Fix ‘Em Up by D on Em de
The team at AFT Customs took a beat-up old 1970 Honda CL350 and transformed it into this cool looking ride they called “Coriolis.” Read about it starting on page 56. How many old used bikes are in your inventory that could be refurbished, restored or reconditioned like that? Photo by Billie Wilson
I
think everyone would agree that business could be a little better, especially with new and used motorcycle sales. There have been recent research studies that show the industry is lacking first-time buyers coming into the market at the levels we have had traditionally. Typically, the new riders are young, with many having less knowledge about motorcycles and engines in general than previous generations.
Jim Giuffra and his all-female team of motorcycle customizers. At AFT Customs in Jackson, CA, the girls ripped into the old CL350 and, with the help of the Parts Unlimited catalog in hand, the bike was reborn as a cool street machine that has inviting looks without the price tag of a new bike. Plus with a weight of about 250 pounds, it would feel comfortable for a new rider to sit on.
The price of a new motorcycle can often be a big hurdle for a young person, with financing not as easy to obtain as in years past. So it would seem that a used bike is the obvious answer, and in many cases it is. But have you looked lately at the used bike inventory at your store?
We ran this story to show what can be done with a beat up old motorcycle, and be something that can be sold in you store for good money. In an upcoming issue we have another project bike to show you. This time it will be a “Refurbished” motocross bike. Same problem for first time buyers as on the street: Price too high for a new bike, and machine too worn out for a used bike.
Unfortunately, at too many motorcycle dealerships, the selection of used bikes can start to resemble a junkyard. Too many show obvious signs of damage and disrepair, a major negative for someone who knows they don’t have the knowledge, skills or desire to fix a broken bike out on the road. To my point: The options don’t just have to be New or Used. In between could be motorcycles that are (pick your favorite): Refurbished, Restored or Reconditioned. In this issue we have a story about a 1970 Honda CL350 that was transformed back into a “daily rider” by AFT’s
Our thanks to Jim Giuffra and the AFT girls: Shelby, Kristin, Cyndi, Tasha, Katy and Nalani for a job well done. That’s a fun looking ride for someone. ■

Parts Unlimited Welcomes Four New Reps
P
arts Unlimited has announced the addition of four new reps to the company’s agile and skilled sales force. The lineup includes Broc Burman, Hector Trevino, Ryan Burt and Tim Nelson.
Burman is the new sales rep for the Mid-Atlantic region, covering western North Carolina, and brings his experience as a former parts and service manager for two of North Carolina’s largest dealerships. That knowledge, combined with more than 20 years of off-road and motocross riding, will certainly help his dealers find the best solutions for their customers’ riding needs. When he isn’t working, Burman enjoys racing motocross and such outdoor sports as hiking. Trevino is the new sales rep for the South Central region covering Austin/San Antonio. Trevino recently worked as a sales rep and bike night organizers at Woods Cycle Country. He is an avid track day and back road rider, and is currently working toward his CMRA race license on his Kawasaki Ninja 636. He also enjoys a variety of outdoor sports like fishing, and traveling with his wife.
New to the North Central region covering North Michigan, Burt comes to Parts Unlimited after years as a parts, shipping and customer service employee at Holeshot Harley-Davidson. He has raced both motocross and Hare Scrambles around the country on his Honda CRF250R, and enjoys working on his friends’ motorcycles and ATVs. When he isn’t wrenching or riding, Burt plays music, listens to his vinyl collection and snowboards. Nelson joins the team as the sales rep for the Central Region covering Cincinnati. He has an extensive racing history, having raced for an aftermarket company in AMA District 1 for 18 years. He eventually became a sales rep for the company, then moved on to become a parts and accessories manager. When he’s not working or racing, Nelson spends time with his family, especially at his daughter’s softball games and cheerleading competitions. ■

AMS Wins Chaparral ATV Tire Shootout THE SLINGSHOT XT BESTED ALL CHALLENGERS

arts Unlimited dealer Chaparral Motorsports has crowned the AMS Slingshot XT the winner of its inaugural 25-inch ATV Tire Shootout, a competition that included weeks of slinging dirt, slogging through mud and hauling thousands of pounds.
GAUTIER PAULIN: FIM MX1-GP Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing
AMS Tire’s Jimmy White (left) was on hand to pick up the award for the Slingshot XT’s big win, an honor proudly handed over by Dave Damron, owner of Chaparral Motorsports.
The tire went up against 20 of the most popular 25-inch ATV tires on the market and was deemed by the dealership’s testing crew to be the best overall performer in a series of challenges.
“Every tire is different, but to be in the top five for nearly every test is pretty unreal,” says Jimmy White, AMS brand manager, who picked up the award on behalf of Parts Unlimited. “When you design a tire you design it for a couple types of terrain. This award goes to show the overall performance of the Slingshot XT.” The Shootout took place over several weeks at locations near the San Bernardino, CA dealership, with a 2017 Yamaha Kodiak 700 as the test vehicle. The challenges included a sled pull, hill climb, downhill braking, top speed braking, and a mud traction test.

t’s a rider’s dream, a set of tires that maintain their high-level performance, especially that wet-weather capability, for mile after mile. That dream just might have come true with the Road 5, Michelin’s latest, new, sport-touring tire. No question, there’s nothing like the feeling of a new set of premium tires. Bedded-in and brought up to operating temperature, fresh tires deliver a feeling of confidence in the dry and supreme wet-weather performance. As the miles roll up, though, some of that wet-weather feel goes away as the tires wear down, as the tread patterns and sipes lose some of their maximum designed-in depth. It’s inevitable. Or it was, before the Road 5. Michelin’s all-new Road 5, the newest top-tier offering aimed at sport-touring, and primarily riders on those naked and roadster-style sport-touring bikes, puts an end to that deteriorating wet-grip performance. Brand-new and available PARTS MAGAZINE

MARCH 2018
now in sizes covering a wide range of sport-touring machines, the Road 5 was designed to continue providing its maximum feeling of confidence in wet, and dry, conditions for a good long while. Testing at Michelin’s massive Ladoux, France facility, an R&D lab supported by no fewer than 21 test tracks, has shown the wet-braking performance of a worn set of Road 5s – tires with 3,500 miles on them – to more than match the performance of a brand-new set of Michelin Pilot Road 4s, tires with some pretty impressive and widely acclaimed wet-weather capability of their own. That’s all-weather performance designed to last. Long-lasting, all-weather performance like this comes thanks to Michelin’s revolutionary, and patented, XST Evo water drop sipe technology. There’s also Michelin’s patented ACT+ casing technology and its Dual Compounding, 2CT and 2CT+.

Michelin's Road 5 is designed to provide confident handling and feel, in wet or dry conditions, for mile after mile.
All these features add up to improved dry grip, strong straight line and cornering stability and remarkable wet grip all coming with no sacrifice in tire longevity. But it’s that innovative XST Evo siping, most noteworthy, that differentiates the Road 5 from any sport-touring tire before it.
XST Evo
In 2011 Michelin revolutionized motorcycle tire design with the introduction of the original, and patented, XST siping technology. First seen on the Pilot Road 3, and later enhanced in 2014 on the Pilot Road 4 tires with XST+ technology, the result of these major innovations helped sport-touring riders gain more confidence in their riding on wet roads.
The XST siping was designed to more efficiently evacuate water from under the contact patch, thus increasing that feeling of confidence on wet roads. However, as any tire’s tread becomes worn the ability to disperse water is naturally reduced, even with that XST and XST+ siping. But now comes the all-new Michelin Road 5 tire, which features this latest XST Evo siping, a design that extends the wet grip performance throughout the tire’s tread life. A game changer and major leap forward, Michelin based XST Evo on its already well-proven Evergrip™ tire tread design for automobiles. As a Road 5 tire wears, the XST Evo siping grooves actually become wider to allow increased water displacement and no loss in design efficiency.

By including dual compounding – those 2CT front and 2CT+ rear compounds – the Road 5 comes fully armed for sporttouring performance. Multi-compounding like this strikes an optimum balance of grip, cornering power, stability, handling feel and tire life; all the things riders look for in a premium sport-touring tire. The 2CT and 2CT+ compounds employ a durable 100 percent Silica center-tread compound coupled with 100 percent Carbon Black compounds on the shoulders. Together it delivers a light, confidence-inspiring feel, strong straight-line and leanangle stability and a significantly enhanced dry grip on the shoulders – all coupled with great wear resistance over a much wider part of the center tread as compared to its predecessor.
With XST Evo siping, riders get that added confidence on wet roads over a much longer period of the tire’s tread life. It’s an evolution in siping technology that ensures exceptional wet grip even as the tire becomes worn, and it’s available only with the Michelin Road 5.
Sport-touring riders, especially the ones favoring the stripped-down bikes, have some pretty specific demands for their tires. Michelin’s new Road 5 is something they’ll want to know about. There’s a lot to take in here because the Road 5 has a lot to offer, all starting with that XST Evo siping, a tire-tread feature that maintains exceptional wet-weather capabilities far longer than previously available.

the new tire and on Michelin’s online dealer training courses. For further details visit www.michelinmotorcycle.com.
ACT+ & Dual Compounding
MICHELIN TIRES
XST Evo tread siping isn’t all that the new Road 5 brings to the game. Built to deliver all-weather performance, these tires have plenty of dry-pavement performance and a long-life capability.
16
Michelin’s ACT+ technology is at work here, and so is the very latest Michelin Dual Compound technology, 2CT on the front and 2CT+ on the rear – a first for a Michelin sport-touring rear tire. The result of all this is an optimum balance between wetweather grip, dry-road performance and tire longevity with overall improvements in grip, stability and handling feel. The company’s ACT+ technology serves up its performance by regulating the rigidity of the tire to a rider’s demands. It’s a carcass construction that employs casing plies with high, overlapping cross-ply angles. This design delivers maximum rigidity in the sidewall and shoulder areas for exceptional cornering power while maintaining a high level of flexibility in the crown for straight-line stability. It’s a tire technology Michelin likens to be just as big a step forward in tire design as was radial construction, something else Michelin developed back in 1984. Michelin ACT+ helps to achieve a high level of tire performance with a progressive, predictable feel.

It’s pure attitude, all bold graphics and bold colors. And on the Pulse jerseys there’s even more dimension coming from a unique highdensity logo embellishment. That new Hype graphic works great on the tremendously popular Sector helmets, too. The perfect complement to a Pulse or Pulse Air kit, the Sector Hype is also an excellent stand-alone graphic. It’ll work with lots of other kits in the Thor line. (And, here’s an ordering hint – if the Sector Hype helmets follow the trend of the initial Sector helmet launch keep plenty of the Black/Charcoal versions on hand. You’ll need them.)

THE KITN Now here’s a new look bound to have some people scratching their heads. Younger riders, though, will break into big, wide grins. Have you seen those cute YouTube kitten videos? Well, Thor’s Kitn style, available on the Pulse gear, takes that one step further. Conservative, old school riders might wonder what the heck Thor was thinking but hip moto kids will be all over it.
HALLMAN RACING GEAR What better time than a 50th anniversary to honor a company’s heritage and its founder? Thor’s Hallman Racing lineup celebrates the company’s authentic roots. Torsten “Mr. Motocross” Hallman, a four-time World Champion, founded Thor in 1968 and over the years riders wearing Thor gear have won countless races and championships. The 2018 Hallman Racing line links all that experience and history with a passion for the future. It’s race gear with a true, authentic vibe.
All this is available now, and there’s more. The Guardian line of roost deflectors, for instance, is available with a new motocross focus for 2018. It’s the Guardian MX, a lighter, nimbler cousin to those popular Guardian protectors. It’s available in new colors and graphics, a look that’s sure to resonate with the moto crowd. ■

Star brite is a prime manufacturer, developing formulas, blending and bottling products in containers produced by the inhouse blow-molding operation and packing finished goods to be shipped to distribution centers around the globe. This large-scale operation allows Star brite to obtain the latest high technology ingredients at bulk price levels, thus delivering high quality products at very reasonable prices.
The Star brite headquarters in Montgomery, AL handles everything from developing and blending the company’s formulas to manufacturing the bottles that hold those cleaners and chemicals.
M
ost in the powersports industry know Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment, but few know Star brite, the company behind Star Tron and many other products.
Founded in 1973, Star brite is well known for its products that are engineered to withstand the harsh saltwater marine environment — the toughest conditions on the planet in terms of corrosion and UV damage, as well as severe wear and tear. Star brite’s powersports products are just as tough, making them a great choice to clean and protect every inch of motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs, as well as to protect engines and cooling systems.
The flagship product is Star Tron Enzyme Fuel Treatment, engineered to improve the performance of all engines by helping to optimizing fuel combustibility, while also treating debris or deposits in fuel and engines. Star Tron also stabilizes fuel, making it the ideal way to ensure easy, fast starts of bikes, quads, sleds, side-bysides or PWC that remain unused for many months while in seasonal storage. Off-road toys — and the trucks that haul them — all run better on Star Tron-treated fuel. Star Cool Synthetic Coolant uses cutting-edge technology to help ensure that all water-cooled engines deliver full power under all operating conditions while also sealing pinhole leaks or fissures to help avoid breakdowns while way out on the trail. Star brite’s powersports lineup also includes Bike Guard, Corrosion Blocker and the rest of the Ultimate line that clean, protect and enhance fiberglass, painted surfaces, metal, plastics and vinyl. Salt Off is a unique product that removes destructive road salt and brine from wheels, frames and all other metal parts. Star brite rounds out its powersports line with fogging oil, liquid electrical tape, microfiber wash mitts, oil absorbing pads, chrome and stainless polish and a wide range of lubricants. ■

pring cleaning isn’t just for your home. When winter finally comes to an end and the first days of spring riding are on the horizon, it’s a perfect chance for your customers to clean out their gear bags and make way for new, fresh gear. Moose Racing is gearing up for spring with the introduction of the XCR goggles as well as new colorways for its durable M1 line of off-road pants and jerseys. The XCR goggle is an new product from Moose Racing. The bold styling includes a large eye port for maximum visibility coupled with an optically pure polycarbonate lens that is coated to provide a scratch-resistant, anti-fog surface. The frame of the XCR goggle is an injected polyurethane material that provides both flexibility and durability. Ventilation on the frame helps release hot air and cuts down on perspiration. One of those vents is on top of the integrated nose guard, which offers maximum roost coverage. The frame is lined with soft multi-density foam with a fleece backing for comfort. The foam also assists with moisture management and provides a barrier to keep out dirt.

The XCR goggle stays in place with an elastic strap backed by a tacky silicone print for extra security. The strap feeds through an outrigger system on the frame that is designed to create a consistent seal and a balanced fit. Riders get to make a few choices when deciding which XCR goggles to go with. The two different designs include Hatch and Camo. Hatch has a prominent Moose Racing logo on the elastic strap, while the Camo option has a stylized “M” built into the graphics. The Hatch option comes in black/hi viz, black/orange, blue/red and green/ yellow. Meanwhile, the Camo colors include green/black, yellow/orange, blue/orange and black. Dealers can now offer customers more color choices when it comes to Moose Racing’s M1 off-road apparel, too. The jerseys and pants in the line have new spring colorways of orange/blue/black and pink/black/blue. Those colors are in addition to the existing options of red/white/blue, hi-viz/magenta, blue/black, black/hi-viz, red/black, green/ black and orange/black. Needless to say, there are plenty of mix-and-match options between the M1 race wear and the XCR goggles.

MOOSE RACING
Moose Racing’s M1 riding gear is back for 2018 in a host of new colorways, including hi-viz/magenta and orange/black.
The M1 race wear collection features semi-ventilated jerseys and pants that are designed to withstand the rigors of both motocross and trail riding. Moose Racing utilizes polyester and nylon materials that have a heavier gauge, making the gear more durable and better able to handle any kind of riding condition. On top of that, the M1 gear has triple-stitched seams, high-denier material in high-abrasion areas, full grain leather panels and high-quality fasteners, ensuring that every aspect of the apparel is as hearty as the material. Despite the detail given to its indestructibility, Moose Racing ensures that the price point is kept at a competitive level. The semi-ventilated M1 jersey has a polyester chassis with a V-neck collar. Its quick-drying properties combined with the ventilation ensure that moisture will be pulled away from the skin to keep riders more dry and comfortable, even when they are riding hard. The non-restrictive stretch mini cuffs keep the sleeves in the right spot, and the high-quality sublimated graphics will maintain their color after being washed. Sizing starts at small and goes up to 2XL. Moose Racing’s M1 pants feature a high-denier polyester chassis that has double- and triple-stitched seams. The knees have full grain leather inner panels for protec-
tion, while the cut in that area is oversized to allow an optimal range of motion while on the bike. The seat panel is reinforced, too, adding even more abrasion resistance. Like the M1 jersey, the sublimated graphics on the M1 pants mean that colors stay bold. A three-point waist adjustment system caps off the pants, ensuring a finetuned fit. Sizing goes from a 28 to 38. The M1 gear has the typical features of race wear, such as the pre-bent ergonomic design of the pants, but a nod to current style trends is also apparent. The gear has the more form-fitting, athletic fit that is typically seen on top competitive riders. The integrated stretch panels are ideal for the slimmer fit, allowing a full range of movement without bulky styling. Moose Racing has a full range of racewear and goggles with varying designs, fits and price points for both adults and children, giving riders who are doing a little spring cleaning plenty of options. You can find all of it in the 2018 Helmet and Apparel catalog. ■

Stowage, Spare Tire Storage Options Most ATVs don’t provide many storage options. For those, there is the ATV Drop Rack.
The Pioneer 500 Rear Rack is a sturdy addition to Honda’s popular side-by-side, and is great for providing extra storage.
F
rom hauling things to having a spare on hand when you need it, Moose Utility Division is all about making tasks easier. The latest trio of products from the company continues that tradition, with two rear storage solutions and a spare tire hitch mount. Moose Utility Division is making it easy to haul a lot of cargo on the Honda Pioneer 500 with the Pioneer 500 Rear Rack. The basket measures in at 44½ inches X 27½ inches, offering plenty of space for whatever extras are coming along for the ride. The rear rack is designed to be rugged and durable, able to tackle the terrain as well as the cargo. The unit is constructed of 14-gauge steel with 1-inch tubing on top, making it a heavy-duty rack that can stand up to a lot of hard use. The entire rear rack is powder coated with texture powder paint for an additional protective barrier. The Pioneer 500 Rear Rack arrives with all of the necessary steel mounting hardware for easy installation. In the same vein, Moose Utility Division has a new ATV Drop Rack that offers a significant amount of cargo storage. The drop rack has a universal fit, making it a great option for dealers who carry a wide range of ATV makes and models. The ¾-inch, 18-gauge steel tubing keeps the cargo safe no matter what the trail (or lack of one) has in store.

The Moose Utility Division spare tire hitch mount is a great solution for carrying a spare in an easy to access, yet out-of-theway position.
The whole drop rack is finished off with a rubberized black powder coat. Like the Pioneer 500 Rear Rack, the ATV Drop Rack arrives with all of the mounting hardware. In addition to being rugged and spacious, both of the racks are also made in the USA. For UTV riders who want to make sure they are prepared for a flat tire, no matter how far out on the trail they are, Moose Utility Division has a spare tire hitch mount. The curved bottom insert has a fully adjustable height, and the vertical arm that the spare tire mounts to can be adjusted to a number of different heights to allow accessibility into the back of the UTV. Alternatively, the pin can be easily removed so the spare tire can be pulled off, allowing even better access to the rear of the vehicle. The spare tire hitch mount for UTVs fits all 2-inch receivers. And, just like the racks as well as many of the company’s products, it is made in the USA. ■

assani now has True Duals for the Indian Chieftain and Roadmaster. With all the performance these systems offer – good looks and that unique stereo exhaust sound – True Dual exhausts are a popular pick for lots of riders. A longtime favorite in the V-twin world – Darryl Bassani began making Harley-Davidson exhausts back in 1969 – Bassani pipes and mufflers are built to perform. That enhanced power comes with good looks, too, and an easy fit. There’s a unique, aggressive sound to anything Bassani, whether it’s the company’s Harley-Davidson pipes or the performance exhausts they have for Corvettes, Mustangs, pickup trucks, UTVs and even with that wildly popular exhaust developed especially for the Polaris Slingshot. Bassani has packed decades of experience into these new True Duals for the Indians, the latest additions to the lineup. Part number 1811-3435 gets the True Dual exhaust in the chrome finish, while part number 1811-3434 is for the system in black. The new Chieftain and Roadmaster True Duals kick off with 1¾-inch headers, pipes custom-formed to pull maximum performance out of that Thunder Stroke engine. These
are no- compromise performers that fit right for an easy, no-hassle installation and they’re styled for a smooth, flowing look that’s right in tune with those big Indians. Heat shields are included and Bassani has fit the pipes with 18mm O2 bungs with 12mm adapters supplied; custom tuning with either OE sensors or wide-band replacements from the aftermarket is a breeze. All this is backed up with big, 4-inch diameter straight can mufflers with that deep, aggressive and unmistakable Bassani tone. The baffles are removable should a rider choose and the mufflers are tipped with custom-machined billet end caps with a slant cut style. True Duals are a Bagger bike favorite, and you can count on these Chieftain and Roadmaster sets performing, and selling, true to form. Bassani has done the homework and is solidly plugged into the Internet and all the social media and online communities. The company listens to what riders are saying, to what they’re asking for. And for Indian riders on the big, Bagger models it’s True Duals. ■

Stealth, Aluminum and Steel Works-Level Performance Sprockets
Those Supersprox Stealth sprockets, originally designed as a factory part for the KTM Dakar Rally bikes, are dual-material (aluminum and steel) sprockets available for both street and off-road applications.
Stealth sprocket for street bikes
For the street applications there’s a full lineup for popular street and sportbikes, every one a great choice for long life with reduced weight and added style. With the Stealth, off-road riders and racers get extended durability and chain life coupled with a low combined weight.
Stealth sprocket for off-road bikes
There’s also a unique, grooved-tooth design that prevents dirt build-up under the chain rollers and extends chain life. Every sprocket is surface ground after manufacture to ensure that all scratches or marks are removed before the durable anodizing is applied, and there’s a whole range of colors available here to mix-and-match with the bike.

RC Japan, Yamaha Factory Racing and the factory KTM, Husqvarna and BMW race teams all have something in common. So do the KTM, Husqvarna, Beta and Triumph factories.
For the former, all those factory race teams, Supersprox is and has been a longtime technical advisor and supplier. And, for the latter, Supersprox is one of their OEM suppliers for drive sprockets. Furthermore, Supersprox produces sprockets in three variations — dual-material, aluminum and steel. Needless to say, Supersprox is a company with an entire line of products that a whole lot of people in the know depend on.

For motocross applications the Supersprox Aluminum sprockets combine light weight and high strength, extra-thick (5.8mm) 7075-T651 aluminum to minimize the risk of a broken sprocket even in the most rutted conditions.
Then there are the Supersprox Racing Steels, sprockets track-developed to be lightweight and still cope with the high-performance of the strongest race machines. CAD designed and laser cut, the Racing Steels include an exclusive Tri-Zinc technology. This process includes a first layer of silver/nickel for strong anti-corrosion resistance, a second black layer with tiny particles that fill micro-pores in the steel surface so abrasive rust won’t prematurely wear out the chain, and a slippery topcoat to reduce dirt build up and keep the sprocket looking good. The Supersprox Gearbox Sprockets are case-hardened alloy steel that is carbon-impregnated and oil-quenched for a super-hard surface, a consistent wear pattern, low friction and extended life. Fully lightened with radial holes for most of the off-road and street applications, they feature reduced rotational mass for faster spin-ups. The off-road applications have those grooved teeth preventing dirt build-up under the chain. ■

Heads Up!
The 2018 Helmet Line is Here
T
he year 2018 heralds LeMans Corporation’s fifth year as the exclusive US distributor for Biltwell helmets, hard parts and safety gear, and Parts Unlimited is the place to get it all.
Biltwell’s 2018 helmet line is robust, with four open- and full-face models available in a color range comprising 20 hand-painted gloss, flat, metallic and limited edition graphic flavors. Available in sizes XS through XXL, every model in Biltwell’s lineup excels in its sub-category in terms of fit, function and style.
Bonanza
Bike riders looking for greater safety in a no-frills full-face helmet swear by Biltwell’s Gringo and Gringo S. Both models feature an injection-molded ABS outer shell for durability and expanded polystyrene internal safety liner for impact attenuation. A removable hand-stitched comfort liner with brushed fleece Lycra and open-cell foam padding assures moisture wicking and breathability. Gringo S differs from its stable mate by the inclusion of a molded polycarbonate shield. This shield is removable for cleaning, and Parts stocks a wide range of tinted, gradient and mirror accessory shields for daytime riding. They come in 10 colors and six sizes for each model. Both models comply with US DOT safety standards for street motorcycle operation.
Lane Splitter Introduced in 2017, Biltwell’s Lane Splitter boasts the same proven manufacturing technologies, comfort and safety benefits as the company’s other helmets, but in a more aggressive silhouette for two-wheeled pursuits. Bonanza is Biltwell’s open-face workhorse in the DOTcompliant helmet race, and it’s a winner. Like every model in the Biltwell range, Bonanza features an injection-molded ABS plastic outer shell. The benefits of this material are consistent density and wall thickness for lightness and durability, and a super-smooth surface for superior paint finishing. Biltwell prides itself on setting new color trends, and this year’s line does not disappoint. New Bonanza colors for 2018 include Safe-T yellow and Sierra Green metallic in addition to the classics.
Gringo and Gringo S
In a nod to the growing global prominence of the brand, Biltwell’s Lane Splitter is both DOT and European ECE certified. Discrete front, side and rear vents with stainless-steel screen detailing channel cool airflow through the helmet’s EPS safety liner to reduce moisture and enhance all-day riding comfort. The helmet’s molded polycarbonate shield is CE certified, and can be removed for cleaning or replacement. ■

Modern bikeriders give Biltwell helmets high praise, and for good reason. Every model delivers style without gingerbread, comfort without complexity and technology without feature creep. The Biltwell Bonanza changed the game first when it earned Hot Bike magazine’s Editor’s Choice award in 2014. We followed that accolade a year later by resurrecting another classic with our Gringo and Gringo S. In 2017 we raised the stakes with our Lane Splitter—the first Biltwell helmet engineered to meet Europe’s strict ECE R22.05 safety standard. The 2018 Biltwell helmet line is our biggest and best yet. ince 1948 riders have known where to look for the good stuff. When it came to cables and clutches Charlie Barnett was the man to see. Seven decades later nothing has changed about that Barnett name. A family-run business from the beginning, Barnett Tool & Engineering is now into its third generation and is still a go-to source. Cables are still a company mainstay (applications now cover nearly every type of vehicle, including the newest 2018 machines) but at today’s Barnett there is much, much more. Along with all those cables in all their styles there are also clutch kits and clutch-upgrade packages. That lineup includes both off-road machines and streetbikes. In fact, two of the newest additions to the lineup are Dirt Digger Clutch Kits and Extra-Plate Clutch Kits for the Honda CRF450R/RX and Parts Unlimited has them both. Both kits install the same as stock for a no-hassle drop in, and that’s where any comparison with OE begins and ends. These new Honda kits feature an exclusive segmented Kevlar material on the friction plates that’s paired with tempered steel drive plates and a full set of shot-peened and heat-treated clutch springs – springs that are 10 percent to 15 percent stronger than OE.

Both kits are designed to flow more oil through the clutch for cooler running and a longer life, and everything is pre-measured for an absolutely correct stack height prior to packaging. It all adds up to smooth, consistent performance, increased clutch life and, of course, that easy, reliable fit. The upgrades don’t end there. Barnett also has highperformance clutch baskets for those off-road machines, upgrades available for most all of the popular off-road motorcycles and sport ATVs. Precision machined from the top-quality aluminum, the baskets feature replaceable stainless-steel inserts to prevent grooving of the basket where the clutch-plate tabs make contact. Barnett has redesigned all the oilpassage windows to further increase oil flow through those segmented clutch plates for even cooler operating temperatures and an even longer clutch life. TIRES
The Battlax Sport-Touring T31 Confident Riding in All Conditions
Bridgestone’s new Battlax Sport-Touring T31 is the company’s flagship offering for the Sport-Touring segment. The tires were designed to provide a comfortable and confident feeling ride in all conditions.
S
port-touring is a motorcycling segment with legs. Manufacturers and the aftermarket have answered the call and, naturally, upgrade tires are a big part of this scene. Bridgestone’s newest, the Battlax Sport-Touring T31, has just become that company’s flagship offering for the field and it’s something both you and your sport-touring riders will want to know about. Designed from scratch and drawing on decades of Bridgestone experience, as well as Bridgestone’s exclusive UltimatEYE Data Acquisition technology, the Sport-Touring T31 comes armed to deliver everything sport-touring riders ask for. These are tires promising a comfortable and confident feeling in all conditions. Wet or dry, in temperatures ranging from desert hot to mountaintop cold, down the straight highways or through twisting, winding back roads, the Sport-Touring T31s were built to take it on and leave a rider smiling. A tall order, no question, but one the Bridgestone engineers were up to. All-conditions, all-encompassing performance like this, and delivering it with no sacrifice in tire life, was made possible by the T31s innovative pattern designs, with new multi-compounds custom-developed at the molecular level to increase and optimize the Silica dispersion. The carcass design and construction also help plant a large contact patch on the pavement. That UltimatEYE Data Acquisition technology, by the way, played a big role in all of this. It’s a tire-development

technique Bridgestone uses in its Formula 1 and MotoGP tires and it was applied here. Looking at the new Sport-Touring T31s you can start with those tread patterns, front and rear. With both patterns focused on efficient water displacement, the Sea/Land ratios (treads to grooves ratio) were increased in the shoulder areas and slightly decreased in the center-tread. Up front it was done striking a performance balance between tread deformation and rigidity, out back with an emphasis on maintaining high-speed stability. Immediate benefits here are improved water displacement for better wet grip, but with the T31’s designed-in block rigidity there’s a more controlled feel and reduced stopping distances in all conditions, wet or dry. The T31’s construction and compounding add to the flexibility of the rubber for an increased road feel. Coupled with the increased-size contact patches, the tires generate significantly higher camber thrust (the force that makes a motorcycle actually turn). With the Sport-Touring T31 there’s a confident, performance feel sent straight back to the rider, and it’s there in all conditions, all temperatures and over all road surfaces. There are 18 different sizes of Battlax Sport-Touring T31s available, eight fronts and 10 rears. ■

igh performance horsepower, torque and speed require even higher performance stopping power. When you’re talking to your customers about upgrading their brakes, don’t forget that brake lines are vitally important. EBC Brakes now offers a full range of direct replacement brake lines for most motorcycles. These lines are manufactured from high quality materials with braided stainless steel PTFE hose and grade 303 stainless steel precision machined fittings. There are no mild steel or aluminum components in these brake lines; EBC uses stainless steel for every fitting as it offers maximum quality in terms of strength and corrosion resistance. EBC brake line kits are supplied 100 percent complete, including all new stainless steel bolts where applicable. Plus, they look great and enhance the look and style of the motorcycle. These quality lines are built to last, and every line is offered with a lifetime warranty. And, as a sign of quality, EBC brake lines are manufactured to FMVSS-106 (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards – article 106) standards and have the following approvals: DOT, TÜV, ISO9001, DEKRA, ARAI, CCC, and ADR. EBC brake lines are factory built by professionals who manufacture every single brake line kit to exacting standards, in the company’s state-of-the-art production facility. Every brake line is pressure tested after full assembly to 4000 PSI. This manufacturing method ensures that each and every EBC brake line has been tested to be high quality and fit for purpose, and all EBC brake line fittings are designed and engineered in the UK. EBC has a wide range of fittings to choose from, ensuring an ideal fit for nearly every vehicle application. EBC brake lines follow the original routing path as the OE parts, which ensure safe clearance and full travel of steering, suspension and other moving parts on the machine.
EBC Brakes lineup of replacement brake lines are manufactured with quality materials and are designed to provide high performance braking for the lifetime of the machine.
Plus, for your off-road customers, EBC motocross and off-road brake lines are supplied with a hardened plastic sheath around the lower portion of the hose. The New Airflite Helmet
I
con’s helmet line has expanded again, this time with the introduction of the Airflite. The aggressive lines of the new fullface street helmet are paired with the company’s Quicksilver brushed silver finish for an industrial look. The Airflite meets or exceeds ECE 2205 helmet standards, and it is loaded with a lot of perks to keep the helmet comfortable and easy to maintain. The shell is constructed of an injectionmolded polycarbonate to offer strength and durability for guarding against outside elements. That shell is covered with Icon’s distinctive Quicksilver finish. First, the entire helmet is painted with multiple coats of silver paint, and then each helmet is burnished, antiqued and polished by hand. The result is a truly unique helmet, since no two are alike. The process gives the Quicksilver finish a distinctive depth and sheen, as well. Quicksilver is a new finish to the Icon family of helmets, and it can also be found on the Variant and Airframe Pro. To keep things from getting foggy inside the helmet, a removable molded breath deflector has been paired with fog-free shields. The Quick-Change fog-free Fliteshield is easy to swap and easy to keep clear, even on cold days. Each replacement Fliteshield comes with new side plates. In addition to clear, the shield is also available in Icon’s range of tinted shields. Meanwhile, behind the Fliteshield, the fog-free Dropshield can slide down to provide shading from the sunshine. An exterior switch makes it simple to drop or raise the shield, even when wearing gloves. The tinted Dropshield is an ideal solution for changing light conditions, allowing a rider to change the view without changing the shield. The Dropshield is also available in clear for riders who want to pair it with a tinted Fliteshield.
The Airflite helmet meets or exceeds ECE 22-05 helmet standards, and includes such features as the interior, flipdown Dropshield and the super-vent cooling system.
oversized intake ports, which are controlled by individual vent triggers. Oversized exhaust ports ensure that the hot air gets filtered out of the helmet. Recessed super-vents reduce wind noise, so a rider gets all the benefits of a ventilation system without having to listen to it. Inside the Airflite, a removable HydraDry moisturewicking liner provides a snug fit while keeping things dry. Air from the vents is channeled between the comfort liner and the EPS foam liner, which keeps air moving so the interior of the Airflite does not get stuffy. The HydraDry liner helps reduce heat build-up, too, and it wicks moisture away from the rider’s face. The Airflite is available in sizes XS to 3XL.

Bluetooth Tech for Cord-Free Listening This latest version of the JMAHP software profile from J&M provides either mono music or aptX digital stereo to the headset, (aptX stereo decoding active with BT03-plus or later model J&M Bluetooth headset) with simultaneous and continuous microphone signals back to the dongle audio source. Tell your customers that this will allow stereo music, private driver/passenger intercom and CB radio transmissions.
With J&M Corporation’s new J&M Blu<>Hub Bluetooth dongle, your customers with 2001-2017 Gold Wings and 2006-2018 Harley-Davidson Baggers can link their favorite J&M or other brand Bluetooth helmet headset to the motorcycle mounted audio system instead of having to use a corded headset.
J
&M Corporation has manufactured helmet headsets for more than 40 years, primarily for those riding large touring motorcycles like the Honda Gold Wing and Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic.
Most of these systems have been corded helmet headsets because that was the best technology available when they were starting out. However, J&M is all about offering high-end sound to your customers and the market for Bluetooth helmet headsets is really starting to boom. That’s why J&M is introducing the new J&M Blu<>Hub Bluetooth dongles for 2001-2017 Gold Wings, 2006-2018 Harley Baggers, along with additional system applications like the JMCB-2003. These brand new Blu<>Hub dual-module Bluetooth Dongle kits feature J&M’s exclusive JMAHP software profile and allows the rider and/or passenger to link their favorite J&M or other brand Bluetooth helmet headset to the motorcycle mounted audio system instead of having to use a corded headset.

Now you can offer your customers the chance to ‘cut the cord’ between their helmet headset and the mounted audio system without sacrificing that great J&M sound! The factory handlebar and dashknob volume controls will raise and lower the music, intercom and CB volume levels inside each Bluetooth headset, once linked and adjusted. Plus, either the driver or passenger can link their own cell phone to their individual J&M Bluetooth headsets simultaneously with this Blu<>Hub dongle for automatic switching back and forth between stereo music/intercom/CB and individual cell phone conversations.
Your customers don’t have to toss their old corded system because with the J&M Blu<>Hub dongle system installed, corded helmet headsets can still be used at any time thru the standard headset connection plugs, simultaneous with either of the Bluetooth headset links. The Blu<>Hub dongle will turn on and off automatically with the motorcycle ignition and there are no batteries to charge or replace. These new Blu<>Hub dongle kits are 100 percent plug-and-play, and can be connected to a computer via the standard USB port, for software updates direct from the J&M website should they be needed. Assembled in the USA at the J&M factory in Tucson AZ, these headsets come with comprehensive linking and operation manual included. ■

Whether it’s racing or recreational riding, Trinity Racing exhausts for UTVs are designed to save weight over stock while giving a significant boost to both horsepower and torque. Trinity Racing exhausts include dual and single configurations in both full systems and slip-ons. They are constructed of 304 brushed stainless steel mid-pipes, and the dual aluminum mufflers are available in a brushed finish or with a black coating. The full systems benefit from a newly designed stage 5 system. The components are fully TIG welded, connecting with 6061 billet machined exhaust tips and muffler mounting brackets. Polaris and Can-Am UTVs can get an additional performance edge with Trinity Racing’s e-compound drive belt. The carbon fiber belt has superior cord tensile strength and a DUMAX top cog compound to retain cord rigidity and ensure better adhesion of the top cog to the cord construction. DUMAX is a high-temperature, heat-resistant polymer with directionally oriented fibers. It can handle the stress of maximum power transfers through the clutch, and it is engineered to keep maximum under-cord stiffness across the belt while still allowing the belt to flex for efficiency and cooler running temperatures. The ultra-strong Aramid fiber cord can handle more than 10,000 pounds of tension without stretching or breaking. It is 30 percent stronger than OEM drive belts. A Trinity Racing clutch kit improves torque and throttle response for the Polaris Turbo, RZR 1000 and Can-Am X3. The clutch kits are specifically designed to eliminate harsh engagement and belt slippage, provide smoother shifting and reduce clutch temperature. All of the clutch kits include Trinity’s e-compound drive belt and a oneyear warranty on all components, including the drive belt. Trinity Racing has been engineering and producing products for the off-road industry since 1978. Today, the company specializes in quality exhaust systems and related components for the ATV and UTV industry. ■

he saying is “Don’t reinvent the wheel,” but that’s exactly what Excel Rim did back in 1952 when the Excel factory ceased production of bicycle rims and began developing motorcycle rims. Years of research and development, as well as a close collaboration with top racing teams, has allowed Excel Rims to develop exceptionally strong rims. Excel’s flagship rim is the Excel A60 rim. A60 was developed specifically for professional Supercross and motocross racing applications. Excel A60 rims are structurally 15 percent stronger than current Excel Takasago rims and feature a V-Curve profile to help mud slide off the rim, better helping reduce rotating wheel mass. The A60 is only available in black and is characterized by a metallic silver pinstripe on both sides of the rim. Excel A60s are available in a range of sizes and can be laced to both stock and aftermarket hubs. A60 rims are used by championship teams and riders, including Zach Osborne of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing, and Cody Webb of FMF KTM Factory Racing Off-Road. Excel’s Takasago Series Rims are also suitable for Supercross and motocross racing and are constructed from 7 series aluminum alloy, meeting or exceeding OEM quality specifications. Unlike Excel A60, Excel Takasago rims are available in a wider range of colors and sizes. Rim colors include black, gold, silver, blue and yellow. onda’s 350 twins of the late-‘60s and early-‘70s, a little overshadowed in their day by the Super Hawks that came before them and the CB750s that changed the motorcycle world, were nonetheless some of the company’s best sellers for a number of years in there. “And they’re getting pretty popular again,” says Jim Giuffra of AFT Customs, in Jackson, California. “A lot of guys and girls remember these things as their first bike and now want to do something cool with one again.” And this one, a CL350 (the bikes came in dual-sport CL, street CB and scrambler SL configurations), is definitely something cool. Jim and the AFT Customs girls, Shelby, Kristin, Cyndi, Tasha, Katy and Nalani, that knockout team of models who also happen to be certified TIG-welders, fabricators and bike builders of the first order, definitely changed things up. Of course, those Parts Unlimited catalogs played a major role in all of this. Hardware from more than 20 different vendors found its way into the project, dubbed the Coriolis. There’s everything from the Excel rims (now featuring 110 hand-drilled lightening holes in each one) to the Moose Racing throttle tubes, Pingel kill switch, Golan petcocks and more. They’re all listed in the accompanying Build Sheet.

1970 Honda CL 350 Customized by AFT Customs / Jackson, CA Vendor
“No one has ever done something like this with one of these bikes before,” Giuffra says. “Or at least no one I know of.” For starters, the little Honda is now an automatic, and it has disc brakes on both wheels. It’s also been converted to mono-shock rear suspension. None of this was easy, not even for Jim and the AFT girls, masters at this sort of thing. That automatic clutch didn’t just slip in behind the stock clutch cover. It took a fair amount of head-scratching and custom machining, now shown off with the addition of a clear, see-through window. The disc brakes were no easy fit, either, especially into the narrow front fork kept because of its nostalgic exposed springs. And the mono-shock rear suspension was no walk in the park, work that extended up into modifications of the stock Honda gas tank. That tank, incidentally, is painted in the stock 1970 Honda orange with the accent changed from white to silver. Katy and Nalani handled a lot of this fabrication and the custom welding it entailed, and the ladies made the fairing, too. They also modified the stock CL headlight bucket to accept an LED headlight and that minimalist seat/rear fender is another AFT creation. Formed out of quarter-inch aluminum and featuring Duane Ballard upholstery, Kristin gets the credit for this bit of fabrication. There’s another LED tucked underneath as the taillight. Naturally, the engine got plenty of attention. Tasha made the modifications here, completing final assembly with a big-bore package, Mikuni carburetors and a lightweight Kibblewhite 5mm valve and spring kit. A full AFT exhaust system, TIG-welded by Cyndi, culminates in a cut-down LeoVinci muffler, a silencer shortened inside and out to half its original length. The covers on the primary-drive side of the engine were severely trimmed and reshaped, too, as was the chain guard. It all comes across as clean, minimalist and neat as a pin.

“Simple bikes like this,” he says, and this one weighs just 250 pounds, “are generally the hardest ones to build. It’s tough to hide things, to keep that clean look. There’s hardly any frame, there’s no bodywork. It takes quite a bit of thinking as to where you’re going to put things and still make everything function.” Now, as to that name, Coriolis. It seems that Giuffra and the AFT Girls – Shelby, Kristin, Cyndi, Tasha, Katy and Nalani – besides being custom bike builders are also avid long-range target shooters. Really long range, and in shooting terms the “Coriolis Effect” is how far the earth moves while the bullet is in flight, one of the many factors to take into account for this kind of shooting. Take note: Kristin recently hit an 18-inch x 24-inch target at 2,000 yards, a target more than a mile away. otorcycle riders think of SENA Technologies, Inc. as a dedicated motorcycle brand, but the company is a lot more diversified than that. SENA started in 1998 as a Bluetooth-based solutions company for industrial applications well outside the realm of motorcycles. It wasn’t until 2010 that SENA got into the motorcycle industry with the introduction of the SMH10 Bluetooth headset and intercom. SENA marketing manager Leah Langford explains that their CEO Tae Kim was riding his motorcycle and was using a Bluetooth communication that was on the market, and essentially thought, “I can do this better.”

For dealers, it means that there are options to fit every type of rider, from commuters to road-trippers. “For us, it’s about the big picture and it’s about community, and anyone who rides is part of that community. It doesn’t matter what clothes you like to wear or what kind of bike you like to ride. At the end of the day, everybody is on two wheels, but I think our extensive line is really a reflection of individuals,” says Langford. Bluetooth technology has come a long way since SENA first built the SMH10 in 2010. SENA products went on to incorporate Bluetooth 4.0, which allows for easy integration with smartphones and other devices like handlebar remotes. SENA’s latest communication device is the 30K. It represents another upgrade in Bluetooth, 4.1 this time, which allows the device to use a new feature called Mesh Intercom Technology. While typical Bluetooth allows a one-to-one connection, Mesh creates a network. Devices like the R10 allow up to 20 connections, but those pairings are daisychained together. With Mesh technology, the 30K is more like a web than a line, and it allows for more connections.

SENA
The S3 is a super low-profile, integrated helmet headset.
The original communicator in the SENA lineup, the SMH10, comes in multiple configurations and features phone capabilities and GPS direction streaming.
The technology has some other pretty cool implications for the 30K. Langford says, “On the 30K, we have a couple of different modes, but one is just one click of a button and it’s almost like a CB radio: you’re instantly talking with an unlimited amount of riders within a mile range. Or you can do a private group, where it’s 16 riders so no one else can listen in, within a mile range. They can piggyback off each other, and essentially have the option of a five-mile range from the front to back rider.” And if one of the riders goes out of range, the Mesh Intercom Technology keeps the rest of the group connected while continuing to search for that rider, automatically reconnecting them to the group when they are back in range. The 30K Audio Multitasking feature means a rider can have a conversation via the Mesh network, stream music from a smartphone, have phone calls and listen to GPS navigation, all without having to switch between channels or devices. The entire unit weighs in at just 2.15 ounces, and it comes with a microphone and dual speakers. The classic SMH10 is still in the lineup, featuring Bluetooth 3.0, a four-way intercom with a half-mile range, phone capabilities and GPS direction streaming. The SMH10R is a low-profile version that includes music sharing. The SMH5 is ideal for a rider and passenger, with two-way intercom
and music sharing. The 3S is an integrated helmet headset with great audio quality, but a narrow controller for a super low profile. Langford says that this diversity of products can be a benefit for dealers, who are better able to give customers exactly what they need. “You can put the 30K in front of them, but somebody might really like that 10R because it’s low-profile. Or they just want to ride as a passenger, so maybe [they’ll want] a 3S or an SMH5,” Langford says. “I think any customer who comes in and is given that kind of nuanced and really knowledgeable perspective about how to better their ride on an individual level is a win-win for everyone.” While all of the customization and technology are the big selling points of SENA products, Langford also notes that there are points to be made on the side of safety, too. “Not only do we have the speakers so you don’t have earbuds or earplugs in, but if you’re riding with someone, you can tell them to watch out for something, or you can hear your GPS directions and not have to constantly look down on your phone to figure out where you are. It allows you to focus more on the road.” ■

Off-Road Performance in the 21st Century
T
imes have changed. Building performance into an off-road bike can still include lots of hard parts, things like high-compression pistons, power-producing pipes and all the rest, but in this electronic age some pretty impressive gains are going to be found in those black boxes controlling engine management. Swapping to a performance ECU and its respective sensors, inputs and controllers pays big dividends. For all of those go-fast hard parts, Athena is certainly a well-known source. Then there’s GET, a division of Athena specializing in the electronic side of things. That division specializes in the design and production of performance ECUs and data-acquisition and adjustment systems to go with them. And as the engineers at GET put it, it’s “plug-and-play technology at your fingertips.” The GET GP1 and RX1 Power Pro ECUs are available for popular 4-stroke off-road bikes. They come with two custom-programmed performance maps already loaded, maps developed by the GET Racing Department.
Map 1 delivers full power and Map 2 dials things back for soft power when that’s required – riders can switch between the two on the fly. With a GET performance ECU and some of the accessories to go with it, custom tuning and optimum performance truly are right at a rider’s fingertips. With the GET GPA, your customers can dial in the perfect launch settings and perform several other functions for the ultimate in fuel management control out on the track.
Developed with some of the best MXGP and AMA teams, the GET ECUs self-calibrate to temperature and humidity conditions, and auto-calibrate to maximize the performance of any type of race-pipe exhaust, highcompression/race piston, race-style connecting rod or race crankshaft. The ECUs are also Wi-Fi ready for wireless re-mapping, checking diagnostics or completing lots of other functions directly from a smartphone or tablet. They’re fully programmable and able to save hundreds of different settings for specific track conditions and riding styles, all accomplished with the free WiGET smartphone app. The ECUs can be then be removed at the end of the season and fit to a customer’s next bike. All this gets even better with the addition of some of those GET ECU accessories. The GPA (Get Power Assistance) switch, for one, puts 10 power assist settings at a rider’s fingertips, right up on the handlebar. Easily adjusted, the GPA can dial in the perfect launch settings, it can set real-time warning levels with shift light and overheating alarms and it can automatically drop the revs when the rear wheel is about to slip too much.
The GP1 and RX1 Power Pro ECUs from Athena’s GET division come with custom-programmed performance maps that were developed by the company’s racing department.

EXHAUSTS
Retro-Futurism
Modern Materials, Classic Styling Akrapovič’s new Slip-On Line exhaust for Kawasaki’s Z900RS offers that retro-styled sport machine some modern performance and a healthy dose of good looks.
W
hile most riders appreciate modern technology and have no desire to go backwards in that department, retro styling is all the rage right now. Plenty of aftermarket powersports companies are fusing the new and the old in an effort to give riders a retro look without the retro tech. It’s the same great style from the past, only better.
Check the Parts Unlimited catalog for a full list of applications in Akrapovič’s Slip-On Line (Titanium). The titanium slip-on is available for a wide range of brands and models, including most sportbikes and a growing list of adventure-touring bikes. The adventure-touring line includes, among others, the Honda Africa Twin, BMW R 1200 GS Adventure and BMW S 1000 XR.
The latest new exhaust from Akrapovič is designed to be both modern and old-fashioned at the same time. Racinginspired materials have been shaped into a retro-inspired exhaust for the Kawasaki Z900RS. This newest addition to Akrapovič’s Slip-On Line (Titanium) takes its styling cues from the Z900RS, which itself has a retro racing style that reflects the bike’s origins.
It should come as no surprise that the materials used in the Slip-On Line (Titanium) exhaust for the Kawasaki Z900RS were chosen through development on the racetrack. Company founder Igor Akrapovič was a motorcycle racer himself. The company is still headquartered in Slovenia, where he established it 26 years ago.
Akrapovič calls the slip-on an up-to-date adaptation of the classic muffler that fits the styling of the Z900RS. The lightweight, high-grade titanium exhaust is finished in a black coating. The aluminum end-cap offers some contrast and a distinctive look. Like other applications in the Slip-On Line (Titanium), this new exhaust for the Kawasaki is designed to install simply. Additionally, the exhaust does not require remapping, making it a bolt-on-and-go option. Akrapovič also offers a header than can be paired with the slip-on to increase power and torque levels while also delivering a deeper sound.
To date, more than 100 world champions in both two- and four-wheel racing series have been crowned while using Akrapovič exhausts. ■

RIDING APPAREL
Lightweight Protection
Introducing the Bionic Action Jacket
The Alpinestars Bionic Action Jacket
A
lpinestars has been pioneering motocross and off-road safety for the last five decades. This season its new range of versatile body protection brings some of the most highly advanced ergonomics and lightweight CE certified protection for men, women and youth riders. The new Bionic Action Jacket is a lightweight upper body protection piece featuring a detailed build design, in which every extraneous material and surface area has been scaled back. The result is an ultra slim-profiled performance fit and reduced bulk, meaning the jacket won’t compromise riding movement. Both the close fit and weight saving are boosted thanks to the Bionic Action Jacket’s technical Elastane stretch mesh main construction. This mesh chassis also introduces high levels of breathability and internal body cooling. The stretch mesh chassis is crucial in helping the Bionic Action Jacket retain its shape and structure, regardless of the stresses and forces placed upon it. This is critical in the case of the jacket’s protective capabilities as it helps keep the protection plates close to the body while riding on undulating surfaces and significantly improving its protective performance in case of a crash. All of the Bionic Action Jacket’s panel shells are constructed from an injected advanced polymer blend,

and are anatomically designed to provide flexibility while protecting against roost and impact. The polymer blend is strong while also possessing excellent weight-saving properties giving the jacket an overall lightweight feel. The panels are CE certified, shoulder and elbow (Level 1), back (Level 1) and divided chest panel (Level 2). The Bionic Action Jacket’s protector plates feature an innovative design incorporating an integrated grid structure that absorbs and dissipates the impact forces of a crash. It does this by using a connected matrix of cells that compress and interlock to spread the energy force across the cellular structure, thus dampening the impact for the rider. On the rear of the Bionic Action Jacket, the back protector features three articulated plates to allow for greater flexibility and adaptive back fit in all riding positions. The plates lock in the event of a crash to reduce potential injury in the spine area. Additionally, the jacket’s plates are ergonomically contoured to follow the natural curvature of the body and feature air channeling to improve airflow and prevent overheating. All plates are mounted on padded perforated panels. The Bionic Action Jacket is highly customizable with plenty of adjustment features to personalize the jacket to a rider’s specific needs. The elastic kidney belt system features improved ergonomics and a customized, secure fit. The jacket is compatible with Alpinestars’ Bionic Neck Support (BNS). The Youth Bionic Action Jacket shares all the same protective performance benefits as the adult version and has been specifically engineered for young or smallerframed riders. This protection jacket is developed in two waist-to-shoulder dimensions in order to cover all the kids/ youth body sizes from 6-10 and from 10-14 years, and is compatible with Alpinestars’ Youth Neck Support (YNS). ■

Brake Rotors for Racing
B
raking has a long history of winning championships across all racing segments — 113 World Championships to date — due in part to designing the right rotor for the right environment.
The Batfly Aluminum Disc and Batfly S3 Disc are proof. The Batfly Aluminum rotor is designed for motocross and Supercross riders, while the Batfly S3 is ideal for off-road competition, where a rotor has to stand up to Mother Nature. Both can be used in either racing segment, of course. The main differences between the two rotors are the carrier and construction. On the full-floating Batfly Aluminum, both the carrier and the six connecting rivets are aluminum for optimal weight savings. The Batfly S3, however, is a semi-floating design, connected to the outer ring in three areas directly and riveted in three areas. Its stainless steel carrier is durable yet narrow enough to reduce the chances of it being obstructed by rocks or other hazards. Both discs utilize the patented Batfly outer ring, where grooves on the disc surface create a self-ventilating

mechanism to cool the rotor. The outside and inside of the disc’s diameter have a non-round design to allow for better radial expansion of the disc in extreme heat conditions. The aluminum carrier version is available in 270mm and 280mm, while the S3 semi-floating version is available in 270mm. For 2018, some of the big names in Supercross are using Braking, like Pro Circuit Kawasaki, Kawasaki Team Green, Yamaha Factory Racing and Chad Reed. ■

Innovative Design in a Powersports Piston
Wiseco’s Racer Elite piston line features an innovative design that provides a nice boost in performance.
A
nother year of Supercross, and another year of exciting new machines under race team tents. Supercross teams equip their bikes with some of the most advanced and well-performing parts available. While there are a lot of amazing looking parts on the outside of the motorcycles, some of the most impressive technology can be found inside the engine. Wiseco’s Racer Elite piston line brings factory team level technology to the powersports market. In testing, the Wiseco Racer Elite 4-stroke pistons reduced blow-by by almost 40 percent and netted a 2.9hp gain.
Racer Elite pistons are CNC machined billet aluminum, featuring an asymmetrical skirt design. This means there is less skirt material on the minor thrust side of the piston, resulting in less unneeded material, lower friction and less weight. Asymmetrical skirts have been used frequently in the automotive racing world, but are being introduced to powersports with Racer Elite pistons. Performance increase with the Racer Elite line is also attributed to the ultra-flat piston ring groove and lapped compression ring. The ring grooves are precision machined for extreme flatness, and the compression rings are lapped for a flatter surface, which allows for a more efficient compression seal. Racer Elite piston kits come complete with piston, rings, circlips and a DLC coated wrist pin, and they are available for popular dirt bike applications. ■

The OptiMate DC to DC battery charger
here are times where your customers are nowhere near an AC power outlet, but they need to charge a vehicle’s 12V battery. Sure, you can jumpstart a 12V battery from another vehicle, but that’s not an option if you have a motorcycle with a 12.8V-13.2V lithium battery. A discharged lithium battery can suffer serious damage if high current is dumped into it, especially the smaller four cell (2-3Ah) batteries now delivered standard in 2018 off-road motorcycles.
The OptiMate DC to DC will automatically reset the BMS (if the battery has one) and then save a low-volt battery, charge it at 2 Amps, test and then maintain the battery. The good news is, with a charge rate of 2 Amps, your customer will be ready to start their engine in a relatively short period of time. It’s even quicker if the motorcycle is fitted with a lithium battery. The OptiMate DC to DC model TM500 (p/n 3807-0339) is a perfect travel companion for that dead battery emergency, trackside or on tour. ■

A Guide to Sunstar’s Chain Options
I
n addition to OEM and aftermarket sprocket applications, Sunstar also has a variety of chain designs, sizes and lengths to pair with them.
The MXR1 (“Motocross Xtreme Racing”) chain is a premium, highly durable non-sealed chain for off-road bikes up to 500cc. TripleStar treated ultra-hard pins and heat-treated components add durability, and the 120link length weighs less than 3 pounds. The MXR1 comes in 108- to 120-link lengths with a clip-type connecting link. Similarly, the MXR chain in 420 and 428 sizes fits mini off-road and street motorcycles of 150cc and smaller. The XTG is Sunstar’s premier, racing-level off-road chain. TripleGuard sealed rings offer protection and lubrication. The XTG, in 100- and 120-link lengths, is ideal for off-road motorcycles and ATVs of 750cc or smaller. Sunstar’s 520SSR (“Standard Sealed Ring”) heavy-duty O-ring chain is made with heat-treated alloy steel and rubber O-rings. The 520 chain, in 100- to 120-link lengths, fits motorcycles of up to 400cc.

The RDG is a heavy-duty street line of sealed chains in 520, 525 and 530 sizes, and it fits most street models. The DualGuard sealed ring gives it better lubrication and less friction. The RTG1 is the premium-level road racing chain with a rivet-type connecting link, available in 520, 525 (suitable for off-road enduro racing) and 530 options. Triple Guard sealed ring technology can endure highheat, extreme riding conditions. The EXR1 has a press fit, clip-type connecting link. The DualGuard sealed ring style is thinner than the standard, offering lighter weight for off-road riding. ■

Securing Tank Bags Without Straps The ST602 offers a variety of storage options.
Each of the bags in the Tanklock line feature a mounting mechanism for attaching to the gas cap flange.
The XS320 can hold a map or a full-sized tablet device.
The GIVI Tanklock bags mount to a specially designed flange that connects to a motorcycle’s gas cap frame. Here’s the MT505 mounted on a BMW R nineT.
N
o matter what kind of luggage it is, no one wants a lot of straps hanging off of it to get tangled up and snagged on things. And, when it comes to motorcycle tank bags, having something that snaps into place — and then comes off just as easily — without requiring straps or magnets means a bag with clean styling and quick mounting. GIVI tackled the problem of providing a convenient tank bag without the fuss (or straps) by introducing the Tanklock system. Tanklock works by connecting a unique structure at the base of each compatible bag to a highresistance nylon ring that is permanently installed on the gas cap frame. The nylon ring needs to be coupled with a bike/brand specific flange to be mounted to the gas cap frame, and the list of applications can be found in the Parts Unlimited catalog. As with all tank bags, it should be noted that some medium to large bags will interfere with the steering or handlebars of particular models, so size must also be taken into consideration. Most tank bags in the Tanklock series allow for a bit of adjustability of the base, both to better fit the shape of the tank and the preferences of the rider.

Once the nylon ring and flange are installed, attaching the tank bag is easy: just align the bag to the ring and press down until it clicks into place. Removal of the bag is equally simple – pull the red lever at the base of the bag to disconnect it.
Each GIVI Tanklock tank bag has a touchscreen friendly clear pocket, a rain cover, reflective trims or prints, and carrying handles or straps. Most of them are expandable, too, and have a port for electrical connections. The tank bags in GIVI’s Tanklock line range in size from the diminutive 3-liter XS319 to the voluminous 25-liter XS306. The XS319 is ideal for smaller, slimmer models, like naked bikes and sportbikes. The XS306 as well as the XS308, which has a 20-liter capacity, are designed to follow the lines of most Adventure Touring bike tanks. The XS306 is expandable in case a rider doesn’t need all 25 liters. It really is designed with adventure in mind, coming with a clear, waterproof map holder. A removable tablet holder, shoulder strap for easy carrying and inner wall stiffeners add to its perks. The XS308 as well as the 15-liter XS320 — which is designed for the Honda Africa Twin — also have map holders. For riders who prefer high-tech navigation, the ST602 and ST603 (5 and 15 liters, respectively) thermoformed bags have smartphone holders on top instead. Riders who know where they are going can opt for the thermoformed MT505, a five-liter bag with an interior smartphone holder. ■
