Looking Back and Looking Ahead by D on Em de

his issue includes feature stories about subjects I have written about here in recent months. Following up on my previous comments about a 1970 Honda CL350 that was refurbished by the team at AFT Customs, in this issue we show what can also be done with old dirtbikes. Nobody knows more about vintage motocross bikes than Rick Doughty at Vintage Iron, so when we heard he had his Parts Unlimited catalog out to begin a makeover of a 1990s Yamaha YZ250, we got a photographer over to his shop to follow how it all came together. See for yourself, beginning on page 66. My point about bringing those old bikes back to life is there is a big gap between new motorcycles and what is usually available on the used bike lot at many motorcycle dealerships. Most of the time, the inventory includes worn out motorcycles just as they were traded in. With some investment in time and replacing worn or damaged products, you will see that some very presentable and saleable motorcycles can be put together right in your service department. While we’ll keep an eye out for what the crew at AFT Customs or Rick Doughty are refurbishing next, we’re also following some programs that look ahead to the future. A few months back, I also wrote about the United States Motorcycle Coaching Association, a relatively new organization designed to help the sport grow by “training the trainers.” What that means is that the many independent motorcycle riding and racing caches in America can now tap into programs and expertise of legendary racing champions like Mark Blackwell, Jeff Emig, Destry Abbott, Josh Hayes and more. See page 48 for our report on how it has progressed.

Another great new program that Parts Unlimited is very much involved with is called the RiDE Outreach Initiative, a program designed to bring new buyers to the motorcycle sport by taking the experience out on the Monster Jam show circuit. To date, they are reaching 600-1,000 people per event, with an average of 300 attendees getting their first motorcycle riding experience. Produced by the Motorcycle Industry Council with support by Feld Entertainment, Parts Unlimited is at the events with Thor, Moose Racing and Z1R riding gear. Check out that story beginning on page 18. The Parts Magazine team was in Indianapolis in February for the Parts Unlimited NVP Product Expo and we have a full report in this issue, as well as a look at the ongoing Parts Unlimited Helmet & Apparel Tour. If you haven’t attended one of those yet, be sure to ask you Parts Unlimited sales rep for info on when one of the events will be in your area. ■

Countdown to Selling Season MINNESOTA DEALERS INSPECT ALL-NEW GEAR Story and Photos by Guido Ebert

A

steady stream of area powersports retailers visited the Parts Unlimited 2018 Spring Helmet & Apparel Tour stop in Minnesota in early March.

The diverse group of multi-line dealers and independent shops all came to learn more about the latest in gear trends and top-selling new-for-2018 products from Alpinestars, Arctiva, Icon, Moose Racing, Slippery, THOR and Z1R. It was just one stop on the multi-city tour that is giving dealers the opportunity to see and try on all of the new gear so they can make better buying decisions. With the assistance of their local sales reps, combined with the expertise of the vendors, it is easy to understand that this is the best way to select the right gear for each dealer’s customer base. Alpinestars introduced retailers to its growing line of Tech-Air airbag-compatible jackets and large selection of gloves and boots for on- and off-road riders. Brian Bybee, from Ray’s Sport & Cycle took the opportunity to try on some of the new gear and learn more about the line from Alpinestars’ J.P. Nation. Minnesota is a hotbed for snowmobiling, so it was no surprise to see retailers checking up on Arctiva helmets, apparel, gloves and boots.

Icon’s striking new AirFlite helmets and Icon 1000 line of textile jackets attracted a good number of visitors looking for new street styles. Empire Cycle’s Jen Sikes checked in with Icon’s Kat Foster to get the scoop on new gear that would be popular with the independent store’s customer base.

Parts Unlimited rep Rob Oliva (left) was just one of many Parts employees on hand to help walk attending dealers through the product selection on display. Josh Herman of Heinen’s Motorsports spent the evening getting a hands-on look at the gear and apparel.

The 2018 Helmet & Apparel Tour is all about getting an up-close-and-personal look at all the new gear coming down the line for the selling season. Sam Demiller of Starr Cycle gets a good look at a new Thor helmet.

Thor’s Alex Fox (left) goes over the company’s new apparel with Wayne Bedeaux (middle) and Katie Bedeaux of Leo’s South, a multi-line dealership in Lakeville, MN.

Brian Bybee (left) of Ray’s Sport and Cycle spent some time getting familiar with Alpinestars’ new Tech-Air airbag-compatible jackets. J.P. Nation of Alpinestars was there with all the details.

Darren Carlson of Z1R goes over the features and benefits of a pair of the company’s boots for Bailey Sammet of Simply Street Bikes.

Not only does the Helmet & Apparel Tour give dealers the chance for in-depth product education at each stop, the setups also serve as a good example of product merchandizing and display.

Boasting some big names recently, Minnesota has become a new motocross mecca, making it the perfect place to flash Moose Racing’s colorful display of MX boots and goggles. And, given that Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 lakes, many of the dealers in attendance inspected Slippery’s gear for personal watercraft enthusiasts.

Thor has been capitalizing on its 50th anniversary celebration in 2018 with the introduction of the Hallman line of new gear offering old-school dirt style, and showcased its large selection of jerseys and helmets. There was plenty to see at Z1R with its on- and off-road helmets, large selection of leather gear, and trending Duke flannel and LS denim riding shirts featuring carry-conceal pockets. ■

D

rag Specialties and Parts Unlimited have signed on as sponsors of the 2018 American Flat Track series, and are backing two of the biggest names and championship threats in the AFT paddock — reigning AFT Grand National Champion Jared Mees and Shayna Texter, the winningest rider in AFT Singles history. Mees was practically a force of nature aboard his No. 1 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing Scout FTR750 in 2017, storming through the AFT Twins season in record-breaking fashion. With the entire paddock gunning for him in 2018, Mees has capitalized on last year’s jaw-dropping success by securing backing from Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited to aid in his title defense. “It’s always great to have committed, high-end sponsors,” Mees said, “and the Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties folks

are fantastic – for me, for flat track and for motorcycling in general. I’m really pumped about our partnership.” Texter is coming off a five-win season that upped her alltime AFT Singles wins mark to 11 (three more than any other rider). As impressive as it was, she’s reshuffling the deck this season in search of at least attaining her first AFT Singles crown. Just two weeks ago she announced she’d be running her own program in 2018 with support from Husqvarna Motorcycles. The seriousness of Texter’s all-new effort has been made all the more obvious with the addition of Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited. “As a rider and new team owner, I understand the value of having the support of great sponsors,” Texter said. “Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties are perfect examples, and I couldn’t be happier having them on my team.” “We are very excited to have Jared Mees and Shayna Texter as part of our Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited family,” Both Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties are excited to welcome Mees and Texter to the family, said Hylton Beattie, Global Motorsports Director for Parts Unlimited. ”These two exceptional athletes will make a great addition to the already strong group of riders that we sponsor in two-wheel motorsports worldwide,” Beattie said. “American Flat Track is the world’s premier dirt track motorcycle racing series, and one of the longest running championships in the history of motorsports. It’s very fitting for us to be involved in this series.” ■

assani Xhaust has made a big move into building exhaust products for that Yamaha Bolt, that motorcycle that’s attracted a big following of younger riders drawn to its stripped-down styling and wallet friendly price. “We’ve been making pipes for the Bolt for over a year and have found a growing community of riders who love that bike,” says company founder Darryl Bassani.

Stunt riders – and Bolt fans – Andrew Charrier (left) and Joey Robinson (right) put on a stunt exhibition jam packed with smoky burnouts and 12-o’clock wheelies.

In an effort to publicize its metric offerings Bassani Xhaust recently hosted a special open house in January for members of the SoCal Bolt Riders Club. The event is part of the company’s larger efforts to reach out to riders of machines like the Honda Grom and the Bolt. These gatherings are the brainchild of Gary Naito, Bassani Xhaust digital marketing manager. The Bolt event at Bassani’s

Southern California headquarters attracted upwards of 80 riders who were treated to a catered lunch, followed by a live stunt show by Joey Robinson and Andrew Charrier. Both Robinson and Charrier rode Bolts equipped with Bassani exhaust systems. Those who wished could get their bike dyno-ed at the live dyno brought by Jiffy Tunes. There were also displays and prizes from Biltwell, Legend Suspension, Memphis Shades, and Saddlemen. Company founder and namesake Darryl Bassani offered up a tour to members of the SoCal Bolt Riders Club during an open house for the fans of Yamaha’s bobber.

One major highlight was the guided tour and exhaust-design clinic put on by Bassani himself, where he shared his decades of experience in the business. As a marketing tool, hosting an event like this has proven to be a great success for Bassani. According to Naito, every one of the 80-plus riders who attended is a current or potential customer who can directly influence hundreds more. In fact, a number of those in attendance were actively posting about the event on social media. Robinson and Charrier were even posting video of their stunting while the event was happening. “It’s fun to get riders in here and show them how we do what we do,” says Bassani. “Exhaust systems are about a lot more than just looking pretty and when I show people and see them get excited about our designs, power, and sound … it’s just great because we’re proud of what we do. The RiDE program introduces new riders to two and four wheels.

These first-time riders are getting into proper riding gear right from the beginning.

Moose Racing, Thor and Z1R are front and center at each of the RiDE events.

Let’s RiDE!

Finding the Next Generation

I

t is no secret that attracting new, young riders and their families is critical to the future of the Powersports industry. Doing so means reaching out to non-riders with the opportunity to get some real life seat time.

The Motorcycle Industry Council, Feld Entertainment, and Parts Unlimited have joined forces to support the new RiDE Outreach Initiative, a program designed to reach beyond motorcycle enthusiasts, taking the Powersports story and experience to the massive nationwide Monster Jam truck series audience. “We’ve had 600-1,000 people per event go through part or all of the RiDE program,” says Tim Buche, president of the MIC. “There has been an average of 300 new riders getting their memorable first ride experience at each event. When the kids put riding gear on for the first time they feel like super heroes and when they learn to ride its almost magical.” For its part, Parts Unlimited brands Thor, Moose Racing and Z1R are providing riding gear to help support the initiative. Not only will those latent riders get the chance to experience riding firsthand, they’re also be introduced to some of the

most high quality gear in the industry. RiDE is about getting new buyers interested, swinging their legs over seats, and getting behind the handlebars of dirtbikes and ATVs, with professional guidance from Motorcycle Safety Foundation RiderCoaches and Instructors. There is also information on taking riding classes, details about local dealerships and nearby riding areas. The demographic of the Monster Jam truck series audience is ideal for the Powersports business. With an average household income of $78,000, a third of them are 25-34 years old, another third are 35-44 years old. Nearly half of them are female and three-quarters of them have children. Plus, families that attend the Monster Jam series are already Powersports fans and are more likely to want to participate in a Powersport activity like learning to ride. The free RiDE zone is in the Pit Party and is for families attending the Monster Jam events. It is designed to easily allow first time and new riders to have an introduction to the fun of Powersports. No gear is required as the Parts Unlimited brands are supplying everything needed.

A large area is devoted to the actual “learn-to-ride” area where children between 6- and 16-years old, accompanied by a parent, can have their first experience on a motorcycle or ATV. Here they are suited up in Thor, Moose Racing, and Z1R gear and are taught the importance of proper riding gear. The kids are taken under the wing of a properly trained and certified MSF RiderCoaches and ATV Safety Institute Instructors and matched to the proper sized dirtbike or ATV. They are taught the fundamentals and have their first experience riding on one of the courses laid out in the RiDE experience. The focus is on offering children their first riding experience in a monitored, properly coached, environment.

For children who have never been on two wheels before and are under the age of 5, there is an area featuring those unique pedal-less Strider balance bikes, which are specially designed to get children used to balancing on two wheels. In the RiDE zone moto photo area, newbies can get on one of many custom trainers featuring full size race bikes to get their picture taken. This is an outstanding tool to help share the experience via social media. There is also a virtual reality area where consumers can take a virtual reality ride on a dirtbike or ATV through the trails of Colorado wearing VR-goggles for a bike immersive experience. “The MIC is grateful to MIC members Feld Entertainment and Parts Unlimited for their partnership in RiDE and making it the success it is,” Buche says. “Programs like this will help inspire the next generation of customers. The MIC is exploring additional first-ride opportunities where we hope to offer ways to get more dealers involved at the local level.” ■

PUTTING A LIGHT TOUCH TO A CUSTOM INDIAN

T

he Indian Scout Sixty has become a pretty popular machine. And, why not? With prices starting at just under nine-grand, this mid-sized cruiser has found a home not only with traditional V-twin enthusiasts, but with riders coming from import middleweights and sportbikes, riders now looking for something different. “And, I wanted to do something a little different with a Scout Sixty, too,” says builder Carl Brouhard, the guy who put this one together. And little is the operative word here. Carl went at this Indian with a light, but well-thought-out touch. The result is a knockout Scout. Built to not only catch the eye of riders walking into a dealership, Brouhard says he also wanted to make this bike seem realistic to them – something decidedly custom, but also approachable and affordable. “It’s too easy,” he says, “to just go crazy with everything that’s available in the aftermarket, adding a bunch of stuff simply because you can.”

M AY 2 0 1 8

When a build goes over the top like that, he feels, potential customers can be overwhelmed. The bike might be cool, but it can also be too much. While some will relate, many won’t because they might not have the skill or the funds to pay for everything. Hence the clean, simple, minimalist approach here. “I wanted everyone to see this as a bike they could make themselves, see firsthand just how much impact a few simple changes could have,” Brouhard says. About a year ago, Brouhard says, he got serious about putting a Scout Sixty together, thinking about the bike, planning his moves and beginning to develop parts he might include. The whole Carl Brouhard Bomber line of bolt-on accessories got its start here, and those brass-accented parts have been included throughout. They’re on the fork-slider covers, on

Brouhard, who got his start doing custom paintwork and design for Arlen Ness, continued his Bomber accents with the brass-button details in his paint job. It’s on the side-panels of the gas tank, on the fenders, around the headlight rim, on the bucket and more. The bike’s base color, by the way, is Blood Orange, a limited-addition House Of Kolor blend. hilly weather and rough travel conditions couldn’t stop dealers and their staffs from making the second annual 2018 Parts Unlimited Indianapolis NVP Product Expo a rousing success. Apparently, the promise of seeing the hottest new products from more than 200 of the industry’s leading brands proved to be a major attraction. From the moment the show opened inside the Indiana Convention Center, the floor space – boasting a 50 percent larger footprint over the 2017 Expo – was packed with dealers and sales reps eager to seek out the products that will have cash registers ringing this sales season.

“This was a great event. The quality and number of vendors and dealers was impressive,” said Mike Collins, LeMans Corporation president and CEO. “Our reps were very excited about our new products and programs. It’s the first step to a successful year for us, our dealers, and hopefully for the entire industry.” The event kicked off with the Parts Unlimited sales force attending two days of intense sales training from some of the top vendors in those popular Parts catalogs. Over the weekend, there were standing-room only product-training seminars from vendors such as 100%, Alpinestars, Dunlop, GIVI, J.W. Speaker, and SENA.

FEB 10-11 / SHOW TIME: CHARGING INTO 2018

As soon as the seminars concluded, it was on. Dealers packed into a convention hall loaded down with new hard parts, accessories, riding apparel and gear, tools, accessories, cleaning supplies, replacement parts – you name it. There were show specials to be had, and savvy dealers jumped at the opportunity, knowing it is events like the NVP that give them a leg up on their competition. As it is with all the NVP Product Expos, it’s not only about business, there’s also room for good times and hanging loose. Dealers, reps and vendors gathered on Saturday night at the nearby Crane Bay event center for a Meet & Greet/Bike Show. There they enjoyed food, drinks, a lineup of dealer and vendor owned machines, and the chance to mingle and reconnect.

With the spring event now history, dealers can set their sights on that other show designed to help supercharge their selling power – the NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI. Talk with your Parts rep for details on how to attend the show on August 25 and 26. “There was a tremendous amount of enthusiasm from vendors, reps and dealers from the minute the show opened,” said Jeff Derge, LeMans Corporation’s vice president of sales. “The Meet & Greet at Crane Bay showcased a great bike show, along with great food and refreshments. Dealers renewed many old friendships and voted for their favorite bikes in the show. It was a very positive way to kick-start the 2018 season.”

iding in the dirt encompasses a number of disciplines, each with their own specific gear needs. Trail-riding gear needs a number of features to be practical, but it doesn’t need to be pricey. Moose Racing knows that plenty of riders want to gear up without spending a fortune, which is why they have a range of entry-level priced trail-riding gear to get riders ready to go. Moose Racing’s XCR line includes a jacket and pants constructed of a stretch nylon chassis that is durable, waterproof and breathable for a combination that performs well in all conditions. The XCR jacket has highdenier nylon panels in high wear areas, and the ergonomic sleeve design has stretch panels to create a comfortable, no-bind fit. Five zippered intake and exhaust vents regulate body temperature, but since trail riding is liable to heat things up, the internal polyester mesh liner wicks moisture away from the skin. To go with the five zippered vents, there are also five zippered pockets, including two internal pockets. The rear pocket can be used to stow the jacket when it’s not being worn, and an included belt system allows the

compact package to be worn around the waist. Sizes run from S to 3XL, and the adjustable collar, hem and cuffs allow for a precise fit. The XCR pants also have zippered intake and exhaust vents, and the pre-curved knees are comfortable and roomy in a riding stance. Full-grain leather knee and leg inner panels add extra protection from solid objects, while the internal elastic rain gaiter cuff adds protection from the weather. Zippered hand pockets and thigh pockets as well as a waist adjustment system are other perks. The XCR pants come in sizes 30 to 48. The XCR pullover jacket provides a serious barrier against wet weather. The 2L nylon stretch fabric is waterproof, windproof and breathable, with high-denier nylon in critical wear areas. Waterproof seam sealing and a durable water repellent coating provide even more defense against rain. Moose Racing means it when it says pullover – the jacket can be pulled on even while wearing a helmet thanks to a three-quarter front zipper. Full-length arm zippers also make it easier to get the jacket on over riding gear. In addition to two front hand pockets, the XCR pullover also

has the large back pocket with a webbing belt system. Temperature controls include zippered vents, a microfiber lined collar and a double front zipper flap. The cuff, collar and mid-waist are all adjustable, and sizing goes all the way up to a 4XL. Another entry-level jacket designed for tackling trails is the Qualifier jacket, which has the added versatility of zip-off sleeves. Five adjustable vents are fitted onto the high-denier woven polyester chassis, which is waterresistant and has double-stitched seams for durability. Other elements of the Qualifier include a polyester mesh lining that wicks moisture, adjustable cuffs and five pockets. Sizing runs to a 3XL. Moose Racing’s Qualifier Over the Boot (OTB) pants are a more trail-specific version of the company’s classic Qualifier pants, which have traditional motocross styling. The OTB version is made of a high-denier polyester chassis, and the graphics are sublimated so that the material retains its breathability and the colors will not fade. The legs are designed for plenty of room and comfort, whether a rider is up on the pegs or settled in the seat. The pre-bent legs include spandex stretch panels for

increased mobility, and the oversized knee area has additional high-denier nylon panels to guard against wear and tear. Zippered openings at the bottom of the legs make putting boots on under the pants quick and easy. Sizing runs from 28 to 54, and the waist has a three-point adjustment system. The XC1 rain jacket can be used on or off the bike. The seam-sealed laminated nylon shell is lightweight, making it easy to stow as a “just-in-case” option. Mid-weight nylon panels in the shoulder and elbow areas increase durability. A fixed rear vent keeps the inside of the rain jacket from getting steamy, while the internal perforated poly mesh liner wicks moisture. Two hand pockets and two internal pockets keep things zipped up tight and dry, while the adjustable collar, hem and cuffs keep the wearer secure from the rain, too. The sizing goes to a 4XL. ■

ost audio equipment on your customers’ motorcycles requires antennas. Whether they are CBs, radios, or communications devices, they pull in and send out their signals via an antenna. J&M Corporation has a line of antennas designed to enhance the performance of your customers’ devices. Take the J&M shorty CB antenna staff upgrade for the 2018 Honda Gold Wing as an example. This new shorty antenna model comes out of the packaged pre-tuned for all 40-channel CB radio frequencies.

J&M Corporations’ new shorty CB antenna staff upgrade for the 2018 Honda Gold Wing replaces the stock unit for improved performance and a look that’s sleek and low profile.

To install, simply unscrew by hand the stock Honda CB antenna, screw in the included SS antenna stud, slide over the molded trim bushing and then screw on the new J&M shorty CB staff. With total overall length at approximately 17-inches, this new shorty CB antenna option looks great and compliments the lines and contours of the new Gold Wing. J&M also has offerings for your Harley-Davidson customers, with audio systems for the 2009-2013, and the 2014-2018 Harley Street Glide, Road Glide, Ultra, Ultra Limited or CVO. This new shorty antenna model from J&M comes out of the packaged pre-tuned for all AM/FM CB and WB frequencies, so you don’t need to worry about which side of the tail trunk or rear fender to mount them. The antenna is an improvement over stock, offering boosted performance for the CB radio band transmission distance. Installation is easy; simply unscrew the stock antenna and screw on the new J&M shorty. Both long and short antenna tip cover options are included, with a total overall length of approximately 17-inches. Some customers prefer “hidden” antennas and J&M offers those as well. J&M’s new Passive FLEXPOWER hide-a-way AM/FM/WB antenna works for all three reception bands to altogether eliminate the rear mounted antenna on your customer’s 2014-2018 Harley Ultra, StreetGlide, RoadGlide or RoadGlide Ultra.

This new passive version (no 12v connection required) provides all of the great reception performance of J&M’s original design, but with the correct FAKRA style plug on the end of the cable for direct connection to the 20142018 Harley radio. Installation is easy, as there are no wires to cut or splice. This antenna kit includes complete and detailed installation instructions. This unique in-fairing antenna is manufactured complete at J&M’s shop in Tucson, AZ using only high-grade copper coaxial cable and stinger wire, for maximum durability and performance. J&M’s new Passive FLEXPOWER hide-a-way AM/FM/WB antenna is also offered for the 1985-2013 versions of the Harley Classic (Bat Wing) or Road Glide fairing, with the factory Harley radio or aftermarket radio. Easy to install, the antenna wire lead is secured in the fairing with included double sided tape clips. ■

Torsten Hallman Racing Accept No Substitutes

D

o you know where that iconic Thor name comes from? It’s the acronym for Torsten Hallman Original Racewear, the motocross gear introduced back in 1968 by Torsten Hallman, the man widely credited with popularizing motocross in America.

the new lineup, there is also a lineup of Hallman Racing gear. This collection of jerseys, gloves and casual wear is not only as retro-cool as can be, it’s also the kind of gear that might one day be collectible.

As a four-time World Motocross Champion, Hallman certainly had the credentials needed for that job, and certainly all the know-how and experience needed to serve up all those new U.S. riders with the gear they needed.

The first products out of San Diego during Hallman Racing’s 1968 start were gloves, gloves adapted from the Bandy gloves used in Hallman’s native Sweden for winter sports. With Hallman’s improvements in design, making them specific to motocross racing, they were an immediate success.

It’s been 50 years since all this started and over those decades there has been an endless list of champions using, endorsing and winning with the gear Hallman pioneered. Guys like Roger DeCoster, Marty Smith, Rick Johnson, Jeff Emig, Chad Reed, Jeremy McGrath, Travis Pastrana, and Ryan Villopoto all raced and won with Thor, and that’s naming just a few.

So, naturally there are gloves in the Hallman Lineup of 2018. The Hallman Digit Gloves are no-frills in appearance and all business in performance. A vintageinspired motocross glove, the four-way stretch mesh panels are coupled with vented goat skin, foam knuckle guards, silicone-treated finger tips and hook-and-loop wrist closures. At $25 retail, they’ll be tough to pass up.

Fast forward to 2018. To celebrate its Golden Anniversary not only has Thor included a 50th Anniversary Line into

For its Hallman Racing gear lineup, Thor has packed a number of performance-minded features into a range that offers throwback styling and vintage good looks. That bike’s a throwback too; A 1968 Yamaha DT-1. That twostroke dual-sport was a groundbreaking motorcycle that firmly established Yamaha’s place in the off-road market.

come with all the fit, finish, materials and performance of that popular Thor Pulse gear. This is a design that minimizes unnecessary material without hindering mobility. The jerseys feature moisture wicking materials and have silky smooth Softstretch™ collars. The look here is pure retro, vintage Hallman Racing at its best. Both jerseys have great looking, old-school designs and colors that will turn heads. Boldly striped and harkening back to the earliest, wild and wooly days of motocross in the USA, it’s a look that’s sure to be a hit. There is also a full selection of eye-catching casual wear. The Hallman Racing T-shirts and zipped-and-hooded sweatshirts all bear the original Hallman Racing name. Some of the designs even couple their vintage logos with graphics celebrating notable blasts-from-the-past like Carlsbad Raceway, the scene of so many monumental battles during the beginning days of motocross racing in America.

Back in the 1960s U.S. riders were intrigued, and a little puzzled, by that young, fast Swede wearing goatskin leather pants and riding the bike with a hard to pronounce name – Husqvarna. But, it didn’t take Torsten Hallman long to spot the American race scene potential and, just as importantly, its riders’ need for quality motocross gear. Over the years that gear has evolved with the sport, with changes big and small made as new challenges presented themselves and advancements took place. Today’s racers compete in an entirely different manner than in years past, moving around on their bikes in a way never thought possible. It’s a racing style that puts a significant amount of strain and stress on their gear. COACHING

Motocross, off-road, street, and road racing coaches gathered in Temecula, CA, along with industry executives and championship racers, for the second annual United States Motorcycle Coaching Association summit.

L

aunched in 2017, the United States Motorcycle Coaching Association aims to help grow the sport of motorcycling by establishing a network of skilled, certified coaches to provide instruction, encouragement and support to help create safe, lifelong riders. Fresh off of its second meeting summit in Southern California, the USMCA is charging forth with its planned purpose and a new affordable insurance program for certified coaches. The program offers insurance that can cover road, dirt and closecourse sessions. Under the guidance of co-founders – and industry luminaries – Mark Blackwell, Jon-Erik Burleson and Jeff Emig, the association is looking to help protect the future of the motorcycle industry, an aim that can also help support dealership business. “The U.S. Motorcycle Coaching Association will help attract new riders to the sport of motorcycling by lowering the barriers of entry with motorcycle coaching for beginners,” says Lindsey Lovell, content manager USMCA. “First-time riders will be able to access a strong network of professional motorcycle coaches to help coach them through Rider & Bike Preparation, Riding Basics and Introduction to the Track.”

At this year’s USMCA summit, the organization met with more 100 motorcycle coaches and industry professionals at the Temecula Creek Inn in Temecula, CA to discuss motorcycle coaching and how the industry can help grow the sport of motorcycling. Make no mistake, the trio heading up this effort each come with impressive credentials. Blackwell was the 1971 500cc Motocross National Champion and is a AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer. Burleson is the recently retired KTM North America president and son of ISDT and AMA Enduro legend Dick Burleson. Emig is a former AMA Motocross and Supercross champion, turned TV broadcaster. Burleson, the association’s chairman, kicked off the summit with the official messaging of the vision, purpose, mission and manifesto developed by the association over the last few months as well as how the USMCA will benefit motorcycle coaches. Association president Blackwell and Emig teamed up to present attendees with the current state of the USMCA. One important item was the announcement of the new insurance program with K&K insurance. Having coverage is important for coaches, and the program offers insurance for both sportbike and dirtbike training. Contact the USMCA for details.

Right: Multi-time Superbike Champion Josh Hayes helped lead a road racing and track day session. Below: USMCA founders Jeff Emig, Mark Blackwell, and Jon-Erik Burleson kicked off the summit.

Mark Blackwell and the other founders have certified more than 100 coaches and hope to certify up to 500 by the end of their third year.

There were also presentations by experts from all over the country, including a road racing session by racers Josh Hayes, Jason Pridmore, Chris Ulrich and Jake Zemke. Racer Destry Abbott led a discussion on off-road riding, while retired racer Trey Canard covered motocross and track safety.

The USMCA also address safety issues inherent to motorcycling by making sure coaches are trained in CPR, first aid and concussion management. They must also pass a background check, and are informed about the latest riding gear and riding techniques.

According to the USMCA, a certified USMCA coach can help to lower the barriers of entry into the sport of motorcycling. The belief is coaching can help make new riders feel more welcome into our sport and provide a safe and predictable pathway to enjoy the sport as their riding progresses. Since its launch, the USMCA has already certified more than 100 coaches across the country.

Certified coaches ultimately can be a resource for dealers who might already be working with a rider coach in their area. By encouraging that coach to get USMCA certified, they’re ensuring their customers are getting a highly skilled training. Dealership personnel can also get certified for inhouse expertise.

All of these coaches must commit themselves to the USMCA’s code of conduct, which says they “always conduct themselves according to the USMCA’s core values of safety, responsibility, integrity, respect, loyalty, accountability, courage, and excellence. USMCA coaches always display and foster sportsman-like conduct.”

USMCA coaches also work with local tracks to bring riders to the courses on a regular basis to train, enhance their skills and build confidence. The USMCA is continuing to build a nationwide network of coaches, train, certify and empower 500 coaches by the end of the third year to represent the very best the industry has to offer. The organization has its sites set on gaining 250,000 new and returning riders by 2025.

More exclusive than a large class, an USMCA coach is able to offer private lessons. This offers a more personal experience to learning to ride and has a “personal trainer” element that some nervous parents or shy adults can be more comfortable with.

“By assembling and certifying our industry’s finest coaches,” Lovell says, “we can ensure the safety, experience, and support is in place to attract, engage and retain lifelong riders and to help them become their best selves.” ■

The personal USMCA coach can also stay with a rider, if they desire, as they grow in their confidence and skills in the sport or perhaps decide to try racing. Many USMCA coaches train racers at the grass roots level as well as the top ranks of professional racers in motocross, off-road, and road racing.

TIRES

Slingshot For the Win The Tire that Won the Test

T

ires and wheels are what keep ATVs and side-bysides rolling. A customer with a good set of tires and wheels on their machine can conquer all types of terrain. Tires that perform create satisfied customers and a satisfied customer is a returning customer. AMS offers the tires and wheels that will keep your customers satisfied. Recently, Parts Unlimited dealer Chaparral Motorsports in San Bernardino, CA conducted a 25-inch ATV Tire Shootout. The shootout tested 21 tires from different manufacturers, and consisted of five different tests: a 2,000- pound sled pull, uphill challenge, high speed braking test, downhill braking test, and a mud bog challenge. The testing took three days and when the scores came in the AMS Slingshot was crowned the overall winner. The Slingshot performed in the top five in four of those tests, and was ranked by the dealership as No. 1 in the mud bog challenge.

After a number of heavy-duty tests, the team at Chaparral Motorsports named the AMS Slingshot the overall winner out of a field of 21 tires. They’re available as single tires, and as a kit with the AMS Roll’n 104 cast aluminum wheels.

This award-winning tire is available to your customers. Although designed as an aggressive mud tire, the SlingShot is also quite capable in all terrain, whether it is mud, snow, sand or a day of trail riding. While the wide-open tread design makes for an excellent selfcleaning tire, the dimpled tread elements on the surface of each lug offer better bite. The massive reinforced lugs extend to the centerline of the tire to smooth things out on the hard pack, but still keep clawing through when things get sloppy. Speaking of sloppy, large shoulder lugs wrap the sidewall to provide extra side bite when things get really slick. Your customers will appreciate the fact that these SlingShot tires are DOT for limited on road use. Available in 25-inch and 26-inch sizes, these sturdy 6-ply SlingShots are designed to launch through any mud pit or snow drift. Remember, the Slingshot won the overall and the mud bog challenge. This award winning tire is also available as part of an AMS tire/ wheel kit. The Slingshot tire/wheel kits feature AMS Slingshot tires mounted on Roll’n 104 cast aluminum rims. The wheels feature a painted matte black finish or machined black finish with the center caps included. Founded in 2002, it is AMS Tires & Wheel’s mission to develop and offer the highest quality specialty tires, inner tubes and wheels at a competitive rate and to provide the highest level of service available. ■

Adventure Riding as the Ultimate Test

See that blue line? That’s a long way to ride on one chain, but RK’s GXW chain was more than up for the job from start to finish.

DRIVE CHAINS

Columbia to Canada on One Chain

Asta Dovydenaite was one of two riders who put RK Chain GXW chains through a barrage of real-world tests, stacking up 18,951 miles through severe conditions.

M

otorcycle chains are not a glamorous product. While essential, they’re the oftenoverlooked heavy-duty workhorses that transfer engine power to the ground and move the motorcycle forward. RK Chains are designed to provide exceptional performance, and when presented with an opportunity to really show the capabilities and endurance of the GXW chain, RK jumped at the chance to put a couple of them through a barrage of real-world tests. The ultimate endurance test comprised a dual-sport endurance journey that spanned two continents. Two Lithuanian riders, Linas Mockevicius and Asta Dovydenaite, embarked on an 18,951-mile adventure that started in the jungles of Columbia and ended in Vancouver, Canada. Both riders were each given one GXW chain to be installed on their bikes, a 2016 BMW F800 GS Adventure and a 2008 BMW F650GS. These two GXW chains had to endure and work as designed throughout the entire trip, which meant they would have to perform through the hostile environment of rugged jungles, traverse rivers, cross deserts, endure salt flats, survive mud and withstand hundreds of miles of high-speed highway use. At the final destination in Vancouver, and after all those miles, their chains had only elongated a mere 0.2 percent.* For comparison, a 1 percent elongation from the chain’s original length is the maximum limitation to use for a sealed chain.

525 GXW XW-ring chain

RK’s GXW series chains are premium-quality XW-sealed chains and are available in 520, 525 or 530 pitch. XW-ring chains offer great high-speed, extreme-heat performance and are designed for a variety of environments from the street to off-road. GXW’s XW-seals feature two lubrication pools that help protect against high-speed abrasion and prevent dirt and debris from penetrating the inner rollers/bushings of the chain. With RK’s triple barrier protection, GXWs are long lasting compared to stock chains. GXW’s features create a perfect balance between high-tensile strength, light weight and maximizing long wear life so that GXW can handle just about anything your customers can dish out. When one chain can take a rider across two continents, the possibilities are endless. Linas and Asta continue to push RK Chains to the limits with new adventures in Africa. Follow their progress on Instagram: @2wheeled_asta and @2wheeled_linas. ■

»» For more product information on GXW Series chains, talk to your Parts Unlimited rep and visit RK’s website at www.rkexcelamerica.com.

*Even sealed chains require routine cleaning and maintenance in order to perform as designed. RK recommends that you use a cleaner that is specific to motorcycle chains and designed to be used on sealed chains. Do not use brake cleaner, engine cleaner or any cleaner that contains acid or caustic chemicals. These harsh ingredients can damage the chain’s seals, reducing the performance and wear life of the chain and voiding the chain’s warranty.

BRAKES

UTV Pads and Rotors Enhanced Stopping Power

EBC’s Carbon X brake pads are built for today’s larger, more power UTVs.

The R series brake pads from EBC are designed for UTVs that get used frequently in muddy, wet, sandy and dusty conditions.

T

he current generation of UTVs is bigger and more powerful than ever, and with that high performance horsepower, torque, speed and increased bulk comes the need for improved stopping power.

EBC also has rotors for those highperformance UTVs.

When you’re talking to your customers about upgrading their UTV brakes to something better than stock, show them what EBC Brakes has to offer. EBC Brakes offers some upgraded brake pad options for UTVs. The Carbon X range is designed for cooler braking at speed, meaning they don’t heat up as quickly and stay cooler, longer, than most other pads. They have an improved brake effect and a healthy lifetime. The Carbon X works best for your customers who tend to enjoy fire roads and trails, but usually stay out of the mud bogs and deep sand. The R series are heavy-duty sintered pads and are EBC’s highest durability pads. The R series are for your customers who go off-roading in mud, wet, sand and dusty conditions. This high-density sintered copper formula has been developed specifically for the off-road UTV market to give a longer product life under the most severe conditions. When your customers UTV rotors get bent, broken or just wear out, offer them EBC Brakes Rotors. All of EBC’s rotors

are made from heat-treated stainless steel for strength and long life. Your customers can choose from the D-Series premium replacement rotors, which are a direct replacement for OE rotors and are a great value for those on a budget. The steel construction helps extend the life of the rotors and pads by reducing galling. The UTVX rotors are a new range developed specifically for UTV machines, featuring lightweight vee profiled contours. They’re made from mill rolled steel, and are heattreated and then diamond ground. Not only do they look great, they also give improved braking performance over the stock unit. Plus, the UTVX Rotors are self-cleaning. ■

The Element of Sound

Metrix Audio Enters the UTV Market

Your customers can purchase the entire Element setup as a package, the UTV 1 kit. It includes the speakers, amp, all the necessary wiring, and a snap-in Bluetooth controller.

D

ealers who were at the Indianapolis NVP Product Expo got to check out the first-ever UTV audio system from Metrix Audio. Dubbed the Element line, it includes speakers, an amplifier and a snap-in Bluetooth receiver/controller. Its arrival on the market is the culmination of two years of research and development.

Since the Element line was designed from the ground up, Metrix Audio even considered the basic mounting system for the speakers. Since the point where speaker cabinets mount to the frame tend to be a weak spot, the Element 1 speakers were designed with a steel plate running through the cabinet.

Metrix Audio, part of the family of audio brands that includes Hogtunes and Wild Boar Audio, designed the new UTV products to have a universal fit as well as appeal for all types of UTV riding, from built show models to daily-use vehicles on farms and ranches.

The steel plate is a part of the mounting system, adding stability and strength to what might have otherwise been a spot prone to breaking. Pez says that despite their best efforts, he and his team have been unable to break the speaker cabinets.

The Element 1 speakers have an oval shape that measure in at 5x7 inches. That shaping was intentional. “What we found in the market is pretty much anybody putting nonvehicle-specific speakers in a UTV sets them up to mount behind them from their driving position,” explains Mike “Pez” Pesdirz, owner and president of Metrix Audio. “So, what we decided to do was offer an alternative by coming up with a speaker that could mount in front of you, which, from an audio perspective, is perfect, or they could be mounted behind you. We used an oval speaker because it allows the speaker to be narrower and not upset the line of sight as much if they are mounted in front of you.”

Another component of the Element line is the Element X amplifier (p/n 4405-0504), a UTV-specific amplifier that produces 150 watts of power when running one pair of speakers. The amp features a variety of technical perks, including low-level input, high-level input, adjustable gain and fully adjustable crossover for low-pass, high-pass or all-pass. That means the Element X is extremely flexible for audio applications, including subwoofers.

The Element 1 speakers are sold in pairs (p/n 4405-0505), and the included clamps are set up to fit 1½-inch to 2-inch roll bars. The strong metal mesh grill is durable enough for off-road riding, and the entire package is extremely weather resistant.

56

PARTS MAGAZINE

M AY 2 0 1 8

The Element X has a grooved cast aluminum housing that does more than look good, it is also a barrier against the elements. At the same time the Metrix Audio staff was trying to break the speaker cabinets, they also tried to drown the amplifier by blasting it with a highlevel pressure washer. The amplifier stood up to the test, though Pez is quick to discourage customers from trying to repeat the experiment.

METRIX AUDIO

The Element X amplifier produces 150 watts of power when running one pair of speakers, and 250 watts when running two sets of speakers. It’s ruggedly built to stand up against tough offroad use.

Metrix Audio’s Element 1 speakers were designed so they can be mounted in front of the UTV driver. They’re also super durable and extremely weather resistant.

The Element X comes with two sets of speaker wires coming out of it, so a second set of speakers can be added at any time. With two sets of speakers plugged directly into the amplifier, the Element X jumps from 150 watts up to 250 watts of power. The entire Element setup is available as the UTV 1 kit (p/n 4405-0503). In addition to a pair of Element 1 speakers and the Element X amplifier, the kit also includes a snap-in Bluetooth receiver/controller. Since most UTV dashes have a common opening, the receiver is designed to snap into that vacant space. Music can be beamed wirelessly to the system, and a knob on the front of the receiver controls volume, skips forward and backward through tracks and has a play/pause function.

The receiver also includes an auxiliary-in port for plugging in ancillary devices like a GPS or satellite radio, so the system can switch between the wireless and the wired feeds. The high-quality Bluetooth chip in the receiver ensures excellent sound reproduction. The UTV 1 kit includes absolutely everything necessary for installation, including all of the wiring and zip ties. To Pez, the Element line is a way for dealers to keep more UTV business under their roof. “We feel that there are a lot of dealers letting audio business walk to the local audio shop, and this will be a solution for them to offer a very nice, excellent performing system without letting that business walk from your door,” he says. ■

or Adventure riders having the right tires under them, tires built to perform in all conditions, is of paramount importance. The new Battlax Adventure A41 has that kind of all-weather, allsurface, long-lasting performance. Bridgestone states that the A41 offers upgrades across the board, features like enhanced grip and handling on both wet and dry surfaces, as well as strong cornering

power coupled with straight line stability. They feature a high level of feedback and contact feel, and excel at lowtemperature performance. All this comes with no sacrifice in tread wear. From its new carcass construction and the multicompound technology, to the tread patterns front and rear, the A41 doesn’t miss a trick. The A41 achieves an optimum level of pressure distribution across its enhanced contact patch thanks to the Monospiral Belt Construction (MSB), 3LC multi-compounding on the front and 3LC on the rear, plus a Cap And Base configuration. All of these features were developed with Bridgestone’s advanced UltimatEYE computer analysis. That means a higher level of traction in all conditions and on all surfaces. The A41’s new tread patterns play an important role, too. Bridgestone increased the Sea/Land ratio at the shoulder areas of the front tire while slightly decreasing that ratio

New Slip-Ons for the Bolt from the start with a line of exhausts for the Bolt that has proven popular with those riders. There are 2-into-1 systems, Radius Sweeper pipes and custom megaphone slip-ons in the range. “We build it, you make it your own,” is Yamaha’s slogan for the Bolt, and with Bassani’s products, your customers can do just that. The latest addition to all this is a brand-new straight housing slip-on for the Bolt, a slim and trim 3½-inch muffler with a bologna-cut end. It’s got a louvered baffle and a neat little heat shield at the connection between the head pipe and muffler. Naturally, the sound is loud and aggressive to go along with this cool new look. Bassani debuted the new slip-on at an open house recently hosted for the SoCal Bolt Riders Club, one of the many active groups all over the country formed around this V-twin Yamaha. The response, as expected, was overwhelming acceptance. Take a look at this issue’s News section for a report on that gathering, a fun day that included stunt riders, a factory tour, dyno pulls and a taco lunch. The SoCal riders sure liked what they saw, and it’s a safe bet plenty of other Bolt riders will, too. A suggested retail price of just $279.95 will also get their attention. And, don’t forget about all those other custom exhausts Bassani has for the Bolt. That megaphone-style slip-on is still a favorite. The sound is pure Bassani and the pipe’s billet end cap with machined flutes adds style. Bassani’s Radius Sweepers for the Bolt are another popular choice. Short and sweet, these 2-inch pipes have a smooth, flowing look and slash-cut ends that just plain looks cool. Bassani also has its Road Rage 2-into-1 exhausts for the Bolt. These are performance-building pipes that come in two styles – standard and upswept megaphones. ■

Extreme Duty Axles Built for Tough Use

The All Balls Racing 8ball Extreme Duty Axles are built as a tough and durable upgrade over the OEM parts.

design (borrowed from off-road truck racing) in place of the factory-standard six and are assembled with highperformance molybdenum grease that greatly reduces heat and friction during riding.

Let your customers know there’s a fix – All Balls Racing offers brand-new 8ball Extreme Duty axles and they’re available now from Parts Unlimited. These are axle/ CV-joint assemblies built to withstand the harshest conditions, whether it’s racing, sport or everyday work.

Tough neoprene boots, low-profile stainless-steel clamps and a laminate coating for rust and corrosion protection sweeten the deal for any ATV or UTV owner. And, with All Balls Racing there’s no concern about quality. The company’s facilities are certified to meet ISO 9001 quality manufacturing standards; all of its products feature high levels of engineering and design backed up by years of industry knowledge.

All Balls Racing Extreme Duty axles are direct-fit replacements for all the popular machines from Arctic Cat, Can-Am, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, Suzuki, and Yamaha. They come with cages and race sizes that are up to 35 percent larger for greatly increased CV joint strength, and the chromemoly axle shafts are up to 25 percent thicker than OE.

The added strength, reliability and peace of mind that comes from using 8ball Extreme Duty axles from All Balls Racing is something that every ATV and UTV owner should

The 8ball cage and race on the left is significantly larger than the OE parts on the right, using a design that offers greatly increased CV joint strength. They also use eight ball bearings instead of the factory standard six.

Static torsion and fatigue tests comparing the 8ball Extreme Duty axles against OEM conclusively showed the All Balls Racing axles to be far stronger and more durable, reports the company. It’s strength like this that makes these axles a good choice for riders looking for a durability advantage or are simply tired of throwing money at OE axles that continually need to be replaced. The 8ball Extreme Duty axles come fully assembled and ready to install. The CV joints feature an eight-ball-bearing

PROJECT BIKE

V

intage Iron’s Rick Doughty recently celebrated 30 years in business. He has been a Parts Unlimited dealer since he started, and in honor of this milestone, he restored a 1995 Yamaha YZ250 vintage motocross racer using new parts from the Parts Unlimited catalog. We watched Doughty build this great machine and spoke with him to get his views on the future of vintage racing and the business benefits of restoring and marketing vintage motorcycles. Parts Magazine: Tell us about the bike you’re using for the project and why you chose it? Rick Doughty: The ‘95 Yamaha YZ250 was a popular bike back in the day. A good rule of thumb is that top performers when they were new will make the most desirable vintage bikes today. What other machines would be a good fit for this type of project?

Dismantling the bike down to its components allows you to find out what’s broken, salvageable, worn-out or needs replacing.

Vintage Iron has been in business for 30 years and are expert in restoring vintage motocross machines. For this project, Rick Doughty (left) and Todd Davis (right) started with a beat-up 1995 YZ250 and a Parts Unlimited catalog.

Preferably a machine at least 20 years old. If a bike is 20plus years old, there have probably been classes created to bring it into the fold of most vintage racing clubs/ organizations. But choose wisely. It costs just as much to restore a bike that no one wants as it does to restore a bike everyone wants. Again, remember, what was popular then, will be popular now. How can a dealer get into the vintage market with a project like this? It is my hope that all the dealers in the Parts Unlimited network will rethink the value of “old bikes” when they roll into their shop, be it for trade-in or service. We are using a motocross bike for this article, but there is a huge market for vintage street bikes, Enduro bikes and even Trials bikes. There are likely more of those bikes in your area than you realize too. In many cases, current customers of a motorcycle dealer might have some old bikes in their garages that they would be happy to sell. A note on a bulletin board

For a ground-up restoration like this, no bolt is left unturned. That YZ250 got stripped from front to back, and top to bottom.

PROJECT BIKE

Moose Racing has been making hard parts for more than 30 years and is a great source for almost everything you might need to restore a vintage off-road machine.

Parts Unlimited companies like Renthal and Pro Circuit offer race-winning products for new and vintage machines. Vintage Iron wanted to make sure this YZ250 was ready to rip once completed.

would be an easy and cheap way to get the word out that you are looking to buy some vintage bikes, and/or post it on your store’s Facebook page or e-newsletters. Bikes can also be found on Craig’s List and eBay. What products from the Parts Unlimited catalog did you use?

BEFORE AND AFTER

We founded our company about the same time as Moose Racing got started, so for this build we tapped into their ever-growing product line. In addition to UFO plastics, Dunlop tires, Renthal chains and sprockets, Pro Circuit pipes and silencers, and a host of other parts. (See the sidebar for a complete build sheet.) How do you approach a ground-up renovation? When we restore a bike, it comes completely apart so the parts list is extensive front to back. Luckily Moose Racing’s product line is designed to address bikes in the same way, front to back. Wheels, suspension, engine, chassis, controls, driveline and body work.

Vintage restorations are not only a possible profit center for your dealership, they’re also great for returning bikes to the track for the increasingly popular vintage racing series.

How profitable are restorations? That is a loaded question that is fraught with variables like purchase price, condition, level of restoration, etc. My suggestion is to research the market as much as you can so you have a good sense of what bikes are selling for. The key is to not get more money into a restoration than you can get back out of it. Pick a year, make and model that seems to be popular and one that will generate interest in your showroom. Buy the best bike at the best price, not the cheapest. In the long run you will spend less money and hours in the restoration process. Set a budget based on the margin you want to make and then bust out the Parts Unlimited catalog and go to town. Anything else you would like to add? For a dealer these projects are also a great way to keep your service departments busy during slow times of the year. Also, marketing your machine is as important as the restoration. There is eBay, Craigslist and countless vintage forums out there, as well as auctions. Try them all and see what works for your area. This is also a great opportunity to signal to the vintage community that you have “non-current” stock on the shelves, whether it is hard parts or clothing. Yes, the fluorescent pink and green Moto gear that never sold in 1995 is now worth double the original retail! Everything old is new again. ■

Race-Winning Exhausts Two-Stroke Pipes and Silencers

T

wo-strokes are making a comeback, both as new machines and rebuilt vintage and used bikes. Many manufacturers are offering new and updated two-strokes to their line-ups and your customers who are hungry for power can look to Pro Circuit to get enhanced performance. Pro Circuit has offerings for almost any machine including those from Beta, Cobra, Honda, Husaberg, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, TM, and Yamaha. For your customers who are rebuilding vintage 2-strokes, Pro Circuit offers pipes and silencers for select 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s model 2-strokes from Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, and Yamaha. Pro Circuit offers the Works Pipe, Platinum Pipe, Platinum 2 Pipe, R304 Silencer, 304 Silencer and Ti-2 Silencer. Decades of research and development have gone into each exhaust system. Pro Circuit’s wizards have eliminated weak spots by reinforcing mounting brackets and stingers. Each pipe is hand welded and made in the USA with stamped high quality carbon steel construction. These pipes are built to perform and last. The Works Pipe offers enhanced performance and power. The un-plated, oiled metal finish gives your customer’s bike that “works look” just like factory riders had back in the day. Those good looks are complemented by that stamped carbon steel construction with hand welded and pounded seams. This pipe is as good looking as it is powerful. The Platinum Pipe offers the same performance gains as the Works Pipe, but is a better choice for extreme weather conditions. It is constructed of high-quality carbon steel that has received a nickel-plated finish to reduce maintenance and to help protect the pipe against nature’s elements. The Platinum 2 Pipe offers the same performance gains as the popular Works Pipe, and is built from heavy-duty 18-gauge metal that offers increased protection from rock or crash damage. This pipe also utilizes platinum plating on the body to make it tough and durable, making this an ideal pipe for customers who race or ride off-road. Silencers are extremely important to your customers who compete and have to pass sound checks. To get the most out of a Pro Circuit pipe, mate it with a Pro Circuit twostroke silencer.

When it comes to 2-stroke machines, whether they’re vintage or part of the new wave of two-cycle bikes, Pro Circuit has a big range of pipes and silencers built for optimum performance.

The Ti-2 Shorty Carbon Kevlar/Titanium Silencer is constructed with a carbon Kevlar shell, titanium tubing and titanium end-caps. It offers the factory look and appearance, while reducing weight. The Ti-2 is for closedcourse racing only. The R-304 Shorty Silencer was developed as a full-race 2-stroke silencer. The compact design of the short aluminum canister offers optimum performance gains. The 304 Factory Sound Silencer offers a slightly longer brushed aluminum body and stainless steel inlet tube and end-cap which offers added top-end performance while reducing noise output. For off-road riders Pro Circuit offers the Type 296 Spark Arrestor Silencer, and the Nature Friendly Spark Arrestor Silencer, to keep your customers legal. ■

Easier Cleaning, Great Protection

Muc-Off also has a number of chain lubes for servicing motorcycle chains, after the company’s cleaners have stripped away all the dirt and grime.

The Nano Tech Motorcycle Cleaner is biodegradable and is formulated to cut through dirt and grime.

W

e all relish using our motorcycles whenever we can, but to keep them looking and performing at their best, regular cleaning, protecting and lubricating is vital. Muc-Off, with its extensive range of dedicated motorcycle products, aims to make this process as easy as possible! This year marks the U.S. debut of Muc-Off, with the company’s products now available to North American dealers exclusively through Parts Unlimited. Muc-Off was founded in Poole, England, by the late motorcycle racing engineer Rex Trimnell back in 1994. Since then, the company has been producing industry-leading care and maintenance products for anything with wheels, from bicycles to automotive applications. The three-stage approach that Muc-Off takes to maintenance (clean, protect, lube) means that Parts Unlimited will be stocking the full range of products, including the ever-popular Nano Tech Motorcycle Cleaner, Motorcycle Protectant, and Dry Chain Lube. The Nano Tech Motorcycle Cleaner features state-of-theart Nano technology, which is designed to cut through dirt and grime on a microscopic level. The vivid pinkcolored formula is biodegradable, alkaline based and free from acids, CFCs and solvents, meaning it won’t damage a bike’s finish or components, according to the company. Muc-Off’s Biodegradable Chain Cleaner offers powerful cleaning performance. Its water-soluble formula is suitable for O-, X- and Z-ring chains, and quickly removes dirt, lube and chain grime. For the rest of the bike, Muc-Off Biodegradable Degreaser helps clean up other problem areas that get a lot of build-up.

Foam Fresh helps clean helmet liners and other soft riding gear, leaving behind a fresh citrus smell.

CLEANERS & LUBES

Dirty Jobs

Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant should be applied after washing. The high concentration of PTFE (a polymer with non-stick properties) helps prevent dirt adhesion between washes, plus its corrosion inhibitor drives out moisture while laying down a non-sticky protective layer. Motorcycle Protectant can be used all over the motorcycle, including the fairing and engine. The Dry Chain Lube also utilizes PTFE. Its exceptionally low surface friction provides optimal drivetrain efficiency without attracting contaminants. In addition to inhibiting rust and corrosion, the Dry Chain Lube also has the distinction of smelling like fresh bananas! Wet and All-Weather Chain Lube variants are also available. Muc-Off’s commitment to protection and cleaning doesn’t stop at the motorcycle, though. Muc-Off Foam Fresh is an easy-to-use foam cleaner that works to lift dirt and grime away from helmet liners or other soft materials on a rider’s gear. It gets the dirt off and leaves behind a fresh citrus smell. While Muc-Off might be a new name to a lot of North American dealers and riders, the brand is well known throughout Europe. Muc-Off is trusted by professional race teams and riders worldwide, including the PATA Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team, British Superbike team JG Speedfit Kawasaki, FIM Motocross Championship team Dixon Racing, plus freestyle motocross riders such as Adam Jones and Luc Ackermann. The international lineup reflects the global nature of the brand. ■

Protective Parts for RZR Models

Moose Racing’s front bumpers for the Polaris RZR not only provide extra protection against off-road hazards, but also are an attractive upgrade from the stock unit.

U

sually, when someone mentions Moose Racing, off-road motorcycles (and all of the corresponding off-road gear) are the first things that come to mind. But Moose Racing also has a number of UTV and ATV products in the lineup, including parts that protect and enhance the Polaris RZR. Two of the latest RZR parts from Moose Racing are nerf bars and front bumpers. Both the bars and the front bumpers are made from 1¾inch steel tubing to provide outstanding protection from whatever obstacles get in the way, like branches, rocks or even trees that turn out to be closer than expected. The nerf bars and the front bumpers are available in black, blue or red finishes to perfectly match the OEM colors of the RZR. The nerf bars mount quickly and easily to the rocker panels. And while they add a tough-looking design element, they do so without getting in the way – the RZR retains its full stock ground clearance. The nerf bars extend 5 inches horizontally, but they don’t hang below the bottom of the vehicle, which means they protect against obstacles without interfering with handling. The nerf bars protect not only the chassis, but also the rear wheels.

Like the nerf bars, Moose Racing designed the front bumpers for both form and function. They protect against encounters with off-road hazards, while complementing the look of the RZR. Bumper guards are also available, and they can be ordered separately. Moose Racing has a number of other parts that are designed to protect an RZR. A-arm guards are fabricated with 3/16-inch 5052 H-32 aluminum, then given a clear anodized finish to create a lightweight part that provides a sturdy level of fortification. 72

These new nerf bars mount quickly and come in black, blue or red finishes.

The skid plates mount securely using the stock mounts or tough heat-treated chromoly steel clamps. A combination of both mounting choices is an option, as well. No drilling or modifications are required for mounting, and all hardware is included. Moose Racing also has A-arm bearing and seal kits to keep everything running smoothly. Some of the other Moose Racing parts that fit the Polaris RZR include Qualifier brake pads, XCR brake pads and shoes, ball joint kits, wheel spacers, oil filters and batteries. ■

Easy Pull

Upgrade That Mechanical Clutch

With Magura’s Hymec hydraulic clutch system, your customers can experience an easier clutch feel and improved clutch control. It’s a simple upgrade over the stock mechanical setup.

W

hen it comes to performance parts, an upgraded clutch not only helps a motorcycle perform better, but can also help with rider performance.

Just as motocross and off-road racers get less arm-pump with an easy pulling, well-performing clutch, street and Adventure riders also enjoy their ride even more when their clutch is smooth, easy to pull and well adjusted. These are all benefits of Magura’s Hymec clutch system. The Magura Hymec is an easily-installed alternative to a mechanical clutch. This system replaces the clutch lever and cable with a small, lightweight hydraulic system offering improved clutch control. The Hymec system ensures an easier operating pressure – an average of 25 percent less clutch pull – and a constant pressure point. It also means no more cable adjustment, lubrication or replacement. With the Hymec your customers will enjoy improved clutch performance as it allows the user to feel the point where the clutch releases and actuates.

Developed over many years and tested under the toughest conditions, the Hymec is a hydraulic retrofit that offers improvements over standard cable clutch setups. World champion riders who have used the clutch swear by its benefits, benefits that everyday riders, commuters and Adventure bike fans eager to mix things up can also enjoy. Many of your customers can enjoy the perks of a Hymec upgrade, as the system is compatible with off-road, street and motocross motorcycles, as well as several ATV/UTV models. See the Parts Unlimited catalogs for applications. The Magura Hymec hydraulic clutch conversion kit features a pre-mounted, forged breakaway lever with an adjustable reach, and comes filled with non-toxic Magura fluid. It is delivered ready to install with detailed instructions included. The Hymec is precisely tuned and operates on mineral oil, which doesn’t draw moisture and won’t harm paint or finish. It’s maintenance free and automatically compensates for clutch plate wear. ■

oker Machine is a well-known name to motorcycle builders, and a year ago the company branched out into the UTV market. Now, Joker Machine brings its same blend of style, quality and durability to that world with a host of made-in-the USA parts, many of which fit the Polaris RZR1000 and Can-Am Maverick X3. Front and rear sway bar links for both the Maverick X3 and RZR 1000 provide strong reinforcement and greatly improved tolerances over the stock links. Manufactured for maximum strength, as well as good looks, the links are made from a solid block of 6061 billet aluminum, with the rear bars available in black, silver, blue and red anodized finishes. They are equipped with American-made heavy-duty polyurethane bushings that are designed for durability, even in harsh racing conditions. Joker Machine also has an aluminum grab handle designed for the RZR. A claw-style clamp allows it to be mounted at just about any available spot along the frame’s 1¾-inch tubing. It is available in a black anodized finish. RZR riders who need a better view behind them can opt for the R3 or R4 breakaway mirrors, which are designed for high-impact usage. The R3 has a 3¼-inch diameter convex mirror, while the R4 has a 4-inch one. Both options clamp onto 1¾-inch roll cage tubing and can rotate to any position. The 6061 billet aluminum housing is bolstered by cadmium-plated hardware and impact tape backing on the mirror glass so everything stays put. The mirrors are available in both black and clear anodized finishes. While the mirrors are for looking at other things, the Rat Eye LED fender lights shout, “Look at me!” The super bright

Performance Exhausts for New and Old Models

A

s the new model year bikes are arriving at dealerships, know that FMF Racing has already been working hard on new products for those new machines. In fact, FMF has already developed, tested and produced those high performing exhaust products and they are in stock with Parts Unlimited. Let’s start with those hot new exhausts, specifically for the 2018 Honda CRF250R. This is a new model with that exciting twin cam engine and dual exhaust port cylinder. To increase performance and overall ride-ability, FMF offers a choice of complete dual exhaust system, or slip-ons, for this new machine. Of course both feature FMF’s Factory 4.1 RCT anodized blue Titanium mufflers with carbon fiber endcaps. And, don’t forget FMF’s patented Bomb headers. They, like the mufflers, are also duals. There are huge performance gains with FMF’s 4.1 RCT system, a much better look, and less weight. FMF’s dual Factory 4.1 RCT slip-ons also feature the company’s signature anodized blue titanium canister with carbon end caps for the CRF250R. Designed to work with the standard headers – or with FMF headers at a later time to complete the system – these slip-ons are simple to install and are an upgrade to the performance and appearance.

Ready to Ride

Customers buying a 2018 Yamaha RZ65 can opt for FMF Racing’s Factory Fatty front pipe, and a Powercore 2 silencer.

FMF has already produced and shipped product for the 2018 Yamaha YZ65. Choose from the Fatty or Factory Fatty for the front pipe. For the silencer there is a choice of Powercore 2 or the quieter, Turbinecore 2. Your Parts Unlimited rep will be making the rounds with samples of these if they haven’t already.

For your customers who already own one of those popular FMF Factory 4.1 RCT exhausts (any make or model year machine), FMF now offers replacement sticker kits in five different colorways. Not only can your customers color-match their riding gear to their bikes, they can also customize their FMF performance exhaust with stickers to coordinate with their factory colors. Choices are red, blue, yellow, orange, or green. These replacement stickers are of the same high quality material and proper fit of the originals. FMF Racing has a complete dual exhaust system for the 2018 Honda CRF250R, a setup designed specifically for Honda’s new twin cam engine with the dual exhaust port cylinder. Each side also has one of FMF’s power-producing Bomb headers.

These replacement stickers are a quick way for your FMF customers to upgrade and refresh their existing FMF exhaust, and color match to their riding gear or factory colors.

Last, but certainly not least, due to popular demand, and to upgrade the look and performance, there are now Turbinecore 2.1 silencers for the older KTM 250/300 (2004-2010), Honda CR250 (2002-2007), Kawasaki KX250 (2003-2007), and Suzuki RM250 (2003-2008) bikes. These are fully developed, power-producing silencers designed to give riders that extra edge out on the track or trail and, with slightly larger silencer bodies and high quality packing, they also slightly reduce decibels. These exhausts give these older machines a look and style upgrade to match the new ones. ■

lpinestars’ new Adventure Touring products incorporate advanced material technologies and construction methods, ensuring riders can tackle the terrain with confidence and in comfort. The lineup includes the Revenant Gore-Tex Pro jacket and pants, Highland gloves and Campeche Drystar oiled leather boot The Revenant Jacket incorporates an advanced bonded three-layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell construction, which ensures the jacket is lightweight and durable. The Revenant Pant has the same bonded membrane, and both top and bottom feature strategic Gore Armacor reinforcement zones. The latter are engineered to be waterproof and windproof.

The jacket has been designed to offer a close ergonomic fit with or without Tech-Air installed, meaning your customers can buy the jacket and upgrade with Tech-Air at a later date. The Revenant jacket also incorporates CE-certified interior protection on the shoulders and elbows as well as advanced external shoulder protectors. Furthermore the jacket can accommodate the lightweight, CE-certified Nucleon chest and back protection as an accessory upgrade. Alpinestars is also offering the Highlands gloves and the Campeche Drystar oiled leather boots. The Highlands gloves are constructed from durable goat leather with a 3D mesh top surface that provides great airflow and durability.

Revenant jacket

The Revenant jacket and pant feature multiple air-intakes and exhausts for high levels of cooling airflow. Both have extensive stretch paneling for freedom of movement and optimized all-round fit. There are hook-and-loop wrist, waist and lower leg closures, as well as arm and leg volume adjusters for a good fit. The closure systems also have a critical role to play in safety, as they help to ensure the inner protections are secure and stay close to the body in the event of a slide. The Revenant jacket excels in areas of protection thanks to its compatibility with Tech-Air®, Alpinestars’ active airbag system. Developed over more than 15 years of extensive R&D and taking in nearly a million miles of road and track testing, the Tech-Air system is the world’s first and only independent full upper body (chest, shoulders,

Modern 4-strokes While Wiseco has been forging 2-stroke pistons for have largely dominated motocross, while innovative decades, the company set out to make the 2-Stroke Racer progress for 2-strokes has taken a back seat. Elite even stronger. The pistons are forged from 2000 Luckily, Wiseco has created the Racer Elite 2-Stroke Series pistons, manufactured with features outside the status quo of common 2-stroke pistons. In the past, 2-stroke pistons have been ordered in A, B, C piston sizing. Now, provided the bore is within that range, the 2-Stroke Racer Elite piston will drop in and conform to the proper size. The secret is ArmorFit–a proprietary skirt coating that allows the piston to self-adjust to the cylinder. Wiseco R&D has developed ArmorFit in-house. It is a dry film lubricant that not only conforms to the bore size, but remains for the life of the piston, reducing friction and wear.

Enter ArmorPlating, a proprietary surface treatment from Wiseco. Unlike most surface treatments, ArmorPlating is not formed through electrical current, but rather through a chemical reaction. ArmorPlating serves to protect against detonation, improve wear resistance, and creates better sealing in the ring groove. ■

TIRES

Versatile Rubber

A Broad Spectrum of Tires

V

alue, versatility and service are the three themes that have emerged during Kenda’s half-century of tire manufacturing. The brand’s full powersports tire lineup is now available from Parts Unlimited.

Kenda aims to produce great tires at a value price; rubber that lasts a long time and performs well without breaking the bank. And, when it comes to applications, Kenda has a long list that covers street and off-road motorcycles, dualsport bikes, ATVs and UTVs. That versatility makes Kenda a simple choice for dealers, as does the company’s focus on customer service. Kenda has a big presence in off-road racing in both ATV and motorcycle categories, with a list of GNCC and National Enduro championships. The company got its start in bicycle tires, but today Kenda manufactures tires for everything from automotive applications to wheelchairs. That versatility can be found in Kenda’s dual-sport options. The K270 Dual-Sport tube-type tire is ideal for replacing the OE trail tire, and it comes in 15 popular sizes.

Kenda’s Big Block tires offer superior handling in everything from dirt and mud, to sand and pavement.

Meanwhile, the Big Block K784 tires have powerful puncture resistance and a tubeless design. The tread pattern has large blocks to give superior handling across a variety of terrains, like pavement, sand, dirt and mud. Adventure riders who prefer the pavement can opt for Kenda’s Big Block Paver K678 tires. The front tread pattern helps minimize the scalloping effect common on heavier dual sport bikes, while the rear tread is designed for high mileage and highway traction. ■

ime is money. You know it and so does anyone running a motorcycle service business. The MC900 Deluxe Tire Machine can help cut down on the time and effort it takes to do tire changes. K&L Supply also has the MC205 Wheel Balancer to complete the job.

Having the right equipment isn’t an option. To do quick, quality work it’s mandatory, and for years K&L Supply Company, Inc. has been a source when it comes to serious shop equipment. K&L’s MC900 Deluxe Tire Machine with Power Assist Arm and the MC205 Wheel Balancer, two shop essentials, are proof of that. Designed as a solid solution for handling the toughest motorcycle, automobile, ATV, UTV and trailer tire changes, the MC900 cuts service time way down, the company says. It’ll allow more tire changes with less effort, and in less time. The MC900 can handle almost any wheel up to a 44-inch diameter and, with its optional Leverless Tower, it eliminates the need for old-style tire tools that can mar a wheel’s surface. It’s available in red or blue.

Dual Sport and Enduro Bags

elson-Rigg’s line of Rigg Gear adventure-touring bags has expanded. They’ve added lightweight and rugged dual-sport saddlebags, front and rear fender bags and a matching tank bag.

The Trails End tank bag has a low-profile 12-liter design that expands to 16.5 liters. The water-resistant 1680D UltraMax polyester chassis comes with a rain cover that fits both sizes. Quick-release buckles and soft ties make mounting easy, while up top a clear lens lets you operate touch-screen devices stored inside. The RG-030 front fender bag and RG-025R rear fender bags have a design and mounting system to fit almost every dual sport and enduro model. The 11-inch x 7-inch x 1-inch front bag is ideal for items like a tire iron and spare tube. A rubberized base and extra straps that tie around the fork tubes prevent sliding. The 3-liter rear bag, which measures 11 inch x 6 inch x 3 inch, has a brightly colored lining and a clear zippered pocket to make finding things easy. Additional accessories can be attached to the M.O.L.L.E.

The RG-020 dual sport saddlebags also fit most adventure and enduro models, and extra straps are included to mount them to sportbikes and cruisers, too. The 1680 Tri-Max material is backed with anti-slip/scratch material, and the main compartment expands from 12 to 15 liters. There is a bonus external pocket under each bag to hold small items, such as a tool roll or spare tube. ■

DIY Maintenance Essential Everyday Tools

Motion Pro’s lineup of tools like its T-Handle wrench lineup and chain breakers are a perfect addition to any DIY mechanic’s home workshop.

T-Handle wrenches, for instance. There are spinner versions, ball-end hex wrenches, there are T-Handle socket drivers, T-Handle bit drivers, even Y-drivers and more. Every one is extremely handy, and in the right situation, indispensable.

W

The same can be said for the wide selection of Motion Pro tire-service tools. A Pro Fill air-chuck gauge, for example, is something every rider needs. And for routine chain maintenance there are tools like the Motion Pro SlackSetter, master-link clip pliers, and all the chain breaker/press/riveting tools. You can add tire irons and spoke wrenches to the display, too.

More and more of today’s riders are tackling their own maintenance and repairs, and Motion Pro has the tools it takes to get those jobs done right. And it all starts with the basics, the kind of tools with wide appeal. Make sure your DIY customers see them all. Motion Pro’s slat- wall Point Of Purchase Display will put it all right out there for them to see.

All this is just the start, the kind of tools that belong in every rider’s toolbox. These are tools to keep in stock, on hand and on display. ■

hether their passion is street riding or dirt racing, they’re track-day enthusiasts or just have an ATV/UTV that gets a workout around the farm, ranch or factory; all those customers have one thing in common – the need for a toolbox or pouch stocked with the essentials.

hen it comes to many of the teams and riders running in the upcoming ATV/UTV/ off-road racing season, DP Brakes’ product line comes high on the list.

“Once again,” says Larry Mills, president of DP Brakes and Clutches North America, “we’re proud to be sponsoring an impressive lineup of high-profile teams and riders for the upcoming ATV/UTV/off-road racing season.” He has good reason to be proud. The list of teams and riders running with DP sponsorship for 2018 is indeed impressive. For ATV MX Pro/Pro-Am, it’s Team Hetrick Racing’s No. 1 Plate holder Joel Hetrick again using DP. Along with him are the top chargers from Team Baldwin Motorsport, Root River Racing, Team JB Racing and Janssen Racing. ATV and UTV GNCC? It’s No. 1 Plate ATV Pro Walker Fowler and No. 1 Plate UTV Pro Cody Miller with DP. Heading down the roster from there, it’s DP all the way, in Pro and Pro/Am XC-1 and XC-2, in 4X4 Pro, in the women’s classes, the senior classes, the Masters, you name it. It’s the same

in Arenacross, Enduro, Endurocross and National Hare Scrambles. Many of the top riders and teams, once again, have chosen DP Brakes. There’s a reason for this. Not only do those DP pads perform flawlessly in all conditions, they’re non-abusive to the rotors, they’re clean, they’re quiet and are up to three times longer lasting than OE.
