epending on where you live, it may or may not be dirt riding season yet. But hang on, even for those of you in the colder climates, the sun will soon be shining and the business for trail, Dual-Sport and motocross bikes will be in full swing. And that’s great news, especially since that segment of the market is where there is growth happening. The MIC sales reports from late-2018 show that while new streetbike sales were running behind the previous year, pure off-road sales were up almost 5 percent, and Dual-Sport was seeing double-digit growth. That’s why we included in this issue a special section called “Dirt!” It starts on page 26 and covers everything from beginners on little mini-bikes to the pros of Supercross. And speaking of Supercross, at press time it’s exciting to see the success of our THOR/Parts Unlimited team riders in both the 250 and 450 classes. Both of the Yamaha factory 250 riders, Colt Nichols and Dylan Ferrandis, are outfitted in THOR gear this year and both have already scored race wins. Adding to the excitement, Nichols is leading the
point standings in the 250 West class. In the premier 450 class, factory KTM riders Marvin Musquin and Cooper Webb are showcasing the 2019 THOR line to the max with Webb leading the points as we went to press following a second straight Main Event victory at the Oakland Supercross. And we know everyone is not a professional motocross or Supercross rider, so you’ll read about some products in the section for your everyday trail riders too. In previous issues we have featured details of the United States Motorcycle Coaching Association and, in this issue, have an update about where the USMCA is now. It’s about how the next phase in its launch plan is aimed at motorcycle retailers. Be sure to check that out and see how your store might get involved with this new organization. It is dedicated to rejuvenating interest in motorcycling in the new generation, and to help them get the most out their riding or racing experiences. ■

T
he year 2018 was a busy time for the United States Motorcycle Coaching Association. The group was founded with the purpose of growing the sport of motorcycling by attracting new and returning riders with a nationwide network of certified motorcycle coaches. Over the course of the year, the association held its Second Annual Summit and several workshops, and then began the first of a series of Regional Certification Workshops. The association also continued the development of dirtbike- and sportbike-specific content, launched an affordable insurance program, and saw a positive increase in the certified coaching network. “In 2018 we accomplished a lot and achieved a solid foundation and acceleration in the number of USMCA certified coaches,” says USMCA founding member Mark Blackwell. “With help from the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation), we’ve created our First Ride program content for all our coaches to use when they have the

opportunity to introduce a completely new rider into our sport. We’ve also created Level 100 videos for both dirtbikes and sportbikes.” As of late January, the USMCA had 92 certified coaches, and was expecting to hit and surpass the 100-coach mark in February. “We have over 360 others enrolled in our system,” Blackwell said, “so a goal of 250 USMCA certified coaches nationwide by the end of the year seems realistic.” Building on that list of accomplishments, the USMCA is now gearing up to be a future resource for powersports dealers. Dealers can check out https://motorcyclecoaching.org, a new website that will help them, and eventually their customers, find an USMCA-certified coach in their area, and check out their qualifications. If a dealer or dealership employee is interested in becoming a USMCA-certified dirtbike or sportbike coach, there is a link to a site with all the necessary information, including details on the steps toward certification. continued on page 12...

“The next step is engaging dealers now that we’re through most of the preparation,” says association co-founder and chairman, Jon Erik Burleson. “It’s like we’re at the beginning of a long race and we’re through with the bike-build, training and practice, and now we’re ready to go to the starting line.”
Expanding the Message Since launching, the USMCA’s focus has attracted the attention of the powersport industry at large, with many companies now backing its efforts to grow the sport of motorcycling. “We have the support of all seven major manufacturers who voted unanimously to support the USMCA initiative through the MIC and MSF Board of Directors” says USMCA executive director Christy LaCurrelle. “In addition, Wells Fargo Commercial Distribution Finance and Dunlop Tire are major corporate partners.” That new website is one aspect of a multi-pronged approach to expanding the association’s message for new and returning riders that motorcycling is a positive, fun and friendly experience, explains Blackwell. The USMCA has also tapped longtime powersports marketing and PR agency, Vreeke & Associates, to handle its communications strategy, which includes a newsletter and expanded media relations. The association’s social media presence will be managed by Alex Mock of 24/7. One of the main focuses of this outreach is to let those new and returning riders know that the USMCA and its network of certified coaches can help them better enjoy the sport of motorcycling, whether it’s through teaching riding basics, helping to sharpen some rusty skills, or continue to build and broaden their riding skills. “We want to help riders develop a life-long passion for our sport” says Burleson.

“The leadership of the USMCA feels we need to lower the barriers of entry into the sport of motorcycling,” says Jeff Emig, an association co-founder and one of its coaching leaders for dirtbikes. “We believe coaching can help make new riders feel more welcome into our sport and provide a safe and predictable pathway to enjoy the sport as their riding progresses.” As such, the USMCA’s Level 100 coach course contains content intended for coaching beginning riders. The objective of the course is for coaches to gain valuable safety skills to use both on and off the track as well as insight into the standards and ethics of quality coaching. As with any sport, access to well-trained coaches is essential. For example, an USMCA-certified coach can help introduce riders to track riding, both dirt and pavement, for sportbikes. This could be invaluable to a sportbike customer who wants to attend a track day, but finds the speed, warnings and other riders intimidating. With an USMCA-trained coach, that customer can get practice in a controlled environment before heading out on to the track. This can lead to a more enjoyable, less stressful experience, and the coach and rider can then decide together when the rider is to head out on the track. All USMCA-certified coaches have agreed to uphold the association’s code of conduct, have passed a national-level continued on page 14...

MICHELIN TIRES

M
ichelin Total Performance is a pledge to both customers and dealers to deliver tires that meet rigid expectations. Grip should not compromise longevity, wet-braking capabilities should never displace comfort and factors like safety, fuel savings and quality should be part of every motorcycle tire the company produces. The result of that pledge is a constantly evolving portfolio of tires across all motorcycling platforms, and Michelin’s goal is to outdo itself with each new addition. With the ever-increasing popularity of Adventure Touring, Michelin has expanded its line of tires for that market, covering the needs of riders who spend most of their time off-road all the way to those who prefer to have their adventures on firm asphalt. The new Michelin Anakee Adventure tire completes the versatile Adventure Touring line that includes the Michelin Anakee Wild, Anakee III and Road 5 Trail.

Michelin Anakee Wild tires are designed for riders who really like to take the road less travelled. The 50/50 tire has split on- and off-road capabilities, effortlessly handling both terrains.
1. Anakee Adventure
The Michelin Anakee Adventure fills a big gap in the Adventure Touring market. The capable 80/20 tire is for riders who spend a lot of time on paved roads but still need the confidence to ride off-road when the need or desire arises. It is designed to appeal to a wide range of Adventure Touring riders because of that competence in both environments – it is more capable than the Anakee III for off-road riding but has more on-road endurance than the Anakee Wild. The Michelin Anakee Adventure’s top features are a blend of precise handling and longevity thanks to an optimized profile, all-new tread pattern and compounds that are designed to provide the best of both worlds, on- and off-road.
Another hallmark of the Michelin Anakee Adventure is the distinctive tread pattern. The fully-grooved geometric tread pattern has no central rib and is intended for optimal traction both on- and off-road. Added to that is Michelin’s Bridge Block Technology, which includes thicker tread blocks that are “bridged” with rubber to increase cornering stability. Bridge Block Technology and 2CT+ Technology combine to offer excellent handling capabilities on-road for better cornering confidence. Michelin says that the look of the Anakee Adventure is also intended to be appealing to the eye; during product development the company solicited feedback from Adventure Touring riders who were very enthusiastic about the direction of the aggressive styling of the new tire.
2. Anakee Wild
Michelin’s new silica tread compound gives the Anakee Adventure tremendous wet grip for added confidence, while the dual compound construction offers a blend of handling and longevity.
Michelin Anakee Wild tires are designed for riders who really like to take the road less travelled. While the tire is technically a 50/50 tire for split on- and off-road capabilities, Michelin prefers to think of it as a 100/100 tire.
The rear tire has Michelin’s 2CT+ Technology, which features harder rubber in the center of the tread as well as underneath the softer-compound shoulders. That design offers better rigidity at lean, which translates to more stability when cornering, especially under strong acceleration.
Most of the available sizes have a radial construction for stable on-road handling at speeds up to 106 mph, and a more-supple shoulder for a more compliant contact patch in off-road terrain, which eliminates the need to air down the tires before hitting the dirt.
The front tire, meanwhile, has Michelin’s 2CT dual-compound technology, with the harder rubber in the middle of the tire and the softer rubber on the shoulders for a blend of wear resistance and grip that best suits the front tire profile.
The Michelin Anakee Wild is the most aggressive tread pattern in the company’s Adventure Touring line, making it a true knobby that can tackle ruts, off-road elevation and other extreme terrain.

MICHELIN TIRES
Customers who typically stick to on-road riding but still want the ability to tackle fire roads and some gravel are likely to prefer the 90/10 combination of the Michelin Anakee III.

Michelin’s Bridge Block Technology debuted on the Anakee Wild, and the innovative tread pattern was inspired by the Michelin Desert Race tire, which has dominated the Dakar Rally with 34 victories since 1982! New compounds give the Michelin Anakee Wild longevity, while the offset blocks and curved tread grooves offer premium off-road performance. The compounds and optimized tread depth also ensure outstanding resistance to high temperatures, adding to the Anakee Wild’s on-road features.
3. Anakee III
Riders who typically stick to on-road riding but still want the ability to tackle fire roads and some gravel are likely to prefer the 90/10 combination of the Michelin Anakee III. The tire combines a robust casing and a profile inspired by the Michelin Sport Touring radial line to provide excellent stability and maneuverability. The specialized tire tread can handle varying road conditions, including wet surfaces, with ease.

The Michelin Anakee III is OE on many BMW models, including the R 1200 GS, R 1200 GS Adventure, F 700 GS and F 800 GS platforms.
4. Road 5 Trail
The tire that completes Michelin’s Adventure Touring line is the Michelin Road 5 Trail. It features all of the traits that make the Road 5 an outstanding tire, but the trail version is specifically designed for Adventure Touring bikes that are exclusively ridden on the road. The Michelin Road 5 Trail tires have excellent longevity. That longevity is due in part to Michelin’s patented ACT+ casing technology, which maintains an optimized contact patch geometry across the unique 3D tread pattern. Michelin Road 5 Trail tires offer superior wet weather grip thanks to the patented Michelin XST Evo siping and both 2CT and 2CT+ tread compounds. The sipes, which are wider at the base, help redirect water into efficiently-designed channels so the tire has more direct contact with the road. This design is intended to maintain the wet grip performance even as the miles stack up and the tires begin to wear. In fact, Michelin reports that after 3500 miles, the tires still stop as short as brand-new Michelin Pilot Road 4 tires.
Multi-Segment Technology
Launching a new tire like the Michelin Anakee Adventure is almost like a competition, with the company constantly striving to best even its own tires. Testing on each new tire that comes to market is extensive. Michelin, which is well-known for its high-quality products on virtually all types of vehicles, has a product portfolio for every type of motorcycle and scooter. This allows the tire maker to apply new technologies and innovations across very diverse platforms. As an example, the Michelin Road 5 tire’s excellent stopping capabilities in the wet even after 3,500 miles is a result of development in Michelin’s car tire division. The Michelin Premier AS tire for cars features grooves in the tread pattern that get wider as the tire wears so that stopping power in the wet remains strong. That technology jumped over to the motorcycle side as Michelin XST Evo siping, which appears on the Michelin Road 5 and on the Road 5 Trail tires. Now, the goal of the technology is to provide confidence in the rain – including for riders who do not ordinally venture out in wet conditions – even though it got its start in the automotive market. Like the Michelin Power RS, the Michelin Road 5 tire has MotoGP in its DNA. As the spec tire for MotoGP, Michelin has developed Adaptive Casing Technology. The advancement offers more nimble handling and excellent feedback so a

rider can feel when a tire it nearing its grip limit. In this case, what works well for a roadracer also works well for a Sport Touring rider who might be pushing the limits on the road. Dual compound technology on a sport premium tire got its start in 2005 on the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT. Michelin pioneered dual-compound tires for sportbike applications, but the advantages of the technology make it just as beneficial on tires like the Michelin Anakee Adventure. The design is so tried-and-true that Michelin still offers the Pilot Power 2CT as a versatile, durable tire, and it continues to have a wide customer base. The ability to pass technology from one tire segment to the next is a key aspect of Michelin’s adaptability, which is highlighted in the company’s relationship with HarleyDavidson. With tires for everything from Adventure Touring bikes to big, powerful V-twins, Michelin’s lineup shows a very diverse range of features.

Monster Energy Supercross 2019 Parts Unlimited’s Riders to Watch
I
t’s 2019, and with the New Year comes a new season of Monster Energy Supercross with new and returning Parts Unlimited riders.
Parts Unlimited has a long history of supporting the sport of racing from the grass roots level to the best riders in the world. This season, Supercross is better than ever and Parts Unlimited riders are up to the challenge. At the season opener at the Angel Stadium in Anaheim, THOR/ Yamaha rider Colt Nichols took his first Supercross career win followed by THOR/Yamaha teammate Dylan Ferrandis for a 1-2 THOR sweep in the 250SX West class. In the 450cc class, Justin Barcia took the win. Wearing Alpinestars gear, Yamaha-mounted Barcia fought his way through the mud and obstacles to take the lead on the 14th lap and hold it to the checkered flag for an underdog victory. At the second round at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, AZ a week later Nichols earned a spot on the podium again with a second-place finish. Not a bad way to jump into the season. When the series returned to the home of Angels baseball two weeks later for Anaheim 2, THOR/KTM ride Cooper Webb entered the weekend winless in 450cc Supercross class. He left as the winner.

In addition to battling for race wins, veteran Marvin Musquin will be a factor this year in the chase for the 450 Supercross championship. Photo by Simon Cudby
RIDERS TO WATCH THIS YEAR 450CC CLASS
• Marvin Musquin (#25) is riding a Red Bull KTM this season wearing THOR racewear and Alpinestars boots. Musquin returns after a runner-up finish in the 2018 Supercross series. The two-time MX2 World Champion is loaded with talent and desire and is sure to be a front runner this season. Despite some bad luck in the first two rounds, “MM25” came back to form in round three and isn’t likely to stop running up front. He sits solidly in the top five in the points chase. • Cooper Webb (#2) made his Red Bull KTM Team debut at Anaheim 1 wearing THOR racewear. Webb had an interesting and spectacular race. He went down in the first turn with a couple of other riders and was 20th after the first lap, but he thrived in the rain-soaked muddy conditions and finished out the race in fifth. A week later at the second round in Arizona, Webb put in a tough performance to land himself in the top 10 overall. He then went on to prove himself at Anaheim 2 by putting the KTM at the top of the podium in the Triple Crown format. Webb currently holds a top three slot in the points chase. • Aaron Plessinger (#7) dominated the 2018 250cc West Supercross Championship and 250cc National Championship. For 2019, Plessinger moves up to the 450cc class aboard the Factory Yamaha team. Sporting his new number on his THOR racewear, Plessinger made his 450SX-class debut at Anaheim 1 and pulled off a sixth-place finish in the muddy conditions. In his second race in the 450cc class, he landed just outside

Webb was nearly perfect in the first Triple Crown format of the season, winning the first two mains and sweeping the podium with a third-place finish in the final to take the overall victory. THOR/KTM’s Marvin Musquin was the only other rider in 450s to sweep the podium. He did not win any of the mains, but with a finish of third in the first and secondplace results in the last two, he grabbed the second spot in the overall results. Unveiled in the 2018 season, the Triple Crown format features three main events per class and is modeled after the format used in the Monster Energy Cup. The 250SX West class at Anaheim 2 featured another dogfight between Nichols and Ferrandis. Leading the title chase by one point entering Anaheim 2, Nichols was determined to hang onto the red plate. He won the first main, then finished third and fourth in his next two outings. Ferrandis was the runner-up to Nichols in main one, but charged back to win main two. He finished third in the final main. As of that race, Nichols held onto the red plate for the third straight week.

the top 10 with an 11th place finish. Plessinger was 7th at Anaheim 2, and is in the top 10 in points. “While we’re still early in the season, we are very proud of how our riders have performed in the opening rounds of the series,” says Eric Storz, THOR marketing specialist. “Between Marvin Musquin, Cooper Webb, and Aaron Plessinger, we have an extremely talented roster in the 450 division.”
250SX WEST CLASS
• Colt Nichols (#39) announced his presence in the 250SX West season opener by taking the win at Anaheim 1 for the Monster Energy/Yamalube/THOR/Parts Unlimited/Yamaha Team. It was the first win of Nichols’ Supercross career and, to prove it was no fluke, he took second at round two in Arizona and another second at round three at Anaheim 2. He holds the 250SX West points lead for the Championship at the time of this writing. • Dylan Ferrandis (#34) launched into the season by giving THOR/Yamaha teammate Nichols a run for his money at Anaheim 1, coming in second. At round two in Glendale, AZ, Ferrandis nosed ahead past Adam Cianciarulo by one hundredth of a second to get the fastest qualifying time. He went on to get sixth place overall. When the Supercross show returned to Anaheim the following weekend, he went 2-13 for an overall finish in third. Ferrandis was a very successful MXGP rider before making his debut in the United States.
The Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha team saw potential in the young racer, and signed him on an extra two-year deal to ride the coveted YZ250F. So far Ferrandis has rewarded them with two podiums and the potential to run up front any time. He sits in the top three in the title chase. “In the 250 division, we are very pleased to be continuing our relationship with the Star Racing Yamaha Team. Colt Nichols and Dylan Ferrandis have already established themselves as two of the front runners for the 250SX West Championship,” says THOR’s Storz. “We are confident that their (THOR/Yamaha) teammates, Mitchell Oldenburg (#66) and Justin Cooper (#32), will do the same in the 250SX East Championship. Overall, we’re off to a great start this year and we’re very excited to be working with such a great group of riders.” The 2019 Supercross season has just begun and there’s a lot more racing to come. We’ll keep you posted on all the riders wearing Parts Unlimited colors as the year progresses. ■

He was a multi-time champion in the Hare and Hound Series and the WORCS series, won stages of the Dakar Rally, and also won multiple Gold Medals at the International Six Days Enduro and captained the USA Trophy Team to several podium finishes.
More than just an open ride day, the Caselli Ride Day included the whole Pala facility. Participants were treated to a VIP Entrance and a free commemorative event T-shirt. Festivities included open riding on groomed tracks from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with the choice of the Main Track, Vet Track, Off-Road Loop, Kids-Only Track, and Kids-Only Practice Session on the Vet Track.
More than just a great rider, Caselli helped his fellow racers, giving parts and even bikes to riders who needed help and giving assistance to injured riders. Sadly, on November 15, 2013, Kurt Caselli crashed and lost his life while leading the Baja 1000, just a few miles from the finish. To honor his memory, the Kurt Caselli Foundation was formed with the mission of protecting and supporting the lives of off-road riders and racers by focusing on their safety, before, during and after their racing careers. In early December 2018, Parts Magazine attended the 6th Annual Kurt Caselli Ride Day in Pala, CA. The event was open to the public and to riders and supporters of all ages. Proceeds from the event benefit the Kurt Caselli Foundation and help fund its growing list of safety initiatives and projects designed to protect and support the lives of off-road

There were also “Learn to Ride Demos” for the kids that included electric balance bikes from STAYCYC. Show-goers also enjoyed food, music and products from an extensive Vendor Row. The event included a silent auction as well as great raffle prizes and give-a-ways, which included a 2019 KTM 300 TPI motorcycle. Later that day, the Caselli Team Challenge gave riders a chance to team up with a pro rider and compete as teammates. Some of the great pro riders who volunteered included 7-time Supercross champion Jeremy McGrath, former Supercross champion Jeff Emig, ISDE Gold Medalist Taylor Robert and Baja winner Timmy Weigand, just to name a few.

A popular event at the Kurt Caselli Ride Day was the Caselli Team Challenge where participants got to pair up with top stars of the sport.
This running of the annual Kurt Caselli Ride Day presented by KTM and FMF Racing brought more than 700 supporters together and raised nearly $85,000.
THOR and Parts Unlimited were supporters of Kurt Caselli throughout his legendary racing career that included many race victories in the desert, as well as an ISDE Gold Medal.
“Legends live forever,” said Donny Emler Jr., Caselli Foundation president. “This event means so much to the entire Kurt Caselli Foundation and to see the faces of so many coming out and enjoying riding and the life of Kurt Caselli is so moving. “To see the support that this foundation has and what we have been able to accomplish in such a short amount of time speaks volumes of our support and our fantastic Foundation Board members. Thank you!” Over the past few years, the Kurt Caselli Foundation has raised more than $1,000,000 and spent $600,000 on safety projects. In 2018, they raised enough funds to grant five scholarships to students of higher education for the spring 2019 semester. Other foundation projects include Rider Safety briefings for promoters, distributing hundreds of KC caution flags to major off-road series across the USA, and the development of KCF off-road safety video and guide books for course markings that help keep off-road racing consistent for riders and promoters. The foundation has also donated KC Safety Kawasaki Mules equipped with medical service devices to the GNCC Series. Additionally, it purchased and loaned an ultra-sound machine to the Alpinestars Mobile Medical Unit. These are just a few of the many accomplishments of the organization. ■

Wheel Components and Bolt Kits
Moose Racing has all of the components needed for your customers to rebuild their wheels, including the company’s premium MX1 hubs and MX1 spoke nipples.

oose Racing knows that a lot of off-road riders take a hands-on approach to the building and maintenance of their motorcycles. To get them ready for the next riding season, Moose Racing has all of the components needed for dirtbike wheel assembly as well as specialized bolt kits to make swapping parts easy. Moose Racing’s MX1 hubs are forged from 6061-T6 aluminum and then machined, making them stronger than stock cast or billet hubs. The one-piece hubs are designed to match perfectly with stock or aftermarket sprockets and rotors, meaning no carriers are necessary. The MX1 hubs also work with MX1 and OEM spokes, as well as Moose Racing and OEM rims.

maximum tensile strength, and the polished finish helps maintain the surface durability. The spokes, which come in lengths of 18 inches, 19 inches and 21 inches, are interchangeable with Moose Racing and stock rims and hubs. The precision threads of the MX1 spokes match perfectly with the MX1 spoke nipples, which are sold in a set of 36 to accommodate an entire wheel. Available in 8-gauge or 9-gauge sizes, the spoke nipples are CNC machined from 7075-T7351 aircraft-quality aluminum before being polished and anodized for a perfect finish. Color options include black, blue, green, gold, lake blue, orange, red, silver and Ti-gray.
Further attention to detail includes larger bearings for improved hub strength and longer life plus a captive wheel spacer for quick changes. Moose Racing offers the MX1 hubs in a lot of off-road motorcycle fitments and plenty of colors, including blue, lake blue, red, black, orange, silver and green.
To cap off a wheel build, Moose Racing also has front and rear rims available to fit most popular models. The rims are designed for use with OEM hubs, spokes and nipples. After the rims are extruded from true 7000-series aluminum, they undergo a three-stage heat treatment to ensure the highest available strength. An anodized finish completes the process, with black, blue, orange and silver colors available.

The Suzuki solution from Moose Racing is the M1 RM/ RMZ bolt kit (p/n 2401-1006) for 2000 and newer RM/RMZ 125-450 models. The crossover possibilities include other Suzuki dirt bikes, older models and DRs. The kit comes with over 178 pieces of hardware, including shroud bolts, seat bolts, sub-frame bolts, fork guard bolts, rotor bolts, sprocket bolts, T-nuts, aluminum bushings, rim lock spac-

The versatile M1 YZ/YZF/WR bolt kit (p/n 2401-1003) was developed by Moose Racing for 2003-2018 Yamaha YZ/ YZF/WR 125-450 models, but it also crosses over to older Yamaha dirt bike models. The kit is one of the most extensive in Moose Racing’s M1 bolt kit line, with 200 pieces that encompass several hardware pieces, sprocket bolts, rotor bolts, valve stem parts, Fuji lock nuts, replacement bolts, various washers and more. Another extremely versatile kit is the M1 Euro bolt kit (p/n 2401-1007). Moose Racing developed the kit for 125-500 KTM models, but it turns out that the kit is also ideal for many Husqvarna, Husaberg, Beta and GasGas models. The Total Package Off-Road Clutch Upgrades
Barnett’s Dirt Digger clutch kits, pressure plates and clutch baskets are a great upgrade over stock for your offroad riding customers, whether they’re on two wheels or four.
O
f all the riders coming to the parts counter it’s the ones with dirtbikes, ATVs and UTVs who are most likely asking about clutches. Little wonder. Off-roading and racing put a clutch through the wringer, especially on those big, heavy and powerful four wheelers. If ever an upgrade makes sense this is it and Barnett’s Dirt Digger clutch kits, steel-faced billet aluminum pressure plates and super-duty billet clutch baskets are a serious answer here. Parts Unlimited has it all with applications right up to current-year models. While simply replacing worn clutch plates with new, stronger parts is a great first step, and Barnett’s Dirt Digger clutch kits do that and more by including heavy-duty springs, a full upgrade doesn’t end there. Adding a long-lasting Barnett billet pressure plate and clutch basket into the mix ensures not only a strong, reliable clutch, but a clutch that’s easily controlled and modulated with an easy lever feel. It features a pressure plate with a tempered-steel face and a basket that comes with replaceable stainless-steel inserts. The Dirt Digger clutch kits are a big step up from OE. The carbon fiber and Kevlar materials Barnett uses provide a stronger, more positive engagement. Barnett’s segmented-

design for that friction material increases oil flow for smooth, consistent performance and increased life. The tempered-steel drive plates are just as good and the kit’s heavy-duty springs, 10 percent to 15 percent stiffer than OEM, are shot-peened and heat-treated for durability. Every kit is checked for an exact stack height ensuring an easy fit and optimum performance. The pressure plates are machined from billet aluminum and feature that tempered-steel friction surface, and are guaranteed to never wear out. They also dissipate heat better and lower clutch temperatures, two more big moves toward a performance clutch that lasts. The billet clutch baskets are also precision machined from billet aluminum and feature patented and replaceable stainless-steel inserts to prevent grooving where the plate tabs make contact. The basket’s oil-passage windows are custom-machined for increased oil flow, further lowering operating temperatures. Simply add a smooth-action Barnett cable into this package and every clutch concern an off-road rider might have is addressed. ■

Broken headlight connectors on Polaris Ranger models are no problem thanks to the headlight pigtail harness. hen it comes to electronics, Moose Utility Division has ATVs and UTVs covered with everything needed to turn on, connect, and measure electronic components. The brand has a wide variety of electrical solutions and replacement parts, including an extensive array of pigtail harnesses. Moose Utility Division pigtail harnesses are designed as OEM replacements, but they come in at just one quarter of the OEM pricing. Each pigtail harness comes as a complete kit, with the correct size of sheathing for the wires, all necessary butt connectors and even zip ties. Moose Utility Division offers up a battery isolator that makes it easier for your customers to install a second battery to run additional aftermarket components like winches, lights or stereos.
Moose Utility Division also makes a Keihin TPS sensor pigtail harness, which is compatible for all Keihin throttle bodies. Likewise, a Mikuni throttle sensor pigtail harness accommodates that brand’s products.

The OEM wiring harness to the T-map sensor on Polaris EFI machines can be a bit sensitive, so Moose Utility Division has a T-map sensor pigtail harness that replaces the stock one. Simply cut off the old harness and use the included butt connectors or solder the connections to the new pigtail. Other options in the Moose Utility Division lineup include a fuel injector pigtail harness with 6-inch long wire leads and an idle air control valve pigtail harness. Utility vehicles often do a lot more than haul things from one place to another, which means a second battery can be handy for additional components. Moose Utility Division has a battery isolator that enables secondary battery power to be directed to whatever add-ons a vehicle has, such as a winch, lights or a stereo. The battery isolator is a 12 Volt, 140 Amp setup that includes all necessary wiring and connectors. The kit is virtually universal, making it an easy addition for all those extra powered components. ■

Powersports Plastics It All Started with Mudguards

L
ike many who make their living in the powersports industry, Franco Acerbis got his start as an enthusiast.
Franco comes from Val Seriana, a valley in the Bergamo region of northern Italy known as the birthplace of numerous Italian motorcycle legends, including Farioli, Gritti, Sala, Signorelli and others. While his family ran a furniture business, his love of two-wheels would also soon elevate him to icon status in the world of off-road motorcycling. Seeing that Franco appeared to prefer motorcycles to mathematics, his father eventually sent him to trade school in Milan where, in addition to spending his free time riding motorcycles, he began studying to become a materials modeller in the bourgeoning plastics industry. Flash forward to 1973 and Franco launches his company, Acerbis Italia, with the production of resin mudguards that were longer and larger than stock units and betterprotected riders from roost. He often recalls how he initially manufactured three pieces, “One for me, one for an Italian enduro champion, and one to sell,” says Franco. That same year, Franco attended the International Six Days Trial (ISDT) held in Dalton, MA, as a mechanic for the Italian team. While in the paddock, he met Preston Petty – the first person in the U.S. to produce thermoplastic resin fenders. It was a meeting that resulted in Acerbis Italia in 1974 becoming the official distributor of Petty Fenders for Italy and Southern Europe.

By 1979 Preston Petty had closed shop and Acerbis found himself with a huge commercial potential but no product to sell. Remembering the words of the Milanese professor of plastics, who told him “Plastic is immortal and can be anything,” Acerbis took his accumulated experiences to go into business for himself, producing his own front fenders and – eventually – developing an innovative new plastic gas tank. The business took off and in 1985 Franco established Acerbis USA to better serve what had become the largest off-road market in the world. Thus he started a whirlwind of expansion for Acerbis, his business, and his love of motorcycles as he went on to organize the legendary Incas Rally in Peru and the Nevada Rally in the U.S. He also began offering products for different market segments and to expand the use of plastic and its processing methods to other industries. Today Acerbis is divided into three business units – Motorsport, Sportswear and OEM – with 260 employees and three subsidiaries. It’s an organization in which Franco remains president. “To chase your dreams is always a merit; to make them feasible and real is fantastic,” he says. “One percent is talent, but the other 99 percent is commitment and hardship. You must transform hardship in dynamism and opportunity.” ■

BOOTS
Built for Performance The Tech 10 Gets an Upgrade
Alpinestars Tech 10
A
lpinestars motocross boots are big players in motocross and off-road riding in terms of performance and protection, and have been for well over 50 years. Now, the new Tech 10 has been completely overhauled to ensure it maintains its regular position on top of the podium.
An integral part of the Tech 10’s unique and lightweight single-piece co-injected foot chassis is the patented Dynamic Heel Compression protector. It’s an innovative safety feature that includes a fully integrated collapsible heel area with expanded poly-foam to absorb high impact energies during a crash.
The completely re-designed CE-certified Tech 10 has a series of new features to further improve its ability, giving riders great comfort and safety.
Tested and proven by Alpinestars athletes in the demanding environments of professional Supercross and motocross, the protection system significantly reduces the effect of excessive, potentially injury-causing, energy from being transferred to the ankle and lower leg.
The most significant upgrades to the Tech 10’s performance are the Front Flexion Control frame, the Asymmetrical Dual-Pivot Arms, the patented Dynamic Heel Compression Protection Shock Absorber which is integrated into an all-new foot shell, and a slimmer, more streamlined outsole.
The re-designed sole typifies the Tech 10’s no-compromise approach. The all-new, central sole section incorporates sculpturing to improve foot-peg performance and grip while also accelerating mud and water run-off.
The Frontal Flex Frame gives the Tech 10 a complete and seamless flexion control system, from the foot shell all the way up to the shin plate, offering high-performance double motion control to prevent over-compression and hyper-extension.
Fully replaceable, it offers enhanced levels of durability and feel while riding, and improved performance on the shifter. The rest of the sole has also been completely overhauled to give riders improved grip, durability and vibration absorption.
Incorporated into the frontal outer chassis of the boot and working in conjunction with Alpinestars unique, patented, dual torsion bar inner ankle brace, the Frontal Flex Frame is engineered to float freely between the upper and lower boot.
Other rider friendly touches include a slimmer and more streamlined profile with a contoured calf protector ergonomically wrapping around the leg, and a dual compound removable anatomic foot-bed for comfort support and even weight distribution.
This allows it to act as a shock absorber by distributing energy across the boot frame while controlling forward and rearward flex, progressively releasing force which dampens and absorbs impact energies.
There is also an ultra-thin and flexible forefoot area for increased sensitivity and control, and a new easier to operate mechanism on the triple buckle closure system. ■

GASKET KITS
High-Quality Gaskets For the Track and Trail
I
taly’s Athena SpA is a major supplier of replacement gaskets in the powersports industry, offering specialized products for on- and off-road motorcycles, ATVs/side-by-sides and scooters.
The company based in the city of Vicenza was founded in 1973 by entrepreneur Giovanni Mancassola as a small artisan’s workshop before 46 years of strategic acquisitions culminated in seven business segments operating from 11 production facilities around the world. The most recent of these was established in Tennessee in 2018. Parts Unlimited carries a wide range of Athena USA’s product line. In the world of gaskets for off-road motorcycles, Athena’s in-house pool of engineers and technicians develops new product ranges using experience gleaned from partnerships with OEM race teams, collaborating with motorcycle manufacturers to maintain the strict parameters and production quality they require. “Athena is first and foremost an OEM gasket manufacturer, with the aftermarket being a complement to the production more than the driving market,” says Edoardo Maligno, sales manager, Athena USA, Inc. “The extensive know-how of the company and huge investment in modern and efficient manufacturing comes from that OEM experience.” Athena’s line-up of gaskets for 2-stroke and 4-stroke off-road vehicles includes cylinder head gaskets, cylinder base gaskets, exhaust gaskets, intake gaskets, flywheel gaskets, clutch gaskets, valve cover gaskets, valve guide oil seals, rubber O-rings, and copper and aluminum washers. Athena also offers full kits for the off-road sector, including Top-end Kits, Race Gasket Kits, Water Pump Seals Kit, and a Complete Engine Gasket Kit that includes all the gaskets needed to completely overhaul an engine (including the valve cover gasket for 4-strokes).
Athena USA’s lineup of gaskets and gasket kits covers a big range of street and off-road applications. They’re designed to exceed OEM specifications and provide optimum performance.
The Top-end Gasket Kit contains gaskets needed to overhaul the cylinder head and combustion section of the engine. It includes valve guide oil seals, but the valve cover kit for 4-stroke engines needs to be purchased separately. Created with high-quality materials based on advice from major motocross teams, the Race Kit includes the cylinder head gasket and two base gaskets, one of which is 0.1 mm thinner. The latter helps increase compression and reduce squish, for better engine performance. Designed to exceed OEM specifications and created to resist high pressure and temperature, the easy-to-install Athena Water Pump Gasket Kit includes water pump seals, right side casing seal, water pump shaft oil seals, and relative washers and bearings. ■

HELMETS
Formed for the Streets
A Technical Helmet for Everyday Riding Icon’s new Airform helmet is packed with features borrowed from the company’s Airframe Pro and Airflite helmets. The result is a helmet with plenty of perks, coming in at a great value.
The new Airform cuts a clean profile, and includes such features as an internal drop shield, a sculpted neck roll for better range of motion, and speaker cutouts in the EPS liner.
T
rickle-down technology happens all the time. Components developed for MotoGP racers are now standard on production motorcycles. GPS was originally used for military purposes, but now we all have navigation on our mobile devices. That same trickle-down effect helped bring about the Airform helmet, the newest addition to Icon’s helmet collection. The Airform is based on the technology of Icon’s Airframe Pro and Airflite helmets to deliver high-quality features for the everyday rider. The result is a solid street helmet that offers plenty of perks without breaking the bank. The Airform is a World Standard helmet, meeting ECE, DOT and PSC compliance for certification. In addition to having a lot of acronyms, the Airform also has an ergonomic design, an engineered venting system, technology compatibility and multiple shield options. The sculpted neck roll on the Airform reduces jacket interference for easier head movement and a more comfortable ride. Further up the shell, a fog-free Icon Optics shield keeps the view of the road clear, while the Prolock shield locking system ensures that the shield stays firmly in place. The Optics shield is available from Icon in a wide range of colors, tints and mirrored finishes.

An internal drop shield has an external slider that can be easily operated even with gloves on. The drop shield can be swapped out for a total of eight color options. By combining a clear Icon Optics shield with a tinted drop shield, riders can transition from day to night riding with just one finger. Inside the Airform, a continuous venting system featuring four intake vents and one exhaust vent is paired with deep airflow channeling in the EPS liner. Those characteristics combine to ensure that cooler heads prevail, no matter how hot the ride gets. Speaker cutouts in the EPS liner will accept Bluetooth communication device speakers so your customers can stay connected to their smartphones or GPS systems. The three-piece HydraDry moisture-wicking interior further helps with temperature control inside the helmet. The interior is also removable for easy cleaning if things get a little stinky. ■

More Power for the Wildcat XX
T
extron hit it out of the park with the new Wildcat XX side-by-side and Trinity Racing was quick to get some quality-tested performance parts to market for those customers who want to make their machine even better. Trinity Racing is known for designing and building high-quality performance UTV parts and accessories - and the new Wildcat XX is a great platform to modify and improve. Now available for your Wildcat XX is a full exhaust, slip-on muffler, and the much-improvedover-stock Sand Storm drive belts. Like all Trinity exhausts, this new Wildcat system is made of 304 Stainless Steel, mandrel bent, and Tig welded. The three stainless steel header pipes are nearly equal length, and mate into one collector. This 3-into-1 design increases exhaust scavenging, creating a smooth powerband with increased horsepower.
These new full system and slip-on exhausts from Trinity Racing offer a nice boost in performance and style for your customers with Textron’s new Wildcat XX side-by-side.
The lightweight aluminum muffler bodies provide the bark your customers expect from a Trinity exhaust and are packed with stainless steel and proprietary pillow pack sound-deadening materials for prolonged intervals between repacking and increased power. The stainless perforated cores create just the right amount of exhaust turbulence, while also allowing the exhaust to flow freely. This full system is available in stainless with brushed aluminum muffler, stainless with black Cerakote® muffler, and all black Cerakote. When paired with a Trinity Racing fuel tuner, your customers can expect to see 10 percent to 12 percent horsepower increases. If your customers aren’t looking for a full system, Trinity Racing also offers two different slip-on muffler options for the Wildcat. The brushed aluminum muffler body, and the Cerakote black muffler body are both available as a direct bolt on. All muffler internals are the same as on the full-system version.

When your customers are increasing the performance of their UTVs, it is also important to think about beefing up the drivetrain. Nothing on those machines will take as much of a beating as the drive belts. Trinity Racing just released the Sand Storm belt, which is designed to withstand and perform under the most brutal of conditions. The Sand Storm belt uses high-temperature, heat-resistant polymer DUMAX® which is superior to OEM construction materials. It also has a higher tensile strength cord construction, which is how Trinity Racing can offer a 1-year warranty on this belt. Sand Storm belts are available now for most popular side by side makes and models. ■

Next Generation Sport-Touring
P
irelli’s Angel GT II is the company’s next generation sport-touring tire aimed straight at naked bike, sport-touring, sportbike and touring riders. Pirelli has further developed its Gran Turismo concept for riders looking for multi-season and all-weather traction and stability coupled with long-life durability. The new Angel GT II promises even more than its predecessors with a newly designed carcass structure, new high-Silica high-mileage compounds, and refined tread patterns both front and rear. This is all with an eye toward integrating these features with the modern electronic rider aids on today’s motorcycles. The Angel GT II’s evolutionary refinements begin with a new carcass structure derived from super-sport technologies. With a Rayon cord end-count now strategically varied over the tire section, there’s a consistently sized footprint whatever the lean angle.
PIRELLI ANGEL GT II
The new tire also features a new multi-radius profile that combines with that new carcass design to result in an even stress distribution across the face of the tire, which significantly extends mileage. It’s a versatile combination that’s able to deliver rider confidence for both touring and aggressive sport action with even wear throughout the tire’s service life. New tread designs and reformulated compounds, which include a dual-compound layout on Angel GT II’s rear tire, continue the refinements. The high-Silica compound is a formulation that borrows heavily from Pirelli’s extensive racing experience. The tire’s innovative tread patterns take its cue from the Diablo racing tires for optimum performance in wet conditions. Twin longitudinal grooves down the tire’s center tread area promote stability with water evacuation and improved grip on low-friction surfaces. Angled grooves maximize directional control during line-taking with an enhanced grip and improved water evacuation while leaned over. Overall feel and control are significantly improved with greatly enhanced wet-weather performance. According to Pirelli, all of these features factor into the Angel GT II’s promise to deliver a significant improvement in handling, stability and feel in all conditions, wet and dry, and deliver it with extendedmileage durability. The Angel GT II comes with plenty of size and application options, too. Tires are available for bikes ranging from the BMW R1200RT to the Yamaha YZF-R1, and everything in between. ■

UTV Stopping Power Four-Wheeler Brake Products

TVs are bigger and heavier than most powersports machines and they require heavyduty stopping power. So, when you’re talking to your customers about upgrading their UTV brakes, remember that EBC Brakes offers high-quality products and cover a full range of machines. Let’s start with the EBC UTVX brake rotors for ATVs and side-by-sides. When a customer comes in with worn or bent rotors, or simply wants an upgrade, point them toward this rotor. This new range of brake rotors features lightweight “vee” profiled contours. They not only look great, but they also perform well and are designed to be self-cleaning. The rotors are made from durable and tough stainless steel in EBC’s British manufacturing facility. They use premium German mill rolled steel that is heat treated and then diamond ground to deliver great braking performance. When it comes to brake pads, EBC offers something for everyone and every climate and condition. Great allaround UTV pads are the EBC ATV and dirt sintered pads. The R series offers high durability as they are made from a sintered copper material in EBC’s USA facility. The R series pads offer high durability and high resistance to contamination by mud, water, sand and grit. They are designed to reduce disc damage and have a long pad life. EBC Brakes Carbon X brake pads are another choice for your UTV customers. They are created from a specialized material called “Impregnated Hybrid Carbon” to give medium-long lifetime and a cool disc braking temperature. This is a good pad choice for hotter conditions. Although the Carbon X pads will not outlast sintered copper brake pads, they do have the unique benefit of lower heat generation and heat transfer. When riding off-road in fast dry conditions such a feature is a major benefit. Often, in these conditions the rear brake rotors can get to be glowing red, which shows just how hot a rotor can get from braking. Finally, EBC offers the SV (Severe Duty) series pads for customer looking for durability. They’re made with highdensity sintered copper alloy for the longest possible life in utility applications on UTVs and ATVs, especially in wet, muddy, dusty and dirty conditions. ■

hile advancements in Bluetooth technology have attracted many of the headlines in the realm of motorcycle helmet headsets, there are still many riders who enjoy the simplicity and dependability of corded headsets. J&M Corporation’s Elite 801 series corded headsets are the result of 40 years of evolution from the very first handmade headset the company produced. J&M Corporation was established in 1978 by John Lazzeroni and Melinda Carevich to meet the recreational audio needs of motorcycle riders and now holds many U.S. patents for headsets, microphones and integrated audio gear. “All Elite 801 series headsets are made here in the U.S. at our factory in Tucson, Arizona from both domestic and foreign raw materials,” Lazzeroni says. “Our dedicated employees, some of whom have been with J&M for more than 36 years, ensure high standards of quality control during the assembly and final testing stages of production.” Available for open, flip-up, full-face and shorty helmets, J&M’s new Elite 801 series headset features high-intensity helmet speakers that are available in two size options. Important to remember, however, is that all Elite 801 headsets are delivered with only the upper section cord included, allowing each individual customer to choose the correct lower-section hook-up cord applicable to their particular motorcycle audio system. For instance, the HC-ZB lower section 8-pin cord offers connectivity to 1980-2017 Honda audio systems, while the new HC-ZYH cord is made for the 2018-2019 Yamaha Venture touring bike. ■

A Wheel for Every Ride
O
ff-roading is an all-inclusive endeavor, open to everyone from the backwoods rider on an $800 ATV to the Moab master traversing slick-rock in a built-up $40,000 side-by-side.
Given that range of enthusiast clientele, it only makes sense to offer a similarly wide range of options when it comes to easily replaceable or modifiable parts like wheels. AMS fully understands this, judging from its line of steel OEM replacement wheels, lighter weight spun aluminum wheels, and highly stylized alloy wheels. AMS’ affordably priced steel replacement wheels fit many applications, with large bell versions available for models with large diameter brake drums or rotors. These wheels feature a durable silver finish and 10mm bolt hole diameter. The lightweight standard lip and rolled lip spun aluminum wheels are constructed of .190-gauge T6061 aluminum heat-treated and offered in a High Luster polish or Satin Black powder coat finish. Less weight equates to less rotating mass, making these ideal not only for recreational use but also for fun in the sand and competition. As for alloy options, the Roll’n Series of wheels made exclusively for Parts Unlimited is AMS’ bespoke offering for ATVs and side-by-sides. The Roll’n 104 wheels feature a precision-machined split six-spoke design, decorative rivets and a matching center cap. The 12-inch wheels are offered in Machined Gloss Black or Painted Matte Black. The 14-inch and 15-inch wheels are offered in Machined Gloss Black only.
STANDARD LIP SIZES INCLUDE: • 8x8.5 (4/110 and 4/115) • 9x8 (4/110 and 4/115) • 9x9 (4/110 and 4/115) • 10x5 (4/144 and 4/156) • 10x8 (4/110 and 4/115) ROLLED LIP SIZES INCLUDE: • 8x8.5 (4/110 and 4/115) • 9x8 (4/110 and 4/115) • 10x5 (4/144 and 4/156) ROLL’N 104 SIZES INCLUDE: 12x7 (4/110 and 4/156) 14x7 (4/110, 4/115, 4/137 and 4/156) 15x7 (4/110, 4/137 and 4/156)
The Roll’n 105 is AMS’ newest wheel. Offered in a Satin Black finish with a classic 8-spoke design, inset chrome accent rivets and black accent bolts on a simulated beadlock lip, this wheel is manufactured with a true 5+2 offset to optimize handling on most modern side-by-sides.
ROLL’N 105 SIZES INCLUDE: • 14x7 (4/110, 4/137 and 4/156) • 15x7 (4/110, 4/137 and 4/156)
Finally, the precision-machined Roll’n 108 wheel – originally designed for AMS’ Sand King tires – features a weight-saving open face with four split spokes and four single spokes conjoining at the center. They’re available in Painted Gloss Black. ■

Power Plugs
Vibration-Proof Connections OptiMate’s BIKE socket and plug lineup works with the OE power sockets on a range of motorcycles, and makes for a strong, vibration-proof connection, even when riding off-road.
T
he standard power socket on BMW bikes, the Ducati Multistrada, and Triumph motorcycles is known in the motorcycle industry by such names as DIN, Hella and Europlug, but it all refers to the same connection. OptiMate’s BIKE socket and plug range features industrystandard sizing and is designed to work with those motorcycle OE connections. Now, the company has added two new BIKE socket ranges, the O-08s (p/n 38070465) and the O-18s (p/n 3807-0466). The O-08s is ideal for adventure riding, its weatherproof design includes a hole to drain out water that might enter during use or if the cap was left open. The O-18s is the
direct replacement for the spring-loaded flip cap version found on those BMW, Ducati and Triumph models. The advantage of this compact design is that the BIKE socket locks onto the inserted plug – inside the socket are spring loaded blades that grip onto the positive pin of the plug. The ground connection is also spring loaded, pushing against the inner metal connection of the socket. That makes for a vibration-proof connection even when off-road riding. Adding a custom vibration-proof BIKE socket to any vehicle is easy. There is also the OptiMate O-08 (p/n 38070169) and the O-18 (p/n 3807-0170) kits with 12-inch cable ending in a SAE connector, that connects to the included O-01 battery lead. The BIKE plug range also includes the O-09 (p/n 38070171) 4-foot SAE extender, the O-19 (p/n 3807-0323) and the O-29 (p/n 3807-0327) angled SAE converters. There is also the O-39 (p/n 3807-0331) DC2.5mm converter for heated apparel. ■

Sprockets for Small Bikes
S
unstar takes pride in providing sprockets and brake discs that offer a great combination of light weight, strength, quality and durability, but another standout point for the company is variety.
Sunstar now has a range of sprocket applications for low-displacement motorcycles like Cobra 50cc models, the Honda Grom and Honda Monkey.
The company has applications for a wide range of motorcycles and ATVs, and the list just keeps getting longer. The newest options are rear sprockets for 2007-2019 Cobra 50cc models, 2014-2019 Honda MSX 125/125A Groms, and the 2019 Honda Z125M/Z125MA Monkey.
The new sprockets for the Cobra models come in a black anodized finish, and there are five sizes to choose from. The hard-anodized coating adds durability as well as better, longer-lasting aesthetics. Weight reduction holes decrease reciprocating mass for superior performance, and the tooth design aims to deliver maximum power transfer. Sunstar Ad 8.375x5.25_PartsMag.pdf

The 33-tooth and 35-tooth sprockets for the Honda models are made of steel. Sunstar designs its steel sprockets for premium strength and durability, ensuring that the sprocket lasts a long time. An exclusive heat treatment helps bolster the strength as well as wear resistance. The final step in the production process is zinc plating for corrosion resistance, which is applied via a baked-on paint process. â–

n the 2018 GNCC ATV/UTV classes, a range that includes College, Girls, Pro, Pro-Am, Seniors, Super-Mini, and Women’s, the riders finishing on top get there with the help of DP Brakes.
Not only that, the top 17 riders in the Pro classes alone had DP brake pads in the calipers. “We’d like to congratulate all those riders,” says Larry Mills, president of DP Brakes and Clutches North America. “We’re honored to be part of their success.” In the ATV/UTV world DP performance is well known. Today’s ATVs and UTVs have all gotten bigger, heavier and faster, which puts a big demand on the brakes and DP has responded with some needed upgrades.
For your ATV/UTV riding customers, DP’s customformulated brake pads perform in all conditions. The stopping power is always strong, sure and progressive, and those pads can last up to three times longer than OE.
Whether it’s a racer or a recreational rider putting the squeeze on the rotors, DP’s custom-formulated brake pads perform in all conditions. The stopping power is always strong, sure and progressive. Those same DP pads are non-abusive to the rotors, they’re quiet, they’re clean and they can last up to three times longer than OE.
DP’s direct-replacement upgraded brake pads are available for all the popular ATVs and UTVs from Arctic Cat, Can Am/BRP, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, and a number of other brands. ■

An Exclusive Smart Lithium Battery
I
ntelligence and exclusivity are not terms normally used when referencing batteries, but those are two of the big features in the Battery Tender® line of smart lithium powersports batteries. The batteries are available to the powersports industry exclusively through Parts Unlimited. Lithium batteries, like the 12V option from Battery Tender, have a host of benefits over traditional batteries. According to the company, they are 99 percent more efficient to charge, last up to four times longer, are two times lighter in weight, increase fuel economy and cover a range of applications. The Battery Tender lithium battery gets its high IQ from the built-in Smart Battery Management System, which monitors, optimizes and protects the battery. Smart BMS is an advanced technology that prevents thermal runaway and dead batteries due to low-voltage damage. The system monitors the state of charge, optimizes battery performance and protects from over-charge, too. When the Smart BMS detects possible over-charge or discharge, it will shut off the battery to prevent permanent

Parts Unlimited also stocks the Battery Tender Lithium Charger. Battery Tender’s smart lithium batteries are available in five 12V options, with amperage ranging from nine to 24. The smallest battery is a lightweight 1¼ pounds, but even the largest is just over 3 pounds. ■

PISTON KITS
Top-End Technology Four-Stroke Piston Kits
R
iders faced with top-end service on any modern four-stroke engine are in for an unpleasant surprise. First, that service will most likely be needed much sooner than anticipated. Second, factory replacement parts are going to induce a severe case of sticker shock. The reason behind both surprises are the valves – nearly all recent motocross bikes and quads have Titanium valves, and while Titanium is lightweight, thus reducing reciprocating valvetrain mass, it’s also soft, expensive and has a short service life compared to premium stainless steel and nickel-based valve alloys.
KMPI”s complete top-end service kit features everything necessary for a high-performance upgrade for most popular motocross bikes and four-wheeler applications.
Kibblewhite Precision Machining, Inc. (KPMI®), well-known for designing and manufacturing longevity into valvetrains for over 80 years, has an affordable and long-lasting solution to OE replacements.
It’s a complete top-end service kit for the most popular motocross bike and four-wheeler applications. The kits not only beat OEM pricing, but can outlast those OE counterparts by twice the factory recommended service life, claims KPMI. KPMI’s kits include all-new valves radically re-engineered and made from a durable EV8 stainless steel. Simply replacing the valves, however, would result in a compression loss. To combat this, KPMI created a revolutionary piston design that incorporates convex geometry into the dome, maintaining the compression ratio at OEM specs. It’s included in the kit along with the rings, wrist pin, clips, valve springs, seals, retainers and all necessary gaskets.
The senior Kibblewhite first became a valvetrain expert out of necessity. He started speedway racing in his hometown of Auckland, New Zealand, and worked on his own motorcycle. A summary of his life and career shows him for the adventurer he was. During his 82 years, he travelled the world, raced in a high-stakes speedway series in Japan and served in the New Zealand Army during World War II. He eventually settled in California in 1949, where KPMI is still headquartered today. ■

Many top racers rely on KPMI valvetrains to get them to the finish line first. At the same time, the company is able to develop its products at the world’s toughest proving grounds. KPMI supports professional racers in top fuel championships throughout North America and Europe as well as in flat track, land speed, ATV and even X Games competition. KPMI was founded by James L. Kibblewhite in 1939, who established a family tradition of providing quality valvetrain components to the motorsport aftermarket industry as well as select OEMs. Since 1989, KPMI has been under the control of his son, William F. Kibblewhite.
KPMI was founded by James L. Kibblewhite as a matter of necessity. As a racer in New Zealand, he worked on his own bike and had to produce his own parts.
