-time in my uncle’s automotive garage. A friend told me about the job at Hallcraft, and I couldn’t wait to apply for it. I couldn’t believe I would be working in the motorcycle industry.

S P E C I A L

From doing paperwork, I started doing a lot of the ordering for raw materials and components. I also handled a lot of walk-in customers and eventually dealers. As we grew, we hired people for those positions and I became the general manager. How long have you been with LeMans? I’ve been with Lemans for 24 ½ years. I was working as General Manager of Kawasaki of Riverside in Riverside, CA when the late Wayne Cornelius convinced me to talk to Fred on one of his trips to California. They needed buyers and since I had been the assistant purchasing manager for Malcolm Smith Products for a couple years prior to Kawasaki of Riverside, Wayne thought I should talk to Fred Fox. That conversation and the subsequent visit to Janesville convinced me that if I ever wanted to get back into the wholesale part of the business, I needed to be in Wisconsin. Fred gave me the tour of our Janesville facility and I was hooked.

From there I advanced to director of purchasing until Roger Dolan retired. At that time I became vice president of purchasing. What are your responsibilities in your new role as president and CEO? I see my main responsibility to be the team leader. No one person can run a company. It takes a hardworking, enthusiastic and capable team. We have that team in place. My job is to make sure we are going in the right direction and that we are making changes where changes need to be made. Just as important, we will work together to make certain the core values of our company do not change.

MIKE COLLINS

Eventually, the owner Marv Hall found out I could type and I started doing the UPS paperwork for all our shipments. Webco was one of our biggest customers at the time, as well as a lot of Chopper Shops.

F E AT U R E

What are your thoughts on efforts to bring a younger demographic of customer into the world of motorcycling? I’ve heard people say, “Kids these days would rather have a cell phone and a gaming station than a motorcycle.” I don’t believe that. They want both. I have teenagers and they are glued to their phones and games just like every other teenager. They still beg me to take them riding as often as possible. The key is introducing young people to the excitement of riding a motorcycle. I don’t believe it is any less thrilling for them than it was for us. We have to create and support those initiatives to help them experience it. What market segments hold the best promise for growth? I believe all segments hold promise for growth. Currently the obvious areas are the UTV market and the entry-level motorcycle market. The V-twin aftermarket, dominated by Drag Specialties, certainly still offers significant growth because of the number of used units in the marketplace. How important is the aftermarket for powersports retailers?

Collins’ riding history includes plenty of off-road racing, everything from District 38 motocross and desert racing, to running the Baja 1000 twice.

What positions have you held during your tenure at LeMans? I was hired as a buyer, specializing in off-road product since much of my experience was in that part of the market. As the company grew I became a senior buyer, and then a purchasing manager overseeing a group of several off-road product buyers.

The aftermarket is more important than ever. There are a huge number of used vehicles being sold in the marketplace and they all need parts and accessories. Not just replacement parts, but parts to personalize and customize them to their owner’s liking. We all need new bike sales, but it is the aftermarket that offers riders the ability to continually improve and update their bikes. I’m excited about the future for our industry. We have a lot of work to do but there’s nothing new about that. As Fred likes to say, “If it were easy everybody would be doing it.” ■

Built for The Ride

Gearing Up Against the Elements

I

con is still located in downtown Portland, OR, but a lot of riders these days have moved out to the suburbs. As daily commutes have gotten longer, the hyper-commuter has been born. It’s almost like a competition to see who can make the longest round-trip ride just to go sit in an office all day.

Icon’s new Tarmac jacket and gloves offer riders a simple, understated style combined with plenty of D3O armor and Level 3 waterproofing, meaning they can stand up to heavy rain.

The new Tarmac jacket and gloves are, according to Icon, perfect for today’s hyper-commuter, protecting riders from a variety of environmental onslaughts. The Tarmac jacket has a simple outward appearance, with a sleek design that is devoid of graphics. The blank chassis, available in black or grey, is constructed of a fourway stretch HYCOR waterproof and breathable material. Durable ballistic reinforcement panels are in just the right spots to provide a barrier in case of a spill. Whether you’re hyper-commuting to work or just cruising around, no one wants to show up at their destination soaking wet when the weather is bad. The chassis also boasts Icon’s Waterproofing Level 3, which means it can stand up to heavy rain thanks to waterproof materials and YKK Aquagard zippers. All of the seams are taped with Teflon DWR coating, too, so water can’t sneak in that way. For those warm days, armpit vents and a back exhaust port keep air flowing. A micromesh liner also helps wick moisture away from the rider’s body to keep everything cool. Icon’s Sport fit means that the Tarmac has slightly pre-curved arms, which is good for an aggressive riding position while still loose enough to allow mobility without excess bulk. D3O armor in the elbows, shoulder and back are ready for any impacts. The Tarmac’s elbows have three-position protector pockets for an adjustable fit. And if a rider winds up in the dark, reflective trim gives other motorists a heads up. The complementary Tarmac glove has the same understated look as the jacket and the same Waterproofing Level 3. The palm and fingers are made from cowhide leather for comfort and dexterity, while the stretch poly backhand keeps the glove lightweight. The knuckles have an added layer of resistance with a D3O knuckle insert. For those who need easy access to their devices, the index finger and thumb are touchscreen-enabled, too. The entire Tarmac glove ends with a mid-length under-cuff wrist closure system to provide a secure fit and to keep the elements at bay. ■

and equipment that will keep registers ringing come the 2018 sales season. For one dynamic weekend, the Expo serves as the epicenter of the LeMans universe as dealers, reps, vendors and LeMans support staff gather together. This inclusive weekend doesn’t just highlight powersports products; it also offers those in attendance valuable product education and sales training from the vendors themselves. This year’s show featured dealer training from such manufacturers and Parts vendors as Alpinestars, Biltwell, Dunlop, EPI, Icon, Klock Werks, Metzeler, Michelin, Moose Racing, and Seizmik. As this is the central event for the LeMans Corporation, the show also features the always-anticipated Night of the Stars, where the combined Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties sales forces are awarded and celebrated for a year of killer sales results. Make no mistake, this is a powerful group of reps and sales managers, and their stellar results are clear evidence of their importance to dealerships – and the vendors they represent – across the country. Given that this is the powersports industry, an event launched three years ago – the Saturday night Meet & Greet/Bike Show returned to much fanfare. In just three short years, the show, and its collection of custom bikes from Parts dealers, sales reps, vendors and LeMans employees, has emerged as one of the weekend’s more popular events. This year’s lineup included everything from ground-up custom cruisers and fully restored classic dirtbikes to an asphaltripping drag bike and an Indian Scout ice racer. Another crowd pleaser, now in its fourth year, was the Michelin Power Jam. Once again Parts and Drag reps and LeMans vendors and employees served up a healthy dose of good old rock and roll to a packed house at the nearby Majestic Theater.

T

he end of summer brings a buzz of excitement to the town of Madison, WI for a couple of reasons. Those last weeks of August mark the return of students to the University of Wisconsin for the beginning of the fall semester. That tail-end of summer also means that the eyes of the powersports aftermarket turn their focus to the state capital – and the Monona Terrace Convention Center – for a good long look at the products and programs that will be kick-starting dealership sales when the coming riding season begins. The Parts Unlimited NVP Product Expo offers dealers from around the country a hands-on first look at all the hot new products from more than 200 LeMans vendors. These are the very same parts, accessories, apparel, tools

Now that the calendars are quickly flipping over to 2018, Parts Unlimited dealers and vendors can look forward to one more chance to see the latest and greatest at the NVP Product Expo in Indianapolis in February before kicking off the sales season for another year. Talk with your Parts rep for details on attending the Indy show. This year, attending Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties dealers entered into a contest for hourly giveaways during the show, with products from such vendors as AFX, AirHawk, Arlen Ness, Avon, Hogtunes, S&S Cycle, and Star Brite. The winners were: CLAY SOWARDS — Barely Legal Bikes, Sioux Falls, SD JASON BARRY — Motorcycle Medic, Woodbine, IA PHILIP PARKER — Alvaton Store and Garage, Alvaton, KY ERIN WHITMORE — Eastern Performance Cycle, Gambrills, MD LISA JORGENSON — Jasper Enterprises, Sioux Falls, SD RANDY ERDMAN — Flying Eagle Motorcycles, Campbellsport, WI TOM DOROSKY — American Motorcycles, St. George, UT

hat’s the next best thing to getting trackside to watch some of the best riders in the world race the legendary Laguna Seca track in Salinas, CA? How about suiting up and taking on the track’s famous corkscrew in person? Why not both? That’s what a handful of Parts Unlimited dealers had the opportunity to do as part of the Pirelli/Parts Unlimited dealer ride day back in July. Qualifying dealers were treated to two tickets to the World Superbike race that weekend, with VIP hospitality, a VIP paddock tour, and a day of riding the famed circuit. The event followed Round 8 of the 2017 Motul FIM World Superbike Championship and MotoAmerica roadracing series. Not only did the dealers get to try their hand riding the track, they got to do so on a fleet of bikes from Aprilia, Ducati, Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Zero. All the motorcycles were mounted with Pirellis so that the dealers could learn first-hand the quality and variety of the company’s tires. In addition, Alpinestars and AGV helmets provided event space for the dealers as well as displays and demos of riding gear and helmets. With mechanics on hand to adjust

suspension settings and tire pressure, it was be like being a factory rider for a day. Parts Magazine had a chance to speak with Pirelli’s product manager Tyler Porter shortly after the successful event to learn the details of the Pirelli/Parts Unlimited Dealer Ride Day. Parts Magazine: How did dealers qualify to take part in the ride day? Tyler Porter: Parts Unlimited dealers were given the opportunity to participate in a sales program during the spring stock-up season. Participating dealers who sold 30 Pirelli tires in select tread patterns by the time the program concluded qualified. Tell us a little bit about how Parts Unlimited and Pirelli partnered to do this. Because of Pirelli’s relationship in the World Superbike Championship, we were granted access to the track on the Monday following the race. However, with any major motorsports event, it is always helpful to have partners to make a large event a success.

Parts Unlimited sales reps not only pushed sales in their areas to allow dealers to qualify for this exclusive event, but the Parts Unlimited event staff went above and beyond, as usual, to ensure that all attendees had an experience they will never forget with their industry-leading VIP hospitality area. What did the dealers experience as part of the ride day? What the Pirelli team really focused on was making the dealers feel like they were World Superbike riders for the day. Our dealers all received special parking passes, exclusive race tickets that included pit passes, and we also hosted a cocktail hour and dinner in downtown Monterey on Sunday night. We knew the track day is what they really traveled for, so on Monday the Parts Unlimited event staff had a perfect race day breakfast prepared for them and as soon as the track meeting concluded, we got them all out on the track. Alpinestars provided an event space for dealers that was simply above and beyond anything we expected. AGV helmets also had their full display set up to showcase their headwear. Our Pirelli race support truck was set up with our international technicians doing tire changes throughout the day, so our entire paddock area truly had that World Superbike race day feel. Why are dealer relationships so important to Pirelli? In the powersports industry, so many times it’s relationships that ensure sales goals are achieved; not only for us, but for our dealers as well. excellent product line, whether it’s our road race products, off-road line or even our performance oriented V-twin tires, our relationship with our dealers is a major focus with our sales and marketing teams. We have some very exciting things to offer dealers in 2018 that we are working on now that will ensure that we keep our relationships strong with our dealers. What new tires were you showing at the ride day? Last year we launched the Diablo Rosso III at the Laguna Track Day, complete with our lead testers and designers from Milan. This year we didn’t have a new product to launch, so we had the opportunity to let our dealers try a variety of tires. The majority of the bikes were fitted with our flagship trackday/hyper-sport street tire, the Supercorsa SPV2 to let the dealers see what our most premium track/street tire feels like in its native environment. Is there anything you’d like to add that we didn’t cover? The Pirelli team has learned a lot over the last few years hosting this event at Laguna Seca and each year we strive to improve the experience for our partners and dealers. We are already making plans for 2018, so we are already expecting a bigger and better event. Stay tuned for details! ■

AirCharging the RZR

A New Intake System for the Popular Polaris

R

ight from the start the Ranger RZR separated itself from the pack, and over the years Polaris kept upping the ante with bigger, faster and sportier machines. The current 168-horsepower ProStar Turbo models are a great example of how far those side-by-sides have come. There’s only one issue with that go-fast RZR and that’s the restrictive OE paper air-filter element and air box. Well, K&N has solved that problem with two new AirCharger air intake systems, one for the RZR Turbo models and one for select models of the naturally aspirated 1000 Series RZRs

acceleration throughout the entire rpm range. K&N testing showed a 4-plus horsepower jump on the Turbo RZRs and more than 35 mph added to the top-end speed. The RZR AirCharger systems are an easy installation, too. Typically it’s a job completed in 90 minutes or less, requiring only a ratchet set, a few wrenches, and a screwdriver. Servicing the AirCharger’s washable/reusable High Flow filter element is equally simple. The filter is protected from the elements with the new, and enclosed, AirCharger filter housing. And, when

K&N’s new AirCharger intake system for various Polaris RZR models is designed to give those side-by-sides a serious performance boost over the stock air filter and air box.

These systems completely replace that restrictive factory air filter element and the entire air intake housing. The result is more horsepower, better throttle response, quicker acceleration and, of course, greatly enhanced filtration and engine protection. The AirChargers are brand-new and they’re available now. Naturally, there’s a washable and reusable K&N High-Flow air filter element at work here – it’s a big part of the RZR AirCharger. Along with that filter there’s an all-new, freeflowing aluminum intake tube with all the clamps and couplers to totally replace the OE air box. The combination of those two pieces dramatically reduces intake restriction as it smooths and straightens airflow. With an AirCharger, the engine is allowed to breathe deep, which directly translates into performance and more usable power, better throttle response and improved

servicing does become necessary a separately available K&N Recharger Kit makes quick work of the job. An included spray bottle of Power Kleen dissolves any dirt build up and old filter oil, which can then be washed away with water. After the filter fully dries it’s re-oiled with the also-included K&N filter oil and reinstalled with all the airflow efficiency and filtration capability of an as-new/as-delivered filter. K&N is so sure of all this it backs that High Flow air filter element with a 10-Year/Million Mile Limited Warranty. The Polaris RZR, naturally aspirated and turbocharged, is one popular UTV. K&N’s AirCharger systems can make those machines perform even better. ■

Long Lasting and Tough Performing Tires

TIRES

Rugged Rubber

The Evil*SBR is the latest addition to AMS’s Evil line of UTV/ATV tires. It is steel-belted for endurance, and has a long-lasting tread life.

W

hen it comes to its mission statement, AMS Tire & Wheels stands by its pledge to develop and offer high quality specialty tires, inner tubes and wheels at competitive rates. It does so with a high level of expert service, striving to fulfill the market’s tire and wheel needs for ATVs and UTVs. Not long ago AMS introduced the all-new Evil line of UTV/ ATV tires, which offer outstanding handling and exceptional ride performance. AMS now introduces the newest edition to the Evil line of UTV/ATV tires, the Evil*SBR. Your customers will appreciate this outstanding allaround performer. The Evil*SBR was developed with a truck-tire-like tread in a non-directional steel belted 8-ply radial tire for a smooth ride and with a special longlasting compound for extended tread life. Even the best performing tire will be a disappointment if it doesn’t last. The Evil*SBR is built to last and take a beating along the way. Remember, the Evil*SBR has dual steel belts, which also helps make them highly puncture resistance. AMS’s new tire has a strong shoulder and sidewall tread that offers additional protection and traction in sand, dirt and rocks. This tire is designed to work well on multiple terrains and offers a great ride for any skill level operator. Plus, it is legal for on-road and off-road use. Although it was built with truck-tire technology, the Evil*SBR can operate at low tire pressures on UTVs – 12 PSI to 14 PSI – unlike the truck tires that are built to run

50-plus PSI. Being able to run at a lower tire pressure means additional traction in dry or slippery conditions. This tire also sports a strong aggressive look. AMS has given this tire all the newest technology needed for today’s most advanced side-by-sides, UTVs and ATVs. The Evil*SBR is available in 28 inches, 30 inches and 32 inches. AMS offers a full complement of tires, wheels and tubes for almost every make and model of ATV and UTV. The AMS Evil line, including the new Evil*SBR steel belted UTV/ATV tires, is now available through Parts Unlimited. ■

ake a look through the Parts Unlimited Offroad catalogs, and you will see a huge assortment of parts and accessories from Moose Racing.

Hard parts for off-road motorcycles were the first products available from the company when it got its start just over 30 years ago. During those three decades, though, Moose Racing has built a reputation as a producer of quality, durable off-road apparel that is built to last.

50

Moose Racing combines materials and styling to not only create durable, comfortable racewear, but to also produce apparel that stays on trend. Moose Racing’s designers have honed the fit of the company’s racing-centric chassis over the years, and these days changes are focused on small adjustments for durability and style. The M1 gear reflects a more form-fitting, athletic fit that is preferred by ultimate-performance-minded riders. The integrated stretch panels are best utilized with this kind of fit, allowing each piece to move comfortably with a rider’s body despite the more tailored styling.

Some of the latest apparel from Moose Racing is the M1 line of semi-ventilated jerseys and pants. Designed with hard riding in mind, the M1 pieces are ideal for motocross racers or trail riders.

Whatever the style trends may be, having racewear that lasts never goes out of style. Moose Racing designers opt for polyester and nylon materials that have a heavier gauge to better stand up to the flogging that riders put the gear through.

The M1 jersey is made of a semi-ventilated polyester with a V-neck collar. The quick-drying fabric draws moisture away from the skin quickly to keep the rider dry and comfortable. Stretch mini-cuffs keep the sleeves in place without being restricting, and the sublimated graphics are available in seven color schemes that all have matching pants. Sizing is from small to 3XL.

Triple-stitched seams, high-denier material in highabrasion areas, full grain leather panels and high-quality fasteners are all aspects that keep Moose race wear intact and ready for the next round. However, the higher quality does not translate to a higher price point, as pricing is kept at a competitive level.

Moose Racing’s M1 racewear is designed with hard riding in mind. The semi-ventilated gear helps keep riders cool and comfortable.

Moose Racing also has three new glove styles on deck, including the SX1, MX1 and MX2. All three of the styles have a pre-curved finger design for an ergonomic fit while riding and a size range of small to 3XL. The SX1 gloves have a polyester backhand that provides a lightweight stretch fit for maximum comfort and performance. A single layer of perforated Clarino covers the palms to provide airflow and improved feel, while a tacky grip print on the fingers and palm keeps a rider’s hands just where they need to be on the controls. Snow Bike racing is trending and Camso has a conversion kit for popular dirtbike models.

HOT TRENDS FOR COLD WEATHER

W

56

Story by Beth Dolgner

inter is coming, and that means it’s time to look ahead to the snow market. A few places in North America have already seen snow this year, even though the calendar claimed that it was, in fact, still summer at the time.

Jay Savignac says that the sales surge starts in October and will last through Christmas. “Those that are buying after Christmas are usually purchasing to replace,” he says. “They get their gear out in January when the trails start to open up and realize their jacket is trashed.”

Perhaps that is a good omen of things to come, since you can’t have a snow market without snow. As International Snowmobiling Manufacturers Association (ISMA) president Ed Klim says, “The greatest determinant of demand for snowmobiles is snow and cold weather. You can’t use the darn things if it doesn’t snow!”

With that in mind, dealers can market to new customers in the fall months, then target existing customers who need to replace or upgrade their gear after the New Year. Savignac adds, though, “In today’s economy, everybody is trying to save money where they can.”

The trends so far indicate a good sales season to come, with ISMA noting that the first sales reports show a slight increase over last year in snowmobile sales.

He anticipates Arctiva Pivot gear to be a popular seller this winter because it’s an affordable jacket and bib package designed as an entry-level option for new riders as well as riders who want to save money.

Of course, customers want to have their gear ready to go before the conditions are right. Arctiva brand manager

Saving a few dollars is something that riders want to do with everything, not just gear. “We believe gas prices will

remain relatively low and they should continue falling over the next few months,” says Klim. That’s nothing but good news for dealers, especially since 47 percent of snowmobilers have to load up a trailer and drive to their destination, according to ISMA. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that U.S. gas prices reached an average of $2.69 per gallon in September, but that number is projected to fall throughout the autumn months, with a forecast of $2.23 per gallon in December. Polaris reports that the trail riding segment of the snow market is still very healthy, thanks in part to the 213,000 miles of trails in North America. The company has also seen great growth in the mountain and crossover riding segments recently. ISMA agrees about the growth of mountain riding, and the number of groomed trails in the mountains is growing. Getting ready for mountain riding requires slightly different tools, since avalanches can be a threat and there are still fewer — if any — marked trails compared to other areas. This is a situation dealers can cater to, stocking supplies geared for those who prefer higher-altitude riding. Parts Unlimited carries some mountain riding gear, like the Snow Mover Shovel by SnowClaw, HMK’s whistle that works in all temperatures and Snobunje’s avalanche probe, which measures eight feet long when assembled. For

that crossover riding segment, companies like Camso sell conversion kits to turn dirt bikes into snow bikes for riders who want something a little different or a new challenge. Donna Beadle, senior external relations specialist for Polaris, says, “With snow bike racing added to the X Games last year, we are seeing more interest in the sport.” Camso, whose conversion kits are available through Parts Unlimited, began selling snow bike kits last year, and the company reports that it’s so far, so good. In addition to snow bike conversion kits, Camso’s ATV kits for 500cc and under sizes are a big seller, mostly because there is still a healthy dose of practicality in the market. “These vehicles are used a lot by hunter-fisherman, due to their retail price,” says Francois Jean, aftermarket sales manager of powersports for Camso. Jean is optimistic about providing snow kits for smaller-displacement ATVs, saying, “We think it should enlarge the market size. While some riders are out looking for food or fun, others just want to clear their driveway. Moose Utility Division’s RM4 front-mount plow system for both ATV and UTV applications is a perennial favorite, thanks in large part to its high ground clearance and ease of installation. While winter riding isn’t quite here yet, dealers can at least get products out the door to help customers prepare for the season. With positive markers for sales, all eyes are on the weather. ■

Early reports show an increase in snowmobile sales over last year. The 2018 Snow catalog is just the ticket for stocking up on the parts and apparel those riders will want.

Simplified Studding

System for Finding the Right Stud Length

S

nowmobile track studs are a necessity for better acceleration, braking and cornering in performance trail riding, and in most kinds of winter racing, as well as an absolute requirement for safe trail riding in icy, slippery conditions. Studs must be the correct length, with very little room for error, or serious problems can result. There’s just no bite if studs don’t sit at least a ¼-inch above the tip of the track lugs. However, studs that are too long, more than 3/8-inch over the tip of the track lugs, can damage the studs, the track and especially the vulnerable and all-important heat exchangers in the snowmobile cooling system. Additionally, over-long studs can result in disqualification of the machine in organized snowmobile racing. Unfortunately, conventional track stud nomenclature hasn’t always been easy to understand, so getting the correct length has been a challenge for the novice studder. Woody’s Traction Tips solves this problem with a system that is easy to understand and provides the proper stud length and part numbers for any installation. Woody’s simplifies studding with the stud series concept. The series number is the length from the top of the backer plate to the tip of the properly torqued track stud. It is also the number used in the part number. This length should not be confused with the overall length of the stud, as it does not include the remaining distance below the top of the backing plate to the head of the stud where the hex is located.

The 2018 Snow catalog features an informational page that helps dealers in choosing the correct studs and stud lengths.

the 2018 Parts Unlimited Snow catalog shows that any Woody’s 1325 series track stud will provide the correct stud length when installed on these tracks. So Woody’s Gold Digger® Traction Master® carbide stud for these tracks would be part number GDP6-1325. Part number suffixes A, B, C, and M indicate package quantities, while L and S represent appropriate nuts. Always review vehicle manufacturer studding recommendations in the owner’s manual before studding a track, and check for the presence or absence of tunnel protectors that are always required for track studding. ■

The oversized face foam features a barrier that fills the gaps between helmet and goggle frame to seal out freezing wind chill at any speed. The 100% Racecraft snowmobile goggles feature a vented lens for extra fog resistance and a large, soft and removable rubber nose guard to exclude frigid blasts and billowing snow. Outriggers help to achieve a perfect fit and balance on this premium goggle series. Assorted frame and strap colors allow color coordination or contrast, depending on individual taste.

100%’s Accuri goggles offer outstanding vision in tough winter conditions.

Sleek, clean 100% Accuri snowmobile goggles migrate from the motocross world to equip performance-minded snow riders. Some versions are available with vented lenses, and all Accuri models deliver outstanding vision in the toughest winter conditions. Again, assorted frame and strap colors allow coordination or contrast with any snowmobile gear. ■

ne of the hottest (or perhaps coolest) new competitions in powersports is snow bike racing. Using dirtbikes that have been outfitted with skis and tracks in place of wheels, this sport is growing rapidly in popularity in the snowy parts of the USA and Canada. There is even an AMA-sanctioned racing series and snow bike racing made its debut at the 2017 Winter X Games. One of the rising stars in the new sport is a 17-year old from Bismarck, ND by the name of Harris Huizenga. His dad is the owner of Full Throttle Motorsports and a Parts Unlimited dealer. Huizenga accomplished a lot in the 2016 – 2017 season. He qualified for the Winter X Games in Aspen, CO, where he was the youngest competitor and earned a respectable top five finish. Huizenga also picked up a sponsorship from Arctiva, which also sponsors the AMA Snow Bike Series.

Over on the inaugural AMA Snow Bike Championship Series, the high school student showed he could compete with the best in the sport by scoring a first place victory at Detroit Lakes, MN, plus another first place victory the following week in Hill City, MN. In other events, he was consistently a top ten competitor and is considered a contender for the championship. Parts Magazine had a chance to talk with Huizenga and Jay Savignac, the Arctiva brand manager, to learn more about the sport, Huizenga’s background and this growing market in powersports. Parts Magazine: For our readers who don’t know, what is snow bike racing? Jay Savignac: Snow bikes are dirt bikes with a ski and track, allowing them to be used on snow. They’re very popular in the west as it is easy to ride in powder. The

deeper the powder, the better. If you have ridden a dirt bike, then there is almost no learning curve to the snow bike. Most riders can just get on and go. It is very easy to stop in deeper powder, and the bike will stay balanced in the snow. You climb on and off from the back of the bike. It is gaining momentum recreationally nationwide. Harris Huizenga: I started riding snow bikes when my dad started selling them out of his shop (Full Throttle Motorsports). I’d been riding motocross and off-road since I was around 5 years old, and I played around with sleds (snowmobiles) in winter. The first time I got on a snow bike was about three years ago and I was instantly hooked. They’re a blast to ride. I started racing almost right away. Parts Magazine: Jay, who do you sponsor on snow bikes? Jay Savignac: Harris is our top rider. He’s an outstanding rider and a great representative of Arctiva. Jimmy Jarrett is a Moose Racing rider who competes in the AMA series as well. They partnered with Arctiva last season to test our new Vibe gear on snow bikes. Parts Magazine: Tell us about Harris and his potential as a future champion. Jay Savignac: Harris is a young rider who grew up in his father’s shop, turning a wrench or pushing a broom. He is a senior in high school this year, and is very humble and shy. He started competing in the AMA series this year, and as a result of his wins, he qualified for the X Games. He also competed in the Snocross series, taking first place in Lake Geneva, WI on March 18th, 2017.

Harris Huizenga (in black Arctiva gear) was consistently on the podium this season in the AMA Snow Bike Championship Series. He also qualified for and took part in the X Games.

Harris Huizenga: The X Games was awesome. It was cool to be in the first snow bike event at the X Games. This coming season I plan to race as much as possible, and do the AMA Series and go to X Games again. Right now I’m just glad to be racing and having fun one race and one season at a time. Parts Magazine: How does sponsoring racers like Harris help dealers and their customers? Jay Savignac: Feedback from Harris has been instrumental in designing the upcoming Vibe SB. This is a pant designed specifically for the snow biker, with leather inseams, Velcro closures at the ankle, and a lot of ventilation. Just seeing the Arctiva name on a young man like Harris has been influential, as Arctiva is a price point line with beginner riders among the target audience. In addition, an Arctiva branded pop-up tent is at the start/finish line at every event.

As a lifetime motocross racer, Harris’ dirt skills translated well to snow bike racing.

Harris ran No. 3 for most of 2017. He’s got the talent, work ethic and determination to lower that number in the near future.

Parts Magazine: Harris, how did you rise so quickly in such a new sport? Harris Huizenga: I started racing mini-moto when I was five and I still race motocross and off-road. Learning to ride the snow bikes was easy for me and gave me something to do in the winters. I crashed on the start of my first race, but I won the next race I entered. My favorite tracks are the ones with a lot of soft snow and big berms. Turing a snow bike is a lot different than a dirtbike so hitting a berm makes carrying your speed a lot easier. Jumping is different too. There is a lot of weight to lift up over a jump, not as much as a sled though.

The pop-up tent is also available to the local dealer on a first come, first serve basis, if they wish to bring Arctiva gear, gloves, layering, etc. to the event and promote actual sales onsite. Talk with your Parts sales rep for details on the pop-up.

N

ew model year snowmobiles are some of the most technologically advanced machines to hit the snow. Ski Doo’s 850 E-TEC and Arctic Cat’s 800 CTEC are two examples of next level two-stroke technology.

Wiseco has pistons for new model snowmobiles with technologically advanced two-stroke engines, including the Ski Doo 850 E-TEC and the Arctic Cat 800 CTEC.

These engines showcase technology such as highly efficient fuel injection and oil injection systems. Some even feature boost injectors, forged crankshafts and revolutionary starting systems. Pistons are vital parts of any internal combustion engine, and they can make or break the performance of the engine. With the consistent increase in technology in two-stroke snowmobile engines, Wiseco believes these feature-rich engine platforms should operate with feature-rich pistons. Available for 2018 Arctic Cat 800 CTEC and 2018 Ski Doo 850 E-TEC applications, Wiseco pistons offer reduced friction, quieter operation and added durability.

Each different Wiseco piston is precision forged from its own dedicated forging to accomplish high strength qualities for the aluminum. These snowmobile pistons are also Electra Coated, protecting the piston dome and ring groove against wear caused by heat and combustion. On the piston skirt, you’ll find ArmorGlide skirt coating, which is applied in-house and reduces friction, noise and scuffing caused by cylinder wall contact. A precision machined piston ring and ring groove tops off this piston package, ensuring optimum ring seal for reduced blow by and quick break in. Wiseco’s snowmobile pistons are made in the USA, and are tested and proven in actual snowmobile racing applications. ■

Introducing Tech-Air

Airbag Protection for Street or Track Fully sealed to ensure all-weather performance, Tech-Air’s ECU – which houses the system’s ‘brain’, and its sophisticated algorithm that has been refined during hundreds of thousands of miles of road testing and a multitude of full-scale crash tests – is guaranteed to function in extreme cold or heat.

The Tech-Air airbag system is designed to fit discreetly under a compatible riding jacket or leather suit. It provides protection for the most exposed areas of the body in a crash — chest, shoulders, kidneys and back.

The Tech-Air Street and Tech-Air Race Offer:

A

lpinestars’Tech-Air is an advanced active electronic motorcycle airbag system. Its technology offers full upper body coverage with protection from the first impact in a crash, giving riders and passengers high levels of protection and reliability. Developed following more than 15 years of extensive R&D in airbag technology, Alpinestars’ Tech-Air is a completely self-contained, independent airbag system providing full upper body protection to the most exposed areas of the body in a crash — chest, shoulders, kidneys and back. Being self-contained means Tech-Air can be used in conjunction with a range of compatible outer garments, from racing leather suits and leather jackets to textile and touring jackets. It can also be used interchangeably without the need to re-configure any bike settings. The stand-alone system can be used with any motorcycle and for all types of riding. Tech-Air is available to customers in two versions, Tech-Air Race and Tech-Air Street. The Street version was developed for road riding while the Race system is designed for the track environment. Both versions offer protection in a variety of situations, from loss of control scenarios to crashes involving obstacles. Tech-Air connects to the outer garment via internal micro USB connector cables and the system’s functioning status is conveniently indicated by an LED display on the lefthand sleeve. To switch Tech-Air on and off just close the suit or jacket. With both Tech-Air system versions there is no bike-torider set-up required and no need for bike-mounted sensors or GPS. All Tech-Air sensors and electronic control unit (ECU) are securely incorporated into the vest, which fits seamlessly under the compatible outer garment.

FULL UPPER BODY PROTECTION: Both Street and Race systems incorporate extensive upper body coverage, covering all of the most exposed areas during a crash – chest, shoulders, kidneys and back. FIRST IMPACT PROTECTION: Using purpose-designed algorithms, Tech-Air Street and Race are specifically developed to provide critical airbag protection for the primary contact between the rider and the obstacles or vehicle impacted. This is critical and differentiates TechAir’s capabilities in providing protection for the first, typically most significant, impact. HIGH AND LOWSIDE PROTECTION: In November 2014, Alpinestars launched Tech-Air Street, which offered first-impact protection expressly in street and off-road riding situations using exclusive custom analysis software tailored to detect both high and lowside impacts with the greatest precision. INDEPENDENCE: Tech-Air Street and Race are completely independent, stand-alone, full upper body airbag systems that offer extended critical airbag protection with no physical or electronic connections between the rider and bike and no reliance on GPS systems. PERFORMANCE RIDING: In February 2016, Alpinestars launched Tech-Air Race, with an exclusively developed algorithm optimized for racing and performance riding. The Race version has a patented dual charge system that offers the rider two air bag inflations without need to recharge the system (excluding the 2XL sizes), exactly the same technology used by Alpinestars racers in MotoGP and World Superbike racing. The Race version can additionally be configured, via a firmware update, to run the Street settings for the ultimate in versatility, allowing customers to ride on both road and track with optimal protection. ■

Sturdy Transportation System for Firearms Moose Utility Division has a number of UTV and ATV mounting options for its new Gun Defender Transport System.

M

oose Utility Division already produces a variety of transport systems for firearms, as seen in the Parts Unlimited 2017 ATV & UTV catalog. Now, the options have grown with the Gun Defender Transport System and mounts.

1¼-inch or 2-inch receiver hitch. Like the UTV Bed Mount System, the easy installation and adjustment make the piece convenient for occasional use. A stabilization arm adds rigidity to the solid mount, and all necessary pieces are included to mount two Gun Defender Transport Systems.

The Gun Defender Transport System is designed to keep firearms safe and secure, even when put up against the elements and rough terrain. Each Gun Defender case has an injection-molded design that offers great strength coupled with water and dust resistance. The design accommodates both standard and longer-barreled guns, while additional width in key areas eliminates interference with bolts and target-style turrets.

The One ATV Rack Mount System carries one Gun Defender Transport System, and its design fits nearly all makes and models of ATVs. The system mounts to tubular and composite racking, and like the other mounts, it offers adjustable components for a custom setup. In fact, the user can select their ideal angle, and the mount rotates in 90-degree increments.

The hybrid interior allows customization so that a tailored, secure fit is provided. On the back end, a wider opening makes inserting and retrieving a firearm easier. Moose Utility Division has several mounting systems available that fit the Gun Defender Transport System. The One UTV Bed Mount System is a truly universal design — it reportedly fits all UTV beds. Quick installation and adjustments make it easy to mount or remove as needed, and the highly adjustable design enables plenty of configuration options. The system has a width adjustment from 26 inches to 56 inches, and the mounting system locks down with included turnbuckles and D-rings. Also included are all necessary pieces to mount two of the Gun Defender Transport Systems.

Check with your Parts rep and the Parts Unlimited catalog for a full list of Moose Utility Division’s firearm transportation options, including a gun boot as well as a variety of single and double gun racks for both ATV and UTV applications. Crossbow carriers and bow racks are also available. ■
