Celebrating A Life of Achievement by D on Em de

The amazing Sturgis Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award trophy was created by noted motorcycle historian and sculptor Jeff Decker. It was my great honor to be the presenter of the award to Fred, along with Myrick Robbins (right) director of the Sturgis Hall of Fame Museum. Photos by Rod Olson/Noxbox Photography

S

omething that made this year’s Sturgis Rally extra special for me was to be the presenter to Fred Fox of the 2018 Sturgis Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award at the awards breakfast in Deadwood. I’ve known Fred for over forty years and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of such recognition. If you’ve never heard the story, Fred started his distributing business by himself in 1967 as the only employee with his inventory in his garage. After a few years, he rented a warehouse in Edgerton, Wisconsin, hired some people and built LeMans Corporation up from there into the world’s largest motorcycle aftermarket distribution business. Today it includes Parts Unlimited, Drag Specialties, Parts Europe, Arctiva, Icon, Moose Racing, Moose Utility Division, THOR MX, and Z1R. The Fred Fox I have known through the years is a gambler, but what he bets on is people. In my case, I started a little business in 1990, thinking it would be mostly about publishing motorcycle history books. What got in the way of that plan, however, was an idea I had for a “house” magazine for Fred’s distributing companies, Parts Unlimited, Drag Specialties and in recent years, Parts Europe.

So I called Fred one day in late-1992 and gave him my idea. He and I put the details together over the phone and everything we agreed to do then is still – 25 years later – how we work with LeMans Corporation. A written agreement was never necessary. NVP Product Expo In this issue, we feature a report on the company’s recent convention in Madison. It had a joint purpose that began with the long-running “NVP” (National Vendor Presentations) where Parts Unlimited’s top vendors update and educate the sales force about their products for 2019. The other part of the event was the Product Expo, a first class trade show for Parts Unlimited’s dealers to come and see new products that motorcycle, UTV and snowmobile riders will be asking about in the months to come. And lastly, for those of you in snow country, be sure to check out the special Snow section starting on page 52. Now is the time to get stocked up and you’ll find lots of interesting new products there for the season ahead. ■ Ride Safe!

standings. In 2018, numerous privateers gravitated to the championship-winning race bike – choosing to pilot the Scout FTR750 in AFT competition. Nothing better exemplifies this than the 15 Scout FTR750s that appeared in the Springfield Mile II Main event.

In the final lap of the Springfield Mile II, fellow Indian Wrecking Crew rider Bryan Smith passed Mees and captured his first win of the 2018 season. The second-place finish was enough to lock-in the 2018 title for Mees.

As of press time there were still two more races left in the 2018 season, the Minnesota Mile and Meadowlands Mile. ■

Though the Springfield Mile II marked his first win of the season, this was Smith’s fifth time reaching the podium in 2018. Smith strategically sat out during the Peoria TT on August 18 to provide additional rest for a broken bone he’s been healing since crashing at the Texas Half-Mile in April. Smith last raced at the Black Hills Half-Mile on August 7, where he placed third. After more than 60 years away from flat track racing, Indian Motorcycle has captured consecutive Manufacturer’s Championships and back-to-back rider titles with Mees winning in 2017 and 2018. The Indian Motorcycle factory team dominated the 2017 schedule and swept first, second and third-place overall

NEWS EVENTS 51st Annual Mammoth Motocross SCENES FROM THE MOUNTAIN Photos by Kinney Jones

S

ince 1968, racers have descended on Mammoth Lakes for the storied Mammoth Motocross race, an annual event that has drawn such notable champions as Ricky Carmichael, Jeremy McGrath, Ron Lechien, Bob Hannah, and Ryan Villopoto to name a few.

In fact, off-road champion Sutherlin earned himself a second place overall after going 3-2-5-1. The legendary McGrath rounded landed in the top 10 after a DNF in the first moto thanks to a blown engine. He went 6-4-3 in the remaining motos.

Now in its 51st year, the Mammoth Motocross is still going strong and is billed as the oldest continuously running motocross race in the USA. It still attracts riders from all over the world to race and take part in the fun summertime tradition.

The Mammoth Motocross got its start in 1968 after Don Rake and some friends decided they wanted to hold a race in Mammoth Lakes, and moved to build a world-class track 8,000 feet up in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. With the backing of Dave McCoy and his Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, the event was launched and history was made.

Photographer Kinney Jones was in attendance at this year’s race in June and snapped some great images of THOR MX riders Jeremy McGrath and Gary Sutherlin wicking things up in the veteran +30 Pro Class.

Enjoy Kinney’s photos from this year’s festivities.

Now in its 51st running, the Mammoth Motocross is a hugely popular race weekend that attracts amateur and pro riders from all over the world for a chance to compete in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

For two full days, dealers pack into the Monona Terrace’s convention hall to see what is essentially the Parts Unlimited catalogs come to life for a hands-on look at what all those vendors are bringing to the market. The Expo is the epicenter of the LeMans universe as dealers, reps, vendors and LeMans support staff gather together. In addition to all that in-person product handling, dealers had the opportunity to get detailed product education and sales training from vendors such as AMS Tires, Custom Dynamics, Dunlop Motorcycle Tires, Michelin, Moose Utility Division and SENA communications. Another big highlight of the Expo is the popular Night of the Stars. Given that NVP is the annual gathering spot for All Things LeMans Corporation, the company makes sure to honor the combined Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties sales force for their record-breaking sales successes. We’re talking about recognizing the very same Parts and Drag sales reps you work with all year for killer sales figures. When you see and hear their successful results for the year, there is no mistaking that this combined team is the most power sales force in the Powersports marketplace. On the night of the show’s first day, the dealers, vendors and sales reps all gathered at the Terrace’s rooftop deck for the annual Meet & Greet/Bike Show. This annual event gives those attending the perfect chance to reconnect, enjoy refreshments and check out an array of custom metric and V-twin machines customized, built or restored by their peers. They are also given the opportunity to vote on their favorite machines, with People’s Choice winners chosen for both metric and V-twin classes. This year’s winners include a radically hand-built custom cruiser and a flashy, tricked-out stunt bike.

WI, were getting the jumpstart on their competition by previewing the hot new products and sales programs that will be available when spring officially starts in 2019.

And, for five years running now, the Michelin Power Jam rocked downtown Madison’s Majestic Theater. It was here that the talented musicians among the LeMans staff, Parts and Drag rep force, and vendor lineup delivered a night of hot-and-heavy rock and roll and blues.

The Parts Unlimited NVP Product Expo offers dealers from around the country a hands-on first look at all the hot new parts, accessories, apparel, tools and equipment from more than 170 LeMans vendors. We’re talking everything from riding jackets, exhaust and brake supplies to audio equipment, helmets, touring luggage, and much more.

With 2019 now clearly on the horizon, Parts Unlimited dealers and vendors can look forward to attending the spring NVP Product Expo now in its new location in Louisville, KY at the KICC Convention Center. That new venue is shaping up to be a powerhouse event with more than 300 planned displays and plenty of dealer training. Talk with your Parts rep about attending the new show.

Decked Out

2019 Off-Road Line Unveiled

T

ake a look through the Parts Unlimited Off-Road catalog, and you will see a huge assortment of parts and accessories from Moose Racing.

Hard parts for off-road motorcycles were the first products available from the company when it got its start just over 30 years ago, but Moose Racing has also built a reputation as a producer of quality, durable off-road apparel that is built to last. Apparel from Moose Racing includes the M1 line of semi-ventilated jerseys and pants, which have both been updated for the upcoming riding season. Designed with hard riding in mind, the M1 pieces are ideal for motocross or trail racers. The M1 jersey is made of semi-ventilated polyester with a round comfort collar, which helps prevent roost from sneaking under the jersey. The latest iteration has improved ventilation with panels of micromesh in the non-roost zones. The new jersey also has sleeves that are articulated forward more, giving a better rider attack position and eliminating excess fabric. The quick-drying fabric draws moisture away from the skin quickly to keep the rider dry and comfortable. Stretch mini-cuffs keep the sleeves in place without being restricting, and the sublimated graphics are available in seven color schemes that all have a matching pant. Sizing is from small to 3XL. The coordinating M1 pants are constructed from a highdenier polyester chassis with double- and triple-stitched seams, and the pre-bent ergonomic design means the pants don’t need to be broken in. While they are as durable as ever, the new version of the pants is a lighter weight. The seat panel is reinforced for additional abrasion resistance. The knees are oversized for optimal range of motion, while full grain leather inner panels provide an extra layer of protection. The knees of the pants have gotten an update, with a new structured mesh panel that promotes improved ventilation. Sizing ranges from 28 inches to 42 inches, and a three-point waist adjustment system provides a tailored fit. Moose Racing combines materials and styling to not only create durable, comfortable racewear, but to also produce apparel that stays on trend. Moose Racing’s designers have honed the fit of the company’s racing-centric chassis over the years, and these days, changes are focused on small adjustments for durability and style.

MOOSE RACING

Moose Racing’s 2019 M1 racewear lineup is as good looking as it is tough and hard-working.

The M1 gear reflects a more form-fitting, athletic fit that is preferred by ultimate-performance-minded riders. The integrated stretch panels are best utilized with this kind of fit, allowing each piece to move comfortably with a rider’s body despite the more tailored styling. Whatever the style trends may be, having long-lasting racewear never goes out of style. Moose Racing designers opt for polyester and nylon materials that have a heavier gauge in areas where it’s needed and a lighter gauge in low-stress areas, creating a blend of durability and performance. Triple-stitched seams, high-denier material in highabrasion areas, full grain leather panels and high-quality fasteners are all aspects that keep Moose racewear intact and ready for the next round. However, the higher quality does not translate to a higher price point, as pricing is kept at a competitive level. Moose Racing also has three glove styles that work well with the M1 apparel, including the SX1, MX1 and MX2. All three of the styles have a pre-curved finger design for an ergonomic fit while riding and a size range of small to 3XL. The SX1 gloves have a polyester backhand that provides a lightweight stretch fit for maximum comfort and performance. A single layer of perforated Clarino covers the palms to provide airflow and improved feel, while a tacky grip print on the fingers and palm keeps a rider’s hands just where they need to be on the controls. An adjustable hook-and-loop closure seals the gloves from outside ele-

ments. The SX1 gloves have a sublimated design available in seven colors, including all black. The Moose Racing MX1 gloves have a nylon and polyester chassis. The sublimated backhand is spandex for a flexible fit and it is breathable, even through the graphics. Like the SX1, the Clarino palm has a tacky overlay on the fingertips and palm for extra grip and control. The lightweight MX1 gloves have an adjustable hookand-loop closure, and riders get eight color choices. The backhand got an update this season with the addition of a flexible D3O knuckle pad, which promotes roost and debris deflection. The MX2 gloves also offer a layer of tacky spots on the palm and fingertips, but this time they sit atop a single layer of synthetic leather. The backhand stretches to provide flexible comfort, and the sublimated graphics printed on it are breathable and non-fading. The glove features a slip-on design, and riders can choose from nine different color choices. Parts Unlimited carries all of the Moose Racing apparel that an off-road rider needs, right down to base layers and knee guards. In addition to racewear like the M1 line, Moose Racing also has a range of heavy-duty outerwear designed for adventure touring, including several jackets, pants and gloves. ■

Stealth Drive

Tough and Economical Drive Shafts

All Balls Racing’s Stealth Drive is a marked upgrade over the stock drive shaft assembly. Dynamically balanced, it’ll reduce noise and vibration. It’s also built for easy maintenance.

R

Featuring greaseable U-joints allows riders to quickly and easily keep those U-joints well lubricated. Furthermore, each Stealth Drive has a heavy-duty powder coat finish that has passed through rigorous salt spray testing so they stay looking good too.

All Balls Racing has a better answer. It’s the Stealth Drive, a dynamically balanced and factory-phased drive shaft assembly. Because it’s dynamically balanced, the Stealth Drive will not only reduce the noise and vibration in the cab, it will significantly extend the life of the carrier bearing and U-joints on the shaft.

All these features come in a direct-fit OEM replacement drive shaft that is guaranteed to fit and is delivered ready for installation, with the carrier bearing included and installed when applicable. Delivered as this complete balanced and phased assembly, All Balls Racing has improved the quality, reduced the expense, and simplified the assembly process for a fast, painless drive shaft installation.

eplacing the drive shaft on a Polaris RZR or Ranger is something no one looks forward to. It’s an expensive repair and replacing one OEM shaft with a duplicate factory piece is not a guarantee of getting any better performance, service or longevity.

The Stealth Drive includes heavy-duty carrier bearings when applicable and greaseable U-joints providing smooth performance, longevity and easy maintenance at a cost that’s 20 to 30 percent lower than an OEM drive shaft. Choosing an All Balls Racing Stealth Drive looks good from any angle. That lower-than-OE-cost is just the beginning. The All Balls Racing Stealth Drive is built tough. This is a drive-shaft assembly offering an extended service life. Maintaining a Stealth Drive is a lot quicker, easier and more convenient than performing routine maintenance on OEM drive shafts, too.

DRIVE CHAIN

Power Drive

Chains for Off-Road Riding, Racing MXZ4 Series non-seal Pro Supercross/motocross Racing Chains (420MXZ4, 428MXZ4, 520MXZ4) RK’s MXZ4 series chains are made for the serious Supercross and motocross racer. MXZ4 chains feature chromoly steel construction with seamless rollers and bushing. RK’s Chromized pins drastically improve the wear resistance over non-sealed chains, while absorbing shock loads from extreme jumps. All components are heat-treated using RK’s exclusive Heat Induction Transfer process.

RK Chain’s new GB520MXU chain is ideal for Supercross, motocross and off-road racing.

The 520MXZ4 has a maximum tensile strength rated at 8,000 foot pounds and is suitable for professional level 125cc to 500cc class racing. MXZ4 technology is also available in 420 and 428 mini bike pitch sizes.

2018 Supercross champions Jason Anderson and Zach Osborne both rely on RK’s racing chain, the GB520MXZ4.

Riders like 2018 Supercross champions Jason Anderson and Zach Osborne both rely on RK’s racing chain GB520MXZ4. 520MXU Sealed Supercross/motocross/off-road racing When conditions turn muddy, sandy, wet, or if riders just want a long lasting racing chain, RK offers a sealed Supercross, motocross and off-road racing chain called the MXU. RK’s GB520MXU features ultra-thin UW-seals that are perfect for bikes with narrow clearance, and deliver triple the life expectancy when compared to a non-sealed chain. The company’s UW-Ring seals utilize triple barrier grease protection, as well as anti-debris technology. This antidebris protection is vitally important to maximize chain wear life by eliminating debris friction between internal components.

RK Chain also offers its MXZ4 technology in 420 and 428 size chains.

T

hroughout RK Chain’s history, top professional Supercross and motocross riders have relied on RK’s performance to drive them to the championship podium.

The company’s list of championship riders is extensive and reads like the who’s who of racing. It stretches from past champions like Ricky Carmichael and Ryan Villopoto to current champions like Team Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jason Anderson and Zach Osborne, and Team FMF KTM Factory Racing Cody Webb and Kailub Russell. From the professional elite teams to the weekend warrior, all rely on RK’s high levels of quality and reliability.

Subtle, Not Flashy

Icon 1000 Gear for Unassuming Riders

The MH1000 collection is new to the Icon 1000 line.

The MH1000 jacket from the Icon 1000 lineup offers riders understated styling and plenty of protection.

S

ome motorcycle riders really want everyone to know that they ride motorcycles. You know the look – they are outfitted from head to toe in gear that practically screams, “Hey, look at me, I’m a rider!” There’s nothing wrong with that, and chances are good that many of them have long been sporting Icon gear as part of their attention-grabbing look.

The MH1000 jacket comes with a complete suite of D3O impact protectors, with pieces in the elbows, shoulders and back.

However, some riders prefer to live life a little under the radar, and that’s where the new MH1000 jacket and riding jeans come in. The collection is proof that not everything needs a skull or neon highlights to look good.

The MH1000 riding jeans are ideal for a rider who wants an unassuming look, making them the perfect complement to the MH1000 jacket. The relaxed-fit jeans are designed to provide all-day comfort and a look that seems natural both on and off a motorcycle. The Cordura stretch denim chassis retains the authentic look and feel of cotton denim, all while providing ease of movement on the bike and added abrasion resistance.

The MH1000 jacket and jeans allow a rider to have all the perks of riding gear without wearing something that actually looks like riding gear. And to make it even better, the MH1000 jacket also comes in a women’s cut.

The knees get extra attention, with Kevlar reinforcements plus D3O impact protectors. The protectors, which can also be found in the hips, are housed in a three-position pocket to allow for optimal placement. ■

The MH1000 gear is on the Icon 1000 label, meaning it is premium riding gear with a host of modern engineering underneath the classic style. The MH1000 jacket features a Cordura denim and leather chassis, with only the most basic badging in the form of subtle Icon 1000 embroidery.

Instead of graphics or flashy details, the chassis simply has two zippered chest pockets and two hand-warmer pockets. The Sport Fit styling includes slightly pre-curved arms and a fit that is loose without being baggy. Color options are black or green.

MH1000 gear from Icon and the other subtle options in the Icon 1000 lineup. You can head to www.rideicon.com for more info. The MH1000 is also available in a women’s cut.

Inside, a SatinCore liner is insulated for cooler weather and removable for warmer weather. Vented wrist cuffs add some more temperature control capabilities. An adjustable waist helps with getting a precise fit.

AUDIO EQUIPMENT

Sound on Display

Listening to UTV Audio at NVP When designing the Element 1 speakers, Metrix Audio made sure the mount was connected to an integrated steel plate that’s part of the speaker body. This feature lessens the chance of the cabinet breaking off of the mount.

I

f you stopped by the Hogtunes booth at NVP in Madison, then you know the company’s display was more about what you heard than what you saw. One focal point of the display was a UTV outfitted with the new Element UTV 1 audio system by Metrix Audio, part of the powersports audio family of brands that also includes Hogtunes and Wild Boar Audio. The Element line was designed specifically for UTVs, and seeing (and hearing) the Element line on a vehicle drew plenty of raves from dealers.

For a lot of dealers, all it took was a 30-second listening experience before they placed orders. Sound quality, design and the reasonable MAP price of $769.95 were factors in that decision. The Element 1 speakers are 5x7-inch ovals that can mount in front of the rider for optimal sound, but their shape keeps the rider’s view clear.

The speaker cabinets were designed with a steel plate running through the middle, with the components bolted onto either side. That plate adds stability to help eliminate the cabinet breaking off from the mount. Another detail that drew compliments from dealers is weatherproof connectors, which are included in every Element kit. The team at Metrix Audio tested the system to ensure that a rider can take their tunes through any conditions a UTV can handle. The Element components are available separately or as the UVT 1 kit (p/n 4405-0503), which includes a pair of Element 1 speakers, an Element X amplifier, a snap-in Bluetooth receiver/ controller, all wiring and zip ties. The snap-in receiver/controller has a nearly universal fit for UTVs, making it a versatile audio solution for dealers. The Element X amp is designed specifically for UTVs, and it produces 150 Watts of power when running one pair of speakers. The amp features low-level input, high-level input, adjustable gain and fully adjustable crossover for low-pass, high-pass or all-pass.

The Metrix Audio team spent a good amount of time at the 2018 NVP Product Expo in Madison explaining the details of the Element 1 UTV audio system to Parts Unlimited dealers and sales reps.

“We actually had dealers that used to work for car audio manufacturers who commented on, not only the volume of this system, but the cleverness of the design of our cabinet, so we took that as quite a nice compliment, coming from our peers,” says Metrix Audio owner/ president Mike “Pez” Pesdirz.

42

PARTS MAGAZINE

NOVEMBER 2018

The weather-resistant cast aluminum housing has two pairs of speaker wires, so a second set of speakers can plug right in. When powering four speakers, the amplifier will produce a total of 250 watts.

That versatility makes the Element system ideal for everyday riders who just want great sound and for sport riders who want to really make an audio statement with an expanded system. ■

ule and Mees had a 98-point lead over Henry Wiles, which put him mathematically out of reach. Throughout this season Mees has proved to be almost untouchable. He started the series by winning his second Daytona TT in a row, and he just kept on winning from there. He has scored ten more AFT Twins national wins and was on the podium almost every time he didn’t win, his worst finish this season being a fourth. Mees also added another X-Games Gold Medal to his accomplishments by winning his second career gold medal. This latest success came at the X Games Minneapolis 2018, held inside the U.S. Bank Stadium. Mees also earned another flat track racing Grand Slam, which means he won a Short Track, TT, Half-Mile and Mile events all in the same 2018 season. This is a feat that only a few riders have ever accomplished. His mounting victories have already moved him up into the top 10 on the all-time win list in the Grand National history books, and since he’s only in his mid-30s he should be racing and winning for a long time to come. Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties are proud to have him bearing their colors.

AFT Twins Champion and Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties/Indian rider Jared Mees leads the pack to win heat number two at the Springfield Mile.

The top of the podium was a familiar spot for Mees in the 2018 American Flat Track season. The AFT Twins Champion scored 10 wins across the board, and there are still two more races left as of press time.

“It’s always great to have committed, high-end sponsors like Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties,” Mees said, adding that companies are fantastic for himself, for flat track racing and for motorcycling in general. “I’m really pumped about our partnership. Winning the AFT Twins Championship again is payback to all my sponsors for supporting our team,” he said. “AFT is still growing and it’s been an amazing season for all of us.”

AFT SINGLES Shayna Texter came off of a five-win 2017 AFT season that upped her all-time AFT Singles wins mark to 11. In 2018, Shayna has support from Husqvarna Motorcycles, Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties, and she added several more victories to her winning record. Born into a racing family, Texter was riding and racing from a young age. In 2011, she won the AMA GNC2 Pro National in Knoxville, IA to make history as the first female rider to win an AMA National. She raced the AFT Singles class in 2017 scoring five victories and four podiums on her way to third in the 2017 points standings. Texter is currently a top contender for the 2018 AFT Singles Championship. As of press time, Texter sits third overall in

points, with two victories, three second place finishes, two third place finishes and 11 top-ten finishes. It’s an impressive record for Shayna, racing the #52 Husqvarna and riding for her own team, ST52 Racing. “As a rider and new team owner, I understand the value of having the support of great sponsors,” said Texter. “Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties are perfect examples, and I couldn’t be happier having them on my team.” The collaboration with Husqvarna Motorcycles, which has a long history in motorcycle manufacturing and racing dating back to 1903, opens the door to more manufacturer involvement going forward for more riders and more brands. Texter’s pioneering work with Husqvarna is good for her ST52 team and good for American Flat Track. Support from Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties blends well with the team. Texter is a great inspiration for female riders wanting to join motorsports, and has taken on the position as a strong American role model for girls. She says she “would love to get more girls involved with motorcycles, especially in the sport of flat track. To see the looks on the little girl’s and women’s faces, and when they tell you that you’re an inspiration, this encourages me to keep riding.” ■

»» Parts Magazine would like to congratulate Mees and Texter on a stellar year of riding!

SNOWMOBILE MARKET REPORT

2019 SNOWMOBILE MARKET REPORT HOT TRENDS FOR THE SNOW SEASON

A

s snowmobiling continues to mature, rider needs and preferences are constantly evolving. Here’s a look at some of the trends that dealers can turn into winter profits by stocking, displaying, and marketing to contemporary snow riders.

ACCENT ON APPAREL

The uncertainties of the weather are driving more and more snowmobilers to travel far from home to ride. Thus, many are encountering environmental conditions that differ significantly from their home area and therefore require different apparel than their normal gear. For example, American riders heading to Canada need to be prepared for much colder temperatures with more brutal wind chills from higher speeds and more miles on the trail than usual. More heavily insulated suits and more substantial layering garments are needed for these sometimes-extreme conditions.

Eastern and Midwestern sled heads on both sides of the border who venture to the Rocky Mountains to ride find that they need suits with lots of adjustable venting, like Arctiva’s new Summit shells. Also in demand are easily-shed layering garments that will allow riders to react to quickly-changing temperatures and conditions at various altitudes in riding that can be physically very demanding. Again, Arctiva has a variety of options to get that layering just right. Many riders now use multiple suits for these differing conditions, so dealers should stock apparel for conditions found elsewhere, and always ask their customers where they are going to be riding to make sure that they get all the right apparel for those conditions. Hand protection is evolving, too. Many who ride in very cold conditions are now using handlebar gauntlets and wearing very lightweight gloves underneath. The new

Arctiva SC1 short glove for sno-cross racing is hand wear that is well suited for this application. Another emerging hand wear trend is the “touch” glove with conductive fingertips that allow a rider to use a smart phone or GPS device without removing the glove.

Any new higher-end helmet should have a helmet bag to protect it when not in use, so remind helmet buyers that they need to properly care for their new investment in head protection.

HELMET HAPPENINGS

The helmet market is more dynamic now than ever before. Experienced trail riders are increasingly seeking better helmets with superior fit and more space in front of the face and chin. The trend for these riders is definitely to more fully featured modular helmets with drop-down internal sun shades, like the Arctiva Solara which is available with or without a heated shield. The new Arctiva Rise Summit moto-style helmet also raises the bar in the never-ending quest for better head protection. The dual-density expanded polystyrene inner shell is constructed with the MIPS® Brain Protection System that’s designed to reduce rotational motion for better protection of the brain when subjected to an angular impact. Many younger trail riders are interested in the emerging dual-sport type winter helmets featuring the sno-cross racer look, but with the warmth, convenience, and expanded peripheral vision of a full face shield. The new Arctiva Range snow helmet addresses this trend perfectly and is also available with or without a heated shield.

Tracks continue to get longer, track lugs continue to get taller, and the number of replacement track options continues to grow, allowing riders to swap out a stock track to tailor their sled for their specific riding style. However, taller lugs aren’t always what a rider needs. Most do not know that the weight and windage of every additional quarter inch of lug height can steal as much as 5 mph from the top end of a sled. So your ice racers, casual drag racers, and others concerned with speed are better served with a lower profile track. Furthermore, many riders have the idea that tall tracks don’t need ice studs, but that’s a major fallacy. Nothing maximizes acceleration, minimizes braking distance, and prevents spin-outs on ice like metal track studs. David Wells photo

Fortunately the track and traction manufacturers now offer a wide selection of traction products for riders who have to deal with the slippery stuff. From the Camso ICE series of pre-studded tracks and Tracktion series of pre-holed tracks to the vast selection of studs from well-known traction vendors like Woody’s, any rider can get exactly what is needed for that custom track installation.

SNOWMOBILE MARKET REPORT

TRACK TRENDS

Note that the thin single-ply tracks require studs with larger heads to prevent pull-through problems. Consult your Parts Unlimited sales rep and 2019 Snow catalog for more details.

VINTAGE ADVANTAGE

Vintage snowmobiling, including restoring, exhibiting, and riding old snowmobiles remains one of the hottest trends in the sport. Beyond the obvious consumables and wear items, Parts Unlimited dealers can also take advantage of this trend by offering specific products to help restore and operate these older machines. For example, a variety of Saddleskin replacement sled seat covers are available from Saddlemen Seats. And octane boosters from Klotz, PJ1 and Maxima can help with those old high-compression engines that were engineered to run on premium leaded gasoline. While winter riding isn’t quite here yet, dealers can start to get products out the door to help customers prepare for the season. They can also focus on this year’s trends to see how to best serve their customers come this snow season. Until then, all eyes are on the weather. ■

Snow Success

From the Classroom to the Trails

C

urve Industries Inc. has spent the past 10 years enjoying sales growth. The company relentlessly promoted an ever-growing line of innovative snowmobile skis, introduced welcome new accessories, pursued strategic partnerships, signed with successful race teams, and expanded into foreign markets.

“It’s a very exciting time for us here at Curve as we continue to grow and make a name for ourselves in the snowmobile and greater powersports industry,” says the company’s marketing direct, Cody Schuster. Now many of Curve’s innovative products are available through Parts Unlimited. The XS platform is Curve’s standard trail performance ski.

Curve Industries’ history dates back to 2002 when CEO and founder Nick Pryputniewicz (a former snocross racer) and his partner Sean Stumvoll (an avid motocross rider) had the idea to develop a unique new variable-geometry snowmobile ski while they were students at the Rochester Institute of Technology in western New York. After a lengthy product development process, the two launched Curve Industries with the shipment of their first set of skis in 2008. Since then, magazine tests have often lauded Curve’s line-up of skis, including the XS trail ski and XSM deep-snow skis. The XS platform is Curve’s standard trail performance ski, offering predictable cornering performance, reduced tracking, low steering effort and maximum durability. Built using durable UHMW polyethylene, the skis feature a wide intake area for better snow manipulation.

Curve’s XSM deep-snow skis are great for everything from trail riding to deep mountain powder.

They are also shaped in a parabolic design for a greater edge surface area, and designed with a unique single keel for less steering effort. The XS also offers the ability to be tuned to a distinct riding style with the use of Curve’s many accessory offerings – it’s the ski of choice for many XC teams. Curve’s XSM deep-snow skis offers the versatility of being swapped from one side of a snowmobile to the other, depending on whether the machine is used for trail riding or mountain endeavors.

Parts Unlimited also carries several other Curve products, including mounting hardware and loop plates.

In deep mountain powder, the unique design molded into the bottom of the ski engages with the snow to create a steerable edge, allowing riders to sidehill and carve more easily and with greater precision. On the trail, the doublearc profile on the opposite side of the ski is said to result in aggressive turn-in as well as a reduction in darting and steering effort. ■

Exhaustive Engineering Snowmobile Performance Pipes

Bikeman’s Powder Lite slip-on line features the special Munchie Muffler, a detachable stainless steel cup that allows riders to heat up food while out on the trail.

I

t’s safe to say that the people at Bikeman Performance Plus are life-long powersports enthusiasts. Based in the small riverside community of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, BMP is surrounded by a landscape offering year-round riding opportunities. BMP offers a large selection of drivetrain, engine and traction products for Arctic Cat, Polaris, Ski-Doo and Yamaha snowmobiles, but sees a good majority of its business come from its 4-stroke and 2-stroke snowmobile exhaust options – expansion pipes, Y-pipes and muffler combinations all made with a fit and finish that makes it a shame they’re hidden away inside an engine compartment. “We engineer our performance products in a real world test environment so they will perform when used in the real world,” says Joey Strub, R&D manager, BMP. “That starts in the dyno room with the Superflow 902. It’s an environment that is completely controlled and monitored.” Following extensive testing and modifications indoors, the test unit is brought outside to face real-world applications. “If for some reason we find a discrepancy while field-testing, we will modify our dyno testing to match the conditions found on the trail, mountain or lake,” Strub says. “By doing this we can ensure that results we achieve are real and will be felt every time a customer squeezes the throttle.” “We design our mufflers to match the stock airflow and back-pressure curve to make certain that our mufflers will perform the same or better than the stock muffler and will not require any changes in the EFI tune,” Strub adds. BMP also designs its exhausts to add performance and sound great, all while dropping some weight over the stock system.

Stage 2 Diamond Drive clutch kit

He says the Full Velocity muffler offers a “mellow” tone that’s “not too loud,” the Powder Lite muffler is “more refined than a straight pipe, but allows the engine to scream,” and the Munchie muffler is outfitted with an integrated stainless steel cup, lid and latch for riders who may want to heat up food while they ride. Of course, a sled can make all the power in the world but if that power doesn’t get to the ground it is pointless. The enthusiasts at BMP have you covered there, too, with the Bikeman Clutch Kit and other tuning elements designed to help a customer’s snowmobile achieve the pinnacle of performance. ■

CARB REPAIR KITS

Carb Repair Kits

Cure for the Bad Gas Blues

Parts Unlimited has an extensive lineup of complete carburetor rebuild kits for getting those idle snowmobiles up and running in time for snow season.

W

inter is on its way. When snowmobiles sit all summer, then fall comes and it’s time to get everything ready for riding season, don’t let gummed-up carburetors bog down your customers and keep them off the trails.

Each of the Parts Unlimited snowmobile carburetor repair kits include O-rings, gaskets, jets, jet needles, mixture screws, float bowl screws, float valve needles, and seats for all the carburetors on the machine. The OEM jet sizes and jet needles are included in each kit as well.

New for 2018, Parts Unlimited now has an extensive and economic line of complete carburetor rebuild kits to get your machine running smooth again.

As an added bonus, all applications that normally use paper float bowl gaskets are upgraded to high performance interface gasket material. And, most importantly, one part number will cover the repair of the multiple carburetors on your customers’ machines.

Most gas pumps now carry ethanol-blended fuels. Unfortunately these types of fuels can cause problems for snowmobile owners. Acting as a solvent and degreasing agent, ethanol in gas has a negative effect on the lubrication of the engine. While newer machines aren’t as affected because they are built for it, older machines will see more gummed up carburetor bowls and jets, as well as dried out rubber based O-rings and seals. To eliminate this problem, the Parts Unlimited snowmobile carburetor rebuild kits use NBR rubber material for all of the O-rings and rubber gaskets that are included in the repair kits. The high-quality NBR material is excellent at resisting ethanol, and provides a longer life for the product. 62

SNOW PLOWS

Pushing Forward

Newly Redesigned Snow Plows

W

inter is the time for a lot of fun sports – skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, plowing. Okay, plowing isn’t actually fun or a sport, but the task can at least be done with a relative amount of ease. To make sure of that, Moose Utility Division has completely redesigned its plow blades for the 2018-2019 snow season. The new push-tube plows come in two designs of various sizes and fit a range of ATVs and UTVs, and they are all made in the USA. The blades are constructed of 11-gauge steel and are now matte powder coat finished to make them even tougher against the elements. While the standard color is yellow, Moose Utility Division is offering the black blades in more sizes this year. Other changes to the plow design include an enlarged back brace and blade over-travel protection. The spring horns and pivot brackets are interlocked to the back brace for a secure fit. Heavy-duty cast skids attach to mounts that are integral to the back brace, providing further stability.

Moose Utility Division has completely redesigned its range of snow plow blades for the 2018-2019 snow season. The new push-tube plows come in two designs of various sizes and fit a range of ATVs and UTVs.

The push tubes now have a gold zinc position assembly for strong corrosion resistance. While the mounting system remains the same as in previous iterations of the snow plow, there are additional holes for the blade position and no more silver stop blocks. Moose Utility Division has both standard and county plow blades available for the push-tube design. The standard plow blade has a curved design that provides better snow and dirt roll-off at any angle. Blade lengths include 42-inch, 50-inch, 55-inch, 60-inch, 66-inch and 72-inch options.

The blades are constructed of 11-gauge steel and are matte powder coat finished to make them even tougher. Other changes to the plow design include an enlarged back brace and blade overtravel protection.

The 72-inch blade is designed for utility vehicles and ATVs of 500cc and larger, and when angled the blade will clear a 64-inch path through the snow. A rubber plow flap comes standard with the 66-inch and 72-inch blades, but is sold separately for the other sizes. The county plow blades feature a wing design and a blade curve that guides snow up and away from the surface that is being cleared. The wing measures 26 inches tall at its highest point and tapers down to 16 inches at the end. The rubber plow flap comes standard to help keep snow from blowing over the edge. Ordering the right snow plow is a matter of four simple steps. First choose the blade style and size, then select the correct bottom mount, push tube and blade lift system. Those last three variables are specific to the ATV/UTV application, so check the charts in the catalog or consult with your Parts rep to find the right combination. ■

History and Homecoming

Renthal Returns to an Original Owner

Renthal’s Ultra-Tacky grips

R

enthal will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year, and what a half-century it has been for the British company.

Founders and trials enthusiasts Andrew Renshaw and Henry Rosenthal (the company name incorporates both of theirs) founded Renthal in 1969 in Manchester, England. The first handlebars they made were constructed of surplus WWII fighter plane aluminium alloy. In 1975, Renthal expanded into the motocross market, where the company has built a reputation as a premium provider of handlebars and other products. Over the decades, Renthal has supported a larger number of talented motocross, Supercross, off-road and road race riders. As of 2018, Renthal has amassed 205 U.S. titles and 201 world titles.

Renthal got its start with handlebars, and still produces a full range of bars for off-road and on-road riding.

Parts Unlimited stocks a wide selection of Renthal parts, but the company is, of course, best known for its motocross and off-road handlebars. The full range of handlebars is made with an exclusive aluminum alloy. The range includes traditional 7/8-inch diameter handlebars, tapered 11/8-inch brace-less Fatbar handlebars and a 11/8-inch Twinwall handlebar, which is a braced handlebar utilizing two tubes, one within the other. As for grips to go with those handlebars, Renthal’s UltraTacky grips have been developed to increase traction between the glove and the grip for more control and less rider fatigue.

The new Renthal R3-3 SRS chains are designed to provide high performance and long life.

64

The unique compound constantly produces and renews a sticky surface coating. If the grip loses its tackiness, a quick wash in clean water followed by an air dry will reactivate the sticky compound. The Ultra-Tacky grips come in both Dual Compound and Tapered Dual Compound patterns.

The company’s progress hasn’t always been easy. In 2000, a factory fire destroyed the entire 41,000-square-foot manufacturing plant. The management team saw an opportunity to rebuild with the latest technology.

Among the other Renthal products available is the new R3-3 SRS chain, the successor to the R3-2. Renthal’s R3-3 chains are specially developed with the company’s SRS technology, which increases the service life.

In 2006, Renthal was sold to new owners in America. As of this year, though, ownership is back in original hands. Henry Rosenthal and Claudine Renshaw – Andrew Renshaw’s widow – purchased the brand back. Now, Renthal is under Rosenthal’s experienced eye in England again, with a young management team to help push the brand into the future.

The SRS seal, unlike a conventional O-ring, maintains a constant sealing pressure against the side plates throughout the life of the chain. Specially-formulated grease stays captive around the critical pin and bushing area longer while keeping contaminants at bay. ■

Redesigned for Performance, Safety and Comfort

The new Tech 10

A

lpinestars’ Tech 10 has been a popular motocross boot for more than half a decade and has now been completely redesigned to raise the performance and protection bar even further.

possible while ensuring it still holds up to the rigors of off-road riding. This meticulous attention to detail with the design has also resulted in a boot that has a smaller physical size and profile.

The new boot retains the Tech 10’s iconic styling, but represents an entirely new approach to rider performance, safety and comfort.

A key innovative feature of the Tech 10 is the patented Frontal Flexion Control Frame. Combining with the dual front and the rear blade connectors, the frame acts as a shock absorber by distributing energy across the boot frame while controlling forward and rearward flex.

Lighter and even more comfortable to wear in any conditions, the Tech 10 boasts a wealth of impressive upgrades and unique technologies including new, easierto-operate and more durable buckles, and a Front Flexion Control Frame. There is also a new energy dissipating shin plate, asymmetrical dual pivot arms, the patented Dynamic Heel Compression Absorber integrated into a redesigned footshell and a slimmer, more streamlined insole. The Tech 10’s redesign has been guided by three priorities for the Alpinestars technical footwear development team. They looked to improve overall functionality, performance and safety, decrease weight, and reduce material volume. Maximizing these priorities is the key achievement of the new Tech 10 and the result is an all-new boot with a greater range of movement and flexibility and better control over the flexion and torsion forces that significantly improve boot performance, giving the rider greater confidence and protection. The Tech 10 has seen every single component redesigned to reduce weight and volume, and to this end the boot uses new material composites to make it as light as

BOOTS

The New Tech 10

The frame also gives the Tech 10 a complete and seamless flexion control system, from the footshell all the way up to the shin plate, offering high performance double motion control, preventing over-compression and hyperextension. A further unique aspect of the Tech 10 is the ankle control system, which is integrated in the outer shell to allow natural ankle movement, vertical compression control and improved flex control and impact resistance. This is complemented by the new inner ankle brace and the unique heel protection innovation – the patented Dynamic Heel Compression Protector. This significantly reduces the effect of excessive, potentially injury-causing, energy being transferred to the ankle and lower leg. The Tech 10’s sole has also been completely overhauled to give riders improved grip, feel and control on the foot pegs, while offering better water and mud run-off and greater longevity and durability. ■

PISTONS

S H O W C A S E

Two-Stroke Power High-Performance Pistons

W

hile 4-strokes are still the engine of choice in many forms of professional racing, 2-strokes are alive and well in the powersports world.

ProX Racing Parts has been supporting 2-strokes since the beginning and throughout today’s modern 2-stroke resurgence. ProX 2-stroke pistons are hypereutectic cast aluminum alloy, which produces a piston with higher silicon content. This hypereutectic aluminum alloy contains approximately 18 percent silicon, which equates to added strength and resistance to thermal expansion. Heat creates big changes in pistons. A cold piston is a different shape than a piston at operating temperature. The higher silicon content of ProX cast 2-stroke pistons reduces the amount of material expansion, meaning shape change is lessened, which allows ProX pistons to be run at tighter clearances, translating to increased performance. ProX pistons are built to OEM specifications by the same manufacturers that make the OE parts, thus retaining the reliability and reputation of OEM quality.

ProX 2-stroke pistons are built to exacting OEM specifications.

Many ProX 2-stroke pistons also come equipped with skirt coating, as well as anodized crowns and ring grooves. Skirt coatings assist in piston break-in without additional wear, and anodizing helps protect the piston from the stresses of internal combustion and detonation in cases of improper tuning or jetting. All ProX piston kits include the necessary piston, ring(s), wrist pin, and circlips, all in one box and under one part number. They are available for many powersports machines, including dirtbikes, ATVs, snowmobiles and PWC. ■

SOLAR BATTERY CHARGERS

Off-the-Grid Power

24/7 Solar Charging and Monitoring

OptiMate’s solar kits serve as battery chargers during the day when the sun is out, and battery monitors at night, giving your customers up-to-date battery health information.

O

ptiMate Solar modular solar kits work 24 hours a day, always providing essential information about the battery never mind if there is sun or not. OptiMate Solar is a charger by day and then at night, it becomes a battery monitor indicating battery status, guaranteeing your customers will have battery status information available whenever they need it. During the day OptiMate’s smart solar charger-monitor not only converts solar power efficiently to provide the most effective charge, but using the latest intelligent charging technology it converts the low power from the solar panel during low sun or cloud cover to the high current pulses needed for effective charging and maintenance of 12V batteries. When the sun is not obscured the controller will switch to direct power delivery, always choosing the fastest charge mode according to sunlight strength. The most efficient charge method is automatically chosen, thanks to the TM-52x series smart charger-controller. OptiMate’s solar kits can save a dead motorcycle battery and provide safe long-term maintenance, using only the sun’s power – ideal for use in race paddocks, sheds and wherever vehicles are stored where there’s no access to a power point. At night, or when the sun is totally obscured, the controller senses that no power is being delivered and changes into a battery monitor, indicating battery status every three seconds on its easy-to-read LED panel. It draws less than 1 milli-amp during overnight monitoring.

The kit’s controller is separate from the panel allowing your customers easy access to the charger’s features. The controller can be placed on a vehicle’s seat or hung from the handlebars. This allows customers to position the solar panel toward the sun or even permanently install it. Solar kits are completely safe for use with all STD, AGM and GEL 12V batteries, from 2Ah–240Ah, and won’t overcharge or damage vehicle electronics. Each kit includes a high intensity polycrystalline panel with a 6½-foot power cable, an OptiMate O-01 weatherproof battery lead, set of OptiMate O-04 battery clips and the outdoor-rated OptiMate smart chargercontroller (TM-522) with a 3-foot charge cable. The solar panel comes with pre-drilled corner mounts for easy wall or roof mounting. The panel, smart controller and battery lead are all weatherproof and have been tested to -20°C. OptiMate Solar Modular Charge kits come in five versions: the 10W TM-522-1 (p/n 3807-0435) (12V 0.8A max) is suitable for most motorcycles and retails for $109.90. The larger 20W TM-522-2 (p/n 3807-0456) (12V 1.6A max) will charge most automotive 12V batteries and costs $129.90. If more power is needed, there is the 40W TM-523-4 (p/n 3807-0458), which retails for $169.90. All Solar kits are covered by a 3-year warranty for complete peace of mind. ■
