his issue features coverage of one of our mustdo events in the Parts Unlimited world every year, the North American NVP Expo in Madison, WI. Hopefully, that’s true with you too. For us, the event in August was actually two events in one, starting with a couple of days of sales rep training, followed by a fullon Product Expo for dealers. Please enjoy our 12-page report on this year’s event, starting on page 20. We enjoyed seeing much optimism with the attendees this year when it came to the products that dealers were checking out and ordering. While overall vehicle sales reports show the industry to be level with recent years, many dealers have figured out how to do better than just staying even. Side-by-sides continue to be a big part of the sales and profits for dealers, as well as adventure bikes and some of the specialty street brands. Those same categories are reflected in aftermarket product sales. It won’t be long now until the snow flies in many parts of the country. To get you ready, our annual Snowmobile Market Report is featured in its own section in this issue, beginning on page 34. Snowmobiles used to all be pretty similar, with different size motors. In recent years, they have become much more diverse with conventional sleds, plus the conversion kits for motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs. Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties got on board as a sponsor of the Indian factory team this year in the AFT series, and we were excited and proud to see Briar Bauman recently clinch the AFT Twins championship for 2019. Lastly, people talk a lot about getting young people interested in motorcycling. Be sure to read the story written by “one of them,” a young man named Luke Colombero who shared his experience of getting himself and a few friends to give motorcycling a try. With so many alternatives like Facetime on a cell phone, or Uber for those that want to go somewhere, Luke’s generation is going to need some encouragement to make motorcycling their “thing.” Here is where it starts. ■

LeMans Corporation used the show in late August to announce that the dealer sites for Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited will see large-scale improvements through the introduction of an industry-first eCommerce-like shopping experience. Some features of the new sites include more detailed product information than ever before, multiple, zoomable images and product videos, and faster order creation and processing. Dealers attending the NVP were given exclusive early access to the new sites, which will be available at https://dealer.parts-unlimited.com/ and https://dealer.dragspecialties.com/ after their upcoming full launch. The next opportunity for dealers to begin using the new sites will be at the AIMExpo in Columbus, OH in September.

DEALERS PREVIEW HOT NEW SELLERS, PROGRAMS FOR 2020
MADISON, WI • AUG. 24-25 Photos by Don Emde, Dennis Johnson and Todd Olson
W
hile the fall Parts Unlimited NVP always comes around buzzing with excitement over the huge lineup of hot new products, lucrative show programs and the promise of future sales, this year’s preview of the coming season was absolutely crackling with energy. You see, for the first time ever, Parts Unlimited, Drag Specialties and Parts Canada teamed up to present the 2019 North American NVP Expo and the end results smashed all expectations. Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties saw their largest Madison-based expo ever with a 25 percent increase in dealer attendance, while the addition of Canadian dealers pumped those numbers up to an overall increase in dealer attendance of 38 percent. A year ago, LeMans Corporation’s Vice president of Sales and Marketing Jeff Derge used the phrase, “Spring starts today,” to describe the Expo. This year proved that dealers were primed to jump in on the action and get a leg up on the competition by getting detailed information about new products and sales programs for when the 2020 season officially kicks off. “The first ever North American NVP exceeded everyone’s expectations,” Derge said. “Thank you to all the dealers, the vendors, the Parts Unlimited / Drag Specialties Sales Team and Parts Canada for all their efforts!” The collaborative Expo allowed vendors, dealers and sales reps from across the continent – and from two different countries – to gather for two days of intensive product education, dealer training sessions and invaluable face-to-face socializing. They got a hands-on first look at everything from riding jackets, exhaust and brake supplies to audio equipment, helmets, touring luggage, and much more. “When the three companies decided to combine for the first ever North American NVP, we knew it would be successful as Parts Unlimited wrote the book on how to do a vendor Expo,” said James Danyluk, President of Parts Canada. “As the Expo unfolded, the massive scale of the success came clearly into view. “Every dealer, supplier and staff member had nothing but positive comments on the Expo, and the common theme was that they all would be back for the next one. Thank you to the staff of all three companies and to the exhibitors for a job well done!”

Highlights of the weekend included a dealer-packed Expo floor both days and a number of new vendors in attendance. Parts Canada kicked off its booking program while Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties introduced a new drop ship program.
Of course no NVP is official without the now legendary Saturday evening’s Meet & Greet/Bike Show. The event is always a favorite among showgoers who appreciate the chance to kick back, enjoy refreshments and the company of friends, and check out a bevy of custom bikes brought by dealers and vendors alike.
Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties also announced the launch of two new dealer websites that provide an industryfirst, an eCommerce-like shopping experience. Attending dealers got to experience it first-hand and the sites continued to roll out to more dealers in the weeks following the show. For the sixth year running, the Michelin Power Jam rocked Madison’s Majestic Theater as the talented musicians among the LeMans staff, Parts and Drag rep force, and vendor lineup delivered a night of great music. One new event was the Mini-Bike Roundup presented by Icon. For this epic night, Icon gave mini-bikes to Biltwell, LA Choppers, Performance Machine, the Speed Merchant, and S&S Cycle to modify, and then compete in a series of crowd-pleasing challenges. The hijinks likely made a lasting impression on the people in downtown Madison that night.

“The excitement and momentum from this successful Expo will be buzzing for a long time,” said Mike Collins, CEO of LeMans Corporation. “It shows what we can do when our companies work together. The release of the new products and incentives/programs by the vendors for the sales force and dealers are sure to bring a great Fall season. Look for more of this in the future.” With 2020 clearly on the horizon, Parts Unlimited dealers and vendors now have their sights set on the Spring NVP Product Expo as it returns Louisville, KY at the KICC Convention Center.

2020 Snowmobile Market Report
H OT T R E N D S F O R T H E C O O L S E A S O N

f you were to describe the 2020 snowmobile market in four words, you’d likely say, “Things are looking up.”Snowmobile sales are picking up again, with numbers from the International Snowmobile Manufacturer’s Association (ISMA) reported by Snow Goer magazine showing an overall gain of 6.6 percent for model year 2019. Last season’s biggest growth was overseas, but North American unit sales did show a modest gain, following up on a 6 percent North American unit sales increase in 2018. And maybe more importantly, Powersports Business magazine reports that Jeremy Jansen, president of Motorsports for Wells Fargo Commercial Distribution Finance, recently said “The last two or three months of the snow season were successful with heavy, late season snow in key markets. Snowmobile inventory levels are the lowest we have seen in years.” What these numbers don’t show is that the North American snowmobiler is steadily becoming a more affluent customer. With snowmobile prices and costs of participating in the sport increasing, the entire nature of the market has changed radically.
The 2019/2020 Winter Season is approaching fast and Parts Unlimited has everything your customers need for recreation and work when the snow starts falling.

Be careful not to pigeon-hole snowmobilers as strictly price buyers. There are products and categories, like youth sleds and accessories, certain types of apparel and helmets, and anything for beginners that do remain very price sensitive, but your big-mile touring customers, your hard-core high-performance enthusiasts, and your serious racers are usually looking for product performance, not price, and are usually willing to pay whatever it takes to get the right stuff.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Many committed snow riders own and wear multiple snowmobile suits for the sometimes drastically differing conditions of very diverse riding areas. Outer wear that is well-suited for high-energy mountain riding and snow biking won’t work well in the seriously sub-zero cold of northern Canada.
2020 HOT TRENDS
Apparel Advances
Whether your customers are involved in touring or high-energy mountain riding, Parts Unlimited has apparel choices that will keep them warm, dry and comfortable.
Likewise, the extreme warmth gear needed for high-speed touring on the northern edge of the North American trail system is simply too heavy and clumsy for the Rocky Mountain high-marking. And sometimes riders just want a good quality, but attractively priced suit for local riding with their family or club group. Successful dealers need to stock apparel for their riders who travel elsewhere to roll up their serious miles, so knowing where and when your customers and prospects ride is an absolute must before pre-season stocking orders are placed and before advising these riders on apparel and other gear choices whenever they are in a buying mood. One current trend in snowmobile suits is more real choices. The one-piece suit is back for young mountain riders seeking maximum freedom of movement and low price. And Arctiva offers up some great fitting bib pants such as their unique length-adjustable bibs, as well as new short inseam models of their popular Pivot 2 and new Pivot 3 bibs as alternatives to standard length bibs that are still available. Keeping feet warm and dry is another snow rider imperative, and it has to be done with real-world usability in mind. So, as snowmobile boot engineering continues to evolve, we see a trend to easier-to-wear designs that facilitate foot motion and placement on the sled as well as easier walkability off the snow machine. This is equally important for the mountain rider who often stands on one side of the sled or even on a ski to maneuver, for the touring rider who will be off their sled frequently enjoying scenic sights and trailside pit stops, and even for parents who are helping their child participate in the local Sunday afternoon club ride. The new Arctiva Advance boot is a great example of this latest generation of snow stompers because it is engineered with both excellent warmth and a rider’s movements in mind. Hand protection continues to advance, too. Many who ride in very cold northern conditions, or who simply have problems keeping their hands warm, are now using handlebar gauntlets and wearing very light weight gloves underneath them. New gauntlet choices include some with much larger and sometimes much more easily adjustable hand openings, and even some with see-through top windows so a rider can see the controls underneath.
Helmet Evolution Continues The helmet market continues to provide more and more truly different choices for different kinds of snow riders. Mega-mile touring riders increasingly seek helmets that provide more warmth, larger fields of vision, and more conveniences like swing-up chin bars and drop-down internal sun shades, making the modular helmet with an electric face shield an increasingly popular choice. The new Z1R Solaris Modular Snow Electric fills this need perfectly. Younger trail riders who want the sno-cross racer look, but with the warmth and greater field-of-vision of a flip-up face shield are interested in the emerging dual-sport style of winter helmets. And now some of these are available with the swing-up chin bar of a modular helmet. And of course, some riders continue to prefer the more traditional full face or off-road styles which are usually less expensive. The new Z1R Rise Ascend off-road helmet is a good example of a contemporary helmet that works well for active snowmobilers, particularly mountain and snow bike riders. There are also options from AFX, Arctiva, Moose Racing and Z1R. Check out the 2020 Parts Unlimited Snow catalog for all the details.

often part of restorations, so pistons, rings, and gaskets are other frequent needs.
The vintage snowmobile market is one of the biggest trends in snow sports. In addition to refurbishing and restoring those classic sleds, many enthusiasts also own contemporary snowmobiles. There’s plenty to see in the 2020 Parts Unlimited Snow catalog to help them out no matter what they’re riding. Photo courtesy of David Wells
Parts Unlimited also offers many specific parts that can be useful in restoring an old snowmobile. For instance, complete Comet 94-C (Duster), 102-C, and 108-series drive clutches were original equipment on many classic sleds including John Deere, Arctic Cat, Scorpion and Yamaha applications. These clutches are available from the Parts Snow catalog, along with many clutch tuning parts from Straightline Performance and others. A variety of Saddleskins replacement sled seat covers from Saddlemen can solve one of the most frequent problems with restoring old sleds. Snow flaps are frequently trashed or missing from old sleds, but Parts can supply a wide variety of flaps from Skinz and Kimpex to take care of this problem.
Resurrections Offer Sales Opportunities Vintage snowmobiling continues as one of the very hottest trends in the sport. More and more riders are being bitten by the vintage bug, and are now trying to recapture their past by restoring, exhibiting, riding and even racing classic sleds, particularly the machines from the fabulous leaf spring era. Dealers should also note that many, if not most vintage snowmobile enthusiasts also own contemporary snow machines, often multiple newer units and often of different brands than what they are restoring. That makes these highly committed snow riders very viable prospects for all of today’s parts, garments and accessories. Catering to this growing restoration market can help attract new customers for contemporary equipment to your show room. Beyond the required consumables, wear items, and apparel, Parts Unlimited dealers can benefit from offering specific products to help restore and operate these older machines. For instance, many small service parts like nuts and bolts, rivets, windshield fasteners, hood latches, grips, starter rope, Mikuni VM-series carb jets, exhaust springs, levers and cables, and even some tail light lenses have changed little, if at all, over the years. So make sure you have a good stock of these basic items on hand. Also note that many of the restorations for racing or trail riding are being done as resto-mods with a blend of old and new technologies. This means that items like coil-spring suspension components, plastic skis and their accessories, idler wheels, electrical components, and drive clutches are being used to update and improve performance on these resto-mods. Engine rebuilds are

Another problem is stripping old stickers and registration decals, and that can be solved easily with Sticker Off! from Hardline Products, also available from Parts Unlimited. And, octane boosters from Klotz, PJ1 and Maxima can help with those old high-compression engines that were engineered to run on premium leaded gasoline. Showing and promoting these products can lead to sales that would otherwise be lost to other sources. And if you are lucky enough to have any appreciable amount of new old stock (NOS) snowmobile parts stashed away somewhere, you can turn them into serious dollars by advertising them to sled restorers. The 2019-2020 snow season will soon be underway and your customers will be asking about all the products and apparel that make it tick, whether for work, recreation or both. Parts Unlimited and your Parts sales rep can help you find exactly what’s needed. ■

SNOW PLOWS

Plows for ATVs and UTVs
I
t’s been a hot summer, so maybe you’re ready for some cold winter weather and thick jackets. Or maybe you prefer the flip-flops and shorts lifestyle, and you count the days until spring comes around again. Either way, if snow is no stranger to your part of the country, then your customers are going to need snow plows. Moose Utility Division already has a range of plow options, but the company has added two new products to give ATV and UTV owners even more snow-moving choices. The RM-5 rapid-mount plow system and the V-Plow feature the same quality, durability and ease of use featured in Moose Utility Division’s other plowing parts. And, like the company’s current plow line-up, the new parts carry on the tradition of being made in the USA.
The V-plow from Moose Utility Division is designed for larger ATVs and UTVs, and is available in 72-inch and 82-inch sizes.
The RM-5 is for ATV and UTV owners who want to get their plowing done without wasting any time. The easy pull-pin system makes quick work of getting the plow on and off. The triangulated push tube, shaped for maximum strength and stability, is made from heavy-duty 2-inch square steel tubing. The front-mount design has 30 inches of lift, and it is compatible with all of Moose Utility Division’s straight or county blades. The V-Plow is made especially for larger vehicles, and it is recommended for ATVs and UTVs of 700cc and up. Moose Utility Division designed the V-Plow to be both efficient and versatile. The V-blades are available in two sizes, 72 inches or 82 inches. For each size, the blade heights taper up from the center of the blade, which increases plow capacity. The V-plow comes standard with a manual adjust system, and there are many possible plowing positions so a customer can get just the right setup for the job. There is also an optional hydraulic turn kit, an upgrade that makes blade angle adjustments effortless. Each V-plow includes rubber flaps and a strong matte powder coat finish for maximum durability. Moose Utility Division has a handy chart you can get from your Parts Unlimited rep that makes ordering a complete RM-5 plow kit or a full V-Plow setup easy. Each step is detailed, along with application charts for the required parts. ■

hances are some of your customers taking a fresh look at their snowmobiles right now aren’t thrilled at what they’re finding. If that machine starts at all after its long, offseason hibernation it might be spitting, stumbling and quickly stalling out. Most likely all of that can be traced to a faulty, gummed-up carburetor, especially if that machine had been stored away with fuel still in the float bowl. Bottom line – it’s probably time for a carburetor rebuild and Parts Unlimited has the solution for completing that required service operation at a cost much lower than buying the OEM components individually. Full repair/rebuild kits are available for all the popular models, too. The Parts Unlimited Snow catalog has six full pages listing applications for machines from Arctic Cats, Polaris, SkiDoo and Yamahas, and every kit comes with everything needed to put those carburetors back into tip-top shape and have that snowmobile humming like a champ. SNOWMOBILE SKIS
True Precision
Super-Tunable Snowmobile Skis
F
amous USI snowmobile skis are back at Parts Unlimited! And, they return with the brand new super-tunable Epic plastic skis that allow riders to refine sled handling with high levels of precision.
USI has produced high quality snowmobile skis ever since founder and avid snow rider Kevin Metheny introduced the first aftermarket plastic sled ski way back in January, 1989. Many years of ski development, including testing on the track by many top racers has led to constantly improved USI plastic ski designs that reduced weight, improved handling, and eliminated rusting among other benefits. The Epic 1.0 and 1.5 plastic skis are the newest members of the USI family. Engineered for maximum adjustability and aggressive handling with light steering effort, Epic skis retain USI’s familiar solid aluminum ski saddle that prevents darting by eliminating ski side flex. The saddle also provides long ski life by ensuring a supremely stable and durable interface with the sled’s spindles. The aluminum mount on the Epic skis is adjustable in two planes, allowing the ski stance to be widened or narrowed by 1¾ inches from the center position, and lengthening or shortening the fore-and-aft ski reach by 1 inch from center. These adjustments permit a customer to personalize and fine tune sled balance for great possible handling with any snowmobile. A wide 8¼-inch leading tip gets the ski up on plane quickly and keeps it up on top of the snow while combining with the broader-than-average 7¼-inch wide main body to provide excellent floatation that yields a stable platform for any snow conditions. The short-length center keel of 1-inch (Epic 1.0) or 1.5-inch (Epic 1.5) depth combines with angled cut rear corners and raised tail for positive but light steering effort, while the outer edge keels and centered rear mini-keel help straight line tracking. Traction nubs on the upper edges add a no-slip platform for ski-stand maneuvering. ■

NEW PROGRAM AIMS TO GET MORE TEENS ON MOTORCYCLES By Lu ke Col omb ero / P ho to s by Jo e Co lo m b e ro
Author Luke Colombero (center photo, facing camera) invited a group of friends to take their first motorcycle training class as part of the new video/social media outreach program from the MSF and MIC.
I RIDER TRAINING
’ve found in my 17 years of life that I have become overly reliant on screen-based technology, and I think most teenagers like me would say the same thing. We watch videos on our phones, play video games and live our lives on social media instead of going outside and having real adventures and thrilling experiences – like riding motorcycles.
50
The question the industry has been asking for several years now is, “How can we get the youth of this generation to go out and ride motorcycles with their friends and perhaps purchase some two-wheeled beauties themselves?” The answer is not simple, but perhaps part of the answer is to bring the fun and adventure to social media by making videos that kids could easily share with each other. I don’t mean the type of video showcasing stuntmen pulling off long wheelies or jumping things on a moped. Those could scare away parents and timid kids. I mean entertaining, fun and educational programs that show new riders getting their start with motorcycling, and having a great time learning to ride for the first time.

Thankfully, this type of video exists. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC), and www.motorcycles.org have started a program that showcases young riders learning the ropes of riding in a fun manner. I had the pleasure of hosting the first episode of this exciting project. I gathered six friends (three boys and three girls) from my high school – most of whom had never ridden a motorcycle before – and out went to the Honda Rider Education Center in Colton, CA to make the video with two outstanding coaches: Andria Yu, and Ty van Hooydonk from the MSF. The coaches were patient, encouraging and upbeat while the beginners had their first taste of the adventure of riding. Just putting on the gear for the first time was a thrill, and the trail ride at the end of the day was exciting enough to likely make them life-long riders. The best part of it all? The entire event was caught on video, from suiting up in riding gear in the beginning to the end, where the whole group got to put into action all the skills they learned throughout the day. After a long day of riding, filming and coaching, I got the chance to talk with Ty about this interesting project to see

how it can help motorcycles dealers attract new customers and create a safe environment for new riders. Luke Colombero: How can this project help dealers? Ty van Hooydonk: Videos showing youth and families enjoying the MSF DirtBike School can be shared with customers, showing them how to best get started in offroad riding; the safe way with a MSF-trained and certified coach. These videos can easily answer that basic question coming from a potential customer: How do we get started? And market growth from off-highway enthusiasts can also lead to future street riders. Just think how many of today’s street riders began in the dirt? What can dealers do to make use of this program? Find out where local DirtBike School providers are and send their customers there. They could even create customer events based around local DirtBike Schools. For example, they could:
• Lead a group of customers through their first DirtBike School • Have a contest for customers, where the winners get a free DirtBike School training session. • Assist DirtBike School training sites with bikes and service. • Start their own DirtBike School training site. • Sponsor future DirtBike School coaches to go through the MSF prep needed to become one. • Find out where local DirtBike School providers are, partner with them by providing training motorcycles through the MSF Loan Program, and send their customers there. Where can dealers and potential customers view this content and learn more about the program? The videos will go up at www.motorcycles.org and https://dirtbikeschool.org, and on our YouTube channels.
Following a day of training, all of those who participated said they wanted to get more advanced training.
To learn more about the program and getting involved, contact the MSF DirtBike School by sending an email with your questions to msf@msf-usa.org. What are you hoping to accomplish, and what would be an ideal result of this program? We want to see more young riders and families enjoying off-road motorcycles in a safe and responsible manner. That starts with all the training you get at DirtBike School. You learn much more than basic motorcycle operation. You learn about making good choices as a rider. You learn about riding gear, taking care of our trails and the riding environment, as well as taking care of a motorcycle, all in a one-day session. DirtBike School is one of the very best ways to begin motorcycling and we hope these fresh new videos help to increase awareness and generate more students. Hopefully, this ambitious and fun project can help create a foundation for a new wave of eager young riders throughout the United States. Promoting DirtBike School to a young audience could attract potential riders into their local motorcycle dealership where they might become long-time customers. As for the six friends that I invited to the MSF Dirt Bike School, all of them are planning to come back for more advanced coaching and want to take part in organized trail rides, and two want to race. Five of them hope to keep riding and plan to go to MSF training for street riding to get their street motorcycle licenses. Even more importantly, three of them are planning to buy motorcycles within a year. Imagine those kinds of percentages on a national scale. ■

Off-Road Audio Upgrade High-Quality Speakers and Amps

ICKER knows how to make music sound good in the great outdoors and build products that can withstand the elements year in and year out. That know-how makes KICKER products a great choice for your customers’ motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, boats and other recreational vehicles. Parts Unlimited now carries a range of those products. When it comes to designing and building a sound system that will operate in windy, wet, or dusty conditions, you need to know what you’re doing. Luckily, KICKER has nearly 50 years of audio-engineering experience to draw on, experience that includes studio, automotive, marine, and personal equipment. production of its many products, which ranges from amplifiers to enclosures and subwoofers to mini speakers. Speakers are the heart of any sound system, whether they’re in the fairing of a touring bike or bolted to a wakeboard tower on a boat. “You can’t just take a car audio speaker and re-label it as a marine or powersport product,” says Lori Boyer, KICKER’s Southeast regional sales manager. “Each market has specific conditions that It takes a special sound system to survive a blizzard. This custom Sno Cat was designed for a ski resort and serves as a mobile sound system for outdoor events and competitions.
KICKER founder Steve Irby got his start in a one-car garage, building audio equipment for his band. Irby came from a family of tinkerers, and as a keyboard player he wanted better sound equipment to make his music shine. Rather than spend $300 on a new amplifier, Steve and his father hit the library and learned how to build their own. And it sounded great. Irby’s amplifier, speaker and housing hobby has grown into a dynamic business with approximately 200 employees and a worldwide network of dealers. Although Irby’s company is still based in his hometown of Stillwater, OK, he’s left the garage behind in favor of an impressive 280,000 square-foot facility. As an example, a standard automotive speaker would quickly deteriorate in the presence of rain or water, so KICKER builds its PS coaxial outdoor speakers to handle all manner of moisture. The speaker basket and cone are formed using weather-resistant polymers and the sound units use a waterproof suspension system that fully encapsulates and seals the voice coil. Reducing weight is always a good idea on any vehicle, so KICKER utilizes neodymium magnets that offer exceptional power handling with reduced weight.

have to be designed around, and all our outdoor products are engineered to handle extreme conditions.” KICKER considers the environments that its products will be used in and then accounts for those factors, whether they’re high levels of wind noise or constant exposure to moisture.
Parts Unlimited is now carrying a wide range of speakers, speaker holders and subwoofers from KICKER’s extensive lineup.
KICKER speakers that are classified as “Marine” undergo even greater development and testing, some of which is surprisingly downhome. Marine speakers have UVtreated weatherproof baskets and are tested in freshwater, saltwater and fog to meet or exceed the ASTM standards for marine durability. To verify the toughness of their products, KICKER puts items on the roof of its building for close to six months. This long-term exposure to Oklahoma’s brutal sun, rain and snow help KICKER engineers verify color retention and overall durability, and it’s an excellent example of KICKER’s commitment to developing high-quality products for customers. Feeding power to speakers is also uniquely challenging on boats, bikes and other outdoor vehicles. KICKER’s PXA powersports amplifiers are especially suited to tough conditions. These compact units are optimized for outdoor use and vehicle versatility. All internal circuitry is conformal coated, protecting it from moisture and condensation. Additionally, all hardware is stainless steel to resist corrosion, and electrical connections are made via a single encapsulated Molex plug. Size is always an issue on recreational vehicles, so KICKER’s PXA amps are designed with a small footprint and low current draw to help reduce the load on the charging system. Whatever your customers’ needs are – from a simple speaker upgrade to a full UTV sound system – KICKER has the audio equipment they need. And, you can feel good offering your customers KICKER products knowing that each item has been carefully and relentlessly tested and developed for excellent performance and durability. ■

HELMETS
Best of Both Worlds Versatile Modular Helmet
I
t’s not uncommon to see customers wandering the helmet aisles looking a little perplexed. There are a lot of decisions to be made when it comes to selecting one of the most important pieces of protective equipment – color, size, features, and whether or not to go with an open-face helmet or a full-face helmet. All this needs to be determined before someone is ready to head to the register and check out. For those customers struggling with the choice between an open-face helmet and a full-face lid, a modular helmet often settles that dilemma, and AFX’s FX-111 is a great choice. It’s feature-packed and affordably priced, and gives riders the option of feeling the breeze on their cheeks or riding around fully enclosed. The key to the FX-111’s convenience and adaptability is its hinged chinbar, which pivots up and out of the way to permit riders to speak freely, take a sip of a drink or wolf down a snack between stretches on the road. The FX-111’s cammed hinge, central latch button and latch linkage ensure easy one-handed use and excellent security when closed. Safety certifications include DOT and ECE approval. Adding to the FX-111’s versatility are a raft of excellent features. An integrated drop-down sun visor eliminates the need for sunglasses, is always at the ready, and is easily operated with a gloved hand via the large slide mechanism on the left side of the helmet. If your customers would like to listen to music or take phone calls while riding, the FX-111 is well equipped to accept a Bluetooth communicator thanks to integrated speaker pockets.
The FX111 from AFX is a feature-rich modular helmet that includes an integrated drop-down sun visor.
Flipping the FX-111’s chin bar up is a great way to get some extra air, but when the chin bar is down four vents help move air through the helmet to keep things cool. A streamlined shell flows through the air smoothly, aided by a flush, side-coverless face shield that is optically correct and scratch resistant. The helmet’s interior liner is removable and washable, and to fine tune the FX-111’s fit customers can opt for different thickness cheek pads and central liners. Making this helmet even easier to use is a quick-release buckle on the chin strap. Offered in several universally appealing graphics packages, this helmet is sure to appeal to a broad audience. So whether your customer is on a cruiser or a sport-tourer, the FX-111 modular from AFX is a practical, versatile option. ■

Rivet Right
Versatile New Chain Tool
RK Chain’s UCT2100(50) chain tool can not only rivet its range of drive chains, it can also rivet other chain brands’ rivets as long as the pins feature flare type rivet pins.
T
here are two different types of motorcycle chain connecting links – the rivet-type link and the clip-type link. Nearly all of RK Chains designed for streetbikes come with a rivet type connecting link.
RK Chain’s rivet pins feature a special process on the tips of the pins that need to be flared with a rivet tool in order to secure the sideplate in place. The company’s own UCT2100(50) chain tool can not only rivet its range of drive chains, it can also rivet other chain brands’ rivets as long as the pins feature flare type rivet pins. Most motocross/Supercross chains come with a clip-type link, which is where the connecting link pins feature two channels that allow a spring clip to slide into the channels and secure the sideplate. Whenever possible, RK recommends using a rivet-type link to connect the chain as this type of link results in a more secure connection. While offering a more secure connection, rivet-type connecting links do require the use of a special riveting chain tool. Once again, that trusty chain breaker/press-fit and riveter combo, the UCT2100(50), can tackle the job. The UCT2100(50) quickly and easily breaks 40 and 50 series chains, and can press-fit tight tolerance 40 and 50 Sealed chain sideplates to the correct depth for clip or rivet installation. Dealers should note that the 40 series chains

require the use of RK’s tool pieces FP428JP and PH428 to press-fit and rivet. Those tool pieces are sold separately. One of the newest improvements for the UCT2100(50) chain tool is the redesigned Flare Pin FP500JP. The new flare pin features grooves that prevent the user from over-flaring the rivet pins. The new sealed posts allow the components to lock into the tool body and larger pressure bolt for easier use without dropped components. The redesigned plate holder PH500JP for 50 series chains features a reversible post that allows the tool to be used to switch between the clip-type or rivet-type plate holder. The tools and accessory pieces feature a lifetime warranty on the material and craftsmanship for the tool body. Replacement components are readily available. The main chain breaker/press-fit tool – the UCT2100(50) – comes in a molded plastic storage case. RK recommends that all chains be installed by a trained mechanic. Misuse and/or improper installation could damage the chain and void the chain warranty. If your service techs are new to the RK Chain tool UCT2100(50), the company provides a video on how to use the tool. Visit the company’s website for further details. ■

DRIVE BELTS
Tougher, Better, Stronger New and Improved Drive Belt
features the highest shock load rating of all Trinity belts to date, which means it is designed to handle machines of up to 400 horsepower. On top of all that, it also uses a high modulous rubber compound (BZX1), which is a type of rubber that is tested to extreme standards, far beyond normal vehicle operation. This compound outlasts OEM drive belts by a substantial margin. The best part about this new rubber compound is that it allows for better heat resistance and heat dissipation. When comparing the World’s Best Belt to any other belt, it is apparent that the materials are very different, even the look and feel.
The new World’s Best Belt from Trinity Racing is designed specifically for the high horsepower and extreme use associated with today’s range of highperformance side-by-sides.

rinity Racing continues to expand and upgrade its already broad line of performance parts and accessories designed to give a boost to the current range of go-fast side-by-sides.
Earlier this year the company introduced the Sand Storm drive belt, which has proven to be a popular product that outlasts and out-performs the OEM belt. Now, Trinity is introducing a new drive belt that’s designed and built to live up to its name, the World’s Best Belt. That’s a pretty lofty product name, so let’s get the details on this new product for the Trinity lineup. The World’s Best Belt features all the same performance-enhancing features as the Sand Storm does, but does so with even more strength and a few upgraded materials. First, the World’s Best Belt uses an extra heavy-duty, high-twist Aramid Fiber cord designed specifically for the high horsepower and extreme use associated with today’s range of beefy and built side-by-sides. So, what does better resistance to heat and faster heat dissipation mean to real-world use? Quite simply, it means that your customers can operate their high-performance vehicles longer, in more extreme conditions without worrying about belt failure. The reason belts fail is because they cannot withstand the continuous heat. With this new design, the belt stays cooler and therefore lasts longer than OE. All Trinity Racing drive belts come with a one-year warranty from date of purchase. So, if there is an issue, your customers will know that they’ll get taken care of. In addition to the ruggedness of the World’s Best Belt, and its strong warranty, it also comes at an affordable price. For Polaris RZR models it retails at $159.95, while for the Can-Am it retails for $189.95. Both fitments come in at a lower price than what is offered from OEM. If your customers come in looking for a stronger belt that’s more reliable and affordable than the OE option, let them know the Sand Storm and World’s Best Belt are economical and performance-minded options. ■

Playing in the Mud
Clean Solutions for Dirty Conditions
S
ometimes getting muddy is what makes a ride fun, and other times it’s just hard work. Either way, Moose Racing has riders and racers covered with a range of parts that help a bike stay cleaner and perform better in even the muddiest of conditions. The new Moose Racing mud radiator cover is a lightweight silicone cover that installs over the front of the louvres and easily stays put with elastic straps. Both the design, as well as the choice of material, helps keep mud from sticking to the radiator, which can restrict the flow of air. Racers have to get out and compete in any kind of weather, which means that many Grand Prix and U.S. motocross factory race teams use the mud radiator cover.
Racers are the ones who especially benefit from Moose Racing mud tire wraps. The wraps are designed to prevent mud from filling in between the knobs before the start of a race – simply put the wraps on in the pits, then push the bike to the starting area so that the tires are still clean when the wraps are pulled off. Those clean tires will help maximize traction at the start of the race and can be a big advantage off the line. The one-size tire wraps fit most full-size dirtbikes, and they are easy to put on and remove thanks to the hook-andloop closure.
Radiator cover
Moose Racing’s mud tire wraps keep knobbies mud free for maximum traction off the line.
Moose Racing also has a radiator cap that creates a higher-pressure system compared to a stock cap. The quick swap is a simple, inexpensive way to avoid overheating an engine. Raising the cooling system’s maximum operating pressure increases the coolant’s boiling point, so a dirty radiator is less of a threat to the bike’s operation. Moose Racing’s radiator cap is a universal fit for most Japanese models, and it has hightemperature, corrosion-resistant silicone seals. Paired with the mud radiator cover, it ensures that a bike can keep its cool even in muddy conditions.

MOOSE RACING
Another Moose Racing product that has helped professional off-road race teams around the world deal with grimy conditions is the mud-proof solid rotor. Just like the name says, the rotor is solid, which means that mud can’t get jammed into any small holes or crevices. As an added benefit, the no-hole design significantly prolongs brake pad life. The CAD/CAM laser-cut rotor is made from a high-carbon content stainless steel, which offers greater friction than standard discs for improved stopping power in wet conditions. Riding in the mud can make things really slippery, and not just for the tires. The rider needs to stay firmly in place, too. Moose Racing’s ribbed seat cover helps ensure that a rider stays put no matter how slippery things get. The rubberized material combined with the ribbing provides superior traction in both wet and dry conditions. UV protection guards against the sun, while double-stitching guards against hard riding. Color options include the major OEM hues.
Ribbed seat cover
Moose Racing’s foam handguards help create a barrier against debris as well as cold and wind, and they can be used in combination with other handguards. The outer shell of the foam handguards is made from heavy-duty 500 denier nylon with ½-inch closed cell foam to keep the elements at bay. Twin grommets on the outside of each guard allow a rider to attach cable ties to provide a more rigid mount. The foam handguards are nearly universal for both off-road bikes and sport quads thanks to a universal cinch-strap mounting style. Moose Racing also has foot peg protectors to keep dirt and mud from packing into the foot peg mounts. No tools are needed for installation, and folding foot pegs aren’t hindered by the protectors, which are made of a lightweight, flexible rubber.
Whether your customers are loading their bikes or getting things back together after a crash, the front and rear lifting straps help get the job done.
When it comes to getting things together after a crash, or even just loading a bike into a truck, it helps to have as many handholds as possible. Moose Racing has both front and rear lift straps made of strong webbing that is thick and easy to grab. The front lift strap mounts to the forks by weaving the webbing through the buckles, and the length is adjustable. The rear lift strap is also adjustable, and elastic tension keeps it snug until it is needed. Strong buckles and bushings make sure the webbing has a strong connection. Multiple sizes of mounting hardware come with each rear lift strap, so it can fit nearly any bike that uses two bolts to attach the seat to the subframe, plus most KTM models with a single under-fender seat bolt.

The New Variant Pro Refined, But Not Tamed

ggressive is a word that the team at Icon has never backed down from, whether it’s used to describe a piece of gear, a typical customer’s riding style or the company’s approach to marketing. The Variant helmet has been in that aggressive category since its debut more than 10 years ago, and while the new Variant Pro is a refined version of the original, don’t think for a minute that it’s any less fierce. The Variant Pro has been a much-anticipated new helmet from Icon, and its improvements over the original Variant include a fine-tuned fit, improved function and lighter weight. That weight savings begins with shaving off every bit of unnecessary material. The Fiberglass/Dyneema/Carbon matrix shell is refined in a wind tunnel to ensure optimal performance at speed plus minimal bulk. The dualdensity EPS core provides critical energy management while allowing the Variant Pro to maintain a slim profile. The Variant Pro is available in a solid Rubatone finish, as well as the uniquely styled Ascension range, the rawlooking Construct, and the bold looking Totem. The Variant Pro’s visor system adds to the aggressive styling, but it also helps block out bright sunlight while producing minimal lift characteristics. Combined with a fog-free Precision Optics shield that improves peripheral vision and produces an outstanding distortion-free line of sight, the Variant Pro offers great visibility. The helmet’s unique tool-less shield change system allows a rider to swap shields in a matter of seconds, and of course there are multiple shield options available. Inside the Variant Pro, the traditional three-piece liner has been upgraded to a five-piece liner, providing a greater amount of fitment combinations for each unique head shape. In all, there are 27 different fitment combinations available. The Hydradry moisturewicking liner helps provide a more comfortable ride.
The Variant Pro is a refined and updated version of Icon’s popular Variant helmet. The new version features a fine-tuned fit, improved function and lighter weight.
The Variant Pro’s extensive venting system works at all speeds – in other words, even when aggressive riding isn’t necessary – to ensure air keeps flowing to the helmet interior. There are six air intakes and four exhaust ports connected by deep channeling in the EPS foam liner for maximum airflow. ■

636 Performance
Bassani is Back in the Sportbike Game
Bassani is jumping back into the sportbike market with a new megaphone slip-on muffler built for the popular Kawasaki ZX-6R 636. The upgrade provides a performance boost and improved exhaust tone.
With the new megaphone muffler slip-on for the 636, Bassani has designed and built its first sportbike exhaust since 1987 so you can bet it’s a special one.
T
hat latest-generation Kawasaki ZX-6R 636 just got a whole lot better. Bassani has launched new megaphone muffler slip-ons for the 636, a bike that’s already a favorite with street riders, trackday regulars and a preferred platform for stunt riders. With the addition of those new pipes, that 636 will now get enhanced performance, improved sound and a serious upgrade in the looks department. The pipes are offered with the choice of either TIG welded stainless steel construction or with a jet-black finish. Maybe best known for its mega-performance pipes for the V-twins, Bassani Xhaust actually got its start in the metric market with performance upgrades like this. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s championship motocross racers flocked to Bassani. In road-racing Bassani’s Superbike Competition Exhausts were another must-have favorite.
Squeezing looks, power and tire-blistering performance out of an inline-four is second nature at Bassani. The new megaphone muffler slip-ons for the ZX-6R continue that winning Bassani tradition thanks to plenty of input from top stunt riders. They came looking for better looking, better performing exhausts for the 636 and Bassani is giving it to them. Designed for an exact, no-hassle fit on all ZX-6Rs (from the 2013 models to the 2019s with the revised-look bodywork) either version of the slip-on is an easy replacement for the big, bulky OE silencer. The megaphone is dramatically upswept for clearance and capped with a slash-cut end cap and features a specially designed perforated baffle. That baffle not only significantly enhances horsepower and torque, but also gives the Kawasaki the exhaust note it deserves. The highly muffled, whisper-quiet tone of the OE system is replaced with a much more fitting race-bike sound. ■

TIRES
From Spinning to Grinning The Right Tires for the Job
The Sidewinder ATV tires from AMS feature offset vshaped blades that help with cornering control, sidehill grip and plenty of traction in the sand.
P
art of the fun of riding an ATV or dirtbike is exploring and experiencing new terrain, and one of the most unique and potentially enjoyable riding scenarios your customers can find themselves in is riding in deep sand. The soft stuff can be a real pain if their bikes or quads aren’t properly equipped, but if they’re rolling on Sand Snake MX tires or Sidewinder ATV tires from AMS, then they’ll go from spinning to grinning as traction, control and fun go through the roof. AMS has long been a source for tires for both two- and four-wheelers, in part because they have tread patterns for so many categories of riding. Getting the most enjoyment out of a particular riding scene means having the right tires for the job, and when it comes to enjoying sand, paddle tires are the way to go. For dirtbikes, the Sand Snake MX rear paddle tire is a super effective way to put power to the ground. A normal knobby front tire works well enough to steer, but a traditional medium or hardpack rear will simply spin and trench. Spooning on a Sand Snake MX rear ensures there’s traction and thrust as soon as your customers twist the throttle. The Sand Snake MX tire bites into sand with six, eight or ten paddles depending on the size of the tire. The natural-rubber tread compound of the Sand Snake MX is designed to run cool during use for increased longevity. The lightweight carcass is durable enough to resist punctures and abrasions from the occasional rock. Sand Snakes are available in 12-inch, 14-inch, 16-inch, 18-inch, and 19-inch sizes for rear applications only.

For ATV riders, the Sidewinder tires are as capable in the sand as the serpent they’re named after. While straight paddles are excellent at providing driving force, they’re not ideal for cornering. That’s why the Sidewinder features eight offset v-shaped blades that stand 1⅛-inches tall and extend from one sidewall to the other. The unique shape of the paddles improves cornering control as well as sidehill grip, ensuring the most fun at the beach, at the dunes or in a sand wash. Sidewinders are available in 9-inch and 10-inch sizes for left and right applications. Make sure your customers are ready to rail in the sand by offering them either the Sand Snake MX rear or Sidewinder ATV rears. Both are available now from Parts Unlimited. ■

Better Braking
Performance Off-Road Rotors
S
ince 1990, Braking has offered technologically advanced, high-end products for performance enthusiasts and racers based on track-proven designs that can lay claim to 120 world title victories.
Off-road high-performance and racing enthusiasts prowling for new products to give them an added advantage need to know about Braking’s latest addition to its line of rotors that are built for getting dirty – the EPTA. These are the rotors of choice for many top riders around the world in MXGP and Supercross. Short for Enhanced Performance Torque Application, the EPTA evolved from the company’s Batfly rotor, which includes a distinct pattern of grooves on the disk’s surface. These grooves are optimized to clear mud and dirt from the pads and rotor and create a natural ventilation effect to help keep things cool. The round design of the disk’s inside and outside diameter lead to better radial expansion in extreme heat conditions. Available in 270 mm and 280 mm sizes, EPTA rotors also share the Batfly’s directionally specific non-round surface profile for superior braking grip and heightened ability to dissipate heat, which enables more stable power in extreme conditions. Just like the Batfly, the EPTA aims for high-strength and low weight, so the rotor is coupled to the 7075-T6 aluminum carrier with light stainless-steel rivets at six points from the outboard side. The non-round outer profile of the disk lowers weight while increasing rigidity, and it looks pretty stylish, too. This setup adds up to a reduction in unsprung weight for a noticeable improvement in handling. What sets the EPTA apart from the Batfly is the hub-torotor coupling system. Instead of the usual pins, the EPTA mounts to the wheel hub with clips and nails that resist deformation for more consistent performance throughout the disk’s life. This coupling system ensures more direct and constant contact between the hub and the rotor. In addition, the coupling geometry allows the rotor stems to slide radially for improved absorption of input from the terrain and to help resist deformations at high temperatures. For riders, this setup means more positive and direct feedback for a powerful and effective braking event from beginning to end. That’s a fancy way of saying the EPTA just feels better. ■

EXHAUST PRODUCTS
That New Pipe Smell
Fitments for 2020 Bikes and More
The R&D team at FMF Racing is constantly on the gas, working tirelessly to develop, test and build new products so that they’re ready for when – and often before – the 2020 model year bikes hit the dealerships.
E
very year around this time, while the current racing seasons are winding down, whether it’s the Enduro, Extreme Enduro, GNCC, Hare Scrambles, or motocross, FMF’s R&D team is operating at full throttle. That team is hotly focused on developing new products, and helping numerous factory teams and top privateers build top-performing machines with finely tuned and advanced exhaust products for the next competitive season. (After, of course, the Motocross of Nations, Red Bull Straight Rhythm and Monster Cup events!) At this same time the entire FMF crew is very intently chasing down new 2020 model year machines for fitment and performance testing, and ensuring that any and all products are quickly out the door once made. As of press time, FMF Racing has already listed 530 individual part numbers with 2020 fitment. This includes 168 KTM items, 147 Husqvarna products, 42 pieces for Honda machines, 57 for Kawasaki’s, 24 fitments for Suzuki, and 93 for Yamaha. Look to the newest Parts Unlimited catalog for additional 2020 fitments across all brands. Phew, that list is big and will continue to grow as FMF obtains machines and gathers information. It already includes some items that only fit new 2020 machines, and a number of those items are available now. Examples here include Husqvarna’s 250i and 300i 2-stroke bikes, the FE 250 and FE 501 4-stroke machines, KTM’s 250 XC-W TPI, 350 XCF-W, 450 XCF-W, 500 XCF-W bikes; and Yamaha’s YZ450-F and YZ125X models. With all of this happening, FMF’s research and development team is still evaluating and innovating with new products.
Open up those Parts Unlimited catalogs and check out the extensive range of 2-stroke exhaust products that FMF offers.
Be sure to learn about FMF’s recently introduced Extreme 2.1 2-stroke silencers, Megabomb headers for 2018 model year and earlier KTM 350 EXC-F and 500 EXC-F bikes, and the just announced 4.1 RCT Slip-on Muffler for the Honda CRF450X machine. A very big advantage for savvy dealers in these times is to recognize the breadth and width of fitments that FMF is now offering, and have some stock of certain FMF Racing exhaust products. This range of stock should definitely include some pieces of the new model year fitment, and don’t overlook exhaust for the 2020 minis across all brands. FMF Racing offers a wide selection of performance exhausts that have multiple applications, fitting the new 2020 model year and a number of previous years. Those items make for a good investment, as it’s easy to stock a product that will fit numerous years, and in some cases a number of different model motorcycles. Multiple-year fitment product can also be found for some FMF four-wheeler items. ■

Engine Service Made Easier
A
ttempting deep engine service without the right tools is a bad move. Without them an easy operation can turn into something entirely different. For years, pros have turned to Motion Pro for the specialized tools engine work requires. While they won’t see daily use, when they’re needed there’s no substitute.
the splitter fits various case sizes. A tool-steel body and billet aluminum arms make it Motion Pro tough.
When it comes to internal engine work, there’s no substitute for having the right tool for the job. That’s why Motion Pro offers up such specialty tools as its Crankcase Splitter V2.
Constantly adding to the lineup, Motion Pro’s latest additions are a new Crankcase Splitter V2, a Dowel-Pin Puller Set and the T-6 Valve Spring Compressor, all deserving a spot in the toolbox. Motion Pro says that the new Crankcase Splitter V2 is the easiest-to-use case splitter the company has ever devised. It safely center-pulls over the crankshaft, its grooved studs are simple to install, the collars in the puller arms allow quick setup and, with 5mm, 6mm and 8 mm stud threads,
A Dowel-Pin Puller is another must. Motion Pro’s will remove everything from slightly stuck to severely frozen pins. It comes with 8mm, 10mm, 12mm and 14 mm collets, with more sizes available separately.
Small engine cylinder head work gets lots easier with a T-6 Valve Spring Compressor. Fully adjustable, a quick-release system presses straight against the spring retainer to eliminate side loading. It also has an aluminum lower adjuster that won’t damage the valves and it is perfectly sized for powersport applications. ■
