portbikes are the theme of this issue. Depending how long you have been in the motorcycle industry, you might know that sportbikes were once only about top-of-the-line virtual race replicas. But that has all changed in recent years. The market today is much broader, with many smaller displacement models of motorcycles for the riding community to choose from. When a market segment changes as much as we’ve seen in sportbikes, that means yesterday’s sales strategies are out of date, both for new and used bike sales, as well as how you help your customers get properly outfitted and their bikes accessorized to fit their needs. Be sure to read our feature story beginning on page 28, followed by a few selected products to checkout. You will find them, and more in the 2017 Parts Unlimited Street Catalog. Sportbikes have always been inspired by what happens in the racing world, and we have a report in this issue on the big race weekend at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. Now the sole MotoGP race in the United States, the Austin event also included a round of the 2017 MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Race Championship. Parts Unlimited has stepped up to sponsor and support the MotoAmerica series, meaning there will be opportunities throughout the year for dealers to come out to a race and see the action first hand. See your Parts Unlimited rep for more details. In closing, the motorcycling world received a terrible shock recently when the news broke that America’s last MotoGP world champion, Nicky Hayden, was critically injured while riding a bicycle in Italy. He had been competing this year in the World Superbike series and was training there for the upcoming WSB Italian Grand Prix. Sadly, he passed away a few days later. One of three racing brothers, Nicky was clearly one of the most popular riders in the world. His legacy includes a Daytona 200 victory, AMA Supersport and Superbike National championships, an historic MotoGP win at the U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca in 2005, followed by a repeat win there and a world championship in 2006. Nicky is survived by his parents Earl and Rose; his siblings Tommy, Jennifer, Roger and Kathleen; his fiancée Jacqueline Marin; nieces Olivia, Klaudia, Vera, Kyla Jo, and Kate; nephew Colt; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. All of us at Parts Magazine extend our deepest condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed. ■

hile the bulk of the racing world had their eyes on the thrilling title races at the 2017 Monster Energy/AMA Supercross series finals, Thor/Husqvarna Jason Anderson swooped in under the radar and picked up his first victory in the 450cc class for 2017. The win put Anderson in fourth place overall, following podium finishes in Arlington, Daytona, Seattle, Salt Lake City, and East Rutherford. “I’m so happy I got the win,” Anderson said. “I didn’t want to get in the way of the two guys up front because I knew they were fighting for the championship, but things turned out in my favor. When I saw those seas part, I knew it was mine. Too bad it had to wait until Round 17, but it’s really cool and I’m excited to end the season with this win.” ■

Yoshimura Suzuki’s Toni Elias leads teammate Roger Hayden and reigning Superbike champion Cameron Beaubier on his way to victory in the opening round of the 2017 MotoAmerica Superbike series. For the first half of the MotoGP race, Dani Pedrosa led Marc Marquez, until his teammate made the pass and surged on to victory. Valentino Rossi then battled with Pedrosa before ultimately landing a second place finish.

Starting from pole position, Marquez tailed his Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa for the first half of the race before slipping ahead into the lead to claim his notable victory. For his part, Pedrosa found himself in a late-race battle for 2nd place with Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi, who eventually prevailed.

MotoAmerica at COTA The weekend in Austin also included the season opener of the MotoAmerica Motul Superbike series, where Parts Unlimited-backed rider Jake Gagne made his debut on the Genuine Broaster Chicken/RoadRace Factory team’s new Honda CBR1000RR SP2. While Gagne claimed a spot in the top 10 for race one, he sat out race two due to electrical issues with his bike.

Yoshimura Suzuki’s Toni Elias ended up the victor at COTA, where he won back-to-back Superbike races for a total of four consecutive wins at the Texas track. Yamaha’s Cameron Beaubier picked up second, while Elias’s teammate, Roger Hayden rounded out the podium with a third place finish. The series next meets up in late June at the Utah Motorsports Campus for the Championship of Utah. ■

ff-road riding and racing is a physical workout at any time of the year. Add in some sweltering summertime heat, though, and things can get uncomfortable fast. The right gear goes a long way towards alleviating those summertime blues and Thor has it all. There are lightweight and fully ventilated riding kits, pants and jerseys built for the season, as well as lightweight, vented and warm-weather comfortable gloves, and lightweight and moisture-wicking socks. For trail riders, Thor offers a wide selection of hydration packs to tote along those all-important and thirst-quenching liquids so necessary when the temperature rises. An obvious place to start is with those riding/racing kits; the lightweight and fully vented pants and jerseys designed especially for warm-weather action — the Fuse Air and Pulse Air lines. As the names imply the Air versions of Thor’s award- and race-winning kits are all about keeping cool when the thermometer goes up. The Fuse Air gear is the most technically advanced, topperforming, top-quality racewear Thor has ever released. Perfect warm-weather gear, the jerseys have fully-vented mesh panels for maximum airflow. The Fuse Air pant offers its cooling airflow with more fully vented panels. Cool and comfortable, all this is built tough and it’s available in Thor’s new Lit, Pinin and Dazz styles.

Color choices include white/red, white/purple, magenta/ yellow and flo orange/white making everything look as cool as it feels. Thor’s super-versatile and tailor-fit Pulse Air jerseys feature set-in sleeves and four-way stretch panels in the cuffs and collars. The Pulse Air pants feature a pre-curved shape for a fit ready for action. Both pant and jersey are built for comfort when the temperatures rise. Graphic choices here include the new Profile and Activ styles and colorways of power blue/lime, white/multi, cactus and covert sand are all available. Lightweight and summer-comfortable gear choices don’t end with those riding kits. Thor also has the MX Cool Socks and Dual-Sport Socks to help beat the heat. Light, durable and comfortable, they’re made with a moisture-wicking Cool Max material, a special blend designed to keep feet cooler and dryer longer. Those Dual-Sport styles, shorter than a traditional motocross sock, are intended for use with boots or shoes with a lower height compared to a motocross boot. Both styles are available in a number of colors. The MX Cools come in charcoal/red, gray/orange, blue/green and green/orange. The short-height Dual-Sport choices are charcoal/red, blue/green and green/orange. Either way they’re a cool, comfortable and worthy addition to a rider’s summertime kit.

t’s not all that long ago that a customer looking for a sportbike had only a few options available across most OEMS — it could either be a Hypersport, liter bike or a mid-range machine.

Well, a lot has changed since high capacity engines dominated the market. Now, the term “sportbike” means something else as the size of the bikes has shifted to a wider array of smaller displacement machines and style variations like naked bikes and streetfighters, in addition to the more familiar road racing style of motorcycle.

An analysis by Power Products Marketing (PPM) suggests that small-displacement models account for nearly half of the sport market, while mid-size models and large displacement categories each represent about a quarter of the market. According to PPM, a Minneapolis-based research firm specializing in the powersports industry, 2016 sales of small displacement sport models grew in the high single digits. “The sport portion of the market has been transformed over the past decade by the introduction of a larger selection of displacements,” says Guido Ebert, Power Sports

Market Manager at PPM. “It wasn’t long ago that a prospective sport buyer had the choice of either a mid-size or a large model. Now, the general sport category is benefitting from an increasing selection of modestly priced (sub $10,000) product in a variety of engine sizes.” The shift in the sport market has opened up new opportunities for dealerships and aftermarket vendors eager to cater to changing tastes, and to welcome new buyers into the world of motorcycling. This change in the market reflects what owner Nick Rank is seeing at his pre-owned only dealership, Road, Track & Trail, in Big Bend, WI. Rank says he’s seeing liter bike sales jump in the Spring — something he attributes to tax returns coming back — and the mid-range tend to sell in the fall. Of the newer, smaller sized bikes, he’s getting a number of entry-level and female riders buying bikes like the Kawasaki Ninja 300 and Honda’s CBR300R. Many of those customers, he adds, tend to continued on page 28...

come back in and trade up to newer bikes. “We have a 60 percent repeat business going on here,” Rank says. “We see a lot of that stuff coming back to us.” At Simply Street Bikes in Eden Prairie, MN, those customers buying bikes like the Yamaha R1 and Suzuki GSX-R1000, tend to be experienced riders looking for the advanced performance, handling and style they promise. According to marketing coordinator, Jake Paulson, the dealership is seeing a number of customers making the change from the big bikes to the newer generation of midrange machines like the KTM 690 Duke, Triumph Daytona While the newer, smaller motorcycles attract entry level and beginner riders, the powerful liter bikes and Hypersport machines draw experienced enthusiasts who demand high-quality, performance aftermarket parts like Dunlop’s new Sportmax Q3+ tire.

Of course, one place that really reflects the changes in the motorcycle market and shift in trends is the aftermarket. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the pages of those Parts Unlimited catalogs. Many aftermarket manufacturers have added new or expanded fitments to popular product lines for the growing range of sport machines. Johnny Jump, powersports brand manager at K&N Engineering, says the company has noticed that demand for filters for big bikes has remained strong, and has also adjusted to the changes in the sportbike market by developing more products for, and focusing on hot categories like Adventure Touring, dual sport, and the new smaller displacement sport machines. “Those small displacement bikes need more power too,” Jump says, adding that K&N offers its OE replacement High-Flow air filters and Performance oil filters for these bikes, including KTM’s RC390 and 390 Duke. This need for speed is also something that the R&D team at LeoVince has addressed in the face of a changing market, says Roberto Morone. In addition to two new lines – the GP Duals and the Classic Racer exhausts – for large displacement bikes, the company has introduced market-specific pipes for the most popular small displacement applications. The company has exhausts for Honda’s smaller CBR lineup as well as the popular Grom, Kawasaki’s Ninja 250R and 300, and Yamaha’s YZF R3. Morone notes that currently, the company’s GP Corsa exhaust for the smaller sportbikes is a really hot seller. continued on page 30...

Anaya predicts the 2017/2018 liter bike market is going to get a boost with the introduction of the new Yamaha R1M and the updated Kawasaki H2 and H2R. Scot Clark, marketing and communications manager at Michelin, echoed this observation about customers buying the bigger, more powerful bikes. “Michelin continues to see strong growth in all of our product lines aimed toward these bikes,” Clark says. “Riders who choose these motorcycles clearly understand the importance of the tire in the rider/tire/motorcycle performance triangle.” Saddlemen’s Dave Echert says demand for the company’s product line for the high capacity machine has remained strong over the past few years, with many of these consumers recognizing the performance benefits of an upgraded, technically advanced seat. ...continued from page 28

hen it comes to dirtbikes, whether it’s a high-performance motocross machine or a fully loaded off-road racer, bike stands are essential. Sure, a kickstand can be found now and again, but for the majority of riders, a stand is necessary for storage and wrenching. The off-road experts at Moose Racing know how important it is to have a stand on hand. That’s why they offer a wide range of options, whether it’s a simple T-stand or one that features built-in storage for tools and other essentials.

FUNDAMENTAL BIKE STAND This strong aluminum stand should be a staple for any dirtbike rider. Extensively tested by the product development team at Moose Racing, the Fundamental Bike Stand includes a thick rubber pad to prevent scratching, a 4-inch drain hole and a welded-in tool tray. Plates welded to the bottom of the legs prevent it from sinking into soft dirt. Available in black, blue, green, orange, red, and silver, this stand is 17-inches tall, with a 10-inch x 10-inch top and a 14 1/2-inch base.

T-STAND Starting off with that T-stand, here’s a product that’s as handy in the garage as it is trackside. Easy to transport and stow, Moose Racing’s T-stands are sized per application — 11.5mm for KTMs, 17.5mm for Honda and Kawasaki machines, and 14.5mm for Yamaha and Suzuki bikes. The stand’s upper pin fits snugly into the rear axle, meaning the T-stand won’t fall off a bike when it’s moved like those old triangle stands do. Given its design, it also won’t sink into soft ground. Simple and tough, it features no moving or changeable parts that can fall off or be lost. It’s made of steel and powder coated in gray, red or black.

OIL CHANGING STAND Here’s a handy stand designed to help make oil changes a snap. Simply slide it under a bike, step down on the arms on either side and it quickly lifts the bike, allowing for easy access to the oil drain plug. The unique, minimalist design frees up space for more working room and folds flat for storage. It includes a large oil tub.

ALUMINUM BIKE STAND Built from 6061 T4 aluminum, this stand is designed to survive the rough and dusty elements of the off-road environment. It features an exclusive Moose Racing anti-slip rubber platform pad so that bike will stay put. The extra-thick platform features reinforced sides for extra durability. There is a large oil drain hole to make changes easy, and a removable tray can hold tools, parts, chemicals or an oil catch pan. The arched base makes it very stable on uneven surfaces. Available in silver and black, it is 17-inches tall and has a 10-inch x 10-inch top and an 11-inch base.

The lightweight high-grade aluminum construction won’t rust and features a heavy-duty reinforced top for extra strength. An oil- and gas-resistant rubber pad on the top creates a non-slip surface that keeps bikes from slipping off. An arched base keeps it stable on uneven ground.

STORAGE STAND This strong aluminum stand features an integrated storage unit for tools, chemicals or other riding essentials. The compartment’s latching lid covers up three separate storage areas; one large and two small. The compartment walls are attached and integrated into the stand’s side tubes. A custom rubber top keeps bikes firmly planted. It’s available in a black finish. When your customers come calling in need of a stand, point them to the Moose Racing catalog and show them all these great options. There’s sure to be a fit among this broad lineup. ■

con TiMax Titanium Riding Collection is a blend of the brand’s streetwise character, brash styling and no-nonsense performance – all mixed in with a healthy helping of extra attitude for good measure.

The TiMax jacket was so popular in its first incarnation that Icon brought it back, with updated features as well as a full collection that includes pants and two glove options. The black leather TiMax jacket is perforated in all the right spots for some ventilation, and the shoulders and back have titanium-reinforced textile inserts. The Icon Sport fit means the jacket has slightly pre-curved arms and a cut that is loose enough to allow a sportbike rider to tuck comfortably, but tailored enough to keep the rider aerodynamic at speed. The inside of the TiMax jacket has a removable, insulated SatinCore vest liner and D3O impact protectors in the shoulders, elbows and back. The jacket is available in sizing from S all the way up to 4XL. Icon designed the TiMax jeans specifically for sportbike riders. The dark blue denim is durable, while integrated flex zones and stretch knee panels ensure a maximum range of motion. There are three interior knee pockets, allowing for options when it comes to positioning the

included D3O knee impact protectors. Reflective black YKK zippers offer added reflectivity without bringing any neon into the mix. The jeans, available in men’s sizes, 30 to 40, have Icon’s Attack fit, meaning they are form-fitting so no loose material is flapping in the breeze while riding. It’s a safe bet that any customer wearing the TiMax long glove is going to feel like a knight. The floating titanium knuckle, finger and cuff plates look positively Medieval without hindering motion. Underneath the titanium is a black leather backhand with mechanical expansion panels. The Battlehide goatskin palm offers up durability and control feedback, and the dual wrist closure keeps the gloves secure in the unfortunate instance of a fall. Like the TiMax jacket, this glove is a classic Icon piece that is making a comeback. The TiMax short glove is exactly what it sounds like. The titanium cuff plate is traded in for a shorter gauntlet, but the dual wrist closure is still there for a snug fit. Sizing for both gloves goes from S to 3XL. ■

Potential tragedy struck in May 2016 when Destry was diagnosed with Leukemia, a cancer of blood-forming tissues that can be a very challenging disease to treat. It’s been almost a year now since the first diagnosis, and Destry was recently declared in remission. While he has not been cured, the longer that he is in remission, the better. However, in a cruel twist of fate, Destry’s wife Charlotte was recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Destry: My wife, Charlotte, is doing well, but we ran into a few bumps after her mastectomy when they discovered that four of her five lymph nodes were still positive. They decided to hit her with a stronger chemo, so she took a few steps back and has been having a tough time. She still has a few more surgeries plus 6 weeks of Radiation after her chemo treatment she’s going through right now, but her prognosis is good once all of this is done. It’s been a tough year, but you seem pretty upbeat. What are you plans going forward? Destry: My daily routine has changed a lot with our priorities with the family and now the new Purvines DA8 Team. I definitely seem busier now than I ever have, but I look forward to seeing what we can build with the great sponsors we have. I’m slowly getting back into riding shape, and I’m certainly busier now running a team then I ever have been. It’s hard sometimes balancing everything and not being back to 100 percent yet, but we’ll get there. Tell us about your work with Yamaha bikes? Destry: Most people don’t know, but we actually don’t have any deal with Yamaha. Ron Purvines along with Collin Woolsey, I, and our riders all discussed what bike they would want to ride and the Yamahas got the most votes. Ron wanted to build a team with the best equipment so our riders had the best shot to win on and I think we’re proving that with our results. Ron actually purchased over 25 brand new 2017 Yamahas through John Burr, along with parts. We hope to be able to work with Yamaha next year and have an even stronger presence out here on the west coast and then expand from there.

We met up with Destry and Cooper at Southern California’s Glen Helen Raceway where the pair were training and doing some fun laps as Cooper trains for the WORCs Series in which he currently leads the points chase in the Pro 2 Lites class. Parts Magazine: First things first, what’s your prognosis? Destry Abbott: My prognosis has been looking good, considering where I was at less than a year ago. I went into remission pretty early which was good with the type of Leukemia I had (ALL PH Positive). I’m done with my major treatments, but still have to take a chemo pill every night for the rest of my life along with a chemo IV maintenance every month (for 2 years). If you’re comfortable with talking about it, how is your wife doing?

So, our program for 2017 is with Ron Purvines, he went and bought all the teams bikes. He is passionate about racing and he stepped up. We have six pro riders, including (former WORCS Champion) Gary Sutherland. Our main sponsors include Thor and FMF, but there are a ton of others who have helped out. Tell us a little about your relationship as dad/coach/ manager for your son Cooper. Destry: It’s so awesome and I can’t even explain to you how proud I am of him! What most people don’t know is that he just started racing a little over four years ago. He was into other sports (baseball, track, and football) and that was his priority. I’m not one to push him to do something he’s not passionate about and he felt a lot of pressure trying to follow in my footsteps. I told him it’s about having fun and once he took that pressure off himself; he really started loving riding and racing. Now it’s all he can think about and he does everything he needs to on and off the bike to really take it to the next level.

Let’s talk about some of the highlights of your career. What is your favorite 6-Days? Destry: That’s a tough one! I’ve done eight ISDEs and loved just about all of them. Italy was my first one and that was special since I was on a club team and won a special test and got a Gold Medal that year. Germany was probably one of my favorite times, because of the team we had and also the first time our USA Trophy Team finished on the podium in a long time. I always liked how we would all come together even when we raced for other manufacturers. It’s pretty amazing to represent your country while getting to race motorcycles. What’s your favorite off-road series? Destry (8) leads son Cooper (120) through a woods section. Though he earned most of his titles as a desert racer, Destry excels in all terrains and has several ISDE Gold Medals to prove it. Cooper hopes to qualify for his first ISDE this year.

He’s still learning, but he’s been doing awesome. It’s great to have him surrounded with some many of our great DA8 Athletes we have in Arizona to guide him too. Cooper: My dad is such a great rider. He can show me the fast lines around a track if I can keep up with him. When he first started riding again (after the chemo) he wasn’t as fast and I could keep up easier. But he’s getting in shape now and he’s tough to keep in sight. Tell us about your long history with Thor and Parts Unlimited.

PROFILE

Destry: Dang, I’ve been with Thor/Parts Unlimited for a long time and they’re a great company to be around! They really do care about our sport and growing it. I remember signing with them a long time ago before they actually had a lot of off-road riders. It was really cool wearing awesome gear at the off-road events and knowing other people were wishing they were riding for them too. James Zomerdyke has been my long time contact and we consider him and his family a great friend like the rest of the Thor staff.

Destry: There are so many series now, but growing up I really liked the Hare & Hounds, Endurocross, WORCS, GPs and ISDE Qualifiers. If there is anything you’ve always wanted to say in an interview, say it here. Destry: First, I want to thank everyone. I was overwhelmed at the support that came out and from people who I didn’t even know. My wife Charlotte and I thank everyone. It’s nice to have people supporting us during this hard time. We are part of an amazing sport. This sport and the people I’ve had an opportunity to meet throughout the industry and racing are fantastic! The off-road community is more like a family and I’m blessed to have met so made so many friends throughout my career. This is why I’m excited to see where we can take the Purvines DA8 team, so that my son and the rest of our team have the opportunity to experience that same feeling of factory support. With Ron and my experience I really feel we can take this team to the next level. ■

here’s a new tire in town that everyday sportbike riders will want to know about. It’s Michelin’s Power RS, and at a glance these tires are dead ringers for some barely street-legal race rubber.

However, appearances are deceiving, say the design team at Michelin. The Power RS tires, now topping Michelin’s popular Pilot Power sport range, aren’t strictly track tires. They’re sport-orientated road tires that just happen to be right at home during the occasional track-day action. All this is the result of two years of research followed by two more years of extensive development and testing, and all of Michelin’s sport, race and marketing departments were involved. What they say they’ve come up with is “the perfect sport tire.” Strong words, but available in a dozen sizes (three fronts and nine rears) there’s a Power RS to cover everything from entry-level sport singles to hyper-powered superbikes to those fat-tired sport cruisers and they have plenty to offer across the board. Michelin carefully engineered that near-slick tread pattern to cover just over 6 percent of the total tread surface. This performanceinspired design offers outstanding grip on wet and dry roads and exceptional straight-line stability.

The Power RS is Michelin’s new sportbike tire that’s designed for serious performance.

The design-mandate for the Power RS was a greatly improved dry grip, more stability overall, enhanced feel and real agility. With the majority of sportbike riding done on dry roads, that’s where the Power RS excels. The improvements come from the inclusion of two main technologies — Michelin’s ACT+ carcass architecture and 2CT and 2CT+ Dual Compounding. Michelin’s Adaptive Casing Technology (ACT+) reduces the maximum rigidity in the crown area while maintaining just the right degree of rigidity in the sidewalls and shoulder areas at normal operating pressures. The result is strong straight line and lean-angle stability, a combination designed to minimize drifting in the curves. The 2CT and 2CT+ compounding employs a long-wearing 100 percent Silica center-tread compound coupled with a 100 percent Carbon Black lateral compound on the shoulders. The result here is great wear resistance in the center area of the tread combined with a significantly enhanced grip on the shoulders. That Dual-Compound 2CT+ does even more for the Power RS rear tires. Here the center area’s harder compound has been extended underneath the softer rubber on the shoulders to give the tires better rigidity at high lean angles and more stability during hard cornering and strong acceleration. This dry-surface grip doesn’t come at the expense of wetweather performance, either. Those 100 percent Silica center tread compounds, combined with the Power RS’s carefully placed tread siping see to that. In fact, Michelin’s own testing has shown the Power RS improves upon the already exceptional wet grip of the Pilot Power 3 by up to three-seconds a lap on the company’s 1.2 km track. ■

LUBRICANTS

Performer’s Choice

High Quality Oils for Sportbike Riders

FUCHS-Silkolene’s PRO4 line of synthetic lubricants are specially formulated to meet the needs of serious sportbike riders, whether they’re on the track or the street.

I

t happens all the time and the confusion is understandable. Faced with a bewildering array of oils to choose from, a serious sport-rider/track-day enthusiast can be hard-pressed to make a choice.

The PRO4+ 5W-40 and 10W-50, the PRO4 Energy 10W-30 and PRO4 XP 10W-40, 15W-50, 10W-50 and 10W-60 are all readily available and ready to exceed the demands of serious sport riders.

However, an impressive number of professional racers and factory race teams don’t have that problem. According to FUCHS-Silkolene, some of the biggest race teams in the world — names like BMW Motorrad, Ducati Corse, teams Norton, Triumph, Kawasaki, Honda, and Aprilia — have all turned to the oil they’ve come to trust, FUCHS-Silkolene. The newly redesigned FUCHS-Silkolene website even features some rider and team endorsements all crediting the performance of those Silkolene oils.

Choices here? It’s easy. Those PRO4+ blends, the 5W-40 and 10W-50, were initially developed for extreme race conditions, Silkolene’s highest-level lubricant. They’re extremely popular with big V-twin riders and with bikes like Ducatis and Aprilias.

More than that, many of these championship-winning teams have come to consider Silkolene and the Silkolene engineers and chemists as part of their own R&D departments, citing the comprehensive oil-sampling service Silkolene offers so factory race-team engineers and tuners can know exactly what’s happening inside the engines they produce. Of course, this knowledge is of great benefit to the development teams at Silkolene, as well. The latest result of all this is the Silkolene PRO4 family of oils, a full range of fully synthetic lubricants that are race tested, race proven and feature technologically advanced additive packages. Parts Unlimited has them all.

The PRO4 Energy 10W-30 was developed in partnership with Honda’s Motorcycle Development Institute (HMDI). It’s especially suited for close-tolerance engines and provides improved protection. Independent testing has shown a 10 percent jump in fuel economy, reduced oil consumption and horsepower boosts up to 9 percent. Honda recommends it for most of its motorcycles. The PRO4 XPs, 10W-40, 15W-50, 10W-50 and 10W-60 offer incredible shear stability and a high level of engine protection. Besides reducing friction, FUCHSSilkolene says it increases drain-down time for cold-start protection, bumps up horsepower and can even show a significant improvement in fuel economy. All confirmed by independent testing. ■

DRIVE CHAINS

Street and Strip

Chains Built for Serious Racing When your customers need a chain designed for the extreme load of drag racing, point them toward the new 530PRODR. The ZXW series is a perfect match for both racing and general street riding.

A

A high-performance endurance race chain requires several distinct features:

Years of research and development as well as a close collaboration with top racing teams has allowed RK Chain to develop two strong chains that are sure to impress your customers.

»» Consistent: Must reliably perform throughout the entire race. »» Fuel Efficient: Must not decrease the engine’s fuel efficiency.

chain is only as strong as its weakest link, so when you’re RK Chain and developing a new chain for motorcycle drag racing and roadracing, you can bet that super strong and technically advanced chain will be able to withstand the extreme environments of racing.

For the Strip New for 2017, the 530PRODR is a high-end drag racing chain and is used by Chip Ellis and the Junior Pippin Racing team (NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle.) The 530PRODR non-sealed drag chains have a super highest tensile strength for drag racing at 11,880 lbs. Drag racing chains must be able to withstand the extreme load of drag racing at the start of each race. The quick buildup of speed generates quite a lot of heat, which can transfer into heat friction. RK Chain’s 530PRODR components are reinforced with a heat-resistant treatment to reduce heat friction and maintain efficient horsepower delivery.

For the Street RK Chain’s other new addition is the ZXW series used for both racing and general use. Although ZXW and 530PRODR are each made for very different disciplines, both share the same racing chain technology, which has resulted in some high-performance drive chains. The ZXW features MotoGP and FIM Suzuka 8 Hour Endurance technology and has proven itself in competition

by winning 35 first place finishes out of 39 races at the FIM Suzuki 8 Hour Endurance Race.

»» Low Friction: Must not reduce power output from the engine. »» High Tensile Strength: Must be able to withstand the extreme loads of race engines.

All of these features and more are in perfect balance in the construction of the ZXW chain. RK’s ZXW series chains are ideal for high-speed, high-horsepower performance applications, large displacement and extended swingarm machines. Within a ZXW’s 120 link sealed chain, there are a total of 840 components. All 840 pieces must perform as one unit. One of the 840 components is ZXW’s XW-Ring seals. RK’s XW-Ring seals provide three contact lips and two lubrication pools to protect against dirt and debris, high-speed abrasion, heat buildup and the loss of lubricant under extreme conditions. That’s a fancy way of saying XW-Ring seals makes a chain last longer, giving your customers a better value for their money. The ZXW’s chain link configurations range from 120 to 180 links, and are available in 520, 525 and 530 pitch, in either Gold or Chrome. When RK develops a chain with a combined heritage of both drag racing and extreme endurance racing, your customers can rest assured that they’re getting the best of both racing worlds. For more than 66 years RK Chain has been committed to excellence, focusing on everything from strength and durability to performance and reliability. ■

A New Long-Life Hypersport Tire

T

he new Q3+ tire came as a performance surprise, even to the Dunlop designers who engineered it. The concept, they say, was to create a tire that delivers the same top-level hypersport performance as the already-popular Q3, but last longer doing so. In that, they succeeded. Testing showed the Q3+ to have a 30 percent longer life than the Q3, quite an accomplishment for a tire in this segment. The pleasant surprise came with the improved performance of that new long-life tire. It actually outperformed the Q3 by a wide margin. Riders could brake later, carry more lean through the corners and get back on the throttle sooner.

Designed for hard-charging sportbike riders, the new Q3+ tire delivers improved top-level hypersport performance over the popular Q3, and lasts longer.

EXHAUST

Cooling the Slingshot

The Three-Wheeler Power Pipe

Bassani’s Side Exit exhaust system helps prevent excessive heat buildup in the passenger compartment of the Polaris Slingshot.

T

he Polaris Slingshot has turned heads since the three-wheeler was first announced. Tough to pigeonhole (Is it a motorcycle based threewheeler or is it a low-slung automobile just missing one of its rear wheels?), the Slingshot is undeniably fun.

There’s more. With the addition of the optional Off-Road Down Pipe, that mounts directly to the Slingshot’s stock exhaust manifold, not only is all that heat relieved, the Slingshot gets a significant power and performance boost. Bassani testing has shown a 10 horsepower gain at the rear wheel without any special tune.

Here’s a ride putting both the driver and passenger right up front and face-to-face with the fast-paced action. The Slingshot’s gained a strong following during its relatively short time in the market.

And beyond all this, beyond the power and performance gain and the welcome relief from that passenger-seat heat, the new Bassani Slingshot Side Exit exhaust sounds great. It has an aggressive note without that annoying drone set up by the stock system.

Unfortunately, it’s also been the recipient of a fair number of complaints, mostly coming from the passenger seat. Specifically, things over there can get downright toasty. It’s the result of the Slingshot’s OE exhaust system design; it’s confined inside the bodywork right over there by the passenger seat. So, as much fun as a ride in the Slingshot can be, those rides can be cut prematurely short.

It’s perfect for everyday driving and installation is easy, requiring only the drilling of one hole in the side panel on the passenger side for the exhaust pipe to pass through. For a lot of good reasons the Slingshots have a lot of followers. Bassani’s Side Exit exhaust system corrects the one big concern they all voice – the excess heat felt in the passenger compartment. Add in the power gains the system produces and its aggressive, but agreeable, tone and the swap becomes a win/win/win situation, an easy sale to a Slingshot owner. ■

Bassani has the fix. It’s a brand-new Side Exit high-performance exhaust system just for the Slingshot. In addition to adding Bassani power and tone, it addresses that heat problem. The system is a great way to improve power and performance as well as relieve all that excess heat from Talk with your Parts rep about all the details the passenger side, heat rolling off the stock exhaust and go to www.bassanipipes.com to watch a system and becoming trapped inside the bodywork. lpinestars’ Ride Tech layers incorporate the very latest material technologies and construction techniques, and are the first thing to be put on and the last thing taken off. That said, many riders still do not realize the benefits that base layers bring to the enjoyment of motorcycling. Constructed from an innovative Dryarn polypropylene microfiber, Alpinestars’ Ride Tech base layers are specially engineered to offer ultra-lightweight performance, breathability and optimized thermo-regulation for both summer and winter riding. The main material offers some of the highest levels of insulation of any natural or man-made fiber, allowing Ride Tech garments to create a breathing barrier between the skin and outer garment. This not only acts to insulate the body, but transfers perspiration from the inside to the outside, ensuring an internal microclimate that keeps the skin dry as well as warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Race Tech summer top, bottom and short sleeve top

The Ride Tech one-piece under suit is a summer base layer designed for warm weather and optimized for use under performance racing leathers. Body-mapped with four-way stretch spandex zones in the chest and back, this under suit features mesh for additional breathability and cooling comfort. The mesh zones have been strategically positioned to work in conjunction with an outer suit’s front-facing surfaces. The versatile Ride Tech summer top and bottom can be used with one or two-piece leather suits or individually with road riding jackets or pants. Alpinestars also has a short sleeve version, which can be paired up with the pants for when the weather heats up. Base layers are a critical piece of equipment for more reasons than just offering excellent moisture-transfer management. By providing a second skin feel, thanks to the compression fit technology and tubular, seamless construction, Alpinestars tech base layers offer muchneeded support to the muscles while performance riding. Not only does muscle support reduce fatigue, improve performance and all-round comfort, but it is also critical in helping reduce injuries. By helping keep muscles in a natural and stable position, Ride Tech under layers help to stop unnecessary movement of the muscle during a slide or impact. Keeping muscles in position is also important in the seconds and minutes following riding as this significantly aids oxygen flow to the muscles thus improving recovery times.

Custom Coordination

Indian Parts Designed to Piece Together

Cross-style grips

Carl Brouhard Designs created the Elite brake arm and floor board for those new generation Indian motorcycles.

W

hen it comes to the new-generation Indian motorcycles, it wasn’t love at first sight for Carl Brouhard. Instead, it was love at first ride. After taking one out for a test ride, he knew that it was time to add Indian components to his lineup of quality bagger and V-twin parts at Carl Brouhard Designs. Brouhard’s first ride on an Indian came when a dealer near his shop in Auburn, CA, began to carry the brand. “I took one out for a ride, and I really liked the bike, how it looked and handled,” said Brouhard. “That along with the name being so strong and the history they have, and with it being a quality bike, it made sense to start making parts for them.” A number of Brouhard’s existing parts for Harley-Davidsons looked great on Indians, too, so the parts were adapted to fit. Designing parts that work for multiple OEMs and models is a great asset, but Brouhard also works to ensure no one will ever mistake his work for someone else’s.

When it comes to the company’s signature styles, Brouhard said, “we try to come up with designs that don’t mimic or look like anything anyone else has out there.”

Parts Unlimited carries an exclusive line of Carl Brouhard Designs Indian components. Each part is constructed of 6061 billet aluminum and available in black anodized or chrome. The line—including brake pedals, brake pedal covers, heel toe shifters and an array of the company’s Elite Series parts—are designed to piece together, creating a coordinated look and functionality for 2014 and newer Indians. The brake pedals as well as the brake pedal covers are designed to mount along with the Carl Brouhard Designs Elite floorboards for Indian models. The brake pedals pair with the Carl Brouhard Designs Elite brake arm, which creates a more comfortable foot position. Riders who want a sleeker look for their brake pedals can choose the Elite version, which has a narrower design and a 5¾-inch length. Like the other pedals, these coordinate with the Carl Brouhard Designs Elite floorboards and brake arms. The Elite floorboards are available for both the driver and passenger. The driver’s boards lower the foot one inch from stock, and their oversized design makes them two inches longer and half an inch wider for a more comfortable riding position. Carl Brouhard Designs also has shifter pegs that coordinate with the floorboards. Elite Series heel toe shifters replace the stock single shifter while the Carl Brouhard Designs shift arm is more traditional. Both shifters include all necessary mounting hardware. For the hand controls on an Indian, there are Cross Style grips for one-inch handlebars that feature ergonomic seamless rubber grips and billet aluminum end caps. ■

HELMETS

Track Tech, Street Comfort The Racing DNA of the Corsa R

AGV’s Corsa R

A

GV regards its full-face helmets as a sort of family, with DNA passed from one design to the other. The Corsa R carries the DNA of the premium Pista GP R race helmet, but its characteristics make it AGV’s top choice for track technology blended with comfort for the street. The Corsa R is designed to be more comfortable on longer rides, making it a better choice for street riders than the Pista GP R. The new interior construction provides a stable, pressure-free fit, but the real perk on the inside is the reversible crown pad. Each side of the pad is made of a different fabric. One side is smooth and moisture wicking for warm-weather riding, while the other side has a fleecy texture to help retain warmth on cold days. The anti-bacterial, sanitized materials keep things from getting funky, even on hot days. In addition to the climate control crown pad, the interior of the Corsa R is carefully engineered to reduce road noise. It is a significant 29 percent quieter than the Pista, making longer rides much easier on the ears. At the same time, ventilation has been improved over previous models for better airflow. A carbon-fiberglass shell is another difference between the Corsa R and its racing counterpart. The Corsa R also has a removable nose guard, wind deflector and adjustable vents.

58

PARTS MAGAZINE

J U LY 2 0 1 7

For all of the differences between the two helmet styles, the Corsa R does share a number of features with the Pista GP R. The 5mm visor, which offers more protection than its 3mm predecessor, has an Optic 1 rating for zero glare or distortion. It stays securely in place thanks to the updated and recessed lock system. Another shared feature is the updated safety release system, which enables the cheek pads to be removed while the rider is still wearing the helmet, allowing for easier removal in the event of a crash. One notable design difference in the Corsa R is the lack of the biplano spoiler, which gives the Pista GP R a distinct silhouette while improving the aerodynamics of the helmet. Riders who opt for the Corsa R but want the MotoGP look of the Pista can purchase a biplano spoiler separately. AGV applied its Extreme Standards philosophy to the design of the Corsa R, which resulted in a top five-star rating from the United Kingdom’s SHARP (Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme) helmet rating initiative. The AGV Extreme Standards program focuses on protection, fit, comfort, reliability and environmental impact. Of the many graphics options available for the Corsa R, the Rossi Goodwood and Arrabbiata are among the top sellers. There is also a plain black option for riders who want a subtle look. ■

HOSES

Handmade Hoses

Silicone Parts for Sportbikes

F

rom MotoAmerica to MotoGP, plenty of top roadracing teams have turned to SamcoSport for its handmade silicone hoses. The U.K.-based company has produced radiator hoses, vacuum tubing and clamp kits for motorcycles for more than two decades, and the list of racing championships they have been a part of are beginning to stack up. SamcoSport’s radiator hose kits are available in factory-matched colors, so riders can easily match their hoses to their bikes. Available colors include blue, red, orange, green, white and black. Among the popular new sportbike applications available are the 2017 Honda CBR1000RR and the BMW S1000RR, and there are many applications for sportbikes across the major European and Japanese OEMs. The radiator hoses are all handmade inhouse at the company’s headquarters in Wales. The high-end racing quality of the hoses begins with the materials themselves — the European-sourced silicone is free of rubber fillers that can reduce longevity and performance. The clamp kits feature marinegrade stainless steel clamps with rounded edges, smooth inners and polished surfaces. The radiator hose kits offer improved flow for better cooling, with systems running up to 9 degrees cooler than stock.

SamcoSport’s line of high-quality silicone hoses, vacuum tubing and stainless steel hose clamps offer your customers a nice upgrade over the OE components.

Every product is hand-inspected before it is shipped out; even the insides of the hoses are checked via a tiny camera that can be fed into the tubing. SamcoSport is so confident in the quality of their hoses that the company offers a lifetime guarantee against any natural defects. The vent/vacuum tubing by SamcoSport is color-matched to the radiator hoses for a coordinated look, with blue, red, orange and green options. The tubing can be used for carburetor breather and air pipes, radiator overflow and emission air pipes. The tubing arrives in ten-foot lengths. SamcoSport has supported motorcycle roadracing teams for nearly as long as it has been producing products for the two-wheeled world. Here in North America, the company has sponsored Roadrace Factory since 2012.

The team has found success in MotoAmerica, with rider Jake Gagne taking the Superstock title in 2015. This year, the team has returned to the premier Superbike class for the second season, with Gagne again at the controls. Mud Madness

New UTV Tires and Wheels

W

hen it comes to UTV rubber, there are offroad tires, and then there are off-road tires. You know the kind, the ones with the beefy, menacing lugs and tread design meant for serious action in the dirt and mud. That’s the new Aggro tire, available exclusively through Parts Unlimited from Moose Utility Division. Moose Utility Division is also debuting a new UTV and ATV wheel, the 112X, a wheel built for the newer generation of heavy, high-powered four wheelers. Just one glance at the Aggro tire and it’s apparent that Moose Utility Division set out to design a tire that will really perform, even when your customers are slogging their machines through thick, muddy terrain. The deep and aggressive tread will provide maximum traction and minimal slippage — just set the course, give the gas and go go go. That tread also features a continuous pattern at the center of the tire, a design that really helps improve steering in that deep mud.

Moose Utility Division designed the Aggro to really perform, even when your customers are slogging their machines through thick, muddy terrain.

Knowing the off-road environment comes with its own unique challenges — many of them sharp, pointy and unfriendly to air-filled rubber — Moose Utility Division gave the Aggro tire an 8-ply construction for a high level of puncture resistance. THE AGGRO TIRE COMES IN THE FOLLOWING FOUR SIZES: SIZE

If your customers are in the market for new tires, it’s also a good time to point out Moose Utility Division’s new 112X wheel. This good looker features a split, eight spoke design for superior strength that handles any terrain. The 112X is available in four different sizes, each rated for a different weight capacity. The 12x7 size is load-rated at 675 pounds, the 12x8 at 1,150 pounds, the 14x7 at 700 pounds, and the 14x8 at 1,300 pounds.

Like all of Moose Utility Division’s UTV and ATV wheels, the 112X is thoroughly X-rayed while on the product line to ensure that it’s free from any defects or damages. The company wants to make sure that this is one high-quality wheel. It’s gloss black with machined areas on the spokes for a nice, clean look. The wheel comes complete with a lug nut kit and valve stems. ■

Pipes, Plugs and Covers Tightening Up the New GSX-R1000

S

The Alpha T Race Series full system* exhaust for the new Suzuki GSX-R1000.

Alpha T Street Series slip-on muffler

uzuki aimed high with its 2017 model GSX-R1000 and hit a bullseye. Revamped tip-to-tail, the new Gixxer is one serious machine, and with some help from Yoshimura it just got a whole lot better.

Not skipping a beat, the R&D team at Yoshimura has come up with a whole carton-full of performance and style enhancements for the newest Suzuki. Parts Unlimited has them all, starting with an all-new Alpha T exhaust, both slip-ons and full systems*. The Alpha T Street Series slip-on, available in that cool Works Finish stainless steel, comes with a carbon fiber heatshield and removes half the weight of the big, bulky and heavy stock muffler. Along with those good looks and light weight the Alpha T’s tri-oval design and revised shape improves ground clearance, produces that famous deep and distinct Yoshimura exhaust note and truly wakes up the Suzuki’s redesigned engine. Alpha T Race Series full systems* are lightweight, easily installed and feature that no-nonsense Works Finish. There are performance gains here across the whole power and torque spectrum. Either way, slip-on or full-system, everything’s hand made to the highest quality standards and engineered with Yoshimura’s championship-winning racetrack experience.

Works Edition case savers

There’s plenty more available for that new Suzuki, too. Yoshimura has Works Edition case savers, bolt-ons designed to minimize damage from light crashes and scrapes. Machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum, they’ll install in minutes with no need to disturb the factory engine case covers or gaskets. There’s a Works Edition engine plug kit, too. Stronger, lighter, less prone to stripping than the stock units and hard anodized for a lasting finish, it’s another serious addition to a serious bike. There’s also a fender eliminator kit for the revamped GSXR1000. A precision laser-cut stainless steel bracket tucks under the tail section and the black-anodized and CNC machined light housing with a laser-etched Yoshimura logo holds four LEDs. Add in the Works Edition mirror block-off plates and bar ends and that new bike is performance and style ready for track-day action. Sure, those bar ends won’t help much in bringing down the lap times, but machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminum and hard-anodized they’re a lot better looking than the OE pieces. Yoshimura’s featherweight mirror hole caps, which cover up those ugly holes left open when the mirrors come off, have real carbon-fiber inserts in the billet aluminum bodies. Might as well look good going fast, right? ■

Yoshimura’s mirror hole caps provide a nice clean finish for when those mirrors are removed.

KPMI’s top-end service kit features tough, stainless steel valves, a specially designed piston and all the necessary parts for a rebuild.

iders faced with top-end service on a 2014 to 2016 Yamaha YZ250F are in for an unpleasant surprise. Not only will that service most likely be needed sooner than anticipated, but also those factory replacement parts are going to be real budget busters. The reasons behind both surprises are the valves — those Yamahas have Titanium intake and exhaust valves. While Titanium is lightweight, thus reducing reciprocating valvetrain mass, it’s also soft, expensive and has a short

Kibblewhite Precision Machining, Inc., (KPMI®), well known for designing and manufacturing longevity into valvetrains for more than 78 years, has an affordable and long-lasting solution. The company offers a complete top-end service kit for this application, one that not only beats OEM pricing, but also can outlast those OE counterparts by twice the factory recommended service life. KPMI’s kit includes all-new valves radically re-engineered and made from a much more durable EV8 stainless steel. Simply replacing the valves, however, would have resulted in a compression loss so KPMI has created a revolutionary piston design that incorporates convex dimples into the dome, maintaining the compression ratio at OEM specs. It’s included in the kit along with the rings, wrist pin, clips, valve springs, seals, retainers and all necessary gaskets. ■

ff-road bikes, ATVs and UTVs, sportbikes and cruisers, they’ll all need a clutch replacement sooner or later. There are plenty of choices, too, but one of those aftermarket options, the DPK Clutch Kits from DP Brakes, is a standout in this crowd. The DPKs have a lot to offer and Parts Unlimited has them, in multiple applications.

First of all, these are clutch kits coming from DP Brakes, where they know a thing or two about friction materials. Consequently, those DPK clutch packs not only last way longer than OE, but that long-life performance is strong, smooth and fade free. DP includes everything needed for the job. Those high performing special-design frictions are coupled with precision-ground steels and a full set of heavy-duty springs. It’s all packed in a good-looking plastic box that is a cinch to merchandise. Sliding a DPK kit across the counter lets a rider feel he or she is getting something special, and they are. Installing a DPK kit is easy, too. The all-important stack height is always correct, the fit is spot-on and there’s no need to pre-soak. Everything’s ready to go right out of the box. ■
