The Adventure Continues by D on Em de
Our grandson Hudson, age 5, took his first ride this winter on a Kawasaki quad. He was a quick learner. In 2014 I rode this Yamaha Super Tenere Adventure bike on the same dirt road between Yuma and Phoenix, AZ that Cannon Ball Baker had taken a century ago. Ten days later I rode it onto Manhattan in New York City. Kinney Jones photo.
I
n this issue we are featuring an in-depth look at the market segment called “Adventure Bikes.” It has been great to follow the growth of this market in recent years, with the manufacturers responding quickly to rider’s ever-growing list of features being asked for. In my opinion, Adventure Bikes are one of the best things that have happened in the motorcycle sport in many years. Rather than being limited only to paved roads, Adventure Bikes widen the options of where a rider can go to reach their destinations. Back in 2010, I got pretty involved with Adventure Bikes when I started a research project to retrace the route of Erwin “Cannon Ball” Baker in 1914 when he set a new transcontinental record. He rode an Indian V-twin from San Diego to New York City in 11 ½ days, the fastest anyone had at the time ever traveled coast to coast. My project resulted in a book I wrote and published called “Finding Cannon Ball’s Trail (www.emdebooks.com). Much of Baker’s 1914 route has since been paved over, but since there were some dirt and sandy roads that survived, I needed both on- and off-road capabilities that only an Adventure Bike could provide. I was able to arrange the use of both some KTM 990 and Yamaha
Super Tenere Adventure Bikes for the project and it was fun to outfit the bikes with many of today’s best aftermarket products and then try them out on the roads and trails. We hope that the feature provides some additional insight into the market for Adventure Bikes and the many accessories that can be found for them in the Parts Unlimited and other catalogs from LeMans Corp. Adventure riders generally are upscale, and will spend the money needed to get the gear for themselves and their machines. Happy selling. While Adventure Bikes are very “definable” based on features, there is a broader way that they can be thought of as well. In my family’s case, everything we ride is, for the rider, part of the adventure. We had fun this past winter introducing another grandson (our daughter’s son Hudson) to the sport as he learned to ride his new Kawasaki quad. He took to it like a fish to water and now loves to ride it every chance he has. We hear that there are a lot of young people who aren’t as interested in motorcycles and related machines than years ago. In our family, we start the young ones early, gear them up properly and give them plenty of instruction and supervision. I have no doubt in my mind that years from now Hudson will be looking for one of those future Adventure Bikes to go explore the world. ■

Our Gringo full-face helmet evolved from the modern custom bikerider’s need for more protection than any standard open-face helmet can provide. The looks says “cool” not “kook,” and that’s just the way we like it. This classic design doesn’t garner high praise for comfort and style by accident—we sweat every detail. Like its premium stablemate the Lane Splitter, the Gringo features an injection-molded ABS outer shell. Thor/KTM rider Marvin Musquin earned his first-ever 450cc Supercross victory in Arlington, Texas.

lot of us grew up riding and racing motocross, but only a select few ever get to truly race at the pinnacle of the sport – Monster Energy AMA Supercross. It’s at this pinnacle where the risks and the rewards both grow to monumental proportions.
450 CLASS
It’s often said that the race to the championship doesn’t really get going until around the time of the Daytona Supercross. Well, Daytona has come and gone, and, as noted, the championship chase is heating up.
Starting the series with three podium finishes in a row, things slowed down a bit for Musquin at the end of the west-coast swing. However, at round six in Arlington, Texas, Musquin had a breakthrough. He grabbed the lead right off
Just after the 2017 championship chase left the west coast, minus Ken Roczen, Thor/Red Bull KTM rider Marvin Musquin stepped up his game.

the start and withstood the pressure from Thor/Monster Energy/Yamaha rider Cooper Webb in the early going to score his first-ever 450cc Supercross victory. “I mean, it was such a good race,” Musquin said. “I actually started before the gate dropped! I just went before the gate. I was kind of lucky, but I went for it. That one felt so good.” Musquin was on fire until Toronto, before the flu disrupted his efforts in Canada as well as Daytona. He bounced back in Indianapolis with a second place finish in the Main. As of press time, he was tied with Cole Seely in third place in the season’s points standings. Thor-backed Rockstar Energy Husqvarna racer Jason Anderson earned a podium finish behind Musquin in Arlington, and has seven top-five finishes and two podiums through 10 rounds of racing, including a third place in Daytona. As of Indianapolis, he was fifth in points.

Thor/Monster Energy/Yamaha’s Webb, mentioned earlier, was really getting the hang of racing Supercross on the bigger 450cc machines, even setting fast qualifying time a couple of times and scoring a podium finish in Oakland at round five. Unfortunately at round seven in Minneapolis, he tangled with Dean Wilson off the start and was thrown down brutally onto his left shoulder. Webb has been out healing up since that point, but all signs point to his return in Detroit for round 12. The championship seems to be a two-horse race at this point, with defending champ Ryan Dungey holding a 12-point lead after Indianapolis. That might seem comfortable, but the other horse – Eli Tomac – is making like Secretariat. Tomac has won six of the last eight rounds, including round 11 in Indianapolis. continued on page 12...

The 250cc Eastern Regional Supercross Series kicked off in Minneapolis, and the Thor-backed Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha team came out with some racers who likely surprised some people. First, there’s French import Dylan Ferrandis, who has shown solid speed throughout the first four rounds of the East, even though he’d never raced a real Supercross prior to Minneapolis. Despite some slipups in each one of his first three 250cc main events, he still managed a sixth place and a fifth place in those three rounds. At round four of this particular series in Daytona, Ferrandis made good, snatching up third place for his first-ever AMA podium finish. Ferrandis sits fifth in points as the series approaches its halfway point. “For me and from where I came from is really a dream come true,” Ferrandis said, choking up near the end. “It’s like 22 years that I dreamed about making a podium in Supercross U.S. … finally I did it. I can’t thank enough my team and all the people who do crazy work for me.”

Perhaps an even bigger story for the Star team was the performance of new hire Colt Nichols. Nichols broke his femur in mid-November, but lined up on the gate at round one of the East in mid-February, barely three months later! That’s normally a minimum six-month injury. Not only that, but Nichols was throwing down from the opening gate drop, going down with another rider at round one in Minneapolis, but then snatching a podium in Atlanta at round two, followed by a fourth-place finish a week later in Toronto Unfortunately, Nichols tore his MCL and fractured his tibia on his other leg in the week between Toronto and Daytona, so he will be out for a while. Then again, maybe he’ll recover quickly again and be back sooner than expected. Zach Osborne has been leading the charge in the 250cc East, winning three Supercross Main events – which includes his win at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy – and holding a nine-point lead after the Indianapolis Supercross in front of teammates Joey Savatgy and Adam Cianciarulo. ■

When he’s not on two wheels, Hollingsworth enjoys spending time with his wife and their four children, as well as skiing, mountain biking, hunting and fishing. New to Parts Unlimited is Craig Crozier, who will now serve as the sales representative for the Northwest Region, covering central Utah. Crozier comes to his new role with experience as an independent sales rep for 12 years, working with different dealers and companies in Washington and California.

Introducing the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit
I
f you’ve watched or attended any AMA Pro Championship Racing since last year’s MXGP World Championship round at Glen Helen, you’ve likely noticed a change in the medical staff on hand for each race. That’s because Alpinestars has signed on as the main sponsor of the medical services for AMA Pro Supercross and Motocross. Now known as the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit, the team’s staff of medical professionals will be on hand with its huge, 18-wheel, rolling hospital rig at all rounds of AMA Pro Racing across the United States in 2017 and beyond. Uniquely equipped with special equipment that’s specifically geared for the sport, the high-tech medical facility is headed up by Tom Carson and Dr. John “Doc” Bodnar, and a crew of doctors and highly trained staff. “We were excited to sign up with Alpinestars, knowing they’ve been a protection company for a very long time, and that’s their main focus,” said Bodnar, the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Center medical director. “Since we’re also all about protecting the riders, it’s a perfect fit, and we’re really excited that we’re able to come together and continue the Medical Center providing care for the entire motocross family.” With Alpinestars’ long history of designing, manufacturing and testing high-end and advanced protective gear – everything from motocross boots and body protectors to full leathers and neck supports – it’s shaping up to be the perfect partnership.
The Alpinestars Mobile Medical Crew standing in front of the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit. This will likely be the only time you’ll see them standing still on any given race day.
“For us, it’s really a big step. We’re now connected with a company that’s in the protection business,” said Carson, the Unit’s chief of staff. “They are a company that has become a major player in protection for twowheel sports and auto racing.”

No matter when or where a racer hits the dirt, the AMMU Crew is on top of it immediately.
Dr. Chris Alexander is as hard working as they come. He runs himself ragged on race day, and during the week he’s busy working as an orthopedic surgeon.
The Medical Center’s doctors and staff have extensive knowledge with the kind of first responder medical help needed while trackside. These skills were put on full display at Anaheim II back in January when Honda rider Ken Roczen had a heavy crash that resulted in a dislocated wrist, dislocated elbow and compound fracture of his radius.
Carson said the program has come a long way since he and Bodnar started up 17 years ago, when it was just, “a doctor and a bag.” Now, the team features such players as longtime athletic trainer Eddie Casillas and a team of dedicated professionals, all of whom are involved with motorcycling or action sports of some kind.
Within seconds of the crash, the Alpinestars medical staff – dressed in their highly visible red shirts – were on hand, rendering aid to Roczen. Throughout the 2017 season, the medical team has been visible offering aid in such incidents as when Mike Alessi cased a jump in the 450 Main at Anaheim I, and when two riders tangled up and crashed during the 450 Last Chance Qualifier at the Phoenix Supercross.
It’s that latter experience, along with what the crew has picked up trackside over the years, that gives the team the advantage. They all have a pretty good understanding of what kind of injuries might result from a particular crash, Carson said. Over that time, the medical team has also worked with the AMA to institute the mandatory concussion management continued on page 20...

ENGINE REBUILD KITS
Quick and Smart
All-in-One Engine Rebuild Kits
With the Engine Rebuild Kit in a Box, your customers have everything they need for a thorough rebuild, all under one part number.
C
ustomers with off-road bikes, ATVs and UTVs are used to it. Their machines lead tough lives in tough conditions so it comes as no big surprise when an engine needs a full rebuild. What will come as a surprise, though, is just how easy Wrench Rabbit has made that process. The company has put together all the parts, pieces, gaskets, seals and accessories that job requires, neatly packing it all into one box. It’s the Engine Rebuild Kit in a Box and just one part number gets everything needed for the job. The kits are available for a big range of off-road bikes, ATVs and UTVs. This list includes all the popular Hondas, Kawasakis, Suzukis, Yamahas and even the Polaris Rangers, RZRs and Sportsmen. Parts Unlimited has them all. A Wrench Rabbit Engine Rebuild Kit in a Box makes sense for a number of reasons. First, there’s the considerable cost-savings for your customers. They’re going to save, on average, about $400 compared to individually pricing out all the OE pieces. Then there’s the time and effort factor, for both that customer and for you. Sure, you could flip through all those Parts Unlimited catalogs and make up a list of everything needed for a full engine rebuild, but how much easier is one simple part number?

Then you’d have to order up everything on that list, one by one. Contrast all that with simply looking up one number for a Wrench Rabbit kit and getting everything needed to rebuild an engine — 2-stroke or 4-stroke — assured that it’s all going be there, it’s all going to be right, and it’s all top quality throughout. The choice is easy, especially when you know what is included. Wrench Rabbit is delivering some really well known brands in the aftermarket here, brands trusted by enthusiasts worldwide. The pistons, pins and clips are Vertex, the brand-new crankshafts are by Hot Rods, as are the main-bearing/seal kits, transmission bearings, outputshaft collars, counter balancer bearings, the water-pump bearings and seal kits and more. Hot Cams OE quality cam chains are included where applicable and to put everything together there are full Vertex gasket, seal and O-ring kits covering everything for that engine, from top to bottom. Most everything needed for a pro-quality engine rebuild is included, all coming in one box with one part number, everything correctly chosen for the application and all OE quality or better. ■

hen you put all the pieces together, Icon’s Konflict collection and Variant Double Stack helmets resemble an Andy Warhol painting thanks to big blocks of bright color. Pop art aside, the Konflict and Double Stack designs are made for anyone with an obsession for color coordinating and an aversion to graphics. The Konflict jacket is available in black, red, green, blue or hi-viz. That’s it, no fancy appliques or sublimated graphics, and not one single skull to be found. The jacket is made of a laser perforated textile chassis with durable Dynax ballistic impact zones. Gathered elastic in the major flex zones ensure that the Konflict looks good in action without binding. An Icon Sport Fit means the arms are slightly pre-curved for an aggressive riding position, and the cut is loose without being baggy to provide mobility minus the bulk. The Konflict’s lighter weight makes it an ideal warm weather option, although the full removable insulated SatinCore liner helps on those chillier rides. D3O impact protectors in the shoulders, elbows and back keep up the Konflict’s street cred. Sizes range from S to 2XL. The short Konflict gloves are primarily black, with just enough color to show that they are the perfect complement to the Konflict jacket. Color options include black, blue, green, red and white, and sizes start at S and go all the way up to 3XL. The backhand is made of Ax Suede

Pushing the Limit
FMF’s Long History of Innovation
I
f you’ve been involved in powersports for any length of time, and in any capacity, be it as a competitor, dealership personnel or weekend enthusiast, you’re likely aware of the long tenure of FMF Racing
For more than four decades, FMF has been a standout performer in the exhaust segment through a strong combination of initiative and innovation. Let’s take a historical look into the Flying Machine Factory and see what has contributed to the longevity of the company. Circa 1973 — Founder Don Emler’s first initiatives: Improve two-stroke race performance by building a better pipe than OE for riders in the Southern California race scene. 1994 — Don Emler’s Flying Machine Factory at this point in business 20 years, offers two-stroke pipes and silencers for Japanese brands, Husqvarna and KTM for a worldwide audience. The company shows considerable innovation with its original Gold Series pipes and Powercore silencers, as well as its select Gold Series Rev and Tork versions. FMF also is working to keep racers’ engines flowing and performing at the highest level. They offer O-ring spring kits, silencer packing, higher quality replacement reeds and some branded apparel. However, exhaust becomes the main focus. For the younger riders, FMF has fitments for all the two-stroke Japanese mini-racer machines.
1995 — FMF’s catalog has ISDE quiet silencers, numerous two-stroke ATV applications, and its first four-stroke mufflers, the Gold Series megaphones. 1996 — Truly competitive production four-stroke machines are just emerging, but there are a number of two- and four-wheel thumpers that are just plain fun. FMF offers an ISDE spark-arrested muffler version for many of these machines featuring power/sound tune-ability. While box vans were the standard trackside setup even for the factories, FMF now makes event appearances in a support capacity with an innovative tractor-trailer rig. 1997 — Four strokes beginning to come into their own; FMF innovates, rebrands and promotes its four-stroke offerings with Megamax — tunable, race-inspired reverse cone technology, and the tunable Performax. The company starts to use alternative materials, components and production processes more suited for enduro and dual-sport exhaust. 1998 to 1999 — FMF releases Powercore 2 and Turbinecore 2 silencers for the newest competition machines. The aerodynamic silencers feature increased packing volume, different canisters, front and rear end caps with progressive fit, look, and sound. The two-stroke Gold series Burly (later renamed Gnarly) pipe is introduced. Today, the FMF Gnarly remains wildly popular. Introduces innovative new FMF four-stroke products, the Powercore IV2 mufflers and the Powerbomb — a sound-dampening, yet power-enhancing front pipe for four-strokes. 2000 to 2002 — SST pipe and silencers for two-strokes are introduced, named 2000 Product of the Year by Dirt Rider magazine. Powercore IV renamed to the more fitting Powercore 4 with serious revisions for performance, tuning and durability. Q mufflers and silencers are born

2008 to 2010 — FMF’s Resonance Chamber Technology makes its way into limited production with the Factory 4.1 for select machines. The industry sees the two-stroke revival for off-road/enduro and the beginnings of Extreme Enduro racing. In response, FMF launches the Q Stealth and makes sure the FMF Gnarly for all the new and old two-strokes are frequently produced and available. In keeping with this titanium love affair, on the two-stroke side FMF introduces the Titanium 2 silencers. Still viable and available today for select applications, these in turn helped inspire FMF’s newest and popular anodized blue Ti Powercore 2.1 silencers. 2004-2005 — FMF focuses on centralizing mass. The Titanium 4 exhausts becomes Titanium 4SL, later the first FMF ‘Factory 4’ products. Additional innovations are made for overall performance increases with sound reduction, attention to quiet inserts, resonance chambers, packing density and volume. FMF introduces premium and multi-layer muffler packing. FMF Q series continues to evolve with these innovations. The company begins to closely pay attention to sound standards for motorbikes and quads in EU countries. For a limited time they produce specific Titanium 4 EU racing exhausts. 2006 — The year of the titanium Megabomb header. 2007 — FMF promotes “build a system.” Off-road riders wanting quiet, better power, less weight combine a Q4

and Powerbomb or Megabomb header. ATV riders on a budget combine Powercore 4 and stainless Powerbomb. For motocross/Supercross competitor, there is the Factory 4 slip-on and the Ti Megabomb.
2011 to present — Factory 4.1 RCT exhausts available across many brands, displacements and model years via full systems or slip-ons. Precision seam-welded titanium canister bodies save weight, increase ergonomics, further centralize mass, increase muffler-packing capacity and improve production efficiency. The Hex shape of Factory 4.1 RCT titanium leads to further initiative using aluminum, to keep products affordable for all. FMF also uses elements of these innovations on Powercore 4 and Q4 products. The 2.1 series of silencers are now available for the burgeoning two-stroke market. Stainless steel Megabombs offer high performance that’s affordable and durable, and further enhances the “build a system” approach for fourstroke and two-stroke segments in motorcycles and ATVs. ■
»» Forty four-years strong and FMF still has plenty of new ideas
and innovative products coming our way. We can’t wait to add them to the timeline. Talk with your Parts sales rep about FMF’s long history of innovation and broad range of products, and get more information at www.fmfracing.com.

Adventure Market Overview
W
hile dual-sport motorcycles have been around, more or less, since the beginning of the sport, we are now in the heyday of the Adventure Bike era.
MACHINES AND ACCESSORIES FOR TODAY’S ADVENTURE RIDERS B y D e n n i s J o h n s o n
Sure those first bikes were ridden in the dirt by necessity (many roads were not yet paved) nowadays that dual use is in demand. Motorcycles variously labeled as dual-sport, enduro or Adventure Bikes currently dominate the market. They’re catchall phrases that encompass a wide range of motorbikes, but the idea is the same — all hold the promise of offering two times the fun. Just about every OEM has a bike that fits into that segment. We’re talking a lineup that includes motorcycles far more street-oriented and built for long-distance touring, while others are lightweight, nimble and made for when the itch comes to ditch the blacktop. Most are capable of doing both and it’s that “Swiss Army knife-like” capability that seems to be driving demand. Kawasaki’s venerable KLR650 and Suzuki’s DR lineup, as well as the performance-minded European bikes and the new big Adventure machines from BMW, KTM, Honda and Yamaha lead the way in the market place. “Although many owners of Adventure Bikes may not use them for serious off-road riding, they like knowing that their bikes are capable of handling that type of terrain if they decide to go off-road,” says Eric Valtos, spokesman for BMW Motorrad, the manufacturer behind one of the most wellknown ranges of Adventure machines, the GS line. “We believe outdoor and/or extreme sports have grown in popularity for adventure seekers, and offroad riding fills a need for people looking for more excitement and adventure in their lives.”
SADDLEMEN Saddlemen’s heated Adventure tour seat with lumbar support was developed for Adventure motorcycle riders who want to rack up the miles in comfort.
DUNLOP
The Trailsmart is Dunlop’s most advanced adventure tire, and is designed to complement the weight and massive power of today’s largedisplacement Adventure Bikes.
That interest has served the company well; its GS models account for almost 40 percent of total BMW Motorrad sales in the U.S., the bulk of those being the R 1200 GS/GS Adventure models, Valtos says. The company’s smaller displacement GS bikes are also popular among younger riders on a budget, women riders and those looking for something a bit more nimble off-road, he adds.

Also at that performance end of the market is KTM with its 1090 Adventure R, 1290 Super Adventure R, 1290 Super Adventure T and EXC-F lineup. The company sees the market as two segments — the Adventure Bikes are its dual sports, and the dual-sport bikes are its off-road machines that are street legal, says media relations manager Tom Moen.

In addition to that draw for off-road adventure, Moen says he sees that the popular market is also driven by older, more experienced dirt-bike riders and those who spent most of their miles on the street who want a new challenge when it comes to riding. The company’s “Ready to Race” motto also informs its Adventure/dual-sport range, Moen says. “They are not parking lot queens that are never off-road,” he notes. “Our bikes are built to be used off-road, and are amazing street bikes.”

The lineup now includes the ADV1, Expedition and XCR apparel lines, as well as hard parts such as windscreens, luggage and protection products. “This is still a work in progress and we have many more items in the product development stage,” says Dan Fitch, Moose Racing’s brand manager. Fitch says that some of the more popular Moose Racing products for this segment include luggage and accessories for connecting portable electronics, as well the protective parts like skid plates and crash guards — good insurance against having to replace costly OE parts.

Another player in the apparel side of things, Icon now has its full head-to-toe range of Raiden gear aimed at this market. There are even other products in its line like mesh jackets that make their way to the Adventure Bike crowd, says Justin Knauer, Icon’s general manager. “It’s important for us to embrace the ADV world as we know some of our dedicated Icon riders who have been with us since day one have matured and now ride Adventure or dual-sport bikes,” he says. “There are a lot of riders out there who have had, or still have, multiple style bikes in their garages. When you’re a seasoned rider on street or dirt it’s only natural to want to combine those two skill sets.” Knauer says he’s thankful that the OEMs have caught on to the trend and now produce some great options at different price points and purposes — beyond some of the earlier, more expensive bikes — that have helped the market grow. When it comes to servicing the Adventure Bike/dual-sport customer, Knauer urges dealers to really listen to their customer

thought out, smartly styled and crafted with the finest, long-lasting materials. Those new Terrain jerseys and pants, introduced this year, are sure to catch a rider’s eye. Available in two colorways, Camo and Blackout, this is all-day riding gear built to perform. The full-coverage jerseys feature a moisture-wicking polyester main chassis with abrasion resistant materials on the sleeves and shoulders for added protection. Vented side panels and a three-quarter-chest zipper offer plenty of comfort and ventilation. There’s also a rib-knit collar and reflective accents for enhanced visibility. As much as riders will like those Terrain jerseys they’ll love the matching pants. This is gear tailored to the application and intended use. Starting with tough, abrasion-resistant materials for a durably constructed chassis, Thor added full grain leather knee panels for added coverage in those crucial areas and then refined it all for comfort and performance.

Tools for the Road Kits for Trailside Repairs
W
hen Dan Parks bought his first HarleyDavidson back in 1993 he was more than a little surprised to find that no tool kit came with the bike. Not even a basic set.
He quickly put one together and after realizing that many riders on plenty of other bikes were faced with the same problem, he established CruzTOOLS. Packing along a comprehensive tool kit delivers peace of mind, the knowledge that most minor mishaps will likely get fixed.
The RoadTech B1 tool kit provides a wide assortment of BMW-specific items such as male and female star wrenches and a 19 x 22mm axle hex adapter. The DMX1 Fanny Pack Tool Kit can be worn by a rider or mounted to a front fender.
Now fast forward two decades and that startup company has built a reputation for affordable, dependable and highly functional carry-along tool kits for virtually all makes and models of powersport vehicles, including the current darlings in the industry, Adventure Touring and dual-sport Bikes. By its very nature Adventure Touring and dual-sport riding almost define the need for a carry-along tool kit. Traveling to remote destinations over varying terrain, often far removed from cellphone coverage, riders in these disciplines had better be prepared for whatever the trail throws at them. It might be a case of fix it or walk. A good tool kit is an essential part of ride preparedness and CruzTOOLS has a full range of those kits for Adventure and dual-sport riders. Parts Unlimited has them all. Every CruzTOOLS kit comes packed with a wellthought-out selection of professional-quality tools, most even including those quick “get you back on the road fast” items like threadlocker, mechanic’s wire, and cable ties. The top-end RoadTech™ tool-kit series includes a way-cool mini-ratchet and socket set, while the new Speedkits provide impressive capability in a microsized package. All the tools are lifetime guaranteed, absolutely dependable when they’re needed the most, and come wrapped in a handy, compartmentalized and easy-to-carry case. Keep a few kits out where customers can see them, right there along with all the other Adventure and dual-sport accessories. Riders will recognize the need, and appreciate the easy portability. ■

LUGGAGE
Watertight and Just Right Introducing the ADV1 Dry Bags
Moose Racing’s 30-liter ADV1 saddlebags
B
y its very nature, motorcycle riding puts you out in the elements. Whether it’s commuting or recreating via two wheels, when the rainstorms start or the heat wave hits, there’s little to do but grin, bear it and hope you’re wearing the right gear for the situation.
The ADV1 line offers plenty of rugged durability in soft-sided luggage that’s exceptionally waterproof and extremely functional. Just look at the bags on a bike and you can see they’re the perfect complement to Moose’s ADV1 Adventure jacket and pant combo.
For your customers on those increasingly popular Adventure bikes, weather challenges are just part of the experience. After all, look at that riding apparel geared for this market — it’s usually rugged, functional and ready to perform whether it’s in snow at 10,000 foot elevations or railing rain on the plains.
Let’s start with the saddlebags. Constructed from heavyduty waterproof tarpaulin, the bags feature durable heat-welded seams that keep water out and away from what’s inside. To further enhance that waterproofing, the bags seal by folding over and rolling down and buckling the opening — if you’ve used a dry bag for kayaking, this is the same setup.
Luggage for this hearty breed of riders is also of the rough and rugged variety, often hard-sided, boxy, industrial and ready to take a beating. Moose Racing has plenty to offer in that arena, but figured there was another option to offer to those Adventure-type customers. Thus was born its ADV1 lineup of dry bag and packs.

The ultra light bags are waterproof carriers that can be used to keep items separate and neat inside those new ADV1 saddlebags.
ADV1 dry backpack
Your customers can increase the storage capacity on the tail of their bikes by adding an ADV1 trail pack. These include the same waterproofing features as the saddlebags — heavy-duty tarpaulin and roll-down-andbuckle opening — and include a water-resistant, zippered external pocket that’s perfect for gloves or spare parts. Jackets or other items can be externally secured to the bag by using the dual compression straps that can be cinched down good and tight. The trail packs are available in three different sizes; 25 liter, 40 liter and 60 liter. The ADV1 dry backpack is also built from that same waterproof tarpaulin and also, heat-welded seams and that roll-down top, making it a great choice for commuters or travelers who want to prepare for whatever weather Mother Nature has in store for them. The pack fits securely to the body thanks to adjustable shoulder and sternum straps. The tarpaulin used in making all three bags is easy
to clean and maintain — just spray them down and wipe them off. Other options in that ADV1 lineup are the ultra light bags. These waterproof carriers are made from polyester that’s been treated with a special waterproof coating. Seam-taped seals also help keep things dry, as does that trick roll-down top. Heavy-duty quick-release buckles help the content of the bags stay put. The ultra light bags are available in a 25-liter size and in a three-pack that includes bags in the following sizes; 2 liters, 5 liters and 10 liters. Group the whole lineup of ADV1 packs and saddlebags together for a luggage combo that’s ready for the wet and rough stuff. ■

ff-road and dual-sport riders now have more color and graphics options when it comes to AGV Helmets. The AX-8 Evo has a new graphic in two color schemes, while the AX-8 Dual Evo helmet has four new choices. The AX-8 Evo offroad helmet is now available from Parts Unlimited in the Nofoot graphic, which comes in white/ cyan and white/red options. Underneath the bold new graphic design is an updated AX-8 Evo that has distinctive AGV styling. The Evo’s shell is rated as AGV’s SSL (Super Super Light) option with its fiberglass/Kevlar/carbon construction. The shape of the helmet’s base is designed to reduce interference with back protectors and decrease risks of impact traumas. Sizing goes from XS to XL. The internal padding features increased thickness for improved comfort and stability, and it is designed specially for hard charging riders under a lot of duress. The breathable Dry-lex material is completely removable and washable, including the flap on the strap. Even the fixed part of the cheek pads is made from a soft plastic rather than fabric to make cleaning — and staying clean — easier. The AX-8 Dual Evo is an upgraded version of the AX-8 Evo. versatile crossover helmet, and AGV recommends the model for Adventure Touring riders. The new graphics options are Karakum in camo/orange or black/gunmetal/ red as well as Wild Frontier, a design that features famous peaks of the Himalayas in either black/white or military green/white. The integrated visor provides complete protection from wind and rain, while two additional adjustable vents give a rider more options for controlling airflow through the helmet. Because the visor and peak are both removable, the AX-8 Dual Evo has three possible configurations. The full helmet, with the visor and peak, is ideal for Adventure Touring and Supermoto racing. Swapping the visor for motocross goggles gives the Dual a motocross/enduro setup, and removing the peak creates a look favored by street fighter and naked bike riders. Like the AX-8 Evo, the lower section of the Dual Evo has been designed to integrate with back protectors, and the chin bar acts as a shock absorber to help prevent and reduce impact traumas. Inside, the Dry-lex liner absorbs moisture and increases the comfort factor by feeling softer against the skin than other choices. Sizing goes up to XXL. ■

TIRES
Street and Trail
Introducing Big Block Pavers
A
dventure Bikes are typically a mix of features from a variety of motorcycle styles. They’re big and stable, with large fuel tanks for long distance rides, and can carry luggage and go great distances like touring bikes. They’re also made to function reasonably well off-road, like dirt bikes, as well as maintain a fast cruising speed on the highway. They are literally designed to ride out of the garage and go on an adventure. One of the most important items on your customer’s Adventure bikes are tires. As with any motorcycle, tires are the contact point that delivers power to the ground, makes the bike stick in corners, and really perform when the brakes are applied. Tires are particularly important to your Adventure Touring customers because they must be asked to work on so many different types of surfaces and conditions; on-road, off-road, highway, rain, mud, heat and cold, as well as high and low speeds. That’s why Kenda developed the Big Block line of tires for Adventure bikes. These tire’s name helps explain their function. The big blocks work like extra-large knobbies off-road, with large rubber blocks that can grab hands-full of dirt and mud while propelling the machine forward. When the Big Blocks hit the pavement, those extra-large block patterns offer a good contact patch for street riding. Big Blocks offer the best of both worlds when it comes to that on-road/ off-road Adventure bike riding style.
The Paver, Kenda’s newest tire in its Big Block lineup. It’s built for Adventure riding customers who spend a lot of time on the pavement, but still need off-road performance.
Kenda’s Big Block tires are designed specifically to meet the demands of the new range of high-powered Adventure motorcycle and serious Adventure Touring rider. The all-new Big Block Paver K678F/K678 from Kenda is the latest addition to the Big Block family. Once again, the function is in the title. The new Paver is slightly different from other Kenda Big Blocks in that they are designed for your Adventure riding customers with an on-road focus. The front tread pattern is designed to minimize the scalloping common on heavier Adventure bikes while providing long wear and excellent grip in all conditions. The rear tread is designed for higher mileage on pavement while maintaining the necessary traction in off-highway conditions. These tubeless tires are also DOT approved. Adventure Bound
Gear Built for Extreme Conditions
Alpinestars’ Valparaiso 2 Drystar gear is well suited for Adventure Tour riding, whether the route is heading into the mountains or across the desert
The Valparaiso gloves feature an innovative Drystar sealed triple layer waterproofing and insulation while the sealed, reduced material design offers greater dexterity and sensitivity on the bike’s controls. The entire Valparaiso range is constructed from advanced materials and has strategically positioned reinforcements for safety and durability. Ergonomically designed to fit a range of body and hand types, the garments feature a range of customization capabilities to ensure a close fit. The jacket incorporates abrasion-resistant zones, while the pants have tear-resistant rip-stop and ballistic nylon panels that protect the rider without harming the bike’s paintwork.
F
or motorcycle enthusiasts planning their next big adventure, Alpinestars has an extensive range of riding apparel that provides innovative performance solutions to the unique set of challenges encountered while on a long road trip. The first key consideration is preparing for the worst when it comes to the unpredictable and extreme weather conditions when Adventure Tour riding, especially when the route heads high into the mountains or across the desert. The Valparaiso 2 jacket and pant offers impressive 4-in-1 all-weather protection. This ensemble provides excellent coverage against the wet and features a removable Drystar lining; this is Alpinestars’ proprietary, fully waterproof and breathable material. The lining is seam-taped to avoid stitching, thus ensuring there is no wet penetration in the most vulnerable areas. For when the temperature drops, the Valparaiso 2 jacket and pant feature a removable heavy thermal liner for high levels of insulation without bulk. The thermal liners are full length (sleeve and leg) and are secured in position with snap buttons to ensure full coverage and an excellent fit.
There is also CE-certified protection on the shoulder, elbows and knee. These protectors are removable and replaceable for convenience. Customers can upgrade the chest and back compartments on the jacket with Alpinestars CE certified Level 2 Nucleon protection, and can be used with an Alpinestars Bionic Neck Brace. The Valparaiso gloves feature Alpinestars’ patented third and fourth finger-bridge, which prevents contortion and separation of the fingers in the event of impact slide while the over-molded, advanced knuckle protection offers optimized levels of performance. To ensure there are no irritating edges, the Valparaiso Jacket features comfort lining on the collar, pre-curved sleeves and an elongated rear for maximum coverage to the lumbar area. The pants have a pre-curved design and accordion stretch inserts to ensure comfort. A waterproof zipper and Velcro leg cuff closure keeps out the elements. ■

Alpinestars’ unique Jet Ventilation System consists of large, zippered air vents with open mesh gussets on torso and back, plus two-way zip vent openings on the arms. The leg air-intakes are situated on the thighs for greater regulation of internal airflow for enhanced riding comfort.

New Applications for Adventure coming from Akrapovič’s involvement in crosscountry rallies. The titanium canister has a deeper sound than the EC/ECE type-approved system offered by Akrapovič. The doubleflow muffler has a hexagonal shape, classic rear endcap and a carbon fiber clamp. Once installed, it increases power throughout the entire RPM range. Akrapovič also offers an Optional Header for the Honda. The stainless steel header results in increased power gain when paired with the Slip-On Line canister.
Honda’s Africa Twin was a hit as soon as it landed on dealership showroom floors. Now owners can give that bike a boost with a Slip-On Line muffler.

Slip-Ons
There are two Slip-On Line (Titanium) options for the 2017 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure. Both feature increased power, a classic Akrapovič sound, a carbon fiber end cap and compatibility with BMW side cases. The difference between the two is in the titanium outer sleeve; one version is a standard brushed look with a titanium welded bracket, while the other has a black finish on the sleeve paired with a black bracket. The Slip-On Line mufflers for the GS can be fitted with an Optional Header in stainless steel or an Optional Header (Titanium). The titanium offers significant weight savings, shaving off 4.8 pounds over the stock header.

Let your diehard BMW customers know that Akrapovič now has a Slip-On Line model muffler for that popular 2017 BMW R 1200 GS.
krapovič is getting riders ready for wherever the road, paved or not, may take them. New SlipOn Line exhausts and headers are available for a number of Adventure Touring motorcycles, including the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin, BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, BMW S 1000 XR and Kawasaki Versys 1000. Each application in Akrapovič’s Slip-On Line adds power, delivers improved performance, reduces weight over stock and offers a distinctive Akrapovič tone. The Slip-On Line (Titanium) for Honda’s Africa Twin is designed to withstand harsh conditions, with development
A Slip-On Line (Titanium) muffler is also available for the 2017 BMW S 1000 XR. It has been redesigned to fit seamlessly with the bike’s lines. The Optional Header (Titanium) that pairs with it saves an impressive 12.6 pounds, and the Optional Header is nearly as light, taking 11.1 pounds off of the stock weight of the bike.
The Slip-On Line (Carbon) for the Kawasaki Versys 1000 has a carbon fiber outer sleeve and end cap. Its shape is designed to fit on a Versys that also has Kawasaki side cases. Versys riders who want even more carbon fiber touches can replace the stock heat shield with Akrapovič’s carbon fiber heat shield. ■

UTV WHEELS
P R O D U C T
S H O W C A S E
Built Tough
Rugged Wheel, Sharp Design
T
he UTVs being built today are factory ready to hit the trails or the hills. We’re talking super capable machines that are as ready for work as they are for play. Along with all that capability is increased mass so you’re seeing more of those UTVs heading out on 17-inch tires. Moose Utility Division knows that your customers don’t want to leave the showroom with a stock unit, especially when it comes to the four wheels on which those UTVs are rolling. That’s why the development team at Moose has come up with the new 420X wheel, a product designed to not only handle those larger 17-inch tires, but also look good doing so.
to work-grunting labor, they’re likely asking the most of the machines and want a wheel that can deliver. The 420X has a 1,300 lb. load rating and is tested to comply strictly with DOT standards. Moose Utility Division also has some pretty tough standards for the products it makes, and the 420X is no exception. Each of these wheels gets a full inspection on the assembly line, a process that includes a thorough X-ray. This is to ensure the complete quality, reliability and integrity of the wheel. This is a good tidbit to pass along to your customers — it’s one of those Features and Benefits items that really stick with a person.
Moose Utility Division builds parts and accessories that are better than stock, especially stock wheels. Its new 420X wheels are big and beefy, and are built to handle any of the rigorous demands four-wheel owners ask of them. And for those concerned about the overall aesthetics of their ride — and they all are, whether it’s a ranch tool or a trail machine — the 420X is available in gloss black or glass black with a machined lip. So let’s get into the details of the 420X. First off, the new wheel joins MUD’s already illustrious lineup of ATV/UTV wheels, a line that includes the popular 387X and 393X wheels that the company offers. Next up consider how your customers are using their quads. From on-road use
Moose Utility Division’s 420X wheels are built for the newer, heavier UTVs that featured 17-inch tires as original equipment.
Given that UTVs see a broad range of uses, doing everything from hauling game and packing in firewood, to blasting across the desert or swamping through the mud, the 420X is a wheel that can allow your customers to stand apart from the pack. Gloss black looks good on just about any occasion and at $149.95 apiece retail, these wheels will give your customers plenty of bang for their bucks. A Moose center cap is even included with each wheel. ■

imply calling British Customs a company that designs aftermarket motorcycle parts is not enough. The Southern California company also labels itself as a lifestyle brand, with a firm focus on the café racer aesthetic. Parts Unlimited now carries a wide range of British Customs factory-spec bolt-on parts for the Modern Classic Triumph Bonneville, Thruxton and Scrambler models. The high-quality collection includes number plates, handlebars, gas caps, seats, taillights, foot pegs and all of the other parts necessary for turning a stock motorcycle into a custom café bike. British Customs designs its parts to be easy to install, requiring only common tools and a minimal technical know-how. They are also designed to easily integrate with each other, allowing a rider to put together a complete look in as little as one weekend. “Our number one goal is to help riders customize and upgrade their bike without the hassles normally associated with customization. Our bolt-on parts and accessories are designed to factory spec and take the guesswork out of
One of the most distinctive designs from British Customs is the Slammer seat, available in brown or black with a choice of Diamond or Tuck and Roll stitching. The seat looks retro, but the interior is all modern. BC Hybrid Gel Technology combines gel and foam to conform to the rider’s body and eliminate pressure points. The Slammer seat fits the 2016-17 Triumph Street Twin and Bonneville T120. The fender eliminator kit cuts down on weight, drag and, according to British Customs, dork factor. The kit replaces the stock rear fender and taillight assembly, and it is available with either a Lucas style taillight or a cat-eye style light. Handlebar clamps are available in 7/8-inch, 1-inch and 11/8-inches sizes. The four-bolt clamps are carved from blocks of 6061 aluminum and provide an anodized upgrade to the controls. The British Customs Retro chain guard is designed with a unique hole pattern that accents the drivetrain, particularly when combined with the Retro rear sprocket. The aluminum chain guard is available in both black and brushed finishes. ■

BRAKE PADS
Teamed Up to Win Brakes That Perform
It’s also why DP became a direct supplier to Can Am for some of its OEM models and the officially endorsed upgrade for all the others. DP brakes perform. They grab tight when they’re supposed to, they serve up great feedback and control, they’re quiet, clean, and they can last up to three times longer than OE. None of this is lost on those racers and manufacturers. It won’t be lost on your customers either. You don’t have to be a racer to appreciate performance, but following the lead of a winner is never a bad move. Your customers can get the very same DP Brakes brake pads used by some of the top contenders in ATV/UTV racing, and experience all the same great features and benefits.
P
ro racers and OE manufacturers know the role that quality and longevity plays in ATV/UTV performance. It’s the reason leading contenders in GNCC, the top 10 pros this year including points leader Walker Fowler, Adam McGill and Chris Borich, set up their machines with the pads from DP Brakes.
And, for the 2017 season, there’s a Who’s Who list of racers and teams to follow. In ATV Motocross Pro/Pro-Am, Team Hetrick Racing’s Joel Hetrick is using DP, and so is Team Baldwin Motorsport’s John Natalie, Root River Racing’s Josh Upperman, JB Racing’s Jeff Rastrelli, Janssen Racing’s Cody Janssen, and Sky Volkamer of Vossman Racing. ■
