Next Steps For Coaching by D on Em de

B
ack in November I got a first hand look inside the operations of the groundbreaking nonprofit United States Motorcycle Coaching Association when it held its first media workshop at its headquarters in Temecula, CA. The purpose of the workshop was to provide the media with an update of the progress of the year-old organization as it moves from its Level 100 phase and the certifying of its first 100 USMCA coaches. Additionally, the workshop included an interactive working session to help shape Level 200 certification and future plans of the USMCA. The vision of the USMCA makes great sense: “Establish a network of skilled, certified coaches providing coaching, encouragement & support that fosters growth in the sport of motorcycling. Coaching is carried out by qualified people who work with clients to improve their effectiveness, performance and help them achieve their full potential. For those not familiar with the USMCA, the credibility of the organization is easily apparent with its impressive list of leaders. The
three founding board members—1971 500cc Motocross National Champion and AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Mark Blackwell, recently retired KTM North America president Jon-Eric Burleson (son of ISDT and AMA Enduro legend Dick Burleson) and former AMA Motocross and Supercross champion, turned TV broadcaster Jeff Emig—were all in attendance at the workshop, as were two of its Coaching Representatives—Motocross/Supercross veteran Nathan Ramsey and former professional roadrace star Chris Ulrich. Parts Magazine supports the mission of the United States Motorcycle Coaching Association. Watch for more behind the scenes updates in future issues. Whole neighborhoods were submerged by floodwaters. “It was the most surreal thing I’d ever seen,” says Parts Unlimited dealer Kevin Lackey.
Stepping Up and Giving Back
Freedom Powersports regional manager Chase Vance helps unload some watercraft at the site of some serious flooding.
TEXAS DEALER TAKES ACTION WHEN DISASTER STRIKES By Dennis Johnson / Photo courtesy of Freedom Powersports
W
hen Kevin Lackey bought his first dealership in 2012, he knew he wanted to build his business around five core values — hard work, team work, integrity, discipline and the idea of giving back.
Now that he’s grown his Fort Worth, Texas-based dealership group, Freedom Powersports, into 14 locations across three states, he says those five ideals are a mantra for his company. The Parts Unlimited dealer points out that the last one, giving back, is especially important for his stores. “On my priority list, it’s probably more important than being at the local races on Friday night,” he notes. “Giving back to the community that supports us is essential.” So, when Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas coast in August, Lackey had the opportunity to put those values into action on a grand scale. Although none of his dealerships were affected by the tropical cyclone battering the Houston area, he did have family in the hurricane’s path. Kevin Lackey
Monitoring the action from his headquarters about four hours away from the hardest hit regions, it soon became apparent that something truly devastating was happening as flood waters rose dangerously and quickly. As the situation grew more dire, Lackey says it really hit him hard that in addition to his family, there were a lot of people in harm’s way.
The thought that something more needed to be turned into an obsession. He decided to take action and over dinner with his family he told his wife his plans. “I told her we can take some Jet Skis and boats and see how we could help,” he says. With his wife’s blessing, Lackey called up one of his regional managers, Chase Vance, told him he was heading out at 7 p.m. that night and asked if he wanted to help. Vance agreed without hesitation and the two headed out to load up hip-waders and other gear. The two of them headed to his dealership, and picked up some personal watercraft, about 20 jugs of fuel and headed down to Houston. “It was the right thing to do. If we had the ability to help, and the wherewithal to help, why were we not down there,” he says. Cruising along the flooded streets, they found themselves having to limbo under power lines and realized they were scooting across the top of submerged cars. “It was crazy. There was a moment when I told myself this is the most surreal thing I’d ever seen,” he says. “We were riding around and it was getting dark and we were yelling for people. The water level had risen to the second floor of some homes. I was yelling, ‘Hello, is there anyone there.’ And it would just be eerily silent.” As he and Vance passed through flooded neighborhoods, they could see into open garages where cars were under water with the dome lights on and doors open. This was an indicator that people thought they could get away, he says, but the flood waters came so fast, the authorities ordered them to gather in the second floors of their houses. continued on page 14...

We were launched in one area of Kindwood and ... all you could see was water, “ Lackey says. “Then, ahead a bit, we saw these things in the water, we thought they were people swimming.” When they got closer, they realized they were the tops of streetlights poking through the water’s surface. Lackey and Vance worked tirelessly for three days, sleeping only minimally before rejoining the efforts. Dog tired, they headed back home where Lackey says he was grateful to see his family. Now a few months after the flooding, Lackey has had a chance to reflect on the whole thing. He points out that Vance deserves special recognition for his role, saying that he didn’t even think twice before stepping up to help out. “It makes me proud, what we did and what other people did. Nobody was posting anything on social media. It was very gratifying,” Lackey notes. “It makes me think about what you can do more often, not just when something bad happens, to be able to help your community. That’s important to me as an organization. We don’t need to be recognized. It’s just something we felt we needed to do.” ■

Parts Unlimited to Exhibit at AIMExpo NEXT SHOW SLATED FOR LAS VEGAS
P
arts Unlimited and its sister company, Drag Specialties, will join the American International Motorcycle Expo as an exhibitor, first at its 2018 show in Las Vegas, and then in 2019 in Columbus, Ohio.
The global parts and accessories distributor will join the greater powersports industry as a vital addition to the five-year-old powersports tradeshow. Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties and their host of brands extend the lineup of exhibitors represented at AIMExpo presented by Nationwide as the first major distributor, a key category important for continued growth of the show. “Parts Unlimited has deep roots in the industry and it’s pivotal to be among our peers to assess the health of the sport and industry, while also creating the opportunity to make connections with new and existing dealers and vendors,” said Mike Collins, president and CEO of LeMans Corporation. “The MIC-produced event provides a highly important place for powersports businesses to come together.”
According to Larry Little, vice president and general manager, MIC Events, post-show research identified that meeting with distributors is a major reason that dealers attend the event. “In just over five years, AIMExpo presented by Nationwide has established itself as North America’s annual gathering place for all of powersports,” Little said. “The addition of iconic distributors Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties signifies the platform’s value and importance for all industry constituents.” ■

he Powersports industry knows that winter is no time to close up shop and wait out better weather, not when the coming sales season is only a couple calendar pages away.
Instead, everyone from dealers to aftermarket manufacturers uses that seasonal lull to get things in place for when customers are ready to rip and ride as soon as the weather’s ready. For 2018, Parts Unlimited’s Spring NVP Product Expo is just the place to see the hottest new products from some of the industry’s leading brands. The NVP returns in February to Indianapolis in a new location — the Indiana Convention Center — with a show that boasts a 50 percent larger footprint, an expanded list of vendors, new product presentations and a host of in-depth dealer training sessions. Dealers gathering in the Circle City for the 2018 Expo can expect to check out all of the new street and off-road products that will be lining dealership shelves come spring. The show allows for the time to get detailed information about new apparel, accessories and hard parts from the manufacturers themselves. The 2018 spring show even features the always-popular product training seminars from vendors such as Alpinestars, Dunlop, J.W. Speaker and Seizmik. These sessions are always a wealth of product information and help gain the type of insider information that helps ramp up sales.

TIRES
P R O D U C T
S H O W C A S E
Every-Day Sport
A Tire Ready for Anything
I
f you haven’t had a look at the Michelin Power RS now is the time. Released just a few months ago, the Power RS is the new top-of-the-line Michelin in the sport-tire category. Alongside the Pilot Power and Pilot Power 2CT it fills out Michelin’s sport-tire lineup, offering all riders with all riding styles and budgets a Michelin choice. The Power RS is replacing the popular Pilot Power 3, which will be phasing out over the next few months.
The Power RS delivers all the important features sport riders want – strong grip in cornering, acceleration and heavy braking; light, agile feel; high-speed stability; and that precise handling known to many as flickability. They also perform well in wet conditions.
Beginning with a clean slate, the Power RS was designed to excel in all the important categories sport riders look for in a tire. They want a strong grip during fast cornering, hard acceleration and heavy braking; a light, agile feel; straight-up/high-speed stability; and that almost un-definable sense of precise handling known to many as flickability. The Power RS delivers on all counts. Michelin has labeled the Power RS a “perfect sport tire”. At a glance the Power RS appears to be barely streetlegal race rubber. The short-groove/semi-slick tread patterns will do that. But appearances are deceiving. Sure, these tires are tilted heavily towards their dry-weather performance, the kind of riding sport riders do most of the time. However, that near-slick/variable-groove tread pattern is found on all-new functional polymer Styrene Butadine Rubber dual-compounds, compounds that help maximize wet grip on the straights with no compromise on dry pavement. The Power RS has plenty of wet-surface capability. In fact, Michelin testing has shown these tires to out-perform

the already-exceptional wet grip of the Pilot Power 3, which the Power RS replaces. Bottom line: Power RS Michelins are sport-oriented road tires, great for track days, but they’re designed and built for performance in all conditions, wet or dry. Carcass construction, along with that new compounding, plays a big role in all of this. Two of Michelin’s main
performance technologies, ACT+ carcass architecture and 2CT and 2CT+ Dual Compounding are included in the Power RS. ACT+, Michelin’s Adaptive Casing Technology, reduces the tire’s maximum rigidity in the crown area while maintaining rigidity in the sidewalls and shoulder areas. The results are more straight-line stability and minimal drifting in the curves. The 2CT and 2CT+ compounding employs a durable 100 percent Silica center-tread compound coupled with 100 percent Carbon Black compounds on the shoulders. The payoff here is a light, confidence inspiring feel, strong straight-line and lean-angle stability, great wear resistance in the center areas of the tread and significantly enhanced dry grip on the shoulders. There are Power RS fronts and rears for everything from the smallest sport machines like the Yamaha R3 or new BMW S310, to the biggest bruisers at the top of the heap. ■

unleash your full potential!
Exceptional performance, on wet and dry roads Third-party commissioned testing1 and Michelin internal testing2 demonstrate that the MICHELIN® POWER RS tire is the leader in five categories that define a true sportbike tire dry performance: grip, acceleration, braking, handling and flickability. MICHELIN POWER RS tires also improve upon the already exceptional wet grip of the MICHELIN Pilot Power 3 tire by 3 seconds3, and they are available for an extensive range of sportbikes from Parts Unlimited.

AUDIO SYSTEMS
Music for Metrics
Universal Handlebar Audio Kit The MA4-BT universal kit from Metrix Audio lets riders add music, radio and GPS instructions to a number of powersports vehicles, everything from motorcycles to UTVs.
The KVR speaker power kit is specifically designed for Kawasaki’s Vaquero and Voyager.
W
hen the popularity of metric cruisers began to soar, Parts Unlimited knew that there would be a big demand for audio systems that fit them. The company turned to Hogtunes with the request for a universal handlebar audio system that could fit any and all metric applications. Since Hogtunes caters primarily to the Harley-Davidson market, it was decided that a separate, sister entity was needed for the new universal audio system. Metrix Audio was born. After the first handlebar system was introduced, Metrix Audio expanded to include speakers for specific applications and, now, handlebar kits designed to fit specific models and even aftermarket fairings. But even with all of the options, the original MA4-BT universal kit still takes center stage at Metrix Audio.
38
The MA4-BT has two custom speaker pods that each house dual two-inch speakers. The dual speaker design keeps the speakers from being too big, while still allowing clear, high-volume sound that will not get drowned out by road noise. For riders who want to integrate their other on-the-go gadgets, an additional wired auxiliary input allows the addition of a GPS or satellite radio so that all audio output is channeled through the MA4-BT. The amp/controller also has a high-level audio output, which gives the ability to run external amplifiers and more speakers with ease. The main components of the MA4-BT are easily adaptable for custom installations, further solidifying the kit’s status as a truly universal audio solution. The kit can stand up to the elements, too, since it is completely waterproof.
The MA4-BT features a 50-watt amplifier that has a built-in Bluetooth wireless technology receiver/controller, and it is all housed in a compact little package that mounts to the handlebars. If the supplied clamps that fit 7/8-inch, 1-inch or 1¼-inch handlebars won’t work for an application, the threaded inserts on the back of the amp/controller and speakers are RAM Mount compatible.
Metrix Audio speakers have a 5-year warranty period from the original purchase date for the original owner. The company’s amplifiers have a 3-year warranty.
This means that the Metrix MA4-BT goes far beyond the typical metric bike applications. The kit can also be easily mounted to ATVs, UTVs, golf carts and other vehicles that might need some amped-up sound.

From Racing to Rain Gear A Range of Off-Road Options
M
oose Racing offers a range of versatility across riding styles, price points and graphics choices. Racers and off-road riders can opt for gear that includes the affordably priced Qualifier line, while adventure touring riders have options that include the XCR waterproof pullover jacket and the lightweight XC1 rain jacket. Moose Racing says its Qualifier line is a best seller thanks to its entry-level price point, catchy graphics and broad sizing options. Qualifier jerseys go all the way from small to 5XL, while both the standard and over-the-boot pants range from 28-54-inch sizes. The Qualifier is available in six color schemes for both the jerseys and standard pants, including red/black, red/white/blue, blue/white, orange/black, black/hi-viz, orange/hi-viz and Stealth, which is the black and white option. The over-the-boot pants are available in black so that they coordinate with all of the jersey options. The updated Qualifier jersey has a generous cut and raglan sleeves for a full range of motion. The polyester chassis has high-quality sublimated graphics that will retain their color wash after wash. The spandex collar, neck
taping and non-restrictive stretch mini cuffs combine for a comfortable fit and finish. Both styles of the Qualifier pants are made of a polyester chassis with double-stitched seams and a pre-bent ergonomic design. The knees are reinforced with a high-denier nylon. The high-quality sublimated graphics are breathable to provide style that doesn’t stifle, and the colors are designed to retain their brightness over time. The standard Qualifier pants have molded graphics and leg badges for roost deflection. Meanwhile, the over-theboot pants have a zippered leg opening and a three-point waist adjustment system for easy tailoring. Spandex stretch panels ensure that everything moves easily during a ride. The over-the-boot pants also have an oversized knee area for maximum movement on the bike. Moose Racing also has two options for adventure touring riders who are out in the rain, chilly temperatures or the dreaded combination of wet and chilly weather.

XCR pullover jacket
The XCR line of performance gear now includes the XCR pullover jacket. The nylon stretch shell chassis is waterproof, windproof and breathable. High-denier nylon in critical wear areas make the jacket more durable, too. Waterproof seam sealing plus a durable water repellant coating are further steps to keep the elements at bay.
Additionally, Moose Racing has the XC1 rain jacket, a lightweight option that is also waterproof and windproof. The laminated nylon shell is seam sealed, while mid-weight nylon panels in the shoulders and elbows add durability. A fixed rear vent ensures that air keeps moving so things don’t get hot and steamy inside.
The cut of the XCR pullover jacket is sized so that it will fit easily over gear. The ergonomic sleeve design with stretch panels creates a comfortable, no-bind fit. Further adjustment points at the cuffs, collar and mid-waist allow a rider to tailor the fit so the jacket isn’t flapping in the breeze or letting water sneak in. A double front zipper flap and a microfiber-lined collar add to the protection against the elements.
The interior has a perforated poly mesh liner that wicks moisture to further increase comfort. Four pockets — two on the outside and two on the inside — have zippers for secure stowage. The collar, hem and cuffs are all adjustable.
Of course, layers can get hot, especially when riding hard, so Moose Racing has built in multiple zippered vents for maximum temperature regulation. Pit zip vents and a back vent keep the air flowing without letting in water.
MOOSE RACING
XC1 rain jacket
Both the XCR pullover jacket and the XC1 rain jacket are available in sizes SM to 4XL. The rain jacket also comes in youth sizes 5/6 to 14. ■
»» Talk to your Parts Unlimited rep for more details on Moose Racing gear, or head online to check out www.mooseracing.com.
And speaking of zippers, while the pullover jacket is just that, it does have a ¾-length center zipper that is big enough for a rider to slip the jacket on even while wearing a helmet. Full-length arm zippers make it easier to put on while already geared up.
Qualifier over-the-boot pant The Qualifier over-the-boot pants have a zippered leg opening and a threepoint waist adjustment system for easy tailoring. They also have an oversized knee area for maximum range of motion.
On the exterior of the XCR pullover jacket, 3M Scotchlite retro-reflective graphics at the front of the shoulders and on the back lend visibility, while pockets come in the form of two front hand pockets and one large back pocket. That back pocket actually serves as a self-storage option. The entire jacket can be rolled up and stuffed into the back pocket, then worn around a rider’s waist via an included webbing belt system. It offers an easy on-the-go option for changing weather conditions.

arts Unlimited has a long history of sponsoring and supporting the sport and 2017 was no different. This year the company sponsored hundreds of riders, races and series at all different levels and disciplines. Here’s a roundup of how some of the top Parts Unlimited pro riders performed in 2017.
Supercross and Motocross Thor’s Marvin Musquin had a good year, finishing third in the points chase for the 450cc Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, and taking second in the 450cc class points in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Nationals. Most riders would consider that a huge success, but Marvin doesn’t like anything less than first place. So, he came to the Monster Energy Cup ready to exact his revenge and win a nice bonus beside. By the end of the weekend, Marvin had won all three main events to earn one of the biggest cash purses in

motorcycle racing, the million dollar grand prize for the 2017 Monster Energy Cup title. Picking up a check for $1 million isn’t a bad way to finish off a season of racing. In the 250cc classes, Star Racing Yamaha found a new leader in Thor’s Aaron Plessinger. Plessinger is the son of multi-time GNCC Champ Scott Plessinger, and grew up racing motocross and off-road. He followed that talent to the Supercross and Motocross National stages. Plessinger got better as a pro, as he was named AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross Rookie of the Year in 2015. This season he scored some victories in Supercross and motocross, finishing third in the 250cc Supercross West, and fourth in the 250cc National Motocross Championship. We suggest keeping an eye on this lad, as his talent is going to take him to multiple titles in the future.

Arenacross
Off-Road
Moose Racing/Babbitt’s/Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Gavin Faith won the Arenacross title in 2016 and came out swinging in 2017. After falling behind early in the season to Jace Owen, Faith charged through the second half of the series to come back to win the final event and the title.
The big news in off-road this year was Thor’s Gary Sutherlin. Here’s the scoop on Gary, an off-road racing privateer for almost a decade. He steadily improved and won an AMA West Hare Scrambles Championship in 2013. Next he won the WORCS Championship in 2014, followed by the C2 Class and a Gold Medal at the ISDE.
In the final event, Faith not only stood atop the podium with the overall victory, but he also put the finishing touch on his second straight Arenacross title and hoisted the Ricky Carmichael Cup for the second consecutive year. When the final points for the season were tallied, Faith finished 10 points ahead of Owen. He’s the first back-to-back titleholder since Tyler Bowers in 2013 and 2014. He also gave Team Babbitt’s Kawasaki its seventh title in the past eight seasons.
This season Sutherlin, riding for Team Purvines/DA8 Racing and backed by Thor/Parts Unlimited accomplished the nearly impossible task of winning two major Off-Road titles in the same season – taking WORCS Series Championship and the AMA Hare & Hound Series Championship. In the long history of both series, only the great, late Kurt Caselli was able to win both titles in the same year. In 2017, Sutherlin put together two victories and four podiums to clinch the 2017 WORCS Championship, taking the title by more than 20 points.

Just two weeks later, Sutherlin got his second victory (along with four podiums) of the AMA National Hare & Hound Series to clinch title. Either big win is a great accomplishment, getting both in the same season is amazing!
In May 2016, Destry was diagnosed with Leukemia and 2017 was the year Destry was declared in remission. While Destry has not been cured, and still takes treatments regularly, the more time that passes in remission, the better.
Another standout rider on the Team Purvines/DA8 Racing crew is Cooper Abbott, son of Destry Abbott. Cooper has been off-road trail riding most of his life.
The good news for all his fans is that he has returned to offroad racing. He’s still not back to 100 percent, but he’s strong enough to win the vet expert class in several WORCS races, and to compete in and win the Vet class in the Endurocross Series. He also keeps busy as the coach/manager of the Purvines/DA8 Racing Team.
He only started racing a few years ago and is already in the pro ranks. In 2017 Cooper won three WORCS races in the Pro 2 Lights class. He added three podiums to that score as well as more top five finishes taking third in the points standings. He also competes in the Pro class in Endurocross and is training for the ISDE in the future. Destry Abbott is one of the all-time greats of off-road racing. He is best known for winning multiple AMA Hare & Hound Championships, as well as several Best in the Desert titles, and has seven ISDE Gold Medals to his credit.

Road Racing Jake Gagne dreamed of becoming a motocross star until his father signed him up for a try-out for the Red Bull AMA Rookies Cup (a sort of “star search” for new road racers.) It was a rapid transition from motocross to road racing, as he won the 2010 title in only his second season.

RACE REPORT 4
Gagne went on to win the AMA Pro Daytona Sportbike title, and in 2015 he became Moto America Superstock 1000 champion. For 2017 he was contracted to ride a Honda CBR1000 with support from American Honda and sponsorship by Genuine Broaster Chicken and Parts Unlimited in the Moto America Superbike class. For Gagne, 2017 has been a very interesting year. In addition to competing in Moto America Superbike events, he travelled extensively to race in several World Superbike events as Honda’s top “fill-in” rider, first as a replacement rider for Nicky Hayden at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and again for the injured Stefan Bradl at Magny-Cours in France. He even raced the World Superbike Championship finale in Qatar on the Red Bull Honda CBR1000RR SP2. Gagne was hot and cold with his Moto America Superbike season, scoring some top 10 finishes, sometimes just off the podium. Racing two Superbike series in a single season, testing and setting up multiple bikes and learning new tracks takes a lot of energy and stamina and Gagne stood up and performed. With more races, testing, and track experience under his belt, it’ll be fun to watch his progress in 2018.

Snow Bike Moose Racing’s Jimmy Jarrett switched to snow bike racing this year and represented himself nicely. The multi-time GNCC and OMA Off-Road National champion, who is also a six-time ISDE gold medalist, ended up winning the 2016 Flashpoint National Snow Bike Championship Series, a precursor to the new AMA Snow Bike Series. That win earned him an entry into the 2017 Winter X-Games where he put on a good show with a top ten finish. Not bad for a 40-year-old trying out a new sport. Arctiva-sponsored Harris Huizenga is another snow bike racer who accomplished a lot in 2016-2017. He qualified for the Winter X Games in Aspen where he was the youngest competitor, and put on a good show earning a respectable top five finish. In the inaugural AMA Snow Bike Championship Series, Harris scored a first place victory at Detroit Lakes, MN, plus another first place victory the following week in Hill City, MN. In other events he was consistently a top ten. He’ll be aiming for multiple titles this winter of 2017-2018. ■

HELMETS
Fog-Free Vision
Icon and Pinlock Team Up Pinlock-ready shields are now an option for Icon’s broad range of helmets, including the understated yet flashy Airframe Pro Quicksilver.
option is the really trick one, because it has photochromatic technology built into it.
Pinlock insert lenses help keep the view fog-free, and come in a variety of tints, everything from clear to a photochromatic version that transitions from clear to dark smoke as necessary.
I
con’s helmet graphics are pretty much the motorcycle equivalent of someone waving their arms and shouting, “Look at me!” So, it’s understandable that it can be easy to overlook one of the newest hightech options on the company’s helmets — Pinlock-ready shields that are compatible with Pinlock insert lenses. Pinlock insert lenses are ideal for keeping the view fog-free across a range of temperatures and weather conditions, and they mount tightly inside the Icon Pinlock-ready shield thanks to a custom molding and pins that hold everything in place. Mounting is easy; a slit in each side of the insert slides over the corresponding pin on the visor, and that’s it.
54
The sun-reactive technology in the Protectint insert lens automatically transitions from dark smoke in full sun to crystal clear at night, and every shade in between as the weather and light level fluctuates. That means no more debating whether to put a clear or tinted shield on for a ride, and no more hauling around additional shields when on a day-to-night ride. The Protectint lens is created by sandwiching a UV-sensitive photochromatic film between layers of premium quality polycarbonate. Those layers are treated with an anti-scratch coating to keep everything nice and shiny. Icon has a Pinlock Ready version of the ProShield, Optics and Variant Precision Optics shields. Bottom line — every Icon helmet can now be fitted with a Pinlock Ready shield, which already has the necessary pins installed to accept a Pinlock insert lens.
A silicone seal creates an extra layer to help keep the Pinlock insert lens flush against the Pinlock Ready shield, while a unique technology creates a membrane-like surface across the lens to absorb moisture.
Of the Icon helmets that can accept the Pinlock Ready ProShield, the Airframe Pro Quicksilver manages to be both flashy and understated. The unique silver paint is hand-applied in multiple coats, then burnished, antiqued and polished. As a result of the handcrafted finish, each helmet will have its own patina, so no two are alike. ■
The standard Pinlock insert lens is clear, but Icon also offers versions in silver, dark smoke and Protectint. That last

Scoot for the Scout
Performance Pipes for Indian Bassani offers its slip-ons with slim-design and slash-cut mufflers in chrome or black finishes, and in a chrome Fishtail design for those riders wanting that classic look. They all clean up the look of a Scout, give the bikes an aggressive tone and, with a 5-plus horsepower boost and a couple more foot/pounds of torque, there’s bite to go along with the bark.
Bassani applies its popular Road Rage 2-into-1 setup to the Indian Motorcycle Scout, an addition that adds style, a boost in performance and a nice sounding exhaust tone.
Bassani’s slip-ons for the Scout add a nice finishing touch to the already good-looking bike. They’re also real performers.
I
ndian Motorcycle’s Scout and Scout 60 have certainly turned some heads since they were released, and it’s easy to see why. Both are priced right, look traditionally cool, and feature enough new technology and performance to appeal to Indian fans, new and old. Now Bassani Xhaust has a few new pieces to lift that performance level up a notch or two. Additionally, these new mufflers and full systems give a look and sound these bikes deserve. Three different styles of performance slip-ons are available with fitments for both 2017 and 2018 models. The acclaimed Bassani Road Rage 2-into-1 systems are also available for the Scout and Scout 60, as well as for the 2018 Scout Bobber model. Parts Unlimited has all of them.
Options include black mufflers with black end caps (p/n 18113397), chrome mufflers with chrome end caps (p/n 18113398) and the Chrome Fishtail Slip-ons (p/n 1811-3399.) They’re all a no-hassle fit on both the Scout and Scout 60 and they all carry the same $499.95 MSRP.
Then there are those Road Rage 2-into-1s. Real power-builders, these pure-performance Bassanis are a natural on the Scout, Scout 60, and the Scout Bobber. Four styles are offered; chrome with a short megaphone (p/n 1810-2352), black with a short megaphone (p/n 1810-2353), chrome with a long megaphone (p/n 1810-2354) and black with a long megaphone (p/n 1810-2355.) All four feature the traditional, power-producing Road Rage 1¾-inch to 17/8-inch stepped-headers, Bassani’s custom-design collector and those cool looking and great sounding megaphone mufflers, long or short. They’ll also serve up a substantial performance boost throughout the rpm range, and there’s a nice bump in the low- and midranges, right in that sweet spot where most riders live. All styles will fit with saddlebags. The MSRP is $799.95 for the chrome versions with either megaphone length, and $859.95 for the systems in black. ■

Wireless Battery Monitoring
W
e have all been there: You grab your wallet, put on your gear, open the garage door and discover that you have a dead battery. You then mentally kick yourself for not hooking up your battery to a charger to make sure this didn’t happen — again. Thankfully, Battery Tender has a simple solution to help your customers avoid this in the future. The wireless battery monitor keeps track of a battery’s charge, then sends alerts to your phone via a Wi-Fi connection. The wireless battery monitor is a small device that connects to your battery. It is compatible with standard SAE connectors. Once it is connected to both the battery and Wi-Fi, it’s all set. The next step is to download the Battery Tender app for a smartphone. An easy guide will pop up in the app to guide the user through the process of connecting the mobile device to the wireless battery monitor. By allowing Push Notifications, the app will pass along any messages from the monitor, such as a notice that the charge is getting low.
Making sure a battery is fully charged and ready to go is now as easy as looking at a smartphone app thanks to the Wi-Fi-enabled wireless battery monitor from Battery Tender.
Being able to monitor a vehicle’s battery remotely is a lot easier than the hassle of walking into the garage to find a dead battery. And, of course, Parts Unlimited has a range of Battery Tender charging options for those times when the battery does need a boost. ■

Lead-Free Wheel Weights
New Technology for Spoked-Wheel Balancing
With lead wheel weights on their way out, Kibblewhite Precision Machining, Inc. has an environmentally friendly solution that works well, and looks great – its Spin True lead-free wheel weights.
T
raditional wheel weights are on their way out. In the U.S. the Environmental Protection Agency is actively pursuing a nationwide ban on lead weights, the EU has banned the use of lead weights since 2005 and Japanese automakers have also stopped using lead wheel weights on new cars. What’s the reasoning behind all this? When a lead weight falls off a wheel it gets ground-up in passing traffic, ultimately contaminating ground water, lakes and streams.
Kibblewhite Precision Machining, Inc. (KPMI) has a solution, its new Spin True® lead-free wheel weights. These are chrome plated stainless steel weights that are tough, corrosion resistant and good-looking. They feature a patented four-point clamping system. First and foremost, the Spin True balancing weights are 100 percent lead free. Six weights are offered in quarter-ounce increments from ¼-ounce to 1½-ounces and in two series tailored to specific spoke nipple sizes, either .250-in. to .300-in. or .300-in. to .350-inch. In that mix there are weights that’ll work on dirtbikes, dual-sports, Harley-Davidsons, BMWs, really anything with a spoke and an exposed nipple. And, with that patented fourpoint clamping system, they’ll stay in place. Even the violent action of a dirtbike wheel won’t shake them loose. However, they’re easily removable and completely re-usable. ■

Competition-Inspired Slip-Ons
T
he 2017 KTM RC390 and Duke 390 clearly have racing in their DNA. Both of the models can show off their racing heritage even more with the addition of a LeoVince GP One or LV Pro slip-on exhaust.
The LV Pro slip-on
LeoVince’s GP One takes its compact design and high-tech cues from the racing world. The entire slip-on is made of AISI 304 stainless steel for a lightweight exhaust that produces power and a great tone. First, the canister is coated in a metallic ceramic-based black paint. After that, the GP One is laser-etched with the LeoVince logo and topped off with a sandblasted end cap. The other option for KTM riders is the LV Pro. Available with either a stainless steel or carbon fiber sleeve, the LV Pro has an aggressive racing look, thanks in part to the “Shark Cut” end cap.
The GP One from LeoVince
The end cap combined with the compactness of the entire slip-on make the LV Pro a small, aesthetically pleasing replacement for the stock exhaust. The end cap is a full carbon fiber element that is resistant to high temperatures, helping to further reduce the weight of the entire slip-on. And by choosing the carbon fiber sleeve option, riders can benefit from even more weight savings over stock. A full carbon fastening strap, and the LeoVince logo etched onto the sleeve, are the finishing details for the LV Pro. ■

Revised Regulator
An Upgrade for RZR Electrics
W
ith the idea that something good can always be better, Rick’s Motorsport Electrics has an updated and upgraded version of its rectifier regulator for the Polaris RZR.
Rick’s worked with RZR owners to design their original regulator, aiming for an aftermarket solution that would be easy to install and solve common overheating issues. That first regulator was a 50-amp unit. In continuing to talk to and work with RZR owners, Rick’s discovered that some of the RZRs were using 65-amp units from Polaris, so the 50-amp version wasn’t fulfilling everyone’s needs. The team at Rick’s got to work to design an updated regulator that could accommodate more RZR owners. The result is a 70-amp unit made with MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Technology) technology. This new version is more robust and has higher-capacity components than the OE one. Combined with the MOSFET technology, that equals a unit that runs cooler and more efficiently than ever before. As company president Rick Shaw explains, more amperage means that the regulator can handle more current, so the unit doesn’t get taxed as much as a stock piece would. That decreased stress extends the life of the regulator to make it a more reliable part.
The MOSFET technology at the heart of Rick’s Motorsports Electrics regulators provides more precise control than standard models. MOSFETs transistors are semiconductor switches that act to control the flow of the electrical current. The technology is able to provide that control because it has quicker switching capability, which in turn produces less heat. According to Rick’s, MOSFET rectifier regulators can even improve the overall usable wattage in some cases. Rick’s RZR regulator measures in at 130mm x 120mm x 38mm. Because it is smaller than the 65-amp OE version, the regulator can easily be relocated if necessary. It is also adaptable to other machines that need a higher capacity regulator, adding to its versatility. Check out the Parts Unlimited catalogs for the full line of product offerings from Rick’s Motorsport Electrics. The company has a wide range of parts, including motorsport charging and starting systems plus electrical ignition components for a broad range of powersports vehicles. Many of the parts are direct plug-and-play components for easy installation. ■

Additionally, that popular Yoshimura *Alpha T slip-on is now available for the 2017 KTM 390 Duke/RC390 and the 2014 through 2017 Super Duke R. There are also Alpha T exhausts and fender-eliminator kits for the new Suzuki GSX250R, and for Triumph’s 2018 Street Triple and the Daytona 675. Start with the exhausts for those new Honda and Yamaha dirtbikes. The CRF250R and YZ450F are just now hitting the showrooms, which means riders eyeing these two will also be looking for upgraded performance exhausts. They’re right here. For that Yamaha, Yoshimura has a brand-new RS-4 Signature Series full system ready, a pipe-and-muffler system adding almost 3 percent more horsepower and a bit more torque to an already-potent machine. There are stainless-steel/aluminum/carbon fiber R-4 slip-ons for that new Yamaha, too. Everything is part of the Yoshimura Signature Series, qualified manufacturer-declared replacement parts for a no-hassle sale and installation. A new RS-9T dual system for the 2018 CRF250R Honda is Signature Series, as well. Developed specifically for the new Honda’s dual-port cylinder and its unique downdraft fuel injection system, this newest Yoshimura exhaust features a unique twin-header design and larger mufflers to develop more bottom-end power and improved torque.
mass centralization. On top of all this, the RS-9T is quieter than stock. It’s available as both slip-ons and a full system.

Power and Style
On the street side, there are those *Alpha T slip-ons for the KTM 390 Duke/RC390 and Super Duke R, the 2018 Suzuki GSX250R. An added bonus? Those power-producing Alpha T slip-ons are offered in Yoshimura’s Works Finish, which takes on a unique coloring after it goes through a heat cycle. The end result is a pipe that ends up looking very much like those works components the factory racers use. Yoshimura is as much about looks as it is performance and those new fender-eliminator kits for the Suzuki GSX250R and the Triumph Daytona 675 can clean up the tail sections of those bikes for a tight, sleek profile. ■

SPROCKETS
Super Sprockets
High Quality, Light and Long Lasting
The Supersprox Stealth line features a unique, two-piece design that combines an aluminum alloy inner hub and a steel outer ring, which makes it super strong and lightweight.
By 1975, that product name, Supersprox, was to be found on bikes rolling out of the Husqvarna factory in Sweden, the Maico factory in Germany, as well as Triumph and Norton in the UK. The company’s current lineup includes a range of high quality aluminum and steel sprockets. Supersprox’s Stealth line of sprockets is all about longer life, without compromising weight. The sprockets are designed is to last as much as three times longer than an all-aluminum sprocket and remain as light as possible. How so? Supersprox makes the Stealth using a unique, two-piece design that combines a 7075 T6 aluminum alloy inner hub and an electroless nickel coated, carbon steel outer ring to combine the best of both materials. That means your customers get more strength and less weight. The Stealth bolts to most stock hubs, looks great, and comes designed to perform well with most motorcycles or ATVs. Just show the Stealth to your customers to showcase the two-piece design of the aluminum and steel hybrid sprocket. The longevity and lightweight nature of the sprocket are strong selling points for riders looking for something tough and performance-oriented.
F
ounded in 1959, Supersprox produces highquality racing sprockets for the motorcycle market, and is a supplier to Husqvarna and KTM as well as to racing teams around the globe. Now, those same performance sprockets are available through Parts Unlimited. The company’s founder, Roger Maughfling, was a truly passionate enthusiast and loved all things with motors, especially motorcycles. As the company grew, so did the market demand for high quality parts.

Some Dakar riders have done the whole Dakar Rally on just one Supersprox Stealth sprocket. That’s thousands of miles under the harshest conditions. So, the same sprockets used by Rally riders like Marc Coma (5-time Dakar Rally winner), and off-road racers like Mike Brown (5-time ISDE Gold Medalist, former WORCS Champion), Josh Strang (2010 GNCC Champion), Andrew Delong (5-time ISDE Gold Medalist), and Jacob Argubright (GXE Reno Extreme winner) are now available to your customers. ■

RIDING APPAREL
Weather-Proof Riding
Gear That Withstands the Elements
W
hether it is a simple commute to work or a trip through mountain passes, the pleasure of tour riding in colder conditions can be quickly compromised if your riding gear doesn’t meet the changing demands of the weather. Recent additions to Alpinestars Tech Touring range include the Guayana Gore-Tex® jacket, Bryce Gore-Tex pant and the Yokohama Drystar® jacket and pant. They all incorporate an innovative laminated construction technology to provide a high level of weather-proofing and comfort on short or long-distance rides. Laminated technology bonds the outer layer and the waterproof membrane together, which results in a garment that is lightweight without excess material bulk. It is also 100 percent waterproof, breathable and designed so that water won’t build up between layers. This sealed construction offers great garment structure, significantly reduces wind-chill, and allows the bonded garment to dry more quickly. The Guayana jacket and Bryce pant feature a multi-panel construction with strategic stretch panels for a contoured fit and comfort. The jacket and pants include a thermal liner to ensure versatility and comfort in cold and hot conditions. The Guayana features an anatomical, pre-curved sleeve design with adjustment straps to keep the elbow protection in place, and a convenient waist belt for a precision fit. Storage options include an internal waterproof document pocket, cargo-style pockets and a rear

utility compartment on the jacket. The pants have deep zippered front hand pockets. All the garments feature strategically positioned zippered ventilation air intakes and exhaust vents to help with internal climate control and to help prevent heat build-up. The Yokohama ensemble features the same laminated construction method, though this time the membrane is Alpinestars’ own waterproof and breathable Drystar technology. The jacket and pant have multiple fit adjustments, removable thermal linings and convenient storage options. The jacket and pants fit together thanks to a waist zipper and both have highly visible reflective detailing. The Yokohama jacket comes with removable CE-certified shoulder and elbow impact protectors, and features chest and back compartments with removable padding to allow for an upgrade to Alpinestars’ innovative new Nucleon chest and back protection systems. The Yokohama pant has removable CE-certified knee protectors, which are housed within internal mesh pockets, allowing them to be adjusted according to the rider’s leg length.

The pant also includes internal hip compartments that are lined with ergonomically tapered foam for superior riding comfort. The hip compartments can be upgraded to incorporate Alpinestars new CE-certified Nucleon hip protectors. ■

SEATS
Comfort for The Road
BMW GS Seats with Double the Cushioning
The new range of seats from AirHawk/Danny Gray for the BMW 1200 GS and 1200 GSA Adventure bikes are built to provide mile after mile of comfort. There are versions for taller and shorter riders.
A
irHawk and Danny Gray Custom Motorcycle Seats became sister companies two years ago. Now, for the first time, the companies have collaborated on a project outside of HarleyDavidson applications. New seats for BMW 1200 GS and 1200 GSA Adventure bikes provide double the cushioning for an extra-comfy ride. Each seat in the line – including several full, solo and pillion styles – has an option with Danny Gray’s patented IST (Independent Suspension Technology). The double dose of cushioning comes in the upgraded IST Air options, which include AirHawk’s AirCell Technology fully integrated with IST. IST ergonomically eliminates the shock your body absorbs from the road. Special inserts in the seat are positioned to cushion the bones in the lowest point of your pelvic area, providing extra shock absorption in specifically targeted locations. Meanwhile, AirCell Technology means that a series of air cells comprise the top layer of the seat. The design eliminates painful pressure points, and the amount of air is fully customizable thanks to an adjustable bladder system. The seats are designed to distribute weight, center a rider’s body in the seat and provide what AirHawk’s owner Don Mahoney calls “leg passage.” That final point is one of the more important aspects, since, as Mahoney says, “These bikes are a little taller obviously than Harley-Davidsons, so what you’re looking for is leg passage, which makes it

more comfortable and allows shorter people to be able to put their feet down.” Shorter riders have another perk in the choice of a Low version of each of the GS seat models available. Standard seats in both IST and IST Air options sit at the factory stock seat height, while the Low seats are 1¼ inches lower than the factory standard height. Mahoney is well aware of the importance of getting your feet down when you’re putting the miles on a GS. These seats came about after Mahoney tried several different seats on his own GS and decided that AirHawk could produce something that met his list of demands. Development equals a lot of time in the saddle, since AirHawk and Danny Gray do extensive testing for new designs. Before the GS seats were declared done, Mahoney and three others loaded up and left for the ultimate road test. “Four of us did nearly 10,000 miles up to the Arctic Circle and Alaska. We were gone about 45 days, and of that time, about 2,500 miles were off-road,” Mahoney says. On the bottom of each seat, a handmade fiberglass pan provides a snug fit on the GS. The AirHawk IST Air seats have UV-resistant, breathable, waterproof covers, while the IST seats have a grip material for durability and sure seating. Each GS IST Air seat comes with a 2-year warranty for the AirHawk pads inside the seats. ■

Rossi Helmet Replica Honors Late Racer
V
alentino Rossi is a lot of things, but he has never been a wallflower. His bold, and sometimes silly, helmet graphics have at times been as much of a star as the racer himself. AGV’s latest Rossi replica is a Pista GP R that not only features a bright Italian soccer motif, but also pays tribute to the late Nicky Hayden.
HELMETS
A Tribute to Hayden
Legendary designer Aldo Drudi created the artwork for the replica, which matches the helmet Rossi wore for Saturday morning qualifying during the 2017 Italian GP at Mugello. The bright green color represents a soccer field (football field, if you prefer the European terminology). A cartoon version of Rossi stands in front of the net, with Italian captions to describe the scene of Rossi preparing to take a penalty kick. The Band-Aid on Rossi’s forehead is an acknowledgement of a mishap he had during training shortly before the Italian GP. The tribute to Hayden is found on the sides of the helmet, where Rossi’s 46 is joined to Hayden’s 69 for a single, dual-tone 469. The 69 is, of course, in the same font that always graced Hayden’s bikes. Drudi might be the master of blending as many themes and tributes as possible into one helmet design — a 58 on the back of the helmet is part of Rossi’s continued commemoration of Marco Simoncelli. The Mugello 2017 replica from AGV looks just like Rossi’s, with the exception of the additional sponsor logos. The helmet is a limited-edition release of just 2500. Parts Unlimited is accepting pre-orders now, with shipment expected in January.
AGV’s latest Valentino Rossi replica pays tribute to the late Nicky Hayden. Designer Aldo Drudi combined Rossi’s number 46 with Hayden’s 69 into a unified, dual-tone 469.
The Pista GP R is AGV’s high-tech helmet, and it was designed according to AGV Extreme Standards, the design protocol that considers protection against impact, peripheral vision, compact design, reduced weight, aerodynamics, ventilation and ergonomics. The carbon fiber shell is fitted with an updated, windtunnel-tested Biplano spoiler for optimal aerodynamic performance. The compact design curves anatomically around the head, and is available in sizes SM to XXL. The patented interior structure has an integrated ventilation system with high-flow air ducts, updated ducts in the chin piece and a quick-removal system for the cheek pads. A built-in hydration system has a series of ducts and a valve located on the inside of the chin piece.
The Race 3 Max Pinlock visor is a Class 1 Optic option that is combined with AGV’s patented Visor Lock System to provide a wide field of vision in a visor that stays put. ■

The applications range across most of the major OEMs and models, making both sizes of the front and rear a very versatile option for dealers and riders alike.
